Review Bamboo House Chinese Restaurant - Melbourne

Julian Ward
We went to Bamboo House because a friend recommended us to go and I have to say that the food and service was amazing Oysters, fish and duck was all sensational The only disappointment was we were too full to try the lamb which apparently is fantastic as well. Looks like we will have to come back again and try that next time. Thank you for looking after us Jimmy and Ann.

Unbelievable great food, Unbelievable the best service I've ever had, 3 times now I've been here over 4 years ever time we come to Melbourne. We were in the best room in the restaurant, just brilliant đź‘Ź đź‘Ś

Great food. Not too sweet or salty. Balance of flavour was perfect. Seafood wasn’t over cooked. Star of the evening definitely Peking duck.
Koen Alexander
Went here for lunch with colleagues to celebrate some wins. Was really impressed with the banquet.
Alex P.B
They were very accommodating for our dietary requirements as my mum wouldn't eat fish and pork and duck. So we had the banquet menu and had some really good food. The service was really good as well.

The peking duck was amazing!! Would definitely visit again if I come to Melbourneđź‘Ťđź‘Ť

Ann is a Superstar, leading a fantastic team serving up the best Chinese food in Melbourne. Leans toward more of a western style which is not everyone's preference but certainly is ours and no one does it better than the team at Bamboo House.

Good Cantonese food in a upscaled environment. Recommend going for the garlic king prawns and steamed fish. Last but not least, we really like their Peking duck

Delicious meal. Friendly service and decent value for money. Loved the cucumber appetizer and the egg plant dish. Can recommend this place for a pleasant chinese meal.

The food was good, just to get that out of the way!! Service was negligible, very much forced , no pleasantries , disappointing, after so many good reviews. The bad experience started with a bad table , with many vacant tables. We assumed that would be reserved so didn’t bother too much after being shot down by the waiting staff that they are fully booked. Three groups who came after us, of the same number of people all of them got better tables from half a dozen empty tables to choose from. As I said in the beginning, the food was good. But with the price tag, there are much better options around. I’ll give it a skip.

It was OK. Service is efficient and food is good. However, prices are over the top. As it's Licenced, wine prices are expensive too. You can get similar or better food and service for much less in Chinatown.

Absolutely amazing place service was impeccable the food was delicious absolutely delicious would highly recommend this restaurant

Great service and delicious food. Definitely recommend

Food is over priced for what you get. Don't might paying high prices for great food. But it wasn't. Wish I had looked around a bit more at the multitude of restaurants, before choosing this one. Lucky I am not a local.

First time here and close by where we were staying and food was great and service very good and staff very accommodating and prompt. Will definitely be back there if in area.
Robert Lymer
Very nice food. Had Lemon Chicken & Beef with seasoned Veges, with a large fried rice. Could not fault any of it, was delicious and will be back for sure.

Amazing food, fantastic service. I let them know I had to be at the theatre in an hour and a half and the service was speedy and exactly everything that I ordered. Amazing staff.

5 of us had lunch . We ordered the lunch meeting banquet menu . The tables had crisp table cloths and were spaced well . Food was portioned and plated individually which was nice . I think it’s the traditional silver service . Used Plates taken away after each course . All the dishes taste great . Salt and pepper calamari , San Choy bau , Peking duck , king prawns , eye fillet steak with Cantonese sauce , fried rice and a fantastic crispy fried battered banana with ice cream . It was a luxury to have this service and food was delivered at the right pace for an unhurried lunch . We were there from 1 pm. to 4.30 pm. Restaurant is fully licensed and we ordered wine by the glass . Tea is complimentary. Will be back again for unhurried good service and the food .

Came here for a work lunch, quiet enough to have a group meeting for 10ppl. Food was delicious, but catered towards non-Chinese diners so don’t expect anything traditional. Absolute standout was the Peking duck, the skin was crispy and golden brown, and the meat was succulent. Delicious, wish I could have had more!

I’ve been a loyal bamboo house customer for about 15 years. Last night was my first time back for about a year... (kids happened). I hyped up the Peking duck to my girlfriends (also mums - lol u know how hard it is for us all to get out?) and was really looking forward to it. We ordered two ducks and the first was chewy and luke warm. The second was hot but definitely no where near as good as I remember. The duck meat ratio in each wrapper was overwhelming. The service was down right rude and we got the hand gesture (“don’t bother me, I’m busy” kind of gesture) multiple times - when asking for a menu, when asking to order... It wasn’t just the one waiter either. We got served attitude from multiple waiters. Disappointing service. And a steep bill to pay at the end. won’t be coming back. You’ve lost me bamboo house.

Haven’t been to this place for ages! I was told to order the Peking duck and lobster omelette to give a go and I did! Definitely one of the best Peking duck in the city. The lobster omelette is a must to try. We’ve ordered more food but I was too hungry to take the photos. Most customers have been coming here for years. Service was fantastic. They’ve got good wine selections. Highly recommend to book. Perfect for birthday party or any family’s lunch or dinner. Enjoy :)

Food was great and presented well but the lower star rating is because it did not match up to the price tag. I could get the same thing with same great taste and bigger portions at a cheaper place. The expensive pricing was mainly for the service, atmosphere and presentation. I wouldn't recommend this place if you grew up on Chinese food, we were celebrating a special occasion but still felt that it was not worth it.

Went here with my mum before a show and it definately didn't dissapoint. I ordered the lemon chicken and my mum ordered the sizzling beef with vegetables. Both dishes arrived within 10 minutes of ordering and were cooked perfectly.<br/>The staff were also very accommdating and the price was reasonable for the serving sizes.<br/><br/>Would definately recommend visiting this hidden gem.

We had pre booked to come here but we didn’t really have too... inside the restaurant is average maybe abit tired and the service was ok/quiet not much was said. Gave us a drinks menu we just got a bottle of still water and then waited for the food menu.<br/>We ordered:<br/>Crispy Won ton-average normal won ton<br/>House special: lamb cutlets... it was tender but that is about all... quite bland<br/>Trio of dim sim- they were fine<br/>(All this came out pretty quickly after ordering...)<br/>Garlic prawns- this whole dish had a very shiny coating on the food didn’t enjoy it<br/>Fried rice - very average tasting

Very friendly staff and the atmosphere was great. Great interior of this place and comfy! For starters we had chicken and mushroom soup. Was yum but I would have preferred it without peas. It’s quite a different taste with peas. Then we had the three dumplings which as prawn scallops and fish which was so tasty and xiao Long bao which is pork dumplings and that was yum as well. Didn’t try the sauces with it. I normally just add soy sauce. Had the combination noodles to be honest it wasn’t the best combination noodles I’ve had but still tasty. Prawns were massive and so delicious. The beef came out with a candle which got me so excited and was very yummy. A little spicy for me at times but still great. The steamed fish fillets were not great. It was bland and looked unappealing and couldn’t taste the soy sauce it was watered down so much and the ginger was just fresh on the top and didn’t mix into the fish for flavour. Fried rice is always good. Overall I would rate: friendliness 5, interior 4.5 and food 3.5 giving it a 4.3 which rounds to a 4.

Bamboo house was not a disappointment! I love the traditional chinese restaurant atmosphere of this place and the service was fantastic.<br/>The prawn cutlets and pork dumplings in chicken broth were absolutely delicious. The dumplings were so juicy and the broth was so comforting and warming.<br/>We couldn't go past trying their Peking duck, we got half. It was definitely some of the best Peking duck I had ever had, the best in cbd. Was happy to see we had 4 decent sized pieces ( duck wrapped in pancakes with cucumber and hoisin sauce). It was very delicious and definitely recommend not skipping on the duck. We also got the Cantonese eye fillet and Chinese broccoli, both were great but<br/>I've had better than both and for cheaper elsewhere. I think it's a little overpriced but I was quite pleasantly surprised with the bill of $180 for two seeing as we had had 3 drinks each. Overall keen to go back again.

Refined, delicious food and easy to see why Bamboo House is an institution. Whilst a little tired inside, overall it is leaning towards a fine dining experience. All food was excellent with the exception of salt and pepper calamari which was tough and barely edible. We were never asked at any point in the meal how the food was, nor when paying the bill. The fish in sweet and sour sauce was particularly excellent and I loved the fried rice - not greasy at all. Worth the price, go and enjoy.
MrCreosote
I would very rarely give a 5 star review, but our visit to Bamboo House was worth it! Let me get this out of the way; it is expensive, make no mistake, this is not a budget restaurant! But: it was good, and I would happily pay to do it again. We ordered with the help of the waiter, had a selection of dumplings for entree, a whole Peking Duck & Dry Fried Beef Strips for mains + some greens. Everything was very good. Even the ever fussy 14 yo did not utter the slightest of complaints and rated everything a “10”, which is pretty much what everything deserved. The service was very good and everything was clean. The decor, well I really couldn’t give a stuff about the decor, if the food and service is that good you could paint it bright orange with lime green highlights for all I care!

This restaurant has been around for long time but have managed to keep it on the down low. They are on the high end of Chinese food restaurant, the kind where they change your plate after every dish. Food are excellent especially their dry fried beef and Peking duck. The beef is very addictive and unique. Everything else is excellent but very pricey.

We came here for our annual team lunch on the hottest day so far this summer. Fortunately the aircon was pumping and we were none the wiser of the furnace that was outside. We come here every year at about this time and came along with a regular patron so we’re fussed over a little more that usual perhaps. <br/><br/>I couldn’t eat all that was on offer due to dietary requirements but certainly enjoyed the chicken san choi ban, fried rice, calamari and vegetarian spring rolls. The others partook in Peking duck and all raved about it so that’s a good sign.<br/><br/>I also enjoyed sparkling wine which was served beautifully cold and crisp. I look forward to our annual visit here. Good reliable friendly service.<br/><br/>KD
Split The Bill
We come here every year for my colleagues birthday...and order pretty much the same things. <br/>We always have the very typical fare of fried rice, sweet and sour pork, honey chicken and a green vegie to share.<br/>Always great service for what I would describe as a fancy Chinese meal with real old school service as well.<br/>

Bamboo house is the absolute favourite, my old man has been going here for 30+ years<br/><br/>Myself for 10+ years<br/><br/>Can get a little noisy and may look a little outdated to anyone not familiar - dont let that deter you, the absolute best Oysters (chilli and blackbean!!) and Peking Duck anywhere, staff are absolutely fantastic and the whole experience is just 5/5
Kiss And Eat Up
Amazing dining experience with the service to match. The pork dumplings were heavenly filled parcels with juicy tender pork. The duck pancakes were succulent, filled with moist duck pieces -each pancake perfectly folded by waitstaff. Crispy egg noodles stir fried with tender chicken & vegetables - such a simple dish cooked & presented beautifully. Great wines priced by the glass . It is very obvious upon entering this beautifully appointed restaurant that the chef takes a lot of pride in the food they serve their customers. Cantonese food at its very best !

Food: <br/>- Hot and sour soup: I'm usually a big fan of this dish but I was really disappointed with this one. I feel like the taste is not as strong as the authentic version. <br/>- Pork ribs in Chinese vinegar sauce: another letdown because again the flavour is really bland for my personal taste. Although it's vinegar sauce, all I can taste is sweet, sweet and sweet. <br/>- Mapo tofu: again, very bland, not spicy at all. Real shame for a Sichuan dish. <br/>- Steamed duck and Chinese mushroom: another bland sauce but at least the duck was well-reasoned so that overall it wasn't so bad<br/>- I do feel like Bamboo House reduces the flavour intensity in all dishes a lot more than other restaurants. The food is so westernized here. Personally, I prefer the authentic Chinese food with stronger flavour so unfortunately this wasn't a pleasant experience. <br/>Price: low $$$ but so not worth it due to bad experience.<br/>Service: prompt, attentive but I wouldn't say they were as friendly as I anticipated. <br/>Deco: modern design, simply and overall quite pleasant. <br/>1.5/5 for the service and the deco.

Everything was so delicious especially the San Choy Bao and Crispy Duck pancakes. Yum! The service was fantastic, we mentioned we had Aladdin straight after dinner so they were very quick with our meals and didn't compromise on anything. Definitely want to come back and try more.

Got half a duck, duck was cold, dry like it was sitting there and they hardly put any spring onion and cucumber. Pancakes were cold too. Maybe having a whole duck its more fresh.I been to other duck places and food was hot and they give you everything to make your own pancakes.we asked 3 times for chilli oil for our tasteless fried rice and no one came.ordered 2 drinks and the first drink came and mine came 5 mins later. How hard is it to to pour champagne .we ended up getting the rice taken off the bill but won't bothered coming here again. Poor customer service

This place has that old school Chinese restaurant charm. White table cloths, round tables and a menu full of all your favourite dishes. Impeccable Chinese food, one of the best in Melbourne.
Amant De La Nourriture
Always a wonderful experience here. Have both dined here for a function and with family, always enjoyable. Owner is absolutely lovely, and theres great customer service. Never a negative experience

Classy restaurant that provides great customer service. The staff is friendly and I must say the best peking duck in Melbourne! Enjoy a relax and quiet dinner experience is highly recommended to come here.
Duongcool1997
Pricey, not even that worth for $80/whole duck<br/>But if the duck was $60 then its would be reasonable<br/>The service is good and the restaurant looking nice so i gonna leave 3.5* here

Absolutely loved it! I finally have a favourite Chinese restaurant! <br/>We had plenty of food so perhaps it'll make your choice about easier;)<br/>So what me and my boyfriend loved was their San choi bao. Just the right amount of everything. <br/>Peking duck itself was really crispy and flavoursome, however, pancakes were a bit of a let down. <br/>Bbq pork ribs was a nice entree to start with. <br/>Beef eye fillet potstickers and xia long bao were absolutely amazing! Not too hot so you burn your mouth eating it and than can't taste anything after. Just very very nice!<br/>Then we ordered a bit of satay beef which was my least favourite dish because onions weren't cooked at all and cut in big chunks. Probably that's the way it should be but I'm not a big fan. <br/>Special fried rice was ok. <br/>Overall was really rally pleased with the dinner. Amazing service and good variety of wines

🙋🏽‍♂️🙋🏽We had one of the set menus ("Banquet Degustation") 🍚and we thought that it was really good. 👍🏽Fantastic quality of food, great flavours. Contemporary presentation of traditional dishes. 🍚🍥🍙🍜Definitely recommended. <br/>Very attentive and friendly staff as well. 👨‍🍳🌸

The lamb cutlet was amazing, very well cooked with crunchy bread crumb coating. The shanghai marinated fish was a let down, the fish was a bit too fishy and the flavour is not very authentic but overall it is a good place to go.

A bit on the pricy side but still a great restaurant with very delicious Chinese food. Peking duck is amazing every time. Service was great 10/10 and meal was excellent

Love this place! I think it has the best pecking duck! Dumplings are yum, food is of good quality! Great and friendly staff! Highly recommend!!!

Came here for a birthday and they really delivered. The waitress was one funny lady and provided bonus entertainment. They made sure we were all comfortable and even brought out a birthday ice cream cake with candle to celebrate which was nice of them. Good touch. <br/><br/>While I can highly praise their service their food was a bit subpar as far as Chinese food goes. It really tasted like a westernised version of Chinese food which isn't necessarily bad thing (judging by how popular the place was) but not really what I had imagined. <br/><br/>We had a wide selection of dishes ... Probably 12 all up of which none were particularly spectacular. Their Peking duck pancakes were not to be faulted though. <br/><br/>Would I come back? Probably for birthdays as they are well suited to large groups but not for the food.
John Gee
Probably the best Chinese offering I have been to in Melbourne.<br/><br/>The hardest choice is what to order, however the Peking Duck, Salt and Pepper Calamari, Scallops and Dumplings are hard to pass by.<br/><br/>Will continue returning here, fabulous place.

Extremely disappointed by our experience at Bamboo House, especially after the great reviews that lead to us choosing it for a big group dinner for 18 people.<br/><br/>The wait staff were quite rude and dismissive when we asked for sauces or chilli.<br/><br/>But worst of all was the management strictly trying to enforce a one main, one entree person that they stipulated as one of their preferences for large groups of this size. We ordered 17 mains and 16 entrees, about 10-15 drinks and a dessert but they still sent the head manager over to us to try force us to pay for an extra main and two entrees for the 18 people. With a table bill of $800 that that was disgraceful! <br/><br/>The food was average to good at best, so will never return to this restaurant again due to the overall unpleasant experience. There are about 100 better options in Melbourne's China town!

I enjoyed a group lunch, mid-week, at Bamboo House Chinese Restaurant.   The courses were varied and the food was wonderful - both taste and presentation.  The Peking Duck was top class.   I'm not a fried banana fan but they did this dish very well with icecream and caramel.   There was not a dish that I could negatively criticise.   Service was very efficient and I hardly noticed that dishes were appearing and plates were being cleared away and replaced but the staff were a bit mechanical - don't expect service with a smile.
EK
My favourite Chinese restaurant in Melbourne. My top 2 dishes are Peking duck and the dumplings. The tables are set with white tablecloths so it's got a formal yet comfortable atmosphere. Perfect for a family birthday celebration. How soon can I get back to Bamboo House?!

Service was amazing at the start of our meal but seemed to get worse as the night went on. Good food but for the price and reputation of being one of the better Chinese restaurants could be better.

“Craving some good quality Tea smoked duck with a side of Peking duck, we decided to go somewhere new. Bamboo house is a restaurant that has been around for years. Only hearing good things, it met expectations! Tasty, crispy, meaty Peking duck and nicely smoked tea duck.”. Name – Bamboo House

Was taken here by client. Lee introduced me to Quanjude. We went here as Quanjude was closed. Quality of food was solid. Peking duck good, however not in Quanjude league;). There is something to be said about restaurants that let them make it yourself:)

...hmmm...I am reluctant to write a review for this for 2 reasons; it is my 1st time here and my expectations in this genre of food (banquet styled Cantonese cuisine) is a little bit higher. Many years working in Asia with high exposure to big Chinese banquet cuisine really does make me a snob in this area. But here goes. <br/><br/>For melbourne standard, this is a good place as there are simply not many around worth mentioning. Other than flower drum, all others have been a disappointment to me to the level that I have stop trying. <br/><br/>Peking duck. This is a hard dish tht requires skills and attention to details. Other than a great sweet hoi sin sauce, The duck needs to have the right texture and more importantly, a balanced meat/skin ration/scallion ratio. Credit to Bamboo, the skin wrap and the hoi sin sauce is good. But the carving of the duck, was simply not good enough. ..too much meat, irregular size scallion, inconsistent filling...<br/><br/>This may not be a problem for most, maybe even good...but to my snobby discerning tongue, it's a disaster. Sorry Bamboo.<br/><br/>If anyone know of a good Chinese banquet place...please put your comment in. I simply have no faith to doing anymore restaurants of this genre in Melbourne ever again.
LoveFOOD Hate BADservice ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ
There are 7 of us and we ordered about 5 main dishes. Food was excellent - juicy Peking duck, chunky sweet and sour pork, chilli prawns, tou fu, veg and fried rice and steamed rice. Just the right amount of food. One of the best service from a Chinese restaurant. Will be back
Richard
This is one of the better Cantonese restaurants in Chinatown. The food is refined and well presented and generally not as overpowered by sauces as you find in some Cantonese cooking. The prices reflect the more upmarket offerings but this is a good option.

Good food, ok service. Had dinner here last Friday in a group of 9. We had the set menu while some did order a la carte. The food was great - loved the calamari, spring roles were ok and fried banana was interesting. It took a while to get the attention though but once ordered the food didn't take long to come.

Was brought here for my birthday. The food was great and the Peking duck doesn't disappoint. We were sat out of the main dining area which was a bit to quiet for my liking. The decor is a little dated but the service was propt. A pretty good casual Chinese restaurant.
Helen.vassiliadis
Extremely disappointing! On arrival we were greeted without a smile and no welcome. Next we were escorted to a table just outside the toilets. As we were about to sit down we all noticed chunks of food predominately what looked like chicken, all over the floor within our seating area. My adult daughters and myself could not find a clean spot to rest our handbags on the floor. I asked for the waitress and quietly showed her the food all over the floor. She expressed annoyance and asked me to wait until another table was available. We were happy to wait but the head waiter kept staring at us in annoyance. It was at this point that l should've made a decision to leave this restaurant. Once seated elsewhere, we waited for the menus but we were not given the banquet menu to look at. When we were ready to order it appeared we were forgotten or ignored. We tried to catch the attention of what appeared the head waiter and he rudely raised his finger at my adult son and stated in a rude tone 'just wait a minute'. Again a missed opportunity to leave. I didn't make the decision to leave because my husband and l were hosting our adult children to dinner. Throughout the whole evening The staff were emotionless and disengaged with patrons. The food was minimal and terribly overpriced for the quality. As soon as final seating a of patrons left, the staff started stripping the vacated tables leaving them bare (a hint for us to start leaving). We made this special trip into the city to enjoy it and not go home early. We relied on urban spoon reviews but experienced the opposite. I will never dine in the city again, at least our suburban restaurants have a real interest to keep our patronage and listen when we are friendly critics. Perhaps people's dinning standards have dropped. I will only rely on word of mouth from now on.
Hungry_One
$90 for two main dishes and a fried rice of less than average quality. Never again.

Best Peking Duck. This is my favourite Chinese restaurant for its peking duck, pot stickers and sesame puffs. Always a special place to come to for special occasions.<br/>We do miss Robert though ....
Kenlow87
Terrible!. Went to the restaurant today and ordered a whole Peking duck. The duck served was not done the usual Peking duck style - thick duck meat together with the skin was wrapped and rolled. Not sure if this is their style but this is definitely not the original Peking duck style I know! The duck was also tasteless. Avoid this reataurant at all cost. They do not know what they are serving and what they serve is not chinese food!

This one was filled with duck meat too and the meat was really succulent. The sauce..

Bamboo House is amazing. Every dish was impeccable, as was the service and decor. The entire meal with rice and a glass of wine was only just over $100 - what a bargain. Go there.

A range of different Chinese restaurants, take-away outlets and other oriental cuisine line the extended walkways that make up Chinatown in Melbourne. Often you find yourself  bewildered by the choice as you make your way down Little Bourke Street. Some of the premises are presumably serving totally inedible MSG, while others may delight your taste-buds all night long. With the external facades and  menus all of  a similar nature, it could prove to be a game of luck landing one of the better choices. Either way, as a good-food navigator, I have a duty of care to my readers to send them in the direction of where I believe they will enjoy themselves. Today’s chom spot is Bamboo House, located at 47 Little Bourke Street, which is about half way between Exhibition and Spring Streets. This house began operations in 1984, offering a large variety of northern Chinese dishes in a comfortable setting. Trading successfully for over 25 years, there is much to love about Bamboo House and it’s exce

The steamed buns are fresh, soft and sweet - and they are served with hoisin sauce and shredded spring onion. The meat is beautiful - tender and sweet, not too fatty at all, and with a gentle smoked flavour. You take a bite and you're rewarded with unctuous meat, pillowy bread and sweet hoisin. The combination is amazing.
Let Me Feed You
The menu is divided into Sichuan and Peking style dishes from the corresponding provinces in China, which made a pleasant change from all the Cantonese that dominates Little Bourke. First up we each had a soup, M had the wonton, and the rest of us had the crab and shark fin. The shark fin, if you've never had it before, is sort of like cartilage, and is shaved into thin, translucent strips and ha

Whilst Bamboo House is already a very popular restaurant for dumplings, the wedding banquet experience has definitely sparked an interest in me to better experience their menu. Needless to say, J and I will certainly be back for more.

We’re very happy to report that Bamboo House is still a great Chinese restaurant. We’ll be back for the Tea Smoked Duck (served in steamed buns with hoi sin sauce and spring onion) and the Scallops soon! We wish Robert (and Alex) all the best for whatever the future brings – they have certainly earned some time off after 22 years in the business.

Far near the ends of Chinatown, you will find one of the restaurants whose food and also service has been recognised by many food critics. The restaurant's interior is formal, yet comfortable and few faults can really be found with service. The seafood birds nest is a highlight of the experience, the crunchy and crumbly texture of the egg noodle is good, whilst the seafood was cooked well and vegetables retaining their crunch. It was also good to see they had used fresh prawns rather than the frozen prawns whose texture is stringy and slightly opaque. Renowned for its Sichuan Tea Smoked Duck, it is served with some buns and sauce similar to that served with Peking Duck along with thinly cut spring onions. Although the duck is cooked well, it was hard to taste or smell any hint of tea, served alongside the strong sweet taste of the sauce, the tea was completely lost and tasted very similar to Peking

With its dark interior, mirrored bar and waiters in bow ties, Bamboo House does old school proud. Perhaps even better than Flower Drum. Patronised by middle aged business men (the younger and Asian populace tend to favour Shark Fin Inn just over the road), the restaurant is more a treat than a regular weeknight dinner stop. Especially if you come for their specialty, duck.<br/>

I have been a regular client of Bamboo House since it opened under the deft hand of Alex Tsang and his partner Robert- together they brought the delights of Shanghai Cuisine to Melbourne giving it personal touch.<br/>The design of the dining rooms remain as fesh today they originally were-showing that good design has longevity.<br/><br/>The food ranges from very good to fantastic and the staff always happy to help. The 'pot stcker dumplings' are superb as is the. 'Tea Smoked <br/>Duck' and hand pulled noodles.<br/><br/>I always ask the dining room manager and partner to help with suggestions as to what is fresh and good today - the fish and scallops, scampi and dry pulled beek.<br/><br/>Sometimes people complain that the food is. Too traditional which to put succinctly is crap.<br/><br/>As far as I am concerned this is the best value in town and the wine is petty good as well.<br/><br/>Sigmund Jorgensen OAM

Was hoping for much more. Came here after reading the reviews. Service was a bit poor compared to other establishments in Melbourne. Ordered the duck pancakes and they were great. However, ordered a beef dish and a noodle dish for mains and they weren't nice at all. Bit disappointed considering it's by no means a cheap restaurant. The noddles weren't very nice at all and did not have much meat or veges and the beef was to sweet, chewy and not worth $32. Perhaps we ordered the wrong mains, but I preferred the cheaper Chinese places in Melbourne where the food is just as good. All up for the duck, noddles, beef, 2 wines and a gin and tonic it was $140. Not worth it in my opinion for chinese. If I did return would just get the duck.

Excellent service from our waiter Jimmy, very attentive, also Andy was excellent.<br/>We enjoyed our food especially the combination pan fried noodles, we will be back

Went for a banquet with a group of friends. The tea smoked duck was amazing, as were the xiao long bao. The staff and friendly and attentive.

Best Chinese in Melbourne. Food is amazing and the best Peking Duck in town. The warm welcome and service from Ann and the staff completes the experience. Would recommend to anyone.

Would love to be able to appropriately review based on things consumed but hey , we were ignored when we sat down as the staff saw more fit to wipe down tables around us during a quiet time than take our order. When we got up to leave they didn't ask why just opened the door for us like they were happy we were leaving. Confusing.
Steven
Dear manager Ann, thank you for your excellent services . Will come back soon !!

Best Chinese Restaurant in Melbourne. Hands down best Chinese Restaurant in Melbourne. Peking Duck, Squid and Dumplings - Best Available ANYWHERE. Service Fantastic. If in town do not miss a visit to this Melbourne Institution.

A lovely night out. We had a wonderful night and received excellent service from both of the staff serving us. The salt and pepper squid was worth coming back for alone. We also thoroughly enjoyed the lamb cutlet entree - so tender. Both mains were great, szechuan chilli chicken and mandarin pork ribs. Were also surprised that a bottle of Shaw and Smith was quite reasonable compared to Canberra prices. Thanks so much!

Our start to the night was disappointing with the welcome of a lady waitress who at her very best was extremely rude. She was unhappy about us bringing a pram and not informing her even though we did so when we booked over the phone. When trying to put our infant to sleep she had requested my wife to take the baby into the toilet as he was too noisy. The Peking duck did not live up to all the hype. The San choi bow was average. Calamari too oily. Sichuan prawn and eggplant was too sweet. However the chicken with seasonal vegetables was good. The layout of the restaurant was cumbersome. Overall not a good experience.

Superb. We have been going to bamboo house since I was a small child and it has always been my favourite restaurant but we havent been since Robert and Alex left about 4 years ago, as we had heard rumors it was not as good as it once was. The rumors were wrong. The food and service were as impeccable as ever. We love the spring onion pancakes, San choi bao, Szechuan chilli prawns are to die for and of course the peaking duck. The best Chinese food in Victoria and a must try - it won't dissapoint.

Terrible rude experience. Booked online for this restaurant using the Urban Spoon app, and received a confirmation email of our 6.30 reservation. Upon arrival they did not appear to have our reservation. I explained we had booked online and showed the confirmation email, at which point they told us they were no longer taking bookings from Urban Spoon and had told them so a few days before. We asked if they could squeeze us in (given there was only 2 of us), but they rudely told us that it was Urban Spoon's fault, and therefore not their problem!<br/>The food here was once good, and for all I know it still maybe, but with disgusting service like that I'll never return to find out.

Be careful!. I have had many many great meals at Bamboo House: the Peking duck is fantastic and all the meals 'excellent'. The service has always been good...until yesterday when there was a significant overcharge made on the bill. Our group was five 'middle aged' guys who ate and drank generously and one wonders if we made an easy target!<br/><br/>The bill was corrected with apologies but still...

Not as good as i was expected...took a while for the meal to come out
Nice
We had a wonderful experience at Bamboo House. The staff were beyond exceptional offering friendly and attentive service. The dumplings are the best in Melbourne, so fresh and cooked to perfection. The Peking duck was also sensational! We can't wait to go back again soon. Thanks Bamboo House for a wonderful evening! 5 star food and 5 star service.

Delicious, and amazing service. Arrived here for dinner with a group of 6 on a Saturday night - without a booking. We were in the are so we thought it was worth a try. Not only did they go out of their way to find room for us, we had some of the most delicious food I've had in a long time. The scallops were fantastic, and it was some of the best peking duck I've ever had. The waiters also were quick and incredibly attentive, despite being rushed off their feet on a busy night. I would go back in a heartbeat.

Must try - true Chinese cuisine with impeccable service. Bamboo House - a warm and inviting place to get together for business, casual meetings with friends and families, or work functions. Quality dining for all walks of life, all ages, all ethnicities - offering sumptuous authentic Chinese cuisine with exceptional quality at a reasonable price. Friendly and knowledgeable staff, great ambience.<br/> <br/>This is the place to be. The staff here treated us like royalty, and more. Guests to entertain, family events to celebrate, a quiet night out with your significant other? The impeccable staff will look after you. Strategically located in the city center, close to public transport and in the happening part of Chinatown, Little Bourke Street.<br/> <br/>Clean and well maintained, with attention to detail in every dish, even the seafood is hand picked, and cooked in unique Chinese styles.<br/><br/>A fine dining experience. Recommended for all occasions. Will definitely come back next time and recommend it to friends and family too.

I went there a couple of weeks ago, the service was lovely, the food was amazing, it was very busy but I loved it! You must try it!

We chose Bamboo House based on reviews, and it was a good choice. We enjoyed the meal overall, but it didn't quite live up to the hype.<br/><br/>We called up a couple of weeks before to book our table and the woman on the phone was so sweet and helpful, offering us lots of advice. Nice, personal touch.<br/><br/>On the night:<br/>The staff were friendly and attentive, but they were all rushing around, and it felt like they were just rushing to get everything done, so we didn't feel like we had their full attention.<br/><br/>We ordered cocktails and a half bottle of wine which were very nice. We particularly liked that we could order a half bottle.<br/><br/>We also ordered a couple of starters. The prawn toast and fried won tons. The toast was OK but lacked a little in flavour. Nice that they used whole prawns though. The won tons weren't great. Slightly overdone and a miniscule piece of meat in them, so it was mainly crispy wonton wrapper. And they were quite tasteless.<br/><br/>Most reviews rate the Peking duck, so we went with that as it is a lovely dish. The waiter prepared it for us even though I asked if we could do it, but I think there was a slight translation issue. I quite like 'building' them myself but it didn't really matter. I also asked if the duck meat would be shredded and was told yes, but it came as slices, again, not a biggy.<br/><br/>A nice touch was when the waiter bought us one portion each to eat while he prepared the rest, then presented the rest at the table after prepping them. We ordered a half duck which resulted in four rolls each, which was the perfect amount. And it was very tasty.<br/><br/>We finished our meal, and didn't feel the need to stay on because of the busy, rushed vibe. <br/><br/>It was very busy that night, but overall we had a nice meal with polite, albeit, distant service. I wonder if it would have been different if the place was less busy.<br/><br/>I would recommend Bamboo House, but my advice, don't buy into the hype too much, and you'll probably enjoy it a lot better.

Awesome Restaurant. This has got to be one of the best places i've dine in Melbourne EVER! The service provided by Bamboo House and their staff is sensational... I've dine moderate-high end restaurant but the service of Bamboo House is way above many high end restaurant in Victoria. The experience of it was loved by my family and friends.<br/><br/>I've enjoyed the food so much and the Peking duck was definitely an awesome treat! I don't believe I've come across a Peking duck taste as good as the Bamboo House.<br/><br/>In general, the experience was definitely 10/10!<br/>5 star quality and service!!!

Amazing chinese restaurant. Went there for lunch, didn't expect much as i only want better dining environment than being pushed around in the crowd. <br/>it turned out being quite a surprise, dishes are creative, very tasty and fresh, i dine out often, but haven't come across their dishes in those cheap end of chinese restaurants which market on people with budget. <br/>their smoked duck is amazing, the dessert is great too, crap meat omlette is so fresh, their dumping- definitely different standard from other dumpling places. <br/><br/>outstanding food, great dining environment, good service, money well spent, will definitley visit again

Thank you Anna!. We had a luncheon in the private room at Bamboo House yesterday and I just wanted to thank the staff and in particular Anna who was an amazing help. <br/>Very attentive and efficient and also a lovely person. <br/>We will definitely be hosting more lunches there in the future. <br/>Thanks again!

Thank you bamboo house. Recently dined at Bamboo House and was pleased with both the food and the service. Two stand out dishes that i would highly recommend would be the san choi bow and the salt and pepper calamari. Overall a pleasurable experience.

Standing out from the crowd. First impressions are so important! Looks classy but not overbearing. Although it was late in the evening and they were busy, a waiter stopped what he was doing and found a table for us. Service was prompt, efficient and friendly. Started with the steamed dumplings, and they didn't disappoint. For someone who can't decide, the combination dish gave a good representation of the different meat and seafood choices. Plenty of wines by the glass. A quality place that doesn't rely on the Chinatown hype.

Fantastic Food. 15 of us for lunch visited Bamboo House for a corporate lunch, was fantastic. The Peking duck was wonderful and a real signature dish for the restaurant. Calamari fresh, spicy and really enjoyable. Would highly recommend a visit.

Overrated,Too much batter. Highly overated ....I was looking for a top class asian retsraunt . I visited urban spoon and seen the highly praised Bamboo House reviews .Do not believe them. As a group of six we ordred there top shelp dish's<br/>King prawns ,Scallops ,Beef dish's ,Pork dish's and some other dish's .Now to my suprise the seafood dishs were smothered in batter like a food court,.not impressed...most .premium chinese restraunts or top seafood restraunts lightly fry the seafood without batter so you can taste the quality of the seafood and how fresh it is ... who knows how old this stuff was .The meat dish's were ok beef eye fillet was nice ,pork was good but the marinades were boring ... tasted like a supermarket bottled marinade nothing exotic .<br/>Waiters were difficult to communicate with ,dish's came out different times ,poor service .<br/>Reviews have been wriiten by diners who have never eaten top shelf asian food <br/>All in all overpriced ,overrated ,not recommended

Fabulous!. Went to Bamboo House on Monday night while on holiday in Melbourne and just loved it. The staff were so friendly and attentive, we wanted for nothing the entire evening. My two daughters were amazed when they left the table to go to the bathroom that one of the waiters came over and refolded their napkins back into shape (probably explains why they went to the toilet 3 times, I'm sure they were trying to catch him out!) The food was absolutely beautiful, I found it difficult to pick which dish I liked the best. We ordered tastes of everything from San Choi Bow, Spicy Calamari, Pan fried and steamed dumplings, Baramundi with steamed spinach and coriander, peking duck, fried rice and an eggplant dish which is one of their specialties. All of it was delicious and I would highly recommend to everyone. Next time we're in Melbourne we will be going back.

9.5/10. I went to Bamboo House for lunch today with my boss and it was lovely, we had the sliced beef with ginger and vegetables which was very nice, and the Sichuan chilli prawns which were Amazing. The waiters were absolutely delightful, 10/10 for service. The only issue was that the rice was a tiny bit dry, but if we had ordered saucier dishes it wouldn’t have been a problem. Can't wait to come back and try more dishes :)

Best Peking duck in Melbourne

Nothing bad to say about bamboo house. The dishes were nice good but nothing spectacular. However the Peking duck is certainly a signature dish and I would highly recommend. The service was average but the food made up for it. Overall it was a nice meal and you wont be disappointed.

No bulls**t good Chinese. Bamboo House is a great example of sticking with what they do best and not changing facade to 'get with the times'. I highly recommend their peking duck. A little pricey, but you get what you pay for. The service is spot on and the service staff seem to have a great rapport with regulars. We also tried the san choi bao which was excellent. Good selection of 1/2 bottle wines.

Best dumplings and best peking duck that we've had in Melbourne. Put smiles on our bellies! Excellent service too. Can't wait to return.

Dumplings are amazing, Waiters are hysterical " your eyes are bigger than your belly"

Have recommended bamboo house to many family and friends, and it quickly become their favourite also. A very down to earth restaurant with prompt service, and consistently serving the best Chinese cuisine in Melbourne.

Always good.. Have been coming here for years most Sundays in fact and can only hope since Robert left is has remained the same, will find out on Tuesday. Food always exceptional.

Yum!. Had an excellent night there! started off with some great dumplings and onion pancake! this was not the typical type found in some restaurants - it had mini onion/chive pieces stuffed within a fried 'doughnut' - juicy and delightfully rich in flavour!<br/>we had the tea smoked duck which was very strong in flavour and demonstrated the whole smoking process!<br/>the pepper beef was flavoursome, and kung po prawns were also very delicate!<br/>service was hard to fault, and we had an attentive waiter the whole night!<br/>will be back again!

This place is a cut above the rest - the waiters are attentive and polite, the food is top notch. Beware the prices though - mains start at $24, even at lunch. But for something special this is a good choice!
