Review Mamasita - Melbourne

Jon Humphries
Great fancy Mexican food. Good atmosphere. Most tables are bar tables with stools, which isn't a problem, unless you really care about traditional chairs. Really friendly and helpful staff. Food came promptly and was hard to fault.

Hard to go wrong here, great service, good food, excellent vibe. We had the corn along with lamb, fish, and pork Tacos. All of them were good but the pork taco really stood out with how juicy the pulled pork was. Also recommend adding the jalapeño sauces as they were great.

Came recommended to me by friends and family. We walked in and noticed mostly men in suits. Didn’t have a reservation and got one of the last tables. No nachos on the menu. But the tacos were the best we’d ever had!! High ceilings, quite sophisticated mexican bar vibe. Table and bar seating available. Service is very friendly. I recommend everyone to come here. It’s hard to find mexican this good in Sydney. Came back a year later with my mum and dad and didn’t like the corn tortillas, prefer flour. Mum doesn’t like coriander haha We even got adventurous and tried the goat tostadas! They were great! My favourite; Grilled fish tacos with achiote, red onion salsa, cabbage, lime and chipotle mayo - such amazing fish tacos! $7

Great service 👏 good food even though we didn't like the beef, barely touched it and had to return because sauce tasted weird. I got wrong flavored drink served but the waitress was actively willing to fix the mistake. She took the beef back and asked if we want anything else. We ordered second round of pork belly and fish tacos 🌮 because they were delicious. Definitely recommended to have those. Octopus was a bit plain but we still ate it. Corn on cob was good too. We didn't get charged for beef which is nice because we didn't eat it. At the end, we were happily surprised that the second round of tacos were complementary as well even though we didn't ask for free food. So, well done on customer service 👏 thank you

Amazing! Will be back and try more stuff! Love the tacos and our server (long hair guy, sorry I forgot to ask your name) is so attentive and even make sure I was ok with the food as I’m pregnant! Marvelous! Top notch service. Also we did ask about their famous corn ice cream and he made it happen for us! Such an amazing dinner. Thank you again and again! He deserves a reward!

The food was fantastic, the cocktails were amazing (highly recommend the Mexican Mojito) and the service was exceptional! One of the absolute best restaurants in Melbourne with a great vibe. A++

We loved our recent dinner at Mamasita. The staff are delightful and know their stuff: they helped us choose some tasty beverages. The food is knock-out delicious and probably the best Mexican in Melbourne. Try the degustation! The restaurant has a beautiful, magical atmosphere, and even the high tables are comfortable. We can't wait to come back. ❤️

Fantastic service. We were seated at the bar and I have to say we had the best seats in the house. The bartenders are so engaging, entertaining and KIND! Incredible group of humans, and it took the already amazing food to brand new heights for the evening. Thank you Mamasita!

Rating: 4.5<br/>Food: 4.5<br/>Value: 4.5<br/>Service: 5<br/>Ambience: 4<br/><br/>We decided to celebrate our anniversary at this fancy bar-like restaurant located near Parliament station. <br/><br/>You walk up to a romantic well-designed space with friendly staff who are quick to seat you down and fun to chat with. The dining was buzzing with chill vibes filled with couples drinking and laughing the night away. The only complaint would be it was a little dark to see what we were eating. <br/><br/>We ordered the feed me banquet for two, since we don’t have Mexican cuisine much and we’re excited to get adventurous. Be warned, as the banquet can be very filling, even though my partner and I have big appetites. <br/><br/>Firstly, they offered some tortilla chips to start off with. We could tell they were freshly made, and everything was perfect like any basic nachos. This was, however, not on the list of out feed me and had no idea until we paid, but nothing to complain about when it was yummy! <br/><br/>The dishes I really enjoyed and would recommend from the feed me banquet were: ceviche, shellfish tostadita, quesadilla and any of their larger dishes. <br/><br/>The ceviche and shellfish tostadita is what I will be coming back for - these were to die for. The fish were so fresh, and the addition of the tangy citric flavours made the dish not only fresher but more explosive in the mouth. <br/><br/>The restaurant created the tastiest thing i had ever had that now whenever I go to any Mexican restaurant, I have to order quesadillas. The quesadilla is made up of a yummy goat’s cheese, with caramelised onions, corns and pork chorizo, drizzled with a spicy kick of spicy mayo. There was so much going on, but the elements all blended well together, almost as if I was eating a burger! <br/><br/>The pork tacos were just as delicious, with the well seasoned pulled pork, and the pork scratchings giving that crunch, and the chilli and herbs giving that freshness and kick. <br/><br/>The corn was really buttery, and the addition of the lime and chipotle mayo was a heavenly combination of flavours executed well. <br/><br/>I loved their main dish, which was a slow cooked beef with an abundant amount of some rich beefy sauce and some peanuts, which worked really well together. The beef, however, was slightly tough and dry, which wasn’t enjoyable compared to the other dishes that dealt more with raw ingredients. <br/><br/>The Mexican tomato rice, however, was a let down. I wasn’t sure whether the hard undercooked rice was a Mexican feature, but it was very bland. The only thing I enjoyed on that dish were those sweet potato crisps. <br/><br/>By the time we got on the rice, my partner and I were very full, which could mean my opinion for the rest of the dishes may be skewed. We got a nice sweetcorn icecream with caramel popcorn to finish the night, but I was too full to enjoy, but the popcorn did taste slightly chewy. <br/><br/>This is a very late review and some dishes may not be available anymore, however, the unique experience of Mexican cuisine is truly worth it at Mamasita. I will be coming back with friends to enjoy their drink options and finger-licking dishes.

Everyone must try here!

Good Mexican food in the city. Corn is well cooked and has great flavour. The slow cooked meat falls off the bone. Service is good.

Probably the best Mexican I have been to. Close quarters dining in well designed space. Staff were friendly with a fast paced service. We had one of the banquet options which is fully recommended. Each course had a unique take on the traditional Mexican dishes. Mad selection if tequilas for those who like that spirit.
Ana
absolutely delicious food we especially enjoyed the potatoes guac and the jackfruit tacos!! the only downside was an annoying bar tender/server that kept coming to our table asking us if we wanted tequila even though we said we weren’t drinking haha

Came here on a weekend with a booking, we were running late but I was very happy with how the staff waited for us and didn’t try to rush us.<br/>The corn was good, although I regret not getting corn on the cob.<br/>We ordered a serve of all the different tacos and surprisingly we enjoyed the ox tongue the most!( not expecting it) the fish and calamari and pork were quite standard and it didn’t feel too different to where I’ve had it before.<br/>However we did not enjoy the pineapple punch as much😢<br/>Everything else we were happy with.
Jenny QUINN
Jackfruit taco was very interesting.<br/>The rest of the foods were average for us. <br/>The atmosphere was very nice and chill.
Kershia
We generally love Mexican food, but found this experience to be underwhelming. The best flavour we got was out of the sauces that are on the table. However I will say the potatoes were delicious and the best dish we ordered. The fish tacos were average and small, despite being advised that the dishes are mainly made to share... the ambience and layout etc were all beautiful and the atmosphere was nice. But definitely didn’t enjoy the food unfortunately. Maybe this was more what we ordered ? I don’t know...

wow what a delightful dining experience! my friend and i chose the "feed me" option. after the first bite i took i was already in heaven! the flavours were so delicious! my friend and i had such a good time! it was an amazing food journey! also the vibe of the place is really relaxed and friendly. and the staff are super attentive and friendly! i highly recommend thsi place! you should make a booking too, because it is quite popular.

Overall all food and bev was good but nothing really stood out. Yes the signature rib was nice. <br/>Their seasoning was bland in general I didn’t feel much Mexican theme. <br/>Def overprice. <br/><br/>Service was just okay. Except this waiter, I understand he wanted to clear the table but while one of us was still eating why would he ask if he could take the plate? And that happened twice. <br/>Never refilled water had to ask 3 times even our booking was at 9.15pm and it’s not busy. <br/><br/>I just don’t have a reason to go back.
Chips Before Dips
Unfortunately I walked away from Mamasita a little underwhelmed. <br/>We got the chefs favourites tasting menu, and added on the beef short rib, which came down to just over $90 a head (including the 10% added surcharge for Sunday’s). <br/>I felt the value for money just wasn’t quite there when compared with other locations in the city of the same caliber. <br/>While the food was good, no dish stood out as hugely memorable. I did enjoy the corn, and the 2 different tostaditas the most. <br/>2 people on our table requested seafood-free alternatives, and their portions were larger than the seafood dishes feeding the 4 remaining diners at the table. <br/>I didn’t much enjoy the crispy school prawns, and the dessert tiramisu only tasted of cream and sugar. <br/>The margaritas were nice, and the staff friendly, however I sadly won’t be in a rush to return.

Great food, great cocktails and friendly service. Will be back.

Been wanting to visit this institution for a while. We tried a few different dishes which were all very delicious. The spare ribs absolutely melt in your mouth. Bit pricey for the size but worth the try. Must eat with the sauces! Will return.

I have come to Mamasita for a few years now the menu has changed a lot since then in some ways for the better however, the corn in a cup has been completely changed to something not even resembling the delicious flavour it was had.

I really love this place. I've been here a few times and it never disappoints. We arrived around 3.30pm, just before it started to get busy, so we were seated quite easily. We ordered the corn chips and guacamole, the fish tacos, and corn on the cob. The fish tacos were cooked to perfection, although I felt it had slightly too much cabbage. The corn was a highlight, definitely a must try! This place is worth queuing up for, I will keep coming back.

We dined at Mamasita for lunch and really enjoyed the shared lunch menu for $29 per person. This consisted of the Smokey corn, ceviche, taco and ice cream. Each dish was full of flavour, and beautifully presented. Great drink offerings and enjoyed the sangria.<br/><br/>The dessert icecream cone in particular was very generous and a great way to finish the meal.<br/><br/>Only feedback is that as we were seated we were offered some “welcome cornchips” for the table, which were bought out with guacamole.<br/>When we received our receipt, we were charged for this dish.<br/>We don’t at all have a problem with this being a chargeable item and would have most likely still had them even if we had been told they were chargeable, however just wanted to point out that staff should point out that this isn’t a complimentary dish when offering. One assumes a welcome dish when offered by staff, is a welcome gesture without cost (similar to prawn crackers at a Chinese restaurant). As I mentioned, we would have had no issue paying for this, but just feel it should be more transparent when being offered.<br/><br/>Highly recommend a visit and will definitely be back!

Haven’t been to mamasita for more than 10 years, and it’s great to be back to fantastic food, service and atmosphere. Love everything here including the desserts. The queue starts forming at 5pm so do get in early!

After being recommended here by a friend and reading amazing reviews, I was keen to try this restaurant. Unfortunately it didn’t live up to expectations. It’s not that the food was bad, it was just average and for the price of the restaurant, I expected a little better. The worst meal of the night was the shellfish ceviche tostada as it was covered in a lot of sauce which tasted exactly like tomato sauce and was quite sickening. The best dish of the night was the braised beef cheek tostada. The meat just fell apart and the flavours were delicious. Overall, it was unfortunately an average experience with an above average price.

Discover Mamasita, one of Melbourne’s favourite Mexican restaurant hotspots on Collins Street in Melbourne CBD. If you enjoy Mexican tapas style eating with a great atmosphere and quality tequila then Mamasita is the place for you.

Kara C was great and the girl with the accent who told me my coudaroy top was nice.

I would definitely come back here just for the cocktails. The smoky margarita is the best I've ever had. Great selection of Mezcal also. This used to be one of my favourite places back in the day. I'm not sure if it's my taste that has changed but I didn't enjoy the food as much as I used to. It was average. Even the corn (which I used to order for dessert also!) was just ok. I think for the price (which was expensive) and the fact the service was only ok, it wouldn't be my pick of the bunch any more. Cocktails though -amazing and I appreciate that you can book a table now :)

This little Mexican restaurant was packed with people at night so don't forget to reserve a table in advance. The corn cobs tasted amazing and was definitely my favourite dish of the night! The beef rib was also delicious and was very tender. The tortilla chips were average and the lime cured fish was just ok as I think there could be more flavours to it. The tacos were nice tho. I had a mocktail called 'Family Recipe Harchata' and I loved it!
Sancha Noranho
Oh. MY. GOSH! The fish tacos and corn here are something you HAVE to try if you ever go here. While the ox tongue and pork tacos are pretty standard fare, you can write an ode to the fish taco. We ordered one of each and couldn't help but be blown away by the deliciousness of the fish taco

Didn’t have a reservation, they found us a spot at the bar, enjoyed the feed me menu. Tacos were legit. Tostada was yum and the food around us all looked amazing. Highly recommend.
Josephine
Booked a week in advance and on the website there were 3 options for seating. Table, high chairs or bar. I opt for the table because it's more comfortable. When we arrived we actually got situated on high chairs facing the wall. We didn't mind since it's just the 2 of us but if you're offering seating options shouldn't we have gotten a table? Or an explanation at least?<br/><br/>Thats the only downside but everything else was amazing. Would have given a 5 if it weren't for the seating situation. The food: highlight was the ceviche! Stunning dish that was so flavourful and packed a punch. Corn on the cob was cooked perfectly. Taco and quesadillas were fire. The chicken was cooked to perfection. Would highly recommend if you're feeling like Mexican food. I know I will!
Whalesfoodadventure
Great service. Highly recommend the feed me menu. The veggie tostadita had heaps of flavour. Loved the cashew cream. Meat and veggie tacos were also very juicy. The salted caramel popcorn was delicious.
Walter
I would say the food is okay, good for when you’re feeling like mexican food but please note that the prices here are expensive and the portions are as big as your average tacos. Other than that the food is flavorful and fresh

SURCHARGE FOR CREDIT CARDS.<br/>This venue is very busy (always is!!!). We came for a romantic dinner.  The lighting was low and created pleasing ambiance. Tables are placed quite close together to allow for many diners, and the whole table had to be pulled out or moved for the diner seated on the bench seating to leave the table. There was salsa music playing in the background at a low volume.  <br/> <br/>We had a few dishes, which were very nice, but were also very expensive.  <br/> <br/>Street style corn - The corn cobs were covered with cheese and paprika. This dish was mildly spicy which allowed the full flavours of the corn and cheese to be tasted. The queso cheese was fully mature and tangy and a standout part of this dish. The lime wedge complemented the cheese, corn and paprika. While the paprika (chipotle) was outstanding, there did not appear to be any mayo as shown on the menu.  <br/> <br/>Chicken Wings - These were well prepared, with a pleasantly Smokey flavour. The skin was crisp and the meat juicy and tender. The sauce was sticky, flavourful and quite spicy especially when compared with other dishes (which had much less spice). <br/> <br/>Market Fish Taco - The fish was fried to perfection. Cabbage and lime were welcome additions to this dish. The achiote added authentic and earthy flavours. The chipotle mayo was used sparingly so as not to overpower the other flavours. <br/> <br/>Chicken Pippin Rojo - The chicken (half) was presented in four pieces which made it easy to share between the two of us. It was served on top of the peanut-pepita chilli sauce and topped with sesame seeds and fresh coriander. The chicken was well cooked, and mildly spicy. The chicken had a well-cooked, sticky yet tender consistency. The peptic chilli sauce and coriander complemented each bite of the chicken.  <br/> <br/>All in all this was a great venue. We were charged a surcharge for credit card payments. Book ahead!!!

On the plus side, the staff were friendly and helpful. And the quality of food was good.<br/><br/>Otherwise I don't get the hype. Quantity and price were disappointing.

I was disappointed with my visit to Mamasita. First, the good. Booking was easy. Done online. Then I had to make a slight change and when I called the restaurant they called back in a timely fashion and were very friendly. Our waiter was also wonderful. Her mind seemed to be elsewhere a little but she was so helpful and friendly despite how run off her feet she was. All the staff we encountered were lovely. The sangria was nice. The pork tacos and chicken wings were nice. The ceviche was outstanding. Dish of the night. Just so good. Also the desserts were quite nice. All food was presented artistically. Now the less than good things. The tables are so squashed together. I felt almost on top of the people next to us, but also it made it hard for the waiters to serve. We were having to pass plates, move glasses to be filled etc. Just too crammed in. Uncomfortably so. The corn (signature dish) was just ok. The braised beef cheek tostada was a bit dry and had a weird taste. The potatoes also had an unusual flavour that wasn't appealing. The chorizo quesadilla had barely any chorizo and absolutely no spice despite being told it was one of the spiciest dishes. It was basically a tortilla with heaps of melted cheese and covered in caramelised onion. If chorizo is the first name in the dish I'd expect that to be the star of the dish and at least have enough on there. I gave it to others to eat who could also only eat a small amount each. We also weren't told there were different sittings. About 7.30pm we were told the table was booked for 8pm and we'd have to be out. We were told very politely but we weren't expecting it. They'd run late with our mains and then when they asked us if we wanted dessert we were told we only had half an hour left. Fine if you book a first sitting and you are aware you're on the clock. But if you're not told that's a bit rough. It was my first time there so maybe it's known as a two sitting restaurant but I didn't know. Often when you book online it lets you know there's a later sitting. This booking system didn't do that. Perhaps that's technology for the venue to consider. I can see how this restaurant might work for people who want to come in and sit at the bar for a drink and quick snack (ceviche or chicken wings) before a show perhaps. Or for a later night digestif and dessert, because the drinks and desserts were good. But for a dinner out, Melbourne is spoilt for choice with great dining establishments, so this is not a place I'd choose to dine at again.
Rita
We arrived early.  The place was empty but was only offered the bar which was fine as we only had 45 minutes to be at the Athenaeum Club for a Musical.  Drinks were good, as was the sparkling water.  The first dish we shared was the Tortilla chips with the guacamole, salsa with cheese - a very safe dish and enjoyable.  We then ordered the braised beef cheeks each.  The cubes of beef were so tough and had a terrible taste to them that I could not eat them.  I told the waiter that it was not edible as it had been over cooked and so tough but he seemed not to be interested in my comments.  At that point, we decided to leave and the place was full.  Clearly not a good choice on our part.
Wearekimleaf
After the years of hype about this place I have finally visited and was quite disappointed of the flavours and the dishes presented. We chose the chefs menu and i would think they’d bring they’re best but 7/8 of our dishes were cold. The best thing I remembered was the dessert. Such a shame.

Very happy it's possible to book these days so we could get a table without the fuss of queuing. The food here is great - so much flavour from the exciting combination of ingredients. The big menu caters for diverse tastebuds and encourages sharing.<br/><br/>We ordered many dishes but the highlights were pork shortrib, macadamia and cashew chorizo Tostada and the perfectly crunchy fried fish tacos. Every dish was tasty and had fun textures.<br/><br/>Loved that we can see the food pictures using a QR code on the menu. Service was polite but not always quick, including forgotten drinks. The decor, lighting and salsa music creates a lively atmosphere. It's a place worth returning for the awesome flavours.

Fave Mexican place in Melbourne. Great atmosphere and dim lighting inside. Food was a bit slow to come out, but was delicious when it arrived. Good mix of authentic Mexican and modern flavours.

My husband and I went for dinner last week and unfortunately left a little disappointed. <br/><br/>We had absolutely no issues with the staff; they were lovely, attentive and the dishes were exactly as described. It was the food that let this place down.. <br/><br/>We went ahead with the &lsquo;feed me&rsquo; option and it started off well. <br/><br/>Starters <br/><br/>- These were fantastic; corn and two types of soft tacos (seafood and pork)<br/>- By the time we had finished one starter, the next one arrived soon after which was perfect<br/><br/>There was a bit of a delay between starters and mains but when the mains came we were excited to see many plates brought to us. This was the turning point&hellip; roast chicken tacos, rice with carrots and corn, a pear salad and a beef short rib. <br/><br/>Mains <br/><br/>- The beef short rib was delicious &ndash; falling off the bone with a marrow sauce. YUM<br/>- The roast chicken was plain and flavourless. We put a red sauce on it which made it taste marginally better<br/>- The pear in the salad was soft. We&rsquo;re used to hard pears in salad but have never come across a soft stewed pear in a salad. It seemed misplaced and as if it should be in a dessert. No idea if this is authentic Mexican or not<br/>- We could taste coconut milk in rice. Again, not sure if this is authentic Mexican or not but it seemed like this would be better placed on an Asian menu<br/><br/>Dessert<br/><br/>- Salted caramel icecream cones. Sounds delicious, looked delicious but were not ☹ <br/><br/>- The popcorn on top was delicious <br/><br/>- The icecream itself was plain. Couldn&rsquo;t taste any flavour; salted caramel, vanilla, nothing. The serve was quite big &ndash; it would have been better off to have a smaller size with robust flavours <br/><br/> <br/>Given we dropped more than $150, I would have expected a better meal like what I can get at Fonda for half the price.

Every single thing we had was absolutely delicious!<br/>Corn on the cob, chorizo quesadillas, FRIED FISH TACOS (omg) and the beef ribs were divine! Finished it off with the flan which was perfection!
Kathy Wang
Love the lime fish dish for the starters. The ox tongue taco was great, and the soft taco wrapped nicely around the ox tongue. The prawns for the main was good too!
Angela Fan
Been here twice. The first one got a few tacos and the elote on the cob, absolutely delicious and decided to come back again for the feed me menu. Firstly, we were seated on the bar table when there were other seated tables free for the entire duration of our booking. There was not much room at all on the table for food, plates and whatnot. <br/><br/>The food second time round was really nothing special. The main (not pictured) was 4 huge pieces of chicken that you had to shred yourself and top with the sauce to make tacos. The chicken was quite dry and the meal felt extremely bulky with the amount of chicken and rice. Felt strange having a ‘DIY’ taco main when there was already tacos on the starter... <br/><br/>Dessert was delicious, sweet corn ice cream with caramel popcorn on top. Nothing to fault here. <br/><br/>Overall, we left the place very full but not quite satisfied. My first experience was absolutely incredible which may have set expectations way too high. <br/>

Took our parents (for their birthdays) on Saturday night. Nice venue. We chose the Staff Favourites share menu and were entranced when the head chef proceeded to come and explain every course in fine detail to us, including origin, ingredients, cooking style etc. Nice touch. Staff were very friendly and we all had a very memorable experience. The food was delicious. Can highly recommend - and will definitely try to come back.<br/>Thankyou :-)

Starters and desserts were the best. Main course menu was good but could have a widespread variety. Overall was a good experience of lunch with my team.<br/>

Mamasita is one of my favourite restaurants in Melbourne. I always bring my interstate visitors here when they visit Melbourne. The ambience, food, cocktails are all amazing. Can’t rave enough about this place!
MeaganJaye
Visited Mamasitas last weekend and had very high hopes after the rave reviews it has. Must say the cocktails are great and look super pretty service was great staff were lovely and knowledgeable. My friend and I shared the feed me banquet and must say the food was good portions were smaller than I expected. However I had higher expectations for the flavours of the meals. Still a good feed but a tad expensive for what you get.
Chef ASD
First thing very friendly lady staff Eleanor and the head chef. Very good interior and ambiance. Food is not delay everything on time.<br/><br/>We order so much but I can't post all dishes here. But some of them beyond on taste, the tacos and desserts.<br/><br/>We just disappointed with their fish, may be the flavour's are missing on it.<br/><br/>Over all its a good Mexican restaurant to try in Melbourne Colin's street.<br/><br/>

Amazing food, impecable service and great creativity in the drinks department.  Chef Martin is very, very talented and the staff are (very obviously) well trained in the finer points of hospitality.    <br/><br/>PS> I'm Mexican - so I'm naturally cynical about Mexican food outside of my home. This team exceeds any pre-conceptions of what Mexican food outside of Mexico might be.  In fact, the contemporary twist on classic dishes is not only more than welcome, it's a fantastic culinary experience!

A birthday celebration sadly at Easter. So a group of 8, too for ever to get seated as staff milled around with not much to do. But we needed to wait for the host ... a wait of around 5 minutes. <br/>Seated. Menus. Drinks took too long. <br/>Drinking. Order taking took too long<br/>Food was good ... banquet was a great blend of foods, extra chili in the side could have been good for those that like it hot<br/>Alcohol service was variable - some v quick and some painfully slow<br/><br/>Ok. It was Easter weekend. 15% surcharge hurt. But an eftpos surcharge on top of a surcharge was rich. The service was not THAT good!
Melissa
I’m really surprised at the amount of 5 star reviews. Mamasita is an ‘okay’ Mexican place. The service is pretty good, the decor is okay. My partner and I ordered: tortilla chips with guac, salsa, frijoles and cheese ($13); beef ($14) and shellfish ($16) tostadas; fried fish tacos ($15.50); and cochinita pork quesadilla ($16). The highlight was the fried fish tacos. The quesadilla was sad-looking, especially for $16. The tostadas were nothing special. Maybe I’m biased as I have had Mexican overseas where tortilla chips and dips are unlimited and free, and the food is better quality and more substantial. With a margarita, soft drink and compulsory donation to charity our bill came to $111. The ‘meh’ experience means I probably will not return to Mamasita.

Not blown away by our visit here. Service is friendly and atmosphere is nice but the food and price didn’t meet the hype for me. The corn chips with guacamole they offer you to start when you sit down before giving you a menu are $15, not complementary. The chicken we ordered for our main was pretty dry and we had a tostada and vegetable tacos which were okay but all i could taste in the roast veggie tacos was kale and beans. the brownie with raspberry sorbet was delicious, as were our cocktails.

Tuesday evening catch up with some friends was perfect at Mamasita! Our host, Max has a top notch service! Great at recommending - everything turned out delicious and well portioned with a mixture of starters, small and medium plates to share. <br/><br/>Amazing vibe and fantastic service. I highly recommend Mamasita if you’re craving for good quality Mexican food in the heart of Melbourne.

Now this was a dinner spot we decided last minute to check out. Didn’t want to keep going to Fonda for Mexican and caught wind of this spot tucked away on Collins. Didn’t have to wait that long for a Thursday night and got a seat at the bar. Great service and happy to talk about the business and their vast selection of mezcal. Food was really good, great balance of sour and spice. They didn’t have to twist our arm much to see the dessert menu. Thanks for having us team and keep it up!!

Tasty food, lively ambience, lovely staff, overall interesting experience. We had a great experience with the mexican food here. The place is kinda costly, So we stuck to the nachos and the nut chorizzo tostadas.
Azusa
Went there with a group, had their banquet, the food is not bad but for the price they charge vs food i wouldnt go back. Stand out are drinks and the fish and corn ice cream at the end. Some of the dishes was really meh, the fish came with a garden salad of some sort, they look like compost and taste like just a bunch of peels put together with vinegar. Service is ok, nothing to write home about, 7 of us with about 3 jugs of drinks with the bill about $800. With all the choices in the city i certainly wont be back in a hurry.

One of the highlights from my gruelling experience undertaking the South Australian Matriculation (SAM) in Taylor's College 10 years ago would be the friends I have met there. From day 1 until the very last days of college, everyone in my class were absolute gems be it with helping cover each other's class absence to celebrating birthdays at nearby cafes/ restaurants to studying together after classes.

We had a tasty meal here tonight. The only downside was the hefty $15 price tag for the sparkling water (on tap, not bottled) which barely had any gas in it.

This is my favourite Mexican restaurant in Melbourne. No, in Australia. It’s a must visit for me every time I visit. We really need more Mexican restaurants like Mamasita in Australia, especially in Sydney. #mexicanfood #tacos #elotes

First time here and everything was great! Love the chargrilled corn and tacos trust me they are so yummmm. Cocktails were also amazing. I ordered the pink cooler and it’s superb. The only thing is...careful with the tequila...I got drunk and lost my phone 😂
Rowland
This place used to be amazing and we used to go very often.<br/><br/>The last few times have been so average, we thought maybe it was a one off and tried a few more times but they change in the menu and the service was very average and we haven’t been back since. Such a shame as it was our favourite restaurant!

Totally gone downhill!<br/>What the hell happened to this place?<br/>I used to love it here but not anymore.<br/>Just had an anniversary dinner here - the tacos are gross and sloppy, they tasted cheap and nasty.<br/>The fried fish taco had no sauce and some dried cut up cabbage all over it and too much batter! Where is the sauce?<br/>The pork taco was just gross , too sloppy and too much meat , it was just a big sloppy cheap tasting taco.<br/>The tostadas are just one big corn chip with a garnish that you cannot share!<br/>The mojito has no alcohol and tasted like cordial with some mint herbs.<br/>Seriously $120 for that is unacceptable and I will never eat here ever again and I suggest whoever is reading this to spend your money elsewhere. <br/>If you are expecting good quality Mexican, you’ll notice the kitchen is staffed by Chinese who clearly don’t know how to cook Mexican food! <br/>This place used to be great and my favourite place in Melbourne, now I can say hand on heart I hate it with a passion. Truly the most disappointing experience I’ve ever had. <br/>

I’ve been here in the past and had a good experience, however today was the opposite. I was dining alone so perhaps that threw the wait staff, but given that the restaurant was half empty I expected more. Two couples on either side of me that were sat after me ordered and received parts of their meal before I was acknowledged past the initial glass of water I was given. I finally had to interrupt someone and ask to order. I wish I could say the food improved the experience but I found it bland and overpriced for what I was getting. I’m hoping this was just an off night, but I’m not sure I’ll be returning to find out.

I came to dine at Mamacita with a group of 6 friends, at one of their recommendation. We had vegetarians in the group, and they apparently offered good vegetarian and gluten free options. We rocked up around 5pm to put our name down and were pretty stunned by the rude manager taking people’s details. Not only was he dismissive, but when asked for an estimated waiting time he just kept saying “it’ll be hours” in a rude condescending tone while rolling his eyes. We ended up being contacted after about 2 hours, to a text informing us our table was ready. <br/>Our waiter was also a bit off and rude once we were seated. One of our group had to use the bathroom and he told us he’d come back to talk about the food menu but insisted we order drinks immediately (before we’d even opened the menus). We had to repeatedly tell him we would like a couple of minutes to look at both menus, especially to ensure our friends with dietary requirements could see what they offered. <br/>We eventually ordered their corn as a starter for everyone, with the chicken wings, lamb rib chops, grilled fish tacos, ox tongue tacos and pork neck for half of the group. The other half ordered vegetable tacos, a grilled fish taco and the squashflower quesadilla. The corn was the star and favourite of the night; grilled perfectly with a delicious coating of cheese, chilli and lime. The vegetarian and gluten free dishes were apparently also all tasty, and the friends with dietary requirements were all satisfied after their meal. <br/>For the rest of us though, we were pretty disappointed. I mean, the entree of corn turned out to be the only dish that wow-ed us. The chicken wings were ok; they were a bit dry but were served with a tasty sauce. The lamb rib chops had a lovely flavour and sauce as well, but were a bit chewy. The driest of them all was the pork neck. At $31 it was dry dry dry with no flavour to the meat whatsoever. The sauce didn’t do anything to help. My ox tongue tacos never served, so after asking the waiter for an update, he did not return with an explanation or apology. They were simply brought out about 10-15 minutes later. Obviously they’d been forgotten and hurriedly made. The ox tongue was (surprise) dry, and had the texture of jerky. It had obviously been overcooked.<br/>What a disappointing experience this dinner was! Not sure I want to risk returning to give this place another go. Another “popular and well-renowned” Melbourne eatery that simply left me feeling severely disappointed and curious at how they are so over-hyped. Guess we went on an especially bad night?

Pretty decent Mexican food in a city where Mexican food isn't all that popular!<br/><br/>Atmosphere: Pretty cool. Despite being on Collins street, it's a bit hidden. You have to walk up stairs to get here, and you are brought into a room with a massive bar and some additional tables for seating. Reservations are recommended, but you might be able to sneak in a spot at the bar.<br/>Presentation: The beets looked delicious, but it was a little hard to tell I was eating a quesadilla. <br/>Food: There might have been a little too much going on with the quesadilla - it was to the point where I had to use a fork and knife to eat it, and I prefer to eat my quesadilla with my hands! Despite this fact, the 'dilla was pretty good. I think I preferred the side of beets to the quesadilla, though, which is a bit odd in a Mexican restaurant. All said, the food was very good. I think i would go tacos next time.

We went on a Friday night and the restaurant was really busy consistently throughout the evening. This meant the drinks service was really slow but surprisingly the food service was not. We had 10 dishes for $69 which was amazing, a taste of a good variety. Plus one lady in our group can't have shell fish so they adjusted our 10 dishes accordingly. Great evening, nice decor, lovely food & cool cocktails.

Great food, service and location! Very well priced too. Went on Sunday night without a booking and ended up getting the best seat in the house, in front of the window!

Still to date, the Spanish place that tops the list for me. Everything here is just so fresh and perfectly balanced. The combinations are bang on - light, fresh, tangy, herby, meaty... nothing is excessive and everything serves a purpose. Great job guys!

Having tried to get into Mamasiita a couple times in the past with no success, Saturday night was the night that myself, Tim.E and his partner finally got to try Mamasita and see what the hype was about.<br/><br/>The restaurant is sleek and nice with wait staff doing their best as they were a team member down.  <br/><br/>Unfortunately, I found the food underwhelming and would say that the food in general was average and not worth the hype.  We ordered each taco along with a couple other dishes, my favourite was the ox tongue (ox tongue I know!) but other than that it was a little meh for me.<br/><br/>I won't be back anytime soon.

Hungry with no plans lead us to Mamasita. I had high expectations given the 4.6/5 rating in Zomato. <br/><br/>We were seated and given an overview of the menu. We ordered a jug of margarita and I later found out we were charged $68 wow! But it was for 3 of us I guess.<br/><br/>The food overall was ok. Wanting some variety we ordered a number of tacos and overall they were a little underwhelming to be honest. The highlight was a deep fried fish taco but that was it really. <br/><br/>Thankfully I had some wonderful company with Simmyeats.Melb and my partner lol

Excellent service! I really enjoy the vibe here and the food is delicious and very presentable. Everything is great but on the pricey side. The spiced hot chocolate is very special and worth to try. Chicken wings and taco are nice. Other things are beyond the averages. Everything else was nice. Would have loved to try some dessert but we were too full.

This place is really popular and we had to line up to get in. When we sat and look at the menu, wow they all look foreign to us since I'm not too familiar with Mexican food. They had stuff like "huitlacoche quesadita", "mariscos tostaditas", "chicken pipian". Anyway, one of each of those please, and they were really interesting. First time i've had all them. The Mariscos tostaditas is shellfish and morita peanut mayo and the Huitlacoche quesadita are cheese and mushrooms for vegetarian options.

Came here at 4.30pm on a Friday as we knew this place was going to get busy. We were right, by 5pm the restaurant was buzzing. Very friendly and attentive staff who on such a hot day, did not miss a beat when it came to ensuring we had enough water!<br/><br/>What we ordered: corn cobs, chicken wings, fish taco, pork quesadilla and chicken tostada. The corn cobs are NOT to be missed! Accompanied by amazing seasoning and chipotle sauce, I could honestly just eat 10 of those. The tacos and quesadilla were delicious and as for the tostada, though flavoursome, was sadly too spicy for me!<br/><br/>We would come back😃

AMAZING. Food, drinks, staff, atmosphere.. everything was so great. Great spice kick here and there. Had the fried fish taco (BEST dish of the night I felt), ox tongue/grilled fish tacos were great too!! The fried white bait and the kingfish collars are a MUST too. Our whole table couldn’t stop raving about the kingfish!!!
Burgers Of Melbourne
The dish you need to try is the corn on the cob. Topped with cheese, chilli and a squeeze of lemon this is a must dish that should be on everyone's bucket list. There is usually a line to get in, so if you see them at an event like TASTE - make the most of the opportunity and get the corn when you can.

A very famous Mexican restaurant in Melbourne for sure. Perfect hangout spot to enjoy some tacos and drinks. We have had many different dishes and most of them are really good. The service is also really good as well, very friendly staff. There is usually a massive queue though, so either go early or go on weekdays if you want a table.

This place was buzzing with people. Staff were friendly and made sure we got a table, after a brief wait (and delicious drink at the bar). Tacos were delicious, full of flavour, fresh and not your standard boring fillings. The corn with cheese was awesome. A Melbourne icon for a reason!

Heard great things so headed in too see what the fuss was about. Venue was really nice and in a great location. Food was good but not great. It was also on the expensive side (as expected). Had the pork tacos which were a bit dry however the flavour was great. Also tried the ox tongue but was not a fan. Recommend getting some corn as an entree it was delicious.

I’ve waited so long to come here!! Arrived at 9 so beat the rush. The braised beef tostada was a highlight for sure. The meat is melt in your mouth and the flavour is good without being over powering. The fish taco is flavoursome and fresh. Def worth the wait.

This rating is making no sense to me!<br/>The first time I tried this place I didnt write a review thinking maybe they had an 'off' day, the second time I was like ok its really hard to screw up Guacomole! I mean its the most basic and classic dish in a Mexican restaurant... it was so mushy and salty( please note, im an absolute salt-lover) that it was not edible and I ordered a fish taco, it wasnt fresh and tasted like deep frying oil! This place is just not good at all.... the staff are nice and it has a cozy vibe...hence the 2 stars!

Went here with the team and the boys. This place was mad. The malakias enjoyed their pork. They couldn’t get enough of it. They even tried the margaritas and other alcoholic beverages. The boss was over the moon and joined in with the malakias. Mickey Mouse this place

A vibe of the restaurant was very nice, helpful and friendly staff members. We came at about 8:45 on a Thursday night and it was very packed - very noisy if that’s not your thing! <br/><br/>My favour dish was the ox tongue tacos, they were so good. We also had the pork, it came in a thick dark sauce with some cream in it. The flavours were a little overpowering for me and I wasn’t used to it so much but when you mixed it with the cream it lessen it, and turned out to be nice. However overall, there was nothing that was WOWING which I thought i was coming for. <br/>It was pretty average but not a bad place!

Great service. I always enjoy the vibe. Food is delicious and that’s why I don’t mind waiting in line for a table. I had a dish with cactus once and it was my favourite.

Let me start of by saying, Mamasita used to be one of my top three favourite restaurants in Melbourne. It’s where I had my first date with my wife and it had always delivered consistently. Tonight however, was the exception. They’ve completely redesigned the menu, losing many of my favourite dishes. The service was poor and you can now only order tacos two at a time. Is this now a Fonda chain or premiere restaurant? I’m not sure if the place is under new management but it felt (the atmosphere) and tasted completely different. Very disappointing. Better off going to Touche Hombre or Radio Mexico.

Poor service. Food just ok.<br/>Forgot my dessert order right after I placed it. As the plates for the mains were being cleared away, I asked the server for the caramel popcorn ice cream. She acknowledged my request and then we waited for 10 minutes until we had to go to the bar and see what had happened to our order. <br/><br/>Next, we asked for the bill and the server just dropped off the eftpos machine at our table and walked away. <br/><br/>This kind of service made us feel uncomfortable and unwanted in the restaurant.<br/>

Mamasita was nicer back in the day. I used to work nearby and go often. The popular street corn was a must, came back tonight and it tasted like they put parmesan cheese on top instead of the delicious Mexican cheese they once had? The tacos are still nice, we had the fried fish which was crunchy but the salsa verde is a bit different? I remember it had zesty freshness with tomatillo. We also had the pork neck which had a slight Asian flavour and dry in some parts. I actually enjoyed the shoe string fries more! Service is still good & it got busy after 6pm on a Monday might.

Beautiful Mexican food, but a little too expensive. My husband and I used to eat here regularly few years back, but the very loud music and endless waiting line changed that.

The new menu is no good. The new menu is no good. The new menu is no good. The new menu is no good. The new menu is no good. The new menu is no good.

Came here last night for a friend’s birthday. The place was full on a weeknight. Waited at the bar then got seated pretty quickly at the table. Got the pork neck taco which was delicious, which we added salad on the side. I got the rockling which was a cold fish dish which I did not enjoy. My friends got the tongue taco which they loved! Cool spot for a cosy meal in the city

A booking on any night of the week is recommended. The restaurant is very busy and you are likely to be seated at the bar (or not at all) if you don't have a prior booking.<br/><br/>The service top notch. The waitress made us feel very welcome and took the time to explain the menu, but ironically it only made us feel more confused.<br/><br/>The quality of the food was overall excellent but I cannot honestly say that it's worthy of the price tag, the same goes for the small portion size. For example, the $7.50 fish taco and the $17 lamb quesadilla were absolutely tiny.<br/><br/>Putting it all together I admit that I am perplexed by the high ratings. For me despite the excellent service this was a restaurant that will put a hole in your pocket and leave you looking for a drive-through shortly afterwards.

Everything is great, but on the pricey side. The spiced got chocolate is very special and worth to try. Chicken wings and taco are nice. Other things are beyond the averages. The dinner vide is quite dark, more for a date than friends meeting.

I was here when it was fairly new and had to line up to eat to just a couple of months ago, but nothing has changed in their cooking. It is still absolutely delicious! My friend and i shared<br/>vegetarian dishes and the mushroom tostaditas was the clear winner! Yum!

Very disappointing experience and I will never go back.<br/><br/>I have been to mamasita years ago when it was a thing in town and we waited in the queue for long time. The food was good and we enjoyed the vibe in the restaurant.<br/><br/>We visited again tonight.. or at least tried to. My friend got there and waited quietly for about 20 minutes waiting for me and another friend to get there. When I got there, the person serving us insisted that they only seat us when we have a complete group. Despite the fact that we were 2 of 3 people, the last member of our party was 100m away and the restaurant was empty... the staff refused to seat us and allow us to start ordering. So as we sat there waiting in the bar, other people arrived late and went straight to their friends (already sitting at tables without a 'complete group'). The explanation was 'they had a booking'. Today is a cold winter Monday so it was pretty empty and plenty of spare tables. Just as our friend arrived outside, one of the staff came up to us and announced that another party of 3 had arrived and we would need to wait at least 30 minutes for another table for 3. Absolutely shocked at how aloof and unhelpful the staff person taking to us was. We left with shock and disappointment.<br/><br/>To mamasita: have you even wondered why you aren't as popular as you once were? It's because you don't understand people. You are too obsessed with being a 'boutique' restaurant, and have forgotten about what the true value of customer experience is. Compare with the many true amazing restaurants in Melbourne, you are really not that great.

Delicious! My favourite was the lamb rib cutlets, perfectly cooked and full of flavour, highly recommended! The tacos were yum - with lots of options to choose from. Definitely will visit again
Sinfully Delicious
I tried this place after seeing high ratings and abit disappointed with the food. The service was good and they are very attentive and the atmosphere was good however food didn’t quite live upto my expectations. Out of the 3 tacos we had the fish one was the best, the other chorizo taco had too many onions. The lamb quesadilla is a good size for sharing. The potatoes and salad with apple was a nice refreshing sides to go with the pork belly with was tender but the crackling wasn’t cracking n lacked flavour. Overall it was an ok experience, I wouldn’t come back here in a hurry.

My friend and I felt like Mexican in the city so we decided to try this place. Small wait for a table but that’s expected for a Friday night and no reservation. Staff were very attentive from the staff, explained their impressive tequila selection and offered to help with the menu. We ordered some tacos and the chicken mole verde which was yummy. I didn’t love the eggplant taco but everything else was nice. Would have loved to try some dessert but we were too full.

The best Mexican in Melbourne , Staff are wonderful and will help you choose the best items , however you haven’t properly been here until you have had the ox tongue tacos they’re that damn good !!<br/>

Love everything about this place! Such amazing food and drink. Incredible service and great atmosphere. The meats are all perfectly cooked and there is great variety for vegetarians too. Would definitely recommend this place for a nice night out but it is a bit pricey so be prepared to spend to get a food size meal.
