Review Rice Workshop - Melbourne

Alvi
The staffs at Rice Workshop Chinatown are friendly and recommended their signature dish for us so we bought and tasted them. It was quite a disappointment. The grilled chicken curry rice was not hot . In fact, the curry sauce was moderately warm and poured onto the cold grilled chicken. The grilled chicken was tasteless. The chicken karaage was good but the sauce is too little . Overall, the food was not as good as expected.

Fastest Rice Workshop in the southern hemisphere I would suggest. Order your food at the far end, collect and proceed down the counter to pay. Friendly service and served up in two mins. Good size portions. Limited seating down stairs but they have seating upstairs. I ordered the spicy chicken terriaky and all was well. Well priced. Will return again.

Cheap but you get what you pay for, uninspired and bland flavours you get at all the cheap Japanese takeaway shops. Asked for mild curry but got spawn of satan level heat. The Udon soup base was so hot that by the time it has cooled enough to be eaten all the ingredients were soggy mush. Probably won't return to this particular store.

The staff were very friendly and a decent fast meal for cheap prices. The meal was filling and delicous and worth coming to for a quick meal. :)

Good value also delicious Japanese place. Athletic rice bowl everything was great.

LOVE this little restaurant. I stumbled upon this restaurant in 2016 because I love matcha and wanted to try the ice cream. It did NOT disappoint. Seriously one of my favourite ice creams. The rice bowls here are also excellent, this time I enjoyed the Katsu curry with tempura prawn and an egg. There was nothing to fault as usual. This place is well priced, the staff are helpful, and it’s in a great location. Always love coming here when I’m in Melbourne.

Really delicious speedy meals. We stumbled upon this place and found it very satisfying. Try adding the egg to your curry rice to up the pleasure. Also dont miss out the "crab ball" filled w pure crab meat. Pure pleasure. Their yuzu juice complements the meal really well.
Nick Montgomery
Maybe I just chose badly but don't get the udon with (vegetarian) tonkotsu broth - was closer to Continental packet soup with almost no veg or other things added. Better places around for the same money!

How on earth you get 4.6 out of 5 is beyond me. The food is not fresh, cold chicken, cold salmon...for an order for 5 people to take only 10min to have ready tells you everything. The rice was not fresh, and the salad smelt off. Not a good experience.<br/>

hello. rice workshop is solely the reason why i live. it is delicious. i would eat your chicken katsu curry any day of the week, nay any minute of the day. i am obsessed. ily.

I absolutely love Japanese food, so to have it served so conveniently and so quickly in venues such as Rice Workshop make it even better. The quality of the bowls is so good, and this is my favourite location as I'm often in the city, and I like that you can dine in. It's small, but there is more room upstairs. <br/><br/>The selection of bowls is quite good, and I chose a raw salmon bowl. It was fresh and delicious with plenty of rice, salad and pickled ginger. The addition of wasabi works so well with the salmon, and I found it to be a fantastic lunch option. <br/><br/>I also had an okonomyaki stick from the fried selection, and it was crispy and tasty. I could have eaten ten of them!! <br/><br/>Service was prompt, and the staff were really sweet. It was quite busy, but they were still efficient and my meal didn't take long at all. Rice Workshop is a fabulous option for a quick but healthy lunch, and is definitely a favourite with my family.

Very amazing beef bowl! I really missed gyudon and felt like being in Japan again. A quick meal, good price and delicious!

An amazing value for money, food tastes great and fresh, plus they offer free sauces to everyone unlike all other cheap food outlets

Went with a friend. The service was polite but can be more efficient. I stood at the counter waiting to order, and the staff lady was right in front of me talking to her friend. My friend, who ordered directly before me, had her food served before my order was taken. Had the chicken karrage, portion was decent and food was good. It was worth ordering. My friend ate the salmon sashimi rice and there were bones in her sashimi, which was not a good experience unfortunately.

Service was garbage, the young staff love to chat to eachother, they don't want to offer service.<br/>They are rude and I ordered about 30$ worth of food paid for it then sat down and ate it. Then after the meal I got up and tried to order dessert icecream green tea and they refused to let me order one because " of the eptos limit" she was very condescending. I spent 30$ there All ready and was not allowed to get dessert because it was a separate payment. Absolutely ridiculous.<br/><br/>The staff really need more customer service training and if you spend over a certain amount and 5 mins later ask for dessert there should be a exception, as there is no point ordering it all in one go and having your icecream melt
Hung Huynh
Super efficient restaurant. From the great service while ordering to efficiency of my Chicken Curry katsu bowl coming out so quickly and it tasting fresh and hot. I was very happy with the whole experience.

Love the flavour, portions and value for money of Rice Workshop - definitely my go to for Japanese! Also, their soft serve black sesame and matcha ice creams are the best, and only for $2!
Jeffry
Rice workshop introduces itself as a Japanese rice bowl bar that offers quick Donburi (rice bowls) and bento boxes at great value. It has many stores around Melbourne but this particular one has always been in Chinatown for more than 5 years now. We were recently visit to try their winter menu, Spicy Pork Belly bowl.<br/><br/>Yay: Spicy Pork Belly bowl, Grilled Teriyaki Salmon<br/>Nay: Matcha soft serve was slightly too soft<br/>Rate: 3.5/5
Split The Bill
Super fast service, very tight spacing and it’s always a bonus if you get a seat! Food is made fresh and is tasty. I always get the edamame but always try something different when I visit. 😃

The food was very tasty and super quick I didn’t have to wait so long the staff was very attentive and the best part is it’s very affordable
Tee Tr
Fast and friendly service. Nothing too fancy but a decent feed at a good price point. Good potion size which is always amazing when starving. Good arrange of sauces
Gee
This is one of those cheap and cheerful places that’s popular because of its location (me thinks). I went for the large chicken katsu curry at $11. The chicken itself was fried close to death and the curry was a bit gluggy but it was a decent sized serving. Wouldn’t rush back here.
Bernard Haylen
I am a vegetarian so it’s hard to appreciate international cuisines sometimes due to lack of options but I was pleasantly surprised here. They didn’t have many options but the ones they did were good. I actually finished my plate and completely enjoyed it. The flavours were good and the dishes were fresh.

3.5. Got a curry katsu don from Uber eats as I was craving for it. It was average, an unfair disadvantage as I had one of the best tonkatsu yesterday elsewhere so in comparison, this one was oily, thinner and didn't taste as good.<br/><br/>If it was a stand alone review, then yes it was still enjoyable and curry was nice and a lil spicy which was great to drench the rice and meat in.
Burgers Of Melbourne
Loved! I hadn't been to a Rice Workshop before but am now hooked! The food here is not overly complex but done extremely well. Yum flavours throughout and enough variety to visit frequently and always have something to enjoy.
Sammy
Quick delicious Japanese eatery. Service is friendly and fast. I would normally go for their chicken karage with spicy mayo. There are also free sauce and condiments at the cashier, the sesame sauce is a must add.
Cookielessvee
I do enjoy the original beef with udon which has a slight sweetness to it. A generous anount of beef and the onions in the soya broth are great. A wide selection of dishes and nice service.
Grace Koh
I’m never disappointed by Rice Workshop, the workers are always super efficient and it’s the perfect quick and cheap lunch in the city. Highly recommend anything with the chicken karage!

Right in the middle of Chinatown you can find this little gem. The restaurant offers modern Japanese cuisine in a bright and spacious environment. <br/><br/>I ordered the Fresh Salmon and Kimchi Beef. Only had to wait a few minutes even tho it was very busy.<br/>Both servings were quite big but the Kimchi Beef has to be my favorite one. The meet was sliced extremely thin and so tender. Together with the Kimchi on top it was just perfect.<br/><br/>I also tried the Matcha Ice Cream which was really good as well. The serving tho was so big that I could hardly finish it before it started melting. <br/><br/>All in all a good modern Japanese restaurant with very reasonable prices.
Ellieeee
Their miso ramen was very flavourful and filling (also their greentea icecream) but their teriyaki chicken had a bit of an odor that made it difficult for me to enjoy and finish the dish.
Sisi Love Food & Wine
3.5 star, pity here not allowed me to rate half. I had spicy ramen, price was cheaper than other ramen places , taste was average, it would be good if they added a ramen egg that make this more authentic. I surprised to see other rice dishes many are under $10, that’s not many could find these prices these days.
Ozzy Kunnu
In Simple Words 'FANTASTIC'<br/><br/>Eating Japanese at is a bloody Yummy Deal.<br/><br/>Ordered a Katsu Chicken Ramen in a Pork Broth and Teriyakki Chicken with Rice and Salad. Both were the Dishes Of The Day. The broth was rich in flavor and Katsu Chicken was perfectly crispy. Teriyaki chicken was so tender and super moist.<br/><br/>Not much for Vegetarian or Vegans to choose from but it's definitely a haven for Meat lovers.<br/><br/>Attendants are attentive but not too friendly probably because they ain't very fluent with English.<br/><br/>Definitely returning.<br/>
Willtravelforfood17
Had their chicken kaarage bowl with spicy sauce. The chicken was juicy on the inside and crunchy on the outside and seasoned well. The rice was soft and fluffy. I just wish there was gravy/sauce in there (besides the mayo) that would give this dish some moisture. The green tea sesame twist soft serve was delicious and great for dessert on a warm day.
Quince And Cheese
Have been here for dinner as well as their popular green tea soft serve (only $2!). Not sure about the quality for that price, but flavour is nice - not too sweet, not too bitter from the matcha, perfect for a cooling treat on a hot day. As for mains, I love the build your own bowl option with add-ins (like veg tempura fritters) from behind the counter. And such a steak at roughly $10 a meal!
Khorry Sila
We had the salmon teriyaki bowl. It’s actually pretty nice with a reasonable price caused they give a big salmon, but too less rice so if i eat 1 is not enough when i eat 2 is too much. 😹😹
Prof. Pinky@LunchLab
My score 4.0 stars (for matcha soft serve).  J & I had sushi for lunch today at SKS in Little Collins St & then wandered up to RW for a soft serve.  We love matcha ice cream & had seen some good reviews (thanks > Diva I N/Lizzie Eats/Quinn/Kimberley L/Some Bunee L F) - they weren't wrong!  Crunchy green waffle cone & generous serve of nicely flavoured delight (& not too sweet) - a bargain at $2.50!  Unfortunately, the young woman serving said they don't do black sesame anymore???  I hope I heard this wrong, or it was just a one off occasion( or just this outlet) - oh well, the matcha version was great so I was happy.  Will be back here (or another outlet) for a quick lunch to try the RW savoury menu sometime - quite a lot of people happily eating & it was after 2.30pm on a Monday...
Sunny Days Melbourne
Rice Workshop is a fantastic franchise. Having been to a couple of their other branches, I can safely say that each place serves consistent, reasonably priced delicious food with a smile (most of the time). <br/><br/>For today, we had the teriyaki chicken udon. No complaints about the udon - it's always fresh and springy. The teriyaki chicken was slightly salty but this was neutralised when mixed in with the broth. <br/><br/>We also had the charred chicken curry bowl. When they say charred, they mean charred. The chicken was beautifully prepared and that curry sauce....I could slurp it all day! <br/><br/>Rice Workshop hits all the right notes for us and we will return over and over again.
Diva Isabel Nebreda
I came here For recommendations of my friends I am not disappointed. The food is very tasty You have a good selection of sauces. I tried the beef wagyu was very good with a melon soda wow That soda is Amazing. But the start of the night was the matcha Ice cream Very creamy and taste. I will come back again and again and also the price was accepted
Lizzie Eats Melbourne
😱Lizzie’s first impression: a go to place for a quick feed and for my matcha ice cream <br/><br/>🍩Lizzie enjoyed: my favourite is the udon here - it’s affordable and easy. There’s never a line and the service is quick. They have the yummiest matcha ice cream or sesame ice cream. <br/><br/>🍅Lizzie did not enjoy: the meats are relatively fatty. <br/><br/>🥇Lizzie rates overall: a great place if you’re pressed for time - you can also buy little side dishes like takoyaki balls or croquettes.
Quinn
I love the concept of rice workshop. They have rich and delicious ice cream as well! I love that their menu is customisable and I can choose whatever I want, which is fun! And the price is cheap too considering their location! Friendly service everytime I was there and very chill vibe upstairs.
Georgia Marett
Good for a cheap bite but quite salty. It is quick though and you can either take away or eat in. I had the teriyaki chicken bowl and it was nice. The option of brown rice would be good.
Luper
Simple, delicious, and affordable food that I can easily recommend to anyone.<br/><br/>Staff are friendly and helpful. Avialible facilities clean and easily accessible.
Kimberley Leggett
Quick, cheap, convenient - the trifecta that pleases any uni student. I remember visiting Rice Workshop several times with friends and would have a bowl of rice with beef/poached egg in the usual 'donburi' style - good flavours and seasoning for a fraction of the price of an upmarket Japanese restaurant. My favourite indulgence was the matcha soft serve. There is a reason why you see countless green iceberg swirls walking around ChinaTown. Get on it!
Juerong Qiu
I have been to this restaurant many times. Very good price and fulfilling foods. Original beef is very tasty but teriyaki chicken is a bit salty <br/>
Deniz
The food here not only comes in very generous and filling portions, but is also incredibly affordable. I love their ramen bowls, but their udon bowls are also especially delicious. I prefer the udon just a little bit more. This food is seriously awesome comfort food for a typical cold winter day in Melbourne. It generally hasn’t been too crowded at the times I have visited here, so the service is usually pretty quick. I think it’s a nice little place to get good food away from the crowds and noise of China Town.

Great place, definitely recommended! I had the udon curry noodles and it was delicious. Good selection of Japanese style food and side dishes
Tammy
Yummy rice bowls at an affordable price!! Only paid $8+ for it. Highly recommend it. Service was good and fast. Location was convenient, 10min walk from H&M at Collins street

Great Chicken Katsu Curry. Will be back definitely. The Pork Katsu Bento is delicious and the Karaage chicken is flavoursome. Customer service is perfect. Polite lady in the counter taking order

My friends and I were finding a lunch place and decided to try this. It was beyond our expectation. Good price, good taste, good value for money!
Claire Lee
I came here with my friends for lunch. Good for its price. The sauce tasted good with rice. The potion of the meat is good. Chicken is not that juicy but it’s okay.
SHerrii Lee
Value for money! Had a bowl of beef rice with egg. It's cheap but still taste fine and the portion size was good too. The place was kinda tidy but not super clean. Also great option for takeaway.
Rajneel Anand

Nice and fast. Always very nice environment. I’ve been here since I was in high school. The food is always fresh and good. I really like it. I recommend this place seems like a lot of people don’t know this place:)

Amazing foods and place for our environment with many people smiles and laughing. Workers are really nice to make the food taste like homemade.

Nice curry after renovating. Very good worthwhile to come back. Cheap and delicious. Well cooked. Very healthy. Fair portion, very fulfilling. A good outing day after OET exam. Lunch at rice workshop. is the best. Recommended definitely

There is delicious food here and I will come again.I love Fried chicken rice here. It's cheap and good. One can eat very full.Next time I'll try the hot spring eggs.
Ahnaf
Amazing food for decent price. The Rice bowls are the best. Preferably the chicken teriyaki curry bowls. They offer a tender meat that goes well in the sauce and Rice offered. One of the best things about this place is the free pickled radish and ginger and also the sauce on offer.
Zhiting Angela Chen
Ordered the beef tasted good and have a tiny of sweetness in it, absolutely worth coming back over and over again. Staff is kinda friendly and environment is good with music
Caroline White
A very good example of a very bad restaurant. KFC would have been a better choice. RUDEST STAFF AND WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER!  The lady at cashier who took my order didn't greet me and just nodded at me which made me a bit confused. When I got my takeaway ramen, it contained weird things in it that was not supposed to be there. Their kitchen is most likely not clean.
张雪晴
The Pork Katsu Bento is very very delicious!Love it so much!Another guy who came with me ordered Chasu Noodle Bowl, and that one was also very tasty. Like this place, and I will definitely come back in the future.
Lauren Salter
Fast service, delicious food, teriaki chicken was super tender and the sauce was great. For the rice point it hits the spot was pleasantly surprised.
Bryce Keuris
I had ordered a grilled terriyaki salmon meal amd it was delicious! Very good for the price you pay. Would recommend people to come here for some japanese style rice dishes.
Quyen Ly
Yummy food, affordable price. I ordered the deep fried chicken curry with udon and i love it 💜💜. Staff are friendly and food comes pretty promptly no matter how long the queue was
Matthewjsb
Great food, I want to try the rest of the things on the menu because they all look so good! It was also great value and a great atmosphere. Staff are nice people. Service is very quick and efficient.

great atmosphere, lovely staff, some spicy mayonnaise to kick start your evening. i just want free ice cream yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet<br/>

Had the tofu curry udon and was amazing for the price! Added some spicy mayo which was free (along with a bunch of other options) and was absolutely delicious, would get again.

Affordable and fast service, great for a quick lunch fix. Big serving portions.<br/>My favourite has to be the chicken karage with curry rice. Amazing combo.
翁凡舒
Very nice food and nice background music. Highly recommend spicy teriyaki chicken. The serve is quick and staffs are all friendly. My friend and I both ordered spicy teriyaki chicken
Karina Elliott
Saw this place as we were walking through Chinatown and it caught our eyes as it was a Japanese option. Lovely authentic bowls, the regular filled me up
Saran Duggal
Loved this place for their polite and accomodating staff...also the food is well sufficient for budget and great in taste...will surely be back on my next visit to the city<br/>
Mindy T Nguyen
I had chicken katsu curry which is tasty and well-decorated. The service is quick and staffs are friendly. One point needed to improve is the amount of curry sauce. I wish it could be more to fill up all the amount of rice.
Bie
Nice place!! We had the Original Beef Curry and the Chicken Tonkatsu Curry. My beef curry is a little sweet but I don't mind. The bowl is so big for me that I think I will be full for the whole afternoon and evening. Very fast serving time and good service from the staffs. Although the shop is a little bit small but people mostly takeaway or they will finish the bowl very quickly. On overall I think this is a good place to have lunch.
NoCapsicumPlease
The queue can be very disorganised and messy as people don’t where to go, where to order, especially for those who are first timers. Overall the food is nice, there’s more room upstairs as well
Tanya Campos
Looooove this bright and vibrant little place! I tried the Angus Beef Bento. The beef was very tender and flavorful, and the side yakitori, salad, dumpling, scallop roll and corn were all so delightful!😍
Chinyui Pun
Very good taste and easy to find. Most of the meal are under $10. Excellent price for this quality of food!<br/>Portion is good, place is clean, staff are nice.<br/>Situated in a convenient place, service is fast enough for lunch.<br/>Overall very good experience. Would definitely recommend a meal here for all who are interested.

Excellent price for this quality of food!<br/>Portion is good, place is clean, staff are nice.<br/>Situated in a convenient place, service is fast enough for lunch.<br/>Overall very good experience. Tried the roasted wagyu beef rice, it's tasty and it costs just 9.90!<br/>Would definitely recommend a meal here for all who are interested.

Fast service and nice food! Just nice the portion. Crowded even during weekday lunch hour. Wide range of Japanese food for you to choose, they even have dessert.
Kelly Suen
Great food great taste great curry great egg great beef not too salty not too sweet just right the taste and cheap price will come back next week or next next week
Ryan Osmond
For the main course, we order original beef bowl, chashu pork ramen and grilled teriyaki salmon and all of it is not a disappointment although for the curry croquet is taste just ok. We also get a free ice cream, thank you!
Ivan Lee
Fantastic value for the bowls (order the large), would come again to try the rest. I had a really good beef bowl and the curry Udon was hearty for winter.
Shareen Chan
Had their chicken katsu curry udon. Their curry was good, and for a slow eater, everything was still warm by the time I was done! Price point was great too..
Olive Sundays
Rice workshop is good place to pop in for a quick lunch or dinner and get a rice bowl that tastes yum on the cheap. Recently Michelin star chef Masahiko Yomoda has joined forces with Rice Workshop to create a special truffle wagyu donburi (rice bowl) for under $10. Now that’s good value. Rice Workshop - truffled wagyu rice bowls
MILTON
Came here during lunch time, and must I say this place was all over the place. There was no proper line. People who ordered their meal had got it taken by the guy before them. There was no real care in customers here. I’m quite observant, but what I saw made me quite frustrated as staff just worked as robots. Without caring about customers and the overall system of things.<br/>I ordered unadon, was average. When I went to pay the girl at cashier was playing with her phone, I realised it was more important for her to finish sending her text then serve me. With blank emotions and not a single word spoke, she took my money without a thank you.<br/>Sat down and the tables were so messy, peoples meals still on table, wondering where’s the clean up. Sigh. Disorientated.<br/>In need of proper management and people that care about their job.
Reinaldy Marcelino Mokaliran
Friendly staff good food oriental japanesse food. I just need my ice cream please i need 60 more characthers to get 1 soft ice cream yeayyyyy

Rice Workshop is an established institution in Melbourne and the one in Chinatown has been around for more than five years. Famous for their Japanese inspired donburi (rice bowls) and bento boxes, the food at Rice Workshop is tasty, fast and great value.
Aki
The only thing that I dislike the most may is the miso soup of their ramen - very plain and flavorless like water. Other dishes have been fine... But look, it is always hard to flaw an eatery that serves a decent dish with a big menu at such an economic price.<br/>Their waygu don served with an egg with generous serving of meat under 10 dollars. Greentea softserve was great too and it defo cures my occasional cravings of Matcha.
Henry Wong
I came here on a Sunday after being intrigued by their free icecream offer. It's a small shop with both upstairs and downstairs available for seating. The area for ordering was on the narrow side but is appropriate given the space they are working with.<br/><br/>I ordered the chicken katsu bento box and my girflriend had the unagi (eel) bento box. The size of the meal was surprisingly small although the taste was reasonable. Personally, the unagi tasted better than the chicken katsu. The chicken was on the dry side with quite a large serving of sauce, which was on the salty side. The teriyaki chicken skewer in the bento tasted good but was unfortunately on the cold side.<br/><br/>Overall, it is a reasonable choice for lunch! 😄<br/><br/>
Chelene Indriani
I loved the wagyu truffle donburi. Much more delicious than I expected it would be. Will come again next time.<br/><br/>The chargrilled chicken curry was ok.
Mriganka Sarma
Awesome varieties of rice bowls and ramens. My favorite is the char grilled chicken curry. Katsu and tempora are decent. Matcha soft serve is, well, matcha..
Mikezhou09
The food was absolutely delicious and I would recommend people to come and have a try! Their chicken kathy and karage was magnificent and had great flavor and taste.

Amazing food!!! You can just taste that amazing beef in the first bite. Increase the quantity though then it will be totally perfect... have a great day <br/>
