Review The Royston Hotel - Melbourne

Keegan McDermott
Great pub with top notch food, awesome drink selection and friendly staff. The chicken parma lived up to the hype, it was excellent. Tasty ham and chips on the side as they should be. Good steak and the cheeseburger spring rolls were a winner. Nice atmosphere inside, nice and cosy. Would be a great place for a winter session.

Was told is the best Parma in town!! They weren’t wrong! Thick enough chicken piece not to be dry and balanced really well with the salad side thingy bob!
Gene Echols
Bloody fantastic pub! great selection of craft beers, cask ale (!!!) and delicious food. Bar team is super helpful. The Royston is an absolute must visit
Koen Alexander
Good beer selection, good food, great outdoor seating (as well as indoor). Covid smart.

The Royston looks like a pub from the sixties, old, dimly lit and classic. This also is the charm of this place, it's a cosy vibe inside with awesome service from friendly, attentive staff who know their trade. You also have an old school restaurant out back and seating options put side too. The menu here covers all bases with some great twists here too! The cheeseburger spring rolls and a MUST try, the chicken parmigiana is rated one of the best in Melbourne and all flavours are smashing! Serves are decent and are not over priced. Good kids menu as well as a great beer list and wines that won't miss the spot either. The beauty of this place is you can go here to drink with friends and enjoy a great meal and get lost in the conversation as the vibe and ambience makes it so cosy and non distracting. If you're out for a flashy night out, this is not the place, but if you want a great pub, with amazing food, top service and to enjoy the company you're with, this place is 5 stars!

Hard to fault the food at all. Big fan of a their burgers including the tiny sliders that came out for the toddler in the group. The roast pork was outstanding. Great pub away from the main street, parking wasn't an issue at the time. Plenty of free spots around.
Paul Zimpfer
The food is better than 90% of restaurants out there, no word of a lie! Pubs are becoming the new one stop shop and this pub leads the way. Great beer (i would wish at least one normal Lager was on tap tho) nice atmosphere, reasonable price and incredible food. I had the Philly cheese steak and it was incredible. Will be back!!!

Had dinner with a group of friends. The entrees were excellent - we had the crispy eggplant, calamari and mo-mos. I had the kangaroo for main and it was cooked perfectly. Everyone enjoyed the meal and it was quite well priced, washed down with some beers and a couple of wines. I have had lunches here in the past and the burgers were good from memory. The only downside is that parking was difficult even mid week.

Tha is pub has some great craft beers. The service is excellent and the food is good.

They have a new menu. My Parma was alright, average really.as it was a but dry and no where as good as previous Parmas that I've had.

The craft beer selection on the whiteboard in the bar has been reduced atm but they still have a solid list of some great beers.

The pinot noir wine was delicious, and top quality.

The vegetarian cauliflower with a blue cheese sauce was fantastic, soo moorish. Unfortunately I've deleted my pics from my last visit.

The food we had in the dining area was just ok. Had beef cheeks with rice noodles. Not the freshest and flavours could have been better. Nice pub but wouldn’t rush to eat there again.
Birdman
Probably a 3.5 but nothing amazing. Old school locals pub and although a good amount of people not much atmosphere in the front bar, TVs, music? Good selection of beers but food is just OK. Sweet potato chips I never usually order but these came with a whipped goats cheese which was nice. Parma I thought was too thin and lacked a bit of flavour. Had some of the fried chicken burger which was OK. Not a bad joint but plenty better.

I don't know how to describe this Parma... At first I was like yeah, it's a pretty good parma... But it keeps getting better. It may just be me, but sometimes after a few bites a Parma gets boring, but this one got better with every bite. I'm full and I need more.

Bloody delicious. Quality pub food, reasonably priced and great beer. This is a rad pub & would highly recommend!! If you’re coming specifically for dinner, I’d book a table, this place is in demand.
Alex
One of the few pubs left in the area with a bit of charm. The food is tasty pub fare with some interesting quirks ( Hasselback potato yo). Plus the beer selection is flexible and intense . Probably the most beautiful pool room in Melbourne . She’s a keeper .
Angie
Standard food but solid local pub for the area. Great Wednesday night trivia but book ahead to reserve a table and get there early to order your food, otherwise it can be a 1 hour+ wait with everyone ordering at the same time.
Linda
I had my eye on the cheeseburger spring rolls a week before coming here - and they didn’t disappoint. The mince and cheese filling was tasty without being too fatty. Served with lettuce too so it cuts through being too heavy. Loved that it came with pickles. While I didn’t have it, the parmas looked amazing and serving size huge.

Been here on a friday evening. Ambience good .. crowd good.. music good ...food and staff can be better ...slightly overpriced... overall an average experience.
Foodiee
Picked up a quick dinner with mates and ordered pale ale and chicken parma. I have had better ones but this is pretty stock standard. The chicken was a little bit on the dry side.

My favourite pub in Richmond! As a local it has been the best steak night my boyfriend and I have ever had! Seriously mouth watering and to die for! We go back nearly every week.. the serving is generous, chips are crisp/ tasty, the steak is always beautifully done and the peppercorn sauce- don’t even get me started! The best I’ve ever tasted (sauce wise)! We also tried locals night and again it was great! I had the Parma which was a large serving and delicious! My partner had the eye fillet with the red wine sauce which again was top notch. Lovely staff and beautiful decor. The Royston has maintained the old architect of the building which I adore and it has a lovely cosy feel inside. Try and sit in the dining room for meals.

We love this place and is always our go to spot. The bar area has a great vibe and perfect for hanging out with friends over a few wines. There is also a separate dinning area which is nice but there is tables in the bar area to eat too. The food is always delicious and the Monday night locals menu is awesome value (everything on the menu for $18). The gnocchi, pork belly and steak are my favourite.

First I've been to a pub where staff we so friendly & welcoming. Best staff at front bar, very polite and greeting with big smiles. Food was awesome. Will definitely be back! Keep up the great work.
Patsy
Always great food and service at The Royston. Staff are friendly and approachable. Had lunch here on Mothers Day, a very busy day, but it did not alter the fabulous service or the quality of the food. Highly recommend.
Sophie
Love this place, we usually come here on Monday nights as it’s locals night so it’s $18 main meals, everything I’ve had has been delicious. The staff are very attentive and friendly. Looking forward to my next visit.
Melbourne Epicure
This pub has got some serious eats. We've been here a couple of times during odd hours of the afternoon and it has, so far, been pretty quiet save for a few (seemingly) locals. The staff are always nice and ready to advice on beers of which they have a good selection. And then the food. This is obviously why we come here... The first time around we had the scotch fillet with the Hasselback potatoes and cabbage salad with a nice vinagrete and (I think it must have been a special of the day) a super delicious kangaroo with figs, gorgonzola cheese and walnuts over a mash and with divine jous. Superb.

The steak was perfectly medium-rare with a delightful herb butter glaze over it. The potatoes were excellent and so pretty to lok at. And that cabbage salad was actually great to cut through those deliciously caramelised bits of prime rib fat and butter sauce. The Kangaroo was probably one of the best kangaroo dishes I've ever had. That jous went brilliantly with that perfect marriage between gorgonzola and figs and somehow none of it obscured the perfectly cooked roo!

Our next time around, we ordered the barramundi and then I was undecided between having a steak again (it was just so good that first time around) or the chicken parma until the guy mentioned that their parmas were among the top 5 rated in Melbourne... So you can guess what we went with... The parma really was no joke. This thing has tons of molten cheese oozing over a deliciously crispy parma. The cabbage slaw again was delicious and complimented the dish very well. The barramundi was delicate and beautifully cooked. I highly recommend this place."
Emma
The atmosphere is great and the fries with the feta cheese is really nice and tasty. I also recommend the burger and the chicken wings. Truly great
Kate Dougherty
Traditional style pub- perfect for a cold Melbourne winter night. Staff were really lovely and the food was great. As a starter we shared the cheeseburger spring rolls purely out of curiosity. They tasted exactly like a cheeseburger! So good! Then for main I went for the pork belly with pumpkin purée, cabbage, and bacon. Firstly, you can't go wrong with two types of pork. But secondly, the pork belly itself was delicious- not overly fatty and had super crispy crackling. Definitely give this dish a try!
🍀
The Royston is always a reliable place.
Good food.
Warm feel.
Always a welcome feel.
The staff are always friendly.
A real local venue.
A neighbourhood bar.
Good for food or a drink.
Espy Eats
Came to this cozy wee pub on a Saturday night for dinner and a couple of drinks. Seemed like a lot
Of locals here because the bar staff seemed to know them. They have a great range of boutique beers on tap and by the bottle. Dinner was tasty. I think the menu has changed since the last time I was in here but they still had the chicken parma. They have a good range of vegetarian friendly and pescatarian friendly dishes which makes it a good dining option for that difficult friend. It's pubs like these that make we miss my Richmond living days.
Josh Adams
My favourite pub ever. The best staff, the best venue and the best food. We will be coming back to Melbourne just to have another night out at the Royston.
Jimmy Carradine
Ok. So ended up at this great pub due to a recommendation of a college. This place is fantastic. Great atmosphere, service is outstanding and my parmie was the bet I've had for a long time. Was going to give it a 4.5/5, but then the red cabbage coleslaw was the icing on this cake.
Clare
The pub is one that, unless you're a local, you might not know about it. Doesn't look like much from the outside, and inside the interior is very 'pub like' and laid back. Their Parma was mentioned in Time Out magazine for a great Parma but I found it to be a bit disappointing given my expectations from it being in Time Out. Size-wise it was good. It was expensive for what it was though and had too much sauce and very little cheese.
Amos Rojter
Excellent beer list, and they do cheeseburger spring rolls.....I repeat....CHEESEBURGER SPRING ROLLS! Food is great here, and all the share plates are generous. One of Richmond's finest.
Mrs Mark
Solid 3.5. Friendly service but really lacked atmosphere. We had two steaks - the porterhouse and the scotch fillet which were both very good. We also ordered a side salad but they didn't tell us it was the same salad that came with the steak. That did make us feel deceived.
Nat
Came down for the steak night and was Delish! Steak was a little under than asked for, but we were fine with that. Nothing worse than over cooked steak. Food was great, and the portion size was more than needed. Staff were n Or and friendly. Definitely be going back and recommending.
Emma Shaw
Tasty pub food. The menu changes reasonably regularly and they always have a few quirky dishes on offer that keeps things interesting. The service in the dining room can be pretty ordinary and they often seem short-staffed but it is certainly not a place you go expecting fine dining service. The food is good and reasonably priced.
BL
Went for steak night, advanced booking is required as the dining area is quite small but has a very cosy feel. The waitresses were lovely and the steaks were spectacular! We ordered 8 steaks and a pasta. All 8 steaks came at the same time and we ordered steaks ranging from medium rare to medium well, all were cooked to perfection!
The cheeseburger spring rolls really tasted like a cheeseburger. It was tasty yet somewhat funky. It confused my brain but my taste buds loved it. The calamari was delicious too. Crispy batter, lightly salted and tender calamari could be found with every bite. We ordered the apple rhubarb crumble and the sticky date pudding. Both were delicious, however the sticky date pudding got more votes.
My daughter swapped her chips for sweet potato chips and as much as I don't like sweet potato chips, these were crispy, well seasoned, cooked through and really tasty. I had 2 and that says a lot, coming from someone who won't eat even 1.
Verdict: Steak night is a must! Book in advance.
Gwyd'oh Barbaglia
One of my favourite places in Richmond, a must on Friday nights for a super classical Parma and beers. Don't miss the specials and the great selection of beers.
Chris Dane
Great food friendly service
You guys need to try this semi- gastro pub
Ok yes it's a little out of the way but there is a fine combination of quality food gentle ambience
Food is as the waiter said "pub food" generous but with a touch of quality and care that is hard to find and sticks in the memory
Well done
Nicole Power
Great pub with an awesome selection of beers on tap. They were very accommodating for our group that had babies and prams and the service was really good. The food wasn't as good as last time I was there about a year ago but it was still a lot better than your typical pub food. They don't do coffees/hot drinks which is a shame but everything else was excellent.
Miriam Faine
Our local - aren't we lucky. Cosy dining room, good food - sometimes really good, sometimes pub good, - brilliant desserts. Not super cheap but good value

Chris Turner
I've been coming here for over ten years and never had a bad meal. And lately the food's stepped up even a few more notches. The menu's smaller than it was, but everything we've had from it has been fantastic. The pork belly is particularly good and probably about the best we've ever had in terms of the quality of the meat, how it's cooked (the crackling's p-e-r-f-e-c-t!) and what it's served with, which includes a delicious walnutty salad. The only criticism I could make is that the serving size of the pan-fried gnocchi (also delicious and excellent quality) could be a few gnocchi bigger.
Schnerf
Disappointing. I used to go here regularly as they had one of the best parmas in Melbourne, however I'm not sure if they employed a new chef in the last few months; the quality since Christmas/New Year has deteriorated significantly. The Napoli sauce and the chips have both changed for the worse, to the point where we don't bother going anymore.
Please change back!
Jelena Louise May
I ordered the pan-fried gnocchi with roast pumpkin, sage, burnt butter and hazelnuts. I was at first hesitant to get it as I've always had bad luck when ordering gnocchi. It's either too dry or not cooked well. But this dish was beautiful! Absolutely delicious and great flavors too. My glass of red was a perfect match for the dish as well and they both paired well together. Thank you Royston for cooking fantastic gnocchi!
Convivialsins
Came here for the Thu steak night special... IMHO... for $16 for 250g rump? was ok. But what was pretty good however were the available selection of sides. We had the cheeseburger Springrolls! The salt spicy calamari. The cheese baked potatoe thingy (this was the best!) parking is difficult / limited so beware.
කෑම ලෑස්තියි (Food Is Ready)
A popular pub in Richmond, essential to make a reservation. I enjoyed the pork belly in mashed sweet potato, which blended well with a red wine.
Hilary Coward
This place was found by my friend on Melbourne's best parma page. The general consensus on my table was that the parmas were definitely enjoyable but not mind blowing. Large portions and crispy chips, very nice with a cold beer or cider.
Info
The Royston is a traditional pub and is located in a fairly quiet area of River St in Richmond, when you enter your first impression is of a locals pub, with the handwritten footy tipping scores on the wall, pool table and separate dining area.

The Royston has some great specials on throughout the week such as $17 porterhouse steaks and parma’s. On this visit, we had an entrée size salt ‘n’ pepper calamari, fries with ketchup and a 250g porterhouse steak with hand-cut chips, slaw and red wine sauce.

The Royston Hotel describes itself as a quintessential local pub. It's kind of hard to find because it is halfway down a dead-end street between the Yarra River and the industrial heart of Richmond, one of Melbourne's oldest working class suburbs. If going away from the city on Bridge Road, take a left down River Street and you'll find it. Despite it being somewhat hidden, it is a fairly popular spot.
EmYap
Really enjoyed the Parma here, the chicken was cooked really well and was a very generous serve! Liked that the crumb was still a little bit crunchy too. Accompanying slaw is nice and fresh and chips are well seasoned.

I love the Royston because it is close to my apartment and they have a pool table and a really nice dining area and lots of tap beers and they let me order vegies instead of fries with my burger, although they usually forget and i get chips anyway. Its the thought that counts. Also trivia night is great, and the guy who presents it is very funny and witty. Although i cant help think some of it is 'scripted' in a sense, as in he used that joke another night at another venue, got a positive reaction, and thought 'that one will slay at the royston'. Also the same team always wins. But i feel happy for them. The Royston is a sensational place to hang out, and the staff are lovely, especially the blonde girl whos been working there for ages. A+
Ashley
A great pub for a drink, and I've eaten here before and it's been good stock pub food. Something has changed. Our meals tonight were poor. Terrible chewy meat. When your steak appears to be medium rare and it takes 5mins to chew it something is off. Woeful chips. So disappointed.
Parmasofmelbourne
Judging from our readers suggestions, The Royston is quite a popular go to place for a parma so we thought we would go check it out. Something about this place makes you feel like your in a 80’s american tv show. I think it was the bright neon lights and signage. This hotel is decked out phenomenal. The bar was absolutely boasting with people grabbing a feed or just having a couple drinks with friends. It just had a really friendly feel to it which we love.
15 mins and the parmas were out.
The bird overall was quite big and thick. Real unprocessed chicken.
The talk about point of this bird was the crumbing. The chicken was ‘pre-crumbed’ which gives the crumbing a stale and soggy texture which let the parma down as a whole. It takes away from the whole ‘freshness’ flavour of the schnitzel. This always makes us bit grumpy as it potentially can break a parma.
The napoli was hands down our favourite part of the dish and is what saved the parma. It was home made, chunky and tasty as anything.
The ham was your average ham. We have had tastier but it played its part okay.
The cheese used was mozzarella. It was a tad oily but we must say it was nice and fresh.
The chips were standard pub chips. Were quite soggy when we finally rescued them from under the parma but they were cooked and seasoned well. There just wasn’t a whole lot there. For $22.90 there should of been another handful on the plate.
The salad was the roystons signature slaw. Was fresh and dressed well. A nice addition to the dish.
I would be lying if we didn’t say we were a tiny bit disappointed with the parma here. With that being said, the parma wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t anything out of the ordinary either. The royston uses solid fresh ingredients but the parma was let down by lacklustre crumbing. If the royston made changes to crumbing, there parma would definitely be up there. We definitely want to come back here for a drink or 7, but would we come back for the parma? For $22.90 probably not. They have a parma night on tuesday for $17 which is worth a gander. If your not a parma lover, we urge to go down for a drink and check out the unique hotel The Royston is.
6.5/10
CBF Glutton
Food was okay, portions were average, the price is a bit expensive.
Decent selection of good beer.Very good ambience and the decor is decent.
Service is good.

Not a bad place, would love to come back again.
Flyingpotato
Great beer, ordinary food!. The tap beer options were great, but the food was really ordinary!!

Fried chicken and the cold meat platter for entree were both fine.

Had the Scotch fillet and asked for medium rare, it came out medium-well and tough.

The Stickydate pudding was nice, but the sauce it came with was terrible! Whoever made it added way too much alcohol, it didn't taste like butterscotch at all.

There are too many good gastropubs in Melbourne to waste money going to this one!
The Parmassieur
I had to resort to using the flash as it was just too dark to make it out normally. Unfortunately the flash does make it look a lot less appetizing than it actually was,
Hold The Peas
All the desserts were fabulous, no complaints about any of them.
The Hungry Excavator
The scallops and steak were a little underwhelming (almost struggled to finish it) but hot dang were the thrice cooked chips there amazing or what! We couldn't get enough of them. Seriously crunchy with a nice, soft and almost mushy centre. Just the way I like it even though most people would argue that potatoes need to be "fluffy" in the middle. Whatever. I truly enjoyed the chips there that evening. Plus, their aioli was super garlicky, which was nice too.
Parma Daze
The meal at the Royston is amazing, no two ways about it. Despite some issues with the sides the parma itself is a touch shy of parma perfection. Had they still used the chips from the 2013 version of their parma I reckon they’d be in serious contention for the top of the ladder. Even without them this is still an amazing meal, an amazing pub and definitely worth your time to check out.
Eddie
A terrific "gastro pub" with reasonably priced food and a lively trivia night on a Wednesday night
Gastrology
Apart from excellent beer, the Royston provides very good quality food at reasonable prices.
Xjuzjuzjuzx
The starter was a small bowl full of veal meatballs in a green pepper sauce. The balls were firm, not juicy at all, and very peppery. Not spicy, peppery. In fact, those balls could have been made out of anything, and still would have tasted peppery. The gravy sauce they came in was peppery also, but we saved the bowl once the balls were gone so we could dip our chips in the gravy.
Libby Margo
What caught my eye was the fact that the beef pattie was massive. And shaped like a cricket ball. It was soft and fatty and deliciously tasty.
Food Lover
Sunday, Monday and Tuesday nights are locals nights at the Royston . And it's 15 at 15 - 15 meals for just $15. Parma , steak, salads, burger, fish & chips, pasta.
Andrew Turner
On a quiet backstreet corner at the Burnley end of Richmond, the Royston Hotel is fairly discreet in its presence. Through the door we headed right, where we'd reserved a table wood paneled dining room which had an almost French Bistro vibe.
Gem
The Royston Hotel is located in Richmond and is a mere hop, skip and a jump from the Mountain Goat Brewery, many of whose brews we’ve discussed on the blog aplenty, and imbibed even more.
Alex
Parma Heaven. Warm and cosy pub with one of the best Parmas I've ever had.
There was so many craft beer taps on offer, luckily one of the friendly staff helped me decide what to drink!
Thanks guys, I'll be seeing you again soon!
Stinga24
What's happened?. We have been here a couple of times as its our local. Although not a cheap pub the food has always been lovely. On our last visit our meals were so disappointing. The slow cooked lamb shoulder was terrible and something I would not have even fed to a dog. The other shared dishes that we ordered were extremely poor quality and simply just crap! With so many awesome options around i really do hope they improve!!
Jgoode
Disappointed. 2 eye fillet steaks that tasted 'not right'. No dressing on the mixed lettuce and average chunky style chips. Sorry, but neither of us could eat that steak. Staff agreed and refunded our money. What a shame it's gone downhill.
Littleadventuresmelb
So disappointed.. We have been coming here for a number of years for a 'nicer' Parma. After having a bad experience 2 months ago with the Parma changing ie. Processed, crap chips and just salad leaves we decided to give it another chance tonight. Not sure why we bothered arrived early minimal people and the Parma was just as disappointing. For $21 go up to the Bridge Hotel to get nicer chicken hand cut chips and salad with more than 1 ingredient. What's happened Royston?
ChefDaParty
Friends had warned us that the meals were bland and they were right. The steak was tasteless and had clearly not been seasoned at all. Odd that this is the sister pub of the consistently brilliant Terminus on Queens Parade. That said, the staff and bar itself are lovely. The food looked great so I'm hopeful that with a few tweaks we can return to something that also tastes good next time.
Phillip Hitchcock
Great tap line up Good foo.... Great tap line up
Good food and knowledgable staff
Highly recommended
J
Typical pub fare set in the traditional pub setting minus all the trendy hipster decorations. It's a super dark and small pub but caters well to small parties and gatherings. We had the pork belly which was lovely and not too salty but comes accompanied with a whole bunch of random bits of Unnecessary vegetables and potatoes. The lamb ribs were yumtastic. Service was great and the organised a birthday cake cutting too.
Flynn
A fantastic place for beer, food quality has dropped in the last 12 months , I ordered a Blue eye filit and it came our rare, i know a lot of people may not care but the chefs sould atleast be able to tell the difference for $33. A good pub im hoping was having an off night
Pyranhadoc
GREAT SELECTION OF CRAFT BREWS!!!!
Unexpectedly wonderful atmosphere!
Sorry quick trip for a fast beer can't comment on the food.
Cheers
Andrew Brown
Great selection of craft beers and the food is awesome ..
Tim
My favourite local. This is by far the favourite of my many locals'. If you love dingy quiet pubs with great selections of beer, good food and no obnoxious idiots and loud annoying music, this is your go to!

Awesome.
Coffee Patrol
Again and again. Changing specials always comes up with great options beyond their regular menu. Our party of out of towners, international travellers and pub of the month leaders enjoyed the superb lamb shanks pie the fish and chips and the grilled snapper all without fault. Washed down with their huge range of local and foreign craft ales. Deserts shouldn't be forgotten if you have room a very good sticky date pudding and dark chocolate broille. A Richmond gem.
Tommy Rodger
Great steak. Cool vibe, great beers and a cracking steak.

It's worth giving a heads up is that the Steak Night $17 offer is only available in the front bar - arrive early or you'll struggle to get a table.
Redbw
Service is great. Highly recommend this place
Gabn
Am a local & desperately looking for a reliable dining experience not OTT. Last week had a fantastic homely dining experience - last night the we couldn't get a decent steak. Both steaks went back to the kitchen, mine still came back cold & very blue.... sad but true
Victorian Dinner Critics
Great lunch the calamari salad was very tasty and plentiful, good service.
LoveDiningOut
The Royston Hotel ..a little gem!. What a quirky warm and cool little Hotel. The dining room is dim lit and quiet and offers an intimate dining experience with a great menu selection. I had the wild mushroom / barley risotto and it was nice, although a bit too much for me. My guests had the calamari and said it was the BEST she had ever had! I agreed when I had a bite! I shared the apple crumble, which was absolutely lovely and our guests also had the sticky date pudding which not only tasted great but the effort in the presentation was appreciated. The staff were attentive and friendly and the front bar wasn't overly big, which made it warm and inviting .. like your own little local. We finished the night in the front bar and sat in some well positioned comfy lounge chairs near the cool feature wall. For those who don't mind a game of pool .. there's also a table there as well. What a great little find! We were there on a Monday night, so I expect it gets more packed out later in the week.
Kristin
Good food, good service. Triple cooked chips with aioli were great, so were the waygu beef sliders. Mushroom & barley risotto, just okay. Entree scallops were delicious.
Gin
Noisy in the front bar on a Friday night but good food and great atmosphere. More than just a local.
Akel
Ordered the eye fillet which was the cost of an eye fillet at a top steak house - or Otto in Sydney. The steak was chewy, sinewy and undercooked. My partners steak was blue - despite ordering medium rare. When we pointed this out to the waitress - she deducted 10 dollars from our bill. Insulting and terrible food.
Eatenrun
I really want to like this place but the food and service we experienced were well below par.

Our meals were bland and in the case of the Chevapchichi Sausages for entree, too cold to have been served. The Porterhouse Steak while being tender, again lacked any great flavour.
On the other hand, the Sticky Date Pudding was a winner.

As mentioned above, I really want to like this cozy little place. So I'm going to reserve my judgement until I visit again.
Maybe I'll just go with the Parma....
Scotty Maple
Great pub. I have been meaning to write a quick review of this tremendous little pub. I have stopped in here with friends to try the broad range of beers they have on tap. The reason for this review is to ensure that their meals receive some recognition.

Well priced, tasty and a generous serving. Great service (fast and professional)

Keep it up guys
Hotdogsandfries32
Great neighborhood pub. Me and my mates love this place- great beer, always a great atmosphere and its not filled with typical snobby Richmond types, a favourite of ours for sure
Rachael
Come here for a hipster, candle lit dinner.. Fish and chips were epic, burger okay.. But wow chips here are so good!
Nika
The goat curry was amazing.
Stefan Michael
Nice atmosphere, good food. A regular venue for our group catch ups or a good place for a quiet dinner. The dinning room is cosy so you should book in advance, especially on a Friday/Sat night. The food is great and mostly consistent though we had one night where all of our food was pretty average, we returned to give it another chance and seemed to be back to its previous standard. There is a good range of beers on tap/wines also so you can kick on in the front bar if you wish.

90% is generous, 4/5 personally.
Iheartbaklava
For the price of mains, the portions were on the small side but they were delicious. The desserts were amazing too. They've always been consistent and I've never been let down. Still loving this place! The service is average and a little hit and miss though.
Elise Lawler
Have been here twice now, and I love it!! The food is fantastic. I hate pubs where they charge restaurant prices but the food doesn't deliver....well the Royston sure does deliver. And If u go, save room for sweets!!!
Jayj95
Small but boy its good. The size of the Royston pub in RIchmond may be small but the quality of food is phenomenal. The triple cooked chips are beautiful and the steak I had was moist and cooked medium. Also has a pool table which is good to play on too.
Ajs21
Great Pub. What a great find.
Top beer, food and friendly, knowledgeable staff.
3 visits in my 5 day stay in Melbourne. Its now on my list of to go to places during my visits.

Good pob. Good pub food pretty good nice place for a drink

Best triple-cut hot chips ever! Calamari was fabulous too, will DEFINATLEY go back to try rest of the menu.

Highly recommended!. Does 'gastro-pub' really well. Triple cooked chips with aioli are the best I have ever had and have been impressed with all the other menu items I have tried. Wagyu burger typifies 'dude food,' Love it. Service is also friendly and helpful,

In a nutshell- fantastic food, good value and attentive staff-big thumbs up!!

Group of 12 of us dined here last (Sat) night. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals (all generous servings) and the several who ordered steak said the meat was cooked spot on to their liking. I personally ordered the parma (nearly always do hehe. $21.90 on the parma price scale) and it was really good- quality chicken and ideal amount of topping (tip: it doesn't need salt added like I did- the cheese is fairly strong in flavour). Their hot chips are amazing - they triple cook them resulting in a delectably crunchy chip. The staff regularly came over to see if we were right for drinks and were not tardy in taking meal and dessert orders. I didn't order dessert myself but all options (creme brulee, sticky date pudding, honeycomb semifreddo or the like) were presented beautifully and supposedly super delicious.
They also have an impressive range of beers on tap.
I wouldn't normally bother rating a pub but this place is above average IMO.

BTW we found plenty of free parking spots along River St but they were 2hr limit until 11am. This meant several of hour party had to go move their cars during the night but we were informed by others that parking in North St had no restrictions.

Misleading. Went along on a Thursday night on the promise of cheap steak (Being that it was steak night) Apparently the cheap steak is only available in the bar area (we were sitting in the restaurant area), so we had to pay full price for exactly the same steak, cooked in the same kitchen that was being served meters away at a cut price.

For the small additional cost at the expense of a cheap trick, there leaves little reason to return.

Loved it!. Last night our party of four dined at the Royston and overwhelmingly agreed that we would be back!
From booking the table through to the dessert - we had a great gastro-pub experience!

The staff kindly accommodated my request made by phone for a 'quieter' table - a good start.
The menu and beverage list was extensive and caters for all. There was a 'Specials' menu as well. The wine, beer, and cider list is excellent with a focus on boutique beers some lovely (and not too pricey) Australian wines.

Our table shared two entrees to start - the salmon fishcake and the pork 'sliders'. The fishcake was huge and filled with generous flakes of smoked salmon and topped with dressed rocket. The men at the table were 'mmm'ing' as they devoured their pork sliders which suggested they were very good.

Our mains consisted of eye fillet served with tripled cooked chips and salad, a goat curry, and two seafood pots. We ordered a side of triple cooked chips with garlic aioli for the table to share.

I tried a piece of my husband's eye fillet which he was reluctant to give away as it was so good. Cooked to perfection and very generous in size. Dad's goat curry was delicious. Lovely rich flavours, served with perfectly cooked rice and a generous piece of roti bread. My seafood pot was superb! Really lovely, plump pieces of calamari, prawns and scallops in a slightly spicy casserole type sauce and mixed with black rice. It was only just too large for one person. I reluctantly left a couple of pieces of calamari and rice behind to save room for dessert. Come to think of it, the few delicious triple cooked chips I had probably displaced my appetite for finishing my seafood pot, but they were so good - a fat chip of very plump soft potato under a crispy triple cooked exterior - I had to have more than one!

Though we were all quite full after the generous mains, we just had to try dessert. It didn't disappoint. We shared two desserts between four - the white chocolate and passionfruit brûlée and the bread and butter terrine. Our dessert spoons tousled over the spoils on each plate despite the fact we were all groaning that we were full. Delicious.

The service was prompt, friendly and unobtrusive.

Overall, a really enjoyable experience. Dad is no easy man to please (a former hospitality man himself) and so when he's had a great night not only do we breath a sigh of relief, we also know the experience must have been really good!

Average Recommend by a friend but won't return. Moroccan lamb shanks didn't taste anything Moroccan about them and Wagyu burger was as dry as something you'd get a McD.

Good local pub but whats with the no cards on frodays anymore? Thats s let down and will peobably become more of a hassle than its worth... Sure theres an ATM that charges 2.50 per transaction but who's better off here!?

I'm really shocked by the last two reviewers' comments. I went last Friday to the Royston in a group of 7. We had a great time and were really impressed with our waitresses. They were spot on with their timing of drink refills and knowledge of their products, and they happily accommodated a change in our order. We were really happy with the quality of the food and next time I'll make sure to leave room for the desserts- they sounded amazing.

Our waitress was completely incompetant - we received Appallingly bad service with lower than average food. Two of our party of 7 had their meal arrive an hour after everyone else. With the newly opened Bridge Hotel so close they'll really need to lift their game. Don't waste your time coming to eat here.
