Review Salon De Sushi - Melbourne

Belinda Caldwell
Expensive, but worth it. The sushi are works of art and the servings large. Exploring the menu is so much fun and the flavours incredible. They do amazing little twists in their sushi, who knew kiwi fruit on sushi could possibly work so well?! The service was absolutely lovely and the kitchen clearly bustling with delivery orders. Also ordered their food on Uber Eats for a work day treat and it was just as divine. Their tasting boxes are a flavour adventure. Love this place!

Salon de Sushi is one of the few sushi restaurants in Melbourne that do delivery, and in my opinion they are the best in this category. Their packaging are very stylish and they protect the sushi very well. Every time I opened a sushi box from Salon de Sushi, the content maintained a perfect presentation. Credit should also be given to the delivery staff, who are always friendly and punctual. There are surely better sushi out there in Melbourne, but I'm fairly certain that none of them provide delivery service. And for the price they charge, the quality of sushi is great.

Very authentic and delicious teriyaki chicken don. A bit pricey but definitely worth the value. I also had their Chicken Katsu Don which was very good.

Very funky Japanese vibe. Food is fantastic and service is pretty cool. You can eat in, take away and they also delivery within a radius. The salmon and tuna poke bowl is a must... delicious! (And well priced)

Very sad they are closing down... Had many great meal with Salon de Sushi. Thank you very much for the great efforts and wonderful experience. Will miss you very much.

Very cozy place, food was terrific, everything was fresh, a good number of selection in the menu, although slightly pricey, but its with the money. The waiter did a good job in serving as well. Over all, a great experience to dine in this restaurant

I enjoyed my Bento - generous portions and very tasty. Nice little place, quiet but comfortable. Definitely a step up from the numerous take away places in the area.

It was a beautiful, comfortable little place with a very peaceful atmosphere. The food was authentic and delicious. The staff were very helpful, patient and absolutely lovely. Definitely coming back. Highly recommend

One of the go-to cheap and cheerful sushi joints in the city. A good range of ‘new’ style nigiri which you will not find in more run of the mill take-away places. Anything with the dill-infused salmon is worth trying.

We absolutely love this special place. The sushi is fresh and delicious. Beautiful attention to detail with presentation. We were so impressed with the happy and friendly service.

The poke ball is amazing and good serving, the ambiance is pretty nice and the service was very accomodating. However the sushi is just average.

No. Of Visit: 2
Overall Rating: 3.6 - 3.9

I would come here if I want to satisfy my causal Jap food craves: this place has miso, sushi plate, poke bowl, donburi, Udon and all others. Taste would rate 3.8/5. Pricing value would be 4/5.

I also love that they are so Veggie / Vegan friendly. You can request any dish to be made in your way.

The establishment is those that would appeal to my little excitement - they display their huge range of wine / sake / Choya / Jap cocktail in a self-serve fridge - Just grab the ones you haven't tried!!

I’ve been a here a couple of times - It has been bang on average for the most part but a little over priced.
Today was below average: beef tataki was too thick, it had weird tasting red things on it which had a foul taste when chewed, okonomiyaki was decent but a little too saucy, ramen tasted like bland instant noodles and the sushi was distinctly too small for $9.40 with piece of smoked salmon which was different and not in a good way. The wasabi was hard and didn’t blend well with soy sauce as it had probably been sitting there for too long.
Photos were taken after we ate as we were starving but we left totally unsatisfied for $50.
Don't order from here if you want to get what you paid for. Twice I've been given my delivery missing an expensive inclusion. Not worth the annoyance, week it takes to try to refund your money for food you didn't recieve. Don't bother

A good place for takeaway. Reasonable price with decent amount of quality food. It would be 5 stars if the hot food selection can be expanded.

A hidden gem! We found salon de sushi while walking on clarendon on a cold winter evening. Having escaped a really loud live band place we chose this empty sushi place for dinner. Staff was very polite and quite happy to see us. It was around closing time but they were happy to let us in. Thanks!! We ordered the below-

Japanese croquette bento with chickpea salad - Amazing combination of flavours. The rice was well cooked, croquette non oily and the teriyaki sauce not too sweet. Loved the fresh chickpea salad flavours! Quite filling meal for one.

Minty chicken rice paper sushi - everything was fine except the really long red pepper pieces which were a challenge to eat! Chicken was well cooked but this would be my least favourite from the dinner that day.

Salmon sushi platter - LOVED it! Can't fault it at all. A perfect dish. Period.

Brown rice tea - I have never had this before so was quite impressed by how subtle the rice flavour is. You know it tastes like that but doesn't overpower your taste buds. At $4 a pot it was a good option to choose instead of just having water.

Damages were around $40 and we left full and satisfied. Definitely come back for more!

Best poké bowls ever!! And very generous portions of food for a good price. Fresh sushi & thick pieces of sashimi as well.
Great ambience for a little place, staff are generally friendly in the evenings however, went there during the day once and staff who I've never seen were working there and quite rude.
A quiet Sunday night, and we found ourselves outside Salon De Sushi. It is not French/Japanese fusion food as the name may suggest. Inside, the restaurant was quiet and the serving staff helpful. We got some advice about specials and how much to order. For me, the menu was a little confusing. It lacked the guidance for an occasional Japanese food diner. Updating the menu would help navigate the offering.

We ordered entre-sized soup, sushi, pork/rice and the sushi special. The food arrived promptly. The servings were a good size, as was the taste. If we had ordered a full-sized soup and one dish, then it would have been enough for a meal.

Our chopsticks were the Chinese style (with squared-off ends), rather than the traditional Japanese design with tapered tips.

Complementing the food, we had warm sake. I'm not sure how it was heated (I guess in the microwave). It was hotter than I had experienced in the past, with the first pour being nearly too hot to drink.

I don't know if I will rush back, but I hope this feedback will help the owners make some changes to improve the overall experience.

Had the poke chirashi bowl here many times and it’s the BEST poke bowl in Melbourne, by far above the rest. So fresh and authentic! And the melon cream mochi...best way to refreshen the palate at the end of the meal.

4/5 : service
4/5 : price
4/5 : food

I order the udon, pork gyoza and chicken onigiri. The udon are great 👍🏻. The gyoza is probably one of the best, i think they deep fried the gyoza bcs its really crispy which how i like it. The onigiri is disappointing, its my first time eating onigiri and didn't taste good. Overall, the place is at a pretty good spot, good food, affordable price.

Had the ‘Premium Aburi Complete’ which was an assortment of eight pieces of seared nigiri. The assortment consisted of beef tataki, eel, scallop, chicken, white fish and three salmon nigiri. Each piece of nigiri was paired with a different flavour topping and was seared nicely with a little bit of char. The rice from the nigiri took me by surprise as it tasted salty rather than the hint of the sweet and vinegary flavour you get from the traditional sushi rice. Not sure if they season the rice with salt for all of their sushi or just for the aburi nigiri assortment.

The topping and the rice held together nicely and barely any soy sauce was required as the rice already has some saltiness to it. The fish and scallop were soft and not overly seared; the chicken was tender with the skin left on to bring out more of the chicken flavour; the tataki beef was plain as there wasn’t much to it besides its natural beef flavour; and the eel tasted savoury from the seasoning and spice which is unique since eel is usually prepared with the sweet soy glaze/sauce.

Also had the ‘Snow ball mochi green tea ice cream’ from the menu which is a green tea ice cream wrapped in Japanese sticky rice. There was a decent amount of ice cream which was sweet and had a mild matcha flavour to it. The mochi skin was quite thin, soft and a little chewy.

Overall the meal was decent; the aburi nigiri was unique because the rice was salted hence giving them a more savoury profile. It was a different experience but I still prefer to eat nigiri with the traditional sweet and vinegary sushi rice. The ice cream mochi was good but nothing outstanding; nonetheless it was a nice small snack to have; cold and refreshing.
Melbourne To Mouth
Quick and easy sushi in South Melbourne with a very healthy twist. Definitely not the cheapest in the area but great quality. Lots of vegan and vego options for those with that penchant. Definitely as the staff about a few of the more interesting items!!

Hidden gems in south melbourne. If you are looking for fresh good sushi and fushion japanese food, this definately a place to die for. Its a hawainese influence japanese food. For healthy version, go get the chirazi, huge portion, taste perfect with the chili mayo dressing. My favourite is the risotto. This reminds me of what I ate on tokyo. We also tried the curry udon, the udon was my dad's favourite. We also tried the tartare beef sushi but it was not as good as the others. Last but not least, the greentea ice cream was really nice. Im not a fan of greentea but I could finish the whole thing by myself. They also do delivery around their area, and delivery only cost $5, if you order more tha $50, its free delivery. Better deal would be around lunch time when u get free miso soup for the sushi set.

Cute Japanese restaurant on Clarendon st.
Salon De Sushi delivered traditional Japanese cuisines with an open fridge of drinks and appetisers for you to buy.
Have had sushi here before, all dishes were fresh and tasty.
Lovely atmosphere, nice and cool on a hot day.
Take your lover, friends and family here for a Japanese night out.
Hello. Imnikki
First time ever at Salon de Sushi was to try their green tea soft serve. We had just finished breakfast and I wanted ice cream, and it's creamy texture and slightly bitter aftertaste did its trick to satisfy my craving. It was also then when we noticed the variety of sushi, sashimi and bento box meals and told ourself that we need to come back and try them out. Fast forward many many months later, we finally remembered what we said when we were browsing through Deliveroo for Japanese food.

Tucking into our meal, we felt that while it was a good meal, it seemed that everything just fell somewhat short from being great. The slices of tuna and salmon were indeed very fresh, but the rice fell apart when I tried picking them up. The pork katsu was wonderfully tender and crispy, but the curry sauce was lacking in depth and richness of flavour. The tuna onigiri needed more tuna filling for me to be able to distinguish it from a plain onigiri.

However, one thing did impressed us very much - the packaging. Minor things such as providing a tiny tray for the soya sauce, and the sturdy boxes made our dining experience much easier and more enjoyable.

The premium aburi set was very nice with good smokiness. The let down was the rice was dry (almost hard) which I ended up putting aside.
Chicken karaage and salon de crunch were tasty.
Didn't enjoy the ochazuke risotto though. The whole dish pretty much tasted like soy sauce.
Overall is good experience and will be back to try other dishes.

Salon de Sushi doesn't only do sushi!
The place looks amazing, beautiful interiors. Service was great, just what you expect of Japanese hospitality. We ordered a pot of premium green tea but besides the exquisite tea set, the tea was nothing spectacular. The teriyaki chicken risotto was fun but quite small. Also enjoyed the beef curry rice & the katsu Don but servings were also small. Surprisingly, the poke chirashi bowl was ginormous & you can customise the ingredients & dressing to your own liking. Loved it! To complete the experience, we shared the Salon de Complete 🍣

After only returning from Japan a week ago, we never thought we'd find sushi that comes even close to that of what we had in Japan. However, it appears we were wrong! Salon de sushi offers an extremely extensive and creative japanese menu including an amazing array of sushi (with interesting fillings sushi as seared cream cheese, mushroom and mango), curries, poke and other delicious Japanese dishes! We started with the tuna tartare which was flavour some and light. We also tried the mushroom rice paper rolls and a tuna and chicken inside out roll- all were tasty and we love the idea of multi grain rice! We finished with the Azuki bean and green tea parfait which was fantastic too. Salon de sushis pricing is extremely reasonable, they also deliver and offer takeaway (as well as a to go cabinet of food!). You really can't go wrong here!

I came here on a salmon aburi quest and it did not disappoint. Granted I haven't found many places that do salmon aburi (and therefore haven't eaten many) but this one was melt-in-your-mouth, lightly-charred goodness and probably very close to being the standard of objective yumminess. Also had the salmon chirashi and the tempura - can recommend both. Staff are very friendly.

Lovely meal. Food was really good. Sashimi was fresh and that miso soup and kimchi was amazing! The tempura was also really light and crispy. All the combinations of a fantastic dining experience.

Only 'negative' is the food is quite pricey and portions a lil stingy. But I guess you gotta do what you need to do to survive in southbank

This place turned out to be very quaint and unique in its interior design. As the name suggests, the it was a very nicely put together salon with minimalistic decorations that gave it a simple yet tranquil feel.

The food was delicious and top class. We got a sashimi plate and an assorted sushi plate, which offered a healthy variety.

Special mentions to the sashimi which was beautifully cut and the maki roll which had a perfect blend of flavours.

Definitely would come again and the man behind the counter was very warm.
I feel like I need to warn people to be careful when ordering here.

Myself and a friend came here for lunch. I ordered the udon with beef curry, and was told they only had the salmon curry left. I said I'd just get the udon with salmon curry then. He confirmed my order, told me the price and I paid assuming I was paying for both myself and my friend who ordered before me as they don't do split bills. Turned out she had already paid.

I went back to the cashier, who said that I had ordered 2 meals, the udon curry and the rice curry. I told him at no point did I say I wanted a rice curry but he said that he confirmed the order and that I had paid him.

This went back and forth for a while. At this point the rice curry had already come out. I said as a compromise, I would have that instead as it's already prepared, but I wanted a refund for the udon.

He finally refunded me, but was not apologetic at all.

In regards to the rice with salmon Japanese curry, it wasn't bad. Probably a bit too expensive for what you get though.

Customer service on the other hand, doesn't seem to be a strong point.

As a local takeaway sushi outlet you don't go in with he highest expectations but when the price is so high you do expect more than the average sushi sushi. I've had some nice sushi from here but also some bad one- such as the chirashi takeaway. Fish was not fresh at all and the rice was very soggy- almost like a dry Chinese congee. Quite disappointed.

Stopped in for a poké bowl walking home from the market one afternoon. Was pretty tasty however I dislike the addition of 'random crispy fried things' which equated to plain fried flour/batter simply for 'texture'. No. Apart from that it was tasty and I would come in again to try the rest of the menu.
Wandering Ella
Sushi restaurant with a great selection of traditional and fusion sushis. Not being a fan of crowded places, I loved how the restaurant was quiet at around 7pm because I hear that it's more of a lunch place. And being a FAN of salmon nigiri, I was super excited to try the Salmon Nigiri Complete and I was not let down. Everything on that platter was fantastic. My friend ordered the poke-style bowl and he was surprised that for once "Holy schmoly, this thing is bigger than the photo on the menu!". The combination of the bowl was great too. A must-go if you're nearby!

Relatively cheap, nice food for the price nice environment. Friendly staff. I dont quite like eating japanese food outside, but this is different, i actually think this is worth the money

Love the miso soup, but it is a little pricey $3. Ordered Salon de crunch and it was good as amazing. Love how the taste blends together overall.
A+ for variety and uniqueness in menu. It's not your average run of the mill sushi. They have some interesting flavours. If you enjoy experimenting a bit this is a wonderful place to try.

Debby
Great selection of menu. U can choose either ordering dishes from counter or pick up sushi boxes from the shelves. Great variety of japanese beverages

Salon de Sushi might be a smallish restaurant but they can still cater to bigger groups as long as you confirm numbers on the day. I brought my meetup group here and there were 16 of us. Our area could sit 20 people - to do this we needed to book out the largest table and 3 tables that fit 4 people.

The staff had us come up to the counter to order which was very handy - it meant we didn't have to worry about trying to pay together at the end. Instead we got to all pay separately.

The food was of high quality. If ordering the premium seared aburi please be aware that takes a lot longer to make. It was very tasty though. $30 might be a bit too much for 8 pieces of aburi but I guess we are paying for premium. All other items on the menu are cheaper though - I just wanted to get this one!!
Good Food Good Mood
My was I delighted to discover Salon de Sushi now delivers. And boy do they deliver! Their sushi isn't cheap (what sushi ever is by the time you are actually full) but it's a bit fancier than your usual takeaway sushi roll joint, in fact service can be quite slow and it's because everything is done freshly. Get the dill salmon inside out roll (salmon with mango and avocado) for something deliciously different

This little place is a hidden gem in south Melbourne. Quick service (food often ready within 5-10min). Nice sushi and desserts. The mango sushi is very special and tasty.

Definitely a neighbourhood gem and one of the few places open in South Melbourne on a Sunday for dinner.

Also a place for takeaway.

Choose from their expansive menu of salads, pages and pages of sushi (taro sushi or mango sushi anyone), salads, rice dishes (bestest most popular Japanese curry with rice and secret ingredients - as described in the menu), and udon noodles.

My dinner companion wanted wagyu beef and was grossly disappointed.

Mostly fish dishes with some chicken.

We got the purple rice with eel. Beautifully served with four condiments including seaweed, chilli, wasabi, and some powdered spice. Eating requires a four step approach. First eat the fried teriyaki flavoured eel. Second, eat it with the condiments. Third, pour the broth over the rice and eat it all together. Fourth, yummy in your belly as you savour the experience.

We also got their "best Japanese udon curry with secret ingredients". It was a thick curry with teriyaki sauce, grilled salmon, massive mushrooms, broccoli and tomato. Quite filling.

We finished off with the Matcha ice cream which came with popped brown rice, blueberries, strawberries and corn flakes. Delicious and crunchy. The green tea mochi was interesting. Jelly like, flavorless and filled with red bean paste.

Great service with staff passionate about Japanese cuisine. Beautiful fit out. Good for groups.

This gem is easy to find in Clarendon Street. It is not a typical cheap and cheerful Sushi place. Instead you find classy decor with a healthy menu. Prices are mid range. All food had wonderful flavours. Don't be fooled by the small portions, they are actually quite filling. Staff were polite and very helpful. You have a fan, will go again!

We came here for a dinner on a warm Saturday night. There are so many items on the menu to choose from, I advise that you choose wisely as the bill adds up in the end with all the small plates. The food was okay... but the atmosphere and ambience was kind of dull. Seems more like a place to grab a takeaway lunch.

I've recently eaten at Salon de Sushi for dinner and lunch. It's a modern and cool sushi cafe catering to quick lunches and takeaway, or relaxed dine-ins. The service is friendly but slow during both dinner and lunch despite not being a full house both times. One lunch dish came out a lot later than the first, and at dinner time, it was impossible to get the staff's attention even when walking up to the counter (everyone was busy in the kitchen). The house classic "Salon de crunch" was really delicious and the crunchy elements were great. The tempura was also excellent with a light and crispy batter. The premium aburi complete set was delicious, perfectly seared and something I love but would rarely find elsewhere. Our least favourite was the only "creative" inside out roll we tried - the "Shirakanba". I know they're meant to be quite fusion and different, but the tempura pineapple, seared cream cheese, tuna, paprika, etc. elements did not mesh well for me. The ice mochi desserts were inconsistent because one was fine but the other mochi was grainy and hard. For a recent lunch visit, we tried the chirashi poke bowl and the (traditional) white fish tempura box set. The poke bowl had a great range of wonderful elements and it was really generous. However I think everything including the rice was seasoned, and by the end it was way too salty for me. The white fish tempura set was fairly standard, although the tempura was soggy unlike the dinner visit. I expect putting the box together had taken a bit of time which made the tempura soggy. Overall it seems that sushi is the way to go here (for me personally, the less fusion and creative kind). Everything was fresh and well prepared. The sushi is made by machines but the quality is muuuch better than franchise sushi chains, while the price point is a bit lower than authentic sushi restaurants. So it's a great in between!

Randomly stumbled into the shop for lunch and totally amazed by their unique style! Healthy and yummy Japanese food. Lots of choices on the menu, and great selection of drinks in the shop!! We had the unagi rice, poke rice, sushi, matcha parfait and melon mochi! Felt so so so good after eating the food. Definitely coming back!!

The closest you can get to authentic Japanese sushi and sashimi in Melbourne. Your dish will be made to order, made with skill, and made from the freshest ingredients available here. While a far cry from the likes of Endo Sushi in Osaka, this is truly the closest I've come to the real thing down under.
Prophetmars666
Pretty amazing sushi with a modern touch given . Their bento box was served in a cool plate which was alright not the best but I enjoyed it. I would definitely be back to try more sushi thoughz

Mediocre at best. I have been hear a few times in hopes that perhaps my experiences where just by chance, but alas. The sushi was alright but it wasn't good enough to make up for the complete absence of, and incredibly slow service. Every time I've visited for lunch there has been no one to serve us. And once when I met my partner here during his lunch break he actually had to leave before they finished serving us. To top it all off it is far too expensive for the quality of food it's providing. All round MEH experience!

I checked out Salon De Sushi on Clarendon Street this week, as part of my ever continuing conquest of all lunch options near work. The setup is a bit different from the norm with the sushi options boxed up ready to go in shelves and a number of other choices in udon, ramen, salads and drinks. The encouraged combo for $17.90 is one sushi box, one salad and a miso soup which isn’t bad, although there’s plenty of options including for sit down and cooked to order as well. Slightly overwhelming when it comes to options.

I’ve done both takeaway & dine in here and love the unusual selection they have here. The food is fresh and delicious. There’s also a selection of refreshing drinks. A great place for a quick lunch break or ordering takeout for the whole office. Lunchsouth mlbourneSushiTakeaway. Leave a Reply Cancel reply

This place is unique. The design is similar to a cafeteria and the art work inside looks spectacular. The food here is great. I ordered the sashimi pack and it was deffinately worth it. The sushi were fresh and delicious. If you are looking for a good sushi place. You must try here. It is worth every penny.

Unlike other sushi places, Salon de sushi offers made to order, fresh and with interesting ingredients (prosciutto sushi was really tasty and different and the more traditional types very well executed). The staff is friendly and the salon has a funky decor.
Order a delivery last week. Fresh, delicious and well within the time specified for delivery. A little on the expensive side but still a very enjoyable meal.

Food came out relatively quick. There were plenty of vegetarian options so I was pretty stoked about that. A must try sushi place for those of you wanting delicious vegetarian sushi rolls :p

Love the atmosphere. Service staff are really friendly. Best time to dine will be for dinner. The food tastes amazing~!!! The seared salmon belly is to die for. The tempura is light and fluffy. With a bit of matcha salt, brings it up to another level~! Yummy, Nom Nom Nom~!!! 😍😍😍

Like other reviewers, i love the decor of this place and they have few cabinets for grab-and-go items and of course you have to pay before you go. Serving variety of Japanese food ranging from sushi to udon and rice dishes. This place is never enough in just one visit..i have planned my second visit in near future. Many items to try and it is a vegetarian friendly place too

Nice little restaurant but probably more suited for takeaway. I had dinner here on Saturday and the shop was almost completely empty but food still took ages to arrive. Food was good value and good taste though.

Sushi delivered – my life is complete! Ok it is a bit of a lazy move to get Salon de Sushi delivered when we could walk there in five minutes but it’s dark, cold and I am in joggy pants! Bring me the sushi!! The menu is crazy good with sushi, miso, bento, nagiri, chirashi, edaname, tataki and so much sushi you can have it all!
Roy
Great design and such a nice environment to eat at!!Innovative but authentic japanese food and I must say it's the best sushi I have ever had! The japanese risotto is a must to try! The japanese staff are amazingly friendly and polite. Highly recommended this place! A solid 5/5 from me, price range is $40-60 for two people

This is my local sushi place. Clean and such friendly staff. I love th he wide selection of sushi as well as the selection of beverages. Highly recommend this place 👌🏾
Big Eyes For A Big Tummy
Different and interesting concept although when we entered we were a little confused. We had the intention of dining there but as we weren't approached by any staff, we weren't sure if we were to sit down or to help ourselves with the ready made pretty packages in the fridge then sit down and eat. We just went sheep and followed suit with what another person was doing and grabbed ourselves a tray to work out what we wanted to eat, until I found staff and asked how it worked. So the fridge was for takeaway and we were to order from the table... There were only two things we ordered we really enjoyed. The seaweed salad was great as it used a different type of seaweed to what most express sushi bars used (thicker and more crunch to it) and had edamame in it which gave it great texture. The other dish we enjoyed was the udon - enjoyed the texture and the light homemade broth, though a bit small...would be happy to pay a little more for a good main size. They have a good variety of drinks. Had my first ever drink from the Strange Love range - Blood Orange & Chilli - was so awesome will be on the lookout for it!! The sushi was not great - salmon was good but the rice really made it not good, tad soggy but what put us off was the flavour of the rice, too much vinegar with an empowering saltiness to it like salt was mistakenly used instead of sugar??? Service was friendly but wouldn't go out of my way to come here again.
Nogha
The presentation of the food is amazing, staff also. But the food is not to much. You think that the sushi will be at least decent, but it is very terrible. First, the raw fish doesn't taste fresh at all. Second, the sushi has too many flavours it taste annoying rather than innovative. I an not saying they add MSG to sushi, but it taste like it.
Nory
Came here so many times ! Every time make me felt happy . Sushi fresh and pretty tasty !
However the udon is so small and lack of flavor
Not bad

Never disappointed. Always clean and fresh. Price is fair, as it is not your cheap quality sushi. They do delivery for a fair price too. Recommended

Very fresh and nice sushi! I bought one sushi box for lunch and got one miso soup for free! Their miso is quite different than others. The sushi box is cute! Love! Love!

These guys are like the samurai gods of sushi. I've been meaning to review them for a while because they I've been so impressed by what they do. Yeah they do Japanese, but their passion for detail makes it so much more amazing than what I'm used to. I have to admit, usually I can take my sushi or leave it - but the passion for craft lifts Salon de Sushi to another level. They say we eat with our eyes, so this food just has to taste amazing.

My favorite sushi store in Melbourne! The owner and staffs are really really nice! Selection of Their sushi roll is quite extensive! You can't get wrong with anyone you pick! Green tea ice cream dessert is also a must!

We decided to eat at this restaurant for dinner after walking down the street and finding this the most appealing. The interior is small but very neat, orderly and simple in design. The staff were very friendly and welcoming as we stepped inside.

There is an option to choose your meal from the fridge section but after finding none of them enticing for my appetite at that time, we decided to order straight from the menu. We ordered the Salmon Complete as well as the Roll De Salon De Sushi.

For anyone who loves salmon, I would highly recommend the Salmon Complete. The salmon pieces were pretty good in terms of sizing and the seared salmon was my personal favourite. Personally, I know it's good sushi when 1. the seafood is fresh and 2. the rice sticks really well and doesn't fall apart.

The Roll De Salon De Sushi was definitely unique to the restaurant and I found I quite enjoyed it. The addition of cheese and mango, something that is usually not found in sushi, was rather interesting but made for a good sushi filling with the other ingredients.

With those two dishes, my partner and I were quite content, particularly as we weren't hungry to start off with. I would probably recommend starting off with two dishes to share (if there are two of you) and weighing up whether a third dish needs to be ordered - The wait isn't long for the food to be served.

Overall, I can see this place as a lunchtime favourite for those working in that area because it's nice, fresh and unique sushi. Whilst it may be a bit more expensive than the usual Suji Sushi franchises, you are definitely getting better sushi.
Tim
Great sushi!
Had the Salon de complete, very fresh, great flavours and looks like a lot of work went into these. Miso soup was perfect and the carrot salad amazing! Edamame beans were below par.
A little on the pricey side compared to others, but quality is there.
Def be back!
A very different spin on a traditional Japanese cuisine. Many great variants to standard sushi dishes that make them standout. Can't beat prawn nigiri and beef tataki.

Major downside... They never give you a full glass of water! Continually pestering the waiter to fill your glass up becomes tiresome. It's also annoying that it's easier to buy a water from Coles (100m away) when on average my meal is $40

Salon de Sushi delivered two beautifully packaged and presented boxes of wholesome goodness to me one evening, and I've been raving about them ever since. Firstly, getting sushi delivered is hard enough. To get good sushi, delivered on time, with thoughtful packaging and presentation, is just simply divine.

Had the salmon complete box and the hosumaki Tuna.

Salmon nigiri was great, salmon was good quality and fresh, rice was good in texture and consistency as it doesn't breakoff, flavour of the rice seems to be missing the classic slight vinegary touch to it. Overall good quality!

Hosumaki Tuna, not bad, in terms of texture and flavours, sushi rice seems to yet again be missing the vinegar.

Overall not bad!

Kills it. Great for a quick bite, solid delivery options. Again, really quick on the delivery front which is rare I feel like. Real nice staff, too.

Great place for lunch. The lunch special is healthy and filling, A big box of sushi, plus salad, plus miso soup for $17.90. There is a self serve area to choose your lunch boxes/sides/dessert/drinks for quick meal, or can order from the menu.

Aside from the fact that they make deliveries, their sushi is not that great. The sushi that I had have overcooked, mushy rice. The fillings are not exciting, and the nori didn't have the needed crunch. The price is not the cheapest as well, which makes it below the average sushi you can have for the same range of price.

Fast delivery! Probably the only Japanese food where they can deliver the food.

Foods: 3/5
Service: 2.5/5 (based on UX from ordering until delivered)

THEY DELIVER SUSHI?!?

The answer to that is OMFG - yes.

Speedy service, tasty food, would highly recommend and will definitely return for more (both in store and city-wide delivery).

To say Salon de Sushi is expensive is to compare it to sub par express sushi. This is another level, using high quality, fresh ingredients. And it isn't even that expensive. 2 people dined for just $50 and were full too! Sarah Melnyk

Fresh ingredients and well put together sushi makes this place worth the expense. One of our favourite takeaways and just experienced in store goodness too. You certainly pay for what you get. You walk away from this food feeling like you've done your body a favour.

Love the delivery service. It always arrives on time and comes in the most gorgeous boxes. I would love to see them sell a few more traditional sushi options though. Lots of fusion rolls on the menu. Some better than others. Really enjoyed the shiitake mushroom roll but wasn't too keen on the strong cilantro taste in the green veg roll. Carrot salad was a little blah and not Japanese at all. Overall a place I'll definitely go back to.

An interesting concept where you choose your meal from the fridge. Good environment and service was ok, as it is more like a take away store than a restaurant. However food is not as fresh as I would like.

Wow genuinely surprised at this sushi salon. We wanted take away so we could go Albert Park for a picnic. Sushi was delicious, we ordered a salmon platter & a mixed vegetarian, beef tataki, edamame, miso soup, green tea total $43. Very generous lunch for 2 people. Lovely presentation in store and we were delighted when picnicking thoughtful staff had included everything we could need. Really lovely.

Bad sushi, there was a bone on their salmon nigiri, which I ALMOST SWALLOWED IT! I know i'm fat and will eat everything when it comes out with a sushi. But please be careful next time you order for the next customer. Miso is good. Overall is OK...

Salon de Sushi is a modern Japanese restaurant located in South Melbourne which also provides home delivery services. I stumbled upon this restaurant by chance when I was looking at various restaurants that offer food delivery on Eatnow . The first thing that came to my mind about sushi delivery was the freshness of the sushi as they contain raw fish. Are they able to maintain the freshness of the sushi during the delivery? I suppose if they are professional enough, they should know how to handle it. So I gave it a try. I was delighted when I first received the food. Look at the packaging! It reminds me of those beautiful bento boxes one could get in Japan. Japan has the most advanced packaging culture thanks to their demanding consumers who are obsessed with the presentation of the food. Why can't we learn f

Salon De Sushi is quite expensive and at first seems to be over priced, but the quality of the ingredients really blows you away. Plus the presentation is perfect. They also have some interesting options on the menu that aren’t as traditional, as well as the traditional ones. I loved the mini beetroot sushi! All together the meal was about 50 dollars delivered, so not cheap but a real treat...

Salon de Yummy. This place is incredibly priced for the sushi that is available and made fresh to order. This is not the run of the mill - stop and dash Japanese sushi roll place. It's somewhere between that and a 'sit down, I'm out for a good meal and night' kind of place.
There's also a cold bar of ready made platters, but what is also AHmazing about this place, is it does DELIVERY all day (in the South Melbourne area). The staff are all lovely and the packaging and presentation of the food is super cute. The place is not big in size, but there are plenty of tables for dining inside.

Best 'traditional' sushi in town! Miso is great and the food is fresh. It's not your average sushi roll take out its a dinning experience.

Is this a drug den?! Overpr.... Is this a drug den?!
Overpriced.
Always empty.
How are they still open?

New favourite.. I discovered this place only recently, and was fairly disappointed with my foodie self for not finding it sooner. Salon de Sushi is easily my new favourite sushi takeaway in the inner Southern suburbs. It may seem at first glance to be overpriced (a large one-person box costs upwards of $15), but I do feel that you get what you pay for: beautiful quality sushi, great condiments and way more soy sauce than sushi shops normally give. Personal favourites of mine include the beetroot tempura roll (sweet yet subtle, with only a lovely thin layer of batter), Greengreen inside-out roll (asparagus, cucumber and edamame with rice, wrapped in a layer of sweet avocado), and the great array of vegetarian nigiri, including asparagus, enoki or thick Japanese omelette.
The store itself is has funky décor and an easy, buffet-type set-up for takeaway, whereby one selects sushi, entrées, condiments and drinks from a wall of cabinets. Yet the best value comes, in my view, from delivery; it's such a novel idea to have fresh sushi delivered to your door.

Salon de Complete. I liked the beetroot, and the prosciutto sashimi.

Interesting concept and great sushi. I would definitely go back if i feel like fresh sushi and salads in future. Great place and good options.

Disappointing overall. The website, reviews and slick presentation made it something worthwhile. Having ordered, I felt thoroughly let down by SDS. We asked for a delivered order by 7pm this evening - great, they were on time.

Not so great - missing some of our food after the driver reassured us everything was included. Something that can easily be rectified if you can call them, right? You'd think so. Unfortunately, you can't get a hold of them given the calls go straight to voicemail. They don't even get a chance to fix it, which is disappointing.

Food - nothing more special than your regular sushi place, but definitely more expensive with smaller portions.

Unfortunate overall experience - perhaps a dine-in may lead to better results, but I'd be hard pressed to spend my own cash on it.

Rude Operators. Its 7.10 am on Sunday 28 Sept 2914 and once again the alarm system is screeching out and has been for 15 minutes.

This happens 2-3 times every week and the noise not only wakes up those living nearby but also destroys the business for every cafe in the area as the noise is intolerable.

The owners of this business need to get their act togaether and fix their security system.

In the interim, black ban this business and its inconsiderate owners!!!

Good sushi, good quality. I like it! And the bix is really nice! Also the guy was really kind... I probabably made a mistake with the number of the address and he called me amd was so nice! The only thing maybe is the price.. A little bit expensive.. With this price and can go out for dinner and eat in a restaurant and be served!

Don't count on ANY customer loyalty rewards. Employees & food is good (pricey) but here's the other side:

Have been a good long-term loyal customer for a while, since May but recently got put off by the lack of ANY customer loyalty rewards. So far have spent close to $500 there & now will be reconsidering going there. Spoke with one of the owners quite a few times & just asked for an extra soya sauce from a $50+ order (4 separate dishes) & still wanted to charge me an extra 50c! Seriously? Write off 1% or write off a long-term loyal customer?

These days customers are looking for value & rewards, if it's not there, there's plenty of competition out there who would be more than happy to take the business.

A bit too trendy for us.... Well the sushi is actually pretty good but for what we paid ($15.90 for a vego selection take away) the rolls are very small and you get it in a trendy box. Well that is fine if it is a gift but who gives sushi as a gift? Also the box isn't in any way bento style so the rolls tend to get chucked around if you are travelling anywhere. I would rather pay less for more prosiac presentation. Sushi Chef just down the road while it may not quite have the variety or hip status is better value.

This is our favourite place for authentic Japanese sushi! Their sushi is always fresh, tasty and beautifully presented. The staffs and delivery guys are friendly and polite!

A Must Visit. Everyone should try Salon de Sushi - if only for the adorable packaging and presentation!! A touch expensive, but there are some interesting combinations I have never tried before, for instance, prosciutto and beetroot sushi! Only set back was the tea - $2.50 for a very small cup, no teapot like other places. But overall a really beautiful setting for a casual dining experience.

Fantastic. Great friendly service and food is top shelf. Well worth the money

Free delivery & top sushi!. I am recently a new parent and tried this place because they deliver. The food came beautifully packaged and was the best take away sushi I've had.
Stan
Really delicious sashimi/sushi, probably a touch more expensive than id like but the quality does make up for it

My authentic Japanese experience A++. After hearing the hype locally, i was very impressed with the quality and it did exceed with me a great reputation 'Salon de Sushi' has as boutique quality. I'd defenitely recommend this sushi shop and worth a try..

Salon de sushi offers fresh, creative, delicious sushi. They have good service and the food is consistently good also. It's reasonably priced (considering the quality of the food) and a great alternative to Fast food take away.
