Review Cafe Latte - Melbourne

Philip Crealy
Visiting from Sydney, Cafe Latte was a very good choice for a cosy business lunch. Light-filled, and comfortable it felt like a classic Melbourne Cafe, but with a high-end polish. The coffee was excellent, and the steak sandwich that followed on was beautifully cooked, served alongside a generous hunk of bacon and greens. A glass of wine seemed like a good idea. It was. A+

I am still thinking about how amazing my brunch was here. A menu unlike others, you will find unique dishes that aren't your run of the mill. The service was attentive and an obvious local treasure with the cafe bustling all morning. We shared the Icelandic salmon dish and the eggs benny and OMG both were stunning! The thought that has gone into these dishes along with the execution is impressive to say the least. Coffee was also really tasty too. I honestly can't wait to return! Thanks for having us, we had an amazing time.

Well, I simply do not have words to describe how amazing the food was! I ordered the wild mushrooms and my partner the beef bourguignon, as you can see in the photo. The mushrooms were simply fantastic, I have never had anything like that before, the mixture of texture combining the polenta, mushrooms, crispy kale and the miso was just perfect! They have a nice range of options so you will not be disappointed. Oh, and the coffee was amazing, of course.

Amazing breakfast with a twist - we had the chili eggs and poached eggs on avo. Very attentive staff and nice location.

If you’ve ever in Toorak area, this cute cafe is definitely where you want to be! Cafe Latte spot has been around for a while but they recently went through renovations & new ownership so they’re coming in hot with great aesthetic and delicious menu ✨ As soon as we walked in we thought the place was so instagrammable and we were so excited to see what their dishes would be. We were also greeted by such friendly staff! Andrew got their eggs benny 🍳 and I got their wild mushroom medley 🍄 paired with lattes using our favorite coffee brand, Padre ☕️ The coffees were great of course and the dishes were so nicely presented. Both of the dishes were so tasty too, we loved the perfectly poached eggs and the corn bread with pulled beef was such a nice combo for the eggs benny. The crunchy kale gave a nice texture balance with the soft mushrooms and polenta. They also told us that their menu changes every 2 months but the eggs benny has been on the menu since day 1 bcs it’s everyone’s favorite and we 100% agree 💯 Next time we visit, I definitely want to try their Banoffee Porridge cause it sounds sooo good!

Love it, fresh innovative food, great coffee

Amazing Cafe, food and drink was phenomenal. Like nothing else in the area. Great service too

Took my mother here for a special occasion , so disappointed in the quality of food . The Veal instead of being soft was like a well done steak and you could barely cut it.<br/>Rather than apologise the waitress was trying to say the Veal was great according to other customers.....<br/> So many other better options for the price .

I have been going to Cafe Latte for years with my family & friends and every time I go it gets better and better. The staff are fantastic and the food is seriously good! I would 100% recommend it to anyone

The staff are always courteous and helpful with menu choices. The only problem is deciding what to order as everything is great, fresh produce prepared well and delicious. I wouldn’t change a thing here, they were even welcoming to my young children.

Not sure what planet this place is on. We came in looking for desert. There were 3 tables vacant, and we wanted one. Fair enough that desert and drinks probably isn’t the premium end of the bill but there weren’t people lining up outside begging to get in. <br/><br/>See you some time never!

A group of us came here for a birthday dinner on Thursday. We ordered a range of entrees to share. I thoroughly enjoyed the gamberoni and calamari. The prawns were cooked to perfection and the calamari dish, with rocket and capers was well balanced. For mains, we ordered the fish of the day, spaghettini and risotto. The fish was well cooked but it was lacking a crispy skin. The other guests were raving about the spaghettini and risotto. Service was friendly and efficient.

This little cafe in Hawksburn has a cosy Italian vibe with a great atmosphere. The staff are charming and friendly. On one occasion I was there with a large group In the private room upstairs and the food was bland and inedible. Every person on my table was underwhelmed with the food but I put it down to being a large group and a set menu with little choice. I gave it another go with a small party of four sitting in the main dining room for a cosy mid week girls dinner. The waiter was charming but didn’t offer us a wine list. We asked him to recommend a bottle of Prosecco and he raved about one and we said yes as we hadn’t seen a wine list and by that stage were eager to enjoy a glass of bubbles. We all ordered different meals. The crab pasta was bland and tasteless. It lacked flavour and required more garlic, seasoning (I’m not sure what else as I am not a chef!). The other diners I was with said their meals were equally bland. When we got the bill we were horrified. The waiter had supplied us with a bottle of Prosecco that cost over $150. We were all too shocked to mention this when paying the bill. We all felt we should have been told the price of the Prosecco or given the option of looking at the wine list to choose one that was more affordable. So the bland tasting food and the cheeky assumption that we wouldn’t care about the price of wine is the reason I am writing this review.

Fabulous little Italian restaurant. Service is excellent and wine and food delicious. Love the bread, burrata, fish and brussel sprouts. Spagattini with bugs was delicious. MUCH Better than the overall rating suggests!!!

Booking experience was great, service was ok but here are a few things that didn’t meet the expectation of a $100/head restaurant: <br/>1. Waiter serving wrong dish to each person. There were only two of us so it shouldn’t be difficult. <br/>2. T-Bone steak was grossly overpriced at $55 just for the meat then you had to add your own sides at extra cost. When the t-bone arrived it was literally a piece of meat sitting in the middle of a plate. Over cooked, black charcoal burnt all over and tough to eat. <br/>3. The spaghettini with Morton Bay bugs was so salty it was inedible. The quantity of seafood in the dish was minimal. <br/>Overall a disappointing experience for my birthday dinner with my wife. We won’t be back.

Originally only open for the breakfast and lunch trade, over the last 20 years Cafe Latte has evolved to include dinner service as well. Under the direction of owner Luca Lorusso, Caffe Latte presents its beloved traditional dishes in a modern way, rather than going down the avant garde route.
The City Lane
Celebrating 25 years in the restaurant industry, Cafe Latte successfully embodies traditionalism merging with progressive modernism. Since its inception in 1991 as a casual café serving coffee, breakfast and lunch, it has continued to keep up with the constantly changing trends of the Melbourne hospitality scene, eventually becoming the finer dining restaurant it is known as today.

Fantastic service and delicious food. The restaurant addressed my garlic allergy on a moments notice. The Ambience was great. A definite return for another delicious meal.

Great food, friendly wait staff, candlelit ambiance, we'll be back! <br/>Home made pasta is excellent. Can't wait to try the other options on the menu. <br/>

Our experience was just divine! Everything from the perfectly chilled beer to the beautifully presented tiramisu was excellent. The handmade pasta was authentic and there was a lovely quiet and romantic feel to the place. Staff were attentive and spot on. Can't fault it.
Courtney Godfrey
The most delicious food with an excellent wine list to match. I hightly recommend you follow the staff guidence for food and wine matching. Very generous with pouring wine by the glass! My new favourite.
Teresa Tran
Stumbled upon this quaint place by accident today. We were completely blown away by our three course meal, everything was a 5/5 and that tiramisu (OMG a must eat even if you are full)... Every member of staff was exceptionally kind and friendly to our needs.<br/><br/>Looking forward to our next visit!

WEll I went here and had a latte. How could I not. <br/>And everyone is in white shirts, the customers match the decor (white tablecloths)<br/>The coffee is okay but next time gotta wear the Toorak uniform white shirt and pearl necklace

My wife and I visited Cafe Latte recently to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Once a more regular supporter of this well established and iconic local restaurant, we hadn't been for some time and reluctant to return after hearing of some other patrons poor experiences. So happy we came again, the floor staff led by Marco were great and very professional - accommodating, attentive but not overbearing. We loved the menu and it was difficult to choose so we decided to select a number of dishes and share so we got to taste a range of flavours. We may have ordered too much food but you couldn't really fault the presentation, authenticity or flavours of any of the dishes. Some of our favourites were the Eggplant Paramagiana, Cavatelli pasta with scallops and cherry tomatoes, and the Veal Scaloppine. We had a great night and really thank Marco and his team for making this an anniversary to remember. Our next visit will be much sooner.

Staff, decor, and wine list are great! The menu sounds brilliant, however it did not deliver as expected. We ordered the stuffed zucchini flowers for entree, followed by Agnolotti and the Cavatelli, including a side of beans for main. The entree was yum, but there was no where near enough sauce, and the overall flavour tasted like a fish n chip shop deep fried fish stick. The mains, it was as though 2 different chefs had cooked them, the agnolotti (filled with duck) was chewy, the pasta was under cooked and too thick, it was not cooked well. The was no where near enough sauce and more salt was needed. Overall a failure and I would recommend the chefs redesign the dish. The Cavatelli on the other hand was great, the pasta was perfect, well cooked, the sauce was well seasoned and had flavour. The side of beans, yum, I could of had them on their own. <br/><br/>Overall, even though the staff were great, and the venue had a great feel, I was there for the food, and it did not delivery. The food was inconsistent which is a shame.<br/><br/>A tip to the chefs, taste when you cook, season, season, season, and always, always put enough sauce.

If you read my reviews you'll know I'm loath to knock any restaurant who works their butt-off to deliver their best fare day-in and day-out to everyone who walks through their door.  Anyone can have a poor night, or even turn out a poor meal on a good night every now and again, that's the nature of hospitality. It's with that context of understanding that I'm reviewing Cafe Late in less than glowing terms. <br/><br/>We booked early week for Saturday night for around 7. We were disappointed to find ourselves on a table next to the door. It was a cold night and all evening as people entered and exited we were served a blast of unpleasant cold air. I understand that someone has to sit near the door, but at a $100 per head restaurant there shouldn't be any seats that have to put up with that. The menu read beautifully and the service was impeccable. We ordered three courses, I had the arancini, a baked gnocchi dish and the classic Italian donuts. Each sounded amazing on the menu, but were unimpressive. Again the dishes were all far from inedible, but at this price point my expectation is amazingly crafted flavours - for each and every dish.<br/><br/>Hospitality is highly competitive and at this price point there's no room for error in the Melbourne market. The restaurant was booked-out with walk in diners being turned away all night (delivering a couple of blasts of cold to our table each time), so they must be doing plenty right. Perhaps we were unfortunate and ordered poorly, but I'm afraid I wont be back and can only score them a 3 out of 5.

This is one of my favourite Italian eatery- classy, cosy atmosphere with the best service! If you want real Italian food and not the 'touristy' Italian food, this is the place to go to. I have ordered almost everything on their menu, and each one of the dish just as yummy as the next. Price is also not over the top, and with really good servings. The waiters are always so helpful and accommodating- a special thank you to the guys who served me last Tuesday in particular, Marco! Looking forward to their live Jazz night this Wednesday.

25 years later...and still going strong! Love this Melbourne establishment. Comfort food, beautiful surroundings, great Italian service. Tick, tick, tick! Their live jazz nights once a month are extra special.
Jasmine
Me and my partner came for dinner on Saturday night and both agreed how outstanding this restaurant is. I had one of the beautiful pasta dishes with a delicious lamb ragu and my partner had the veal, both meals where full of flavour and very well presented. But this restaurant is so much more than just the food, the atmosphere was just perfect, from the moment we walked in the door we felt relaxed and welcomed. But the staff are really what makes this place, extremely knowledgable about the food and wine and will go the extra mile to make sure you have a great experience. We will be coming back here again and cannot wait to try something else on the lovely menu. <br/>Thanks to all at Cafe Latte for a great Saturday night

Nice place to come on a breakfast date or having a small catch up with a close friend. Delicious coffee. Friendly service. I would recommend.

Went there for coffee and breakfast , I enjoyed the breakfast , coffee was good , I am going to go for dinner and try there dinner menu , love Italian food.

I went there with my friend coz we are living close by and we came there without booking but we got free table on Saturday night. The place is very cute with all nice kindles and customer service is fantastic, they were quite good at what they do. And we had baby octopus as entry which was very yum but wouldn't highly recommend their calamari a little salty. Main food were very Italian style and we had market fish and duck which were also reasonably nice. Overall, it's a nice restaurant and definitely a place to go out with friends. Their service deserves 5-star.

Love the ambience, the homemade Italian doughnuts in the arvo is a must try, and duck is simply outstanding................... <br/>............

Meal - Booked through Dimmi for a "Set To Please - EXPRESS LUNCH" which includes a Main Meal + Glass of wine - $30. I had the Veal and some others ordered the duck Salad. Right from taste to portion size the dishes were disappointing. The Veal was bland and uninspiring. Im told the duck salad was nothing to write home about either.<br/>Price - Expensive even with the deal. <br/>Portion size - Below average - hardly a main size serving.<br/>Service - Average, When we were around there were 3 people minding about 7-8 tables. It was a little patchy, but our waiter was knowledgeable and friendly.<br/><br/>Overall experience was disappointing and wont bother coming back here again, if you are considering this place try Valentino next door instead, or even better Bistro Thierry if you can get a spot.
Macaulay Hey
Perfect once again! After reading the reviews on here I was scared to venture back to our old favourite, Cafe Latte, but I took the plunge and am glad I did! Excellent service that could not be faulted. The food was top notch just as it used to be. We shared the calamari, arancini balls and antipasto as entrees and they were all superb - the perfect size to share and lovely range of flavours. We then each had a pasta for main course - all of which were a hit (Linguine, Risotto, Spaghetti). Even their rucola salad tasted superb! Will definitely be back to enjoy the quality food and service. Great work by the Cafe Latte team!

An acceptable Italian place in a yummy mummy-enclave packed with airs and graces but deprived of real good food (except for Bistro Thierry a few doors down). The Puglian-accented menu has some interesting and well-delivered dishes such as the veal fecato (liver). The dishes were flavoursome and the bread was worth a special mention.<br/><br/>The service level depends on which waiter you get. The suave Italian was warm, attentive and entertaining, while the younger dude was enthusiastic but got the size of my pasta wrong and never quite realised it. The other waiter clearly noticed the mistake (I ordered an entree size but was served a main size) as I brought it up and he shared a joke on the portion. <br/><br/>However when the bill was presented, I was still charged for the main size, rather than the entree size I had ordered. A bit of a bad taste left on an otherwise pleasant meal. Professionalism and integrity, hello ?! <br/>
Barry
Rather disinterested service, very ordinary over seasoned pasta dish, table not set despite a booking, not very attentive...agree it is over rated and could be so much more pleasant but won't be going back. <br/>
Deb_mckie
Disappointing service. Thanks Cafe Latte for a very disappointing evening....the wait staff were very rude and passive aggressive, making us feel very uncomfortable......not to mention the damp toilet paper in the bathroom. You need to train your staff in better customer service!
Bridierobin
Brilliant. Amazing spot for girls lunch! We each got the quick lunch special, which was the pasta of the day and a glass of house wine.. for $25!! Couldn't fault it. Staff were very welcoming and the overall service was impeccable. Lovely atmosphere, definitely looking forward to our next visit.

Saved by the (adjusted) bill!. We were 'offered' some "special" Italian wine .. seemed rude to refuse, or ask the price! We SHOULD have! Instead, the Bill did!<br/>Over $80 for bottle that in our opinion was good, but not THAT good! Now,the GOOD bits. A: The service WAS good. B:The food WAS good. C: Then 'ambience' , lighting etc WAS good. D: Very important..I could hear my partner speaking .. noise level WAS low.<br/>E: Also important, we could park seconds away ... try doing that in Toorak Rd? F: The staff were 'understanding' re the wine charge, and agreed to adjust the bill ... ensuring that we WILL go again!

Wendycam. Bad experience, took my mum for brunch , the waiter couldnt be bothered and the barrista forgot my coffee then charged me for it<br/>Food was very average
Caroline Cootes
This would have to be the most authentic Italian restaurant in Melbourne. Simple Italian food, amazing flavours, great personal service. Can't fault it. They also have a fantastic wine list from Italy, had a beautiful organic white wine to die for! You must try the Spaghetti prawns with zucchini flower.
The Lionking Diner
Not up to Melbourne standard!. Very dissapointed in the overall experience.<br/><br/>The Eggplant entree was Ok<br/><br/>The main, veal scallopinne was below average, the one zuchinni flower was so bland, in fact it wasn't fresh at all.<br/><br/>Service was also average, Wont be back, not even for a second chance.<br/><br/>Expensive and below average overall...don't bother!
Sonia Chan
Not the best. Went for dinner, the pappardelle ragu was extremely disappointing: dry, tough meat and a sauce that tasted of nothing but tomato paste, needed oil. Dining companion had spaghettini with seafood- pippis were overcooked. Expected more for a place like this
Arbitrage
Seems like pot-luck whether you have a good or terrible experience at this place. At these prices you'd expect somewhat more consistency. Go somewhere you can rely on for a good experience!<br/><br/><br/>-----15 Nov, 2014-----<br/><br/>Rudest waiter! When asked to fill my glass of water, he does just that, leaving my friend's glass almost empty. If he spent as much time concerned about the patrons as he did talking to his mate at the bar, maybe we wouldn't have waited 15 minutes for him to take my card to pay the bill. So many better places in the area where they don't treat you with disdain.
Teresa
Get rid of the waiter. When ordering the meal, the waiter told my partner off, when he started to order. "Ladies first!" he said!,,<br/>Doesn't he know that in fine dining restaurants, the man orders for both. <br/>His ignorance and affected attitude spoils an otherwise lovely little restaurant, and some good food. Such a pity. We will be back, hope we get the really nice Italian waiter, with the impeccabe manners
Mcmahoncj
Poor. Restaurant quarter full for breakfast. Waited 15 minutes for coffee, 30 minutes for breakfast. Eggs cold. Service non existent. Barred for life
Anna Katherine Foley
Dinner at Cafe Latte is really a culinary treat, amazing Italian wine, the staff are friendly and attentive, all with Italian charisma. Having left Melbourne 10 years ago I still say that Cafe Latte is my choice of restaurants in Melbourne, it's where I come home to eat and taste the pleasure of my Melbourne! Grazie Luca lo Russo for nurturing your cucina Puglise.

Amazing! The service was exceptional, the pasta was to die for and what a lovely little venue. Cannot fault... I will definitely be back.

Kingfish drowned in oil, add some acidity or less oil! Tough veal. Dry reheated lasagna. Friendly service but totally average food and overpriced for what it is
James
Stunning. There is a reason Cafe Latte has been around for 20 odd years.<br/><br/>The food, service, atmosphere and authenticity of this place is second to none.<br/><br/>Highly recommend
Jimmy2
Stunning. After 20 odd years Cafe Latte has stood the test of time, and rightfully so. Service is always impeccable, food delicious and the (relatively) new renovations look stunning.<br/><br/>Breakfast, lunch or dinner you can't go wrong!

Absolutely loved this cute authentic Italian restaurant. I had great service that was accompanied by great food. The pasta was amazingly fresh and tasted delicious ! Definitely coming back

Perfect!. After reading all the whingers on here complain about service and food I can honestly say this was a terrific little cafe in Hawksburn Village. <br/><br/>As a local who lives a couple of hundred meters away I have never been in as I was worried about all the negative reviews here but the staff were sincere, efficient and most of all friendly. Some of the best in the area and as helpful as any good cafe.<br/><br/>I had the mushroom and avocado bruschetta and it was a good serve full of flavor. The two soy lattes I had were great and it's nice not having to ask for them served warm as a lot of cafes serve them so hot you burn your mouth yet here it was perfect. I sat outside as I have a baby and liked the space and the waiters were so friendly and took an in my baby which was lovely. <br/><br/>I'll be back again and again! Forget the negative comments on here.. Try for yourself.

Disappointing. So sad when bad service spoils a meal.<br/>What is wrong with staff, when you have to get up from your seat to go and find a waiter to ask what has happened to your order. <br/>It may as well have been a self service cafeteria... But not at those prices!
Dangs
Very average food in small portions and a very expensive! I believe that is why they dont have their menu here!

Theres Always a Reason for Empty Tables. My wife and I just had lunch at Café Latte, our first dining experience there and definitely our last. We have never been treated so rudely and inefficiently by waiting staff. The wine menu was brought out first and we were asked for our drinks order before the food menus were presented. No mention of specials with the menus but later heard other customers being told of the specials.<br/>The food when it arrived was practically dropped on the table by a shaved head person, who we assumed was either the owner or manager, and nearly spilt a glass of wine. Tired salad and tasteless pasta.<br/>Gave up waiting for the bill and paid at the counter.<br/>Strangely, the same shaved head person's demeanour changed completely when talking with what appeared to be his regulars.<br/>Melbourne's better than Café Latte!
Nicole
Bad food, nice venue, average service<br/>We were a group of 9, only 1 of us liked the food. The fish was poorly cooked and the veal looked like a stew! But the lighting and decoration was nice...
Margaret
Nice food, just extremely overpriced for what it is. very small portions with no salad or vegetables included with tiny sides on offer albeit for a lot of extra money, making a very expensive night overall. Not worth it! Don't recommend.
Emily
Disappointing. Cafe latte has been a family favourite of ours for years now, however a string of mediocre visits in the past few months have ensured it is off the regular spot list. This morning I went for breakfast, and while our drinks were ordered and brought to us quickly, we were not offered menus - and then had to wait about 15 minutes to order food in a reasonably quiet cafe. The poached eggs were not appetizing up look at and the yolk was almost cooked through, a far cry from breakfasts here a few years ago. All in all I think both the service and food are lacking, which is sad for a cafe that is something of am institution in the area.
Cetempler
Couldn't fault it. Dined there Saturday October 12th in a group of four, the reservation was made on recommendation but before I had seen the urbanspoon reviews. I was aprehensive to say the least but the food was excellent, the ambiance great and we were even served by the infamous bald headed waiter who was terrific and friendly. The quality is restaurant and not cafe! Others may not have liked it but I would readily return AND I am fussy! The Sicilan beer and Sicilian dessert wine are worth trying.
Peter
Fantastic place to start your day with the breakfast here.love the staff and especially shouldn't forget about the creamy porridge with berries and banana loving it..

An update. We went for dinner. The food was pretty good and the service was up to scratch. But. The wine started at $70 and corkage (we did BYO), was an outrageous. We won’t be back. <br/><br/><br/>A Shocker We went for breakfast.... A Shocker<br/>We went for brekky, and I suspected dodgeness when even tables set for 4 had only 1 menu. I ordered poached eggs plus sides. One egg was solidly overcooked, the second slightly so. The sides were cold. My friend opted for baked eggs. This looked like a tablespoon of cannelini (tinned) had been plonked in a ramikin, covered with tinned tom soup and finished with overcooked eggs. No zing, no spice, no flavour. They could not even get the coffee orders right, or the bill.

Rude Staff. Has the potential to be a great eatery except for the attitude of the staff. The food is your typical well thought out menu with attention to detail. The styling of the venue is lovely. However If you aren't the preferred clientele the owner and waiting staff will make their wrath for daring to venture into their restaurant known. The owner was extremely rude on the last occasion I went, the food took a while and he was too busy buddying up to his regulars, the owner served us and was very unpleasant.. The level of service was intolerable and extremely poor form.
Juliehayesp1
By chance. After opting out of a nearby very noisy restaurant, lucked out getting a table for 4. Bravo on a couple of counts: 1. A real effort at reducing noise has been made in a very subtle but effective way .. Check it out! 2. Interesting and eclectic array of pics, paintings etc on the wall. 3. Coconut macaroons with coffee worth a trip back on their own. And by the way .. Great food and atmosphere.

Love this place! The monthl.... Love this place!<br/>The monthly jazz upstairs has a New York feel. <br/>Always great food. Wonderful owner who's ever hospitable.

Beautiful room. Ok food. Questionable attitude from one waiter in particular. A living example of the white Australia policy. Yummy mummies and ladies with big hair, old money, no time.

Average food and rude service. Worst dining experience I've ever had in Melbourne. <br/>Took my Grandma here as it is near her house. The wait staff were incredibly rude to her, implying that she was unable to order for herself and suggesting that she only have one glass of wine (before she had even had a sip and for no reason). <br/>Food is overpriced. Average Italian at best.
Jonny Mott
Have always wanted to go so I took my wife last night. The service and atmosphere were good but the food was definitely very amateur. What came out on the plate didnt match the menu or what the waiter had advised. All up a good experience but the kitchen needs to lift its game especially for the pricing.
Muzik
The main was tepid and under cooked and the dessert was cold when it is a hot dessert. Won't be going back.

Worlds worst bloke. I'm not sure I'm qualified to write a review...we didn't even get to eat at cafe latte! <br/>I sat down with my wife and we were ignored for 10 mins until I asked the bald headed male waiter for a menu. I got a short reply with attitude and said to my wife..."that 2 strikes, lets see what he comes back with". When he returned after a few minutes he demanded that the table be free by 11.30, and I said to him..."you've lost me mate, you can have your table". He then proceeded to tell us it was our fault for not being seated! <br/>As we walked out he told us never to come back....as if we would! So we sat 2 doors up at the lovely Frau Frau cafe and I can assure him, I will never go back. <br/>Then when I went to urban spoon to see what people thought of them....I have never seen so many bad reviews on a cafe! We weren't the only ones who thought he was a shocking host.
Nameless
AWFUL service. Terribly arrogant and inattentive. We were greeted rudely and generally ignored and left unserved for the rest of the evening. An unenjoyable experience and we will not be returning.
Melburnian Diner
Totally gutted!bad food+poor service+insanely overpriced!. My husband and I wanted to go to Hobba for breakfast this morning but could not get a table (again!) so we went to Hawsburn instead. It was a bad idea to sit down at Cafe Latte.<br/><br/>It is a disgrace for any restaurant to put such a price tag on its food for no good reason. <br/><br/>Don't get me wrong, the coffee was actually quite good.I ordered a serve of baked eggs ($20) and they gave me this: tinned tomato sauce, canned beans,2 eggs and a burnt toast,a burnt toast! I did not mind the wait if the food was worth waiting. <br/>The thing that disgusted me the most was: the chef SURELY knew the toast was burnt when he/she put the burnt side down and pretended nothing had happened...how could they get away with that kind of food?<br/><br/>My husband ordered a burchetta with bacon and the bacon was way overdone...at least his toast was normal.<br/><br/>The food was one thing, their service was another, the waiter that served us was fine. But the waitress was a different story. She looked very mad to all her customers,no emotion and no smile of course..she spoke Italian to us all the time which was no biggie. But when she took a drink out,she looked so lost and we asked her what it was,she did not say anything,it was obsurd. We told her that it did not look like what we ordered, she walked away and said nothing.<br/><br/>The only time she spoke to us in English was when she handed me my coffee, she quickly dropped the coffee and turned her head away when she said 'for you', it looked like she had nothing to do with us. Even the guy at the counter did not care at all when he talked on the phone and processed my eftpos...(multitasking huh?) They just made us feel like we were not supposed to be there.<br/><br/>We have been to countless cafes and restaurants and Cafe Latte was certainly one of the worst and a complete rip-off!

This place has gone downhill both in service and food.

Free Dessert!. We came here for just dessert one evening. The dessert was absolutely delicious. I forgot what we had, but I can honestly say that it was beyond anything I've ever had in a dessert before. Then when we came to pay the bill, the waitress told us that it's free. Apparently the owner took care of the bill. I have a feeling that some of the owners other friends were meant to come in for dessert and the staff confused us with them, but who cares. We got beyond amazing dessert, plus dessert wine, for free!<br/>But seriously, go there for the dessert, even if you have to pay for it, it's worth it a million times over!

Only got takeaway coffee here...but the mocha had no hint of chocolate and a sign that said takeaway was $3ea was charged at $3.80... So not great first impression to eat there.

Covering The Bases. After a day shopping with the kids my wife and I found ourselves a lovely table at this Melbourne institution. We were greeted with smiles and Italian gestures and promptly seated at the table near the window. The waiter was attentive and knowledgeable on italian specials and wines. I loved the renovations they did several months ago, absolutely stunning and simple.<br/><br/>Our pastas were excellent and our kids especially enjoyed the spaghetti with meatballs on the special menu. <br/><br/>I've been to Italy many times and let me tell you the food at Cafe Latte was as authentic as anywhere over there.<br/><br/>The prices were affordable and the quality was right on the money (pardon the pun!)<br/><br/>We will definitely be back.

Still waiting. Arrived for breakfast with a friend. We were immediately offered coffee which was good, however while waiting for our coffees we had to ask for menus (the place was not busy). After ordering and waiting for half an hour and still no sign of our eggs benedict and omelette I went up and enquired as to their whereabouts, and was told by the waiter that he had forgotten about our orders. Needless to say we walked out with empty stomachs. Never again.

Caffe Latte - steady, without a zing!. I dined hear last night with two other friends. This restaurant is right in the heart of a good Melbourne restaurant area. The establishment is not large by any means, but certainly is comfortable and a tolerable noise level.<br/><br/>The wine list is satisfactory and will please most palates.<br/><br/>Overall impression was that the service was a little slow and the service staff needed to be followed up to ensure what was requested was delivered in a timely fashion.<br/><br/>I enjoyed mussels for an entree, and they were enjoyable. Sadly, the mussel meat in several instances was small, to say the least. Nevertheless, this is not to detract from the overall enjoyment of the dish.<br/><br/>I followed this up with a veal main course. Very enjoyable, was finished with an green olive-based sauce which turned it into a delicious meal. We accompany their minds with roast potatoes with a sprinkling of rosemary. In my particular case, these complemented my veal perfectly. My two companions enjoyed the spaghetti and meatballs. And did enjoy them.<br/><br/>The deserts were very good indeed, I chose a chocolate pudding which was cooked perfectly and was accompanied by a ginger-based chocolate ice cream. Nothing to complain about there.<br/><br/>Prices charged were pretty much in line with a reasonably good restaurant today. They certainly weren't cheap and at $120 per head, including a very nice bottle of Shiraz, we went away quite happy.<br/><br/>Overall impression was very favourable, only criticism being the wait staff needing an occasional reminder.<br/><br/>Very suitable for business lunches and dinners and also for couples wishing some nice food.<br/><br/>Most importantly, I certainly will return there.

Liking but not liking it by much. Soup was bland. Seafood platter too small. Pasta and dessert good. Not sure about ginger spiced ice cream though. I wonder if the waiters are all forced to speak in Italian?

I ate here 2 weeks ago with my mother, the service was superb, the coffee great and my mothers pasta excellent, however my rump steak was the worst cut of meat I have ever attempted to eat in my life, chewy, riddled with gristle and of poor flavor, it severely dampened my experience.

I've eaten here on a couple of occasions, the coffee is pretty good, however if you've got a big appetite you may leave here hungry! I ordered an entree for lunch thinking it would be adequate, I was wrong :(

Call that fruit salad?. One chopped up granny smith, one chopped up strawberry and some unripe rockmelon. A fruit salad fail for Cafe Latte. For $11.50 I expected something with some variety and flavour. Not an impressive first visit.

Whilst we have eaten before and enjoyed the classy Italian food, but this week they really dropped the ball. Twice cooked duck was not sufficiently cooked even once - either that or the ducks were just plain tough. Not isolated because three people in our party all had the same problem with the duck.

Over priced. The staff and coffee are great. The food is ok but way over priced and small portions

Special dishes. Seafood risotto without seafood? Unusual. Apologies offered but still charged. Not good value.

Pleasantly surprised. This was not what I expected at all. Beautiful setting, yummy menu, well versed waitstaff. All good.
