Review Bluetrain - Melbourne

Mark Thompson
A great location, with really scrumptious food. My eighty year old Mum really loved the burger! And the no. 7 pulled pork pizza was a light crust sensation! Definitely worth the visit 😁👍
Scott Puddy
Decent selection of Italian influenced menu. Food was lovely (paella and chicken curry) but service is very slow. Hopefully they can get back to usual speed as people get back into the city.

Great location, wonderful service and amazing ambience. Good place to go with family and friends or after work drinks. The only negative is too much salt for my taste. We ordered few dishes Bruschetta, Arancini, Salmon, Paella and Chimchurri Steak everything except Arancini had excessive salt.

I don’t know about you, but my memories of Bluetrain go back to the early 2000’s. It was a great place with an awesome vibe, extensive menu, a casual place to go and hang out before a movie or show. Last night for old times sake, thought I would check out Bluetrain before heading to Hamer Hall. Unfortunately, like many places, it seems that Bluetrain has lost its charm and heart of what was. We were ‘greeted’ by a wait staff, who basically did not even appear to be an employee… dressed so casually - as though he was going to be kicking back at home and his manner came across as aloof and as though we were causing his night to be a chore. Sadly, the menu is now somewhat limited, and of course prices whilst you would expect to have been more expensive than in previous years, they are ‘boutique’ prices - and possibly echo of costs of location and mirror other restaurants in the same locale. Other wait staff were ok, food was decent and timely. So maybe if you’ve never experienced the Bluetrain before, you may enjoy your experience. But from one patron looking to take a trip down memory lane; to Bluetrain I will simply say “thanks for the memories”.

Catching up with friends and Bluetrain great casual place to meet. Dinner for 5. Shared garlic cheese pizza and basil pesto bread with salami. Mains vegetarian linguine, chargrilled chicken, veal burger, pizza with tomato and vegetarian gnocchi. Oh and chips because no meal is complete without a side of chips!! Drinks red wine, sparkling, sprite, coke, flat whites and soy latte. However when arrived ordered soy latte and for reasons unknown it took 20 minutes to arrive. Also am I crazy but when wait staff come to see anything else required etc why do they never take the dirty dishes away?? It is so so inefficient and I never understand it. However food overall was excellent only criticism, aside from service, was garlic cheese pizza lacked cheese and the tomato cheese pizza could have done with bit more tomato. So would recommend as great place to catch up with friends or to go to before you see a show as we were asked that and at 7.30pm the place emptied! But unfortunately it does mean that you do have to wait for your meals so that all the theatre goers can be served first even if they have come after you. Bluetrain is an institution and everyone has to go there at least once. 9.7 4 of us for lunch. Shared garlic cheese pizza which was a big improvement on last one we had here. Mains 2 vegetarians had Nacho Libre burgers, while 1 gnocchi and 1 calamari. Wanted decaf soy latte but no decaf so decided to live on the edge and have normal caffeine!! Note chips were excellent.

One of my favourite places to go, great staff, amazing food and view if southbank is just breathtaking however, this time, they decided to close the kitchen at 1945 and forced us to either order before 1930 or we had to leave. It was a special occasion for me that day and ither restaurants wouldn't take us due to it no reservation so we ended up leaving without eating, and had only drinks and snacks. At this level, we weren't expecting this sort of treatment as they said today its too slow day to keep the restaurant opened.

Nice place that overlooks the river. I will definitely suggest that book a table before you visit as this place is packing. The food menu is nice and wide. Had a good variety of finger food and mains. The pizzas and pastas are great. The variety of mains available makes it a good place for a group of people with a diverse pallet. The house beer brews, the cocktails and the house drinks options are pretty decent. There are different sizes of beer servings that you can choose from. The cocktails are pretty good as well. Overall, a nice place to hangout in the evenings.

Great place for groups and before the theatre. Loads of choice. Burger, pizza and share dishes like boa and spring rolls... then and the churos for desert!!! Keeps everyone happy

Very poor everything food atmosphere do t think the staff a very happy. Sent my food back as it was supposed to have a wine jus but tasted like soy sauce could not get vegetables with my steak $32 had to pay another $8 could not wait to get out of there. Does not deserve any star
Roslyn Laurie
Fantastic family restaurant, very helpful and friendly staff and the food was deeelish, even the kids menu was great with very appropriate portion sizes which I really appreciate!! Thanks for a lovely dinner!!!

A good quick, delicious meal, excellent for pre theatre, football, concert. Been coming to blue train for many years and never been disappointed. Delicious menu option, great drinks, staff always attentive and friendly. Came in last night after theatre before our drive home, busy time, footy at MCG, lots of families. Waited 10 mins at the bar and taken to our table, can't fault that, great Melbourne/South Bank institution.

Sorry to say the experience here has really gone down hill. I used to rave about Bluetrain but I won't be now. Disappointing to pay $39 dollars for steak cooked averagely bordering on over cooked with under cooked potatoes. Service was excellent however it just couldn't make up for the disappointing meals.

First time here with the family and we loved it. Great food, view and atmosphere.I really enjoyed the miso salmon. It was cooked to perfection.
Richard Oxford
Great service (Harriet from Manchester) fantastic food and reasonable prices.......highly recommend
Louise Catherine Thomson
Great meal - very quick for kids who loved theirs and ordered more! It is over priced as I used to eat there many years ago as it was the go to place for a good inexpensive meal.
Joanna Stefanoudaki Hargreaves
Good spot, friendly staff, excellent service, good meals, good prices ideal to bring the family Sunday afternoon.
Chris Townsend
Great place to eat and catch up with friends over a drink, also the staff are fantastic, well done.
Eddie Drohomirecki
We had 9 ppl to feed and these guys had no trouble whatsoever fitting us in without a booking! Service is excellent and attentive, generous kids menu. We ended up with the Greek platter and pizza, both delicious. We'll be back! Thanks again BT.

Spent New Years at bluetrain and absolutely loved it! Amazing food, good service and location was perfect to watch the fireworks. Highly recommend and will definitely be returning!
Michelle Tremellen
Coming from the country to the big smoke, this place had wonderful service and the food is beautiful.
Sue Morrey
Service great, food was fantastic. Prices good. If there was a very small thing was the music was loud which made people talk louder and that made it very noisy. I'll always keep coming back👍🏻
Karen Foster Cuthill
Had the seafood hot pot I personally could have made better and was over priced
Georgie White
Stopped in for lunch and had problems with what was on the menu being available. The recommended chicken burger was grey. The dahl was sour. The mousaka was nice.
David Boi
Shocking restaurant. Not the same place we remembered from a few years ago.
Foodaholic
Too expensive for the food you get served. There’s meat/fish dishes there that are over $35. Better to dine at Waterfront and you’ll get the BEST quality fish/steak. If we knew we were getting just one handful of salad in a massive bowl and paying over $24 for it, there’s PLENTY of options on Southbank that are more generous. When we approached the Manager he was so unprofessional and rude, a young guy who had no idea about customer service and keeping his customers happy. He kept talking about ‘portion sizes’ and saving money etc...If that’s the focus/vision of your business then your business will close very quickly and you might like to mention the portion size in the salad section and perhaps treat it like an entree because that’s what it was. We all had to go downstairs afterwards to the kebab shop and have kebabs. Do yourselves a favour and DO NOT go to this restaurant!
Stellios
This place is amazing. The food is great and diverse. There is something to eat for everyone. The decor is great. The vibe and friendly staff make it memorable. Most of all you get the great view of Southbank without the hefty price tag. I really think this is a hidden gem and I always take my good friends here. Bluetrain, keep being you, see you next time
Mike_ebiz777
I have been here many times. But I feel the place is not as good as it was. The chair was broken, the windows were unclean and the food was basic and it seemed that they don’t really care. I had fish with chips on the side and salad. The fish was basic and tasteless. The salad was just a bit of lettuce and one cherry tomato. Where is the cucumber and the green and red peppers? <br/>I felt a bit sick later and had indigestion. So I’m again I won’t go back.
Jason Jost
The service was ok and the food was delicious but I found the price was rather high for what the food was. The steak came with chips but then we had to pay extra for our salads. They got bonus points for have a great Kiwi beer on tap.

We dropped in for a bite before seeing a movie and the staff were lovely - very helpful with suggestions that would come out quickly so that we could get to the cinema on time.<br/><br/>We shared the lamb shoulder pizza - good amount of topping and a fresh thin base.  The lamb was nice and tender although personally I would have liked extra cherry tomatoes.<br/><br/>Cocktails are tasty and they have a good selection of beer and wine.  Plus you can't beat the view over the Yarra.  We'd definitely go back again and look forward to trying more of their menu.
Mary
The strangest, most confusing burger I’ve had in my life! Piled on the most random flavours I think one was Brie cheese... it was greasy and just inedible. <br/>Very expensive though for what it was. I won’t be back
Dumba
Great views over the river. Food is good and service is fine. We had the seafood linguine, lamb blackstrap and ricotta gnocchi and enjoyed all of them. Also a good place for after work drinks.
Fiery Sensation
Little bit hard to find. We had a dinning voucher so splurged for lunch . Very kind waiters service quick and prompt . Entree pork spring rolls $16 only 2 but delish. Salt n pepper calamari $17 enough for 2 very delish. Ordered a veal burger and a double trouble burger fantastic $24 each and a glass of kahlua. Total $95 over all experience fantastic
Miss T.A
Delicious filling and juicy burger. Good small amount of chips. A bit pricey. Colourful decor inside. Average service. Waited too long for waiter to take our orders.
The Pet Roo
I have been here many times for pizza and burgers but this time i opted for a more pricey dish, i ordered from the 'Mains' selection and after the great experience i had last week at Sakura Kaiten Sushi, i was still in the mood for Japanese food and the Miso Marinated Salmon caught my eye so went with that. Before i start of the food, every time i have been here there has always been a wait and the good news is the waiting area is right next to the bar so it's a comfortable wait passing the time over a drink or two. Back to the food, my japan experience last year has made me a bit of an expert on what i expect when ordering Japanese and i love the fact that so many japanese inspired dishes are now available at non Japanese restaurants, cafes and pubs. When my dish arrived, my first thoughts were it's a tad small for the $35 i was paying as i was hungry due to the very cold night. However visually the plating was impeccable and i could not stop staring at it. One mouthful and i was in heaven. Everything that was promised was there and more, the seaweed salad, dollops of mayonnaise and fine pieces of what appeared to be lemongrass were all bonuses and unexpected. The edamame beans and soba noodles were delicious and the star of the dish as it should be was the Miso Marinated Salmon, cooked perfectly and a melt in the mouth experience. I was still hungry after i had finished and had to tuck into my friends coconut rice which was awesome. I didn't want dessert, i just wanted more of the salmon dish which is a real testament to the flavours. My friends' who had the Parma Fratellino were not impressed and the clearing of the table whilst one of us was still eating was not appreciated. After he had finished his meal, his plate sat on the table for a good 20 minutes before it was cleared. Anyhow i chose well, a very refined an authentically flavoured dish and highly recommended.

Ordered: <br/>Chocolate Volcano with ice-cream ($9.00)<br/><br/>Review: <br/>Incredibly decadent, the gooey oozing lava cake is a welcome treat to the chocolate lovers. Unfortunately, it was too sweet and too chocolatey for me even when paired with the vanilla ice cream. :( <br/><br/>The interior and personable service was lovely, very instagram friendly with natural sunlight. When you get that much natural light coming through the floor to ceiling windows, the restaurant has a very ethereal feel during the daytime. <br/>Definitely not a bad place to go for a catch up with views overlooking the Yarra.

Attending Bluetrain for a birthday soiree, 11 players joined the game and started proceedings with a boogie thru the expansive Drinks Menu. Loads on offer and smiling faces all round.<br/>Dinner begins with starters. My wife and I chose to share the Thai mussels and were absolutely shell shocked by what was easily the best mussel dish I have eaten in the past 5 years! Other great starters were Bao buns, garlic bread and Duck/shiitake dumplings. Great nosh!<br/><br/>Mains were quick to follow as the kitchen was off-kilter due to the large turnout (so sayeth the staff) and were solid. I chose lamb back-strap along with three others, as the Pork Belly was sold-out. Jus was spot on, Dutch carrots to die for but my fellow diners were unsatisfied with the Yorkshire pudding. Duck Leg was lovely, Miso Salmon was spicy and well cooked. Double Trouble and Veal burger were a solid 3.5 out of 5, with the flavour balance nailed by the sauce.<br/><br/>Unfortunately dessert was not offered so, after graciously allowing split-payments on the bill, we departed for sweeter and more sugary shores!<br/><br/>Great place, nice soundtrack and solid food.<br/><br/>
Bitten Fingers
Went there for a $10 pizza Wednesday night special. They tried to charge me full price of $24 because they incorrectly sat me in area where people eat at a table, not near the bar. Pizza was horrible! Every piece had at least 6 drops of heavy oil dripping off it as you can tell from my photo, base was soggy, tomatoes looked like they were thrown on, couple of lazy squirts of tzatziki and the lamb shoulder fell straight off when a slice was picked up. Did not finish it. Might be worth $10 if in a rush and there's no where else to go but I would never pay $24 for such a mess
Tinmans Treats
I had the corn chip crusted fried chicken burger. I haven't one of these before, so to find one here was a pleasant surprise, and a point of difference. I enjoyed it. The people who I went with enjoyed their meals, although I don't remember what they had because I was too busy eating my 'We're not in Kansas anymore' burg. <br/><br/>You're paying Southbank prices ($24 served with chips!), but with those prices you get some amazing Yarra-side views. Service was friendly. Great interior, lots of seats, kept clean, efficient service.

Bluetrain was one of my go to restaurants whenever I was in Southbank and not quite sure where to dine. Most nights, you’d find a table as it was quite spacious inside. You’d also find something you like on their menu as they served a variety of (Modern Australian/pub style) dishes; from burgers and pizza to salad and Asian meals; they even had a nice selection of desserts and cakes. I’ve tried a few of their dishes over the years and found them to be fresh and quite decent although none was exceptional. Service was friendly, and the view of the river was gorgeous it you happened to be seated by the windows.

A good stable when in need of something that always works well. This casual dining experience will do exactly what you need it to. They will look after you, feed you well and leave you feeling satisfied. With enough of everything and not too much of anything, this place is a go to when in need of some comfort.
Simon Antony
Over cooked tough steak for $30+ but lots of sauce hmm. Everything else was good, nice view, not overly busy. Just about $10 overpriced in my opinion.
Mia.grinch
Went there for a early dinner and was very pleased! The service was good as well as the food, however nothing too spectacular for the price! The drinks were amazing as well as the decor !
Sue Silva
Came in for a late dinner after a show at the comedy festival. Had the GSP platter for 2 and could not fault it. Absolutely fresh and delicious in every element. Friendly staff made it even better. Highly recommend.
Xoxo_cindrella
Food is ok; View is wonderful. Waitresses are lovely. Waiters need training with their attitude and posture with customers. Food is also overpriced. there are other reasons I rated my experience so low. But I rather not say it.
JC
Pull up a seat at the bar and try out some of their signature drinks while you wait for a table at dinner time. They used to do cocktails named after train lines which were awesome! There’s always something interesting to try. Aubergine involtini was absolutely amazing, so flavourful and just melted in my mouth. Couldn’t get enough ★!
Elizabeth Navarro
Great atmosphere. Staff are amazing, especially with kids! Food was yummy and well portioned, we ordered a few entrees- calamari, feta fitters, enchiladas and the lentil Dahl, which were impressive and really excited us for mains. We ordered different mains and some were a hit, smelling amazing. Again, the staff were amazing, their service was efficient!
Steve John
This seafood platter was all I had and it was divineee, and cant wait to visit this restaurant again when I come to Melbourne. The there were other sinful temptations on the menu but sadly was too stuffed by the time i was through with this
Yulz
Food is ok, nothing very special. Ordered few different foods, pizza was ok, lamb burger was delicious, asian beef soba noodle was ok, zucchini fritters burger was good and smoke salmon salad is good. So it's average. But place is spacious.
Maddie Bradley
Great staff, and even better food. Despite me being the annoying and hungry athlete of the table ordering a pasta dish while everyone else got desserts and drinks, my food came within minutes after everyone else's, much to my pleasant surprise. Have been here before and would definitely go back again!

Bluetrain is an iconic venue in Southbank/ Melbourne CBD. Food is amazing and happy hour everyday has my daily visit! Elliot is such a great guy! Always making everyone feel so welcome!

Bluetrain by the very fact that it’s has been open for so many years has become a Melbourne institution. Even despite moving locations a number of years ago the crowds are ever present and wait times for a table can be horrible at peak times and on weekends. They have a substantial menu and the variety is so large I often find it hard to choose and my FOMO is always present. <br/><br/>I find with great regularity that I would get the spiel that “my table was not available yet but if I would like to make my way to the bar area and have a drink I would be called when one becomes free.” This would often just after I had ordered a drink be followed by “your table is ready you can bring your drink with you”. The cynic in me suggests this might be a ploy to get drinks ordered where patrons may not have ordered any. <br/><br/>The food is reasonable and affordable and quite sizeable. I have been here in work groups but more recently had a big family gathering here which was perfect because <br/><br/>a) children involved and it’s a loud space <br/>b) less adventurous eaters involved <br/>3) relatively affordable.<br/><br/>I tend to often order a pizza (lamb pizza and the seafood pizza are tasty) and butmon my last visit tried the chicken burger. I am also a fan of their dhal which is one of the more yummy vegetarian dishes I have had.<br/><br/>The cake cabinet is always a massive draw card but I seldom have room after all my scoffing so more likely to share a slice than eat something outright ( as delicious as they are).
Thalia
Thought it was beyond ridiculous for the pricing seeing as though the serves weren't all that and a packet of chips, as we were there for a friends bday, thy friend supplied a bday cake in which the waiters took and cut up and then brought back and served with ice cream, and to our dismay didn't disclose that by doing this we would have to pay an extra $20 just to be served cake. What a joke. Pizza was dirt too.
LMACIN
Wow this new look Blue Train really disappoints. The new fitout is nice enough, but they are certainly passing on the costs in menu price inflation. I ordered the goats cheese raviolo with asparagus and almonds. The ravioli themselves were cold, bland and cement like, no flavour but smothered in butter. Asparagus overcooked and the whole dish covered with an unappetizing mass of microherbs, shaved parmesan and a chug of balsamic for good measure. To be honest the meal was nearly inedible and $26 is no bargain. For a quick dinner before the show I'll hitting the nearest food truck next time.
Good Food Good Mood
I've been to Blue Train a couple of times in the two decades it's been standing and it's a bit of a Southbank institution. A massive modern space that is always packed with people doing very reasonably priced food, particularly given its central location.<br/>The cake cabinet however is really where it's at. So many delicious looking creations that almost appear too pretty to eat (don't worry you'll get over that) whatever appeals to your sweet palette they are guaranteed to have it whether it be a type of cheesecake or a dense and delightful chocolate sensation. Amazing views are the icing on the cake.
Ann
Have been visiting blue train for many years now and wow they have undergone some serious changes within the past four years. The restaurant offers a very large variety of dishes-from kangaroo to Asian fusion. The dishes are very well presented however sometimes it can be a bit hit and miss here.
Split The Bill
We were looking for a place for a work lunch and decided to try Bluetrain. I have been here a number of times over the years and it has been a bit of hit and miss but today I was really impressed. A very busy restaurant, but that did not stop them providing good service, good sized portions and great flavours. <br/><br/>We tried the following dishes:<br/><br/>Prawn and ginger dumplings <br/>BBQ chicken quesadilla<br/>Kilcoy porterhouse steak with green peppercorn. <br/>B.T seasoned chips <br/>Sweet soy marinated beef pizza <br/><br/>We all enjoyed our meals but the winners of the lunch as agreed by most colleagues were the dumplings and the seasoned fries!! They also have a lunch special of any pizza or burger plus a drink (wine, beer, soft drink) for $20. <br/><br/>We look forward to returning soon to try more!
Tim
Friendly staff, tasty food, South bank prices though! Had a quick lunch at the bar and better than what I expected given mixed reviews. Would suit people working nearby.
ToMaZo
Great place to come for lunch if you work or live in the area. I've been here a few times with work colleagues and the meals have always been great. The 'we are not in Kansas anymore' burger in particular is outstanding. Not sure what herbs and spices are in that chicken patty but it's absolutely delicious along with the American-style sweet bun and assorted salads / condiments. The pizzas are also of great quality, in particular the Pear and Gorgonzola option is delicious. There's a $20 special which consists of either a pizza or burger along with a beer or soft drink which I think is great value.

Arrived in time for happy hour - great view. These were the positive parts of dinner, service was lack lustre, wait staff need prompting I.e could we have some water, could we have some menus, could we order more drinks - yes we know happy hour is finished we would still like more drinks, could we order coffee ? Food was pretty ordinary I ordered the house smoked salmon salad it was well presented but it was pitiful- the salmon seemed tinned, with a couple of soggy over cooked green beans and three half cherry tomatoes- dressing was forgotten but I was secretly pleased as everyone else complained about too much sauce on their ribs. Bluetrain is a lovely venue with great ambiance come and have a drink but eat somewhere better
Kim Wise
on arrival very friendly staff took order made good impression that changed when food arrived - salt and pepper calamari and fish and chips. calamari was greasy and tasteless with salad that was not fresh, fish and chips tasted like was cooking in old oil and soggy chips not nice at all. we were subject to the chef shouting at a staff member dropping the f bomb several times. will never eat there again
Wilburn Quill
The service was impeccable. The staff were pleasant, friendly and gave excellent recommendations. The food was delicious. Used my Liven App and got me a cool $50 bonus! We are looking for to return visit.
Liam.hedge
We had an excellent experience at blue train. Our waiter was attentive and friendly, the food was excellent. I'm quite surprised by the other reviews here.
Mark Herring
Menu heavily advertised as gluten free. After arriving we found out the gluten free options weren't suitable for people with celiac. Disclaimers such as "may contain traces of gluten" weren't anywhere on the menu and this would've made a huge difference. If we had seen this disclaimer on the online menu, we wouldn't have booked. I know they're tapping into this 'low gluten/gluten free' trend however they're misleading people with serious gluten allergies such as celiac. Staff mentioned customers have made numerous complaints about this. Sauce ingredients were pre-packaged store bought, not made from scratch in-house, not really good enough for the prices they were charging. Staff did their best given the circumstances. Unfortunately won't be going back.
Alex
Came with a group of friends for and 18th dinner. Throughly enjoyed the food and the service was pretty good to! Loved the atmosphere, little bit pricy but worth it. I'll definitely be back!
Mi55Bee
Been ordering their pumpkin salad for lunch a couple times now and enjoyed it. Service could be better here and portion could be a tad larger for the price. On the good side you are probably paying for the view and environment.
MISS J B
Awful food. Overly salty. "Cooked" from frozen. Raw chicken. Old limp salad that should have been binned not served. Unhealthy menu generally.
David Lee
If you're looking for somewhere nice to eat on Southbank without blowing the bank, blue train is great. Been here on a few occasions and every time it has been consistent great quality food. Had the 'we're not in Kansas anymore' burger and it was very tasty and was at our table promptly. Service has always been very friendly. Will be going back again no worries!
Chippie
We had the sweet and spicy chicken, salt and pepper calamari and the steak fries. All very lacking in flavour. The chicken was red in some parts...very undercooked. Very disappointing indeed. No need for us to return.
Ktmoh
I like this place. It's view is nice and the design is nice and their food is good. I can't really find anything wrong with the experience. The waiters were really nice and attentive. Overall I would visit again
Kat
I find this place a mixed bag - sometimes it's really good other times its very average. This week was average. Positives were - had a delicious Glen Waverley cocktail and nice beef burger, although a bit dry. Also, my friends enjoyed their steaks and the beef ragout. Negatives - the waiter was so rude, disinterested and inattentive that I felt it dampened our enjoyment of the evening. We had to awkwardly get his attention to order drinks then meals and during ordering, 4 ppl asked for steak with a side of chips and were told flat out no, veg and potato only! I don't think I've ever been to a place that won't let u swap for chips! Scandalous!
Alana Karathanasis
Wonderful experience at Bluetrain! Amazing service, delicious meals and a lovely view to accompany it all. Had the meatballs as an entree, and the skordalia was just like my grandmother makes it! Had the lamb as a main and it was perfectly cooked and tasty. Massive wine list that catered to the needs of everyone at my table. Highly recommend.

Hey! Blue Train is in the middle of 2 Pokestops along Yarra River so if you up to catch some water Pokemon... LOL Well, Zomato is after all a gourmet website, and here come serving the review:<br/><br/>1. Mexican Platter<br/>For: The beef brisket is tender with a full, strong beautiful taste. If you are a sauce-addict like me then you would love the three sauce plus the salsa.<br/>Against: Too many sauce but seriously not enough corn chips and tacos (see photos). We feel like we are wasting the sauce at the end. I would rather pay a little more for the restaurant to add more dips to the platter. <br/><br/>Pork Belly with Papaya Salad<br/>For: the meat is nicely cured and the palm sugary taste is obvious. The portion is very satisfying as well.<br/>Against: the papaya and cucumber salad lack tastes. I couldn't taste any dressing? I think a sourer salad would match better with fatty meat.<br/><br/>Verdict: we finally accomplished the mission of trying all platters and Mexican Platter ranks No.1.
Nory
Omg not good place to go, loud and food was not tasty , for example the duck risotto was only three pieces and I paid 27 dollar to eat all the rice ! Lol Come on !! Who gonna come back again ! <br/>
Vinny
Wow, thought i'd never say this but this is seriously the worse restaraunt i think I've been to in melbourne. With a rating of 3 and a bunch of mixed reviews and thought meh it might be ok, WRONG!!!. I got the peri peri chicken, it was cold, there was a little blood in it and it tasted 0% like peri peri chicken! i also tried my partners steak and it was so tough and hard even though she ordered medium it was ridiculous. And don't get me started on the pricing for what you get, i mean $30 a dish cmon! Would never return and good luck to those who go lol
Matt Taylor
Had the shared seafood platter and a couple of steamed ales.<br/>Friendly and attentive staff.<br/>Very nice food.<br/>I like that they have a separate kids menu and provide crayons to entertain the younglings.<br/>Will definitely be back.

I came here a few months ago with a friend. I ordered the ragu pasta. As soon as I had the first few mouthfuls I realised that the ragu sauce tasted strongly of plastic (I am assuming this was from the plastic container that the sauce was sitting in). The waitress was very apologetic and I ordered a replacement meal, a salad, which was quite tasteless. The coffee was okay. I will not return to this restaurant.

Went to this beautiful restaurant with my wife and son yesterday for dinner. Love the food. Excellent customer service and such a beautiful place to be. Will recommend to everyone.

Thank you Bluetrain for providing excellent service for our massive family get together. We were a large group with children who had not seen each other for quite some time and therefore conversations and table placings were going everywhere yet the young man responsible for our area was absolutely superb in handling it all with patience and a pleasant manner.  Everyone raved about the food as well.  I thoroughly recommend this venue for a relaxed gathering of any size. Brilliant!

Came for brunch. No breakfast options but as with previous reviewer waitress and kitchen were very helpful substituting item. We ordered a Greek fiesta but did not want beef. They gave the lamb and nicely prepared cold squid. Big potion size
Matt
Came for a Saturday night dinner with 10 people. Great atmosphere with music keeping everyone buzzing. Decor is very nice, the lighting in particular we found very warm and inviting. The view was also superb. In terms of meals, the pastas were consistently good. The BBQ chicken pizza was a decent size and delicious. The seafood pizza was disappointing, probably lacked a little bit of garlic. Of the 3 steaks around the table, everyone loved them. The potatoes were also very good but the coleslaw was sloppy all round with the steaks. The salmon salad lacked fillings and was mainly lettuce, more salmon would've been nice. Overall though, a great night. Highly recommend.

I just dined here after completing the R4K 16km and looking forward to a nice feed...only to get one of the most tasteless burgers I have ever eaten! I had the pulled lamb burger that sounded great on paper but tasted like nothing - literally, water has more flavour. The aioli had no taste, the lamb was so bland..the only thing I tasted was the bit of red onion on there. For $25 a burger, do yourself a favour and just go to the grill'd around the corner and get 2 burgers! My dining partners (4 others) all had very little (aka NO) positives to say about this place too. Coffee was okay -that was the highlight of this place!

I use to hear how amazing this place was??? Something lost in translation for sure. To be honest not sure what to say. I am sure my score sums it all up. I have been here one time too many;)

Bluetrain overlooks Southbank and has a funky, contemporary fit out. The dinner menu has a great selection of choices and is reliable - all the dishes we tried were tasty, leaving us with only good vibes. Bluetrain is great for a good feed in a comfortable environment - keep this place in mind if you are having a casual dinner with a group of friends!

This is any easy place to stop in for breakfast, I had poached eggs with spinach and tomatoes. No wait for a table, and the coffee is with good too so that a plus.

Service was swift and pleasant as soon as we had arrived. <br/>The dishes we ordered were delicious but slight small in portion and more on the pricer end. However the experience in general was quite pleasant and we also had an amazing water view. <br/><br/>Read more on my blog: → www (dot) miss-sennnaa.blogspot (dot) com (dot) au/2016/03/melbourne-eats-bluetrain (dot) html

This place is pretty expensive for what it is. The greek platter was really sub-par: holoumi was rubbery and the grilled meat tasted really odd (very oily). The pizza's were pretty good (the prawn one especially) but the burgers were average, as were the chips. A good selection of drinks. My father felt the waitress was a bit snooty but I didnt think it was that much of an issue. The bathrooms are really cool (a bit odd to mention in the review but if you have a look you will understand). Nice location. The desserts used to be really good but I think they have changed their supplier and they are not as appetizing now. Would probably try something else next time.

Terrible food and service, extremely disappointed. Ordered a burger only to be told 45 mins later that they have run out of buns, but people seated after us got burgers. Lamb on pizza tasted like it was old and chewy. Havent had a meal this bad in melbourne in a long time. Should have gone to maccas...

I have fond memories of being a regular diner at Bluetrain in the 90s. When the garlic bread pizzas & chips finally arrived we enjoyed them immensely. All but the chips were a good size. Unfortunately, we were horribly let down by the service. We waited patiently for 45 minutes because it was busy and we weren't in a major hurry. However, when the tables around is (who were seated much later than we were) started to receive meals similar to what we had ordered, we became very irritated. Obviously the waiter had made a mistake or two with our order. Had he admitted this and apologised we would have been happy. You cant walk past a table over and over and not question why they still have no plates on front of them. It took over an hour to get anything out. Unacceptable.

Service here was swift and pleasant; the place was packed and yet our food came to us without much of a wait at all. Food is is slightly pricey but is well justified by the quality. Pasta was succulent with a rich flavoursome sauce, and the pizza was authentically neapolitan with a thin base and juicy toppings. Staff are knowledgeable about drinks, although the cocktail I had (sandringham line) was a little watery.

Food: great, Drinks: great variety and very creative, Atmosphere: great, Music: very subtle, Service: reasonable, Good location with a nice view of the city. Overall very nice restaurant.

Had a really fantastic dinner here last night, service was spot on, table out on the small terrace was just beautiful, great views. Food was lovely, calamari had great flavours with the paprika Aioli, Chicken salad with freekah was superb, also had great wine list.

We ate here as part of a large group.  Everyone was happy with the quality of the food, the range of beers and wines was good.<br/>Only minus was for the size of some of the mains, especially the salmon.  This was a really tiny slice, about 100-120 grams. At 32$, this was way overpriced, and only entree size. Tasted good, but needed to buy a pizza afterward
Casual Diner
Pretty tired looking venue. Carpets are old and filthy. Staff are friendly but it doesn't make up for average food ( we had one of the share platters which was just fatty meat). Kids meals a good size and did the job. Would not go back.

AMAZING!!! Have been to the old one years ago! Brought my partner here for a meal! We were so keen for a seafood platter. After realising it was a smashing hit and everyone snapped it up before us we were flexible to give something else a go! Char grilled prawns with chorizo, and snapper with an Asian style salad and chips! What an amazing meal! <br/>Cocktails! A big hit! <br/>Sammi who looked after us was absolutely amazing! Catered for my allergies to nuts and eggs and gave me much confidence in my meal! We will be back! Great vibes, great food and drink and FANTASTIC customer service! Thanks Sammi for making our dining experience the best it could possibly be!

The most expensive and most horrible food I have ever had in Melbourne! I was really looking forward to trying this restaurant and Horrible pizza and fried junk was all we got. Never going back

Yesterday, I (Bonnie) attended a ‘thank-you’ lunch with some work colleagues. This was my first experience at blue-train and it was mediocre.<br/><br/>We had about 12 people and had the $35 luncheon menu to choose from. As the vegetarian option looked very strange I went with the baked snapper, accompanied with roast potatoes, cherry tomatoes and green beans. It also came with a coriander paste, which I asked to be removed from the dish as I am not a huge fan of coriander.<br/><br/>This dish was average, I didn’t like the potatoes as they had little to no flavour and the fish had bones in it which put me off. Also the portion sizes are tiny so lucky I’m not a big eater because for $35 I would’ve been very disappointed.<br/>My other colleagues had the pork burger and steak which they weren’t too happy about.<br/><br/>Followed by our main was a dessert platter which consisted of various types of cakes. They were bite size pieces which made it hard for everyone to try all the different types. I tried the mint cake which was delicious and probably the only thing I would come back for. <br/><br/>To accompany my main and dessert I ordered a pineapple juice and lemon ice tea. I was disappointed with the pineapple juice as it just tasted like something I would buy from the supermarket, however the lemon ice team was divine.<br/><br/>In terms of service, our food and drinks came out pretty quickly however there was a language gap between us and the staff and they all seemed to be exchange students with not very strong English. However they were polite and attentive.<br/><br/>The venue itself has an awesome layout and the idea of incorporating Melbourne train lines into alcoholic drinks was great, it’s just a shame that the food quality isn’t up to scratch.

I attended a 'thank-you' lunch here with work colleagues and was very disappointed with the whole experience. <br/>The food was not good, the service quality was even worse! <br/><br/>We arrived as a group of 10 and asked about our booing to which the male maĂŽtre d' seemed confused about. He looked through the reservations book multiple times and was laughing while we all stood around looking at him dumbfound! Eventually he realised our booking and seated us. We had a set me u lunch as part of our booking to which, it too the waiters over an hour of us waiting to take our orders, to which we had to initiate by calling over a waitresses. <br/><br/>The staff seemed very disorganised and had to no real understanding of the food or drinks on the menu at all. We were served by a few different waitresses who all seemed to be foreign exchange students; who didn't have a very good grasp of english as we had to repeat our orders multiple times while they looked completely perplexed by our basic orders of pints of cider or beer! <br/><br/>The food itself was less the average, tiny portion sizes for lunch meals, the steak was requested to be cooked as medium-rare but came out as medium-well. The roast potatoes that came with the steak were soggy and the coleslaw was bland.<br/><br/>They brought out dessert platters after lunch which was ok, the platter was just different types of cakes and tarts cut up into pieces, there was not a lot of care taken with the presentation of this platter. We all tried a little bit of each dessert, 3 of them were quite nice which were the chocolate based cheese cake types, while the rest were either too strong and overpowering in flavour such as lemon or mint or the complete opposite and very bland and tasteless. <br/><br/>The venue, interior design and location is really nice, unfortunately it is a real shame that the food quality and service from Bluetrain is so poor.

I've been here twice for work lunches and unfortunately, it hasn't left a strong impression on me. The first time I came here I had a linguine/spaghetti of some sorts (it has been about a year since I first went there) and affogato as dessert. Both of these were quite nice but there was nothing outstanding with the spaghetti. <br/><br/>In recent times, I had the 300g porterhouse steak cooked to medium rare with iced coffee and lemon ice tea to accompany it. We had a shared dessert platter to share among the group. Once the iced coffee was thoroughly mixed with the vanilla ice cream, it was actually quite good. Without the ice cream, it was sort of bitter/strong. The porterhouse steak was cooked more on the medium-well side, so it was quite dry. It was also rather thick in size and there was a large chunk of fat that wasn't rendered, so it was impossible to eat as it was rather hard. The coleslaw that accompanied it wasn't that great either as it was raw, so the after taste was quite strong particularly as there was no dressing on it. <br/><br/>The dessert platter was quite nice and had about 6 different types of cakes/tarts. I usually love sour things but I found the lemon tart to be too strong in my opinion and was rather sour.<br/><br/>The one important thing that this place lacked was the quality of their service. When we walked into the restaurant, the man standing at the entrance had no idea about our booking and all he did was basically laugh as he walked away to look through this big book which I presume had a more detailed explanation of the bookings. Throughout the meal, we had to repeat our orders at times and there were periods where the waitress didn't know what we wanted.

Went here for a Christmas lunch with work colleagues today.<br/><br/>I ordered the Salt & Pepper Calamari.<br/><br/>Sorry, it was very sub-standard. No essence of salt and pepper in the seafood at all (hardly any calamari to boot, for a price of $18) and the smoked paprika aioli was bitter and horrible. It was globbed all over the salad,so I couldn't escape the taste.Apparently it had fresh basil? A few slivers that couldn't even be detected. Only redeeming feature was the fresh chilli.<br/><br/>Thankfully, I also ordered the chips, so I didn't starve to death but even the aioli with the chips just tasted like mayonnaise. <br/>Others were happy with their meals but I won't be going back

I've always had a good time here. Love their chips and happy hour, $4 for a pot which is a bargain. The pizzas are decent too, thin crust and good amount of crisp. Great place for drinks and food that goes with drinks. I need to try more stuff from their menu to be able to comment on normal dinner menu. The negative is the place gets crowded too quickly. Might have rated a 4 if i didn't see so many people from my office. Also the olives on my pizza were too salty tonight. Sorry i forgot to take a pic of the pizza.<br/><br/>Salt and pepper calamari was delicious. Chips like always were delicious. Pizza except for the olives tasted decent. Oh and the cosmos were well made too. <br/><br/>I will return!

Took my dad out for dinner as he used to go there with my mum. Took over an hour for our meals to come out and one was stone cold ($33 snapper, which was below avg and small). All the while other table's food was served, eaten and patrons departed before we were served... Atleast they were apologetic & took 15% off the bill, but we won't be going back.

We tried Bluetrain before going to a show, so it was a little quieter than I have experienced in the past. The benefit was that we had quick service. We really enjoyed the pizza and calamari entree that we order. Nicely cooked and a lovely presentation. The portion were ample and we walked away ready to take on a few hours in the theatre.

"Fresh ravioli", this dish simply rocks. The other items in the menu (burgers, pasta, salads) are super too. Great location overlooking the Yarra. Service can be slow sometimes.. so be patient.

This is such an overdue post I can't even. That's probably gonna be the intro for the next ten posts since my backlog is getting pretty insane, but anyway, we visited Bluetrain when my Japanese friend was here, because her and her mum came here for dinner the day before and loved it. I absolutely loved the interior of Bluetrain, with the windows allowing plenty of sunlight in, a view of the river, and graphics scattered around, it had a hip yet comforting vibe. Oh and the toilet's amazing, make sure you visit it at least once when you go!

Loved the pulled lamb and beetroot relish burger. We also enjoyed the watermelon and feta salad with pomegranate dressing. The homemade lemonade is delivered like a science experiment. It was fun determining how much sugar syrup I wanted to add to the lemon base. I added the soda water to make it a truly refreshing taste. Yum. Great service too!

What started off at the Arbory ended up being way too overcrowded for a catchup and thus the Bluetrain was the best choice. Nestled on the banks of the yarra, this amazing restaurant resides in the Southbank complex. If you can, ensure you get a window seat, because you won’t regret the views. And once you are done looking out, you can then enjoy the view on the inside. I am partial to those light bulbs that show their filament on the inside. And no, I have no idea why I did not take any of those shots. I guess both the company and the views were too engrossing to really think about anything else.

I had the seared eye fillet salad for $21. The beef was tender, juicy and flavorsome. The salad was very nice too. But it was a tad stingy.  I think adding a few more vegies or even a piece of bread wouldn't hurt (-1), I left hungry. Service was slow considering the number of people at lunch (-0.5)

Great food, drinks and service. Prices are reasonable too. Like the variety of food and drinks available. Casual atmosphere. Kinda kid friendly too

First came to Bluetrain about 12 years ago & didn't realise that it was still alive & kicking. Remains to be a no fuss feel good spot in a great location. We kept it simple with beers & burgers what more could you want for a late afternoon meal

We came here over the weekend to celebrate a birthday and the fit out is amazing. <br/><br/>The views are even better. Staff are great and friendly and they have a very extensive modern Australia menu. <br/><br/>We had some chicken tacos to share - a huge platter of chicken, tortillas and condiments that went down a treat. My mother in law had the prosciutto apple and blue cheese pizza and it had fresh cut proscuitto and a crispy base. Hubby had the cheeseburger - a huge portion in a very traditional American way with fries. Then a side of fries and seasoning which were great too. A bit on the pricey side but for the ambience view and service its probably one of the better places in South Bank

Have been here on a number of occasions - the Pulled Lamb Shoulder Pizza is to die for and my girlfriend loved the Veggie Burger (plus the chips were delicious). Also the convenience of paying with Bluetrain's new app is always a bonus - next time I visit I can grab a free beer. Keeps me coming back! Great views of the Melbourne skyline, especially at night. Keep up the good work Bluetrain.

Meals here are always interesting. Modern Aussie - a little bit of Italian - rustic meals ... And for some reason a place I seem to visit every odd winter. Always fun to return. Friendly service.

We were here for an office function and the large group was seated down very quickly<br/>Even though the joint was quite packed. Great customer service as the bloke (African-American perhaps) attending our tables was funny, knowledgeable and a good cross seller. The food took a while to come out since it was such a huge order so no complaints there. The starters were pizzas n we had three a pepperoni, margarita and a veggie pizza. The first two were average but my word the veggie pizza was really good. A must try if you are here. <br/><br/>We then had drinks and mainz. The drinks looked nice although I personally didn't have any but some of the mock-tails looked really nice. The drinks menu is designed very well and uses some interesting names for its drinks. Funny thing was that the quality of drinks was quite similar to the lines they were named after. For example i heard the Frankston line drink wasn't really nice. No surprises there. <br/><br/>Lastly we had the mains, i had the oven baked snapper which was completely overcooked and dry. The sauce the used was overpowering and mainly pesto based as opposed to what was described in the menu. For me that was a big let down. Although in all honesty my colleagues claimed to love the steak. You cant really go wrong with a steak can you? Unless u over cook that too. The pasta I heard wasn't nice either and some lady's food was soo hot that the poor lady had to get a replacement. I suppose with such a large order u win some u loose some. <br/><br/>In conclusion, its a nice place. A bit pricey but its got some got views a nice ambience and above average food. I always rate the place on my experiences and not what others say and therefore i haven't taken into account what I heard from the others.

I had Smoked Salmon Salad and I enjoyed it but the dish is pretty small. In my opinion, I think it's over-priced for $21. I recommend this place :)

Had lunch here on a busy Sunday.  We had to wait 10 minutes for a table and don’t<br/>understand why they didn’t offer us one of the many tables in the bar<br/>area.   My group had three burgers, one pizza and a<br/>prawn pasta dish.  The burgers and pizza<br/>were good.  The prawn pasta dish was<br/>lacking in prawns.  I would come back<br/>here as it was a very satisfying café meal.

We came here for dinner tonight. The staff was very friendly and relaxed. My friend had the pork belly and I had the oven baked snapper. The snapper was over cooked slightly, but edible. The potatoes and beans were fresh, slightly on the oily side. The price for these dishes were reasonable considering the size of the serve and the location of the restaurant. <br/><br/>Overall, reasonable standard.

I usually come here on a Friday after work during happy hour. $4 beer pots are a bargain in Southbank (used to be $3). Coffee is also great from their little shop outside the restaurant during the day, but it gets crowded quickly so take your time if you're going there for it.

Great atmosphere, lovely views out onto the Yarra.  Mediocre service- had to ask for some water about 5 times, and trying to catch someone's attention to take our order was like trying to flag a taxi in a busy street.  Food very average- creative ideas, but tastes not up to standard.  It's a shame, because it really is a lovely space with potential to be better.
Ramieleatsshootsandleaves
Happy to get a window seat to see the autumnal views of the Yarra River and the activities outside it.<br/>Found it to be a pleasant atmosphere. Though it'd be more appreciated if we were served a couple of more pieces of the soft burrito wrap to go with the spicy chicken - we ran out of it before we could finish the chicken and relishes - basically, they could've been more generous, it's supposed to be a share-plate afterall. <br/>Coffee was pretty good.

Ordered the medium rare char grilled steak. It tasted so burned, terrible. The meat feel like rubber and hard to chew. Poorly executed. No more next time.

Service was great, but some of the meal was disappointing. The Ploughmans platter was lovely - however more a demonstration of assembly rather than cooking skills. Kangaroo was very overcooked - dry and tough and we had to leave it. By the time we struggled with the Kangaroo the Calamari was cold, so average at best.
