Review Yakitori Yurippi - Crows Nest

Julie Wang
We only recommended OX tongue and Chicken ball out of everything. Although I think it’s a bit overpriced for its quality, I’d still give 4 stars for the food. The 1 star is for the service, considering the Friday service as none. When we made the booking, we were made aware that the dining time is only for 1 hour. No one told us it is one off order as well. We arrived at 6.30, and when we were trying to order a mushroom at 7.13, the staff (pray to god she is not a manager or the owner) said it’s one off order, we told you. And her face was saying we did something terrible. She didn’t serve us and had no idea if other staff told us it’s an one off order. Should you at least say sorry if you didn’t inform a customer earlier or just explain you would not have enough time to prepare before 7.30? Or you could let us do take away as a solution? Instead she repeated for the second time saying we told you, other customers are waiting. The worst dining experience ever.

Went in for some skewers, I must say wow, it just taste like what I had in Japan, authentic… It brings back lots of memories and the food is outstanding here, Service is great too, Love to see many Japanese staff around here which makes it even better, The drinks are great too.

Absolutely outstanding takes me back to being in Japan. Omotenashi is all I need to say for the service. The food was outstanding we ended sitting outdoors and cooking our own skewers and opted for the premium set menu. The chicken meatball served with egg was amazing, as well as the tooth fish. To be fair all skewers were amazing by the end of the night we'd eaten our way through all but a few skewers. Shout out to Tin and the whole team for such an amazing experience highly recommend and will definitely be coming back.

Since this yakitori went famous on TikTok their prices have skyrocketed (dunno why). Still wanted to try it tho. Can’t say it was an amazing experience, more so average. I was seated later than the booking & the selection is very limited. Everything you see costed me $102, which is pre steep. For reference, Rengaya Burwood, an all you-can-eat yakiniku only costs $95 for a wider variety & greater ambience. I actually preferred the chicken thigh skewers cause it was so juicy, & recommend the in-house matcha tart. Won’t be coming back since I don’t see the hype & it’s quite far. It was a unique experience.

wow! fantastic dining experience. we had the grill-it-yourself outdoor experience, which was cosier and more relaxed. the quality, variety, and flavour was amazing. can't wait for the next time!

Great cosy little yakitori location, the food and meat was good quality. Only concern is the really small serving size so it’s not suitable for large eaters. The desserts were also decent, my favourite was the yuzu sorbet (amazing and very strong yuzu flavour) but the matcha cheesecake was incredibly dry so I didn’t like it. The service was really good, and they explained to us what each item was before serving.

Considering food is not bad for yakitori and I would give 4 star. The service is really bad. One of the staff keep stuffing up an drink orders so I complaint to the Japanese staff and she must of told the owner. By the way drink stuff up was 3 times! What do you expect me to say and of-course I would make a complaint! Owner came to me and told me I need to respect the staff… well when your staff respect the customer service and respect hospitality then I will give you a respect as we pay to get food and service. I was extremely disappointed when the owner came and told me this. What a horror night! While atmosphere looked great I walked out disappointed. If I was the owner, I would just apologize for the stuff up and I would have been happy but since he try to give me a lecture I will give this restaurant 1 star! Sorry!

This was my first visit to Yakitori but it definitely won’t be my last! Just like stepping into a restaurant in Japan! Authentic, great food and ambience the place was packed! Gyoza and yakitori super tasty and beer icy cold 🍻! Great service cannot fault! Highly recommend !!
Andrew Alex Mallari
You cannot beat the mouth watering meat cooked on top of charcoal. I highly recommend. Staff were great
Amanda Aung
This is place is great! Nothing beats some tasty meat on a stick and some Japanese beer to wash it all down. Wagyu skewer was the winner! Plus the cabbage side was super tasty too. Great service and good food.

Absolutely love the food and the sake. First time I've tried the Asahi Black beer, which I enjoyed very much. The staff very very efficient and friendly. Will definitely be dining there again.

Like a junkie trying to get his fix I have been coming here too much. If you want Japanese authenticity without flying to Japan's Yakitori laneways this is the place to visit. All it's missing is the cigarette smoke and complimentary mystery stew. I'm no expert on "Japanese authenticity" but to sum up, I love this place.
Tom Swanton
This place is legit. Delicious yakitori, friendly staff, great authentic vibe. A favourite.
Alison Wong
Best yakitori in Sydney for me. Recommend the tsukune, chicken karaage, pork jowl, and chicken thigh. Also like the yuzu sorbet

Been here three times in the past week. Absolutely love this gem of a restaurant. Warm, cozy and delicious simply prepared food makes this place feel like home and a special treat at the same time.
Maureen Chiu
This is THE joint to visit if you want authentic Japanese yakitori. Enjoy all the classics – negima (chicken + shallots), tsukune (Japanese meat ball) served with an onsen egg, pork belly, nankotsu (gristle), and giblets, just to name a few – and then wash it down with an ice cold glass of Orion beer. Pure perfection.

Love the food, the atmosphere and the people. Definitely takes me back to Japan.

真剣に美味しい焼き鳥!本格的な日本食が楽しめてお店の雰囲気も素敵スタッフのみんなもみんな優しくて何回も行きたいレストランです

Easily the best yakitori outside of Japan, Tin is always smiling, the staff were attentive and amazingly adorable. Ox tongue was my pick tonight. Can't wait to get back!

Been here multiple times, always delicious, excellent service, and a overall every time a fantastic experience :)

Nice little cosy place. Food served at good pace and friendly staff.

Definitely a must go, great ambience, great service and most importantly great food. The chicken meatball and egg is an absolute win!!
Liese Luxford
Super delicious, great service and a fun buzzy atmosphere. It was just like being back in Japan!
Robbie Chan
Fantatic food and excellent friendly service. Good selection of Japanese beers and sake. Highly recommended!!

Well I think I am too hungry when I ordered so overspent. Food overall not bad but the price shocked me. It won’t be $40 for two pp if you have drinks and decent amount of food for lunch or dinner. I don’t eat much but 18 skewer each include rice make me just full.

Great authentic Japanese restaurant serving delicious skewers and a heaping of izakaya atmosphere.
GobbleDok
Great small restaurant for your close friends. You must book a table, and not suitable for a big group.

The service is very attentive, 4 to 5 staff make sure you are looked after. They clean up the table frequently as well.
You order yakitori and other food on order form. They deliver whatever ready, not at once. Therefore you should not be hurry to eat or bring someone who aren't your close friend! This is the place where you enjoy the time with friends, with food.
Wendy
Amazing izakaya. Feels like Japan as soon as you walk in. Very good service. The highlights were chicken meatball with onsen egg, pork jowl and raw octopus. They serve many Asian beers and alcoholic drinks. Perfect way to spend a Friday night. The place is small so bookings are essential.
Constance Naomi
This place is an absolute gem! It’s a tiny restaurant with good authentic vibes. The staff members there are very friendly and attentive. I really wanted to order one of everything in the menu because everything looked and smelt so amazing while they were cooking! Will definitely come back.
Janey Elmgreen
Loved this place! Staff were lovely. We had a whole bunch of things - my fav being the chicken dish with the 63 degree egg. We also had some of their Japanese whiskey and sake which was great

Delighted to have this little place close to home. Most of the options are amazing! And very authentic Japanese style. Now that I've tried the whole menu, I know what to stick to, in order to have a 5/5 experience.

4.5 stars

My favourite yakitori in Sydney. Almost everything is delicious.
Run by Japanese with predominantly Japanese waitstaff.
Servings a little small though!

It has been 10 months since my boyfriend and I have indulged in some belly filling and finger licking meat sticks of joy known as yakitori. Decent yakitori joints in Sydney are few and far between, and the trek to the north side of the bridge was DEFINITELY worth it.
It felt like we were back in the alleys of Tokyo again when we entered Yurippi. The smell of grilled meats, the décor, and the atmosphere was very authentic. We ordered a total of 10 x 2 plates of yakitori and a couple of sides, and every plate was delivered with an ‘arigato’ or ‘thanks for waiting’ – NO, arigato to you for serving us such delicious food!! Stick after stick was filling my mouth with such deliciousness. I didn’t know where the stick of goodness started and where my tongue ended. Umami explosions from the meat were further pushed to higher levels of satisfaction from a nice cold pint of asahi black.. ON TAP MIND YOU.
We’ll definitely be back for more and losing our taste buds to some fine yakitori. My boyfriend was so lost in the flavours he could have sworn as soon as we left, 7/11’s, Family Mart’s, and Lawson’s were waiting for us outside. Alas it was just Crows Nest.

amazing food. my fave Japanese restaurant. their chicken skewer in bowl of egg by far the best dish. great service too. service was great and like the vibe of the place
Lavin.D
Was there at Sunday night 8:46pm, stuff told closed already , can’t understand why , timetable said 10:00pm close . Answer was 8:30pm last order . What kind of restraint it is ????
Ann
Foodwise, not bad, but I couldn't see anything amazing about it. Thus, considering the price, so not worth it.
Positive side was the service, polite n friendly.
Robby Jai
horrible service. rude staff. extremely dirty would not recommend. servings are ridiculously small and very expensive for such small serving. terribly slow to serve food with long wait times.
Angiet424777
Quite pricy as I spent 112.5 for one dinner. Service is good but not great. Don’t recommend go there when you starving as you might be surprised by the bill. Would be nice if you just want some snack. Recommend the chicken meatball and mushroom.

We just dined here for dinner. The place is fun and reminds me so much of Japan. However it is a little cramped and it can get really hot and stuffy in there when it's packed out. The service is friendly, quick and attentive. The staff were always checking up on us even though it was a full house. The highlights for us were the chicken dishes (so chicken with shallot, chicken skin, chicken heart, chicken gizzard and the liver). We also loved the scallop and wagyu beef. We found the pork dishes to be pleasant but not memorable. The sweet soy marinade was delicious. Our downfall was that we ordered too many sweet soy servings and not enough plain salt. Oh and don't forget the chicken karaage! That was one of the best we have had. Juicy succulent chicken which was so crispy on light on the outside. So my suggestion is to get a mix of both! We spent $105 between 2 people and that includes 2 alcoholic beverages and 1 non alcoholic. We ordered about 16 skewers between us and 3 side dishes and left stuffed!
Amanda Lim
Tiny but busy little yakitori place. Great flavor and well cooked, i particularly loved the jowl and rice with dashi. I like that it is a bbq place I can leave without smelling like it! The meatball with egg was unique and worked well.

Portions are tiny but allows you to try many different things. It is a little pricier compared to the yakiniku place next door.

Lovely quaint Japanese yakitori restaurant on a busy street. We made a 5pm booking as we have a 3 year old. Suited us fine and we had to finish in 1.5 hrs which was very do-able! We had a large variety to choose from and tried a variety which were cooked very well. My son tried a lot and loved the quail eggs! Would be nicer if the servings were a little larger for the price for some like pork belly. We had a table by the front door which gave us a good view of the street. Service was very attentive and friendly. Overall best to make booking and go early. Its a small but busy restaurant. If you don't make booking by 5.45pm on sat there are no seats left for walk ins. Food excellent!

Wow, what a gem!

Yakitori Yurippi is a traditional yakitori restaurant that specialises in charcoal grilled skewers. The menu consists of chicken, meat and seafood skewers balanced out by a small selection of vegetable skewers and side dishes. Vegetarians be warned - you will go hungry here.

The dining area seats about 30 patrons and skewers are grilled over a charcoal BBQ in an open kitchen. It wasn't too difficult to book a table on a Saturday night with a few hours' notice, though I expect that this will change as word gets around.

My mother and I ordered roughly half of the skewers on the menu and wow - every skewer was delicious, from the okra to the wagyu beef, salted chicken wing, miso cod and - quite surprisingly - the bacon-wrapped mochi (rice cake). They also have an impressively extensive alcohol and wine menu for such a small restaurant.

The prices were a little higher than shown on the Zomato menu - $3.20 per skewer and $5.40 per side dish. The skewers are quite small - about half the size of the Sydney norm for yakitori - so be prepared to have to order a dozen or so each plus side dishes in order to be satisfied.

All of the little dishes added up to about $60-65 pp with a glass of wine, which was pricier than expected, but absolutely worth it.

UPDATE: Downgrading my rating to a 4.0.

Since the 2018 new year, the serving sizes have noticeably decreased. Sadly not a good sign for the future of this restaurant.

My experience here was overall very enjoyable. The place is very cramped so it's best to book, which we luckily did. We got seated very quickly and got onto ordering food. My favourites were the Wagyu beef, Japanese omelette, and chicken meatball. They were all cooked very well with great flavour. Some foods really stood out, while others were only decent. The prices are charged per skewer which can get a little expensive but we spent around $60 for 2 people, which I found decent considering that it's yakitori. I've never had yakitori before so I really didn't have anything to compare it to. The service was also great. Would definitely come back!

Had a great time here as a couple. Food was awesome, quick, and tasty. I particularly liked the scallops, and the oxe-tounge. Beer selection was terrific - all sourced from Japan. The main guys on the staff were great - very friendly and personable. I plan to come back with a few friends and put a proper dent in the drinks menu which had a great range of Japanese Whisky and Sochu.

Cute little Japanese place, decided to come here for a break from studying on a public holiday. First perk is that it actually WAS open on a public holiday (Queen's Birthday)! It's a small place so I'd suggest booking beforehand.

My favourites were the Miso Sake Black Cod (so very tasty!), Scallop with Kombu Butter (butter was delicious) and the Chicken Thigh (sooo soft!). Everything else was nice but not particularly outstanding. Definitely a good place for an izakaya fix though because of their decent skewers and drinks selection. Food came out quickly and service was friendly. Only complaint is in the price, almost $3 per skewer is pretty pricey and can get steep very quickly if you were like us and wanted to try everything haha :P Total came to about $45pp amongst 6 people.

worst japanese food we ever had. booked a table and arrived on time, the waitress showed us the table, we immediately spoted a big cockroach walking on the table...... the waitress used some tissues to grab it away..... we tried to ask for another table but got refused. no choice sat down and eat, very very slow food.....have to wait for a long time for every food. suddenly asked us for last order, there was a really rude voice....we showed them the confirmation email that was sent by them saying we still have at least an hour time for our reservation....but the male replied to us as "no choice we have customer coming" well if you want us to leave earlier then why sent us an email for our reservation time? we definately will not go back.

An unassuming little shop just off Pacific Highway. As the name indicates, yakitori is the speciality here and it is excellent. The menu is short, consisting of assorted food on sticks in sweet soy or salt, as well as some sides. My favourite skewers were the ox tongue and the chicken livers. The tongue was so tender and full of beefy flavour, while the livers were perfectly cooked without the usual blood taste. I also enjoyed the tsukune with 63 degree egg. For sides, we had the spinach and the cabbage. There is also a large variety of alcohol, including some interesting homemade ones. Prices are per skewer so it's definitely not a cheap feed if you're hungry. But the food is delicious and staff were warm and friendly so points for that. Best to book as the place is small; not advisable for large groups.

Ot a bad jap skewer place although if you go crazy with ordering it can get a bit exxy

Portions a bit on the small size and not too consistent, sometimes u get 2 things or 3 on the skewer which makes it a bit confusing. Need to order heaps to make sure youre not hungry

Best dishes were the meat skewer with 63 degree eggs, the japanese rice balls and ox tongue.

Did not rate the scallop (too dry)

Staff is very friendly, service top notch

Overall not a bad place althought loses pts a bit due to price

Initial impressions of this atmospheric yakitori restaurant were great. My wife and I recently returned from a trip to Tokyo and looked to see if Sydney could dish up a taste of Shinjuku's famous yakitori laneways. We found it at Yakitori Yurippi. We were so impressed that when I had two business colleagues lined up for a trip to the city I knew exactly the right place to take them on a Saturday night. I specifically wanted to replicate the experience offered by the kitchen counter seating and so booked a week in advance for three seats there. We turned up right on time after I had spent quite a bit of time assuring my colleagues that they were in for something special. Sadly we were disappointed to find that we had been assigned seats in a tight wall-facing bench space where we couldn't even talk with each other. Naturally, I reminded the floor manager that I had booked the counter seats and he said that it must have been a misunderstanding. This was a flat-out lie because I then noticed my name clearly written on the counter table seating plan for the restaurant that was pinned up on the wall behind him. I pointed this out to him and he gave me one of those frustrating loss-of-face moments where he basically closed down after being caught out. The reality was that he saw a way of getting a large group onto the kitchen counter and set our prior booking aside. It was a deeply infuriating moment. We walked out. I hope that this man reflects upon his lack of professionalism and endeavours to improve Yakitori Yurippi's service in the future. It nearly ruined a night. Fortunately, I found seats at another favourite restaurant of mine – one that considers manners and service as a virtue as well as the food they serve.

Most skewers are of good quality products but they don't come cheap. Good selection of japanese beers and whiskies, attentive service, clean.

Great little place! It's a bit of a cozy environment but entirely comfortable to dine in, and for some reason this slightly comfy-crampy feel inside makes i feel oddly authentic, as if you really might have stepped into a little Japanese sliver of a restaurant in the streets of Tokyo. Food was all amazing, so well cooked and some really awesome selections. They had crispy chicken skin on skewers! And little grilled chicken hearts IT WAS SO CUTE. I loved it.
Melanie Ung
You'll need a reservation for this place. Great atmosphere, loved sitting at the bar. Staff was attentive. Loved the chicken meatball 63° egg, chicken thigh and shallot, karaage chicken, burdock root chips. The bacon mochi was alright. I would recommend this for a night out!

A nice little spot in Crows nest for Japanese skewers. We had Orion beer on tap to go with it, which went down well. The customer service was fast and attentive. The food is of very good quality. We tried various dishes and the food was served promptly. The food portions are a little small and we ended up spending nearly $90 between 2 people. However, we felt the food was very nice. Our favourite was the wagyu skewers however the other dishes were delicious and yummy as well.

Nice place - very good food. Young crowd. Attention given to detail. We like going to this small yakitori place - casual and happy atmosphere.

This place is an izayaka- style (informal Japanese gastropub) restaurant which offers delicious made-to-order char-grilled skewers and various drinks such as beer, wine, sake, whiskey, etc. They are very busy over the weekends, so expect at least a 15-30 minute wait, but you can always book a table to ensure your seats.I started the night with their plum whiskey as it was slightly sour-citrus taste, which was very refreshing, especially on a hot summer night! Overall, all the skewers we tried were super delicious and juicy too! My favourite skewer of the night was definitely the Negima (Chicken & Shallot). Price-wise it does seem a little pricier for the portion you are pay but I would definitely be coming back here for the taste and atmosphere. Hopefully they will have special seasonal skewer menu in the future! Read more details on the other skewers on my blog :

The last couple of months have shown that winter wasn’t just coming, it was here and hell-bent on freezing the behinds of every Sydneysider. But aside from your usual comfort foods of soups, stews and ramen, taking a trip to your local yakitori den also works as a keep warm tactic. That’s exactly what we did back in July when the good guys at Yurippi in Crows Nest invited us to try some of their menu offerings plus new chilly weather specials.
2 Hungry Guys
Yakitori Yurippi is one of very few yakitori restaurants around Sydney. For those not familiar with yakitori, it is Japanese skewers. Traditionally chicken, the term yakitori is now used much more broadly to represent any type of Japanese skewer. At Yakitori Yurippi, they have the charcoal grill going, just as you would see it in Japan.
Does My Bomb Look Big In This
In Japan you get your yakitori (chicken-on-a-stick) fix in izakayas, informal gastro-pubs where salary men fill in the void between work finishing and dinner. Heading up a "young but enthusiastic” team, Tin Jung Shea (ex-The Cliff Dive) has recreated the same super-relaxed drinking atmosphere right here in Crows Nest.Settle in for beverages and bites at the polished concrete bar with a bird’s-eye view of the stick-flipping action, or pull up a table and turn your visit into a casual dinner using clever sides. First on the agenda is washing away the sorrows of your work-life with a palate cleansing ale. The one to drink here is the golden Orion Draft ($8/400ml) from Okinawa - the hip, sub-tropical outpost of Japan. It’s crisp, refreshing and mild enough to be a great sake chaser if you’re a fan of double-parking. You know I am, so against a bowl of Edamame ($4.90) and some even better Burdock Root Chips ($4.90) that make a tasty, lightly seasoned alternative to potato chips, I got stuck into sake. The Yurippi team prepared me three tokkuri (flasks) of different sakes and gave me some tips on which dishes they’d suit best. You can get them to do the same, or skip straight to my favourite, the Yuki-no-Bousha ($25/300ml), which has a full, round flavour that makes it a hit with grilled meat. Start with...

It’s been a while (I sadly realised) since I’d been to Yakitori Yurippi last. But lucky for me, Chef Tin invited us back to check out his winter menu a few weeks ago and it was truly epic. In fact, I was getting mega cravings for yakitori while preparing this post – hope you’re ready to drool!

What works?
An authentic looking yakitori bar. The wagyu, pork belly and chicken karaage were nice.
We were rushed in and rushed out allbeit served very quickly. The yeshibori (???) premium beer was a lovely complement to the yakitori.

What doesn't?
As Japanese yakitori goes there is limited variety in flavours. Some parts of the menu were not available as we were early ie 6pm dinner.

Overall:
A nice meal but I wouldn't call it value for money.
Rebecca Tay
Service is fast, friendly and knowledgeable. The restaurant is cosy and gets full pretty fast.
We've dined here at least 3 times and each time at least one menu item has sold out. The skewers are all cooked well and tasty(- however I haven't ventured into the more exotic sounding skewers). The potato salad and fried chicken are good sides. I also enjoyed the green teas.

Cozy new joint in Crows Nest next to my favourite Kashiwa. Lovely staff and not too crowded with good ventilation. Really recommend their Tsukune (chicken meatball and egg) and chicken karaage. Gyoza is also not bad. Price creeps up on you though and eventually you'll realise you're actually full!
Sus.licious
Really enjoyed the experience, izakaya has been my favorite lately. A friend just recommended this spot. The place is crowded and small, very "Japanese" styled. The waitstaff were nice, not the biggest food menu, yet they've done it really well, love the vibe, tiniest table and the most "intimate" experience, but it brought me back to Japan, (despite you don't smell like cigarette after). Decent drink menu, sake, shoju, yuzushu, umeshu, etc. my favorite dish was the grilled rice ball with miso, it was delicious (only available after 8pm)
Randomness_of_existence
Cutest little izayaka place. I went here with a group of friends for a casual bday celebration. I was suprised they could fit us in, but luckily they had an area where they could fit about 10ppl.

The menu was so simple. You get a choice of different types of yakitoris and you choose whether you want a salt base or soy. I recommend the chicken meatballs with the onsen eggs. It's delicious. The drinks menu has a variety of Japanese beer, sake and wines. The yuzu sake is great.

The service is great. The owner was very friendly, attentive and made the rounds to the customers to make sure everything was good.

Prices was decent. It's easy to get caught up on how many skewers you're ordering. I know we did LOL. But they were all delicious :)

Definitely a place to visit for a few drinks and bar snacks. It's not a place for a proper meal though. You won't find any large meals on the menu. Worth a visit for sure!

Yakitori Yurippi is a small spot in Crows Nest if you are looking for a quick bite to eat and some cold beer. I'd driven past a few times and only had the chance to eat there this week. The service was quick, the skewers were delectable - my favourites were chicken heart, beef tongue and chicken skin with salt. Not much seafood, but I didn't mind at all considering the skewers were only $2.90 each! It's a great spot so I've added it to my regular list now. Loved it.
The Napoli Alert
A local little cheap eat serving yakitori (skewers) and other small plate Japanese dishes. Chicken karage and gyoza were tasty, liked the pork belly skewer as well. Would have like to see prawns or scallops or other seafood. Service was a bit stop start but good once it got going.

I know it’s a big call, but the yakitori (and everything else) at Yakitori Yurippi is literally some of the best I’ve ever had. It’s this little unassuming place that’s just opened on Falcon Street in Crows Nest – you might have missed it on your way through actually, but please take note next time you pass by! S., who’s spent a lot of time in Japan, immediately said it reminded her of all the little eateries in Tokyo. Not to mention the kind hospitality of Tin, the owner, who is super friendly and you can see him working behind the bar just as hard as all his employees!
Insatiable Munchies
Remember the Cliff Dive? Well guess what? Yurippi of the amazing skewers have now opened their own place in Crows Nest! The vision of owner Tin was more yakitori and less tuck shop, and it’s here that he really gets to stretch his wings to fulfil that dream. Like all foodies, it actually runs in the family. Tin’s grandfather was a chef in Hokkaido for a hotel, and after a spell of fighting the urge through becoming an engineer, Tin is standing in amongst the smoke, serving upwards of 500 skewers to hungry customers every day!
