Review Spring Street Grocer Cafe - Melbourne

Tania Stott
Staff were friendly, thoughtful and eager to assist (even though one of them must have been very fresh and didn't know the products yet). It is like a small, charming European style paradise for select foodie items, with a quaint cafe out the front. The woman who made my coffee must have been very concerned as she wanted me to take the coffee as I was browsing in case it became cold. It is amazing to experience such genuine care and a barista who is serious about the quality of her work. Highly recommended for discerning foodies.
Jason Tabrett
The home made sausage roll with tomato sauce was amazing! The staff were friendly, gelato is delicious and a different range of food in the grocery is a nice change. The coffee was only ok as a mocha with barely chocolate powder, but the main reason for my 5 stars is that they are always open when you need them and there’s nothing else in the area with the same convenient hours!
Helen Lucas
Fantastic cheese & produce, but I have to mention few things because frankly it ends there... Coffee is the pits, soy milk over heated/ burnt coffee. They need to look at a new bean perhaps or maybe train the staff. Following on from this female cheese monger (who must run it), is so incredibly abrasive and flat out rude. Not the first time I have had this experience with them!
Rose Rodriguez-Martin
Love this place. Great salads, pre-made meals in the fridge for you to take away, and awesome hot pies and pasties too...not to mention amazing gelati! Yum, yum, yum!!
Piggy Eatalot
Love the cheese room in this place! You get to try before you buy all the cheeses. I esp like their truffle cheese and their oh-so-creamy traditionalbrie. The prices do add up though which is painful when you pay for it at the end. Also their other groceries there is somewhat pricey.

What the best sandwiches on this side of the city if not the best sandwiches in the city? This is the place to go. So many options to suit everybody! Absolutely delicious and served with potato crops! So yummy
Alice Milson
Great spot to get speciality items. Easy to find and get to with the trams if you are travelling. We'll set out inside. Offers highly recommended ice-cream! Inside are unusual and speciality cheeses, chips, sweets, and biscuits. Price is very high, however.
Thomas Liontis
They have a small range of produce available as well as a selection of drinks and other condiments. It's the closest cafe in proximity to parliament station as well so that is good. Do be aware though that they are certainly not cheap.
The Casual Diner
Will come back for:<br/>+ Chocolate gelato<br/>+ Pistachio gelato<br/><br/>Dropped by here for a bit of dessert and loved the intensity of flavors in the gelato. We tried both the chocolate and pistachio and you can really taste the ingredients in the gelato. Lovely. A great treat for a hot summer day/night. Will definitely be back to try out some of the other flavors.
Nadya Bunjamin
We went there to buy speciality cheeses but the lady downstairs who were serving us downstairs was extremely rude to us. When she realised we didn’t know which cheese to buy and asked her for her general suggestion, she didn’t want to suggest us a general answer but instead gave us an I-obviously-know-more-than-you reaction and explained to us like we’re asian idiots who can’t speak “cheese”. Please learn how to speak to your customers, whoever it is. And even though the French owner was extremely kind and accomodating, I will never come back there.

Spring Street Grocer has the best gelato and it definitely takes you back to the ones in Italy!<br/><br/>This small grocer on spring street has a gelato shop at the front and they do make one of the best gelatos in Melbourne. They do have different flavours from time to time and they are all amazing.<br/><br/>They are always consistent and the staff is friendly and attentive here.
Sharz D
Hands down the best gelato Melbourne has to offer, though the quality of the service is a far cry from the gelato. Often served by rude and impersonal serves. Went with a friend recently and the server was very annoyed with our request to sample a new flavour, and proceeded to giving us very small scoops (in comparison with the scoops she gave two gentlemen who came in after us).
Some Bunee Loves Food
This place seems to sell a bit of everything. The gelato is really nice and creamy here. They also sell smoothies and when you explore more inside, they sell a lot of groceries like cheese, pasta etc. Good find during lunch time walk.
Waych F
I’ve heard great things about this place and tried for the first time today. Tasty sandwiches with the yummiest bread! The gentleman who served me was so friendly and helpful too! I’ll be back for more lunches during my working week!

Rating 4/5<br/>Service ★★★★★<br/>Food ★★★★<br/>Ambience ★★★★<br/><br/> This is an  adorable little place at the edge of the city.<br/><br/>I’d recommend you to get a scoop of their ice cream if you happen to pass by it will impress you!<br/><br/>Really friendly and happy looking staff. We will be back for sure.

This is my go to ice cream shop after dinner in the CBD. I love their fruity flavoured gelato, especially mandarin. The place is super cute, very easy to get to
Timinmelbourne
4.5/5 <br/>This place is awesome. I love been here lots of times and surprisingly I hadn’t reviewed it yet. I love the gelato and the ice creams here. <br/><br/>This place also has s great grocery shop selling fresh fruit and some nice imported groceries. <br/><br/>This place is a must visit if your up this end of town. And my mango Sorbet was delicious. Yummo
Pineapple San
Awesome and cosy place for top notch gelato! Managed to sample a few flavours and decided to go for the rose, cardamom and turmeric. Tasted like chai + rose. The gelato was amazingly smooth and every bite was delicious! It was $5 a scoop and I wish the portion was a bit bigger just because it was so delicious! Can't wait to go back for more!
Affogato Addiction
Primavera Gelateria is the best gelato in Melbourne.<br/>Always has awesome flavours on the menu, rotating selection. Creamy style gelato as well as vegan sorbets.<br/>Serves an affogato.<br/>
Ferry Gondo
Craving for affogato satisfied. Creamy silky ice cream over fresh espresso with a sprinkle of hazelnut making such a rest in the afternoon a sublime experience.<br/><br/>The sweetness of the ice cream was balanced by the roasty bitterness from the espresso. The hazelnut crumbs gave crunchy and nutty texture to it. Perfect.
Lizzie Eats Melbourne
😱Lizzie’s first impression: I’ve visited this place time and time again and it’s always just as consistent. <br/><br/>🍩Lizzie enjoyed: Theres many flavours to choose from but I would highly recommend the pistachio flavour. It’s my favourite one. <br/><br/>🍅Lizzie did not enjoy: N/A<br/><br/>🥇Lizzie rates overall: A great place for ice cream or even an affogato with a scoop of ice cream! Worth!!
HANNAH
Spring Street Grocer is renowned with their gelato! The staff was generous to allow multiple testings before I decided on the flavour I wanted. I chose the hazelnut one and it was mouthwatering: smootth, thick texture and rich nutty taste! Nomz.
One.hungry.girl10
One of the best ice cream shops located in the Melbourne CBD . Next to spring street grocer is their little ice cream shop. My favourite ice cream is definitely the hazlenut ! They have a range of gelato and ice cream making it the perfect place to go on a hot day.
Liz
I've bought items from the actual grocery store & cheese cellar. The staff here are unfriendly and have a TERRIBLE attitude. Like seriously guys, you only work in a grocery store, you can drop the attitude.<br/>The cheese selection was OK & the items they stock are good, however they are over priced & their poor attitude does them a disservice. I've been multiple times & I just can't overlook this anymore.<br/>There are better cheese rooms in Melbourne where the selection is better, the prices are cheaper & the staff are helpful & friendly.<br/>
Diyana Samad
Quite surprise with the taste. It’s quite good! Loved the fresh taste of the fruits in the ice cream. Will definitely recommend to my friends.
Jennitals
LIT!: we tried the pistachio, lemon and strawberry sorbet listed in order of favouritism. The pistachio was creamy and the flavour was strong, they must have used a generous amount of pistachio. <br/><br/>NOT SO LIT: go with max 4 people because there's not enough seats, but hack: make your way to southern cross lane for more seats :p
Speccy
CBD's best gelato. Always interesting flavors & they are happy for u to taste test. Almond & orange blossom, dark chocolate sorbet & hazelnut - all gourmet. Beautiful!! The shop is also lovely & cheese monger down stairs which is worth checking out.
JasMine Yun
Always my to go place for Gelato! Love their pistachio and hazelnut! Best Gelato in Melbourne if I must say :) <br/><br/>The price is relatively reasonable for the portion of Gelato you have got! We have the four scope Gelato with three portion of pistachio and one portion of hazelnut. Yeap! That’s how good the pistachio is!
Sarah Gordon
Ordered a chicken and avocado sandwich and after hearing good reviews of this place I was bitterly disappointed 😔 sandwhich was the size of what you'd find in a prep's lunchbox and lacking proper filling. After the long wait and the $11.50 price tag I was expecting more 😞
Bree Hall
One girl that works there has the worst attitude ever and makes me feel so uncomfortable. So rude! The staff are generally pretty snobby but the produce is 👌🏼. They stock beautiful bread and vegan dips!
Birdman
Great little store, some nice little produce items they got going on from fresh bread to fresh pastas but let's face it we came for ice cream. We got the salted caramel one which was superb... unfortunately I compare it to the best in my eyes which is white choc salted caramel at Messina and it didn't stack up but still amazing and far better than most ice cream joints.
Hangry Dreamer
HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE GELATO. It's a great substitute for the real stuff in Italy. I'm a fan of the salted caramel but the sorbets are also quite refreshing and perfect for a summer day!
Elonie
Great gelato and sorbet in this cute grocer in the city. We tried the chocolate gelato and dark chocolate sorbet. The gelato is creamy and the sorbet is strong in the chocolate flavours. The cone has a flat bottom almost like a cup and it feels like you get more in a cone than in a cup.
GezaEats
Stout Tiramisu gelato try it if you haven't. A boldness and bitterness of stout could be tasted at the start. Thereafter came the familiar flavours of tiramisu. each mouthful made me want for more. And before i know it, my tiramisu gelato is all gone. A bitter sweet treat that's tantalising on the tastebuds. Yes.. i wanted more! P/s: rain or shine, winter or summer, i can have these gelato bad boys everyday
Michael Dunne
Amazing ice cream and coffee! Never disappoints and fantastic way to wrap up an evening! Often come here after dinner out for a dessert and walk! Really friendly staff too!
Xoxo_cindrella
Soft roast chicken, fresh avo, sprouts, and coriander with dark rye bread~~ lovely customer service~~ will come back next time and try others.
KnowingMelbourne
Delicious and unique Icecream flavours with some old Classics mixed in. You can have chocolate, hazelnut (my personal favourite) or fior Di latte OR you can try cardamom with roasted pistachio. All delicious. Then pop into the grocer for some imported delicacies or some Dr Marty's crumpets to take away. 👍🏻
Vanessa Espírito Santo
Great ice cream (pistachiooooo) and awesome cheese room 🤤🤤🤤 You'll also find some great chocolate bars on their shelves as well! What can I say.. I found myself in heaven 😇
Love At First Bite
Find us on instagram: loveatfirstbite_aus<br/><br/>This is my go-to place for an after dinner cooling sweet. The flavours are great with some very creative ones! best place in the CBD for ice-cream!
Dulicieux
Great variety of flavours here for the gelato and the front and the gelato here is great. There is often a queue though and make sure you bring cash also.
Grace Tay
This feels like your neighbourhood ice cream place. With a modern twist on the traditional gelato, the enjoyment comes from the subtleties of each flavour. Their gelato and sorbet have lighter flavours compared to other ice cream establishments like Messina or Pidapipo, but equally enjoyable. <br/><br/>Recommended: Cardamom Pistachio
Rachael
The ice cream wasn't too cold, melted quickly and was quite pricy. That being said it was tasty, rich and creamy. Don't see what the fuss is about.
Colin Tian
Found this place by accident, but easily excellent place to go for ice cream- do not judge the book by its cover, it is an easily missed store but it is also sure worth to check out. Smooth and creamy, their pistachio flavour is probably one of the best you will get to try in Melbourne for this particular flavour, rich in the flavour of the real nut, they absolutely nailed this one right! Great food let down by a slack attitude in the kitchen. 20<br/>Minutes to make a salad roll when you are the only customer is just not good enough. Plenty of staff in kitchen; you could hear the laughter. Management needs to kick some butt!
Bopnbeep
Stopped by for a pre-show gelato and was tempted by the specials on offer; hot cross bun or white chocolate, raspberry and pistachio. I opted for the white choc and raspberry option but was disappointed by the lack of raspberry, there wasn't any trace of it in my generous scoop. It was still good but not as advertised. Should have stuck with salted caramel.
Foodie Panda
came here for the first time with friends and safe to say, the gelato did not disappoint! i had 2 flavours of gelato - salted caramel and pistachio. the gelato is packed with flavour and were not too sweet.<br/><br/>would definitely be back again to try their sandwich options!

If you're grocery list consists of ice cream, cheese, bean-to bar chocolates, and quality produce & oils, you should definitely do your shopping here.  <br/><br/>Out of all the gelato joints that I have visited in Melbourne, Spring Street Grocer has consistently put out delicious flavors.  Their gelato has that classic gelato creamy consistency that most gelato makers strive for.  As I prefer to eat my gelato out of a cup, I can not give a fair review on their waffle cones.<br/><br/>Inside, you can find produce and dry goods that are higher in quality.  Their selection of bean to bar chocolate is also quite extensive although they do not carry my favorite brand.  <br/><br/>The best part is the underground cheese cellar.  They have a wide selection of cheeses that are absolutely delicious.  It is run by two very experienced cheesemongers (one of which was supposed to be competing for the MOF for Cheese in France).  Check it out!
Sher Win
Smooth and creamy. This is definitely a place to fixed that sweet or even savoury cravings of yours. Check out on their weekly or daily special flavours and get yourself to try some of the unique flavours. My favourite remains to be dark chocolate.
Emma
Since I was introduced to this place I've been going there every day. The sandwiches are out. of. this. world. SERIOUSLY. Every single flavour I've had so far has been mind blowing. They also have a great selection of homemade + imported juices, along with the fresh deli produce, other imported goods - and gelati out the front as well as fromagerie downstairs. I love everything about Spring St Deli. It's my place to retreat on my lunch break from work (highlight of my day!)
Penguineats
The hazelnut gelato was quite pleasant, though not amazing. The hazelnut flavour was present and forward, though lacking in aftertaste. The wafer cone was rather lacklustre. While it was extremely utilitarian in design and made it very easy to scoop ice cream, the effect was akin to the cheap waffle cone at McDonalds.
Huk
I always stop by when I'm in the city and need an icecream fix because they serve the BEST ICECREAM EVER! No flavour can do wrong. They're all delicious. A must try is their pistachio. Hands down best pistachio flavour I've ever tasted. Would recommend 10/10.
Teh Omnivore
Seriously fabulous gelati and sorbetti, and they are happy to give you a taste before you choose your flavours. My only warning is that if you are visiting with a three year old who wants 'rainbow' icecream you might need to be a bit creative, as there aren't really any 'gimmick' icecreams here - just a range of really interesting flavours. I tried the coconut and sesame, and dark chococlate sorbetti. The child in question was finally satisfied with mango passion and chocolate gelato - the only bits she didn't eat was that which ended up on her shirt...
Eggcelent Eatventures
The ice cream at this place is some of the best in Melbourne. They make them fresh wash day and the flavours depend on what is in season! Love this place, highly recommends their hazelnut gelato 👌
Kell
Spring Street Grocer is an absolute delight. I love that they stock quality goods such as local organic sourdough loaves from Zeally Bay and imported crackers and mustards. However, there are two highlights of this Grocer that I absolutely love - the amazing selection of cheeses from all around the world located in the underground cellar, and the delicate and unique flavours of gelato from the gelato bar. My favourite flavours are the pistachio and ricotta & olive oil. This is one of the best places to get gelato in Melbourne, I must say! I'll forever be a returning customer for the house made truffled Brie too.
Christina
I have died and gone to heavennnnnnnnnn ( as long as i took my credit card with me cos this shit aint cheap!!) But OH SO WORTH it! I paid 35.00 for a packet of caramel lollies.. yes I did. And I ain't afraid to say it!!!!
Michele Walton
But my highlight is the icecream. Flavours are unusual, but delicious, like salted caramel and Wattleseed, citrus and yogurt, cardamom and pistachio. Open everyday until late, it’s my go to spot for Melbourne CBD icecream. Write your thoughts here Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. Fill in your details below or click an icon to log in:

A large selection of Ice cream variety. It's smooth and creamy, can't complain. I chose Coffee, pistachio and salted caramel. The flavours are spot on and taste good. Ice cream is Ice cream to me however just wanted to give this one a try, as per usual the cost of per serve is expensive, great on a nice warm day.
MelbfoodCritic
It's basically a gourmet supermarket with simple bread, soups, (juices/ smoothies but bottled) , cheeses & other stuff in it. Kitchen closes around 3 so it's pre made stuff after that. Used quality ingredients, possible from the own store? Staff friendly & willing to assist. Gelato was good....

Came to this place when we didn't have time to detour to N2 before Matilda, and am I glad we did!<br/><br/>An interesting and unique mix of flavours, the lovely man at the counter suggested the goats milk, olive oil and grapefruit zest. While I was slept oval, I got it, and was delivered to ice cream...
Beng Lim
We picked the hazelnut and orange w/ mandarin flavoured ice cream. The hazelnut was super creamy and delicious. The orange w/ mandarin... not so much.
KAZUKITA
Tried the ice cream here and it's absolutely Amazing. The ice cream is soft, creamy and It's literally mouth watering. Flavours is also very unique. Highly recommended this place. You will not be disappointed.
Ange
Had pistachio gelato($5) after sampling the cardamom and toasted pistachio gelato and apple and cinnamon sorbet. All flavours good, slightly on the sweet side for me personally. Texture was perfectly smooth, not icy at all. Would have preferred the texture to be slightly more solid as gelato melted very quickly, even on a winters night. Would be great if they uploaded their menu on a more frequent basis, ideally daily as I'd come for a flavour that was on their menu a day ago but the menu has since changed.
Tony
Best gelato/ice cream in Melbourne, hands down.<br/><br/>They have all kinds of flavours so be sure to give a few more unique ones a try before settling on a flavour. Also attached is a very well stocked grocer that harbours a basement cheese pantry. Exquisite.
Generous Serve
Checked the delicious mouth-watering meals/baguettes/sandwiches and drinks, as well as ice-cream available after dessert...rating 4.8 on here...sold! Off we walked several blocks after gym to smash some food down. Ordered the kangaroo and Cuban and was politely told that these were not made of a Sunday and the pre-made ciabattas, foccacias etc, that were made earlier in the day were sold out. All good, we ordered and paid for what was left -one pumpkin, one salmon baguette and paid for an $8 water (!) and started scoffing. We then realised we preferred our baguettes to be toasted. Approached the wait staff at the counter to ask for this and was once again politely refused. the chefs didn't work on a Sunday, kitchen was closed and therefore the grill couldn't be used. <br/>Moral of the story, don't go here on a Sunday.  Kitchen closed/ parts of the menu not available should be advertised more clearly.
Espresso&Matcha
On our way home after the delightful French dinner, we noticed a bright neon Grocer sign, bustling with patrons. Having the impression that grocers would normally not be open that late at night, we were intrigued. It was only after noticing the bright Gelati sign in the corner that our curiosity was satisfied.

If you're a fiend for Gelato or Cheese, you'll love this quirky lil' grocer.<br/>Safe to say this is the best place for Gelato in the CDB easily, comes relatively quite close to Messina in my books.<br/>Came here for 'second dessert' after dining at Mamasita's, did a little circuit around the grocery store inside and then deciding upon what the flavours of this night would be.<br/>Though possessing a smaller flavour pallet than Messina, the regular and specials menu are more than satisfactory for any ice cream craving individuals.
Siyou
Cute place! I really like here for the warm atmosphere and friendly service~ groceries here are all attractive and many homemade juice, bagels, and jams…many unique flavors of the ice cream, and taste all good!
North Fitzroy Food Addict
This is one of my favourite places for gelato. I love their unique flavours and also that every time you visit there is something new on the menu. I have never had a flavour that has disappointed me. If you're in doubt they are happy to taste test you a flavour before you commit.
Charlie C
The service provide by d gal at the counter was so horrible! And I checked with her which flavors are vegan, she told me they are all vegans. That sounded great to me but I'd hardly believe so I did reconfirm with her again.. She confirmed n said yes. Hence, I ordered their Pistachio & Hazelnut flavors and I'd tell they were made of dairy milk definitely! I'm damn angry about this gal and the horrible service provided from the beginning!!! How cud she simply tell us all flavors are vegan!!!! I'm damn mad and I'd definitely won't return and warn everyone I know NOT to visit your store! Not just horrible service but being so dishonest and disrespectful!!!!
James
Cheese, cheese and more cheese. Wonder down the spiralling staircase into their cheese cellar and prepare yourself to sample some truly delicious cheese. It's dangerous, because you will spend a lot on cheese, but it's such a great little place in the CBD to visit. I make the effort to go at least once a month. I haven't even touched on all the produce upstairs, there's a lot of different jams, dips, quince, crackers just to name a few. Plus the ice-cream is amazing :D
Cora Chen
In the match up for Brisbane versus Melbourne, we have definitely lost on the gelato category. The pistachio gelato I tasted from Spring Street Grocer was one of the nicest things I put in my mouth this whole year. Now, that isn't fair. Why can't we get something on par in our city?
Gee
The cheese cellar. It's amazing, and whoever is working there is always so knowledgable and helpful. They've changed the hours so it closes earlier now which isn't cool for locals, but regardless, the cheese selection is amazing and you can sample a few. It's definitely not cheap, but everything is at the perfect temperature to eat.<br/>The ciabatta's upstairs aren't bad either. Really didn't like the gelati at all - but that's just my opinion.
Andrew R Buchel
Had sandwiches here for lunch. Prices not too bad for what you get and taste was good (had egg aioli and beef with mustard). <br/><br/>Staff was pleasant enough.<br/><br/>True to its name, this place has a wide range or artisan products ranging from sauces, breads, cheeses and meats.<br/><br/>
Raya Jenie
it was a hot day and we opt for this place nearby our airbnb that got some great reviews on their gelato. My son had the mango and he finished his whole cup in a heartbeat! My husband and I had the pistachio & salted caramel and they were divine. The pistachio in particular is what gives this review an extra .5
I Am Cheng
We tried 3 flavour of the gelato, the plain flavour, saffron and chocolate. For me the saffron flavour is the best. Love the texture of the gelato, smooth~ the staff is friendly too!

Chill Melbourne Whitenight, just have to find some coffee and Gelato. <br/><br/>8/10 - Based on the queue of people at 21:00 <br/><br/>6/10 Based on their $6.80 Affogatto.<br/><br/>Yes, we will try more next time

Spring Street Grocers is one of the few options open for a late-night treat in the city. Glad we took a punt to check it out as the gelato was excellent. I tasted three flavours; though the coffee and hazelnut were both delicious, I settled on the pistachio. My scoop of pistachio was super smooth and creamy, reminding me of the ones I had in Rome. The gelato are stored in metal canisters and staff are generous with the testers. Aside from the classics like chocolate and fior di latte, they also have some unusual ones like salted caramel and chilli, coconut pandan and chestnut. Currently ranks as one of my favorite gelato places.
Ivy
Gelato's are excellent...the customer service of the girl serving us is not. Just when is it ok to serve your customers with the side of rudeness. I'll come back once the person have learnt manners.
_simplypeckish
1/12/2015<br/>After reading countless review on how great the their gelato was, decided to give it a go. Had the cardamon pistachio and salted caramel gelato. Amazing! Probably better than Messina. <br/><br/>5/12/2015<br/>Tried the matcha flavour as it was the special of the day. Way too sweet for my taste.

Ice cream excellence. On a hot Melbourne summer night, what a pleasure it is to have a lazy wander up Bourke St and watch the city slow down. What makes it perfect is sitting on the steps of Parliament watching the sunset with an excellent ice-cream in hand. <br/><br/>Spring St Grocer has only been around for a couple of years but it's already a must do destination. You can pick up groceries and fresh juices but the gelati are why l keep coming back. On this occasion l had a splendiferous special - pineapple, lime and chilli. Asian holiday meets Italian sweet - sensational. My friend is more of a purist when it comes to gelati flavours. Her salted caramel and chocolate scoops were no less fantastic though for their broader appeal.<br/><br/>SSG isn't cheap ($5 for one scoop; $7.20 for two) but the product isn't ordinary either. We managed to arrive at a lull, having spotted a minor celebrity with one of their cones on the way up. A few minutes later, as we were luxuriating on the stone steps, the lines snaked out the door. That adulation is much deserved.
Mrs Mark
Although pricey ($7.20 for a double cone), the gelato was superb.  I had the pear and lemon sorbet which was light, refreshing and just what you feel like on a warm summer's day.
Melbourne Glutton
This is a little grocer nestled near the Paris end of the city, right opposite the grand facade of Parliament House. It sells beautiful gelato out the front, stocks everything from matches to matcha powder, and houses one of the best cheese shops in its basement (more on that another time). My favourite picks are the fresh juices and the ready to eat meals from the fridges.
MelbourneBee
Gelato, coffee, sandwiches, deli all amazing at this beautiful European style deli. A true Melbourne institution. Check out the cheese shop in the cellar. Awesome.
Alcobon
Attended a function here in the basement, which is perfect for small gatherings. Fantastic venue, great service but the food is the standout.
Melbourne Epicure
Awesome little delicatessen shop with a superb cheese shop downstairs, the usual suspect selection of imported goods like special paella rice, fish roe, cured meats, etc.<br/><br/>They have awesome sandwiches for lunch. I had the Cubano and though not a traditional Cubano, their version is delish! They seem to use like an Italian Olive pickle instead of cucumber dill pickles and their pork is not your standard grilled pork either but it is absolutely awesome. And with a nice kick to them too! They are not large though so either get a side of crisps or order two!
Sweet And Sour Fork
Although most people are probably familiar with the artisan produce and gourmet gelato of Spring Street Grocer, I imagine not everyone knows about the cheese basement. Hidden amongst the tottering piles of groceries is a secret staircase, spiralling steeply into a cool room and an old-fashioned cellar. The smell was what gave it away. Just halfway down the stairs, we were submerged in the musty, hazy aroma of a thousand ripening cheeses. I made it to the bottom to find that all my dreams had come true. Spread across three tables were French cheeses of every type you could possibly imagine – sweet and waxy comté, crumbly and stinky blues, ooey gooey fromager des clarines, pungent orange wash-rinds, and of course, the king of cheeses – enormous rounds of brie made with 75% milk fat. Given that there are over 1200 types of cheese in France, what I’m seeing here is but the tip of the tip of the iceberg. Still, my stomach was more than satisfied; here are some highlights:
The City Lane
Located under the Spring Street Grocer, the Spring Street Cheese Cellar has been delivering a wide range of farmhouse and artisan cheese sources from both local and overseas producers since 2013. This underground gem offers Australia’s first underground cheese maturation cellar as well as a basement space which can be booked for cocktail parties and dinners.
Nithya Nagarajan
Artisan gelato in unheard of flavours up the front, pantry essentials and luxuries that pay respects to the verve and variety of local and international tastes, a no-fuss and fantastically fresh sandwich bar, an underground cheese cave offering an alarming choice of hards, softs and blues AND a function and warehouse space. Spring Street Grocer is an absolute blessing in disguise to Melbourne's CBD!
Jonathan Leow
Ice Cream. Had the coconut and pandan, then went back for the pistachio, then went back for mango. It was amazing. Super rich, creamy and delicious, get there early before they sell out.
World In A Bite
While the ice cream were delicious, the customer service was poor (maybe just on that day?) ... I think this place is better than Messina - Messina is super sweet , full of sugar. The only thing that attracts people there is interesting flavours. Anyway, this ice cream place also is a grocer for food shopping.
Dene Robert Lockwood
Opening hours were listed at 8am to 10pm, but I arrived at 10:30pm to find the helpful staff at Spring St Grocer still serving gelato to groups of happy customers! Although there were a lot of choices on offer, I decided to go with my usual choice at Gelato spots; One scoop of chocolate and one scoop of hazelnut. The chocolate wasn't too sweet, and had a rich chocolate flavour. The hazelnut was perfect! Rich hazelnut flavour with just the right level of sweetness. Highly recommended.
Khana
After a very satisfying dinner, we went in search of a delicious dessert, and a quick Zomato search revealed that Spring Street Grocer was the ideal choice!. I couldn't resist the gelateria at the front, and chose a mango lassi gelato, which intrigued and delighted me! It tasted exactly like the namesake drink, and even had the unique sourness that lassis have. One scoop in a cup was definitely enough to leave me very satisfied. My friend tried the salted caramel flavour, which he also immensely enjoyed.
Chisyelda Oey
Amazing salted caramel gelato! The best I've ever had in Melbourne. Even better than 7 Apples' and Pidapipo's salted caramel! The price was okay, $5 for a scoop. I've never tried the other stuff but their gelato gets 5 out of 5 for me!
Vee
This place has the smoothest and airiest gelato in Melbourne with the most unique flavours. From whisky and thyme, coconut water and lychee, basil and lime, every creation here is amazing. I try to come here every week to check out their weekly flavours. That's how good this place is.
Karma Clarke
What a gem of a grocer. Everything here looks beautiful and tastes amazing. As you step up to the grocer you are greeted by the best gelato in the CBD- such interesting flavours (buffalo cheese with candied clementines, pineapple, Apple and mint...) and made to a very high standard. <br/>Walk in further and you find a mini grocery with local products as well as imported. A very gourmet and classy selection of goods. <br/>Towards the back there is a drinks display filled with stylish lemonades, and juice pressed freshly on site. They also sell baguettes that look yummy. <br/>In the middle of the store there is a small winding staircase which leads you to an underground cheese cellar and a restaurant. <br/>The cheeses are spectacular and come from all over the world. The cheesemongers are extremely knowledgable. I couldn't resist buying some delicious goats milk cheese. <br/><br/>This place is well worth a visit whether you are a tourist or a local. You won't regret it!

This is one of my favourite places in Melbourne! They stock only the best produce and products. Knowledgeable staff, especially if you enter the cheese dungeon (my favourite). Ice cream is a must!

Average. The gelato is alright... Today i had the pear and amaretti and the pear was icy and the gelato lacked a bit of flavor. Not dissimilar to the pistacio. Maybe it was all soured because of the utterly unenthusiastic and unfriendly guy serving today. And the fact one meagre scoop is $5. Either way I'd rather travel to messina for my gelato

I love that we have a grocer like this in the CBD. If you don't have much time then you must grab one of their gelatos. These guys make some seriously authentic and delicious gelato flavours! The pistachio and saffron is a must try! They also have a yummy lunch menu and some stunning treats to pick up from indulgent chocolates to fresh bread to all things you would want to make a beautiful antipasto plate. We will be back for sure!

Did I say yum? This low key little cute spot has one of the best ice creams in melbourne. The flavours alone will leave you drooling but the pistachio saffron and orange was absolutely amazing! Whole bits of pistachio in it and the orange and saffron enhancing the flavour so much more. The kangaroo on dark rye is also a treat with perfectly cooked kangaroo with a beetroot relish!

We rocked up here at 9:30pm on a Sunday night and the staff were very friendly, on a cold winters night they had their heaters going on which helped us prolong our stay. It has its own organic grocery store but the main attraction was definitely the ice-cream. We got the hazelnut and tasted like kinder-bueno in a cup. Had we come earlier we wouldn't have missed out on more options. Great place.

Love love love! <br/>cute little grocer next to the theatre with a cheese cellar underground and a gelato bar up top. What more could you want?

I’m a bit of a politics fan and there has been a fair bit of drama in the Victorian Parliament over the last week with the expulsion or suspension of an MP and the prospect of a deadlocked assembly. For a couple of days I spent some time in the public gallery watching events unfold. Both days I needed to queue to get in. Parliament has never been so interesting!

Ok not sure why the haters are hate hate hating, but this is my go to for gelati. By far the winner in my books. Freshly churned flavours, changing daily. And hey, if that doesn't tickle your fancy, they have a room of cheese. A room. Of cheese. Go there. Right now.

I don't get the hype here. It's expensive, the gelato is good but nothing amazing, unless you work in the city it's a pain in the butt to get to and again because it's expensive I don't get it. Great concept, location, renovation and timing. <br/><br/>Coffee isn't great, food is ok. Not sure what gives it a 4.9 out of 5... <br/><br/>It's amazing how the right people and marketing can make or break a business, in this case make one, and without massive substance. So many other places do the same better, without the cost and without the stigma. But it's successful so without sounding picky or just rude I will leave it as 'a good place to visit and experience'.

Spring Street Grocer has a cult following among foodies in Melbourne for its amazing gelato but seems to have somehow remained under the radar of many.<br/><br/>The aforementioned gelato is amazing - properly creamy and one of the best I've ever tried anywhere in the world. The quality of ingredients and focused range of simple plus unique flavours is sure to keep anyone in need of a gelato fix happy.<br/><br/>Go downstairs, and the cheese room is also one of the best in Melbourne, containing a wide variety of cheeses from Australia and abroad, with there always being someone behind the counter who can help you find the exact cheese you are looking for.<br/><br/>Spring Street Grocer also offers a range of other food options to take away plus, as the name suggests, a range of higher end grocery items - like and upper end Italian deli of sorts. On the pricey side yes, but a great little shop nonetheless.

I go there once or twice a week for their amazing ice cream! A bit tight on the serving size but worth it. I have reccomended this place to many people!

I love visiting Spring Street Grocer. The best gelato/sorbet I've ever had. Every time, it's delicious. The flavours are interesting and different every time. The chocolate orange and lemon are my two favourites. Fresh juices are also really good. And the cheese room downstairs is so cool! Staff are always friendly and helpful. Definitely worth a visit - especially for tourists as the whole place is just really cool.
