Review The Rice Cooker - Melbourne

Saravanand Naiker
I’m impressed. As a Malaysian I think the food we ordered is pretty spot on. Reasonably priced, good service and a well thought of menu to cater for everyone. I ordered the char koey teow with extra wok hei. Loved it! All was missing is the cockles. Hor fun was good. Egg gravy was just like back home. Would be back to try the rest of their menu as well. Overall 8/10.

Really nice place for lunch or dinner. We ordered Hainese chicken and Har mee (prawn noodles). We came just before 12pm which was great because this place can get pretty busy during lunch time. The food was pretty good and the service was fantastic, really nice people. The menu has quite a lot of things on it but the two things we tried were worth it.

This is the kind of place that doesn't stand out, but makes good food. Simple but reliable, consistent and affordable, with extensive options in the menu.

Nice, affordable restaurant with generous portions and helpful staff! The menu is very extensive but everything I’ve tried so far has been good, though their lemongrass chicken and popcorn chicken are my favorites. Food is consistently good, even during busy 12pm lunch rushes.

Love The Rice Cooker! It's my favourite restaurant to go to when I'm in the area. Used to work nearby and no longer do - really miss the food. Every dish I've had has been excellent. Great for a quick lunch or a group outing. Highly recommend!

We just left this great restaurant. The flavour of the RC 3R chicken still tingling my mouth. I'm not from Melbourne, but I know delicious when delicious is. Great value for money and impeccable service.

Tried a few of their dishes and it's really good! Excellent service and friendly staff, will definitely visit them more often!

Had an amazing dinner here with my girlfriend. Absolutely phenomenal food and service, left feeling very full and very satisfied. 10/10 would recommend.

I love the service and the food taste amazing!!! The sushi there is so nice and fresh. :)

Bought this for lunch. Looks amazing but there is literally 0 taste... so disappointed as I remember that it used to be pretty yummy

I normally get take away and it’s fast, fresh, hot and delicious. Reasonably priced considering the quality. Good variety. Every dish I’ve tried has been great and I’ve been eating food from here since they opened. The one time I dined in was solo and the service was perfectly fine.

The place is so fancy but affordable. My favourite is sushi and laksa. The sushi always freshly made and the laksa is very tasty. They also have many choices for another Asian food. I'll definitely come back to try another food.

I've tried a few dishes from here and have not been disappointed. The food is affordable and comes in huge portions! I love the Hainanese Chicken Rice and the Nasi Lemak!

I ordered the Hainanese chicken rice for many time. I love this dish so much and they cooked it very well. The chicken was soft and juicy. The sauce is perfect, not so salty and not so sweet, it is well balanced. The chicken and rice is such a good combo and I felt rewarding whenever eating this dish especially in here. I have ordered the fried chicken rice but it is not as tasty and special as Hainanese chicken.

Ordered Char Kwe Tiao. SO VERY NICE
The smokey flavour is strong and the taste is even nicer. My husband had the seafood laksa and the soup is creamy and full of flavour. Will come back next time for sushi because they also have sushi in the menu.

The lunch rush was well and truly underway when we arrived, but we were seated promptly and our order taken not long after. The hot food was cooked to order and damn tasty! Popcorn chicken was crunchy and flavoursome, the wonton soup was satisfying with a generous amount of wontons and the beef chow fun was smokey with good quality beef. Will definitely return!

Convenient location to the Parkville precinct of hospitals and Melbourne University, and an easy option for a quick and delicious meal. The service is quick and the food does not take too long to come out (especially considering how busy the place often is!). We did not have to wait for a table, but the place fills up quite quickly.

The char kway teow was really delicious - came out piping hot and full of flavour. Would definitely recommend!

Been here a few times and fine with the food. But today when we came at a peak time of lunch. After waiting for 40 minutes, I got the wrong food and the waitress promised me to have a new one "right away, in 5 mins". I was okay and after 20 more mins, we can't wait no more. The manager came and said we need to wait 20 more mins to have a new one, otherwise "go inside and cook yourself" and then "just go, I don't charge you". We were bewildered at such attitude to the customer. Waited for such a long time, got no food and mistreated like this is the first time in my life. They were wrong in the first place for getting wrong order and spoke to us like they don't effing need customers. So disgusting.

Never again.

Have been here several times over the last few months, wish we found it early. Every meal has been delicious, filling and very affordable. Miss it when we have to return home

This is our favourite restaurant in Melbourne. The food is always fresh and delicious. My girlfriend’s favourite is special fried rice. We have ordered that many times and we think it is the best fried rice in Melbourne. Sushi is extremely fresh. Loved it. Panna cotta desert is light and right amount of sweetness. The waitress is very nice. She remembered what we usually order. 😊
I absolutely adore their food and I have many favourites. Top on my list is their authentic Curry Laksa with high-quality stock, perfectly balanced with crunchy soft crab. It makes my mouth water just thinking about it now. Followed by their famous Hainanese Chicken Rice and my family also love their Lohbak, Popcorn Chicken and Wonton noodle soup. Excellent presentation of their sushi - each piece was perfectly uniform, attention to detail is on point. Great location and modern decor with very friendly staff and prompt service. Highly recommended and we will definitely go back for more delicious food.

Went there for a quick meal. Service was ok, but the food was overrated. I had a hainanese chicken rice, the rice was hard like a stone, chicken was tasteless.... ordered a beetroot ginger juice, which was not a fresh juice.

Went here when visiting Melbourne from Sydney. Nice place , Nice food , Nice owner. The food has authentic taste and kids also enjoyed the meal . Highly recommended for Malaysian food lover and family too

After a big late lunch, we preferred having a lighter dinner. We had a Char Kway Teow (Malaysian flat rice noodles), a soft-shell crab curry laksa (noodle soup) & a Lohbak (5 pieces of mince pork & prawn wrapped in bean curd skin served with sweer & spicy sauce). Char Kway Teow was nicely cooked. (It's a simple dish testing the ability of a good dedicated chef.) The soft-shell crab was a bit soggy in the laksa, even though we took it quickly. (It's not a successful dish.) The Lohbak was great with crispy skin.
(Food - 4.5/5; Service - 3.5/5; Ambience - 4/5)Visited 23 September 2018

The staff are friendly. We frequently order food from here working at RMH. The veggie new firebug has only 3 tiny pieces of tofu in it, the satay sauce had a hug layer of oil on top, the stir fry veggies were not very tasty. Good portion sizes though.

The Curry chicken roti wrap was great, however the Gogi wings (deep fried chicken wings with Korean chili sauce) and lemons grass chicken with rice are just plain as, def need much more seasoning and ask the chef to taste their food please. I know these flavors and they are just not there somehow.

Conveniently located just across the road from the new Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, providing a well needed alternative to the salads, pastas, wraps and sandwiched served in the many cafes within the hospital.

The Rice Cooker - your option of Malaysian/Asian cuisine (with at least 5-6 pages on the menu to pick from!) Also has sushi on display on the counter, haven't tried this yet.
Always busy at lunch, but we've always managed to get a spot.

The Rice Cooker Chilli Chicken Rice (R3CR) - spicy chilli chicken served on rice. And no joke with the spicy! Definitely a must try if you enjoy spicy food.
Hainanese Chicken Rice was good - generous serve of chicken, well made chicken rice, came with complementary chicken soup as it should!

I could smell the rendang and curry from the table next to us, that's what I'm having next!

Hainanese Chicken Rice was tasty. Staffs are friendly and the prices are reasonable, too. Would probably visit again! Btw, the salted fish chicken fried rice was really salty so don't tried it if you're not ready for it.

Just around the corner from work so a great choice for lunch when I'm after some rice paper rolls or an Asian dish. The Nasi Goreng is delicious, and also has a bit of a kick to it. The gyoza are also a nice option to accompany a main or to pick up as an add-on if I need something extra for lunch.
You Had Me At Haloumi
A little overpriced for standard china bar type food though perhaps you’re paying for better service and nicer atmosphere.
Very busy during lunch time. Try to go after 2pm when it starts to die down if you can wait that long. I’ve enjoyed my meals here though upon eating a piece of fillet fish I bit into an area full of fish bones. This made for an unpleasant dining experience if not a dangerous one. I would go back to try more dishes though.

Edit: After eating here a few more times now I feel that some of their dishes lack in flavour, never quite satisfying my finely tuned tastebuds for hawker asian food. This is unfortunate as it is a little dear.

Great tasty food. The Dumplings were fantastic. The service is superb, meals came out very fast. Very polite people who work there, will go back again.

Have been here multiple times for lunch and it has good pan Asian food. Everything I've ordered has been solid. Roti chanai and sushi is not bad, popcorn chicken and sambal prawn is quite nice, nasi lemak is good, Hainanese chicken rice is ok. Can be busy on a weekday lunchtime but the turnaround is reasonable and the staff attentive. On the pricier side perhaps for a casual Asian restaurant.
Laura
I go here at least once a week! Lovely, fast service and the best food! So many great options, catering to every taste - I've never not left here in a better mood :P
Gursharan Chana
A new malaysian restaurant, which judging by the reviews is a bit underrated. The food is nicely prepared and portions are generous, offering value for money. A nice vibrant open kitchen atmosphere.
Affogato Addiction
Extensive menu of self proclaimed Pan Asian items. Prices. Can be quick, but then they can also forget your meal.

Vegetable laksa, ok but not a particularly strong flavour.

Dry noodles with dumpling soup on the side, $13.80. Dumplings were good, soup was a nice not over salted. Toppings for noodles were terrible - the 3 small pieces of char siu pork were awful, flavourless, and bok choy was limp and underwhelming. Was I full - yes, was I satisfied - not really.

A great little Malaysian Style restaurant right near the Royal Melbourne Hospital. A really good, quick and cheap eat for a lunch break. The serving sizes are very generous and the food is very tasty.
Both my friend and I opted for the nasi lemak with beef rendang. I was very pleased with the dish but it was massive for a lunch.
Would gladly return the next time I visit my friend for lunch.

Stopped in for a quick meal before a function and ordered the crispy chicken with the chicken soup. Excellent quick meal; tender chicken with crispy skin and nicely season, perfectly cooked rice, tasty soup. Great value, would visit again.

The Rice Cooker is a great place to get affordable Asian food. My favorite dish by far is their ginseng salmon sushi. The fish is fresh and they also put just the right amount of rice. Sometimes I find myself craving it while I am in my classes. Anyways if you're looking for a place with delicious sushi, noodles, soup, or whatever. Stop by this restaurant. You won't be disappointed. Their staff is also really nice and have always greeted me and other customers when we come into their restaurant and thank us for our business

Great quality food. I recommend nasi goreng, mee goreng, beef randang, jasmine tea (all at once XD). Service is very friendly. Right in the peak of lunch time (weekdays) food can be slow to come out, but you can see how busy they are. Outside that high peak period the food is quick.

Authentic malaysian cuisine extraordinary food, lovely and friendly staff. Beautiful environment. a very cosy restaurant to go to everyday. Great to visit

Beautiful food, great service, wonderful staff my favourite was the hainanese
chicken rice. The environment makes me feel like I am in the street of Singapore
We found out about this place not too long ago. It’s so close to where we work we thought we would give it a shot and we must like it since we’ve been back a few times since!. So far I’ve tried the Combination Hor Fun and the Dry Won ton noodles. The combination hor fun came out looking a bit odd… it just looked very plain and not much colour to it at all. However when I tried it, it actually tasted exactly what a combination hor fun should taste like!

Cosy and handy restaurants on the Flemington road. Opening till late evening. Their Menu cover various choice among noodles, fried rice and sushi. Will visit again .

Tasty authentic Malaysian & Indonesian food at this place. The Gado Gado was really tasty, with the satay sauce served separately so you can put in as little or as much sauce as you like. This place also sell sushi so it's great for lunch/takeaway. Have to come back to try other items on the menu.
