The food in this small restaurant is consistently amazing which makes booking absolutely essential. On my last visit I had for the first time the sushi combo where the chef puts together the best options he can deliver (I forgot the name of the dish). It comes at a price but it was the best sushi I've ever had outside of Japan! Other dishes are more reasonable considering the quality and you can't go wrong there either. My wife is Japanese and my Japanese friends also highly recommend this restaurant. So if you're looking for authentic Japanese food in Sydney you absolutely shouldn't miss At Restaurant.

For those in Sydney who like quality and fresh exquisite Japanese food, particularly sushi. I recommend ordering "omakase" the Chef special sushi of the day, the more pricy sushi option but definitely the best! The deep fry small fish is a treat and the sashimi with jalapeño/yuzu is real good too. BYO is possible but some good sake and wine selection also available. They prefer not over booking so as to keep the service flowing, I recommend tel booking in advance and they will try to fit you in. The sushi is delicate, fresh fish finely cut, the rice perfect moisture and not too packed, and the size not too big not too small, just perfect so as to give you a perfect degustation. My favorite Japanese sushi restaurant in Sydney. Make sure you take the time to enjoy!

Absolutely love the super affordable lunch menu here! The lunch sets come with a miso soup, appetiser (tofu & salad), a hand roll and dessert, along with the main. They let you mix and match the lunch sets so you can have a taste of more dishes too. The sashimi is a hit & miss as there has been quite a few times where it’s not very fresh. Service can be quite slow sometimes as they only have one main sushi chef and two wait staffs.

The food is really excellent - great sushi and sashimi in particular. The service was friendly but disorganized, with a lot of people seeming to achieve not a lot. It’s also a bit cramped - the gap between our table and the next was less than 2cm. Don’t go for the ambience or the snappy service, but do go for the food!

Best sashimi on the North Shore. Order the omakase sashimi and let the chef take care of you. Butter clams, shellfish miso, rainbow sushi are great too. The lunch sets are amazing value and quality. Service is top notch. Book ahead, it gets busy.

Hidden gem in Crows Nest!

Decent Japanese, BYO!!!!!!!!
The At sushi set (10sushi with 6mini rolls) was so perfect! Usually restaurants would put cucumber mini rolls at the side, but this place puts tuna roll 😍.
Hot food was average, but will definitely go back and try other sashimi/sushi 😋

Have known about this place for ages and always pass by but finally got to try it last night. Sushi here is LEGIT, wish I had come here sooner.

Omakase sashimi set was fantastic. I don't ever recall having proper pickled mackerel in Australia, really takes me back to Japan, and they even had bonito. Mackerel had negi and ginger on top, balancing out the slight fishiness. Kingfish and salmon slices were premium cuts, and appropriately so considering the cost of the set.
@Sushi set was also on point. The large grain sushi rice used has great texture and is flavoured just right. If it was served just slightly warmer it would be perfect. Nice simple accompaniments on some pieces, really demonstrates the knowledge of the sushi-ya.

Uni and snapper special was a real surprise, definitely some of the freshest uni I've ever had in Australia, so creamy and sweet.

Grilled mackerel was executed nicely, real juicy and the right level of salt marination. Skin could be slightly crispier though.

Pricing is definitely on the high side, especially if you're trying to get full on sashimi, but is definitely appropriate for the quality. Honestly it was a 5+ star meal on food, but service was eh. The girl serving was nice and attentive, but the male server was brisk and cold. Drinks list needs abit more variety as well to be a real 5 star. Definitely will be returning in future to try the rest of the menu.

The best place for good Sushi in North Shore!

The place: Clean and Tidy, traditional Japan Sushi bar environment.

The food: must try - Tuna, Kingfish & Salmon Belly, Eel, Scampi.

They also have seasonal daily special fish that is not on the menu, depends on how lucky you are, my favourite is the Toro! (Tuna Belly) in different levels of fat. Also swordfish and bassgrouper.

Wagyu steak is also my favourite and must try the Sake shot, only $3.

The Staff: Nice and friendly, Sushi chef is from Japan and have been in the shop for a long time, very experienced in making great Sushi, the style of Sushi is pretty much similar to the Omasake in Japan.

Booking Tips: Very popular during lunch so must book a day in advanced, dinner walk-in around 6-6:30 and after 8, you will always get a table. But mostly booked out 7-8.

Price: The reason lunch is more popular is because they have Lunch set menu, excellent quality and cheap! $20 for Sashimi Set & $25 for Sashimi and sushi set, plus rice, handroll, tofu, salad, miso soup and ice cream. Will definitely get you full!

Dinner is more pricy but definitely deserve it, typically $70-100 per 2 person.

Others: Lunch paid by cash and dinner can use cards.

If you are looking for a good Japanese restaurant in the lower North Shore area then this place is a must try. I came here for a Saturday lunch and was happy to see there were a lot of choices from the lunch menu. The lunch deals are really good value for money as you get 2 sides, a choice of hand roll (depending on what main you get), miso soup, choice of main and a dessert, all for about $20-$25.

Great Japanese food in Crows Nest. Both the sashimi and cooked food (tempura, teriyaki) were enjoyed by all. Would recommend!

Remember to book in advance as they rarely take walk-ins.

Overall experience was good , two of us went there for dinner , made a booking beforehand . Reservation is highly recommended , only two staff on the floor others busy preparing food . Ordered deep fried white bait , avocado&broccolini tempura , batter was very light and thin , well seasoned 💯 Then we ordered Snapper sashimi with white soy , it was the highlight of the dinner then we ordered second serve because it was too good but we requested it no spring onion Nigiri came after that , probably the entree and sashimi were very impressive the sushi didn’t meet expectation , the rice was a bit mushy not sticky enough , we sat at the sushi counter saw how the seared salmon belly was made but they were cold when served Meant to eat nigiri with hands but I used sanitizer so I picked a nigiri with chopstick , I’m an Asian and I’m good at using chopsticks but rice was loose , it fell apart , not a big deal well not end of the world but it shouldn’t be

Quality of food is great. The seafood is all fresh... the sushi set is good value, though my cut of salmon was a little chewy.... with that being said everything else was great. Even the tuna which I am not a fan of.... was really soft and fresh.... the condiments that went with each piece complimented the sushi well. The calms in the clam udons were really good too... The grilled kingfish head... was a generous portion... its definately too much for 1 person to eat or even 2 with other orders.. but it was good value and cooked/seasoned well. Overall food quality is great.... though the staff is a little rushed with us having to order quickly and having us leave and pay the bill quickly too...... I understand there are time limits due to covid but we still had plenty of time but felt they still rushed us out.

One of my fav places in northern Syd. Their lunch specials are such a bang for buck. But the food is amazing, so worth it even without the special. Highly recommend the Wagyu with fries, pipis and the sushi sashimi platter.

Received the news that this absolute treasure of Crows Nest dining scene, is closing down in April with the site being required for the light rail. Atsushi San has ran the perfect Japanese restaurant for about a decade now. Simply the best, pound for pound, Japanese restaurant I've ever been to. Having lived in Japan for several months, that says a lot. You could be eating at Tsukiji fish market, and it would be no fresher. Their sushi and sashimi lunch set is the best value meal we have ever had. I've personally been having lunch twice over the years and Tetsuya himself happened to be sitting next to me at the bar. That is the best endorsement one would need. Atsushi san and your wonderful team, thank you for the memories and the great meals over so many years. Gambatte!! Scott

Excellent Japanese food in a cozy space. Favourites from our dinner were the cooked options - tempura and Wagyu beef were delicious! Staff were also really friendly and accommodating as we had brought cake for a birthday and they helped us serve it.

First time trying this place last night. I've been to Japan many times before and can confirm this place is extremely authentic. The sashimi is very fresh and chefs are awesome too. Would highly recommend.

It’s my favourite Japanese restaurant. Amazing food and services! I used to be a regular at Toriciya. But I think here is nothing but better. I hope they will reopen after the metro is ✅
