Review River Kwai Thai And Burmese Restaurant - Melbourne

Best Thai food in town. The quality of the dishes is consistent. Been here with my friends many times and had no problems with their customer service

I rarely give O stars to any restaurant despite good food. This review is just to open eyes of the owner. Today i dined along with family after reading many 5 star review's. I asked staff for seating for 3, staff assigned one table, My wife felt unwell due to direct AC, so we changed seat. Staff came rudely and changed some dishes, kept on behaving rudely. While giving order if i cancelled one food item, she raised eyebrows and behaved like we are from different planet. I asked her are you unhappy that we are dining here, she didnt say a word. Later she didnt come again, other staff was too no less in throwing tantrums. Food was good but staff was unwelcoming specially towards certain group of people. In hospitality business your staffs smile and humbleness matters most, rather they treated me they are offering food for free ( My bill was close to 100$ for 3 people), food entries were priced steep too. Loved pad thai but will think again while coming back. Beware if you wanna go there and expecting customer service. Big NO

Been to this restaurant for years now and each time the food has gotten progressively worse. The Pad Thai served up barely had any prawns and the beanshoots tasted off. The curry dish, was overly sweet, despite not ordering a sweet curry and the meat was very chewy. We maybe ate half our meals before leaving.

The food has always been good here but I will not be returning. The service is very slow and unfriendly. Towards the end of the night, around 9-9:30, staff will bring out washed tea towels and hang them up on the back of chairs and even start vacuuming whist there are still tables eating. You will be informed that they are closing and pretty much told to leave, even if you aren't even finished eating or drinking. This is some of the worst service I have had at a restaurant

Food was delicious. For a busy restaurant, the service was fantastic. We will be back again.

Booked through their Quandoo booking platform and received a confirmation of the booking only to be told on arrival that they did not have our booking. They then told us that we could eat as long as we were out in an hour. Our red curry arrived to the table and smelt like actual poop. One taste was enough to stop us eating any of the dish. The pad Thai was fantastic, as was the Pina Colada, hence the additional star in the review. Staff were indifferent regarding the inedible red curry and we were charged full price. Very disappointed as we used to frequent the restaurant several years ago and this was certainly not how it used to be.

Very good Thai restaurant, asked for some dishes to be 'thai hot' could have been a lot spicer, but very good food, would definitely recommend

Love the tod mun pla | Por pia thod | Vegetarian curry puff | Tom yum soup | jasmine rice | prawn and potato soup - I wasn’t too fond of Thai before I tried the food here and now I’m simply smitten. It’s our go to when we need a food mood booster. A 4 rating only because my order on Uber eats has been mixed up a few times.

Loved it, amazing food, great entree. We had the prawns,i could've eaten plate after plate of prawns. delicious Tom yum soup, best red curry I've had in ages, and the roti cooked perfect, soft and tasty, perfect to dip in the curry

Great experience dining here. Welcomed into a cozy atmosphere with great Thai art and ornaments. They have also have a great selection of wines on display. I started with the Thai beef salad, my first time ever trying this dish and what a fantastic introduction. It had an awesome acidic punch to it with a subtle sweetness. Next our mains. The girlfriend had the pad thai which was sizzling hot, straight off the wok. I can't tell you what an authentic pad thai tastes like but it was the best one I have ever tasted. I selected the red curry, it was a perfect balance of flavours added to the creamy coconut sauce. Keep up the good work Nathan and Pratana. 5 stars. 10/10 my new Thai goto.

Awesome food and exceptional service. I was not concern about vegetarian food, but they have almost every dish with vegetarian tag except very few. Pad Thai and Green Carry are my favorites. Would definitely recommend to vegetarians.

This is probably the best Thai/Burmese Restsurant in Melbourne. Simply delicious.

The Kwai Tofu and Veg tempura were excellent. Great ambience and food. Friendly staff. Would definitely recommend !!

THE best Thai takeaway ever! So worth the 25 minute round trip. We'll be back without a doubt.

My friends and I used to come here all the time and raved about this restaurant. However of late we have come a few times and the quality has been very poor. Sorry to say but unfortunately we will never be back

River Kwai Burmese is a smallish restaurant seating60 people in appropriate themed settings. <br/>The staff were lovely and attentive. One hostess even showed me how to use my phone camera when taking pictures of lights. Now that service heheh<br/>Restrooms were clean as so was the kitchen. <br/>We ordered tempura veggies with tamarind sauce yummm and highly recommended <br/>We also order Burmese chicken noodles which came in a Ayam like sauce, very cleaning and appropriately spiced. <br/>Complimentary prawn crackers and peanut sauce was given and we order flaky roti that came with the most amazing peanut sauce l have tried through Melbourne. <br/>4 1/2 star will come with a larger group

Went here with my boyfriend when I craved fish. The fish was surprisingly big! It tasted nice, will come back to try more dishes.

I honestly do not know the reason for the high marks that revievers give to this place. My mixed entrée was really overheated and semi-burnt and the main was nothing special, with further intestinal consequences a couple of hours later. I am really disappointed. I will not go back to this place ever again.

Have been coming here since 2015, River Kwai has to be one of Melbournes best Thai and Burmese restaurants. There is a passion from the kitchen that shines through in each high quality, fresh and flavoursome dish.<br/>The service is friendly and attentive from the manager and team, you can’t ask for a better experience.<br/>Great value, very highly recommended.<br/>⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A long standing establishment in Clayton- River Kwai serves up authentic Thai and Burmese cuisine, which is extremely tasty.<br/><br/>I came for a family celebration, and the service was friendly and efficient.<br/><br/>We tried the Massaman curry, Pad Thai, Pad Grapow, Papaya salad - and whole fish cooked two ways.<br/><br/>The fish was my stand out of the evening, as was the pad Thai noodles.<br/><br/>As this is an older restaurant, the decor and outfitting isn’t very updated or modern and is starting to show its age, but the food is tasty enough that you look past all that! Have also previously had the Thai green curry and pad siew noodles which are also pretty good!

This place is incredible. The cultural ambience, the service is magnificent, when you enter the place you feel regal through the impeccable features and craftsmanship within the restaurant. My personal favourite dish is the Gai Tod! Its an entree but its a damnnnnnn goood entree. The lighting is perfect for a romantic date. The whole family can enjoy too with excellent service by the waiters who serve with a smile and makes sure it stays there.

So tasty! This place caters for dietary requirements, including nut and seafood allergies, which many Thai places do not. It is so delicious, we always leave the restaurant feeling so satisfied with the meal. We will continue to visit River Kwai - yum!

Ordered takeaways and it was a good choice. Mixed entre was nice (maybe a few too many vegetarian options) and the chicken noodles tasted great. Will order from here again!

River Kwai is Clayton's best kept secret. Beautiful authentic food that is sweet, salty, and sour without being too hot. The service is exquisite -- traditional Southeast Asian gentle courtesy. As there were only two of us, we ordered the chicken strips with sweet chilli and soft shell crab with tamarind sauce from the starters (as the waitress suggested), with the green papaya salad. The generous portions meant that there was more than we could finish. Each bite was delectable -- that tamarind sauce made the crab sing in three-part harmony. And let's not forget the peanut sauce that accompanied the basket of crisp fish crackers that they served while they got our order underway. Make sure to book a table. We got there at 5.30 pm on a Thursday night, and noticed the  place really filled up over the next hour.

Thanks for the meal!<br/><br/>Ordered Pad Thai chicken, steamed barramundi, duck curry, beef salad, and fried soft shell crab with tamarind sauce.<br/><br/>Awesome venue especially for bringing guest over. On a winter's night the warmth and decor is both relaxing and comforting. The pad Thai chicken is standard great pad thai. Served steaming hot, it was sweet, sour and salty. The steamed barramundi was particular good value for money. At $25 you get quite a large fresh fish sitting in a light fish and lime based sauce. The duck curry is my absolutely go to. Best Thai curry in Melbourne currently. Love the roast duck, creamy sauce and juicy fresh cherry tomatoes. Will be back with more family and friends!!

Delicious food, with a wide variety of dishes on the menu! We ordered veggie stir fry which was heavenly, they brought in vegie crackers with peanuts which was sooo good. I ordered a burmese curry which was packed with flavour. The portions are massive so had to get the curry takeaway. Service was good, it was crowded, still they accomodated us, will remember to book next time !

Came here for dinner it's a really nice relaxing Thai restaurant to come to, when you walk in your greeted by the lovely staff. Had the friend prawns, tofu and prawn crackers with peanut sauce. Everything came out at a reasonable time. Flavours were there and all the dishes were so delicious.

Love this place, food is very tasty <br/>The staff are friendly and efficient <br/>I’ve had take away from here too and the quality is just as good <br/>Favorite meals are the chilly crab and the green curry
LL
Ordered on uber eats. The packing was good. The food is delicious. The portions are decent. The pad thai was not my favourite. But the curry, beef mousamb and green Thai curry were extraordinary. Fried rice was also tasty.

Just had an Uber delivery - given to a bike rider, who had two runs. Being 2kms away you’d think it would be direct. After 35 minutes I had to call, it arrived 45 after ETA, the poor bloke was sweating, and of course cold and soggy. Understand it’s a third party, but the hones goes back on the restaurant to ensure multiple deliveries don’t go on a bike from clarinda to Clayton South. Never again. More responsibility from the providers.
Chris
I have been meaning to leave River Kwai a review for quite some time.<br/>I've been coming here for many years.<br/>I swear the fried barramundi is the best fish dish I have ever eaten in my life!!<br/>They just seem to mix the flavors so well and very thai-esque with the lemongrass, fish sauce and chilli combined with veggies.<br/>The red duck curry is on point. The pad Thai does not disappoint.<br/>River Kwai has never ever disappointed us since we first came here many many years ago.<br/>May I add the little things in restaurants like clean cutlery and cold water I value highly and not many if at all are cleaner than River Kwai.
I Love Food
Dined here last night for a family bday dinner. I had the fish cakes for entree & shared the Burmese chicken curry & sizzling beef plate for main with coconut rice & roti. Food was tasty & enjoyable. The young man that served us was very friendly. In the entertainment book so got a good discount off the bill also.

It’s amazing how perceptions change over time as we broaden our food horizons. Perceptions change on the quality of the food, service and the price. From our latest experience at River Kwai, it was the latter. Helen and I had eaten here many many years ago, at a time when a $20 meal felt expensive us. Therefore it was no surprise that we had thought River Kwai was beyond pricey, especially for a restaurant located in Clayton. As it turns out, fate would bring us back here again. It felt like a weight had been lifted off our shoulders this time, because our thoughts on food prices has changed, and we were able to enjoy this restaurant for what it is!

Have been going here for years and still love this place. I haven’t been able to find a better Pad Thai anywhere else in Melbourne. You must try their Pla Choop Pang Tod (battered fish). <br/>I would have given 5 stars if it was cheaper.
Just.Lori.G
Have been going here for years now but over the past year or so we have found the quality to have greatly improved. The staff are very friendly and the food is always delicious. We always order the Pad Thai, Green Curry Chicken and Masaman Beef - these have become our favourites. Check it out if you're in Clayton.

You get what you pay for. The food is good if not great. The service is lacking a little but friendly nonetheless. The curries are really the saviours of the menu. Recommend for a quick/cheap weekday night meal.

Had takeaway. Chicken pad Thai. Excellent! If you don’t want it sweet which tends to be the case in western lands, ask for less sweet and it was perfect!! The chicken green curry was tasty. Can’t complain. Good value for money.

I ordered UBER EATS here a couple of nights ago and the minimum wait time is approximately 15 to 20 minutes. As the food arrived it was still hot & in a massive portion size for 1 person to consume. I ordered the Pad Thai which was so flavorsome  and the Tom Kha Soup which also had so much flavor. I would definitely be coming back to River Kwai to eat more yummy food.

This place will not disappoint specialising in Thai & Burmese cuisine.<br/>The focus here is on quality.  BYOW.  A friend and I ate here last week  and have put this place onto our 'comeback-to' list.  $90 bill between two of us.  We shared 3 mains - no entrees.<br/>1) Pla Lui Saun (Barramundi with Thai herbs, chilli jam), 2) Pork Pad Med, 3) a soft-crab stir fry dish.<br/>All 3 were delicious, presented well and decent servings.  Good atmosphere, friendly staff and could hold a conversation easily, well patronised.  Visited on a Wednesday at 7pm and approx 60% full.  Price-Value Equation is fair given the  good quality of the food.

I came here for a work dinner, and it seems to be a pretty popular place. I absolutely loved the green curry and massaman curry with coconut rice. The pad Thai was decent enough, but I wasn’t a big fan of the pad see ew, it didn’t taste like other ones I’ve had from Thai places. Drinks were cheap, and the portion sizes are very generous, so 4 dishes between the 6 of us was plenty! Reasonable service. Would happily come back given it’s near work.
Lakshmi
Food is good. Bit on the pricey side. Don’t mind paying for good food. Still not in the top 10 Thai that I have been to. Like the Burmese dishes. But service needs to be good as well for that price point. Infact at any price point. To be treated like they are doing us a favour, not great at all. Have stopped going solely on the basis of service.

Rude staff and the food quality has degraded from last year. Their green curry was undercooked. At the end of the dinner, I asked the waitress for a take away container to take the one slice of cake that was left, and she brought the huge cake box. When I asked her again for a small container, she started walking and saying stuff in her language to the other staff members which I am pretty sure was against me.

This place was recommended by a work colleague. I would highly suggest to book a table as it is a very popular restaurant. We were a party of 3 and they seated us on a table for 2, so it was a very cosy night for us all. Despite that, the settings and ambience was pleasant and surprisingly not too noisy. Now for the food. I ordered the crab salad and was not able to eat it all due to the strong fishy taste. I asked the wait staff if it was supposed to taste funky and was told that the crab was fermented in salt. If you are sensitive to such flavours stay away from this dish. The entrees and prawn crackers were nice. I would like to try this place again and order other dishes.

Really nice food although i recommend to come in at least 4 to appreciate the variety of the food because servings are generous and the curries are heavy.<br/><br/>We walked in without a booking on a Friday evening. It was so busy but the person in charge was helped made a table possible. <br/><br/>Service was prompt although they were very very busy. Our order didn’t take long, and we had a very delicious and sumptuous dinner.<br/><br/>I would said because there were only two of us, we couldn’t order more than 3 dishes and the noodles even proved too much after having the fish and tom yum soup.<br/><br/>Definitely would like to come back with more people to try other dishes!
Helen
The vegetable samosas were divine and I could have eaten 20 of them, but had to leave room for the rest of the meal. The roti bread was nice. The sizzling beef and special fried rice were ok. The pepper beef was the nicest. Pad gra pow was rather ordinary and the curry soup had an unpleasant flavour apparently. The coconut rice was good. Overall everyone found the food quite average and not having enough variety of vegetables.
KC
We were not happy with the service here at all. The waitress was pulling her face when we made a second order and left us speechless. The food was okay but not impressive.

Friendly staff, great ambiance and the food was good too. would definitely come here again. they have a wide variety of vegetarian options as well. would recommend eating here.<br/>

Not quite a local gem but good enough for your Thai fix. Pad Thai bit on the sweet side but one of the better ones in the area. Roti was better than expected but the peanut sauce was oddly starchy. Would've preferred more herbs and spices as green curry flavour was subtle and veg stir fry was boring! Serve sizes are ok given the price.

Not having eaten Thai food many times along my culinary journey we thought we would give the River Kwai a go after a recommendation. I’m so glad we did as the food here was great. Fresh clean and with the right amount of flavour and spice. Very generous portions and at the right price. This has set the benchmark for me in Thai cuisine. It’s a must try.

First time coming here the other day. The interior of the restaurant is lovely and good for dates. Service was good and the food really food. We ordered pad Thai (vegetarian) and Khaw swe kyaw (egg noodle stir fry) and enjoyed both. Prices are reasonable for the portions they serve but can be seen as slightly expensive if you're used to takeaway noodle shop prices. Would definitely come back as I would love to try the curries.
Wasurat_shop
I ordered massaman beef curry from Ubereat. I didn't expect that it would turn out to be quite delicious. As I'm Thai it's not easy to find authentic Thai restaurants or at least make me feel like home 🏡. Many Thai restaurants like to put Broccoli or vegetables that are not authentic. The beef is so tender with potatoes and pineapple. I definitely try to order Pad Thai next time! <br/><br/>P.S. If the River Kwai put onion and roasted peanut or provide an option for massaman chicken. It will be amazing otherwise well done 😊
Tony
Nice impressions upon entry. Had a table for two positioned right where the cold air was blowing. Extremely uncomfortable and they refused to move us? So we moved anyway! Entrees which were vegetarian curry puffs and satay chicken. Puffs were solid, chicken average. Ass end meat from chicken :( for the main I had an amazing sizzling stir fry. Absolutely delicious. Overall main was amazing, entrees a bit average. We had prawn crackers that tasted dry and stale. If it was for the main 5/5. However due to poor response to not moving us and average entrees represents the score.....
Shelly Sungkono
The service is excellent. The steamed fish is good. The coconut rice is balance, not overly sweet. The dessert is yummmieee. The ambiance is really good. I would like to come back to try their Burma dishes
LittleM
River Kwai is a popular Thai restaurant in the 'burbs. Came here for the first time with family and had a good experience. The thai/burmese dishes here are really yummy and tastes authentic. Even the interior of the place reminded me of when I visited Thailand. We ordered a few different dishes but my favorite would have to be the lamb curry and duck curry. Other dishes we tried were the son thum thai, prawn pad siew, soft shell crab choop pang tod , fish fillet saam rod; with coconut rice. Despite the food being on the pricy side as the dishes were quite small in comparison, I wouldn't mind coming back.
Van Nguyen
We wanted to try something local so we could have a few bevvys. Heard some great things about this place. Out of the 4 dishes we ordered we enjoyed half of them. The chicken satay was tasty as was the banana and sticky rice dessert. The crab som tum/ papaya salad had an overly fish smell (sort of funky) and the curry with noodles was slightly sloppy with over cooked eggs. I think I might've just ordered incorrectly, would love to try this place again.

Always guaranteed a delicious meal when I'm at River Kwai. Food is consistently of an excellent quality and service always warm and attentive. One of my favourite Thai places in Clayton. Parking can be a bit of a problem due to time and permit restrictions.
Willtravelforfood17
Good Thai food which has been in the area a long time with good service. Just a little on the expensive side and the portions are not big. They are unique as they are Thai-Burmese fusion. Worth a try.

Food Delivery times was quoted as 50 mins on a Sat night, but was delivered 10 mins earlier. Great Start. Ordered Chicken Fried Rice, Chicken and Potato Curry and a Jasmine Rice. Curry was really flavorful and the fried rice was pretty good too.

Tasty food, great service though I can't comprehend how this Thai place charges outrageous prices for the main meals. Given its location and all they charge in line with other local restaurants.

This is the first time I have ever felt the need to write feedback for a restaurant. I don't know what the food is like, I'm sure it is fine. But me and my friend didn't get a chance to try it. I'm here to review the service. <br/><br/>We walked in earlier tonight, the staff looked worried but we were told to sit down after a girl checked with a young man (who later on the phone told me his is the manager, but I severely doubt it) told her it was ok.<br/><br/>We were seated for 5 minutes, had plates and menus given to us, then a girl came up and said she was worried there may be a booking and she wasn't sure if we could stay. What a thing to say to someone who has been sitting for 5 minutes, without checking first. I asked her to check. 3 minutes later people came in and we were told that we couldn't have the table. I wouldn't want to eat there under any circumstances following this so we grudgingly agreed to leave. She said she was sorry with zero apology in her voice, offered nothing, and then asked us if we would like to order "Take away", pathetic.<br/><br/>I called shortly after and asked for the manager, the young man who said that we could have the table in the first place (who is not likely to really be manager, mangagers generally have some ability and professionalism) first blamed the waitress, then admitted that he said we could have the table, then told me we didn't really have a table anyway because we "just walked in", then talked over me, then said I should come back and implied that he would beat me up (good luck;). <br/><br/>Looks great, nice atmosphere, one nice waitress at least, probably ok food, WORST!!!!! service I have ever seen or heard of, avoid like the plague!!!!!!

Great food and environment. Reasonable prices and interesting dishes. Well done to the team and staff in creating a lovely environment. Would recommend anyone in Clayton to give this a try.

Love this place! It was delicious, cheap and will definitely be back. My faves include the green curry with chicken and coconut rice - best coconut rice ever! Even has coconut chunks!

Food was quite good, went here with work and I got the prawn stir fry sorta thing. It was good but a bit on the expensive side. What annoyed me was the lack of service, they did not clean off our plates and we were there for about 3 hours. I wanted dessert and at no point got the offer or chance to have it.<br/><br/>Would recommend for a good Thai place out but if you are on a budget or like personable service probably not.
Julia Liow
the meal started with complimentary keropok (prawn crisps) with peanut sauce, which was bomb. my clumsy ass spilled the peanut sauce on the table & the waitress replaced it with no hesitation - service is great & efficient. food (i had pad thai) was actually pretty mediocre, i've tasted better. portions were massive. the meal ended with dessert - banana fritters with coconut ice cream, which was so delectable & satisfying. highly recommend!
Bun's Food Diaries
The dark red theme of the resturant and decor certainly did stand out, would be a romantic environment for a date night especially I reckon.<br/><br/>I had the prawn pad thai. While serving size was generous and they give several prawns, taste was average. Prawns are always a highlight for me in a pad thai dish - unfortunately I got soft rather than 'crispy' prawns. <br/><br/>I enjoyed the satay with prawn crackers/tom yum soup the most.
World Eats Food
I came here a few times with my friends for dinner. I love the interior in here, and the staff are really friendly. Food wise, green curry and coconut rice is a hit! The roti is a let down though, it's not crisp and fluffy so I don't like it. The Thai milk tea is good. Portions are average. I don't mind coming here, just won't order the roti even though roti is my all time favourite.
Rheg
me and my colleagues love to order from this restaurant because they were really prompt when it comes<br/>to delivery.<br/>i love their papaya salad. always ordered this. pad thai is yummy as well.<br/>i just hope they'll serve thai milk tea as well!

Couldn't recommend this place more, in terms of food, flavours, atmosphere, service and overall quality. My go to dishes include the sweet Burmese curry, Thai beef salad and coconut rice (made with real coconut and is served with slices of coconut that really add to the experience). I've been here for dates and birthdays and the staff have never disappointed. Big thumbs up!
Sotasty
I thought the entree I had was pretty nice. But the main dish was an utter disappointment! My duck salad was a soggy mess and had way too much pepper in it. Mouth was on fire...not a well balanced dish at all. Service was good and friendly people.
Munchk1n
Nice Thai place in Clayton. We've tried their stir fry soft shell crab, red duck curry, tempura veggies, coconut rice. All were delicious. We also tried their crispy whole barramundi with Thai herbs and chill jam dressing...unfortunately the fish was a bit dry . Will come again :)
Jieming Han
I was there on Saturday night, it was very busy. The only thing I cannot understand is why they cannot switch on the air con? Very busy, very hot inside.
Cheesey.dumpling
Well what can I say? I've gave these folks way too many chances.. I thought that I must be ordering the wrong thing but no you must never underestimate yourself, especially if you are a food blogger! The food here is really not rather scrumptious. They have a nice menu of food but they all taste like something you would feed the convicts on their ships...i'm not going back and I would NOT recommend visiting this restaurant.
Sean Kim
I ordered fried rice and they burnt the food and dont even mention it. the food smell like all burnt and cannot enjoyed the food at all.<br/>staff were kind and nice but the food was terrible. I even got stamps but I don't think I'll ever use it again.

This is my second dinner at River Kwai and like the last trip, dinner was delicious. A group of 7 of us dined here and had a lovely evening- the service was impeccable, the food was delicious, and all round it was exceptional value for money.
Big Belly Full
Came here with a group of friends for the first time. We ordered the Seafood tom yum soup, Burmese vegetable curry, vegetarian pad prew whan and the saam rod. The saam rod – a house special - was a deep fried Barramundi with 3-flavour sauce, I suspect tangerine sauce was one of them. The dish was fragrant and delectable, I’ll be ordering this again the next time I come here. The highlight for me was the banana dumpling that I had for dessert, a scoop of coconut ice cream accompanied it. The ice cream was icy and not creamy as I had expected, it went well with the banana dumpling. The banana dumpling was made of sticky rice filled with mashed banana and topped with toasted almonds, it was subtly sweet and heavenly. Order the banana dumpling if you want something light for dessert. Staffs were affable and attentive, and greeted us with a warm smile. The ambience of River Kwai was pleasant, it was a splendid restaurant to relax in.

Thought we would give this local joint a try as we came across it in the entertainment book. The complimentary prawn crackers with satay sauce was a nice touch. For entrees we had the prawn Tom yum soup which had a bit of heat. However I did find it quite rude when the waitress tried to take it away before we were finish. I had to let her know we weren't done yet as she didn't ask. Mains we had the sweet and sour stir fry with pork. This was perhaps my least favourite dish of the night. Tasted like something you would have at home. The Thai Red curry was nice but perhaps a bit too sweet for my liking. Pad Thai was good but did not seem as traditional as a lot of other Thai restaurants. For dessert we had the pandan creme brûlée with coconut ice cream. The ice cream was delish! Very refreshing. However the pandan creme brûlée was overly sweet. The over abundance of sugar outweighed the pandan flavour which was a shame. Cosy restaurant with nice ambience. Waitresses could have been a bit more attentive. No-one came to check in us for the whole meal. Not sure we will return though as there are few other thai places I prefer over it.

I came here last night with my partner because we were craving some thai food. Made a booking for 2 at 8. We got there early so we waited a little. The place was packed! I had been here once before. We ordered a prawn tom yum soup, burmese lamb curry and masaman beef curry. We also brought a bottle of wine with corkage at $5 per bottle which was great. Food came out within about 20 minutes of ordering despite it being busy. All the dishes was really flavoursome and the meat was really tender. None of the dishes was really that spicy and could do with more spice. I really rate this place for thai food and in my opinion one of the best. Services was great staff was very friendly.
Food For The Soul
Really good Thai and Burmese food. Portion sizes and value for money. 1 of 2 Thai places in the area we go to. But this one is the best.. Really authentic taste and look.

After seeing these guys advertise their $10 pad thai deal I decided to go give it a try. For $10, my expectations were not all that high but I was delighted to discover that they make a mean pad thai. Since then, I often come to eat in and take a box or two home for lunch/dinner the next day. I haven't really given the other dishes a try but mark my words, I will certainly be back with a friend or two to share this great food with soon!

River Kwai has some of the most fabulous Thai food in South Eastern Melbourne.  Their red curry was awesome, and so was the Pad Basil.  They can do vegetarian for almost all of their curries and stir fries, plus some soups.  It is well worth the $20 average you pay here for each dish.  In spite of it location away from the main shopping-eating strip it is running a full house most evenings.

Beautiful service, beautiful food, generous portions with option to take home leftovers! Will visit again! Ordered the Thai fish cake and stir fry beef!

Take away review. This is our favourite Thai place! The coconut rice is always fresh and vibrant with coconut flesh throughout. A few favourite mains include the red curry with duck & lychees, red curry with beef, Burmese seafood curry and Burmese lamb curry. All are packed full of flavour, have quality ingredients and excellent serving sizes. A little pricier than other take-always but definitely worth it! It would be great if they had desserts too :)

Went here with a friend and ordered the Pad Thai and Pad Siew. Portions of both were very generous, but the flavour was somewhat lacking compared to the punchy flavours of other Thai offerings that I've become accustomed to. Given, both noodle dishes we chose were possibly the mildest, most generic choices on the menu. However, it would have been nice to have a balancing sour tang even so. On the flip side, the prices were very reasonable for the amount of food had!

We dined here on recommendation and was very happy with the food. . Quiet and cosy little restaurant with very good customer service. Tried the chicken satay skewers which were very ordinary but the free Prawn crackers made up for it. The chicken pad Gra pow and beef pad see ew we ordered were very nice however the chicken fried rice was dry and lacked flavour. Will be going back again.

A little cosy restaurant in Clayton with good ambiance. We live nearby so we come here quite a bit, mostly on their buy 1 get 1 free vegetarian nights. Food isn't exactly authentic (like who puts in dark soy sauce into Pad Thai?) and can be a bit salty to young palettes, otherwise their stir fry and curries are pretty decent.

Had the Pad Thai and the Seafood Green Curry<br/><br/>Seafood Green Curry was great. On the border of Medium to hot, a nice amount of prawn, fish and scallops. <br/><br/>The Pad Thai Prawn was great as well. A large serving with King Prawns, I challenge you to finish it. <br/><br/>The table service was also great as they were friendly and accommodating.

River Kwai is our go-to local take away restaurant. Food is always high quality, tasty and fresh. Great variety of dishes on the menu, however it is a little more expensive than other Thai restaurants that we visit.

Was craving Thai food last night and River Kwai<br/>seemed to be the only Thai place in the area. Ordered the Khaw Swe Kyaw which<br/>was delicious! Will definitely go back for this! Pad Siew on the other hand was<br/>okay – not as authentic as other Thai places. Prices are also expensive and the<br/>portions are quite small. Delivery service was great! Ordered on menulog and<br/>food was delivered 35 minutes later.

I seriously feel like I'm in heaven every time I eat from here. I haven't had a bad meal yet and if I could I would eat the roti bread with peanut sauce every day of the week! The only downside is that I can't control myself and alway end up eating too much!😊 best place in town!

One of my fave so far, i personally dont like tofu, but the battered deep fried tofu served with the dipping sc was soooo yummy!<br/>and the blue swimmer crab cooked in tamarind sc was to die for..<br/>i will come back soon!

I don't believe this place knows how to make bad food, or give bad service, whether we are eating in or taking away (which we do once a week!!) we are always amazed with the food.<br/>The consistency is the key, no matter what you eat from River Kwai, you will get an amazing aroma and taste of traditional thai spices! Not only that it is literally 2 streets from my place! <br/>Nathan and the crew are doing such a fantastic job since taking over last year! <br/>Thanks for such a great experience every time

Just a quick review today. I tried the Zomato Online Ordering function for lunch. We were after some food, and noone was able to step out to pick up something, so thought I’d give it a go. The wait time for the meal wasn’t too bad - I placed the order shortly after 12:41pm and received the call at 1:16pm. When the driver called me, he actually went to the business next door because apparently that is the address that was on the order. I’m not sure if this was a glitch or he had misread the message but anyway, the order arrived safe and sound (I waited at the front of the building to make sure he had the right place the second time round). He apologised for getting lost, but the food was still piping hot so it wasn’t too bad.

Ahh im so glad this is my local Thai takeout! River Kwai serves up the best Thai food Ive had anywhere in Melbourne... seriously full of flavour, always delicious! Prices are reasonable considering the quality of food and staff are super friendly and accommodating (I am both a coeliac and fructose intolerant - basically a nightmare customer with all my required alterations). Sweet basil stir fry is my favourite. Would never get takeout anywhere else!

River Kwai is not only reasonably priced, the food is fantastic, well portioned and fresh. Not to mention, full of authentic flavour. It is quite a pleasant setting too, nice Thai decor and a good place for a family catch up or to dine in with a group, nice attentive wait staff. I must recommend the whole crispy skin barramundi with sweet chutney! <br/><br/><br/>

Great food, friendly staff, lovely ambience and a convenient location - what more can you ask for! Do try their Burmese lamb curry - it's an all-time favourite. Their coconut rice is the best by far, so fragrant and fluffy. The complimentary prawn cracker starter with peanut sauce is always a highlight for me. The steamed barramundi is also full of flavour - very authentic Thai and Burmese food.

I am pleasantly supprised as going to Clayton to eat is a very hit and miss experience.<br/>There is a really warm and relaxing feeling in the River Kwai, i found myself as interested in the artwork as i was in the menu. <br/>We eat out a lot and generally im sick and tired of bad service, we eat out with the expectation of a smile and a full wine glass when i want it, and the girl serving us ticked all the boxes for me!<br/>Thank you River Kwai

Pleasant ambience Utterly indifferent food and expensive. Visited River Kwai on a busy Saturday night. The restaurant is advertising itself as Thai and Burmese.<br/><br/>What should have alerted us, was that the restaurant was filled with Australian Saturday night diners. No sign of Thai or Burmese clients.<br/><br/> We are vegetarians and our choices were a little limited. Ordered entree of curry puffs and spring rolls. Both filled with similar sweet potato filling greasy and indifferent. Also ordered Pad Thai (basic Thai noodles) - presented greasy, sickly sweet and did not taste anything like Pad Thai.<br/><br/>Followed by Green curry and coconut rice. Again the curry was very average and bizarrely sweet.<br/><br/>The well below average meal cost $67.30<br/><br/>We certainly tried only a small number of dishes, however these were well below standard. Accordingly we cannot recommend River Kwai.

Disappointing!. Something changes in this place! it seems like they see more $$$$ than other things.

Best thai ive eaten. A good friend of mine has always gone on about how great this thai was but living in the city i dont venture out to the suburbs much but did for his birthday dinner here.<br/>the food was amazing. so much flavour, fresh, and delicious. the staff were great. food didnt take that long to come out considering there was about 12 of us.<br/>I will definitely be heading here again it is worth the drive!!

Horrible service. Ordered food over the phone, have been told the order will take 30 mins. Came to the restaurant to pick up food in an half an hour and had to sit there and wait for another 45 minutes! If I was told from the start how long it's going to take I would never ordered there! Very poor service

...some of their dishes are slightly lacking depth of flavour, which could be compensated for with a bit of creativity, and because while they advertise as vegetarian friendly, not all the staff understand that concept. Still great food though.

This place was lovely! Fast friendly service with complimentary prawn crackers with peanut sauce.<br/>Food was delicious & couldn't fault it! Love the atmosphere. :)

Nice place but this place is quite dear considering it's in the burbs. We paid similar prices at a top notch in the city!

Delicious!. My boyfriend and I had an extremely tasty and authentic meal at River Kwai. Definitely recommend.

Still Fantastic. It has been a while since we visited, we dropped by on a impulse decision when we were near by. The setting is just as lovely as I remembered with gorgeous Thai paintings and sculpture around. <br/><br/>The mixed entrée is my husbands favourite while I had a roti with satay sauce. Roti was a bit crunchy for my liking, but the satay sauce was authentic and beautiful. Main of duck curry was amazing with sweet undertone. Their special of soft shell crab was fresh and delicious. Although I had trouble finishing it, our waitress kindly packed it up for us. End the night high with the Kaffir Lime Panna Cotta, it was amazingly fragrant and smooth. <br/><br/>The service was friendly with Thai courtesy. Staff seems to be pretty busy at times and our waitress apologised for the slow service at the end of the meal. We thoroughly enjoyed it and the service was pretty good.

Mind-blowing Soups. We went for dinner last week and I think the Tom Kha soup I had there was probably the best I've had in Melbourne. It was so enriching with so many herbs, spices, tofu etc. The mains were very good as well Red-curry, rice and Pad Thai). Let the price not deter you from checking out this awesome Thai restaurant in Clayton. You won't be disappointed.

Food was fine, but there's a lot better Thai food around. Overpriced for the quality.

I love this restaurant!!! I've eaten here so many times and it's always amazing :)

Lisa. It may be more expensive than other places but you pay for the meat which has been slow cooked, it tears apart, is soft and tender and sticky. YUM! The staff are attentive and pleasant. Have changed my Thai food provider.

Been here a few times and food has always been good. Massaman beef and the burmese lamb curry are my personal favourites. It is also such a pleasure to come to this restaurant, the staff are so pleasant always with a smile. Very uplifting!

Approx $45 for two pad thai dishes is a joke. I've most certainly had better than this place. To make things worse the price is almost $6 a serve cheaper if you have the dish take away. Never again. No wonder another couple walked in looked at the menu and left. Very over priced. In hindsight, wish we'd done the same. Underwhelming.
