Review The Hotel Albion - Melbourne

Susan susan
Used to always have good meals, one of our regular pubs. After new management, we tried the burgers and could not finish them. Both beef patties half cooked with raw buts in the middle and had big chunks of tendons and fatty bits. Very disappointed. We definitely not going back.

Amazing quality food, friendly staff, spacious seating

I used to be a big fan of this pub! They could really deliver on the pub classics, great Parma’s, good quality steaks and a to die for sticky date pudding were just a few of my faves, however a change in management over recent weeks has also meant a change in chefs and I have to say the new menu is very underwhelming. Was very disappointed with my recent dinner, the food has definitely gone down not only in value but in flavor. Both my husband and I barely finished our meals. We also decided to cancel our usual sticky date pudding order as we couldn’t take any more disappointment. I’m sorry to say we won’t be returning.

Really nice food, cosy and comfortable seating. They also have a great deal for happy hour and great weekly specials with meals. It’s nice to walk into a restaurant with happy customer photos on the wall. Spacious enough to bring a pram also when I dined previously.

Quick drink service by Shawn then an entree of the freshest salt & pepper Calamari that was not over-the-top seasoned, fresh crisp chips & a light salad. With Sarah efficiently removing my empty plate unobtrusively. All very reasonably priced. Great ambience. I will be back 😁

nice happy hour deals, though food was a dissapointment and not very good value. Steak was way overcooked and portions pretty small for the price. Homely atmosphere. New owner so hopefully they improve over time. Wont be going back anytime soon though. Service was reasonable though staff still have a lot to learn.. like ensure tables have cutlery before the food comes out and dont just shove a handfull of cutlery on one end of a group table.

A friendly atmosphere for social drinks. The staff are courteous, efficient and knowledgeable. Better still, the menu is well supported with top quality food. I'll be back to enjoy their cuisine, for sure. Reasonable prices make this venue a Must Visit.

The Hotel Albion used to be one of the places we go for our “Pub” steak nights, when Matt Black the previous owner was still running the show. Back then, the quality and standard of the weekly steak special was well priced and good. For $17 you got a 350gm porterhouse with salad and chips. The meat was of good quality and well cooked. But unfortunately things have changed with the new management. Cost cutting is evident, especially with the quality of the beef. Four of us ordered the steak special tonight, each steak was haphazardly cut, full of fat and gristle. It just did not look or taste appetising. The cooking was also hit and miss. They now have it at $20 with a glass of mediocre house wine. This was our second shot after the new management took over, and I will say it will be our last. Better weekly steak special to be had at the Railway Hotel in Ferrars Street.

Love the fact that I can bring my dog along, have a few pots and hang out with the locals. The slight renovation has given the old “Albion” life.

This is a pub where locals join strangers and are made to feel welcome.

The plates I have ordered and observed are generous in size and are flavoursome.

The staff are there to assist.

We as a group go weekly some for the Thursday night steak, terrific, or the fish and chips or???

No one of us (10 or so) have complained about the food or service, go North Port.

Friday Lunch saw the North Port Hotel’s Cubano sandwich stand out as something different to try on the menu. Very nice, with roast pork being one of those meats that tends to be a little dry, offset by the cheese, ham and sliced pickles (a few more pickles could have been good too).

Great friendly service too, I think it will fall quickly into the Friday lunch rotations.

Unfortunately this pub is not family friendly and kids under 10 are not welcome. Have given it a fair go three times and whilst the ambience has significantly improved, the food has taken a dive and the Parma is just no where near as good which would be ok if the menu had improved but it just hasn’t. Kids get yelled at directly which just isn’t cool. Sad as I wanted to love it, name change and all:(

Great value for money. Delicious parmas and a huge range to choose from. Their drinks are cheap.

The atmosphere is a bit "cheap-pub". The staff are friendly.

Last month saw the opening of the highly anticipated The Albion. A beautiful space boasting a heritage-listed façade which dates back to 1869, The Albion is a three-level complex. Diners are rewarded for their staircase climbing endeavours (or, there’s always the lift) with a striking rooftop overlooking Melbourne city views.

Accompanying the stunning ambience is a menu perfect for sharing which is versatile enough to take you from a drink at the bar over a couple of snacks to an indulgent dinner of generous grazing plates with mates.

Really lovely staff and great atmosphere. Really nice big servings of food at a good price. My only suggestion would be to be clearer about the ingredients in the meals written on the menu. I ordered the spaghetti bolognese and unfortunately it was completely full of parsley which tastes absolutely disgusting to me and ruined the meal. Everything else was great it was just very disappointing that I couldn’t enjoy my main.
Linda
Take your money and spend it elsewhere. Arrogant service and a lack of gratefulness for your business. Worse of all, was the food. Overcooked protein, soggy chips, bland and poorly dressed salad. With a plethora of quality pubs around, why do it to yourself?!
Speccy
Saganaki was amazing for entree. We really enjoyed the duck & the steak was really well cooked. Old school pub, serving good honest food. Aesthetically nothing fancy, but good honest food & a nice quiet setting for families. Staff were lovely. Chips could be crispier & unfortunately don't have sweet potato options..

I love the good food there. It's very filling and delicious. It is a spacious pub with a great service. The bar serves good range of beer on tap too.

Friendly staff, and both my partner and I left satisfied and very full! Mexican parma was excellent for me, a great concept to flavour parmas in assorted ways. Sour cream, guacamole a little overdone, and turned into a bit of a slop. My partners steak was of moderate grade. Prawn cutlet starters were on point. Overall a good pass and a good night.

Love coming here for locals nights (Monday and Tuesday), mains are only $15.50. Favourites of ours are the pork loin, barramundi, lamb shank and the seafood risotto. The creme brûlée is delicious and creamy (and only $7.90). Attached are pictures of the current menu!

Advertises Parma Wednesdays on the board. Makes no reference to being an evening only offer. Staff were friendly, management made no offer to honour the cheaper price, even though the board doesn't say anything about evenings.

Mixed range of meals ordered across the table. Food was ok. A cheaper lunchtime menu is available.

As a lunch group we won't be back for a while

Went on Friday night using Entertainment book voucher for a BOGOF meal. Have to say was a most enjoyable meal. The restaurant /bar area is fairly basic but neat and clean. The staff was super nice and pleasant. We had the Barramundi and the Chicken Saltimbocca ( chicken wrapped with crispy prosciutto and topped with crispy sage leaves in butter ) with a serve of hot chips. We even ended up having dessert ....the Semifreddo which was very good. The best chips ever and the 2 mains were one of the best meals I have eaten. The only downside would be that you have to get your own cutlery and the broccolini with my fish was cold and mushy. But overall excellent food and service. I did notice some others having Pizzas ( looked very nice) and realised they have a friday night special for $10 pizzas which we will be back for. Many thanks to the pleasant young female staff member for her great customer service. Will recommend for a good hearty meal. I will be back!!!!

Came with a scoopon voucher. Had a porterhouse steak with mash potato and fried squid rings as entre. Ordered medium rare for the steak, came out medium well done. Mash potato was very good.

Had the ribs with coleslaw and chips. Meat was so tender. Sensational! Fantastic value. Great atmosphere and friendly staff. Wine tasted pretty good too.

Went there on a deal for lunch. It was fantastic. I had dips and calamari which was beautiful and fresh. My partner had seafood pasta which she loved. A fantastic atmosphere. I'd go back

Didnt realize u had to g to the bar to order food. Kind of weird and an odd policy.
4 of us dined dips and arancini got entree spot on.

I had porterhouse on a chip tower very impressive and the pea sauce different but amazing.
Friends had salmon less impressed overdone and skin not really crispy
Red wine was pretty good and at $20
Def return

For food? Should you pay $19 for an average Parma and still be expected to fetch your own cutlery? I can go to Derby thai and have a meal that's half the price, twice as good, and twice as healthy. Oh and it comes 10x faster! Do yourself a favour and avoid this ugly relic.

Nice pub to go for drinks. Atmosphere is welcoming and staff is friendly. We were a group of 10 for lunch and were served quite fast. I had a steak with chips and salad and it was spot on. One of my friends ordered a burger and it looked really nice. I would definitely come back.

What a gem this place is. .Friendly service and great food.Locals special on Mon and Tues means great grub for reasonable fixed prices of $15.50 excluding 2 types of steak and the paella. Huge portions served for my calamari.Wish this was my local.

Really enjoyed it here, lovely spacious pub, friendly staff and the food was reasonably priced and decent sized serves. I had the gnocchi which was lovely, only complaint was it was full of mushrooms, if it was listed on the menu as with mushroom I would not have ordered it, but I picked them out and all was good. Would go there again.

I really liked the open plan setting at this pub, with the bar in the middle of it all. Nice dips etc for entree. Had the mixed grill for mains. Really enjoyed the hash brown and the baked tomato. The steak was a bit ordinary and the sausage too spicy for me - but my husband enjoyed it. Another guest commented that the salt and pepper squid was really good. Friendly happy staff.

Walking distance from home & our local to catch up with friends & kids...Great food- parmas are amazing ! Plenty to choose from !!! Daily local specials a bonus...

Menu change & so to has the quality of the food...had the main s & p calamari...didn't enjoy it at all. Ended up not eating it. Disappointing
Nick The Greek
Good value and huge servings. Daily specials to choose from , try the beef and pork meatballs for entree. If you are hungry attempt the Parma ...its huge!!! Good for a mid week meal.

Came in for a late lunch today and we practically had the whole place to ourselves as it's a weekday and well past normal lunch hour. We were greeted warmly by the host and chose to sit at the back of the dining area with two TVs. The vibe is very laid-back and relaxing, like most pubs. For food we decided to have the porterhouse steak with mushroom sauce and seafood marinara (it seems to be all I feel like eating lately!), as well as duck spring rolls as entrees. The food came reasonably fast and the duck spring rolls were heavenly... No wonder there were quite a few good reviews about them. They were so well-fried and very juicy inside, we just hoped they could include slightly more in one serving! Our mains were also pretty good and portions were generous. The napoli sauce in my spaghetti was delicious and the steak was well-grilled to our liking (we also liked that there were plenty of vegetables that came with the steak instead of fries like most places do, since we love our veggies). They also have daily specials throughout the week and very cheap happy hour drinks between 5-6pm Mon-Thur (5-7 on Fri) which certainly caught my attention. I would gladly return and try other dishes on the menu as well.

This pub does feel like you are travelling back 4 decades style-wise but I quite like that.
The food highlight was the duck springrolls ($13 for 2 large ones). The pork belly main ($24) which came with an apple coleslaw salad and croquette was just okay.
Crowd on a Friday night was some after work groups and families.
Hungry Panda
This local pub seems to have a big restaurant menu.We ordered a Peri Peri Chicken burger and an Albion Wagyu Burger along with some beer.

Both burgers were great!
Peri Peri full of flavour without being overly spicy, chicken breast cooked nicely and remained succulent and not dry at all. The Wagyu mince was flavourful and accompanied with great fillings.Nice chips too :)

The only downside is that the pub looks and feels quite outdated. Not really old enough to be vintage, but at least everything seems clean and maintained.

Upping the Ante on Pub Food.
Okay, we all have been to pubs and dreaded their extra large chicken parmigiana with cheese lava overflowing from the plate....well sadly NOT in this place.

Got to commend on the team here...upping the ante on pub food.

We nearly did order all on the Menu ... Most of the food is great, plenty of potential, a few presentation issues, etc. other than that, it is gold.

Staff was a little run down with the many people on Tuesday night.

Well done team for keeping the pub culture and it's heritage with a much better offering.

Looking forward to drive there from the Eastern suburb.

UPDATE
On recent visit JAN 2016
Sadly I have to downgrade my rating ....

I have eaten here twice in the last month and I must say that both the food and service have been outstanding. Meal sizes are very generous with the menu offering just enough variety.

Second visit to the Albion must have got a new chef. Differen menu and food is not as good as is was. They have got rid of the chili cheese fries which was the best thing on the menu.

Had the fat chook Parma at the Albion Hotel. The portion size was great. Unfortunately that was only thing I liked about the Parma. The chicken it self was tough to cut into and was a bit dry. Chips and salad with this was good but Parma a let down. Hope it was a once off.

I have had meals here in the past and have been OK to above average, anyway came in today for lunch, greeting was good , but it was odd that we couldn't sit at the table clothed tables, must be only for dinner. Ordered the lamb souvlaki and fat /thick chicken Parma. The serving size was good, but the other persons Parma was dry. The lamb souvlaki was a bit sad, shredded lamb and way too salty considering you have feta in the salad. Not the worst lamb souvlaki but wouldn't recommend it . If the lamb is getting old and dry just get fresh lamb guys- don't try to overdress or mask it. The chips were cooked well. So many better places in Port Melbourne for the prices on the menu here.

What a fantastic little pub hidden in Port Melbourne. My boyfriend and I used a scoopon voucher just recently on out first visit to The Albion Hotel, it was a fantastic deal with a choice of any entrée, a main meal each and a bottle of wine or jug of beer, all for $40. We asked if we could just get a drink each as we wouldn't have drank a whole jug or bottle and the manager was extremely friendly in saying we could have a pint of whatever drink we like.
The trio of dips for entree was a great deal - 12 pieces of warm, toasted pita bread with 3 different dips which were all very tasty.
We both had a parma and wow it was one of the best parmas we have had in a very long time and was a great size too.
As well as enjoying our meals we enjoyed the fantastic customer service that The Albion Hotel had to offer. We will definitely be back soon for another delicious pub meal!!

My partner and i found this gem a little while ago Matt Black is fantastic and the staff are lovely. They 100% do the best parma BUT i question their smaller parma being named the 'ladies parma' That hasn't sat well myself and the ladies i bring there. Anyway. The decor is half rustic and pub the other half is more restaurant styled. We will come back 100%

The Albion is one of the most memorable dining experiences I've had for some time. It's rugged exterior gives little away as to what awaits thee. The servings are HUGE, as is the quality of the fare coming of the pass, not to mention the impeccable service. Overall you'd do well to consider the Albion when next in Rome.

Was at the Hotel Albion Saturday night. We don't live in the area but my friend had a Scoopon voucher so we thought we would give it a try. Although all the food was fantastic, I've mainly given it a 5/5 for the steak (sirloin/ porterhouse), which was so good, the best I've had in ages - good quality meat and cooked exactly how I ordered it (and I'm really particular with steak). The rest of the food was of an equally high quality, we shared the saganaki entree which came with olives, feta, marinated capsicum and rocket, as well as pita, my friend had the lamb shanks (I'm not a huge fan of lamb in general, but she raved about it), and finally I ordered the chocolate mousse for dessert, which was really rich and so yummy. Will definitely be going back for that steak, and really look forward to trying some of their other dishes.

The Albion Hotel is alive and well.

I visited this Port Melbourne Pub first in January 2010. (See here) To find that some good things stay the same is very comforting. The decor is the same, the fires still burn and the people are still there.
Parma Daze
There is a moment in every man’s life where he will step up, grab life by the balls and say “Yes! I will eat a kilogram of chicken, as well as chips & salad in order to get my photo and name listed on the pubs website” and for five of the Parma Daze review team, that moment was last night.

Grandeoso Double Parma. I Took the challenge and nearly made it! It's the best parma going around! BEST IN VICTORIA!!

I asked if they had a room I could stay in and they all looked at me and laughed. Would not recommend if you guys are looking for a place to sleep.

Parmaaa. Can confirm the parma is amazing, did the challenge and didn't want it to end.

Best pub in Port Melbourne. Diners should check out the local Port Melbourne Botanical Gardens while they're at it.
DinnerCritic
Not your average pub an excellent dining experience, and I am fussy!. We went here for a change for dinner one week night. Had been here for a meal once before (parma) which I recall was good. On this occasion I was with my wife and elderly mother. We were greeted in a friendly manner and offered a table (nicely set with table cloth).

I glanced around and saw a variety of furniture for what would be different moods and occasions. My initial thought was that, like many pubs, when you get the table cloth tables you pay more. No, not the case! This I like a lot. You can choose your own dining mood and experience and all at the same price! Sometimes I feel just like a normal pub table but on other occasions it is nice to have it “dressed up”. On the other hand it was great to see the casual couches as well. Really, something for everyone and all very comfortable. A nice flickering fire on a cooler night as well added to the ambience.

I had difficulty choosing from the menu as it had good variety. In the end I went for the Chicken Mignon and my co-diners both went for the Fish of the Day which was salmon on a bed of rice with a sauce.

Well, when the food arrived it was anything but “pub food”.

My chicken breast was cooked perfectly and had clearly been brought straight to the table as you could see the clear juices in the breast which had been sliced down the middle just before serving. When I say cooked perfectly, it was just that! Not dry but moist with the soft chicken perfect inside yet with a slight brown crispness on the outside. It was on a bed of spinach whit a beautiful sauce, fairly heavy on the garlic, but nonetheless well balanced and flavoursome.

The ladies salmon was cooked perfectly and had a few prawns, well shelled and utterly perfectly cooked! I pinched one of my mother’s and I really do not remember when I have had such a perfectly soft, flavoursome and perfectly cooked prawn. Fantastic! The sauce on their dishes also was fairly well supplied with garlic but really was beautifully balanced with tomato and cream. I could not help picking at my mother’s dish as she was unable to eat it all and I just had to help myself! Excellent.

The main courses were under $30 and were excellent value for what was a restaurant dining experience; certainly not just a pub meal!

We had dessert, I the sticky date and my mother the chocolate mousse. I am not normally one for a mousse but it was presented nicely, rather than boringly in a flat bowl or glass, in a bowl as it probably had been scooped from a larger container. It was light, fluffy and flavoursome.

My sticky date (and I am a frequent sticky date eater) was also excellent and a generous proportion. It had visible, soft dates which had been stirred into it before cooking. I was so full (from eating everyone else’s food as well) that I could not eat the last morsel. It was excellent, but I had reached my limit!

We will most definitely be back!

Went on Parma night, great value for money, quick fresh and very yummy food. The staff were friendly and nice, drink prices on the higher side. Would defiently be back.

This is one of those nice local pubs which promise good comfort pub food. I went there on the parma night, my goodness the parma were huge, u could easily share it with someone if u really want some yet feel guilty about pigging out. The parmas come with a variety of sauces. I had the grilled smoked salmon with salad - really really nice (totally compensated for the sacrifice I made for choosing healthy over a fat chook parma with melted cheesssseeee).
The pub has a few 'sections' - one part is white table cloth setting like a proper restaurant, next to it are a casual dining area (no table cloth), then you have the couch area and even a few fire places which u could sit next to!! The fire places are not woodfire chimney, could be gas...can't quite remember.

As this is a local pub they close quite early. I remember calling them at 8.30pm on a Friday and they said kitchen was about to shut due to slow night.

Brilliant value. While the Parma specials and local nights are amazing value. Any night at this pub will deliver. Great food, fresh and plentiful. Friendly staff and nice vibe. Definitely recommend.

PARMI POWER!. Hi,

Went to the Albion last night for a friends birthday, and enjoyed a Spanish Parmi (which was a special with napoli sauce and chorizo). Absolutely smashing meal! Gorgeous, juicy, massive piece of chicken, and the topping was delicious and generous. A mountain of crispy chips and a nice little salad on the side. A fantastic meal for $19!

My friend took up the double parmi challenge (which was absolutely massive!) and smashed it in 17 minutes! AMAZING!!

Another friend had the pork belly and said it was just divine.

The service was fantastic, and my meal came out nice and hot within about 10 minutes.

Really impressed (as i usually am with this restaurant) and totally recommend :D

Will come back again. Went here on a wednesday night to tackle the double parma. Was a little disappointed the triple parma challenge had been cancelled (something about a large group trying it and ppl throwing up everywhere?).
I ordered the double parma plus chips and salad which arrived in a timely manner.
The parma was actually better than I expected. Can describe it a juicy chicken steak - it wasnt that processed crap you find at cheap eateries.
Managed to get through the whole thing and claimed a free bottle of wine for doing do.
Pricing was very reasonable but more importantly it was a decent parma.

Will definitely come back again.

Parma-a-rama. Quite simply the best Parma in Melbourne. Enough said.

Mmmmmm Parma night wow , really big plate of yummy food sometimes slow service , but hey it's a busy pub and food is awesome another port Melbourne treasure

Great Food. Me and my partner have been going here ever since we moved to port melbourne. Monday and Tuesday is locals night with a wide selection of top quality food at around $15 per meal. Great place to curl up around the fire on a winters night and enjoy some great service, food and a couple of drinks.
Christine
Value, Fresh and Good Service. Local night - Monday and Tuesday is really good value. We had an early dinner at 6pm and then caught the light rail (over the road from Northport light rail station) to Southbank (3 stops) and walked along Southbank on a balmy evening, to the Arts Centre/Theatre for 8pm. No parking problem, no hassle and no rush.

Great pub, unfortunate location.. Albion has a great menu - all the pub favourites plus a few delicious surprises.
Don't forget to book for the best parma night in Melbourne - Wednesday night.
Or for amazing value, try the steak on locals night when the whole menu is $14.
Pork belly is deliciously evil - only eat if you're ready for a blowout!
Unfortunately it's a fair way off Bay street, but despite this it definitely has the best pub food in Port!
Kim Hauser
You can't go past Monday & Tuesday nights when everything on the menu is $15.50! Portions are big & food is tasty.

The wine rack looks very cool! Like an old english dining room, very cosy, warm &Inviting. The Parma was huge & delicious, rivals the other local favorite at The Exchange

Had the spicy one, the other night, full of yummy taste, clean, large, fresh, awesome chips, a few beers. The service was fun, no fuss.

You just keep getting better, thanks.
