Review Lucky Penny - Melbourne

Lan Shao
Randomly walk in luck penny, of course based on other people's review, we decide to try. Nice services, staff is welcoming, provides good advices on food! Salmon is very fresh! Good presentation as well! Even it is not very big place, but still feel quite spacious, not crowded!! I am not big fan sitting along the street, it is already narrow as it is! Only view is people walking along and cars driving by, it is much better inside, i like simple decor!!

Lucky Penny has been around a few years, I’ve been here several times – usually for coffee with eggs on toast. I don’t think much has changed with the interior, but it still feels new and current. I decided to try something different and have the green eggs and ham. It was a really interesting flavour combination with the ham hock, apple, wasabi peas, hollandaise and snow peas. All in all, it was pretty good and the combinations worked – my only comment (very minor) would be that the ham was a bit wet so getting through that ham was a bit laborious. I’ll stick to the classics in future, but I’ll always be back for the coffee. Consistent as always.

Super friendly service... great coffee (magic and cap). Had the pulled pork benny and a thai red curry soup special. Both were great! Nice modern decor... good tunes and great location.
Hello. imnikki
With a simple but charming interior, and manned by wonderful waitstaff who made us felt right at home, I knew that I was in for a treat. Quirkily named, The Corned Supremacy was indeed a supreme dish. The clever use of mulberry compote in a savoury dish added a distinct sweetness and tartness to lift the flavour profile, and the lemon myrtle contribute a zingy taste. Further, the richness of the hollandaise and the meaty corned beef was mellowed down by the pickled cabbage. A great play with flavours throughout. Another dish with a name that was bound to catch my eye was the Peanut Butter Jelly Time. What a divine creation the peanut butter foam was. Creamy yet airy, it was unlike the usual consistency of peanut butter but tasted exactly like peanut butter, maybe even better! The Belgian waffles had a lovely crisped outer layer, but sadly a tad dry inside. A minor inconvenient when the rest of the ingredients marry together so perfectly, creating a dish that was full of flavours and so incredibly decadent. I wasn't a big fan of the fresh berries smoothie, as it merely tasted like strawberry milkshake to me and was missing the tang from the yoghurt which was listed as an ingredient. I swapped this with my partner and happily finished his skinny latte instead, which was the more superior drink.

Super unique menu with a cool twist on lots of classic dishes. I got this Shak this time around and you can see, but will be back to try more of the menu. The Shak was worth recommending and the outdoor area wasn’t huge but I was lucky enough to snag a seat ; ). Follow @brunchordiemelbourne if you’d like more brunch inspo. Thanks Lucky Penny

I really enjoyed the place, service and chai. My husband really enjoyed his meal. I ordered the vegan Bento and on paper it sounded amazing but unfortunately wasn't. The vege broth was very salty along with the pickle and kimchi. 3 very different salty dishes along side cold rice and cold mushrooms. It would have been nice if the mushrooms and rice were warm. The tofu was great and warm but together it just didn't go..... We will be back to try other meals! It's not a write off!

I have been going to this great cafe for years. I don't live in Melbourne but having an office down there it is my go to place with the staff. The food , ambience and staff are all five star. The reason i am writing this review at this time is that I saw today on the Outsiders show on Fox , some horrible people are writing bad reviews and giving one stars. This type of person is a disgrace and their reviews should be deleted. Keep up the good work guys and see you next time we are in Melbourne.

The food was really delicious, especially the cures salmon and pumpkin chai tea! Service is absolutely fantastic. Loved being there! Plus, they’ve got a wonderful room upstairs that you can hire for your event.

I recently had my daughters 18th birthday party at Lucky Penny and it was a fantastic affair! Brittany was great to work with and was extremely accommodating. The space looked gorgeous and had great lighting for a daytime function (just what an 18 year old wants for her insta photos!). The food was delicious and according to a few of our vegan guests - the best food they've ever had at a party! Thank you Lucky Penny (in particular Brittany) for a great afternoon!

We booked Lucky Penny for a hen's party, and we were beyond happy with the function! Brittany was absolutely fabulous- she made the whole booking process smooth, provided great suggestions and truly made the whole night memorable for our lovely hen. The food was fabulous, the bar staff were amazing- nothing was too much trouble and all of the guests commented on how fabulous it was! I would truly recommend Lucky Penny for any event- again, thank you Brittany and the team!

I had my 30th birthday party at Lucky Penny and it was fab. Brittany was so nice and easy to deal with, the space was awesome, the food was really good quality and the night went really smoothly. Would definitely recommend the space to anyone. Thank you Lucky Penny!

I had a my wedding at Lucky Penny a few weeks ago and it was wonderful! Lucky Penny is a great venue for small and intimate weddings. The function space has a real quaint and rustic charm, even though it's indoors. This meant we had a beautiful space to work with, whilst not being beholden to the weather! You never know with Melbourne! Brittany and her team made sure that everything went smooth and were very accommodating. I highly recommend throwing your engagement party or wedding here. The food was yum, so order more food than you think you need as guests will eat every morsel!

We recently selected Lucky Penny to host our sons 4th birthday party. from day 1 Brittany- our event manager was friendly, helpful and very accommodating of our needs with regards to Kids and dietary restrictions. On the day we had ample time and freedom to set up the place and decor to our taste, the delivery of food on platters was quick and efficient, all the guests loved the food, the bar was well equipped and had a fast turnaround of drinks. overall our entire experience was extremely enjoyable - would definitely recommend this venue for a function.

Amazing locally owned and run cafe with great customer service and fantastic food! Try the burger- its to die for! Service is amazing, they welcome everyone with a smile on their face. The community table in the back of the restaurant is very suitable for just a quick breaky or larger breakfast get together. The function room upstairs is very welcoming and I attended some really fun events up there.

Hosted a Flower Crown class for my best friends Hens day at Lucky Penny and it was a total success. Thank you Brittany and staff for the amazing service and quality of food. Everything was perfect and we all had such an amazing time. We definitely recommend Lucky Penny <3

It had absolutely everything a cafe needs! Epic menu, and that thick bacon was to die for.. paired with a cold drip coffee

Best staff, best food, best coffees! If you're in chapel, must stop here...! (I do...4+ times a week )

Attractive looking cafe in the heart of Chapel St. Fantastic Ambience, friendly smiling staff, a happening place. Lunch today was excellent. The Lemon Thyme Chicken was well cooked, flavoursome, just delicious and well presented. Partner's Pumpkin Lentil Burger was excellent, with the best sweet potato chips we've ever eaten.
Tanya Milazzi
Absolutely amazed by the customer service we recieved and how accommodating they were for my special birthday breakfast. Will definitely be back! Can't thank them enough for the delicious waffles we ate!
Jessica Batt
We held our son's first birthday party at the upstairs function space at Lucky Penny and the space is just gorgeous. Brittany had an idea and solution for all our requests and made the organisation of our event seamless! The food was fantastic - all canapes were a really generous size too. I definitely recommend the venue as it's a funky and unique blank canvas that can be styled so easily according to your event. Thanks so much to Brittany and the team!

One of my favourite brunch spots, and its so close to home. Will be my second kitchen from home. Beautiful food with amazing staff. 10 out of 10 guys!

Husband and I ate here the second day after grand opening for and entitre week until we left Vegas. Food, service and staff was amazing! Highly recommend you try this restaurant. You will not be disappointed. Jenkins - Cincinnati, Ohio

Exactly what Chapel St needed, waiters/waitresses have been awesome - menu actually changes and is always top notch! Keep it up legends!!

<br/>Lucky Penny is the perfect spot to stop for some excellent coffee and fabulous food. With lovely staff and a friendly atmosphere, this fab cafe is definitely a winner.

I popped into this cute little cafe for an afternoon coffee and I couldn't resist a piece of the delicious looking banana bread as well. The display cabinet was full of healthy snacks, and from what I could tell, the menu seemed quite healthy too.<br/><br/>The cafe is nicely decorated, and is conveniently located on busy Chapel Street. I found the staff to be really accommodating, with them offeribg to toast my banana bread. The bread itself was fresh and delicious, with lots of yummy seeds on top. <br/><br/>Lucky Penny is the perfect spot to stop for some excellent coffee and fabulous food. With lovely staff and a friendly atmosphere, this fab cafe is definitely a winner.
Hello. Imnikki
You’ll definitely feel lucky at Lucky Penny. Great coffee, delicious food, warm service – you get the whole package here. The cheekily-named dishes will also get you chuckling, making ordering a fun experience. <br/><br/>Send Noods, a healthy dish comprising of glass noodles and seared beef fillets, is bursting with bright and piquant flavours thanks to the addition of pickled chillies, fresh herbs and sweet tamari dressing. The Croque Madame was a much more naughty dish, absolutely oozing cheesy goodness and was incredibly filling.<br/><br/>The classic smashed avo did not disappoint, and with a name like House Deposit, you know that it’s worth it. The harissa spiced baba ghanoush lent a rich, smoky flavour which went really well with the zesty pomegranate salsa. <br/><br/>Drinks came in the form of an excellent skinny latte, and a super creamy and thick smoothie – the Rodgo Ramjet. <br/><br/>This is my second visit, and I definitely see myself coming back.
Nicole
I kindly asked the waitress what the liquid thing from the bowl was, she said it was “miso soup” 😅. I didn’t need to taste it to know it wasn’t miso soup. There were soy sauce, chilli oil, vinegar and some other stuff in that thing. Anyway, this bento set as a whole was...edible. Oh, and the rice and mushroom were cold.
MelbourneLops
Sweet little cafe on chapel street. Good selection of coffees and brunch dishes.
Natasha
Visit the cafe with a friend and left feeling so disappointed. The coffee is just okay. They overcharged us saying that's because we pay by card, but they didn't tell us in advanced. And when we asked for the receipt, it's only written original amount paid. The surcharge is not percentage wise, but they just round it to the nearest dollar. The staffs weren't so friendly either.

Had a really positive experience at Lucky Penny! The KFC chicken waffles was good and my boyfriend ordered the Shak attack which he really enjoyed. The servers and baristas were really friend and accommodating :)
Ira Felinski
Friendly service, nice coffee and good food. I was disappointed that the “Shak Attack” shakshuakkah did not have baked eggs and instead had 2 small poached eggs on top. the fried chicken and waffles dish was eccentric with interesting flavours (lemon myrtle). Tables put the front are nice on a sunny day

Very nice place on chapel street , so inviting and bright you know its going to be good .<br/>The menu is interesting and has some unique options on it , not boring unlike some stock standard places. <br/>The coffee is quite nice here too . <br/>Must visit with friends , and is a good place for nice photos !
Jes
A bit disappointed, the serving sizes were all too small and definitely much smaller compared to most cafes. The eggs were clearly the smallest ones on the market, and it wasn’t the best poached egg. The slices of toast were quite small and only one piece was served with the ‘House Deposit’, when avo toast mostly always comes with two slices. Overall the service was good, but the quality and quantity of the food for the prices were not great.

I&#039;ve eaten here twice and both times I enjoyed it. The most recent time was a few days ago, where I just got ordered some gluten-free toast with jams. The toast was so good that at first I didn&#039;t even believe it was g/f. (It was). My companion had the shakshuka eggs and she loved them.&nbsp; I&#039;d recommend this place.

A little Gem on chapel st. Lucky Penny never disappoints, great coffee, fresh and interesting food and quite possibly the worlds greatest Banana Milkshake.<br/><br/>Staff are lovely too. On this occasion I had the House Deposit, smashed avo and paoched eggs- made extra special with pickled ginger and miso pumpkin, yum!
Jose Fabres
Beautifully presented food but left very unsatisfied. I got “the house deposit” which was reason enough to get the avo smash. Sadly, although it looked beautiful the taste wasn’t very strong. Big serving of avo and pumpkin but not enough bread for it so it became very soggy and there was a distinct aftertaste which wasn’t pleasant at all. Mate fared a bit better with his dish but sadly, mine was not the best.

ITS SO PRETTY AND CUTE YOU JUST WANT TO SQUEEZE THIS DISH’S NON EXISTENT CHEEKS 🥰 But like a child, the portion was fit only for it 🤭<br/><br/>FOOD: I ordered the Peanut Butter Jelly time and it has ALOT of elements to it which makes it super unique but it’s quick pricey for 2 small belgian waffles and some nuts. $21.50 like daaaamn. I’m not hating on it, trust me. It tasted absolutely incredible! I mean, how could it not? It’s a dessert for breakfast 😂 The peanut butter foam is great for people who like peanut butter but don’t like the heaviness of the regular peanut butter, the belgian waffles were chewy and crispy which was great, the ice cream cone was okay (it’s just a regular ice cream) and all the other elements played well with the dish! But like I said, my only issue was with the portion and if the portion was a tad big bigger, it would’ve been a perfect dish and good for value!<br/><br/>SERVICE: Service was pleasant!<br/><br/>Lucky Penny is a really cute cafe with some really unique aspects to and if you’re ever on Chapel Street it’d be a great place to try! I only came for this single dish so I’m not sure if I’d return but if I do, I’d probably try something else 😂 Maybe order the peanut butter jelly time as a post meal dessert to share 🤷🏻‍♀️ Just don’t order it hungry 🤭

What amazing service from this little cafe on Chapel St. I was served by a super friendly guy who got me a water promptly and my matcha latte was served shortly after - and it was delicious! <br/><br/>I ordered a serve of scrambled eggs, toast and hollandaise on the side. <br/><br/>It was all spot on. Sometimes eggs despite being one of the most simple things to make get over or under done but Lucky Penny have it all just right. <br/><br/>With the bill being around $18 for myself - it was a fabulous place to catch up with friends over the weekend.

Lucky Penny is quite a cute little cafe on the busy street of South Yarra.<br/><br/>Ordered a long black, fresh juice, hot chocolate, a Wagyu pepper with Sircha Slaw, Old Faithful and Netflix and Dill.<br/><br/>A Perfect Long Black, very Refreshing Juice and a Okayish Hot Chocolate is the simplest way to describe our Beverages and Juice.<br/><br/>Netflix and Dill was Foodgasmic, Bowl of Old and Faithful, although high on salt, was D'lish and the Waktu Pepper with Sircha was mind blowing.<br/><br/>Attendants are friendly and service is quick. Portions are decently sized and priced. Decent choices for Vegans.<br/><br/>

The staff were so friendly and the food was amazing. Private function room here was so beautiful and all the food that came out was mouth watering. Thank you so much.

If you’re not feeling that lucky today then spending a penny on it might definitely make you score some amazing food and bring luck to your side.<br/><br/>Lucky Penny is a catchy & busy but yet welcoming venue with a creative breakfast and lunch menu.<br/>Staff are friendly and very helpful, happy to accomodate menu changes and alternatives quite easily. Food also comes quite fast which shows how proficient they are!<br/><br/>My friend asked for a toast with scrambled eggs while I went for their interesting a creative bowl named Taro Reid. It consists of a Coconut & Chia taro bowl with fresh strawberries, kiwi fruit, coyo & watermelon and it was their new vegan summer addition and quite an interesting alternative to the usual smoothie/acai bowl! It wasn’t very sweet and the consistency was quite intriguing for me but I consider to be an enjoyable and filling meal.<br/><br/>I ordered also a Chai Almond & Banana Smoothie that was the try definition of delightful. Consistency was perfect and the taste was definitely amazing - definitely recommend if you are a chai lover and want to take a chai latte to the next step.<br/><br/>I got my lucky penny and I’d highly recommend visiting them if you’re in the area because the menu is very interesting indeed!

One of many great eateries on chapel street! I really enjoyed my brunch here. The menu is very simple with a few unique dishes. However, today I was feeling just your plain eggs on toast. I had broccoli as a side and it was delicious.<br/><br/>My friend ordered avo, ham hock and feta with his.<br/> <br/>Simple brunch done very very well. <br/>Couple things the feta was a small portion for the price and I feel like some sort of green bowl would go really well on this menu.<br/><br/>Quality

Not much really to say. Coffee was very average, the bread was stale, the waffles were absolutely terrible they were so hard and dry and the scrambled eggs were just average. The bacon and poached eggs were cooked well. Will not be coming back.
Rach
Great weekend breakfast. They have an amazing little private dining room out the back of the cafe. They don’t split bills on the weekend. Hilarious menu item titles too!
Friendly Ghost
We went on a week day for lunch. It was pretty quiet which is great for catching up. I loved the coffee and crumpets! Will be back if I was visiting Chapel Street.
Sprinkles
One of my favourite places in Melbourne, the meals are all delicious I can never decide nat I want, but the menu usually changes each time I visit Melbourne! They do the best iced chai lattes, definitely worth the visit!
Shane Riley
Amazing coffee and an ever changing flexible interesting menu. Friendly service. A must visit for the best coffee in South Yarra. Why do I have to write 140 characters tomato?

Saturday late breakfast yesterday. Grabbed a table and watched the passing parade on Chapel St while we enjoyed a coffee.<br/>Our scrambled eggs and waffles were hot and arrived quickly. Great spot for people watching and interesting food
Places To Lunch
Located in bustling Chapel Street down the Jam Factory end, this cafe serves up food for those health conscious granola bowl customers or the choc-orange meringue waffles kind of crowd<br/><br/>I've visited Lucky Penny numerous times over the past 8 months and it has always been a crowd pleaser! They have vegan and gluten free options available so no one has to miss out <br/>If you're vegan I recommend the 'Lucky Vegan' it tastes great and will leave you full and satisfied <br/>If you have a sweet tooth like myself, I'd opt for one of their seasonal waffles accompanied by a salted caramel shake <br/><br/>With an all day breakfast menu and pinneapple mimosas to indulge in, this is definitely a cafe worth visiting for a classic brunch with a twist <br/>Not only are the staff lovely, the interior of the cafe is scandanavian styled and just as lovely!<br/><br/>This cafe doesn't just end at all day breakfast and takeaway coffee, if you take a walk up the stairs, you'll find a beautiful function space fit for any event whether it's an engagement party or 21st birthday!
Food Baby
This is my favourite place to have breakfast. The waffles are unbelievable. I’ve also had the burger there which was delightful. The staff are very helpful and friendly and the energy is uplifting. Great location can’t wait to come back again!
Josefin Dahl
What takes down the rating is the menu. Honestly we both had a hard time choosing bc there weren’t many options at all. The smashed avo is one of the better ones I’ve tried, but I couldn’t find anything else on the menu that I wanted. <br/><br/>However, very nice and easy going staff. Great coffee and smoothies! <br/><br/>Will not be going back until they change the menu.
Daniela Lumbaca
Macho Mexican breakfast with poached egg, superfood bowl with skinny cap.<br/>Absolutely delicious!!! Fantastic service, very welcoming will absolutely recommend and revisit.
Brad Farrugia
Good coffee!! wouldn't recommend the breakfast tacos as they were dry and very basic. Meal lacked fresh ingredients and demonstrated a lack of technique on the chefs behalf. Need to work on their menu.
Avolette
No judgement here for ordering mimosas with brunch!<br/>Coffee was also good.<br/>Tried the Mango Waffles (part of their summer menu - sorry for the delayed review!) and it was a large serving size. Lovely presentation. Perhaps a little too sweet for brunch as I am a savoury brunch girl, but it was a delightful treat nonetheless.
Stuck In Transit
The beginning of the week always calls for something delicious to set the mood for the week ahead. With a few cheeky hours free, I made my way down to South Yarra for a much needed lunch date with a close friend. It was a no brainer when she recommended we meet at Lucky Penny on Chapel Street.
Queen Of Food
The breakfast menu is quite appealing and there's a number of options worth trying. The food was really nice, fresh and the flavours were well balanced. Didn't have that WOW factor but I'd definitely return to try something else on the menu.
Bernie L
Pretty interesting twist for a dessert waffle called apple pie. Great service and yummy tasting dessert. The ingredients all blended in unison with one another. It would be great if there are options of freshly baked waffles instead. Oh I had the upside down cone too. I saw other patrons having burgers 🍔 and hot meals and i reckon it is yummy too. Will Pop by again to try...
Kate
I had the most amazing barramundi breakfast- seriously one of the best brunches I've ever had. All the other dishes here are just ok to quite good, but this was truly lovely.
Nman
Arrived here for Sunday brunch, it was not too hard to get a table and we were super excited by the Chicekn and Waffles as we saw the write up on another site! We ordered the chicken with Waffles and some of the juices. The waffle was too sweet and did not gel correctly with the chicken, the bbq chicken and the pop corn chicken did not work so well either as the pop corn chicken was lacking in flavor and spice. The juice was great and the staff were super friendly and quick. Overall I would not rush back here as it was quite expensive.
Maddie Kingham
Came here for Breakfast today and it was great! We had to wait a little bit to get a table but it was worth it. The service was fantastic, the staff were very friendly and let us know what was happening with our orders.<br/>I started with a coffee Milkshake and Josh got a Cappuccino. Both were good! <br/>For our food, I had the Macho Mexican, which was SO yummy. Even yummier than I expected it to be!<br/>Josh had the Tennessee Waffles with popcorn chicken. He added a side of bacon as well. It was really good! I thought there could have been a little bit more spice in the crumb of the chicken but other than that it was amazing! Both dishes were beautifully presented as well! <br/>This was a great place to come for breakfast, we left very happy.
Alex Simmons
Went here today, arriving at 10.40am and not having to wait was a plus, we were a table of 4. We had to wait around 8 minutes for water service, under par but other than that we have a delightful experience. Our table had a pregnant lady who is also intolerant as well as being allergic to dairy. The ordering process for all was smooth.<br/><br/>When the food came it looked off chops and the taste backed up the presentation. We got waffles of lemon and waffles of apple and both didn't disappoint. Plates were cleaned! <br/><br/>I must say though, the crumpets were a sad face. Too plain on the plate and not enough of them. I have eaten my fair share of crumpets and i could have had just as good at home after a trip to Woolworths. Lemon curb was nom nom mmmmm.<br/><br/>Overall would wife if no better option presented itself.
Janineeeh
Amazing service! I had the barramundi dish and dirty chai. The first time it came out, the fish was undercooked. The guy (not sure if he was the manager) was so apologetic about it and they quickly whipped out a new one. It was delicious! Dirty chai was really good too. The staff (especially the guy that served us) really went out of their way to make sure we had a good dining experience. The guy kindly offered me another drink on the house and I was surprised to find out later on that they took both my drinks off the bill. Thank you so much! I had a great time and would definitely come back x

The smoothie bowls and waffles on waffles here are very good bringing you a refreshing start of the day. I like the Chicken Waffles as it's very special and tasty!

Needed a breakfast in South Yarra and looked up some good places. Lucky penny is rated high and we were not disappointed. People who work here are happy and helpful, providing lovely service. The food was quick to come out and was very yummy! Will definitely return.

Came here for Sunday brunch, I got the superfood bowl with a fresh OJ and a latte. The superfood bowl was absolutely delicious, it was topped with fresh pomegranate, and banana which made it all the more tasty. Coffee and OJ - can't complain, both really good. Even came back later for a second take away coffee.
Lizzy Keenan
Really amazing coffee - rich, strong and balanced. Lunch was a grilled wrap with black beans, char grilled corn, salsa and j<br/>jalapeño dressing. Scrummy. Quick fresh and delicious x

If I had to describe myself in two words they would be 'always eating'. Or maybe it should be 'always hungry' as when I arrived here I was so starving I decided to get eggs on toast with a cured salmon side as well as smashed avo. $6 for the salmon and $4.50 for the avocado + $9.90 for the eggs on a solitary piece of bread was a bit extreme I think but it is representative of the rest of the menu in terms of cost for a complete dish. I just think you have to throw another piece of bread on there at least to give me some perceived value. Two of my friends ordered the chicken from the lunch menu which they loved for the fact they considered it to be very flavoursome yet quite healthy. Food aside the staff were lovely and helpful and the decor more elegant scandi minimalism (yawn). At the end of the day I paid over $20 for my food (no beverage included) and was still hungry enough to get a takeaway superfood bowl so my wallet wasn't feeling so lucky when I had to hand over all my pennies
Hungry Ronin
You may miss this place as you walk past a busy Chapel Street. But LP is worth the stop and brunch here was delightful. The service was upbeat and swift, complementing a modern menu and interior. My salmon with poached eggs was small in portion yet was plated nicely; whilst the standard Melbournian smash avo was up to par. The various salads served was also nice, with the dried kale crunchy and the beans fresh. Not a bad place to eat when resting from a morning of shopping.
Jin & Jase
The Lucky Penny is a "smart casual" cafe in trendy South Yarra of Melbourne. I fell in love with it the first time I visited about a year ago. They had a beautiful vegetarian dish on the menu that involved cauliflower and I daresay, it was one of the best breakfasts I've ever had. Returning again last month, I was not disappointed with the food and coffee. The coffee is beautifully robust and strong, using Niccolo roast coffee beans. For food, we ordered the Eggs Benedict with pulled pork, and an interestingly innovative Bubble & Squeak. Both were delicious and moreish. Unfortunately, my beloved cauliflower dish no longer graces the menu, but the food and coffee here are consistently top quality.
LifestyleByLily
The first thing that struck me were the variety of dishes on the menu, no matter how fussy you are, there’s something here for you. I narrowed my choice down to two, the Coffee Cured Tasmanian Salmon ($19) and the Bubble and Squeak ($19). My final decision was the Tasmanian Salmon. Ms DeG was choosing between the Lucky Vegan ($17.50) and the Bubble and Squeak ($19) and decided on the Bubble and Squeak. Just before we ordered, a table beside us had Sweet Potato Fries ($10.50) delivered to their table so we decided to add them to our order too.
David
Way too much butter on my toast. Potato fritters where so salty. Salmon on the side has the weirdest texture. The skinny tall sleeve waiter wiped the floor with a blue chucks then continued to wipe tables with it. Couldn't stomach my food after seeing that
Isabella Sarah Gamble
My friend and I were mislead by the great reviews and unfortunately had a very unenjoyable experience. The place was very cute and quaint but the waitresses/waiters weren't organised with cutlery etc and there was no dress code so it was difficult knowing who actually worked there. The menu wasn't diverse and the portions were extremely small for the price paid. $19.50 for a small toaster waffle with a bit of mango and $15 for a tin of black beans, a sprinkle of sweet potato and an egg. <br/>Overall I would recommend you walk 5 mins down the road to Journeyman and get a much more welcoming and money's worth experience. Do not recommend.

We were supposed to have breakfast with friends at 10am on a Saturday morning. We arrived on time and waited for our friends to arrive to order food. Since our friends were taking forever to arrive we ordered some drinks because it was rude to just sit without ordering anything. The waitress was so understanding. For a Saturday morning, she could have asked us to leave after the drinks since we have not ordered any food but she was very kind and understanding. She did not rush us or make us feel bad for blocking a table without ordering any food. Our friends arrived just after 1200 noon. Yeah, I know shocking and rude! Thank you so much for being such an awesome cafe and for accommodating our rude friends and us. The food was delicious and the portion sizes were great. Awesome coffee and fresh juices. We loved every bite and sip we took. Lots of food and drinks to choose from. The ambience and vibe was so trendy, modern and friendly. All staff were amazing especially that one particular waitress who served us from the time we arrived. Thank you for being so supportive and kind. Awesome customer service. Again my apologies to you on behalf of my selfish friends. Argh! I can't wait to come back. I highly recommend your cafe to everyone.
Kate Dougherty
Nice spacious cafe with a wide menu. I ordered the pull pork benedict with poached eggs, pulled pork, chipotle hollandaise and a herb salad on dr Marty's crumpets. A very tasty dish and the chipotle hollandaise was excellent. Coffee was a bit of a let down though as was the service.
Mashud Miah
Ok coffee but over priced food & very slow service. The food portion sizes could be larger too. Wouldn't go as a first choice again. Plenty of better cafes around Chapel Street.
Steph
Really declines brunch food with a great variety of things to eat that aren't typical from your eggs benny option. Everything is a tad special. Really great atmosphere friendly staff
Christina
Tasty tasty tasty! I must say when I got my plate it looked like there was hardly anything on it apart from two little toastie breads and some tiny strips of salmon! Two bites in though I realised just how tasty it was! I ate the plate in 10mins and wiped it down with my hubbys spare piece of bread!! Wasnt overly filling but too much may have ruined it! Coffee was ok looked more like a cap froth than late. Also cant say the beans were anything flash! With such great dishes and muffins I would want some ass kicking slap in the face wake up coffee! Staff were quick and friendy. Note do not google the website for the place as comes up with a spill about the new owner not paying something something.

After walking past lucky penny nearly everyday for the past year we finally got to go this past weekend. It was busy when we arrived but we only had to wait a few minutes for a table. I got the Pulled pork eggs Benedict and my partner got the bubble and squeak. Both breakfasts were enjoyable without being outstanding, the coffee and fresh juices were both great. The service was really good, all the staff were very helpful, attentive and welcoming.

Both the coffees were rather run of the mill. Yes it’s coffee, but it lacks smoothness, depth in flavour or aftertaste. Just an unspectacular coffee overall. <br/>It’s an okay place for a coffee. Unremarkable though overall and the quality of the bean leave much to be desired.

This was the absolute worst cafe I've ever been to in the whole of Australia... I can let a lot of things slide but this was an unforgivable experience and I was very upset that I had to actually pay for it. I was in a group of five and we all left very much dissatisfied. Over priced and extremely underwhelming. Days later I'm still so confused - how did I paid $17 for sautéed garden mushrooms with untoasted crumpets ? Not only will I never go back, I wish I never went.

Lucky Penny is a cute little cafe across from Jam Factory that has great service and nice coffee. Whilst the menu needs a bit of an overhaul (in terms of options and variety) it's certainly in a good location right in the centre of Chapel St.

I hosted a brunch in the back room of Lucky Penny on Sunday. The table fits 12 guests comfortably. I totally recommend for a group booking. The staff are very friendly and professional. The breakfast menu is sensational and the Bloody Mary's are seasoned perfectly with spice - totally recommend.

Beautiful venue that's aesthetically pleasing! Little inconsistent with staff, some were extremely friendly and welcoming and others didn't acknowledge our existence. Nicely sized meal. Coffee could have been warmer.

We had a bridal shower at the 1st floor room of Lucky Penny. It was a nice, neat, well-lit area, with plenty of room for 20 of us. There's not much need for decor because the venue itself already has this quaint, vintage chic feel. They also allowed us to play music.<br/><br/>One of the things that stood out was the service. Service was amazing. Brittany of Lucky Penny has been so warm, helpful, and accommodating of our plans. She was there the whole time and would keep us updated on the drinks and the food coming. And service was amazing not just on the day, but also with planning the bridal shower.

Lucky Penny's amazing food and service has made it my favourite breakfast and lunch spot. I highly recommend the "breakfast of champions" to go with their amazing coffee. 5/5 every visit so far!

Lots of things to mention as to why this is my favourite café in Melbourne; this is the stuff that matters - 1. Friendly, happy and attentive service with owners who take 'ownership' the right way 2. Great menu intertwined with firm favourites and their own twist 3. Great coffee, and great selection of other drinks 4. Beautiful interior design, relaxing atmosphere, good music.

Absolutely in love with this place. The food is insane and they absolutely slay a coffee! <br/><br/>The team on the floor are incredibly friendly so it's nothing short of an amazing service. They also tailored a few dishes to my liking as I'm vegan so very accommodating! <br/><br/>This place is quickly becoming my go to! And definitely going to be hiring out their beautiful function space upstairs for my birthday! <br/><br/>THANKS GUYS :D 😘😘<br/>

I love that some of the menu options have waffles instead of bread, it does the same and offers a very different flavour which is great since I hate boring breakfast. The coffee is awesome and I'd definitely come back!

Came here with my boyfriend for my birthday lunch on Saturday. First thing we noticed that Lucky Penny is the epitome of the hipster eatery (which in this case is by no means a bad thing!) The main allure was the fact that daytime cocktails were on offer, and believe me ours were enthusiastically received! My fruit punch and his boozy milkshake were both spruked with Kraken rum (one of our favourites) and served in those fancy lil jars. Yummy! I ordered poached eggs on toast with avocado and mushrooms which was very satisfying. The avo was nicely mashed, the eggs were the right runniness (albeit rather cold by the time I got to the end of the dish) and the serving of garlicky mushrooms was generous, although the toast was really crispy and hard to cut through. Bens burger was enormous (didn't stop him from eating nearly all of it :P) with a delightfully thick and unprocessed, med-rare patty served with fried egg, bacon and some lettuce and a side of sweet potato chips which were very yummy and soft on the inside. Only complaint is that it's kind of pricey, hard to get a spot and also we noted that its a little odd how the wait staff were in casuals and haven't got any sort of unifying feature (apron, white tshirt etc) so it was a tad confusing as to who was who in the busy café. Drinks = 4/5, everything else = 3.5

One of the better value cafes on chapel that offers good food at a reasonable price. The waffles are the way to go, massive and tastes really good.

Great cafe in Chapel st that isn't overpriced!! $9.50 for scrambled eggs on toast-well priced for a good serve with crunchy seeded bread.<br/>Salted caramel milkshake was very tasty with homemade caramel.<br/>It wasn't too busy at 11 on a Sunday when I arrived but had busy times afterwards.<br/>Friendly service by staff who clearly enjoy working here.
Fanny Foodie
Had a smashed avo on toast ... Was good except that the avo came with a bit of skin still on... And the toast was ultra dry... Staff was very friendly though
Matthew Daniels
Fantastic food and great atmosphere. Coffee was amazing as well. The staff were very helpful and friendly and our food came out very fast. Definitely will be back!
James Martin
Sorry to say it but my experience here was really bad. Super slow service and the porridge I ordered was cold. We were also over-charged and the guy serving us made it feel like that was our fault. <br/>With so many great cafe's in the area I strongly suggest going elsewhere

We were really interested in trying Lucky Penny, being a cute Scandinavian inspired cafe located opposite the Jam Factory on Chapel St. It sounded different to the other cafes we've been going to, and they certainly did not disappoint! <br/><br/>Walking in, you get that mix of vintage and modern feel to it with the white brick walls and light wooden decor. It has a clean yet rustic vibe to it. Staff are really friendly too.<br/><br/>I started off with my regular latte which I thoroughly enjoyed. They used the 5 Senses Dark Horse seasonal blend which had a nice bitterness and complexity in flavours. It was good. Davin ordered one of their fresh green juices which was also really nice.<br/><br/>For the main I ordered the Citrus Cured Salmon which came with a potato and pea salad, cucumber, fresh herbs and poached eggs. Davin ordered.. the same thing! Yes it's rare that we do but we saw photos of the dish and neither one of us were willing to order something else so we ended up both ordering it! Needless to say we were both really glad we got our own because it was SO good! The salmon was fresh and the herbs and the potato salad was so refreshing! The dish had clean flavours and truly represented their Scandinavian theme. We were very impressed and will definitely come back just for that dish! The quantity was also quite generous and although there was no bread and we thought we might still be hungry after, we actually felt really good after and felt really content.<br/><br/>Overall, a great place if you're wanting something different, Although we technically only tried one dish and their coffee, we can only comment on our experience which was super positive.
CheeseAndCrackers
Hands down best brunch dish in Melbourne. Perfectly poached eggs, soft toasted pita bread, tangy hummus, creamy cashew puree, fresh coriander, and then the star, crispy spicy cauliflower, roasted to perfection. It's a perfect dish. my perfect dish. The coffee is great as well.
Sakura Dallaire
Cute cafe - super slow service but the staff is nice. <br/><br/>We ordered the waffles w/ waffles, chicken & waffles, and the meatball dish. The waffles w/ waffles were super cute but tasted nothing special. Chicken and waffles were pretty good but TOO much bbq sauce. <br/><br/>I'll probably come back for their yummy coffee!
Tiges
Cute cafe, coffee and food all good. Service a little slow but if you're coming for a slow and leisurely breakfast/brunch that won't bother you. Nothing amazing or innovative but good quality standard cafe food.
Vegieface
The salted caramel hand shaken milkshake was great, and the waffles with waffles was quite nice and presented well, with lots of fruit around it. Definitely not the healthiest thing, but a nice little treat in a very cute cafe.
TheWhiteSherpa
Nice vibe, nice health food, reasonable service, the right place for a easy going start of the day. They have very good freshly squeezed juices, with no added sugar for the health conscious. Worth a try!
EatToLive
Lovely lovely fit out, friendly people and good coffee. The location is prime just right opposite to Jam Factory. Have not tried heir food yet that would be in the near future. Highly recommended for now to those coffee lovers that get bored from Chappeli (I'm just joking :) ).

the other morning i was thrilled to be invited to a ‘healthy skin + healthy life’ brunch at lucky penny in south yarra to celebrate the launch of ‘renu 28’ in australia. renu 28 is a revitalising gel, suitable for men and women and is scientifically designed to encourage your skin’s natural renewal process through the redox signalling molecules it contains. i have a pretty fuss-free ‘beauty regime’ (let’s be honest… as a foodie, getting to my next meal is faaaar more important!). but having used this for a couple of weeks now, my skin feels more hydrated and looks smoother. win!

There aren't many great cafe options around the Jam Factory section of Chapel St.... But now there's Lucky Penny! Great coffee and really tasty breakfast options. Really enjoyed their smashed avo and I had it with a side of cured salmon which was seriously good!! My dining partner had the eggs benedict and reports from her were 10/10. Service is on the mark too - the woman who served me last weekend from Liverpool was super friendly and just generally awesome. Nice to see somewhere decent on this stretch of Chapel :-)
Lachie Morton
Service that was bordering on overly friendly, but that's just me. The food was amazing, both my wife and I were completely satisfied. Coffee was strong, probably too bitter for some and the juice was refreshing.
Hungry
Average. Nice decor, food is ok. Nothing great.
Gwendolyn Tan
I had one of the items on their special menu, which had poached eggs and spinach. It was pretty average. My friend had another item on their special menu as well, which I think it was the sriracha pulled pork sub. He found a little bit too dry for his liking. The ambience of the place itself was great. It was big and spacious enough. The service was good and the waiting time for the food was decent.

Such a beautiful cafe and food was glorious! Service from all staff was lovely and bubbly! Can't wait to return! By the way, make sure you try the cauliflower dish!.
FullCreamAhead
It was a spontaneous decision to have brunch here. Wasn't overly hungry so I ordered the superfood breakfast bowl. I would love to say it tasted as good as it looked... but I didn't really enjoy it as much as I thought I would. That's not to say my friends dish wasn't delicious...but again nothing to rave about. The service wasn't fantastic>> which might have been because we were sitting outside AND the coffee was a little cold. I expected a bit more from this spot on chapel st.
EJA
Delicious! Delicious! Delicious! I often wake up craving their smashed avo on toast!! Amazing coffee, yummy breakfast, and they even have Kombucha! Yes! As a local, I totally love this place and highly recommend it. Cool industrial-Scandinavian deco also gives the place a cool fresh vibe. Love it
Jess
AWFUL!!! There famous fried chicken waffle is bought from the supermarket with what is probably a purchased cooked chicken and sauce from a jar added on top. The least they could of done is serve it warm but the entire dish was cold and cheap. If I'm paying $18 for a dish I expect it to be made fresh not something I could of made at home better! Don't recommend at all!!!!

Nice brunch spot on Chapel Street.<br/><br/>The brunch menu is a little limited but the food is tasty. They often have some good specials too! We enjoyed the smashed avo and the citrus cured salmon, potato & pea salad.<br/><br/>We would love to go back for their waffles - The look very fun & decadent! We also love that they stock Dr Martys Crumpets. <br/><br/>The coffee is good but perhaps a little bitter.
J
Friendly staff for the Chapel St area - they have the stock standard breakfasty type meals like Smashed Avocado, which is average Joe, but they had a yummy cauliflower breakfast which my friend devoured and I experienced total food envy over. The OJ was super fresh, which was great, as I am an OJ lover and we are now seeing a lot more Melbourne breakfast joints following the 'freshly squeezed INTO a bottle' trend.

Unfortunately, I wasn't overly impressed by Lucky Penny. It's a cute looking cafe, but the food just doesn't hit the mark. It's not bad, nor is it fabulous. To be fair, our waffle dish looked so pretty on the plate, but unfortunately, the taste didn't match that standard.
Naomi
Take away coffee takes forever. Today i waited 20 minutes for a coffee and no apology. On average ive always waited 10 to 15 minutes. Never going again.
Nelly
If you live in the area this is a must. Really friendly. But if your reading this, you most likely you want to know about the food. So I'll get on with it. <br/><br/>The eggs were poached beautifully. The flavours were incredible & so fresh. The challenge is going to be, keeping me away. Knocked this out of the park. Yummo
David Lew
Had fried cauliflower (with poached eggs, hummus, coriander, spring onion, charred bread). Delicious. Full of flavour. Eggs perfectly cooked. Will come back.

You know you're on a winner when you're dreaming of your breakfast three days later.... Best bacon I have ever had in my life! Cauliflower on Hummus with poached egg to die for.  Service was wonderful and perfect coffee. Couldn't ask for more! YUM

Unlucky Penny<br/>I thought I would give this place a try as it's close to my home, and my favourite was closed. <br/>I was there for a meeting with one other person, and not allot of time.<br/>Firstly, we sat down assuming (safe I thought) it was table service, at this point there were 3 staff and 1 customer. After around 15 mins I went in to order as no one had acknowledged us, the waiter/cashier confirmed it was indeed table service and apologised. When it come time to order I advised I wanted a Bacon & Egg sandwich on just bread with JUST bacon and egg, very plain, is that ok? He confirmed this was fine and took my order. The food come out and it was on a ciabatta bread roll with chutney and mayo along with the bacon and egg, now by this time due to the fact I had about enough time to eat something quickly and leave, I ate bits that I could and left it.<br/>NOW, as I went in to finalise the transaction, I thought I would mention to the staff member there the problem with the order, she said it was her fault and not the waiter, I advised that I was VERY specific to him and he acknowledged my request, ANYWAY mehh done! Once paid and completed she decided to follow me out and advised me in a very firm manner that they could have fixed it and not to make a big deal of it in front of the other customers as its humiliating for them. Umm 1. I just mentioned it to you, there was no BIG deal 2. WHAT THE ?? Thats the idea, you messed up guys. The next time ill be going back to unlucky penny? never. With so many cafe's in that small area of chapel street, I really don't think they have the luxury of speaking back to the customer like that.. Ciao. I'd sooner go over the road to McDonald's, at least the teenagers don't live you attitude.

Ice cream for breakfast? Why not, when it comes on top of a waffle and looking as impressive as this?. Waffles with waffles, chocolate ganache, lemon curd and seasonal fruit. An upside down vanilla ice cream cone plopped onto a crisp Belgian waffle, with a quenelle of dark chocolate ganache and salt flakes, surrounded by strawberries, kiwis and quince chunks and dollops of lemon curd and waffle cone pieces – is there a more fun way to start the day?
