Review Pepper Cafe - Melbourne

Ashlee Hammond
My favourite local cafe! The coffee is consistently fantastic and the food is always great too. All the staff are amazing, they would often leave little notes (or sketches of my dogs) on top of my coffee during lockdown which really brightened a dreary winter lockdown day! Simon the owner knows an impressive number of locals (and their dogs) by name, and sitting by the fire with a coffee & fruit toast during winter is a must.

My husband didn't mind his bacon. It was crispy - abit too crispy in some bits. The cauliflower salad was.. well... interesting. I'm a vegetarian and still felt like a goat eating it. The coffee and hot choc were average. We'll probably not go again unless we have absolutely no other option.

Good service, lovely food and coffee in a great little spot. I had the burnt cauliflower dish and it came with a fabulous fresh green herb flowery salad. Loved it. A place to make regular.
Kaspar
Lovely old building on the corner and the staff were very friendly. A must for brunch. The breakfast burrito was amazing as was the coffee. Plenty of vegan options available too.
Clarissa Chia
Great service, great coffee. Perfect poached eggs, sourdough was okay. Must try their sandwiches

Nice cafe. Slightly pricey for what you get but food was overall good quality.

Dropped in for breakfast as I am a new local, asked if I was eating and got offered a coffee. Coffee came promptly and after drinking it I sat for 20 min waiting to be offered breakfast. Wasn't offered another coffee or breakfast so I paid and left. Will not come back and defiantly will not recommend!

The coffee is below average now and if you complain the woman with the fancy eyeshadow gives you attitude. The male owner is always lovely and knows most people by name. If this is the only place to get coffee it’s worth it but I would avoid. Shame it use to be really good.
Darija Milevska
Love the coffee here and my vegan salad full of greens was delicious!
Chelsea
Lovely cafe, great food variety. Friendly staff. Unfortunately at the time we went it was busy and not enough indoor seating for a cold, windy, wet day

This little gem will forever be my favourite brunch spot. Please send me the recipe for your potato gratin or please let me order a big pan one day a year so I can nap happily ever after demolishing it. So good!

Came here on a Tuesday morning and heaps of people popping in for coffees. Great coffee cake, so moist and heaps of flavour. Got a soy flat white and soy chai latte and it was made to perfection

The food and coffee is beautiful. But the wait time is what let me down. I came in here to get a quick coffee before my train was going to arrive. I went in here at 9:13am and came out around 9:40am. I missed my train as I didn’t think it would take this long to make one coffee. I have been here many times before and I do know they take a very long time but as I said I had a lot of time and didn’t think it would take them more then 15 minutes. There was only one girl behind the coffee machine and I understand it’s peak hour but they could’ve fastened up the service if there was someone there helping her or if she wasn’t making one coffee at a time. I have been a barista before and know that it is possible to make up to 2-4 coffees at once. I would only come back here if I had an immense time to spend. Other than that no amount of quality coffee is worth a 30 minute wait. This is not a one time experience this has happened before.

I was a tourist visiting Melbourne. The location close to Newmarket station. I tried cappuccino here and it was good coffee. My stars tell the taste.

I have been staying in the area for the past couple of weekends and it is always busy here. There is usually a line outside too - which doesnt help with having a relaxed breakfast as it can make you feel like you should hurry and finish given people waiting inside for tables. Not their fault, but just something i noticed compared to others at peak times.

I ordered fried eggs with toast and bacon. The dish was mostly enjoyable. I like my bacon crispy so no fat is chewy. I would say it was 90% crispy and how i like it but still enjoyable. The eggs were fried. But i guess i should have been more specific as the eggs came out sunny side up. The servers should ask if you want sunny side or over easy as this can make or break a meal. Some of the white wasnt fully cooked - which is how poached eggs can also be, but it was just a tad too much than it should have been. I just pushed it off so it was fine though and good amount of run. Unlike others in the area, the toast was good and easy to cut which many have been a little tougher to chew/cut so that was a plus.

The latte i had was really good. I did get one take away another time but it took 15 minutes to come out because of the skip app they use which means a lot of people are ahead of your order i guess. Hopefully they sort out a system for that so people arent waiting so long. It wasnt overly busy that morning either. Just a little annoying.

Overall i would come back. I would order the same meal but get either scrambled or over easy so its cooked on both sides. A nice place with friendly staff. I can see why people like it here.

My partner and I had brunch here recently, we sat outside in the sunshine. The cafe has a nice ambience with approachable staff.

My partner ordered the pork benedict which he thoroughly enjoyed and I ordered the steak sandwich which was so so. The steak had a lot of fat on it which I didn't particularly like and the taste of the steak overall was bland. I would give this dish a miss next time.

My iced latte was really good and my partner enjoyed his juice.
A lovely cafe, I think I just ordered the wrong dish here.

Peppers was our brunch spot this rainy, cold October morning. A warming, welcoming cafe, we settled into our coffees whilst waiting for our meals. Husband had the NY bagel and I had the protein bowl with poached egg.
Both dishes were tasty, I particularly enjoyed the mix of kale, broccoli and asparagus. The coffee was good and service friendly.
Other items on the menu looked appealing and I’d like to go back for lunch at some stage.
It was busy with a constant flow of patrons and although we knew there were people waiting for a table, we weren’t rushed to finish our meals or pay for our meal.

Great local cafe with welcoming and friendly staff. Classic well priced menu, I've always had good experiences here whether I'm just grabbing a coffee to go or sitting down for a meal. If you happen to pop by on a Saturday be sure to grab a doughnut, baked that morning and delivered by the well rebounded doughboys doughnuts. Get in early they will go quick!

Always a busy cafe. Look to get a table out the back. Food is great and service is good. Great neighbourhood hangout. Right opposite Newmarket train station.
Cheesy.boys
Cute little cafe positioned opposite Newmarket Station. The coffee is nice and the staff are usually very friendly. The menu is on the smaller side and dishes aren’t anything really exciting. All in all a nice spot to grab a coffee with friends if you’re in the area.
Youbliss
Average ok comfortable place for coffee and glass of wine
Staffs are very friendly
Me and my partner come a lot for dinner (pizza n pasta) pizza is always so good but pasta sometimes good sometimes not really
I guess it’s just different chef cooked ?
The gnocchi used to be amazing melting in my mouse but thesedays gnocchi tasted like a bit chewing:(
I hope gnocchi taste come back soon
Shivam
Nice cozy place in Newmarket heart of Flemington.
The ambience is pleasant with friendly staff and a menu with variety.
Strong tasting coffee much recommended for coffee lovers.
Penguineats
From the affordable prices, a small yet well executed menu, generous portion sizes and not to mention friendly and hospitable service, Pepper excels on petty much all fronts as a humble neighbourhood cafe and caters well to the locals of Flemington.
Needless to say, our meal here did not disappoint one bit and it’s truly a shame we haven’t discovered this neighbourhood gem any sooner.

Food: 4.5/5
Staff: 4/5
Decor: 3.5/5
Will return? YES!

A lovely corner house turned into a cafe style restaurant made our eyes pop so we decided to try it out. It was quite busy and we got a lovely private balcony table. Ordered homemade lasagne and the power food salad. They were both amazingly tasty and we would get them again! Great portions, reasonably priced, will return!
Urbanette
Started going here as they are my only local on Skip. The staff are friendly and the coffee is usually ready by the time I arrive. This is good for me as I work from home and can get my coffee quickly and easily. Haven’t eaten in but would like to soon. Highly recommended.
Jessica Nem Singh
Ordered coffee through the skip app and asked specifically for a "bring your own cup". Brought my keep cup in and they had already made the coffee in a disposable cup. Really disappointing. Upon Checking the receipt they had already circled it (see photo attached). Please be more conscious of the environment.

Coffee tasted fine. Soy was too hot.
Dan New
See the remains of an amazing, delectable piece of crispy skinned rockling, with fennel salad and the most flavoursome potato au gratin. Cooked to perfection. Enjoyed in a light, sun filled, popular locale.
Timinmelbourne
Went for a take away coffee. The service was really good, as I was served by a lovely friendly lady.

Nice outdoor seating in full sun was all booked out so get in early haha

My piccolo tasted great, w a really good flavour but bloody hot!

I'd definitely go back again to try some food next time. And I'll be asking for a warm to hot coffee lol
"JT" Jeffrie Trika
Just don't asked for a take-away coffee paper cup ..... :-)

Latte wise it was pretty good for $4.00/small, it seems like the average coffee price in Melbourne these days, however not value for money .... check out Nuts About Coffee, Blackburn at $3.20, you'll get a fantastic organic coffee and won't get a lecture on wasting take-away paper cups :-)

On the other hand $4.50 Chocolate Fudge was divine, albeit small portion.

The place is still quirky and interesting after a couple visits over the years, stay outdoor when it's not raining, new set too. JT-21/08/2017.

I work in the area and this a great local spot. Its always busy for a reason.... Good coffee, food and service with a smile. Not to mention the corner spot gets great morning sun. Dog friendly, baby freindly and all walks of life come here creating a pleasant atmosphere.
Melbourne's Goodie Foodie
Standard of food and service has really dropped lately but high prices unfortunately still remain for the small portion sizes. Service is slow and snobby so definitely don't eat here or get a coffee if you're in a hurry that day. Lunch menu is quite limited but dinner menu is even worse. Pasta options are limited to bolognese, cream and aglio olio (such simple bases) and the woodfire pizza isn't anything to rave about. Slow to come out, hard crust and toppings are miserly on an already small pizza size for the price.
KnowingMelbourne
The coffee is great here and that she's by how packed it gets on weekends. Last time I went I had the vegan bagel. A delicious fresh bagel filled with mixed roast veggies and rocket.
K2
This place used to be really good and quirky, now it's just a plain cafe grinding out pre-cooked breakfast orders that are luke warm at best and average, dare say it bland coffees. Had the hygiene breakfast, the poached eggs were runny but rubbery and barely warm, the potato gratin was a day old as the potato was grey and also barely lukewarm . When you wait 20 minutes for a meal surely it can't that long to reheat the main elements and toss them on the plate, the serving of the obviously pre-cooked bacon was generous though. Times must be tough for Cafes now that you only get a wafer thin serving of bread these days for your two poached eggs.
The Dear Luncher
Superb coffee. The first time The Dear Luncher tried the coffee her was back in 2009, and nearly 8 years later they are still producing great caffeinated beverages for Flemington locals.
Amanda Tan
The food was amazing, ordered the calamari pasta which was cooked with olive oil. I think they nailed the aglio e olio pasta perfectly as the pasta was perfectly coated with seasoned olive oil and balanced with some tomatoes. My partner ordered poached eggs with sourdough and bacon, we think it was really good too. I also ordered the chai latte which was a big disappointment. It tasted like hot milk and there were no hints of chai at all.
Josephine
Pepper has a great ambience and is located in a rather quiet neighbourhood with ample parking space. We sat outdoors as the cafe had prior bookings (it'd be best if you call before you go). We ordered the hot chocolate ($4.50), Pork benedict ($14.50), Smashed avocado ($16.50) and Acai bowl ($14). The hot chocolate left a deep impression as it looked really pretty (definitely insta-worthy), though it didn't taste as good. The pork benedict had really good flavours; normal portion but very delish (it was my favourite)! The smashed avocado was rather interesting as the avocado was used as a spread and the poached eggs complimented the dish really well. It was my first time trying Acai and i loved it; at Pepper's, it wasn't too sweet and the yoghurt didn't taste strong (not a fan of yoghurts btw). Overall, the service was great, but the drinks and food could have been served faster, especially since there wasn't alot of customers that came before us.
Anne
Good service by the staff, good quality of coffee when I'm on the go. Small place but great atmosphere all around. Great way to catch up with friends and family.
Teafo
I came here for a coffee as another local fave was full. Ordered a latte, which was way too weak for my liking - I'd say half a shot of coffee. Couldn't finish it, and as I got up to pay one of the staff asked me if there was a problem with the coffee as he could see it was still half full. I do not like to complain, but seeing as i was asked directly, I told him it was a little weak for my liking. He offered to make me a new one and when i politely refused he gave it to me on the house! Great customer service. Food looked great but I didn't have the time to try it.
Nic And Zoe Eat Stuff
I (Nic) came here for my morning coffee's and was always welcomed with warm and friendly service. Prompt service of coffee even in the morning rushes. Never had food eat in so can't attest to the quality of food, but happily recommend for a standard cup of coffee.

Just across Newmarket station and plenty of parking at Woolies, Pepper Cafe is very accessible. Went here for a business meeting once and the coffee was amazing, almond croissant was fairly decent as well. Went back again for a weekend brunch. Service was alright, we were attended to straight away. Manager gave us the wrong order of drinks but was happy to amend it.

My word, such a beautiful menu as in literally, almost didn't want to give it back. Had the pork Benedict and salmon sandwich. Pork benedict came with two dark fried pork patties with poach eggs. Felt that the pork was a bit too salty for my liking. Patty falls apart quite easily, a hearty meal I would say. Coffee on that day was alright as well. It's a nice cosy spot for a simple brunch that does the job.
Hyperground
The barista is snob and ignorant! I ordered coffees for take away and I thought the barista called my name so I approached and asked him but he just looked at me and ignored me. I asked him twice and keeps ignored me! Never felt so embarrassed and coffee taste shit too.

Good luck competing with other established and new ones in the area with that kind of attitude!

Ordered:
The lunch special; 🍝Angel Hair Pasta: with calamari, chili, tomatoes, garlic and asparagus ($16.50)

Food review:
🎸A really filling portion of pasta. First time having angel hair pasta which ended up being quite a lot and the calamari was perfectly cooked. Easy to bite through yet a little chewy.
My main problem was the pool of oil at the bottom of the bowl though, so that was kinda weird.

Service:
We walked a fair way down this street before deciding to stop here. The name of the cafe wasn't clear - at first I thought it was called the Library but no, it was this little gem! Staff were generally quite friendly and attentive and the atmosphere was generally pretty chill.

Conclusion:
Great homely place to get a bite to eat as well as catch up. Perfect to sit outside during sunny, warm weather.
Katherine
Great place for a quick coffee on the way to the train station in the mornings. The cafe itself has a wonderful cosy vibe, fits in perfectly along Pin Oak Cresent.

I was looking a nice decant filter coffee around Melbourne, such a long time. Finally I found my spot ! The best filter coffee so far in Melbourne, you feel all the flavours inside the coffee ☕️👌🏻 Go and try !
Izzfizz101
Had steak sandwiche, lamb salad and tried the iced coffee. The service was v.good and really relaxing but proficient and decent servings ,also relaxed seating choices inside and out

Just bought coffees this morning pretty average unfortunately more like hot milk then coffee shame

Went again, buffet style food quality, reheated -sad, coffee better, just passable now, barely.
CheeseAndCrackers
Great little spot in Flemington. Food was on point, I had the smashed avo with home made dukkah and poached egg. It was really morerish and filling. Tea by T2 is always a winner. My dining companion coffee afficinado rated the flat white 'delicious' and enjoyed their steak sandwich. Lovely brunch. Cheers!
Giorgio Barcaiolo Battaglini
Lovely venue in a convenient location just in front of Newmarket train station. Good coffee and kind service. Breakkie is good enough. Pizza is good although not super crunchy. But it has that "housemade" consistency that cures homesick. Normally very busy, better not pop there in rush days.
Paristralia
Fantastic spot. Love coming here. Always a relaxed and professional ambiance with excellent service, great food and splendid coffee. I most recently tried the venue juice (A+) and mushrooms with hummus, creamy feta and egg: happy to report that they were very patient and flexible with my request for substitution. They even took a bowl of water out for my dogs and kept an eye on them. Pepper is consistently excellent!
Magpie
A place I make a point of dropping in on if I am in the area. Most times for excellent coffee however occasionally for a late lazy breakfast or lunch. Have been visiting for two or three years now. Always good. Although open in the evenings have not had the opportunity to sample their much admired pizzas and a glass or two of red.
This place is always buzzing and the staff are friendly and very efficient.
Charlotte Huddle
Really good food! I ordered the Beetroot and lamb, which had some amazingly cooked shredded lamb. Flavours matched beautifully, a genuinely great dish! Big breakfast was also good, nice flavours and home made beans, which is a plus! Definitely coming again :)
Louise Anne Baring
What can I say? Pepper Cafe is still the hottest spot in Flemington for amazing coffee, friendly service, fresh and interesting food. If you haven't tried their dinner menu it is the perfect for relaxing after a hard day, enjoying a gorgeous pasta or pizza and perfectly made cocktail if that takes your fancy! Love love love this place- you won't be disappointed!!
Bella Cameron
Great breakfast menu - tasty, classic dishes like smashed avocado on toast. Fantastic cakes, especially the red velvet cake, is incredible - since moving away I miss it a lot. However, the real magic of Pepper is during the evening. The pizzas are great, the wine is great, the atmosphere is great, the staff is friendly, the prices are reasonable. I have moved away recently and miss it being my local!
Paul Innes
I ordered their "Hygienic Breakfast", waited 25 minutes, while another couple seated after us revived their meal first, to then receive mine with no chorizo, cold eggs and cold tomato. Considering it was a small size and paid over $19, felt like I was in Perth, very disappointing.
Neetz88
We always go past peppers on our way to Kensington station and we're always sucked in to grab a great coffee for our journey. Lovely cafe that does some great breakfast and brunch options and ,in the evenings, becomes this moody, suave dinner option with great pizzas and wine on offer. It's great to have places like these nearby.
Brunch Lover
A beautiful cosy cafe with an incredible atmosphere. Every single staff member was super friendly and welcoming. It was very busy (& apparently always is) which shows just how popular it is. Despite how busy it was, staff were attentive and food & coffee were served quickly. I ordered the smashed avocado and loved the flavour the dukkah and goats feta brought to the dish. My friend ordered the granola and raved about how tasty it was. Meals were delicious, coffee was delicious and it was a wonderful experience! (just realised I forgot to take a photo of my meal 😔)
Bopnbeep
This cosy breakfast spot is always busy, even during weekdays. I stopped in for a coffee to go and was politely greeted. Service was prompt, staff were friendly and coffee was good. I'll definitely be returning to try some of the tasty looking menu.

15/11 - finally had brunch here, friendly staff good variety of options and some delicious looking cakes. The chocolate milkshake was enormous.
ShaSha
One of my favourites cafes in all of Melbourne. Cafe in a spot that has that classic village feel on a corner, really homely and cosy spot and the owner is a delight. Love the coffee, love the service, and poached eggs are perfecto.
Shaie25
The coffee is excellent and very satisfying. The staff are welcoming towards their customers and the place has a hipster Fitzroy vibe style going. I really recommend this place for a lovely morning breakfast, or even a weekend brunch with your loved one 👍🏼
Teomelvin39
Food: had the chicken patties with eggs. Though the portion was smaller than expected, I would expect a carbohydrate to go with it. Amidst this, it was well done with a balance of texture and taste. I would have expect a little more kick/spice for the patties.

Coffee: above average coffee, smooth and creamy coffee.

Service: friendly service. Although it took us a while to get order.
TheyCallHimX
Serving sizes are a little small, but the quality is top notch so it balances out.

Staff are super friendly which is always nice and service was surprisingly quick.

Highly recommend.
Amy
Friendly staff and good food. Love the little nook at the back. Busy to move through when it's busy tho. Catch it on a nice rainy day off and it's just the best.
Mark Hoffmann
This is our local favourite so this is a slightly biased review. Friendly staff and owner. Tasty food. Good prices. Best coffee around. Convenient location across from Newmarket train station. The only con is that parking nearby can be tricky on the weekends. Recommend trying the avocado smash.
Nikki
Pepper now has almond milk! I haven't been here in a while and it's so good to see they've finally got dairy alternative milk. The prices can be on the expensive side even though the food is delicious. $4.90 for a large coffee isn't too bad compared to $5+ in the city! I would recommend this place for sure.
Mo
I love pepper. The staff are warm and welcoming, even when they are really busy (which is all the time). Food is tasty too! I pretty much always get avo on toast- delicious. We go for brunch there about once a month and have always had a fantastic experience.
Chewynoms
Great atmosphere and service. Waitress was always friendly and asking if I needed anything else. Food was decent but portion was a let down. $14.5 for eggs benedict as shown in the pic was quite a rip off.

Nonetheless their chai latte was amazing and I'll go back for that. :)
Burger Hunter
Decent menu, delicious treats, coffee is unpredictable though. Really nice nook up the back with booths and a fire. You have to be proactive with wait staff as they don't seem to really have a system going on but that doesn't bother me. Will be back.
Ishan De Silva
To Start off with great coffee! Friendly staff, always welcoming and accommodating. Food is really good and reasonably priced. Only down side is the cafe is quite small and tables are a bit cramped, but understandable as it's an old Victorian house turned into a cafe.
Jonathan Wong
Fantastic atmosphere with the fire at the back. Wonderful gnocchi, wine and pizza.
Chai latte and desserts as well.
Went here twice in two weeks.
Marko Seperic
Good and bad. I love this restataurant but I was disappointed with smashed avocado portion size, for 14.00 dollars you get very little not enough for grown adult to feel full. Also there was very little avocado involved in something that's called smashed avocado. Stuff is always friendly.
Lulu T. Legrand
Not impressed. I had breakfast the other day here, as this was one of the few cafes open early in the morning.

The place is very cozy and I love the style, but service is not good, coffee is OK, and the breakfast was mediocre at its best.

I found the staff a bit cold and unwelcoming. Yes, it is early, but If I can make the effort and come out of my shelf and treat people with a smile and with courtesy, I expect people working in hospitality to do at least the same.

There was a huge amount of take-away people dropping by, so many that the baristas could barely breath. However, if they were organised or better managed, things would be rolling. But they were not.
.
I mentioned upon entering that I was in a hurry. The guy in the kitchen received my order more than 5 minutes after I put it through, when he popped up in the entrance area and the main barista told him/her. I could hear it. So, I was in disbelief. The baristas were overwhelmed, but hey, you hire another staff member for peak hours to avoid that, or just implement an electronic system in which the person in the kitchen sees the orders as soon as they are put through.

No hurry in cooking either, even though most visitors were there just for coffee and for dine in. I mentioned to one of the waitresses that I was in a hurry, with barely ten minutes left. Then, my breakfast arrived immediately. All would had been forgotten if the food had been great, but it was not. I ordered the Benedict eggs, and they were tiny in size, badly prepared, the toast thick and not properly toasted, the Benedict sauce tasteless, the eggs a bit undercooked. Coffee was OK.

In short, not inviting to return.
Katherine Sanchez
Good option for a nice brunch. I love the feel of this little corner cafe. Consistently good food and beverages. I don't love the fact that I always have to wait for a table, and the service is a bit patchy, but we'll keep coming back. With Streat closed, it's one of the best options in this strip.
Bloor
Friendly service and food/coffee is always good! Great cafe to have in Flemington, we go all the time!
The Pet Roo
Friday night dinner with a few friends, Pepper is transformed into an Italian trattoria with pizza and pasta on the menu. I ordered the vegetarian pizza with pumpkin, caramelised onion, mozzarella and pine nuts, absolutely perfect with a beautiful thin crispy crust. One of my friends had the salami pizza and the other friend ordered the pear salad which he raved on about all evening. At last Flemington is starting to break away from just offering Asian cuisine set in busy noisy restaurants. Pepper is a calming oasis offering delicious food and a fantastic ambiance
Rosanna
Had only been there previously for coffee and it is always packed. We enjoyed our brunch and are looking forward to going back.
Hungrycookie
Pepper is a cosy neighbourhood cafe, nestled in the corner of Pin Oak Crescent. It sits amongst the quaint cottages and Victorian housing that distinguishes the area. Pepper was one of the first brunch cafes to open in Flemington. Years later, it’s still a popular spot for locals. An ebony blackboard advertises the specials and drinks of the day with a seasonal brunch/lunch menu to entice diners. The potato gnocchi with creamy pumpkin sauce was an autumn special, creamy, decadent and rich – a perfect dish for pasta lovers. Next on the agenda was a sweet treat. Nothing beats the simplicity of vanilla ice cream and strawberry; however the sweet affair was let down by the hardness of the waffles. Kiddies sipping on babycinos. The lone diner, fathoming life over eggs and OJ. Pepper is a great spot for people watching and enjoying a simple meal. Skip the neighbouring Laksa King and enjoy brunch at Pepper.
Jun
Pepper Cafe is a cozy little cafe located just beside New Market train station. This is my second time dining in this unpretentious cafe & I must say I really do like it. There is usually a crowd or a queue but we were lucky that it was half empty on a rainy Monday :)
Anna Spargo-Ryan
So to continue the ‘stack’ trend I ordered the Pepper Stack consisting of smoked salmon, homemade potato latkes ($10 for whoever knows what this actually is), sautéed spinach, poached egg and tomato relish. It came out and was almost too beautiful to eat. Of course I did though. And I ate all of it. Because I’m a pig.
Katherine Chiu
The ristretto ($3.30) was very biting and very acidic. The flavour smelt winey. It was a little watery.
Ms Baklover
Pepper is a genuine, local cafe in a gorgeous pocket of Melbourne. I've stopped by before in the warmer months, where you can loll on the outside tables of an afternoon, order a glass of wine and bask in summer evening sunlight. They're open on Thursday and Friday evenings for pizzas and baked spuds.
BK
Pepper has started opening in the evening and what a great decision that is. My girlfriend and I have been a couple of times. It is the perfect place on a warm evening to sit outside, have a cold drink and eat a really delicious pizza. Would definitely recommend.
A_2d_k
Not impressed. Took away coffee. Name was not called out when ready and coffee just sat at the counter. Coffee was way too hot. Service at the counter was not friendly at all.

Must tey. Lovely staff lovely menu vegan friendly and baked goods!
best coffee I've had in a while, smooth even with soy milk. chai latte smells amazing, my friends loved it.

Best of Everything. We regularly visit Pepper and are never disappointed. The coffee is always made to perfection. It is never bitter, always at an ideal drinking temperature and great coffee-to-froth ratio. Every meal we've had has been delicious and presented with extremely generous portions. This is particularly true of the milkshakes which come in the original stainless steel cups, brimming to the top. The menu offers a great range and changes with enough regularity to keep recurrent visitors interested. The staff, however, is what keeps us coming back. They are friendly, extremely competent and will go above and beyond to assist customers. Being a local favourite, it can be a busy spot, but the staff still manage to provide excellent service. We always feel like royalty and would never go anywhere else.
Danielle
Crap coffee. I've given this cafe 3 changes but that it now. Especially when there's so many good coffee shops in the area.
Ordered a skinny latte. Coffee was cold, 1/3 was just froth and the staff are miserable. I am there at around 8am and the cafe is always busy, not sure why. Maybe because the train station is across the road. Save yourself the disappointed.

Best of the west!. I ventured over to meet some mates who had rated this as their favourite local cafe in the west. Naturally I couldn't wait to see if Pepper was as good as they said. Good signs early when the place had a healthy number of customers and seemed to have a buzz about it. We made out way through to the back room and took a seat. Quite cosy and a very relaxed vibe - a place you could sit for a few hours easily.
I was happy to see and all-day breakfast menu that hit all the right areas. As i usually do, i opted for the porridge and couldn't have been happier. Great texture, topped with caramelised banana and i added a side of yoghurt. It was pretty close to perfection. My two coffees also hit the spot (di bella coffee beans), creamy and smooth.
Staff are friendly and I loved everything about it.
If only it was close to home...
Deanricho_1999
Festivus - one of the better breakfast spots. One of the better breakfast spots
very busy and kind of rushed out after eating which annoys me
anyhow eggs awesome ;)
staff friendly
nice amebience
Sienna
I had breakfast here on Thursday morning. The staff were friendly and the coffee was nice. We sat in the back room amd were totally smoked out by an open fire. Ash was going everywhere and ended up in our food. The food was ok... didn't really meet the expectations of the menu description. My bruchetta was basically tomato on toast - it lacked the avocado and feta. Portions were very small that day.
Anny
I would relocate to Flemmington purely to eat their smashed avocado on freshly baked gluten free bread every morning. Their coffees are perfect temperature, the sercice is relaxed and I felt utterly at home. Definitely recommend!

Great location, bit too pricey for the food quality. I love the ambience of the place, the wait staff are great but the food was just okay. Somehow when ever I order a breakfast type meal here, it gets served in a frying pan and is generally a bit bland - perhaps too saucy. I ordered baked eggs last time and the meal came out 5 to 10 minutes after my friend's meal and the whites were still a bit runny. At $17, it's a bit pricey for a breakfast in the suburbs that doesn't wow. I'd go back for coffee, but not food.

Good is great. Most of the staff are great. Attitude that comes with the coffee makes the whole day a little less pleasant

Best in Flemington. Pepper is picture perfect. On the corner of Norwood and Pin Oak, the staff add to the lovely relaxed feel – especially David, Nicola and Pat – I have never had a bad anything with these guys on. Coffee is always great, service is delivered with a smile, and always a lovely informative chat about the food! Food is always incredibly well presented and mouth watering, love the wood boards and industrial settings with bright eclectic colours.
Pepper is a must, to add to your Melbourne Brunch List. (I am lucky as it is my local)
I only wish they would bring back their chicken burger – delicious!

A Flemington Icon.. I've been coming to Pepper for years and I've never had a bad experience. Coffee is great, the staff are really friendly and welcoming. You must order the Pesto Eggs. So good.

Community hub. I have been coming to this cafe for four years now, and I have watched it grow into a real community hub. The staff are super friendly and chatty (after they've had their first espresso of the day) and the decor is relaxed and atmospheric. Kudos to the awesome music these guys play too! Great food, especially the gluten free options that seem to be available on every dish, and excellent coffee supplied by DiBella. Trying to get a seat on the weekends is tricky but worth the wait, as the staff will always go out of their way to get you what you want. Thanks for four awesome years guys!

Best Coffee In Melbourne. Since moving to Melbournes north-west I have been looking for the perfect haunt for my caffeine fix. A place that won't judge me for getting breakfast at 2 in the afternoon and also somewhere with friendly staff and nice music. I have truly found a home at Pepper! The coffee is heavenly, the food is delicious with great portion sizes and a price to match! The perfect cafe whether you are dashing for the train and need your morning coffee, or looking for a sit down meal with friends. I am hooked!

Sour taste. What started as a pleasant and tasty lunch here left a sour taste when I was told that if you ask for substitutions you will be charged for the full price plus the substituted item. Seems crazy when you ask for beans to be left off your dish but can they give you chorizo instead and both cost the same under extras on the menu.
I was told that was because the costed out the dishes but I imagine they do the same with the extras.
To give them their due, they did reduce the bill as I told them I wasn't informed of this beforehand but it leaves me thinking twice before going again.

Great for a quick coffee in the morning. Weekend brunch lacks value. Don't bother ordering anything with feta - feta seems to be given out like lobster to slaves. None.

Pepper is what made me want to buy in Flemington, first went here 5 years ago whilst waiting for my apartment inspection to open and have been coming ever since. Fabulous, solid local that always delivers.

Been here a couple of times for brunch, corn fritters are really good, service is good, prices a bit steep only because my glasses were chipped & teapot for tea was cracked on the spout end, so yeah i wouldnt mind paying those prices if the crockery wasnt falling apart, other than that place is good

Fast, fresh, yummy. I had been trying all the local cafes trying to find decent bacon and eggs for over a year until I finally had some luck at Pepper.
Great staff, quick service, very well priced for the area, and their food is delicious.
Consistently great hollandaise, perfect runny eggs everytime and delicious bacon.
Every meal we have tried is matched in quality.
No snobbery, just great food!
Avoid Kensington (except the 'Rusty Fox), and go for Pepper every time you will not be dissapointed

Superb experience. Great service, friendly waiter and the owner actually gave us a table despite it being booked. The food is awesome especially with reasonable price. Nice ambience.

Been in Flemington for 6 months now and regularly go to Pepper for Breakfast and Lunch. Pesto eggs is a must try, service is great and the coffee is brilliant!

The best. This place is awesome. green eggs are a treat. also has had the gnocci and it is quite delectable! for all the indies the front of pepper has cool chairs and tables and for those who like to sit at a conventional table and chair they have that too. my mum had the beef salad and it was yummy. on easter they had chocolate eggs with a coffee

So lucky this is one of our locals. Since we moved here in 2008, Pepper has been one of our local haunts - why? Great food, delicious coffee and service has always been outstanding. Have taken many a friend to Pepper (aka Girdwood's) and they've told me they'd gladly travel across town to visit Pepper again.

Went there for the first time today after walking by for months and seeing it packed with people and unfortunatly we were a little disappointed. The coffees were burnt and bitter, the breakfast had missing elements and the service, although friendly were so busy that there was a long wait for everything. Generous portions but won't be rushing back.

Off tomatoes, curdled soy milk, no appologies: gross!

Terrible service, walked straight out.. The service is terrible. I've been there a few times, and the only reason why I go back is a.) it's close by and b.) they have decent eats. But my gosh, maybe 2 out of the several times I've been has the service been rated as 'average'. My last experience left me with such a terrible impression on me (with the little expectation I had), that I swore never to go back again. I came in, acknowledged the staff, sat down on a seat near the counter. And for a good 10 minutes or so, no one came to serve me. I walked straight out, and never looked back. Peppers, you should pick up your game in your service or you're going to lose regular customers to nearby cafes. My money is going elsewhere.

Went there on Saturday. Coffee was beautiful. Friend got the salami focaccia toasted which she loved. One thing I did notice was how reasonably priced their breakfast menu was. Will be back
