Review Kazuki's - Melbourne

Laura Jardine
Well now I know the answer to the age old question, what would my last meal be? Kazuki’s was amazing and I’d die happy if that was my last meal! Amazing service, great attention to detail, each course was interesting and really expansive as a whole, the space is beautiful, the food shines. I loved the egg and bisque which was a special, the duck was transcendental. I could go on and on but really if you’re reading this, stop reading this and make a booking! Absolutely pleasure, thank you

At $200 per person it's a fantastic experience for fine dining. Elite level service as you would expect and great tasting food. I'll keep it short because every dish was delicious. For me personally though, the most tasty dishes were the starters. An array of small tasty dishes to prepare you for what is to come. Personally, the nori crisp, whipped cod roe gnocco fritto was my favourite tasting dish of the night. It is a pricey for a dinner but it is worth the money.

Spectacular high end fine dining experience with a lot of attention to detail and fantastic service. Taste explosions and unexpected combinations! Really special care with wine pairings as well. Highly recommended for a *lavish* and tasty special night out.

One the the best gastronomical experiences of my life. A perfectly curated 7 course meal. The wagyu, ox tongue and the oysters with Uni. Ensure to try the cocktails if you choose to opt out of the wine list for the meal. The service was warm and kind for such a lovely fine dining experience.

We were looking forward to dining at Kazuki’s however we left extremely disappointed. We opted for the 7 course menu with add on oysters. Everything was average and not worth the premium $200+ pp price tag. We felt like the ingredients used were not of high quality or worth the price (e.g. one snack was just a piece of cucumber with sauce, salmon tart not filled to the top with salmon). We’ve had much better and cheaper dining experiences at other fine dining restaurants across Australia and unfortunately won’t be returning to Kazuki’s. The service was also extremely slow between courses, 30-40min wait between every course, total time for the entire meal almost 3 hours. Such a shame.
Hello. imnikki
Finally visited Kazuki's and it was a great meal indeed. Love the mussel crackers, nori crisp + whipped cod roe and salmon tartare - all so fresh and flavourful. The BBQ ox tongue was meaty and tender, I could eat this every day! The seafood are cooked to perfection here, as seen with the scallops + coconut + jalapeno, and the octopus that came with the hapuka. Love the interesting take on Saint Agur blue cheese served with hazelnuts and strawberries, I'm definitely only eating blue cheese this way from now on! The service is second to none and you'll definitely feel right at home here.

As a human, I sometimes find the feeling of hunger irritating, especially if im busy. But when I ate at Kazukis, I was never so grateful to be born with tastebuds. One of the best meals of my life. Everything was a brilliant mix of flavors and concepts I didn't know could be explored until I tried it. Kazuki is a brilliant chef and if you get the chance to eat his divine cooking, you will understand what I mean

Friend booked in for Christmas dinner! 8 entrees was amazing except for the kangaroo jerky (a bit tough). Love the scallops, Moreton Bay and king George. Swapped the lamb dish to beef. Not to mention their black butter was impressive! Had a great night and thanks for amazing food and services!

Thank you Kazuki for an excuisite gastronomic 5 course banquet last night. Each dish was prepared & served with perfection & perfectly balanced flavours. We loved the special Birthday surprise desert.

Awesome meal, good choice of local wines with excellent hospitality. All dish they provided had a touch of Japanese taste such as Yuzu, and I loved it.

It was an amazing experience dining in this institution! Both myself and my partner had a wonderful time dinning. It's good to have this kind of caliber of restaurant in our chic town.

One of the best meals I've ever had in Melbourne and the vicinities.

High quality Japanese restaurant with brilliant food, very professional and attentive staff in a building with great atmosphere. Would hold itself well against some of Melbourne's finest.

Amazing food! Only second to the incredible service from the front of house staff! A thoroughly enjoyable experience.

Food was great but customer service disappoints. Staff appeared to be abrupt and unfriendly/rude.

We dined at Kazuki’s for lunch and chose the 5 course tasting menu which began with snacks as the first course followed by other dishes. We absolutely loved the snacks, which were all delicious and unique. Another stand out was the bread served with seaweed butter, we really appreciated the offer to refill this during our meal. The other dishes in our lunch were nice and the flavours subtly balanced but after how amazing the snacks were, we were a little underwhelmed. Also, we wished the pacing of food was faster as our meal was quite long for the number of courses we chose.

Service was good and the restaurant space itself is lovely. We were particularly impressed with how well they adapted the meal for one in our group who had food allergies.

Expensive! Amazing! Fantastic surroundings! Definitely one to be experienced. I’ve been wanting to try this since they’ve come to the big smoke.

You can actually hear conversation in the peace and quiet! Impeccable service and small dishes that don’t leave you starving.
Good wine list - not cheap but by the glass if you like.
Food interesting and some a bit overworked but the winner was zucchini flower stuffed with smoked eel.
Left a bit poorer but overall a great meal to remember.

We sat down for a 60th celebration and the 7 course meal, the first courses served were delicious and lovely. However, after the first 2 courses things began drastically slowing down and when we asked about our food we were told the dishes were ready to come out, the food took another 15minutes to be served. After 3 hours and only being served 4 of the dishes we had sat down and ordered. Upon asking for the bill the manager was incredibly unpleasant and informed us that 45minutes between each servings is the norm for them, this lie would mean our 6.30 reservation would have pushed past midnight. Seriously consider your time if you intend to go here.

A place for a special occasion, the dishes were served artistically as you would expect for a degustation. Decor is classy with dim lighting and set in one of the traditional buildings in Carlton. Staff seemed a bit new so did take away from polish of the experience but service was still friendly and attentive and we weren't too fussed. It was a fun dining experience overall. I loved the "snacks". Their bread is amazing and I couldn't stop eating it. The foie gras is delicious! The cheese dish grew on me and became the most memorable, though my partner wasn't fond of the subtle licorice flavours that came through so I helped him finish it. But that's the great thing about degustations, being able to try different flavour combinations that you wouldn't expect. We also had nearly every sake on the list and thought that they were outstanding.

Can’t believe there is no napkin in a restaurant, and the waiter has not been trained at all rude and unprofessional !

There is no one template for a wonderful dining experience. The beauty of eating out is the variety, especially when it comes to the scene in Melbourne. Restaurants like Kazuki’s are a study in themselves.

Originally located in Daylesford, this nod to Japanese cuisine, has found its way to Lygon Street in Carlton of all places. The room is purpose fitted, and both downstairs and upstairs have that restrained beauty that fits with the cuisine in a sense, though there is a bit more going on than meets the eye in that regard.

When you see “Moreton bay bug, ponzu, sake” on a menu you might think of simply the protein in a sauce given it is one of seven courses. Here that is not even half the story. The generous subtle bug meat is encased in a dumpling skin that you can only make when you are not churning them out by the dozen. It is quite simply stunning.

Enjoyed the food and ambiance. The food was great, with nothing I could complain about. Would definitely be going back soon.

Man, lately I’ve been dishin out stars like this place dishes out dishes. Well, the dishes they’re dishin are mainly delish fish. We were walkin along in Carlton (spaghetti kingdom) and couldn’t believe it mate when we saw a Japanese joint. Food gud restaurant gud everything good go there.

The food was excellent from starter to main then to dessert. Perfectly seasoned lamb with a sweet finishing note really accentuated its umami. The dessert was eyes opening, salty miso with sweet twist to it, perfect balance between all textures and flavours.. However! Moreton bay bug dumplings was way too salty, the filling felt like i was drowning in salt, washed away all sweetness from bay bug and over powered entire dish. Really wish the chef can be gentle with his salt next time

Booked for the Sunday 4 course tasting menu and loved it. The restaurant is modern, minimalistic and monochrone in its grey color scheme, both if you know a little bit about true Japanese food, the food is the highlight, not flashy interiors or special clothes and music. This restaurant is special.
The presentation of the food is wonderful. The flavours and combinations are exceptional. Whilst not a large menu in both food and wine, what is presented and available is of quality and substance.

I have been there for twice.
The foods were amazing and great service.
They make foods based on French but also used a lof of Japanese ingredients which was very interesting for me:)

I came here for a friend's Hens Night, the food and service was excellent.

We had the 5-course which included:-

salmon caviar, cod roe, nori
chicken liver, umeshu
duck heart, furikake

kingfish, ginger, citrus
prawn, sake, avruga
pork, crab, dashi, corn
matcha, sesame, strawberry

The food was well-seasoned and everything was presented beautifully. It was my first time trying duck heart and it was cooked so well that you wouldn't know that you were eating innards if you weren't told. I must admit the menu here at Kazuki's in Carlton is very different to the one they had at Daylesford but nonetheless, it was very enjoyable.

And the ultimate highlight (as always) is their housemade butter; made with nori, umeboshi plum, sake and squid ink. Kazuki's housemade butter is one of my weaknesses especially when you slather it on the warm bread that it's served it. Their butter and bread is a match made in heaven, the perfect combination where each bite leaves you wanting more.

p/s: you can buy their butter to take away :)

"I visited with my family on anniversary."The staff were very friendly, and every dishes were wonderful!
I was very pleased with the beautiful cuisine and the wine that suit it.

My husband and I enjoyed a wonderful evening at Kazuki's. The intimate setting, the freshest of sashimi and sushi was exactly what we'd hoped it would be. The staff were friendly and polite. I only wish the evening could have lasted longer.

We were lucky enough to find this place whilst in Melbourne on a four week road trip. We were not disappointed with our choice. We arrived without a booking and they were able to find us a table.really really beautiful food came from kitchen and friendly staff helped find right drinks from their wine list. deco, atmosphere also wonderful!!! highly recommended!!
Alex
Came here with friends and really enjoyed the freshness and quality of the ingredients especially the seafood which was incredible . However some of the dishes were a little imbalanced but overall would be glad to go again . Will only get better .

The space is lovely and the staff were very attentive. Great wine list but unfortunately that’s where our positives end.

We have dined at Kazuki’s in Daylesford 4-5 times and we really struggled to see that this was the same restaurant. We had the 7 course and found the food to be very bland. It just didn’t have any surprises or that special something that makes you return. It was fresh and beautifully presented but lacked any type of seasoning or flavour. Dessert was ok but again no surprise.

Maybe it’s still in opening mode but for such an established restaurant this was a big disappointment. Unfortunately not going to cut it in Melbourne town.

So I'm going to be as polite as I can because their service wasn't bad. However after my first experience with them when they were in daylesford (which was great) I'd have to say that I wasn't impressed at all. We had the 7 course (8 with the wagyu) degistation and literally every course was a miss for me. From the first savoury dish (duck heart skewers) to the last (lamb neck), every course was off the mark. No seasoning causing the dish to taste like exactly what it was... Heart and neck! I felt like I was in a abattoir and the desert definitely didn't leave me wanting more. Whilst the food was fresh the flavours were lacking and it's disappointing given expectations I had. I can't even say it was because they were trying to be authentic Japanese, That's definitely not Japanese flavours.
