Review Tokyo Maki - Melbourne

Sarang PARK
I love here. All the food I ordered was delicious. Even when I called to make a reservation at the night, they responded quickly. He kindly explained the menu and taught me how to reheat it for takeaway. When I said I came from afar, He thanked me and gave me their candy. If I go to the city again, I will definitely go back 👍👍

I went to tonight with my friend and it was absolutely delicious! We had the sashimi boat, soft shell crab roll and sides of crispy seaweed and sweet potato… so good! I had the brown rice green tea presented in a very cute teapot, where my friend had a matcha latte. It was great value for money, good portion size and friendly service. ~ Angelina

This place is the most AMAZING restaurant in Melbourne as far as I'm concerned. The service is always amazing, the staff are wonderful and the food is to DIE for. I highly recommend the sashimi boats!

This restaurant is extremely nice! The food is scrumptious. And the service is good. The staff are friendly. I recommend to go this restaurant!

The food was great, and with friendly staff and food came to the table quite quickly too. Will definitely visit again!

Best ever! I ended up having Nigiri at the end cuz I fell in love with Sashimi and Champong here (both are top notch in Mel). I’ve been to Korea and Japan many times and find this restaurant as good as there. More improtantly, the owner and staff are so nice and friendly! By far the best experience. I’m gonna be here next week again.

This came quite recommended from my colleague… dined in for a 🥘 dinner recently.. Food was very great and liked the portion size offered. I’m not generally someone who goes for a Beverage after dinner, but the options here were really great and my friends and us enjoyed having it. Especially the citron tea ☕️ with fruit and honey was a great choice. Recommend this one for a try ..really felt going back again for a lunch 🍱 once as well.

The service was great, good atmosphere, clean tables and the food arrived quickly. I ordered the "Charshu Ramen", expecting it to be a pork flavoured ramen. The ramen arrived, piled with bean sprouts and filled with large chunks of vegetables. The egg was clearly just an over-boiled egg cut in half (disappointing). The broth looked promising but upon tasting, found it to be strangely fishy flavoured. I am not a fussy eater in any sense and will even eat food that I don't particularly like, but this meal was inedible to me. I can't speak to the rest of their menu, but this was a very disappointing ramen dish.

Not on the Japanese cuisine, but Korean food, we'll come back.
Beautiful salad I must say.

Great hospitality! Amazing healthy meal!

Maybe shouldn't eat Korean food at a Japanese restaurant. The bibimbap was not great, felt very flat. My own version actually taste better which is not often the case. Owner doesn't seem to like ppl using zomato Gold? Seemed pretty annoyed by it. I had already unlocked it when a staff came to serve us. When paying at the counter while I open up app to show him that I already did, he impatiently insists that I hadn't, even though I told him twice. If he is not keen on this program, don't join it.
Claire
there was an undisclosed 2.5% surcharge for zomato gold members (pretty sure this isn't the norm at other places seeing as i've dined using gold and had no surcharges related to using the app). service was ok- not amazing, but not terrible either. aside from that, food was great, but my friend had the pork katsu curry and said it was a little bit salty. i ordered the korean cold noodles with charshu, noodles were nice but the charshu was tough. mandu soup was really nice, as was the seafood jeon. all in all, nice food, but probably won't go back.
Ronalim
Average food with horrible service. Owner was very rude and sighed in our face when we showed zomato gold.
Melissa
Food was decent but similar to other people’s experience, restaurant owner definitely was not pleased that we were on Zomato Gold! If you can endure the less than ideal service, food is tasty enough to give it a go.
Tessa Coy
This restaurant has a wide selection of Japanese and Korean dishes, at reasonable prices! I enjoy their rice dishes, particularly the chicken katsu don. However their male manager can be rude, I was scolded by him for using my Zomato gold membership when I went to pay because I hadn’t informed a waiter in advance. Not too sure what difference this would have made? Makes me think they would serve smaller portions or something.
Steph
Many items on the menu are not eligible for Zomato Gold 👎🏻 Staff had extremely black face and face turned even blacker upon being told that were on Zomato Gold 🌚

Ordered:
Volcano Beef Rib Stew $16 🥘
Grilled Salmon $21

Volcano beef rib stew 🥘 Decent portion of beef ribs in the stew for a small serving but definately pricey at $16. Meat was pretty tender and they had some sweet potato noodles in the soup.

Grilled salmon: Pathetic serving size for $21, 4 miserable pieces of salmon. When the sizzling plate arrived on our table, it was pretty much dried up. Salmon was alright, a lil dry but lucky is that the fish skin wasn’t stuck to the plate.

Nice homely wooden interior with calming instrumental music.

The lotus chips were displayed on a board and drizzle with sauce for decoration. The sauce was sweet.

Tonkatsu bento. The tonkatsu was overly cooked but had a light batter. The sweet potato had the most aromatic crisp batter. The chicken was quite dry but the sauce was perfect.

Curry katsu came with bite size potato and a generous amount of sauce. The katsu was drizzled over.

Welcoming staff and delicious flavours make this byo restaurant worth a visit. Out of the main city hub, situated near the Aquarium, it has charming decor and cheap-eat prices. Stand outs are the sizzling chilli chicken, lotus root chips, deep fried tofu and the Japanese pancake. But I don’t think you could go wrong with any of the choices from the extensive menu that also includes noodles, sashimi and Korean bbq.
Pratik Kothari
Have a lot of vegetarian options , excellent food.

A cute little spot next to the Sealife Aquarium. Had ordered the bento box meal with a Fuji apple tea. The gyoza in the bento was deep fried and a bit too oily for my liking. The sesame honey chicken was too hard and didn't taste fresh. I enjoyed the okonomiyaki and the seaweed tempura. The Fuji apple tea which was quite nice aswell but the image of it on the menu depicted a cold drink (which I was looking forward to).

Overall it was a good experience but flavors and freshness of the food could be improved.
Lizzy
Can’t believe he can work in service industry as he was so rude to us and didn’t even serve us by no reason. If you are not ready to work just keep your emotion at home .
Monica612
Very good service, clean and the portion is generous. The chicken yaki udon is very nice. Will visit more often to try other dishes in the future.

My partner and I found this Japanese restaurant by chance as we were in the area at the time.

The service was good considering this place was packers. My soju was delicious hihi and it was a great start to the meal.

The sushimi was alright, it didn’t taste like it was too fresh and it lacked flavour to be honest.

The chicken curry was nice, without being extraordinary. It was certainly filling though.

The pork katsu was nice although a little dry.

The okonomiyaki was really tasty and temperature HOT hahaha phew!

Overall this was a reasonable restaurant, well priced and in a handy location.
㊙️ The Traveling Foodie
Regular place by uni students and city sliders.
There is 15 min parking at back just enough for a quick meal.

The quality is a bit sub bar . Busy during lunch time and cheap bite with free miso soup.

However the quality is much lacking.
Kok Hwa Tan
Great mix of Japanese and Korean food. Service was very friendly and food was really nice. Been here twice now and Will be back again for sure!
The Casual Diner
Will come back for:
+ Ginseng Chicken Soup

This place is just off the CBD grid, but has a pretty large selection of Korean and Japanese dishes. I particularly liked the ginseng chicken soup as this was a generous pot of super temperature hot, hearty and delicious soup. Especially welcoming on a cold winter day. We also had the Korean bbq bowl which was just ok. Service was friendly and quick and prices was very reasonable for what you get. A good option for a fill of Japanese or Korean fair.
Some Bunee Loves Food
Noodle soup broth doesn't really taste good and the stews are so so. It was close by so I tried it a few times until I saw their staff going out for a smoke with their aprons on and it really put me off sorry.

Delicious food, great for the start of our girls night out! Thanks for a yummy dinner! All dishes were as described and everyone commented on how much they enjoyed their meals.

🥓 ORDERED MENU 🍳
Unagi Teppanyaki, and the Grilled Spicy Salmon.

🙆 WHAT WENT WELL 🥰
✓ Food: Always came back for one thing: the Unagi Teppanyaki. Sauce isn't the best I've had, but it's very fatty and enjoyable. On the oily side.
✓ Service: Don't expect too much, standard for an Asian shop. Pleasant enough.
✓ Value for money: I came with Eatclub, 30% off. For the prices they are charging on normal, definitely on the pricier side. However, probably one of the cheapest, decent Japanese fusion with the promo.

🙅 WHAT DIDN'T GO SO WELL 😬
× Food: My sister ordered the Grilled Spicy Salmon. Not quite clear on the picture, but the portion was disappointing. Three pieces of meat, and the rest was filled with vegetables. Taste was quite decent, marinated with Gochujang.

🌺 FINAL THOUGHTS ☘️
Definitely a good deal with Eatclub! Always leave the restaurant satisfied from our money's worth. Would be hesitant to come back without the promo, since their food is not the most memorable.

Audrey
Tried the korean beef teppanyaki, taste very very very delicious!!!! The okonomiyaki from the bento was lit! The side dish for the teppanyaki were very fresh and tasty. Staffs were very polite and friendly. I will definitely come again👍

Wish I could give you better rating. But we were in a hurry, we wanted to have a good meal before my brother left to Japan. It was written that they open at 11. They open at 11.30. :/
Quince And Cheese
Doesn't look like much but this Korean Japanese fusion spot is actually pretty good. They do barbecue as well as other dishes at a reasonable price, with lots of veggie options. I tried a bento box which featuring a diverse range of ingredients including mini veg okonomiyakis. Everything was fried but only lightly so and flavours were all there. If you're on that side of town and need a cheap bite, this spot is probably one of your best bets.

Thank you so much to the waiter here who was so accommodating and really went the extra mile to cater for my diet. What I asked for was definitely unconventional but what I couldn't eat was substituted with things I could. The entire meal was delicious and the service was excellent.

Craving a Korean meal, this was the closest place to go. I always doubt Korean Japanese fusion restaurants and this time I was also correct. The special rice beer was interesting concept and reasonably priced. Japchae was very tasty and exact noodle texture you expect . However the kimchi soup was very sweet and I did not enjoy it. Chicken and cheese was average. The mozzarella cheese did not taste great and very oily. Very nice pickle and side dishes.
All in all, not overly impressed.
Quicksmart
Visited multiple times over past 5 years, food is wonderful especially the salmon dishes, the owner super lovely, layout is pleasant and you can choose to have bbq at your table or off the menu which we always choose. What more is there to want? Excellent.
Tracy
worst food here.SERVICE VERY POOR!NO MANNERS especially the OLD MAN!! Did not enjoy the food and service.i have nothing good to say about this place except don’t waste your time, money or calories!!!
YARM
A cosy place with an expansive menu full of both Korean and Japanese food - we couldn't decide what to get! I had the Seafood Yaki Udon (only $13 for some tasty fried udon noodle with SEAFOOD) and my friend went for the Teriyaki Chicken Bento ($12 for rice, tempura, tebasaki chicken and miso soup). As a person who usually prefers udon in soup, I was pleasantly surprised by its similarity to stir fry noodles and was pleased by the amount of seafood. This place was definitely value for money, especially for dinner!
Vick Eats
Average lunch with a lot of options and a range of pricing for meals, nothing special or memorable in my opinion. Probably wouldn’t try again

This place is next to my work, so we go here atlest once a week. I have tasted almost everthing on the menu....so i can say nothing tastes bad here. I love beef tapenyaki, katsu curry( they can make it extra hot too!!) Kimchi soup with rice/ ramen/ udon its excellent.
The Dear Luncher
This place is pretty eclectic. You can have a sit down meal or take away some very enticing looking sushi. Plenty of Korean and Japanese food options. There are a couple tables that allow for Korean BBQ too. I real Jack of all Trades type Japorean operation. Sampled were the pork gyoza and the chicken karaage salad. Also a Cass beer for a lunch special bargain price of $5.50. The salad was a tad strange with olives and carrot in it. Also the fried chicken batter just needs a little bit or work – far too thick. There is a fine balance between deep fried chicken and a really lightly fried Japanese karaage style. Some places seem to get that balance a little off unfortunately. The pork gyoza, fairly flavoursome. Plenty of reasons to want to make a return to Tokyo Maki, that’s for truth.

Right place right price right people. Sushi, hot food, noodle and special menu. Hi chair available.
Easy parking. Thank you tokyomaki.
Staffs are kind enough.
SnapEatRepeat
Neatly decorated little joint. We had Pork Katsu Curry and Pork Katsu Don 🐷
While the portion was generous and staff were friendly, the food was average. The katsu was dry and quite bland. Sorry 🙊

Food’s pretty good. Bibimbap and the jijjaes are recommended. The low score is mainly for not having food ready on time. Ive only not had to wait for long when I’ve placed the orders over the phone. I’ve tried number of apps like eatnow, menulog and zomato and every time the outcome’s been the same. Even after ordering food up to an hour ahead and requesting they be ready at a certain time, I’ve still had to wait for around 15 minutes for dishes to be prepared. If you are in a rush just don’t bother.
Michael Mikey Oon
Very arrogant and cocky service from the male waiter/owner at the counter. Very impatient answer when being ask about the dishes ingredients in the menu. Will be my last from them

A good lunch for this day
Beef tataki is very good.I like this restaurant very well.and squid salad is delicious. I like Sushi and sashimi very well.
Suf
Good for a quick bite. The teriyaki don was okay, nothing to write home about. The service was good but there is a minimum payment on the card so I had to pay a small fee. The lady checked about my egg allergy which was nice though and the place seemed quite busy. My food came super quick which was perfect as I was in a rush.
John
Great service, attentive and quick to deliver. The bento box with teriyaki chicken was lovely and tender (no fat) and other goodies included a fried chicken wing, lovely soft rice, salad and some tempura (not my fav).

The octopus balls were Devine! But too much sauce but I'm just being fussy ;)

I've been here a few times, and was surprised at the quality of the food. The okonomiyaki comes on a sizzling plate which is very delicious - however, the last time I was at Tokyo Maki, we found a giant piece of paper in the noodle soup. It was a spicy soup, so the paper wasn't visible until mid way through the meal. The paper must have been what the crab was originally wrapped it. We told the staff, who apologised and brought out a new soup. However, we were not offered any discounts which was disappointing. Will not return.
Cindy
The price is very reasonable for the food they have. But it's what you get. Not bad, but nothing special. Cannot say the service was very good since I didn't see a smile, but it was okay, they have take out boxes and gave a bit more fingers when asked. Good to go for a quick take out or a lunch special.
Elise Paterson
Place was really great! Nice atmosphere. Waitress was really helpful in my selection as I can't have anything too spicy. Had the katsu don ramen. Very cheap! Only issue was I couldn't finish it all because the serving was so nice and big. Won't order entree next time because I couldn't finish it all. Tasted lovely! Will come again!
Kristie Koo
Their sashimi don was pretty good, nice warm rice for a rainy day. The flying fish roe was served still frozen, didn't really love that but overall the food was fine. Service was alright too. Loved their green tea latte, one of the best lattes I've had in Melbourne.
Melbourne Epicurean Juror
After a long trek from Flinders Street train station I visited Tokyo Maki for lunch today and chose their Mixed Sashimi Set (salmon, tuna & white fish) for $20 and I wasn't disappointed, it was nicely presented, was very fresh and tasted great. Service provision was very good, the décor was truly impressive & the background music was at a sensible level.

The Juror's Verdict: Food 5/5, Service Provision 3.5/5, Will I return: Yes, to try one of their teppanyaki dishes.

Phill Jury (food critic & writer)
The Swine
The Swine has been enjoying Bento Box feeds at Tokyo Maki for a long time. The spicy octopus bento is a Swine fave. Miso Soup here also goes really well, as does the complimentary wee tea (as called by a number of regulars). Tokyo Baki has a great range on its menu but the Swine keeps going back to the Bentos as the stand out! Ramen here is another decent consideration. Located at the Spencer Street end of Flinders Street this place is a little out of the way but well worth taking a chance on if you crave Japanese. Nice.
Borderline Sunshine
The service is quick and the food is tasty but the tebasaki chicken just sit in the window for who knows how long so it isn't cooked fresh. Still tasty though. Also the chilli oil expired in July 2015 and its April 2016. May not be coming back but I loved the chicken katsu curry.
The One DV
Ordered from Foodora - delivered in 35 minutes from ordering which was great, Seafood Udon soup was delivered pre-mixed which meant soggy udon noodles on arrival, Gyoza were dry on top and soggy on bottom, Yaki Soba was pre-mixed with pointless salad in same bowl which turned to mush!
I cant vouch for quality in restaurant - im sure it would be better when delivered straight to the table however for delivery / takeaway they would do much better if they simply separated the components!
Steve
Ordered tonkatsu curry. Very disappointing. Rice was ok but that was about it. Tiny serve of pork. 4 pieces. Very mean. And the sauce was horrible. Sweet. No discernible curry flavor. Won't be back.
Food Affair
Overall a nice place to grab some dinner, its a casual dinning. Nice Japanese place to grab some quick dinner in city cbd. We tried there seafood items which were nice.
Sarah
Get very disappointed at the Sashimi Don, which can hardly go wrong. The salmon slice is from the edge part, very fat. The rice is nice though. A new staff works there, who is not good at English but very polite and friendly.
Sungsam7
Unfortunately the worst kaarage I've had and the tempura batter was like fish and chips batter - thick and heavy. I thought I got a piece of fish but it was pumpkin with extra thick batter. The chicken kaarage was suffocated with more thick batter and as you can see from the pic it was not edible. It was terrible.
JKGasMan
Prepares authentic Japanese. We come here for the katsudon and the udon noodles. Nicely located close to Melbourne Aquarium if you're down that way.
Kimmy_desu
This place has recently undergone a change in management and is now named Komegashi. The food is primarily Korean in taste, you can't really call it Japanese, but the prices are okay and portions are quite big. We ordered a mixed bento ($11.50) and prawn tempura udon ($12.50). Most of the items in my bento were taken from the fried food bar at the front counter - it consisted of a piece of sweet potato tempura, slice of seaweed tempura, two pieces of Korean gyoza, a small dim sim, a slice of sweet potato, a small okonomiyaki pancake and two chicken drumsticks, with a little bit of salad and rice. The okonomiyaki and dim sim were a bit stale from left out for too long, everything else tasted ok. A quick and affordable feed, and I'll consider coming back again for takeaway or a quick bite as I live really close.

First time I ever tried Korean!. I only ended up at this place as it was across the road from the YHA I was staying at. I almost went for Dominos but thankfully, I had second thoughts as I was out to try all the Asian food i could get my hands on... living 2 hours away in Morwell which has zero good Asian places, you have to visit the city in order to get your Asian fix!

I walked right in and was seated immediately. I had never had Korean food before but what the hell, I thought, I might as well give it a go. I decided upon the sizzling bbq platter once I had established that it wasn't a spicy dish... any chilli or curry, and I'm out for the count. I also asked the very friendly waitress to hold the Miso soup. The platter didn't take long to cook up and it came out with a bowl of sticky white rice and a little dish of picked vegetables. I had to ask for a fork but once was instantly provided without a raised eyebrow.

The platter was spitting and sizzling as it was placed on my table and the aroma was absolutely delicious!! The beef was sliced paperthin and just fell apart in my mouth, the flavor coating every pore of my tongue! I honestly haven't had such a great Asian dish in probably a few years! The plain rice was a great accompanying dish as it didn't compete with the flavor of the beef and the pickled vegetables were just right in order to give the dish a little zing every now and again.

As a size 20 fat girl, the dish was actually too much for me to finish by myself and I would advise any couples to just get an additional bowl of rice and go from there.

I will definately be back to try their Japanese curry and maybe a couple of bento boxes... in about 3 months time.
PB
Been to Tokyo Maki more times than I can count - Highly Recommended!. I'll set the context: Great Japanese and Korean BBQ food at great pricing.

The service I have always found superb. Kevin runs a great restaurant (yes, that's right I have been that often. I know the owner by name now). Very attentive.

Cannot understand some of the negative reviews as i've never experienced anything described in those reviews :/

If you're expecting the service and food one would receive at Nobu (yes, i've dined there, again many times) then you cannot compare the two.

Great cheap eat if you want to organise an affordable dinner for a work group or friends!

Don't be confused by the name of this restaurant. Looks like Tokyo Maki is managed by Koreans. Although it was branded as a Japanese restaurant initially, it has started to serve more Korean dishes nowadays. In fact in my opinion, they are better at Korean food. Well, I have been dining and ordering take away numerous times from this restaurant since a few years ago. Located at the junction of King St and La Trobe St, Tokyo Maki is a small restaurant with about 10 tables serving Japanese and Korean food for dine in as well as take away. During the day, they have a number of ready made sushi rolls and finger food which are quite convenient for a take away. The sushi rolls are usually sold out by the end of the day. On the menu, they have quite a number of Korean dishes one can find in a Korean restaurant such as bibimbap, dukbokki, various stews, wide selection of bento or don with Korean dishes, Korean soup such as ginseng chicken soup as well as a few 'table cook' dishes where the foo
Sinfulorganiccook
...katsudon in a sweet soy egg-y sauce + kimchi! Mmm....I definitely liked the hot sour kimchi against the sweet sauce. The katsudon was also cooked right and tender. Every element in this dish was well-made. I think it deserves a thumbs-up for courageously mixing Korean and Japanese elements together successfully.
Mochi Jungle
Service is friendly, the place has a nice little buzz with at least half the tables always full and a fairly quick turnover. We’ll come again as it’s not too far a drive from where we are, but it’s probably more of a place you’d try if you happen to be nearby – it’s not exactly close to anything. Having said that, if you’re at Crown and contemplating getting Japanese food from their food court, I’d suggest taking a short walk to Tokyo Maki for a guaranteed good meal.

Really bad.
A Tuesday night, ordered a teriyaki bento box & Miso soup. It was all reheated and part of it was taken from the bain marie - must have been there for hours. Not really hot and definitely reheated. A good source of food poisoning if ever there was. Dont waste your money.

Average Japanese Cuisine, Poor Service. Very average Japanese and no empathy with service: I ordered a bento box that was not fresh and made up from food sitting in the front glass cabinet under the heat lamps (probably for a good few hours). Ordered a drink to make up for the $15 eftpos minimum, only to be given the wrong drink and was told to pay more if I still wanted the one I ordered. For really good 'Melbourne style' Japanese restaurants, try Mr Miyagi in South Yarra.

Horrible Service. I used to go to Tokyo Maki every Wednesday around lunch time. Last week I decided to order the Lunch Special from the board out the front which read 'Any Bento or Don Buri or Noodle Dish for $12.50 with a soft drink'. When ordering I selected 3 bentos options that were 'not included' in the deal. When I finally chose one that was included I ordered my soft drink. Being the only customers in the restaurant during the Wednesday lunch period for the last six months we still have never received any water even after prompting several times. When going to pay for the meal they tried to charge $18 for the price of the full meal plus the soft drink, which happens every time I have ordered the lunch special. Then they lowered it to $15.50 where I only then found out that Coke was the only can of soft drink I could get on the lunch menu. Forced to pay the $15.50 I never received my Coke, my water, or any sign of good customer service. They have lost a loyal customer and will now be eating at the Purple Peanut instead. Thank You Tokyo Maki for being consistently disappointing.
Simmy Jane
So tasty. Tokyo Maki never seems to disappoint. Passionate chefs never cease to provide great dishes.

Generous serves and value for money. The meal wasn't rushed like some places and the atmosphere was great. Lots of locals which means your at the right place.
GourmetMum
Family friendly. We decided that it was time our kids had a Japanese meal. Despite them having a limited taste range (not of our choosing) we gave it a go at Toyko Maki mainly as the menu had Japanese and Korean options. The food was great, service friendly and they were wonderful to the kids. Mum and Dad loved the $5 Korean beer special. Only disappointment was no kimchi and other pickles with the Bibimbap. Excellent value for money. The kids verdict 'we like japanese'.

I don like it. The Age's food section had a spread on Korean food this week. Even though this is a Japanese joint (with Japanese staffers behind the counter) I noticed they offer some Korean items. So I popped down here to get a takeaway don bowl with Korean beef. Feh. The beef was stringy and overcooked. The rice was claggy. Don bowl rice isn't supposed to be as fluffy as biryani, but this was mushier and more stick-togethery than the norm. The only Korean flavour my taste buds detected was an occasional piece of ginger -- no hot chili/garlic vibe to it at all. I might try Tokyo Maki again, because it gets good reviews and it's close to where I live. But I'll go for Japanese menu items, not Korean.
Iggy
Decent food at reasonable price. Service was ok, the male staff did come up as if he's a bit unfriendly but I think it's just his way cause he was pretty chatty asking about how was our food when I come up to pay.
Food Fanatic
Good value, good food. I've gone to Tokyo maki quite a lot of times, most times I need to be in that part of the city anyway. It's always pretty good and the value is really good for way-too-expensive-Melbourne. My fiancé is a big eater who is always worrying about still being hungry and small portions and he loves the place. Thumbs up.

Absolutely lovely warm little Japanese cafe. We are regulars here now, yes- they may be understaffed when cafe gets busier however they have never been in any way rude although they may appear so due to lack of "fake beaming smiles" that many other Asian places do but then again that don't mean anything to us.
Foodwise- Once you figure the things on menu, you will be hooked on to it, and you will find ourselves coming back for more.
Our favourite picks being:
Spicy Yakidori, octopus balls, curry chicken, yaki udon, and freshly made lobster-avocado sushi + cooked tuna sushi, miso soup, kimchi......washed down with cold sake!
One of the cafés in the city that we wouldn't miss for the world every other week for a dine out.
Foodlvr
Terrible restaurant. When I told the staff my brother has a severe allergy (anaphylaxis) to sesame they served him sesame. Luckily we asked a few times before he ate it. They said 'it's only a bit of sesame'. This restaurant should at least aim to keep its customers alive.
Steve D
Awesome customer service. Good affordable sashimi.

Food good. Service not so good.. Ate here for my birthday, there was nine of us so we spent a considerable amount on food and drink. Everything was fine until it was time to cut the birthday cake which we brought. I asked the waitress if we could have a knife and cutlery for the cake she said ok and never brought it out. We asked again as it was probably just an oversight. However they gave us 4 plates, 1 plastic knife to cut the cake and 5 plastic forks to eat with. We ended up sharing plates and I guess those of us left without cutlery were expected to eat cake with our hands. Male staff was also rude. This place was not friendly or accommodating. Wont be eating here again.
MLAU
Great food. Ate the Mozzarella Teppanyaki dish. Biased service, if you're a westerner it's great, but as an Asian sharing a meal, you get treated differently. At least that was my observation, otherwise great food!
Valerie
Service wasn't good due to a male staff. Food was good ! A little pricey but a nice place .
Jun
Extremely frustrated! what a rip off!
4 of us decided to order 4 mains (with either rice or noodle) and 1 eel dish to share. none of us saw the tiny little words under the title which says eel dish also comes with rice. so effectively 4 ppl are having 5 serves of rices! the photo was so deceptive which shows a dish full of eels, but only one piece was served. thats a whopping $20 down the drain for a tiny poece of fish. when we expresse to the manager that he should've advised us that we were ordering 5 rices, he replied "i dont have time to explain to every customer about every dish on the menu! it is clearly printed dish comes with rice!" there he failed customer service big time! the noodle was very average and once again full of noodles and fried flour! only 4 pieces of thin beef were in it! another rip off! every cheap food with high price tag with 0 customer service! stay away!
Remi
What an amazing dinner we had here last night! We happened to walk past Tokyo Maki and decided it was time for some Japanese! The menu selection was HUGE and the menus very professional! By far the best place for Japanese in Melbourne. Very well priced and the service is the best I have had in any restaurant for a long time! Everything brought over on plates and trays!! Good work guys, keep it up!

We decided to try this place after reading all the praises and good review in urbanspoon. We found this place as a rather decent place, but not really to our liking. The ambience of the restaurant is cozy and friendly, and the prices of food are reasonable. We ordered the takoyaki, the okonomiyaki, plum tea, and the sashimi boat platter. Though the takoyaki, okonomiyaki n plum tea all have quite good flavours, we were rather dissapointed with the sashimi platter. The fish are not fresh, and taste rather bland, it's like they have been sitting on the fridge and have been washed with water/ lemon water to freshen it up again. We might be wrong, but thats what the flavour really tastes like. All in all tokyo maki is a decent place, but surely when we come back again in the future we will be more careful and selective in what we're ordering

Japanese experience. Neat, clean, cheap, cheerful, ambient, evocative & delicious!

Cheap and chearful. This is a great place for a cheap, fresh Asian meal. You can BYO and it's reasonable to buy a bottle there. Highly recommend the Chicken Terryaki Don.

Food is good here with bigger more refined setting but I prefer the smaller store on king st. I guess it depends where the boss is as today the boss wasn't in, and didn't get to try the sushi as the sushi chef was out. Sukiyaki is delicious

I got the sizzles. Very friendly staff (couldn't be nicer), Food is fantastic and doesn't burn a hole in your wallet. The chili sizzling plates are amazing and has a very relaxed atmosphere for a week night dinner out. A lot better than some other ones I've tried around Melbourne, that end up costing 2-3 times the amount of money.

4.5 / 5

Simple. Had takeaway lobster roll with avocato and miso soup. Cheap, nice and simple.
Very friendly staff

Cheap japanese. I went there on a Friday night and the place was pretty empty, yet service was slow and the waitress made a mistake. The food itself is decent, and the price is very reasonable. The one thing I dislike is my clothing are smelling like a fried wok after leaving the restaurant.
You Had Me At Haloumi
Cheap n tasty. Lovely little casual place, friendly staff and good food for an even better price.
Had the chilli kara age bento box which came with the chicken, rice, salad, 3 pieces of vege tempura and a chicken wing. Also had many of the entrees. Loved
everything, the dumplings in particular..soy dipping sauce is really nice too.
Will go back to try more.

Tofu Entree. Agedashi Tofu

-----25 Jun, 2010-----

The Hot Pot is amazing!

-----20 May, 2010-----

#1 for quick healthy takeaway. The best Quality vs Price restaurant in Mlebourne! Dishes are so tasty and fresh, and not what you would typically get at a Japanese restaurant. Clear favourite is the Claypot Bim Bim Bab! Highly recommended, love it!

I devoured this bento box of spicy Korean BBQ pork very happily.

My happy place.. I'm sick of cheap food shops offering really fatty deep fried food. This place has a large menu and makes it easier to order something that you actually want to eat. It's got a cute decor inside and on nice days we get takeaway and go eat in flsgstaff gardens across the road.

When i entered the shop there were few people in the restaurant, i ordered 3 dishes for 2 of my friends and one for myself. We got the first meal fairly fast but had to wait at least an hour for the second. I still not had received my gyoza (which does not take an hour and a half to prepare) and my friends had already finished their meals. We had asked the staff three times about it and they were very quick to nod off. I watched people who came in after us and receive their food before i had. Eventually I got up to complain and was met with the sorry excuse of "we're very busy" - my gyoza sat on the back counter forgotten and when i received them they were cold. Terrible customer service, I'm never coming back here again.

My favourite take away shop. Great customer service, fantastic quality and authentic Japanese food from Japanese owners. Also pretty cheap for the amount you get. Very happy that I live close to such a great place to eat.

Not sure why this place has so many good reviews. It's the worst Japanese I've had in my life. Sat down with menu & waited for staff to come & take my order but after waiting a long time I realised no one was coming & u have to go & order at counter. Edamame came out, not fresh very old beans over cooked & turned to mush. Bento box came out. Everything barely warm to cold. Tasted like it has been cooked yesterday & reheated. Very chewy & old tasting. I think hey must have got the left overs from the lunch time warmer & put them in my box. Wish I didn't eat it.

Arrogant owner!!. We all ordered the food from this place except one of our friend who bring his own lunch box.. he was asking for re-heating the food with microwave but the owner (guy) responded with a really bad ,attitude, rude and saying tat we better eat outside this place if we bring our own lunch box. Whatt??. so arrogant, small place, very standard food.. even most of us work in big resto , sometimes we help someone to re-heat their own food n its not a big deal..

Always fresh and delicious. I eat here a couple of times a week. I mostly have sushi rolls or sometimes bento or ramen. I love the place. The food is prepared fresh and is really tasty, and the service is fast and friendly. Oh and a special thanks for rarely using avocado in the suchi rolls - I am allergic and so I get lots of choice on which ones to have. Spicy Tuna and Chilli Chicken are the best!
