General Chao is a sleek modern Chinese restaurant located in the heart of Chatswood CBD, with an impressive fusion menu that spans across a few Asian countries. They also offer innovative cocktails and an extensive range of spirits, making it easy to toast to any celebrations.

The prawn toast and the ravioli laksa are must try dishes.

Does My Bomb Look Big In This

Last week I slid in for a quiet midweek dinner at General Chao in the Chatswood Interchange. It opened last year amidst considerable fanfare, attracting much cooing from the usual canapes-for-comment, rent-a-crowd, most impressed by the eye-catching décor featuring Shanghai girls in cool blues and greens. Sitting somewhere in-between the hawker-inspired outlets that make up the bulk of District Dining, and a standalone restaurant, it achieves its sense of separation by tucking the dining space and private dining areas around the corner from the main thoroughfare. Peering through shibari-style window bondage, diners can...

The food is awesome - fusion Asian with funky and delicious flavors. Service is good too. Do try the lemongrass pork gyoza and tea dumplings - they were delicious.

Fusion food that makes dessert stand-out. Overall a bit unsure of its direction.

The banana fritter deep fried with egg noodle and served with coffee caramel and ginger ice cream was the best dish, and indeed best Asian fusion dessert I have ever tried. Any south East Asian will akin it to “goreng pisang” or fried banana with a nice twist. The Thai green curry was neither sweet nor savory, hot nor cold and left us wondering whether it was better served as a main or dessert.

The meat skewer dishes were done quite well, I enjoyed the chicken and the beef. The chicken, butterflied and grilled such that it was as bouncy as thigh. The marbling from the beef resulted in a unique tenderness I don’t think I’ve ever experienced. I especially liked that the fat content wasn’t as prominent as some Asian beefs like a Kobe but was instead finely infused.

The special fried rice had too much going on and was more ingredient than rice.

The “Yee sang” a take on the Lunar new year dish that we toss was not authentic, using things like broad beans and corn instead of the usual pickled vegetables. I did not like how the waitress explained the dish as “only the head of the table tossing it to bring good luck” - this is a communal activity done by all

What a treat it was to be part of this glamorous event! The official opening party of General Chao, in Chatswood’s busy Asian-influenced District Dining, just beside the station. This is a very stylish venue – a big space, where the bar on one side is decorated with striking Asian artwork and the seating area is focused around an open kitchen.

There’s a new player on the scene in the District Dining precinct above Chatswood station called General Chao. Menu-wise it fits in with the rest of the contemporary Asian offering in the rest of the precinct, but still stands out in its own way with bold murals splashed over its stylish bar. The restaurant itself is tucked behind the other side of the bar away from the food court area, and is quite spacious with modern decor and private dining rooms as well.

[invite] Bianca: New to District Dining and perched above Chatswood train station is General Chao. This modern Asian fusion restaurant alongside Mama Mulan (down the road) are re-defining modern Asian food in Chatswood. The fit-out is sleek, with striking painted murals and an eye-catching feature bar. As well as two private dining rooms for special occasions.

A bit pricey but the food was good ($30 for a plate of fried rice is a bit steep). Unfortunately the setting feels like you are sitting in a food court especially away from the window seats.

Amazing food, drinks and a really fun space, will definitely be returning. Prawn cracker is delicious and the generals fried chicken is the best I’ve ever had.

Modern fusion Asian restaurant, with dominant influence from Korean cuisine. Every dish we had was discovery of new flavour, nothing like what we ever had before. Menu is rather concise but each one promises interesting take on East Asian cuisine including Korean, Singaporean, Thai and Indonesian. They also have a great wine list with very reasonable pricing. Thanks to the helpful tasting note written for every label, we chose a bottle that went perfectly with our dish. Service was perfect. We’ve got great recommendations as well as thorough explanation of each dish and how to enjoy them. Overall a fantastic experience. Highly recommended gem of Chatswood.

The General Chao Restaurant is located at the Chatswood Interchange. I actually parked at the Mandarin Centre and then walked around. The General Chao Restaurant describes itself as catering to Asian cuisine. The menu includes dishes from Korea, Indonesia, Japan, India, China and Thailand. The restaurant adheres to COVID-19 protocols. Private rooms are available. The food and service were excellent. The decor is stylist and appealing.

Thoroughly enjoyed dining at General Chao! The recommendation from my friend certainly lived up to the premise. We booked the chef's table and ordered 3 entrees, 2 mains, 3 cocktails and a dessert to share was more than enough for 3 people. Then add the extra special dishes courtesy of Chef Andi and Chef Son meant that we were spoiled for choice! The executive chef engaging with the guests was an added bonus as he explained how each dish was prepared. When I informed them of my shellfish allergy, they went out of their way to ensure that what we ordered was 'safe' for me to eat. All the staff was attentive and lovely, the kitchen atmosphere was efficient and very clean! The quality and serving of the food is top notch! I will definitely be back and will certainly encourage all my foodie friends to try this place

Fantastic dining experience. Great section of beers, wines, and cocktails. Can’t go wrong with their range of reds. The food was amazing - the Blue Swimmer Crab was exceptionally good. Other highlights include the wagyu beef, prawn toast, prawn skewers and jasmine dumplings. Definitely worth a visit.

This relatively new hipster fusion Asian restaurant in Chatswood's District area did not disappoint us at our weekend dinner there. The place has a good hips ambience with background music for the young at heart and unique decoration. The services from floor staff are good and we found no fault. The food menu is not extensive but quite varied in terms of country of origins and type of proteins/ We tried their pork belly salad, tea-smoked duck dumplings, and Gen Chao fried rice which was prepared with their specialty XO sauce. We also tried an Asian-inspired cocktail that has rum and pandan essence which is quite nice. The foods are good, and the highlights were the pork-belly salad and the fried rice. This could be our favourite place to dine in Chatswood if not prevented by their quite expensive price level. Maybe for special celebration only.

Really enjoyed General Chao. They currently have a set menu at the moment with many dishes. My favourite is the cauliflower veloutte: super smooth and velvety texture and a hint of parmesan, very delicious. They also have a good wine selection too to accompany the food. Service is great and prompt. Highly recommended!

Amazing restaurant! Hands down a 10/10 evening. Everything is so well thought out and done so cleverly. Food presentation was divine, the flavours burst in your mouth and there's so much creativity in every dish. Most impressive was the service by every single staff member was spot on, everyone were lovely and very knowledgeable. If you're looking for recommendations, we had the prawn toast, Jasmine dumplings, Wagyu stir fry main and the green tea & coconut rice dessert - they were all incredible and so unique! I hope to get back there soon as there's just so much more to try off the menu. Great to have such a gem of a restaurant in Chatswood.
