Review La Tortilleria - Melbourne

Masi Hashemi
Wow had some Mexican delight here. We turned up without a booking and they were totally packed- managed to squeeze us into a table. All the staff we talked to was incredibly nice and accommodating !!! Definitely a must to try great food and great customer service.

The most authentic Mexican food I have ever tried in the city of Melbourne. I recommend this place, the flavour of all of the dishes were fantastic, especially the Chilaquiles and the flower jamaica drink. I loved. I suggest booking on the web page before going.

Just came back from California with a craving for authentic tacos. Got recommended La Tortilleria from a mate and it did not disappoint! Great atmosphere and friendly staff, a must visit for any Mexican food lovers in Melbourne.

An amazing experience! My partner and I just ordered tacos and we were blown away by the flavours and how generous the fillings were. Highly recommended!

The place had a QR menu. I always love this option. We could see all the pics of the dishes we were ordering and a bit of atheir description. We tried tamales for the first time here. Mine were amazing! Their saucy nachos were great too. And omg their flan del dia! It was sooo yum! We'll defo be revisiting.

@latortilleriaaušŸ“Kensington šŸŒ® Tacos (Lamb, Fish, Potato and Vegan Chorizo, Beef, Pork) šŸ„‘ Corn Chips, Guacamole, Salsa šŸ¤ Aguachile de Camarones šŸ® Flan La Tortelleria is an authentic Mexican street food restaurant located in Melbourneā€™s inner-west suburb of Kensington. Their award winning corn tortillas are made the traditional way from scratch, just like in the villages of Mexico and supply to many top restaurants around Australia. šŸ‡²šŸ‡½ To order you must use their online QR system (If youā€™re wanting to claim Melbourne Money, make sure you order everything in one go!) which is very efficient. We started with some Spicy Margaritas which were nice but couldā€™ve been spicier. šŸŒ¶ The Guac and Salsa were probably the best Iā€™ve had, they have definitely perfected the recipe here. Give me a bottle of that Salsa to go! The Prawn Salad was something I havenā€™t tried before and would easily reorder every time. šŸ¤ We were left underwhelmed with the remaining dishes. We tried almost every taco on the menu and every one lacked flavour in the meat. The ones I would recommend are the Fish and the Potato and Vegan Chorizo Tacos. The Flan was sadly overcooked and curdled at the bottom, but the flavour was there. The vibe here is upbeat and yet casual. You will almost always find a line out the door, especially on Taco Tuesdays when it is walk in only (Expect around a 20 minute wait)! I would come back to try some of their other main options. āļø 3/5 (Good)

It was a very satisfactory meal at La Tortilleria. Muy bien. One thing I did not like tho. They ask customers to scan a QR code to order. The part where we had to leave personal information before placing the order is redundant and I don't appreciate that.

La torilleria honestly is one of my favourite Mexican restaurants in town. Located in Kensington/Flemington, this place will capture anyone passing by with its colourful and vibrant exterior. As you can see, even the plates and bowls were beautifully coloured šŸ’– Every dish we ordered was so full of flavour- their salads were all so refreshing yet different from one another. My favourite though would have to be the tacos - loved their use of corn tortillas, which were so amazing they did not flake or break. Another big star for their amazing salsas - no boring bits, every bite was fireworks. FEATURED FOOD: - chicken tostadas - carne asada tacos (marinated grilled beef) - pescado taco (fish taco) - tinga de pollo taco (chicken taco) - carnita taco (pork) - chilaquiles (tortilla chips) - frijoles refritos ( black beans, queso Oaxaca, jalapeƱos) - jug of agua fresca (Lime, cucumber, chia and agave nectar) Theyā€™re also available from Providoor if youā€™re isolating šŸŒ® Follow me on Instagram for more foodie reviews & posts!

We used to be big fans of la tortilleria, all the tacos there used to be super juicy but lately, tacos have been dry, in addition I've been requesting chipotle sauce or any sauce and they don't have in stock, seriously tacos with no sauce???? Another disappointed thing is customer service, it's no that great that used to be!!!

This place is awesome while itā€™s small the food is fantastic and worth the travel ! Tacos are nicely filled to really get the flavour and taste very authentic! Service is great with all staff always really helpful and attentive ! <br/>This place is affordable which is great when you want to take your family at anytime ! Makes it really easy for the average family ! So many taco places coming up these days and overpriced that you walk out still hungry ! This place never lets you leave hungry !!

Welcoming staff with an authentic ambiance when inside felt like I was in Mexico. The food was fresh simple and flavour packed with generous portion sizes. The most delicious Mexican Iā€™ve had in Melbourne. The highlights was certainly the Carnitas Taco and Alambre de la plancha. Will be returning and recommending to my friends

La Tortilleria recently had a pop up and I discovered their products. The Tacos are amazing šŸŒ® and I can't wait to go back and try more at their store.

I went here on a Tuesday and was shocked to see how packed the place is . We had to wait a bit to be seated. It have the cozy little space environment and they have very good staff who herself explained us the menu and they had a deal of 3 tacos for 15$ on Tuesday and we ordered 2 fish tacos and 1 pollo taco and their aqua jugs were so good to share among group of 4 members and we tried their Jamaica berry jug which was good to sip with chilaquiles on side and I wanted to have some dessert atlast and asked the staff about the options she said about the flan šŸ® which I dint had before so wanted to try it and I should say this I am a very big fan of their Flan now would visit this place just for their flan for sure . Overall the place was good and budget friendly. Would highly recommend this place for some quick gathering with your mates .

If it's authentic mexican food you want, then this is the place to be. I'm sure this restaurant wouldn't look out of place anywhere in Mexico. I ordered the chilaquiles with added beef and pork, fish tacos, and finally the flan for dessert. The fish tacos could have had a bit more sauce as it was slightly dry, however all the flavours were there. I would definitely come back.

BEST MEXICAN SPOT TO DATE!!!<br/><br/>Food is authentic, clean, and soooo tasty. It definitely rivals a lot of Mexican joints in California. Highly recommend opting for the 26pp feed me deal! You get a great variety from it in case you donā€™t know what you want to choose from. The quesadilla and tostada definitely surprised me and became my favorite options! <br/><br/>Only downfall is the location and layout of the restaurant. Definitely on the smaller end, so hard for them to cater to the crowds.

I went with my partner to have dinner , we order tacos and when we were half way through our dinner, the waitress approached us and asked us to change tables for a smaller one because we were a walk in no booking, she stood next to us waiting for us to move immediately, Ā we asked her to at least let us finish our dinner, then she returned after 1 minutes and began moving our things to the other table. We are very upset that they did not let us finish the meal and forced us to change tables immediately. This situation made our dinning experience the worst.<br/>When my partner went to pay, he was overcharged for what they excuse that the waitress was new, once the prices were changed we paid and left, we checked the bill once we got home and it was still overcharged.<br/>When we express our disagreement with the situation of the tables we receive a simple no respond that left us feeling really disapointed.

We finally had a chance to try La Tortilleria after being on our radar for a long time and it was worth it. The restaurant very homely and slightly cramped but definitely has a lot of character. <br/><br/>Standout dishes included the beef cheek chilaquiles and barramundi tostadas which were very messy to eat but delicious. The chicken quesadilla was also very tasty. We tried the al pastor and pescado tacos - both were good but we found the al pastor needed more sauce and the cabbage on the pescado taco was unusually bitter. <br/><br/>Overall, we were happy to find authentic Mexican food and will be back to try more of the menu!<br/>

Best Mexican restaurant that we've been to in Melbourne, food is delicious, and the service is great. Highly recommend all the veggie options, and the traditional flan is out of this world (sometimes we'll pop by just to get that as a take home dessert).
Hillary Finds Food
Had a great time celebrating my birthday here especially with their homemade flan!<br/>Definitely my go to place for delicious tacos. We ordered a range of tacos, the beef had to be my favourite. I love the Mexican sauces especially the hot ones.<br/>We couldn't stop eating the tortilla chips and guacamole. I would love the guacamole to be bigger though for the price you pay.

Cute little spot. <br/><br/>Had the tacos Al Pastor, the fish taco, and the beef cheek taco. The flavors were good but unfortunately they were just a bit dry. Needed more sauce. <br/><br/>We had the barramundi tostada which was delicious. Would return just for that and to try the rest of the them. Definitely a highlight. <br/><br/>Also had the chillaquiles with chicken and refried beans. (Recommend getting both or just beans but not the chicken on its own). <br/><br/>And finally, the traditional flan which was one of the best Iā€™ve ever had. Consistency and flavour was on point, so creamy and smooth. Went home and dreamt about it. <br/><br/>Iā€™d give this place a 5 if the tacos had been a bit saucier. <br/>

Staff were friendly however the service was extremely slow. I went with three other friends and my entree and main came out first along with one other friend. We had finished everything before my other two friends meals came out so it was a shame we couldn't enjoy our meals together. I ordered three kinds of tacos and each lacked flavour and was fairly bland. Presentation wise, it looked amazing.

In what had been described as a hidden gem on multiple platforms had my friends and I utterly disappointed.Ā <br/><br/>It was a hot night in summer and we were over the moon to be trying out la tortilleria for the first time after all we had heard. Walking through the tiny rabbit warren of a restaurant to the back was a little exciting, until we reached our table... It was like a furnace in there with little to no ventilation and a crammed table for us all to squeeze around. We decided to look past this and order the first round of drinks, these were amazing and I would highly recommend.Ā  Unfortunately the dinner was not quite at this standard. There was black beans on everything and the cheese in the quesadillas was dangerously hot. The tacos were edible with the fish taco a personal favourite of mine.Ā <br/><br/>Luckily the company was nice and the drinks were flowing but I wouldn't bother coming here in summer, unless you like overheating and feeling light headed.

After a lengthy search throughout Sydney & Melbourne, Iā€™ve finally found a Mexican place that compares with what Iā€™ve eaten in Texas and Southern California. The tortillas are made on site, the salsas are fresh and the flavours are all correct and delicious

Awesome atmosphere great service and most of all the best traditional Mexican food around!! Fist time going and we loved it! Traveled over an hour to get there and it was well worth it. Will definitely be back
Charlotte White
Pleasant ambiance. However the vegan options were very disappointing. We had almost every vegan option on the menu and they were just so flavourless. The chilaquiles were soggy and very much lacking in promised sauce. Sigh. I had so much hope as they had a lot of options.
Tasteforyourbuds
Awesome tacos!!! No overly expensive price is quiet decent. The place is extremely small, good for a quick feed. In and out wouldnā€™t stay there and have a margarita. Itā€™s always packed so best to come when the door just opens
Gracelilliankelly
Really disappointing experience. Had been really looking forward to checking out La Tortilleria, however wish I didn&#039;t.&nbsp;<br/>Whole &#039;experience&#039; was 25 minutes long: sat down, barely had time to look at menu before being asked to order, all dishes came out in around 5-10 minutes, no check-backs at all so we just decide to leave.<br/>Ordered their nachos (soggy and clearly not made to order), four tacos (all bland, no flavour at all, and barely warm - clearly pre-made, heated and banged out really quick before it was even hot).&nbsp;<br/>Pluses: cool lil&#039; place with a nice atmosphere, great flavourful sauces on the table (only thing that was worth eating honestly).&nbsp;<br/>Maybe it was just an off night, but just didn&#039;t feel any care or love or passion in the food unfortunately!

Great hidden little restaurant <br/><br/>Traditional dishes done well <br/><br/>Restaurant is only small so I recommend booking before you go to avoid disappointment <br/><br/>Good selection of tequila šŸ‘ŒšŸ¼

The food here was great, it tasted like genuine mexican food and the ambience was amazing. Highly recommend this place, I will definitely be coming back!

Authentic Mexican Flavours! <br/><br/>We visited La Tortilleria for a birthday dinner so we decided on the $35pp menu option that would include various dishes for us to try. <br/><br/>The flavours and food were delicious but unfortunately I did not feel it was enough not enough variety for the price. After having the other option $26pp option before, I could not understand why anyone would opt for the higher option? <br/><br/>So if youā€™re visiting here, DO NOT opt for this option. Genuinely confused as to how this was the more expensive option for what we got...? <br/><br/>To be honest, it really clouded my overall judgement of the food. And in saying this, I wouldnā€™t return. <br/><br/>šŸ’š Delicious Food<br/>šŸ’š Authentic Flavours <br/><br/>šŸš« Overpriced <br/>šŸš« Location

Tortillias are made in-house and supplied to other popular Mexican restaurants around Melbourne.<br/><br/>The fish tacos are excellent ā€“ jalepeno mayo has a good kick, and the fish is firm. <br/><br/>The tostadas have really good flavour combinations but like a bruschetta, can prove difficult to eat as everything falls apart on first bite. Nice crunchy textures though.<br/><br/>Pacifico Cervezas is excellent, very interesting way to have beer.<br/><br/>In general service was quick and bookings are recommend as it could get quite busy during peak times.
Whalesfoodadventure
Service was very friendly. Ordered chilaquiles, carne asada, pescado, calabaza con crema and frijoles con chipotle tacos. Chilaquiles tasted amazing, loved the saucy corn chips. Pescado was the best fish taco ive ever eaten, had heaps of flavour and great texture. Both vegetarian tacos were to die for. A bite and just bursted with flavours and melted in your mouth.
The New Fave
The secret to La Tortilleria's amazing tacos and Chilaquiles (a more authentic take on nachos) is their home-made tortillas. Made with only 2 ingredients - corn and sea salt - their corn tortillas are made the same way the Aztec and Mayan people have made them for a millenia with locally grown corn.

This is a honest opinion from a food lover who enjoys flavour. First , the setting is small and seems like a house flipped into a restaurant but it gives a authentic Mexican feel ( although I have not been to Mexico) . As for customer service there are no problems there .<br/><br/>Now onto food . I had very high expectations from reading other reviews and a general look up of the place. I can say my expectations were not met. I ordered majority of the items from the menu so I could get a taste of what is here to offer. The meat in every dish served was dry, yes dry and yes every meat . The meat seemed like it was cooked the day before and reheated. Not one single taco made me feel like paying $6 per taco was worth the price. The added toppings in each taco aided the dullness and flavourless meat by giving it abit of freshness. There was no expected flavour explosion when I bit into each taco. Dishes were very bland and it was difficult to distinguish the difference between each. Maybe I had come here on a ā€œoffā€ night for the little establishment but nevertheless I did not leave happy paying just under $100 here. I will not return but will be scouting the rest of Melbourne for the authentic Mexican flavour I was expecting. My overall rating 2.5/5. Come on La Tortilleria, step your game up as you are boasting authentic Mexican food.

Ordered the bigger version of the Just Feed Me and was not disappointed. Very filling and every single dish was great. One of the tacos was a bit over seasoned however everything else was lovely. The orange juice was tasty and refreshing. Service was polite however we felt pressured and rushed. There's no air conditioning so it was quite uncomfortable and the venue was rather cramped. After we finished eating, we had some drinks and was asked by the waitress to wrap things up as they had bookings arriving. A bit disappointing however the food made up for it.

2.5<br/>Came with V & D for a catch-up dinner on a Friday night. We came as a walk in (for some reason they werenā€™t accepting bookings at 6pm?) on a hot evening. <br/><br/>šŸ¹ DRINKS: n/a<br/><br/>šŸ½ FOOD: <br/>- ā€œChilaquilesā€ ($11): advertised as $9, extra $1 for vegan, extra $1 for sauce on the side (to fulfil dietaries). These were essentially nachos to share but more saucy and came out a bit cold and soggy.<br/>- ā€œAlambreā€ ($12): chefā€™s special meat dish, and Friday happened to be minced beef. The mince was tasty but small, coming on three flatbread bases.<br/>- ā€œQuesadilla de Polloā€ ($9.5): tasted good but donā€™t remember it well!<br/><br/>šŸ“· AMBIENCE: cute, bright , colourful decor, but perhaps a bit small and cramped. Also poor air conditioning on a hot day didnā€™t help!<br/><br/>šŸ§‚SERVICE: the staff were friendly, but our waitress came to our table 3 times within the first 5 minutes to take our order even when we asked for a bit more time. Perhaps they were quite busy, but there was a real sense of urgency in trying to push us out. Iā€™m not sure why they didnā€™t take a booking, or tell us there was no space if they wanted us to leave early. But made the experience not very pleasant.<br/><br/>Might return in future to try different dishes, but unfortunately felt the dishes we tried were rather bland and small, and the pushy service was disruptive on this first experience. šŸ˜”

One of the most authentic and beat Mexican cuisine restaurants in Melbourne we have tried so far. We came here for a friend's birthday, unassuming and pleasantly surprised when we got there. Seated outside in an ambient setting likened to a beachside bar in Bali, we had to indulge in the $35pp setting which offered everything you see in these images, minus the drinks.<br/><br/>The sangria jug we ordered was a refreshing pleasantry, very tasty (could have been stronger in alcohol though haha) whilst the Mexican cola had a unique and distinguished taste that makes it our favourite over regular cola brands. Now the food! Where do we even start? The sauces, chips and ingredients used for each dish is exquisite. Rich in flavours, meat that melts in your mouth (notably the lamb on the hard shell bottom), this restaurant definitely stands out in its unique flavours. Our favourites overall were the aforementioned, and the tacos (pork was best).<br/><br/>Although wait times for food were long, we still enjoyed our experience here. We would recommend the meaty options and to ask what exactly each dish is, as the menu is a little hard to understand for us simpletons. Either way a delightful Mexican restaurant, one of our favourites in Melbourne. Rich meat flavours, mouthfuls of unique tastes and an all round good experience!<br/><br/>Food: 4/5<br/>Service: 3/5<br/>Ambience: 4/5<br/>Value: 3.5/5<br/><br/>Overall: 4/5

The horchata was really nice. I happened to go there on taco Tuesday so I got 3 for $12. I ordered six. The was disappointed cause I could only taste the meat which was really salty. I wish theyā€™d put something that could cut the meaty flavour a bit cause it was too over powering. Even some pico de galo wouldā€™ve been nice. The flan was really dense with many air bubbles. A good flan should be silky and smooth.
Sonnye West
The one and only Mexican restaurant you ever need! šŸ’– we travel a fair way to come here but it never disappoints. Staff are so nice & the food is legit Mexican. Not a wannabe
The Gluten-Free Foodie
Delicious gluten free Mexican food in a great atmosphere. We had a big group in the room with us but they didnā€™t disturb our chat too much. The waiters were lovely and accommodating. We tried a number of dishes about found them all extremely tasty.
Emily Elizabeth
Set menu is great, itā€™s cheap, the food is tasty and itā€™s a little bit hidden. Book because it does get full, not very disability friendly as there is a flight of stairs to enter
Sally
Came here with friends. Waitress was confused re tables and moved us 3 times. Food was delicious and fresh. Cauliflower tostada was spicy! Quesadillas were yummy.

The place one should head for if youā€™re in the mood for some authentic, budget friendly Mexican food in Melbourne. Located close to Macaulay station in North Melbourne, La Tortilerria is just a quaint little place by the roadside serving some great Mexican bits and lovely margaritas- made from scratch!<br/>Tried the Quesadilla de Pollo, Frijoles con Chipotle with a Margarita ClasicĆ” and Paloma. Loved the cheesy quesadilla and the cocktails! Do try the housemade Flan at the end to help you get a foodgasm :)<br/>Would suggest them increasing their portions a little to make it a visit worth everything.

Wonderful authentic Mexican fare and little worries about any gluten for coeliacs like me. <br/><br/>La Tortilleria is a local haunt that I find myself returning to time and time again due their truly delicious food, some of their yummy margaritas and a bustling yet authentic atmosphere right in Kensington. It helps that their corn chips and tortillas are to die for, and prove to be of a completely different category from the standard Tex-Mex products you find in supermarkets! <br/><br/>It may sound odd, but it really makes a world of a difference in the quality and taste of Mexican food!
Nalia
An excellent Mexican restaurant and one of the better ones in Melbourne. It's a cosy and homey little restaurant situated off the main road with plenty of parking nearby. The service was warm and friendly, and food came out quite fast which made for a very efficient dinner. We had the $35 feed me meal which was great value with plenty of food. The tortilla chips with guac and salsa were great, followed by a delicious chicken quesadilla and a tasty beef tostada. The chilaquiles were nice. The pork and beef tacos were excellent, and the chicken tacos pretty good although we were getting pretty full by this stage.Ā Loved my horchata drink. Will definitely be back with family and friends.
Sir Eat Alot
Came here on a Tuesday night, read good reviews for this place, so I expected to be wowed in terms of the taste of food. Interior and exterior was very cute and made it feel very Mexican which was cool, the space was a bit small though so I wouldn't recommend big groups of over 10 to go unless you have a booking. The waiters were very nice and informative, they told us that was Taco Tuesday so it was 3 tacos for $12. We ended up ordering a nacho dish with guacamole, 6 tacos and the tradition flan. The nacho and guac was good but not great like 3.5/5, the tacos were 3/5 they were a quite dry and lacked flavour and sauce. The flan was quite nice 4/5. Also the margaritas were very good 5/5. Overall I think this place is okay, but it definitely has potential to be great if they up their Taco game.
New Food Critic āœŒ
3 for $12 tacos is quite the bargain! Grilled beef taco was our fav. The rest lacked flavour and was really basic. Hot sauce wasn't even hot. A little underwhelming given the high reviews. Staff was friendly tho!
Mark Luyun
Brought my partner here on a Taco Tuesday night and was surprised that the place wasn't packed. This is my 3rd time here and the first two visits were nothing short of amazing except that they always seem to run out of Horchata quickly. I prayed so hard so I can get the elusive Horchata and voila, I was able to get it.<br/><br/>The Horchata is pleasant with the right amount of sweetness and serving (you don't get sick of drinking too much). Ordered tacos (Carnitas, Pescado, Al Pastor, and Carne Asada) which were great as always except for the Pescado which is a little bit dry. Their Quesadilla and Chilaquiles are spot on!<br/>PS. Photos were taken a little bit too late :|

A hidden gem in Kensington! We had the feed me menu for $26pp and it was perfect! My favourite was the soft mini tacos and the flan. Will be back to try more.
Itsmissprincess
Truly incredible Mexican food. Have nothing bad to say about it. Great prices, decent service, great decor and most importantly sensational food. Only thing is it is a bit out of the way but its definately worth the journey to get there. I always recommend this place to anyone who wants amazing Mexican food.
Chubbylover86
Went for the Tuesday taco night, 3 tacos for $12. We were able to try most of the tacos on the menu and they were delicious. Highly recommend the grandmothers special recipe flan. Was amazing! <br/>The place itself is worth a visit and great for large groups where there feed me menu is very affordable.
Petitefat
Food was prepared with fresh ingredients, tortillas and corn chips were fantastic. Usually a bit of a wait to order when busy and wouldnā€™t recommend booking the 8:30 slot if youā€™re planning to order as you go because youā€™ll run out of time before the kitchen closes<br/>Beef cheek tacos and the pork with pineapple were our favourites.<br/>Try the flan!!!!
Michael
This is a hidden gem of ours. Itā€™s a small shop tucked in the industrial area of Kensington. La tortilleria makes all the corn chips for the famous Mexican places (eh. Mamasita). We usually get the amigo platter which is quite reasonable at 25 p/p. Just make sure you say no vegetarian tacos as they are not worth it.
Dani Boudville
Great authentic Mexican cuisine. They make their tortillas in house which you can buy in various grocery stores in Melbourne and they only contain corn and a bit of salt. They are also an entirely gluten free restaurant so you can't bring in your own birthday cakes but they have alternatives. Limited seating so definitely book in advance if you have a large crowd.
Red Mind
As a chef, Iā€™m highly disappointed with this place. Just some boiled chicken and chopped tomato on a tortilla, doesnā€™t make it Mexican at all. The place looks nice and the staff were friendly, but the food doesnā€™t even deserve a zero.
Edgar Darmawan
Was recommended by a Mexican friend and was not disappointed. They sell their tortilla in stores also under the same name as their resto. The guac was nice and the tacos were all very tasty. will be back for more!
Diva Isabel Nebreda
This is a authentic Mexican Restaurant! The Restaurant is small so colourful, make you feel in Mexico, the service is friendly and the food is amazimg, My favourite was the Mezcal Flan for dessert, las carnitas, los frijoles refritos, el guacamole y el alambre! Absolutely delicious!!
Michael O
Wanted to rate higher, honestly. Bit of a paradox here. Tasty authentic Mexican food and the hot sauce, y tu mama tambien it is fine. Ok, the not so cool. Dining furniture, sad and uncomfortable. Waitstaff, mmm. The European woman, leaving that week, great. Our un- dedicated - dedicated waitress, bored and short, and whom we have had before. Perpetually average. Very limited space to dine. This place needs a much more illustrious and roomy venue to perform. Fun foh peeps please?

Eventually made it here, after want to <br/>be try this place for a while. With my trip to Mexico still fresh in the memory,I was hoping for revisiting the authentic flavour of the food. Myself and my <br/> tried nearly all of the tacos they had on offer.<br/>The tortillas were the small corn ones with 2 per serve which is very authentic. Good flavour.<br/>Carne asada was dry reheated steak, meh !<br/>Fish taco not very fresh. Carnitas lacked a little salt.<br/>Salsa rojo was legit. El pastor was ok . Good prompt friendly service. Probably the closest youā€™ll get to authentic flavour in Melbourne.<br/> Was ok . <br/><br/>

Just ordered pork tacos via UberEats and they were disgusting! Big slabs of fat/uncooked pig skin. The meat tasted old/reheated. Not even hubby would eat it. Such a waste of money, ended up in the bin :( So sad, we used to love this place!

I had been waiting well over a year to visit La Tortilleria and it was worth the wait. I took some friends for a Saturday night feed and we left satisfactorily sated. Be sure to book ahead to avoid disappointment. The food and drinks were tasty and the service was good. The barramundi and lamb tostada were standout dishes along with the Flan. I can highly recommend the Smokey Margherita and Horchata. Will be coming back soon for more deliciousness!

The service is really good, the waitresses are friendly and help you out on deciding what to have. Also, they consider your dietary requirements. The food is amazing. 100% Traditional Mexican food.
Michelle
Have been here many times and never been disappointed. One day Iā€™ll actually slow down on the eating and take some pics before the food is demolished. Fast, tasty, traditional Mexican served by great people. It was super busy tonight but the service was still excellent. A special thanks to Megan and all the crew.

LOVED this little Mexican place!! Such a good find in Kensington. Would much prefer to get my taco fix here than any other mex joints in Melbourne. Super affordable and authentic!

Wow! We went for dinner here tonight. I can not wait to go back. The service was friendly and helpful and they took time to go through the menu. The food was so delicious. Super fresh ingredients. The sangria was also fabulous.

So glad to have a good Mexican joint near home. It's very hard to find good Authentic Mexican around Melbourne but glad I've come across La Tortilleria as they are awesome and truly deliver that Mexican taste! We couldn't help but keep on ordering all night long that we were there. Pretty sure we tried everything on the menu twice. Can't wait to come back and I'm pretty certain they make all their tortillas fresh too which is cool.
Giovanna Isabella
I love a bit of fancy dining , but I love homey, fun and vibrant places more! and La tortilleria hits the latter on the head. The restaurant lay out is cool and if you are riding solo and just want a bar seat you have the pleasure of seeing right into the kitchen where the magic is happening. I would say a great spot for a chilled night with friends with some fantastic and flavourful food. We had the Amigos Plato, which was chef's choice and can I say everything was damnn good! like so good I didn't bother getting all the pictures because it was just so mouth watering. Last piece of advice is just go but try and make a booking, it can get busy especially if you are wanting outside and group seating.
Quynh
My second time dining at La Tortilleria, I remember my first time being an enjoyable experience also. Loved the ceviche! The tacos we ordered were also nice and full of flavour. I remember having the flan the first time I went and it was so nice. Pretty cheap and fast meals. Service was okay not super attentive.

Omg little cute little hidden gem it AMAZING!!!!! The food is simple but full of flavor and traditional. Staff and lovely and friendly. Gets busy pretty quick.

My boyfriend and I had been craving Mexican and this was just around the corner of us. Good thing we booked as it was busy. <br/><br/>We started with the guacamole and tortilla chips which were yummy. Then we had our fish, lamb, chicken and both beef tacos. The lamb was the standout however the other tacos were very bland and lacked seasoning so we were disappointed. <br/><br/>Service was ok as well. Maybe I will come back for the lamb tacos but certainly not rushing to come back here. Would be good for takeaway food at home.

Extremely authentic food. Had the ā€œsimilar to Nachosā€. Very good. The Tacos were nice as well. Must try these Mexican food. Have had a great experience and Iā€™m sure Iā€™ll be back.

Absolutely terrible! Not sure what the hype is! We asked for tacos with no onion as my partner has an allergy. What do they bring out... tacos with onions. When we sent the food back the waitress treated us like we were an inconvenience instead of being apologetic. The waitress comes back with the rest of our order which includes corn chips, puts them down and says I no you donā€™t want onion but you canā€™t have these corn chips without onion. Seriously! My partner is allergic! We send them back. The waitress comes out several minutes later with our meal and honestly it was terrible. Probably the worst food I have eaten. Not sure if they gave us the leftover meat from the previous day as payback for returning the meal. Service is a joke. They made us feel guilty for returning food that we originally advised we had an allergy to! Very disappointing

Very popular place. Itā€™s worth booking. Service is good and the food comes out really fast. The tortillas are beautifully made. Cocktails are refreshing.

Nice little place. Started with Chilaquiles with slow cooked pork. Had the fish and chicken tacos which were yummy too. The star of the place was the volcancito!! Will be frothing to have that in the future. Topped it off with their traditional dessert flan with the Cafe de Olla. That was a ripper mix to end the my lunch feast with my dad

Online booking was easy and convenient. However when we arrived, the table that we was given was partially blocking a corridor and felt very disjointed (four of us at a table that was next to a long wall). The waitress recommended the fish taco which I had my eye on. I had concerns about the jalapeno mayo being too spicy and asked for regular mayo- however the small $6 taco that came out was simply just fried fish in a soft taco...no mayo, no salad- it was so disappointing and lacked in flavour. I also had the lamb tostado which not bad but rather small for the $7 charge. Finally, I ordered one of the pork tacos for another $6 which was probably the tastiest of them all but still very small. My friends were also not too excited about their dishes unfortunately, especially as we were looking forwards to the dishes. Service was decent and friendly- I think the food just needs a revamp to improve their portion size/content and flavour! It could be so much better but I left feeling hungry and approx $20 poorer. Maybe this is 'authentic' Mexican food as others have said but I believe I've had better 'Mexican' food elsewhere sadly!

Very authentic Mexican food, probably the most authentic you'll find in Melbourne and reasonably priced. Must try the horchata and the al pastor
Heli Sinnpson
One of my favourite places. Very cute setting, colourful and vibrant, feels like we're not in Australia anymore. Outdoor and indoor seating. Authentic Mexican food, at reasonable prices. Try the drinks as well - horchata and Michelaeda beer!

Not too bad, flavours were pretty good. We had the share plate that was $22 a head and although everything was great, my favourite part had to be the tortilla chips with black bean dip that we got at the very start followed by the pork tacos with pineapple on top. Service was good.

Randomly came by this place on the weekend. Loved the food, the vibe and the service. We had the Gringo, Hongos Quesadilla and the Flan. We would recommend each dish, especially the flan. Definitely coming back to try more of the food šŸ˜

On an ordinary Tuesday, this alluringly colourful Mexican restaurant had finally enticed me enough to join them for an authentic Mexican culinary experience. The raving online reviews had my tastebuds tingling for some tasty tacos.Ā <br/><br/>I opted for the vegan ā€˜just feed me amigos share plateā€™. This turned out to be what can only be described as a stodgy, tasteless, soulless series of courses. The food was devoid of flavour and passion. They must be making a killing because they certainly arenā€™t spending much on fresh ingredients. The disconnect between peopleā€™s reviews of the place and what ended up on my plate, and unfortunately in my mouth, has completely bewildered me. The only common thread between previous reviews and my experience was the ā€˜okā€™ service. I found the wait staff unaccommodating and rude. After asking the waitress for a bit of guacamole to freshen up my three-course bombardment of all things refried beans she barked a very firm ā€˜nup!ā€™ then contemplated her answer and said I could for an extra $6. However, after seeing the amount of vegan cheese they had provided at extra cost I was not about to risk my future house for a drop of smashed avocado. <br/><br/>The vegan quesadillas frijoles is where my culinary hopes and dreams died. The quesadilla I kid you not was literally refried beans squashed into a tortilla with the tiniest sprinkling of vegan cheese. My experience as a whole was, in a word, and I mean this as someone who loves Mexican cuisine, appalling. Save your money and go somewhere else.<br/><br/>Outline of my meal:<br/>First course ā€“ Frijoles Refritos (Dry beans and corn chips) <br/>Second course ā€“ Refried bean quesadillas (literally just beans and a sprinkle of vegan cheese) and bean and mushroom tostadas (a base of beans topped with a bit of mushroom and shredded lettuce)<br/>Third course ā€“ Mushroom taco (actually alright but clouded by previous disappointment at this stage in the meal) hibiscus flower taco (at this point I was just thankful to not be eating anymore beans)<br/><br/>I wish I had taken some pictures to illustrate my disappointing meals. <br/><br/>Disclosure: not everyone at my table got the vegan option but everyone was equally unimpressed with their meals.

Four of us dined there last night. We booked online on the 30th of Aug, well in advance as we wanted to celebrate my sons birthday. I called earlier on the day and spoke to James and asked if we could get a cake but after he checked with someone we were told that they do not allow outside food. Fair enough.. I did go on to ask James if we were to order dessert would they put a candle on it just because we were celebrating a birthday. He said YES, and said that he would be there in the evening and I requested him to please make a note of this in our booking. No problem he assured me.On reaching there and after being seated we were told that today is Mexican Independence day and they have a 5 course set menu. We were told that we were advised about this..... definitely not as had we known we would not have come (don't like set menus) and we explained that we booked online and just got the confirmation from them. We explained we were so disappointed Ā and were not advised about this by James when I spoke to him earlier in the day.We were not given the menu or even shown one, just told that it was special dishes from all over Mexico. NO TACOS...<br/><br/>I feel so bad in saying that this was possibly the worst meal I have eaten. <br/><br/>Course 1, For the four of us 2 tiny bowls of a diced salad and 2 bowls with about 6 or 7 corn chips(most were hard and oily).<br/>Ā  Course 2, Mexican Pizza( if you can call it a Pizza), a maybe 7 or 8 inch tortilla(hard not crunchy) with a bean paste some onion, 2 pieces of something green and some big pieces of white cubed cheese. Only one for the four of us. Each of us got a Ā Having said that it was awful that even if we had more we would not have eaten it.<br/>Ā  Course 3 was the only redeeming course, the Enchiladas,(one per person) which we gobbled down as we were so hungry. <br/><br/>Course 4 was this stew which was all full of fat(pieces of fatty pork belly) and accompanied by 2 round fried tacos, which were soaking in oil. By this time we were soo hungry that the rest of the family ate part of the oily flat tacos as there was nothing else to eat. I could not touch them.<br/><br/>Course 5 was this multi colored jelly, which I did see kids on the next table eating( the adults on that table were eating some sort of pudding in glasses which looked way better that the jelly). Not sure why we were not given a a choice!!! BTW we came prepared to eat their Flan<br/><br/>As for Service- it was so rehearsed, the 2 main staff, Matilda and the male staff member seemed to put on a show. the same dialogues at all tables around us. .The male staff came to us trying to get us to buy some drinks (Tequila shots) which when we refused he did not look at out table. Ā The food was just plonked down on our table , small servings on big plates . My biggest let down for the night- no birthday candle, no acknowledgement, nothing.<br/><br/>Value for money- Can't see how. Four of us got 1 jug of the flavorless watered down drink( (which we so needed to wash down the fat and oil), 2 person tables got the same. 4 of us got 1 pizza, 2 people got the same. We definitely left hungry!!!For $35 per person Ā for this was utter rubbish.Ā <br/><br/>On leaving I expected to be given some discount for the evening, but nothing. The manager Matilda was walking past me after I paid and I had to stop her to talk to her. Told her about my conversation with James regarding the birthday Ā and all I got was a sorry. I did not want to be rude as their Independence day so told her that we will return to try their tacos, BUT ..........<br/><br/>I am attaching few pics as we were so underwhelmed by the food that I did not take pics of the rest of the food.Ā <br/> Please excuse the pic quality as we were shocked with the food Ā quantity and quality<br/>Just as comparison I ate at Fonda and loved the food.......

I've had La Tortilleria before at various markets and festivals, but never had the chance to eat at the main restaurant. We booked for their set menu to celebrate Mexican Independence Day and we were not disappointed. <br/><br/>The venue as others have said, is tiny and buzzing. The team certainly get into the spirit of things! They were accommodating too, allowing me to buy one piece only off the set kids menu instead of the whole thing (my 1 year old would never have been able to eat it all!)<br/><br/>I don't recall the proper names for things, so you will need to forgive me. But I've attached photos of the set menu we had. The star of the show was the stew - the pork was slow cooked to perfection. But we enjoyed every meal that came out, and the jug of hibiscus drink was quite refreshing. <br/><br/>Probably my only complaints were the pic de gallo was not the best I've had, very onion based. And the pace of the courses was a little disjointed. Some came fast, others we had to wait a while. But it was quite busy so I forgive that. We will definitely come back some time soon for tacos!

We decided on having something different this Father's Day. Mexican Food!<br/><br/>It feels like you have just walked into a Mexican family's home when you enter La Tortilleria. The staff are friendly and the service was fantastic given the busy crowd.<br/><br/>We ordered the set menu (6 dishes). We got a unique spread of Mexican food from nachos (saucy nachos) to a whole tray of pork and beef tacos! The flavours were amazing and the tortillas were so fresh and tasty.<br/><br/>I'll definitely be back for more!

Straight up simple Mexican food with delicious flavours. Staff are attentive, food is made fresh and the portion sizes are just right. I'd eat here lots more if I were living closer.

This place is tiny, as are the waitresses. But like the wait staff, La Tortilleria is warm, inviting and fun. Our food came promptly, despite the fact that it was packed with the lunch rush. Our waitress (I forget her name, but remember her engaging demeanor) was engaging and interesting. Everyone was just so friendly it felt less like lunch in a strange restaurant and more like an excellently prepared meal with a longtime friend. <br/>So I haven't talked much about the food. My fish tacos were flavorful, a real mouth-gasm. My wife and I shared a beautiful melted cheese queso dish wrapped around corn tortillas of their own creation. <br/>Overall, I say if it were legal or possible for me to marry a restaurant I would. Just don't tell my wife. šŸ¤£šŸ¤“šŸ¤—

The portions of the food were very poor considering the high price. We started with an 8aud guacamole which had no more than one avocado total. The michelada was not even garnished. The service was terrible and poor.<br/>Nopal is not cooked well it's raw and the 5 aud Mexican coffee is approx 30ml.<br/><br/>Would not recommend at all. There are much better Mexican restaurants in better looking locations like Hello Jose and Hotel Jesus
MelBVegFoodie
Really tasty clean food with great service. Had a great selection of vegetarian food too. My favorite was the cheese fondue and mushroom tostada. Wish there were more dessert options. Highly recommend! :)

Decided to try this place for the first time after seeing so many past review. Drove 25km on a Sat night and to say we were disappointed is an understatement.<br/>1. Service was arrogant and rude. We ordered 3 items to take away and when we were told that they couldn't do tostada takeaway the order reduced to two (obviously) and my husband was asked "is that all?"<br/>2. The nacho was soaking wet. It is the worse nacho we have ever eaten and my husband is Spanish! It was like eating a wet sponge, mind you we ate it straight way in the car parked next to the restaurant.<br/>3. Taco was tiny. It was like eating a snack.<br/><br/>Will give you guys 2.5 - 3* for taste but overall we will not be back. Pity as we were testing the place out to book future family functions for our extended families who are all South Americans.<br/><br/>Ended up driving to Hello Jose in West Melbourne afterwards and it was a world of difference. Great friendly service and amazing food. Tostada, corn etc... was delicious and they do takeaway.

Food ordered:Ā <br/>Prijoles Repritos (v): Refried beans topped with freso cheese & served with totopos (tortilla chips) ($7)<br/>Gringa: Al Pastor free-range pork with melted cheese & pineapple in between two tortillas ($9.50)<br/>Volcanito: A volcanic explosion of refried beans & tender beef chunks in melted cheese, on top of a tostada & topped with guacamole and spicy salsa ($7.50)<br/>Flautas (Barbacoa): Ā A rolled up tortilla with slow-cooked lamb, fried & topped with fresh lettuce, crema & house salsa ($6)<br/>Quesadillas (Tinga de pollo): pulled chicken & chipotle ($6).Ā <br/><br/>Food:Ā <br/>A lot of meh - the most disappointing was the the prijoles repritos which were too grainy for me and the melted cheese only took up a small quarter of the whole serving. I expected a lot more cheese :( .Ā Favourite dish was definitely the gringa - the pineapple was a fresh surprise!Ā <br/>Unfortunately overall this wasn't the kind of Mexican I was used to (I like the mainstream mexican quesadillas) so I was a little let down. Ā <br/><br/>Service:Ā <br/>NB: you definitely need a booking if you're hoping to eat at 7pm.Ā <br/>Furthermore, the service was lovely! The waitress offered us more totopos (free!) when she saw that we still had quite a decent amount of refried beans left over. Very kind of her.Ā <br/><br/>The food was just enough for two people but we still escaped to Maccas down the road to grab some fries.

Melbourne's most authentic Mexican dining experience. Don't believe me? Well, most of Melbourne's Mexican restaurants now use La Tortilleria's tortillas - and that's saying something. <br/><br/>I'd recommend anything on the menu here, but with a special shout out for the flan - so, so good! You can book in advance, and I'd strongly recommend doing so.
Pass The Plate
To say I was excited to learn of this place is an understatement. I had always seen their gluten free tortillas at my local supermarket but had no idea that they were based and had a restaurant so close to me in Kensington. Mind Blown!<br/><br/>I couldn't wait to get down here and sample their homemade tortillas and corn chips and I'm so glad I did. The traditional mexican food is second to none. The nachos and tacos pair beautifully with the housemade Aqua Fresca's which are so easily to down. It's hard to stop yourself when the food and drink is so good. I drank a whole jug to myself (luckily it's non- alcoholic or I would have been walking home)<br/><br/>I would highly recommend La Tortilleria to anyone wanting wholesome traditional Mexican food.<br/><br/>Standout Dish - Chocolate Flan Special of the day, Pulled Pork Nachos

One of best and truly authentic Mexican restaurant, I would say in Melbourne. The dishes are so flavourful. One of the best food experience. Try to order 2-3 dishes and enjoy with beer.šŸ˜‡

After reading many reviews my friend and I decided to visit this place for dinner last week. Food was very average and all the different dishes we tried were quite similar in taste. The waitresses were sweet and attentive however the owner was not so hospitable and quite cocky. Not the most terrible place to eat but not somewhere where we would dine again.

La Tortilleria never fails to disappoint. Having visited Mexico last year and experienced the real deal, this place comes very close! Love that they take bookings, relaxed atmosphere with cheap and cheerful food. I always bring out of town visitors here and it never fails to disappoint

I thought this place was disappointing. Their tortillas are delicious but I found their actual food to be quite greasy and dull. The banquet you have to get for a group of 6+ is a rip off and forced me to get things I'd never get and miss out on some dishes I really wanted to try. The food seemed to lack freshness and colour, no veggies or sides to go with fairly greasy and sloppy mains made for a bit of a disappointing experience.

Love this cute little house turned into a Mexican restaurant, need to make a booking always a full house. Great traditional Mexican food and the drinks šŸø are awesome for a Mexican experience

Visited for a sunday lunch with a group of friends. Food was delicious enough, coffee was great, and the orange flan was fabulous (so I heard). Service was OK

Came here on taco tuesday for a cheap meal. Was left very disappointed, plain and bland tacos. The vego option came with mushrooms, spinach and some sourcream on top. That was it.<br/><br/>However the atmosphere and service was great!

I visited this cute little Mexican restaurant with my work friends. We ordered from the taco Tuesday menu, though I wished I could order from their regular menu. Service was surprisingly very quick and the staff are quite friendly and lively. I enjoyed the vibes of restaurant and all their cute decorations. We ordered the pulled pork nachos and they were quite soggy, I had hoped for an explosion of flavour and the nachos did not meet that expectation. The pork was amazingly soft and juicy though! The tacos were okay/good, but again lacked that special oomph. <br/>I ordered the horchata drink, it was so good I had two glasses. Delicious šŸ˜‹ <br/>

The food was slow in coming and two of us had to wait 15 minutes for the others food to arrive, but nothing can beat this- since when is a mojito made with tequilla? Unbelievable- and never again.

The dishes were hit & miss. The volcancito tostada was my favourite but it didn't have much zip - bring on the burn! The chilaquiles were so boring, I could have made better myself if I just bought their corn chips. My partner ordered the alambre, which was apparently worthy of a return but he wanted more spice & he doesn't he like spice that much! The drinks were fabulous (I recommend the smoky margarita). I do want to go back & choose some of their other dishes but I will be careful what I order.

We have been going to this cosy place for at least 4 years, and the food is really authentic and yummy! They recently changed the menu and some of the new options are exceptional! Service is quick and friendly. It can be a tad tricky to get a table due to the place being quite tiny, but they usually try accommodate people at the bar while waiting for a table. I wish they had churros available, in addition to their lovely flan!

Want to try some great Mexican food.. definitely try this place it won't disappoint! The tortilla chips are made there, the nachos and tacos will leave you so full, they're delicious šŸ˜‹
