Review Lucy Liu Kitchen And Bar - Melbourne

If you’re looking for a buzzing atmosphere and fun dishes to share, this is a great choice. The service was amazing, our server made multiple dishes vegan and gluten free for us! Cocktails were super delicious and unique as well. The only issue I have is the music was a bit too loud for me, but that’s just personal opinion. Overall, a really great experience!

The most friendly staff ever... combined with crazy good cocktails and delicious food. My friends and I looked for a quick drinks last Saturday night and after we checked few places with at least 45 minutes waiting list (ridiculous), I decided to bring them to the Lucy, simple like that... just to mention that I haven't been, but always wanted to. So the staff was yep pop in and order... so one hour later before the kitchen get close, we are with some delicious food and more drinks as not expected! Thanks to the great staff and definitely we will see you again!

Ordered the 5 plates, all dishes are good and just the dumplings were with too much vinegar for me. Definitely a Lovely place for lunch with friends, clients or family.

Great restaurant and quintessential Melbourne, where you enter through an alleyway and are transported a whole world away with an absolute assault of flavours and textures. Easy to see why this place is so popular and always busy! Cocktails were ok and the service was a little slow, but it was a busy night so can understand.

What a great find, I like this place even better than Chin Chin. Simple delicious food and the drinks were great too especially the mixed drinks, I mean cocktails! We didn't have booking, so it was a bit of a confusing start... But we managed to jump in for 50 mins on a table and that was divine. Staff were friendly and helpful. Thank you guys!

An absolute great find on our exploration of Melbourne. Asked about their gluten free menu and my partner was given a specific dietary requirements menu. Not the normal one. The food was absolutely fantastic, the rendang was some of the best I have had. The staff were super friendly, and even for a packed evening the food came out super quick.

Awesome service. The vegan/ vegetarian set menu was very delicious and really filling. I couldn't finish all the food. The cauliflower was superb!

We had the best waitress yesterday (she was lovely and had glasses). The food was good! Fish tasted sooo good with a type of chilli jam, asian greens - on point and calamari was so nice. The cocktails we ordered were different but it was very nice! Love the ones recommend! Thanks so much for a good night

Prior to lockdown, I had the opportunity to finally visit @lucyliumelbourne. We opted for the 'let lucy choose' option and was surprised by 5 tasty dishes. Service was amazing despite being super busy. I was a bit sad that the set menu didn’t include their popular soft shell crab or kingfish sashimi. However, i am definitely going back to order them!! Ambience was truly phenomenal - I absolutely loved the many coat/jacket hangers provided throughout the restaurant and, the rest room area was totally instagram worthy. Overall, a brilliant place. ⠀
Food: 3.5/5⠀
Service: 4/5⠀
Ambience: 4.5/5
If you want asian fusion, this is some of the best your gonna get in Melbourne! The pork hock and baos are a MUST 👌 Just be sure to book otherwise you'll be waiting!

I only came for drinks and dessert. Cocktails were great but the desserts were horrible. Had the viet iced coffee and banana fritter ones. Would not come back to give the savoury stuff a chance Cos of this.

Went here the other day in a group of 6. We were made to sit on bar stools. We asked if we can sit on a table with regular chairs as one of us had a back issue, but they said we couldn't. This table is also near the kitchen and the pos system so the servers would walk around us all the time. A couple of times a guy server bumped into me and said nothing. I guess it's all in a day's work?

We had the lamb shoulder dahl - kinda tasteless. Sauce was definitely lacking in flavor. The roti was good though.

The yellowfin sashimi was ok. The sticky pork belly was good -sauce was great. However, the pork skin was very chewy.

Duck was average.

In short, there's nothing that i'd like to come back to. Just go to Chin Chin.

Went there on a mystery food tour.
It was the last of 5 meals in 4 hours. Welcomed enthusiastically by the staff.
House wine included was OK. Food came quickly. Tempura was nice and light and cooked perfectly. Definitely recommend and will be going back 👍

A vibrant dinner location, service is efficient and friendly although you do get the feeling they want to turn the tables over quickly. The food is of a good standard, whilst not being exceptional. A pleasant enough place to enjoy a celebratory dinner.

Came here with a group of 8 people with a booking but we didn’t get seated until 30 minutes after our booking time.

Since we were a group of 8 we went with a set menu.
I would’ve rated this place higher if the service wasn’t so bad. There was a wait time of a minimum of 20 minutes between each meal that came out.
The waiters weren’t apologetic and it was very hard to get their attention.
Patricia
I loved Lucy Liu! The food is beautiful and great tasting. THE TEMPURA PRAWN AND EGGPLANT IS AMAZING! ITS A MUST TRY👌🏼😍

Came and booked a table of 3 at Lucy Liu to celebrate my friend's birthday!

Ordered:
🥟 Barramundi & Scampi dumplings: with chilli ginger and spring onion ($17.00)
🥦 Tumeric Cauliflower: with sesame tofu dressing and furikake ($17.50)
🥗 Green Papaya Salad: tomato, peanuts, tried shrimp & hot chilli ($18.50)
🦆 Crispy Fried Sichuan Duck: with watercress salad & tamarind sesame dressing ($39.00)
🍖 Roasted short rib with rendang curry: coconut, herbs and pickles ($40.00)

Review:
The dish standout for me was the roasted shortrib with rendang curry. The meat was falling off the bone, making it a soft and very pleasant experience while the trim piece of fat kept things very flavourful. It comes with a side of rice, keeping things very real and delicious. I would highly recommend this dish!

Another standout was the efficient and friendly service. The waitress was receptive to us ordering, and was quick in clearing away dishes. This is definitely a high class, attentive service.

The not so greats:
- the dark lighting is shocking for photos, but nothing a cheeky (slightly embarassing) torch can't fix. Also a bit hard to see what you're actually eating ahaha.
- although the roof is high, you're sitting quite close to the next tables and the sound of conversations bounces around. You might find that you'll need to raise your voice!

Food is quite good, but definitely on the more expensive side for what you get. Everything on the menu is “To be shared” which is funny, because the portions for each meal are tiny, and most are basically nibbles.

Venue is groovy, bar is overly expensive, and the wait for a single drink is at-least 10 minutes. Beware of coming on a weekend as it is super packed for a small place, and they cram more than they really should. So expect to be bumping shoulders at the bar all night, or being cramped up right next to another table.

A great place for dinner with the girls. Not only does the place look good but they have a great feed me menu and cocktails to share. The food was well prepared full of flavour and customer service was perfect. Would definelty go back.

Came here after finding that we had a bit of time to kill in the city. I’ve eaten at nearly every place around this joint but finally decided to go in. Didn’t disappoint. Was going to get the 5 course tasting menu but opted to get the 7 course for an extra 10 bucks. I really enjoyed everything. From what I understand they don’t advertise many of the selections on the menu so it’s just dumb luck whatever you get. We got a king fish sashimi on cassava, tasty. Vietnamese beef jerky salad, good palate cleanser. Tempura prawn in beetle leaf, good dashi broth. Fried chicken ribs with kewpi mayo, crispy. Don’t know what those wontons were but they were awesome. Steamed rockling in a fragrant broth or similar with Asian greens went down a treat. Chicken in master stock, supoib. I heard a lot about this place and all was true. Will definitely go back and would definitely recommend. Those two broths at the end were really great for dipping your rice into. #Tasty

We had the best experience dining at Lucy Liu. It's Asian Fusion at it's best.

I'd definitely recommend booking well in advance, we wanted to go on a Saturday night and had to book at least 3 weekends prior. However it was well worth the wait. Just also know there is a time limit (I can't remember exactly) but we definitely didn't feel at all rushed. Tables are also very close together.

We ordered the thai fish cakes, tumeric cauliflower, tempura prawn and eggplant and the drunken free range chicken. Each one was absolutely delicious - I'd recommend them all to try! My favourite was probably the eggplant dish. Next time, I'll definitely try a couple of the desserts as they sounded delicious but we were too full.

Can't wait to visit again!

I came for a casual family Sunday lunch and it was great. We started off with oysters which were fresh and flavourful, but a little small. The kingfish sashimi was very unique in flavour and texture. The tuna tataki was more predictable, with the rice cracker and dressing; there were no set rules on how to eat it so it was also possible to enjoy the tuna by itself. My favourite was the soft-shelled crab pancake roll which was delicious. The nam khao tod was a bit salty but of a very generous serving size and filled us up as a main dish. We had the ginger creme brulee and coconut parfait to finish and both were really tasty.
The service was very friendly throughout and patient with our questions, even getting the sommelier to tell us more about their namesake wines. I loved the placemat menus with 3D animal prints on them and that both chopsticks and knife and fork were provided.

The food is simply to die for! We ordered Mussels, Papaya Salad, Tuna Tataki, Dumplings and Pork with additional jasmine rice. What a perfect night! Definitely will come back.

To try:
- fresh betel leaf; fresh quality kingfish and tuna marinated in soy and ginger which gave a lovely umami punch
- kingfish sashimi; this was beautifully presented and the toasted coconut was made into a creamy foam/mousse like texture. It made for a great balance of refreshing and moreish flavours
- soft shelled crab jianbing pancake roll; not quite your authentic jianbing roll, but the spicy hoi sin was on point and I am a sucker for soft shell crab
- salt & pepper chicken ribs; to be honest these aren't out of the ordinary, but who doesn't love S&P chicken ribs

To skip:
- slow roasted lamb shoulder; I usually always order the slow roasted lamb shoulder if there is one on the menu, however in future I wouldn't recommend ordering it at Lucy Liu. From the moment we bit into this, we regretted our decision. Everything from the lamb to the dahl lacked in flavour
- peking duck dumplings; the skin was too thick and all we could taste was dough and hoi sin

A decent asian fusion option, let down by a few dishes. I may return, you just need to order wisely!!

All About The Feeds
The overall setting of the restaurant was casual but also suitable for a nice dinner. Although the seating was only 1.45 mins I didn't feel too rushed and the food came out promptly. The tables were a little too close together so there wasn't a lot of space especially if you were on the 2 seater tables.

I enjoyed the small bites; Fresh Betel Leaf which was different to how it's traditionally presented and was flavourful. Yellow fin tuna tataki, which had great flavour to it and a nice cut tataki. We also had sticky pork belly which was good but I was hoping for something a little more different in taste. The soft shelled crab pancake roll was average.

The slow roasted lamb shoulder for main was quite big and also came with rice and roti bread which sets you up for a decent sized meal. The lamb was soft and easily fell off the bone. Taste wise, it wasn't anything too exciting or different. It got a bit sickening by the end of it.

Walked in with no reservations but quickly seated, great customer service and food was tasty and came out at reasonable time. Beef rendang and steamed cod were top notch! We will be back, thank you.

We ordered 2x jasmine rice but the staff failed to mention one of the mains had rice with it. So we had extra rice and that we wouldn’t have been able to finish. It was good they didn’t charge us for the extra portion.
Soft shell crab - jianbing was the best I’ve ever tried. The sauce worked so well. And the roti that came with the lamb shoulder was so flaky and delicious.

Definitely deserves the hype! Went in with low expectation, but the food was amazing!!

Had my birthday here, food was amazing, delicious and interested, a great place to go with friends, the food perfect for sharing, and the service was very good. Defiantly would like to revisit.

Great venue to eat and chill. I love the ambiance.

Yum!
Came here on a weeknight and couldn’t believe how full it was! Glad we booked!
We sampled dumplings, buns, pork belly, duck and greens with a mocktail each (it was Tuesday after all) and we rolled out for $65/head.
The service was really friendly and helpful!
Highly recommended!

I’ve been here twice and the food is great but service was a let down this time. We knew we only had the table for 1.45 hrs but the whole time we felt rushed with staff constantly coming over to ask how we were ‘tracking’. They gave us the bill without us asking and looked annoyed when we ordered dessert. The staff were slow initially taking our order and should have asked us in advance if we wanted dessert so it could be delivered prior to our vacate time. We left annoyed, which ruined our dinner unfortunately.

Fantastic food and service every time I have dined here.

$29 express lunch menu is great value.

Don’t hesitate to take on wait staff’s suggestions for dishes, I’ve not had one bad dish here!

TASTY WITH A HINT OF BITTERNESS.

Had a ‘nice’ night here with my friends. The atmosphere is cool, they had some nice touches reminiscent of a place that is all about fusion.

The service at the door was great as I got a last minute table due to a cancelation.

But one of the waiters are low key racist- I mean there’s one dish written in an Asian language and he straight up said “You guys will know what that is”. And me and my friends were like “no...” and then he said “Oh i just stereotyped you Didn’t I? ” . How could you possibly assume I would know 2,300 asian languages that exist in the world and be able to read the title of one? LOL I mean. I just can't deal.

So like.

Foods good but you know.

Service was super weird. Then the same guy kept coming up and checking on us but look now- you can’t rectify that mate. So will I be back? No thanks.
Cmzajicek
I loved the atmosphere, the food and the service - everything was fantastic! We enjoyed all of our dishes and even though the restaurant was really busy and loud, you could still actually hear your group talk in the table, so a great Kidd of atmosphere but still hearing each other! Yum yum yum!

Food was so average for the prices. Unfortunately had much better dumplings at my local Chinese takeaway at a fraction of the price and much larger servings. All the food was very underwhelming and the service was the worst part. Everyone looked like they didn’t want to be there and the man serving our table was very unpleasant. He would stand over us waiting for us to finish a dish or a drink to take it away. This didn’t encourage us to order more but rather to get out of there. He kept making sarcastic comments to us throughout the night about how long we took to choose something off the menu or eat something. Very uncomfortable, couldn’t wait to leave. It took ages to get the bill so tried to go up to pay and was told off by another staff member. Don’t know why this place is so popular, we left to go to elsewhere for dessert being so put off by the service. When there are so many other amazing restaurants in Melbourne, I wouldn’t come back.

This place is really funky decor wise, very trendy. I’ve been here a few times now and for me it’s just missed the mark unfortunately. Service a bit slow, the food here is pleasant however not exciting and for the price I kind of expect more. Not much to say other than it’s ok, won’t be rushing back any time soon.
Kim @FabulousDining
This venue is awesome. So typical Melbourne. Walk down a dark alleyway towards a neon sign. The entry is very groovy and then you walk into a really well designed, funky, misery space. The decor is fabulously appropriate for a cool Asian fusion style restaurant. The kingfish was amazing. So we're the soft shell crab pancake rolls. Both outstanding. Our waiter told us to order both and dip the pancake roll into the kingfish marinade. Mind blown! Absolute taste sensation. The tuna tataki was also very good. The dumplings were a little disappointing. Very doughy which was a shame because the flavour of the filling was nice. If you're going to this place there are so many great things to eat, I'd suggest you can give the dumplings a miss. The other thing you should know is the tables are close together. Very close. So if you're going to have a break up conversation or something that requires a level of privacy, this isn't the place! We chatted to our neighbours about our different dishes so it was fine for us but it's not an intimate dining experience. The service is excellent. The waiters have tasted the food and are keen to recommend things. Our waiter chose well. Everything we loved he had recommended. This place should be on everyone's list if the dining experience sounds like your style.

Great place. Brilliant vibe. Totally Melbourne-sque. Hadn’t planned to have dinner here and granted, we were there early. But the floor staff found us a seat without a booking. Food was brilliant. Every dish was as surprising as the next. Stand outs were the pork bun, Nam Khao Tod (probably the dish of the night) and wowsers-the banana fritter! Short rib was great. There were a couple of mistakes by floor staff eg forgot to tell us how to prepare the short rib, small mistake on the bill and it took a while to get staffs attention when we walked in. But all overridden by the great food! And bill mistake was happily corrected. One of my favorites for sure ATM. Oh and the Q reader option to see pics of the menu is brilliant!

Nice subtle asiAn fusion flavours. Ordered the following dishes - all recommend to try as must haves!!
- chicken ribs: the coating is light and crunchy, good seasoning and not oily
- soft shell crab pancake: great flavour and plenty of crab!
- tuna tataki: the seared edges are the highlight
- betel leaf
- oysters
Enjoyed the coconut mojito but a bit too sweet for my liking
Staff are friendly and attentive, decor has a great atmosphere especially the cute animal themed menus!

Ok so first of all, I can 100% day the best meal I have had in a very long time. The service is incredible, they do have vegan options but I would like to see a few more. The tofu was so soft and delicate, the staff were so welcoming and made everything fun and personalised which is a massive plus for me. The dumplings were just awesome! The mocktails were delicious! I could not ask for much more ❤️❤️ thank you PJ :)

I’m a vegetarian and the waitress, a vegetarian herself, took extra care to ensure the dishes I ordered didn’t contain any oyster sauce, fish sauce, eggs or dried shrimp. The green papaya salad arrived first. What a way to start my meal; bursting with delicate levels of flavour. Thinking about the salad as I type, all I can say is that I’m immediately taken back to the sensation of flavours dancing in my mouth! The pan fried spinach and water chestnut dumplings arrived next. They were a little on the salty side for me, but full of flavour nonetheless. Dessert was the ginger creme brûlée - a delicious and generous portion that went down well! I’ll definitely be going back again to try some of the other vegetarian options on the menu. The green papaya salad was a sure winner; bet your bottom dollar that’s the first thing I’ll be ordering on my next visit!
Tummy Buddy
Had a great dining experience at Lucy Liu! Delicious Asian fusion dishes - recommend the turmeric cauliflower and the barramundi & scampi dumplings! The papaya salad was also good but not that refreshing as it is extremely hot! Go for a side of smashed cucumber instead if you are not a fan of hot chilli. The service was excellent and staff very friendly. Sat at the bar as they were really busy (went on a Saturday night) but the ambience was still great.

Great atmosphere, had to wait nearly an hour for a table but staff were great, seated at the bar to wait. Cocktails were great and great selection of drinks.

Food was exceptional! The pork was to die for and definitely for 2 people to share.

Staff were very prompt with service and acted very quickly.

Would definitely recommend.

Unfortunately the service was a major let down of this venue. The waiter essentially kicked us off the table after confirming they had another booking. We had not finished our food and still had half a glass of wine left.
We had the 7 course feed me menu. The starters were good but the mains were tasteless and the beef was tough and leathery.
Would not recomend. Felt a rushed dinner.
Mary Kyriacou
What an amazing place. The food the service the atmosphere everything about this place is fantastic, even the sign out the front.

Good amount of food for the price paid. Had international visitors here and they wanted to go back the next night that how much they enjoyed it.

If you want to go book in advanced well worth it.
Kyriacoum
Wow what an amazing place. The food the service the cocktails just everything about this place is fantastic even the sign outside. One meal was better than the other. The feed me menu is great enabling you to try a lot of different food and sharing. The size of the meals are a good size. Would highly recommend!!!
Meg Gro
Faultless food. The duck is a must. Yummy drinks. Great decor. Only criticism is being seated on the high chairs at the kitchen, although fun to watch the magic happen, is largely uncomfortably. Thanks for the great food- will be back!!!!!
Jill
Absolutely love this place. Every time we come, we always get the feed me option and always end up in a food coma. The soft shell crab pancake roll is to die for!! I would eat that every day if I could.

Atmosphere and bar staff was excellent. Decor and menu was very old school and should get updated. waitress was not interested in being there. Will come again for a drink on a day off

4.5/5
Very impressive feed! Kingfish, pork belly and chicken ribs were a real standout. Beef short rib main was a ripper and some of the best roti bread you will eat. Lamb shoulder was a little bit fatty but great flavors. Good service as well.
Jae Papalia
Managed to get a last minute booking for dinner tonight have been meaning to come for ages but it’s always so booked in advance. We had about 6 starter plates everything was so tasty! To name a few, the calamari, cauliflower, pork belly, kfc style chicken, eggplant and king fish. Had the lamb for main with the roti and steamed rice and OMG so good that roti was 10/10. Cocktails were fab and ambiance was good too. I would definitely come again

Took my partner here for his birthday! He was overly happy about the choice, as was I! The food was delicious; particularly the dumplings! The atmosphere and decor inside was perfect, and the staff were amazing! Super kind and helpful. On the pricier side, however you get what you pay for! Definitely will be back again very soon.

In line with the venue’s social setting, the menu is designed to share. To start we loved the Kingfish sashimi. The thick slices of very fresh king fish were served with green chilli, Thai basil, coconut foam and toasted coconut. The dish was notable for the quality of the fish and the interplay between the heat of the green chilli and the richness of the coconut cream. It was a simple but well executed dish.

Came here for dinner Wednesday night. Waitress and chef accommodated to our group having to be out by a particular time. We had variety of dishes. Asian greens, soft shell crab roll, various dumplings, Chinese donut desert. The sauces and spices used in every dish were amazing. Couldn’t fault them. Will be returning

Service: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Taste: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Ambiance: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Value: ⭐️⭐️

The service was exemplary. We ordered the five plates menu which was chef’s pick. I particularly enjoyed the pan roasted barramundi. The chargrilled beef was slightly overcooked and chewy. The other dishes were satisfactory - nothing special. A great place for a special lunch catchup.

Saw reviews on this place and it looked amazing. To be honest a key reason for going here was convenience to be close to Tennis Centre to see Michael McIntyre. Went down a lane and found it. Pretty basic. Internally fit out and decor was cool. Wine list wasn’t too bad. A lot of choices especially in $60-$70 band. We got Peking duck pancakes to start. Delicious. I then got the soft shell crab wraps that I enjoyed. BBQ pork buns were solid even though they were a bit chilli. The the pork spare rib came out. Delicious again. Creme Caramel to finish things off. Overall bill value was solid. Great overall experience. Deserves its five stars:)

Lucy Liu delivered overall very pleasant experience today. Most of the dishes are tasty, with a hint of spice, the strong taste of all starters opened our appetite.
Our favorite dish being soft shell crab jianbing pancake roll, very tasty! while the least favorite dish is Peking duck dumpling, neither the texture of the dumpling or the taste was right...

also very good service and vibe! Will come back again for other dishes..
Every time I come here the service is prompt, the staff are extremely friendly and super helpful with dietary requirements, the food is a modern twist on Asian cuisine - it is super consistent and so so tasty! I can’t wait the next time I come back every time to this super cool place! Well done!
Cindy
We came for a quick meal last Friday night before having to head off to an event. We managed to get a bar table for 2 right next to the kitchen.
The service was friendly and efficient with wait staff being very helpful on what meals to choose.
We had the salt and pepper chicken ribs with kewpie mayo, the Peking duck dumplings and the Korean crispy pork hock with DIY wraps. We thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. Note that the pork hock was A LOT of food for two people (technically we didn't need 2 sides!)
It is quite a loud but upbeat restaurant which is why I could only give it four stars. Regardless, make sure to book ahead of time as this place is very popular!
Angela Cao
Staff were great and were quick and prompt

Food came out within 10 minutes
With a few minutes in between each dish

The dishes were light and perfectly seasoned with a great Asian influence

Makes you want to come back for more!
My new favorite restaurant, been going through their menu and what I like so far:
Salt and pepper chicken ribs
Soft shell crab jianbin, so tasty!
Ocean trout salad, wow you've got to try it
Green papaya salad, perfect mix, not too spicy, however if you are not into fish sauce don't order it

Average and won't order again:
Peking duck dumplings, nothing special, the fillings are a bit dry
Drunken chicken, very average unless you never had this dish before, try the proper one at any Chinese restaurant

Can't wait to try out other dishes from their menu!
Lucky Star
Excellent food. Poached chicken and barramundi was amazing. Wine was good too. Good vegetarian selection. Nice setting as well. Would come back for sure.

Went to Lucy Lui last night for the first time due to a friends recommendation and wasn’t disappointed. The food and service was fantastic I recommend the salt and pepper chicken ribs as well as the szechuan duck! They were both amazing! The only down side was having to share a table as when we booked we were told we would have our own table. But apart from that I will be returning to taste the other items on the menu which we did not get to try!

We had an absolutely fantastic group dinner at Lucy Liu! It had been on my radar to try for years but I can safely say that it exceeded my expectations.

As a group of 8 we had to order either the 5 course or 7 course set menu, we went with 7 ($75pp) which honestly contained more food than I have ever gotten in a set menu before. We also had two dietary requirements - pescatarian and shellfish allergy - who were cared for very attentively. Service overall was top notch!

Our menu included (descriptions may not be exact as they do not appear to all be the same as on their current menu): kingfish sashimi cracker, cauliflower & seaweed salad, beef? dumplings, prawn & papaya salad, salt & pepper chicken ribs, lamb rendang curry w papadams, crispy skin barramundi w black bean sauce. Everything was delicious but my favourites were the sashimi cracker, cauliflower, rendang and barramundi. Safe to say we were completely stuffed when leaving!

Lucy Liu also have a magical ‘half strength’ cocktail section with, as a victim of the “Asian flush”, I absolutely loved!!!! Please can more restaurants do this??

All in all a fantastic dining experience in a super funky Melbourne venue (make sure you take the Oliver Lane entry for the best experience). Highly recommend for big groups, dietary requirements and lovers of modern Asian fusion food.

Lucy Liu impressed us big time. We loved everything we ordered. Not pictured were the two baos that were very good & the phenomenal duck pancakes. Absolutely a standout restaurant with a great atmosphere. We will be back next time we are in Melbourne

Don’t really eat asian Cuisine however this place really took my breath away the cocktails were fantastic the chicken was so tender it just melted in your mouth. Will definitely be back!!! ❤️❤️❤️
I Love Food
Dined for dinner last night. Rang around 2pm & only high communal tables available at 8.15pm. We ordered kingfish sashimi, tempura prawn betel leaves, fish cakes & salt & pepper chicken ribs. Food was tasty but SUPER EXPENSIVE for what you actually got. Those 4 small bites & taste plates cost us nearly $89! I ordered a coconut mojito ($18.50) & hubby ordered a beer ($10). Service was inattentive. Didn't enjoy the high communal tables as continually had staff knock into me as they walked past & some other diners, very frustrating & made the dining experience unpleasant!

“This is my go-to dish,” said my boss when the soft shell crab pancake roll was placed on our table. Our team was out to celebrate the end of yet another year and this was his captain’s pick of venue and dish. You could feel the collective weight of our high expectations hovering over our chopsticks.

I took a bite and it was the most heavenly soft shell crab I’ve ever tasted. The crispiness of the crab was tempered with the softness of the pancake. The sauce which brought it all together catapulted us to a euphoric high. I then sighed in relief that my boss had good taste and I didn’t have to fake my approval of the dish.

The other dishes of our “Lucy Choose” selection did not disappoint. We also had sashimi, glass noodles with calamari, beef wontons, salmon and grilled chicken with lettuce cups. Everything was amazing and the service was very quick and attentive too.

The place was busy but not overly busy. There were some seats at the bar which remained vacant to accomodate any walk-ins. I would definitely come here again.

The roti bread here is outstanding. It is something I dream about. The flavors of the food never disappoint. One of the best Asian restaurants in Melbourne. Large serves, with heaps of punch. This is one of my go to favourites

Can’t fault anything at Lucy Liu! From the knowledgable waiters, to the delicious food - I’ll be planning every CBD dinner here for the foreseeable future! Highlights were the betel leaf sashimi entree & tuna tataki with sesame crackers. Oh and the cocktails ;)

Lucy Liu is a pretty busy bar. It was very lively and crowded. Lucky we made a reservation. However, we had to wait a long time to get a table. We weren’t seated until we asked the waiter. So service was a bit of a letdown. We weren’t very hungry, so we ordered the small dishes.

Yellow Fin Tuna Tataki
Price: $22
Taste: 🌝🌝🌝🌝
It was a pleasant start of the meal. The tuna tataki was fresh, and the sauce added a nice flavour. The sesame crackers weren’t greasy and had a slight sweetness. Price was a bit high for the portion, though.

Siu Mai Prawn Dumpling
Price: $14
Taste: 🌝🌝🌝🌜
The siu mai were pretty good, but they were nothing special. They didn’t have as much oil as the ones you’ll find at Chinese restaurants.

Soft Shell Crab ‘Jianbing’ Pancake Roll
Price: $15
Taste: 🌝🌝🌜
The dish was quite a letdown. The filling didn’t contain much soft shelled crab, instead, it was filled with coriander. The coriander taste really overpowered the whole dish. The soft shell crab itself was tasty, but the coriander really ruined the dish.

Vietnamese Coffee Ice Cream
Price: $16
Taste: 🌝🌝🌝🌝🌝
Definitely the highlight of the meal! The fried donuts were very crispy, and were slightly sweet. When eaten with the ice cream, the texture became a bit softer, which was super tasty. The coffee flavour added a nice slight bitterness. Really loved this dish!

Overall, Lucy Liu was quite average for the price. It was nothing special, except for the dessert. I don’t think it’s worth the price. The ambience was lively and crowded, so it might not be ideal for meetings.

Great Service but the Food is So So.
Roti was deep fried (!) and the Jasmine rice was hard. The tempura veggies were great, very light and not oily but their famous pork hock meat was really dry. We also had the lamb and lentils and I felt that the flavours were toned down for the Western palate. Such a shame really as the staff are excellent and it's a nice space.

The food was tasty but didn’t blow my socks off. Kingfish and tuna betel leaf was nice and fresh while the calamari was very flavoursome. Peking duck dumplings and buns were only ok. Service was incredibly friendly throughout.

The quality of food is spectacular here and there is pretty much nothing you can complain about. I went as a group of three and we ordered the fish cakes, peking duck dumplings, korean fried chicken bun as small sides with one large plate of lamb shoulder which came with a serving of rice and roti. Everything was great! Taste, flavours and the satisfaction of every bite was worth it. The korean fried chicken bun was a standout for me and i would definitely go back to order two buns just for myself. The place is something you shouldn’t miss.. although don’t forget to make a reservation coz that’s just how they work - I guess the food and ambience makes it pretty good!!

Went for Friday night after work drinks and dinner. I had trouble choosing what to order so opted to let Lucy choose. The standout meals for me were the dumplings and the massaman curry

Lucy Liu is a trendy bar & restaurant in the city. It was very loud inside when we went for dinner with friends. I ordered the pan fried spinach & water chestnut dumplings and stir fried asian greens. The dumpling skin was thick & the sauce was extremely oily. The stir fried asian greens tasted okay but the price was quite expensive for $12. Service was attentive & friendly.

Delicious food with amazing flavours. We had a few dishes to shared and loved every last bite. We had the Peking duck dumplings, korean style crispy pork hock with apple kimchi salad and pancakes with some stir fried Asian greens.

If you’re looking for a place to be seen and somewhere that offers Asian fusion Lucy Liu is where it’s at. Really good food (not the best Asian fusion I have eaten) however food is of great quality and the atmosphere is pumping.

Warning- do not come here for a quiet dinner. DJs present on a Saturday night and exceptionally noisy

Least favorite dish was the beef cheek- was certainly better elsewhere

Absoloutley amazing food! For 3 people 5 dishes is ideal with a glass of🍷. Staff are lovely and great service as well. Will be back soon again, Lucy!

Hmmm not sure what to think of Lucy Liu. The food isn’t bad but seems overpriced for the same quality asian dumplings or food that you can get in Chinatown for half the price. The staff seemed very rushed to get you in and out also. An awkward moment is when I paid by credit card and one of the severs just stared when the tip section comes up. I didn’t feel the tip was justified to be honest and it was weird being watched. The decor and environment is very nice though.

We ordered Tuna tataki, tempura prawn bettel leaves, salt pepper chicken ribs and rendang with roti. Chicken ribs is the food of the day....so yummm... the tuna got surprise wasabi taste....
The Honest Glutton
Got the “Let Lucy Choose” 7 plates option as we were a group of 8 for $75pp.

Loved the starters. Only thing that saved me from leaving this place a 1 star.
Fish, chicken & corn fritter w/ sweet chili sauce was quite tasty and different.
Yellow fin tuna Tataki tasted refreshing - highlight of the dinner.

I’d say after this, the food got more disappointing.
Beef salad - mine came with a side of hair (ofc we requested my dish to be taken back) I received a complimentary tuna on sesame cracker as an apology. Apology accepted as it was tasty too.

Siu Mai prawn dumplings - very average. Probably better off avoiding it.

Salt & pepper chicken ribs were average again, missed the flavor mark. Just tasted like fried chicken.

We had a chicken curry dish which was boring as well. This time, it came with a crawling bug on its leaves. Had to get this one sent back too.

Salmon w/ black bean sauce had crispy skin and was cooked soft to the centre - I enjoyed this.

As an apology for the bug, we received complimentary dessert.

Banana fritter was average, you can find tastier at your local Vietnamese restaurant. The Vietnamese coffee ice cream w/ fried Chinese donut tasted like stale Chinese donut slathered in coconut milk??? If I had paid the full $16.50 for this dish, I would had been very upset.
The chocolate dulce de leche, the flavors did not go well.

The waiter was also very understanding and nice.
I have been hearing raving reviews about this restaurant. The reviews on Zomato have also been fantastic. So understandably I can’t wait to try it out. I must say everything that we ordered were absolutely delicious. If you have read my previous reviews you would have known that I don’t like coriander. But I managed to go through dinner without having to eat any (I picked them out, sorry). You booked marked this place then be sure to make a booking as I’ve tried walking in a few months ago and they told me that they are fully booked for the next month.

I went here for my birthday and there isn’t anything bad that i could say about this place.
Everything is just so so so good. The king fish was my favourite dish and you should definitely try it if you are a sashimi fan. Another favourite of mine is the pancake roll with soft shell crab!
Everything is THAT good!! Definitely recommended

4.5 ⭐️. Finally made it to Lucy Liu. Went with a few colleagues for dinner and it didn’t disappoint. The ventricular tablemats were interesting way to showcase the menu. We ordered a large array of cocktails and food. If you are coming to a place where it’s shared dishes then you need an army of people so you can sample everything. Highlights: the plates (entrees). Crispy pork buns! Soft shell crab! I think we ordered majority of the menu. Another great Asian fusion eatery. Lowlights: limited seating time.

We loved this place. We sat at the kitchen bar so you get to watch all the dishes being plated up which was fun. The staff were really friendly and helpful about the menu - our waiter suggested we were overordering and recommended other dishes so we could still try all the flavours we wanted. We shared soft shell crab, prawn dumplings, sticky pork belly and drunken chicken. Each dish was delicious and the flavours were perfectly balanced. It's pretty well priced too - we had a couple of drinks each and got away for just under 100. We'd come back for sure!
Flying Forward
Lucy Liu offers typically Melbournian Asian-fusion, with dishes inspired from Hong Kong, China, Korea, Thailand and Malaysia.
Execution is modern, contemporary and prices reflect this too, as mains are preeeety steep.
My Hong Kong friends are visiting and can take zero heat, so we try to opt for dishes with no chilli.

* Cantonese steamed blue cod fillet - a very common Chinese dish, the cod is juicy, firm and the flesh just flakes off in large chunks.
* Shortrib with Rendang Curry - love a slowroasted shortrib, and this is beautifully soft and fatty with a mildly sweet rendang curry sauce.
* Korean-style crispy pork hock - I guess the inspiration came from jokbal (braised pork hock), but done in a peking duck fashion with thin pancakes and hoisin.

The atmosphere is dim, with neon lights around and music absolutely thumping. I almost feel embarrased with my friend's mum looking a bit uncomfortable.
I guess the restaurant is targeting a certain crowd - young, hip, loves cocktails, has money to blow, and has travelled to Hong Kong once but only for a stopover (jk).

I'm a little torn about the restaurant. Cultural appropriation comes to mind, but this is Melbourne - a very multicultural hotspot. Sydney and Melbourne have been well known for Asian-fusion for decades and there's no sign of it slowing down.

For me though, most of the dishes aren't unique enough to warrant the high prices, because I feel like I can get a similar dish in a more traditional restaurant.

Returned to Lucy Liu for my last business trip, a great ‘go to’ that never disappoints. We were seated at the kitchen-side bench, and the restaurant was full and busy on a cold, wet Monday night. The food was incredible as always. My colleague had not been before so left the ordering up to her as I knew everything would be fantastic. Our view of the chefs and kitchen made for a great night, being able to see the dishes going out helped us to choose whatever we liked the look of from the pass. A great night out experiencing one of Melbourne’s faves.

Excellent food— every dish we ordered was full of flavour and packed a punch. Unfortunately, service was a bit of a let down. It was a busy Friday night so we were happy to wait for a table- ended up with bar stools. One of our party of three had a problem with back pain and even though we requested a proper table and there was a proper table that had remained free for 30-45mins after we requested, we were told this wouldn’t be possible. Soon after we noted another party of three who came after us were shown to this table.

Still a favourite after many years and still as popular as ever. This place was buzzing on a Friday night which sometimes means having to sit really close to the people at the table next to you. Great cocktails and service always on point. Had the 5 plate share option which was delicious as always . Finished off with the Vietnamese Coffee ice cream with fried Chinese donuts which was good but certainly not the best dessert I had... should have gone with the banana fritters

This was my second visit, I really enjoyed it the first time I was here, a couple of months ago. This time I thought it was average. We tried:

Rare breed sticky pork belly and Betel leaves– bland, requires more flavour

King Fish Sashimi – amazing flavours
- loved
Fried Asian greens- loved, very fresh and best I have probably had at any restaurant. More garlic please

Ginger crème brulee – loved intensity and ginger flavour

Banana fritters with ice cream - : wished the bananas can be fried to more crispy, was chewy, didn’t love
Got_2_lunch
This was my second time visiting for lunch and was impressed again. Vietnamese pork salad from the special menu was fresh and zingy. Short rib rendang was sweet, rich and super tender. Pickles were a nice addition. Loses a star for being pretty expensive and a really cramped venue.

Had a horrible experience here tonight.

We made a booking for a birthday for 930pm, which was late enough and the only time available, we weren’t shown to a table until 950.

We had lovely service and food through the night with very attentive service.

Once we were finished our meals, we asked for our bill. This isn’t our first time to Lucy Luis and in the past we have been told we couldn’t split bills, however tonight they said they could do this. We told them we would need some time still to sort out what we owe.

We were asked 3 times if we were ready to pay although we said we would call them, and on the third ask the waiter whose name was Vince, said he would help us with splitting it even though we said we still needed time.

There was a bit of confusion with splitting the bill and this became too much for Vince as he slammed his hand on the table of 7 women and yelled “LISTEN. I’m about to lose my sh*t. You owe me -” and at this point we all just sat there shocked. We just paid the rest all together and wanted to get out of there as soon as possible.

I am a food blogger, have worked many years as a waiter, in the hospitality industry and currently in an industry that requires patience and understanding with its guests. This sort of behaviour is unacceptable in any occasion and I can’t believe someone with such a short fuse can work in such a highly rated Melbourne restuarant.

When we brought up the incident with the manager, he seemed to be aware of this sort of behaviour from the employee. I don’t recall any apology and not sure if I will ever be back.

My colleagues and I went here for lunch and really enjoyed our experience. The food is good and the cocktails are great. The ambience is nice and the restaurant itself is very cool. The only negative for me was the price, I didn't feel like it was worth it for the quantity of food we had.

Jian Bing: Good really loved the texture and flavour combination

Kingfish Sashimi: felt it was not as fresh as it should be. The fish was warm

Crispy Pork Belly Bun: crispy pork belly and good filling to bun ratio

Barramundi and Scampi Dumpling: skip this. Too salty and it was mushy

Slow roasted lamb shoulder: lamb was slightly over cooked. Which was fine. Had to ask for extra Dahl. Roti was really good.

Ginger creme brûlée: disk on top was a little thicker. Nice flavours

Banana Fitters with Ice Cream: wished the bananas can be fried to more crispy. But was good regardless.
