Review China Bar - Melbourne

Midori Yukou Eugenio
Rude staff. Upon entering, a lady sitting whom I thought was a customer asked me "how many people?" But she was sitting comfortably and pointed out where we would be seated. Also, the staff serving us were also eating on the side every time she finished serving. No issues but I don't think it's proper. The food was okay. Not much to say about it. It's not the best but it wasn't that bad. I would only recommend the bbq pork bun. The dim sum wasn't good as the rice paper had melted on its side. See pictures below. We wished we would have listened to the reviews.

Food was ok. Service is average. Affordable price and quick service. Rice was a bit hard and fried dumplings are soggy. We went in because the place we wanted to go had a long line to get in and we were hungry.
Jay Vella
Quite disappointed have eaten here before and the food has been great. The noodle soup was not as great as usual the noodles tasted old and dry and the pork was tough and bearly any at all.

Unfortunately, I ordered a chicken and mushroom fried rice and it was way overcooked. One of my friend ask for the same one and it was okay. I told one of the waiters and they did not say anything about it. He spoke to the manager but the manager never came and speak to me about it. One of the waitresses was a bit too much rude. Would have loved for a better service in this Christmas season. Personally, this was my first and last time in China Bar Russel St.

Excellent place, food delicious and quick service thanks guys!!

China bar offers an affordable Chinese feast at all hours, the service was super speedy, we only waited 10 minutes at most for 3 dishes, the food was hot, nourishing and the portions sizes are large for the cost conscious among us. Delivery is also available, for those not close to there many locations or looking for a delivered snack!

Used to be better. Recently forgot hainanese sauce with takeaway (its a key ingredient to the dish) Ordered again and cold dumplings. I waited to pick up and was at home within 5min. Half were warmish and the other half felt like they were just out of the fridge. Guessing they cooked from frozen or the water wasn't boiling. So disappointing

They kept declining our calls for no reason while we were trying to order

I have been going to this place for so long up until now. it was a group of 5 of us wanting a seat the lady gave us a table for 4 and told us to squash in when it was impossible as there were people sitting beside us. HOWEVER next to us was a big table that would seat close to 6-7 people but she said no you cannot have that its our table so we just picked up and left.
the following week me and my partner went late at night and whilst we got our food and were eating everyone started screaming and the waitresses and waiters grabbed plastic containers and started catching what i thought was a spider. he then threw the container in the bin next to me and to my horror it was a gigantic cockroach!!! i felt sick to the stomach! 3 mins later then caught another 2 more and thats when i stopped eating my food paid and left!! this place needs a HEALTH INSPECTOR to go there ASAP thats not right.

Perfect for a quick snack. Enjoyed the Duck and rice with a Bao. Service is efficient. Place is clean Happy with the prices and would come again.

This was one of the go to places for late night feeds, we decided to come here during lunch to see how good the food stood up in my unintoxicated state. The first thing you'll see is the various roast meats in the window, so naturally that's what we all ordered and craved.

I got a combination of roast duck and pork over dry noodles, as I got dry noodles it came with your basic broth. The noodles themselves were well seasoned, the meat on both the duck and pork were quite lean and thus didn't particularly excite me. The roast pork's crackling was paper thin and had very little crunch factor. Chilli oil on the table wasn't bad and was its saving grace.

Very average roast meats, when you're looking for a feed late at night this might satisfy your cravings.

Me and my friends just ate last night and this is the first time I came here as my friend suggestion. Worse than I expect. The food is normal. Unfriendly staff at all!

China Bar - CBD⁣
Pork & Wanton Noodle Soup⁣
It’s 5:30AM on a Sunday morning after a long night of drinking so where do you head? Shinjuku, nope 30 minute line and you don’t want to see the sunrise. Dragon Hot Pot, ahhh nope 35 minute line and it’s started raining - well I need some broth so where else to head but China Bar - a late night diner that has truly stood the rest of time. With a menu of biblical lengths there are plenty of options to cast your drunken gaze over - the soup section glistens like a mirage, some brothy boys to wet that dried out mouth of yours. I wanted something subtle so I went for the wonton and pork option, the soup was delivered quickly - no easy feat considering the amount of patrons in the venue!⁣
The broth here lacked flavour - didn’t really taste like much at all unfortunately. Perhaps it was supposed to be chicken - not even a bit of chili oil could bring this soup back from a very bland spot. The wontons were okay but the pork was on the dry side. China Bar is what it is - a long running chinese eatery that serves up modest food for people with late night hunger! I’d personally go for a non soup dish next time I visit here. ⁣
⁣
🥢🥢🥢🥢🥢⁣
Broth Flavour: 🍜🍜.5⁣
Soup ingredients: 🍜🍜.5/5⁣
Service: 🍜🍜🍜/5⁣
Overall: 🍜🍜.5/5⁣
🥢🥢🥢🥢🥢
A
good customer service and it’s a good price for what you get. the noodles here never disappoint and neither does the meat here! great for a late night, semi-cheap eat!
Ross Lorenzo
Late night legend! Our go to for cheap quick and delicious Asian food! China bar caters for all your drunken munchies. Get the roasts, mee goreng, roti channai beef, satay chicken and omelette rice those are some of our favorites

Rude service but I kind of expected it? The food wasn't horrible, it's definitely something you grab to sober you up after a night out or you're simply starving and happen to be in the CBD. It is great that they're open virtually all night though.
Crabapples For Lunch
This is more of a 3.5 stars. China bar is one of those outlets with many branches, and generally has a reputation for serving decent food at decent prices, but the food isn't exceptional and the prices aren't particularly cheap. In that sense, this branch likewise meets the brief.

We had a minced pork and tofu on rice, a honey chicken on fried rice, and a fried rice on its own. All the dishes were fairly average. Honey chicken has a bit of a thick coating of flour, but most people who order such a dish would expect that. The quality is such that you'd get an average meal if you were into Chinese food at the time, but not somewhere you'd typically travel to on purpose.
JOELLE
Busy Chinese eatery on Russell St.

The place was quite okay size, but not the cleanest. The environment just felt bit fast paced and busy.

Their BBQs were pretty decent, the portion was good and flavor was there. Roast duck wasn't rubbery or hard, though roast pork could be crispier?

My sis had their fried rice was decent.

Had their xiao long bao as well but wasn't as good.

Update:

Took away some of their roast duck and pork and both were just decent, pork was bit too fatty. We also waited quite a while to get our food.

Nonetheless, an okay place for some quick non-fuss chinese food, especially when its open 24h.

( follow for more!✨)

xx,joelle

They wouldn't refund me for putting beef in a vegetarian meal.
I pointed it out to the waiter and he lied to me that it would be ginger. My boyfriend tried it and it clearly was beef.
I didn't want to make a deal out of it, it happens. Just wanted a refund and an apology. After demanding a refund in front of the entire restaurant and a long and quite loud conversation to the manager ( who did tell me that they never have a manager on shift and he isn't one) I only got parts of my bill back. No apology at all.

Not coming back and wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.
Good Food Good Mood
I found myself at China bar at 5.30am on a Sunday morning, yes this place is actually open until 7am catering to the hungry noodle seekers post a night out. I had a hokkien mee and the staff were most accomodating to remove the offending vegetables I wasn’t interested in (which were most). Not overly busy at this time of the morning as you can imagine so service was swift and efficient
Willtravelforfood17
My usual orders are their mee goreng and chicken rice. Their mee goreng tastes different to other places in that they add potatoes and also fresh tomatoes which gives it a sourish, savoury and slightly sweet flavour. The noodles are also fried well and sometimes have a slight char (wok hei). The chicken rice is flavourful with a generous portion of tender chicken.
Petit Cochon
I'm really angry at this restaurant. I ordered take away roast duck and they served a duck that was probably cooked the day before. So dry. I can never forgive them for serving me stale duck. Worst meal ever

Taste is pretty nice and fair with the price. For me, China bar is one of the cheapest place to have a food in Melbourne. I like to go here, even the staff is not that friendly. Maybe will be better if staff improve their service.
JKGasMan
Still good like I remember it. Came here looking for comfort food, so ordered a 2 roast (BBQ Pork and Roast Pork) with rice combo. Quick and satisfying experience. Seating slightly cramped and can be noisy (but they were playing some classic TVB series tunes to my enjoyment).
LC
This place is always open late and is a go to after a night out for drinks or dancing. Always packed after midnight. Can’t go past the roast duck on rice!
Zihan Chen
Always come around for night eats, but nowadays is not as good as it used to be, maybe because of the part of duck i was served wasnt tasty, still a good option in late nights
Lizzie Eats Melbourne
😱Lizzie’s first impression: I love how they open almost 24/7

🍩Lizzie enjoyed: the CKT flat noodles is always good here and so are their prawn dumpling har gaos

🍅Lizzie did not enjoy: its extremely greasy and I don’t think you leave this place feeling great about what you’ve just had but it’s damn delicious

🥇lizzie rates overall: a great place for a quick feed!

China bar offered a variety of Chinese food include entree, main and dessert. Most of their dishes is not friendly with gluten free. For vegetarian, they can order some menu, such as Fried rice with vegetables.
The price of the food is quite cheap. Ideal for one person would be around $20.
I ordered Hainanese Chicken rice. This dish come with side dish and soup. The rice is well cooked and very aromatic not too oily. The chicken serve with soy sauce so it is very juicy and also tender. The side sauce is good, I like the oil with garlic and the chili sauce. The sauce goes together with the chicken. It makes the chicken rice taste sharper. Overall, I love this dish and would recommend to others.
Hungry Teddy
I was craving for an authentic Chinese fried rice so I walked in the China bar after seeing a roast pork deliciously hanging around the display window. I've stormed through the roast pork fly rice and it was so damn good. Fresh ingredients, cooked nice & quick in the old dented hot wok. Great flavours. I give just the fried rice 4.5 bears. Anything else could be risky.
Sunny Days Melbourne
This China Bar has been around for decades. The interior has lost its shine but it continues to serve up solid Asian fare. As with all China Bars, their menu can appear a bit busy and haphazard with all those different items but there are some real gems hidden under all that.
These include the Indian mee goreng, nasi lemak and roast meats on rice.
Service is always rushed (but precise) so expect the experience to be one of those "in and out" places.
Some Bunee Loves Food
BBQ pork and crackling pork on dry noodles at China Bar. The intention was to get it from Hawker Chan but the line was too long so we opt for China bar. Crunchy crackling pork but the bbq pork was just OK, the sauce was too much on the noodles which made it really salty. .
Tina Le
Good customer service though the first impression was not as good as in the end. Great food with resonable price. Great roasted duck. Must try number 307b if this is your first time been here

Food : ⭐️⭐️ I ordered the pekin duck and the hainanese chicken. Tasted ok
Price : ⭐️⭐️ Expensive for the portion size. Just 2 tiny little pieces of cucumbe...
Service : ⭐️⭐️ Doing the job. Just ok
Ambience : ⭐️⭐️ Alright

I've had the laksa, char kuay teow, sar hot fun (noodles in egg gravy), beef hor fun, BBQ meats and Hainesse chicken rice. These are not the menu names, but the Cantonese names. This place is my go to for Malaysian food by delivery. It's consistently good with tasty food which is well prepared and cooked. Decent size serving. I thought the noodles in egg gravy was the weakest out of the dishes I have tried so far. I found the BBQ meats to be fatty. The Hainesse chicken rice was very good. Succulent pieces of boneless chicken served with ground ginger sauce. The way it's supposed to be done. The beef in the beef hor fun was reasonable quality. When I ask the restaurant for adjustments, like "less oil", I get less oil. Safe bet for a quick meal if you can't decide.
Dumba
Great after a night out. The congee is satisfying and the dumplings are good. Gets a bit crowded and noisy, the the service is fast. Nothing special, but not too bad.
Whitney Chan
Once in a while, I crave for some typical Cantonese food. And these moments are usually at a late night. So I started a combined search the other night (2am?), and this restaurant popped up. I took an Uber here 'cos they don't do Uber Eats delivery. Hmmm, the 干炒牛河 (Fried Flat Rice Noodles with Beef Slices) was quite authentic, and I was going to give 4+0.5 (with 0.5 goes to the sentimental element).
But just when I was trying to figure out the name of the dish and asked for the menu, one of the staff came up to tell me 'U can't take a pic of the menu' when I'm using my phone and looking at the menu... without saying sorry first, and not trying to be nice or even just polite when I told her that I'm literally writing a comment for this restaurant and I need the name. Well, now the 0.5 goes to the minus, and I would to make the minus doubled (4-0.5x2). They would really need to work on their service!! As much as I understand the culture, I still feel offended.
The pics are of the dishes I ordered today, but I don't feel comfortable writing any further comments now. Sorry.

Quick, cheap, oily, perfect after a big night out in town! Their crispy pork and BBQ were awesome. Rather than wait in line at those Ramen places, A quick bit here helped me sober up somewhat.
Kingshark
Wasn’t too impressed, the food was pretty average, the prices were not too expensive, or on the cheaper side. The staff were quiet and seemed as though they did not want to be there. Food came quickly. Overall, I may try again at another branch and try the other options as the menu is quite extensive.
Gee
Hey, it’s not fancy, but it is consistent, and it’s open until all hours! Hadn’t been here in a while but thoroughly enjoyed it. The dumplings were surprisingly good!
JunZzz
the roast duck is very nice here. the soup is full of MSG. disappointed with customer service. the price is not cheap. open until midnight is good point.
NoCapsicumPlease
The service was quite quick but the staff were too busy running, and not helpful. They forgot my change after we paid upfront. Also, service charges were applied for late night dining. The food was just so so

I've always preferred the Lonsdale St store over the Swanston St store because I feel that after being to both locations a few times, the Lonsdale one is more cleaner and less cramped. . From all my experiences at the China Bar restaurant stores, I don't have great opinions on it. The food is average at best but perfect after a night out as the store is open all day and night.
Bee The Foodee
Awesome food. And great prices. The dumplings are very soft and the hot and sour soup with seafood is deeeeleeeecious. They have a fun assortment of drinks..non alcoholic though. Easy to read menus and order off them. Always crowded with young people trying to find a value for money place. Recommend

$12.90 for a tasty bowl of beef brisket and wonton soup was exactly what I needed after work at 11pm on a Thursday night! The brisket melted apart in my mouth and the broth had heaps of flavour to it. Very happy 😄

The restaurant was full of people but the service was quick and efficient. Looking around, everyone seemed to be enjoying their food & all the dishes looked good. It's a typical no frills kind of Asian place, but with its late opening hours is great for that quick feed at a very reasonable price.
Elonie
Each table has a pad and pencil so you write down your own order. The food came quite quickly. The Claypot Yee Mee with Pork Spare Ribs was a bit salty with the black bean sauce.
MY NAmE IS Lee
We’ve been to China Bar many times. We typically order their special fried rice and combo roast meat with rice or noodle. These two meals usually have good flavour and are consistent.

This time the special fried rice was still pretty yummy with good flavour, and the combo roast meat (duck and roast pork) was good too, but I do not really understand why they gave us the burnt bits of the duck which was not very not nice. Also the serving sizes have become smaller but are still filling.

Over all we had pretty good meal again. Will be back again to grab a quick dinner when nearby.
Little Bit Of Everything
I like the food here good for late night dinners. Very disappointed with customer service. Rude and reckless staff. I still end up going sometimes as my friends want to but not a place I want to take someone if I am showing them Melbourne. Service is very quick but I would prefer better customer service.
Lisa Nguyen
Good place for a quick and affordable late night feed. Ordered the beef brisket and wonton noodle soup along with fried prawn beancurd and prawn dumplings. Food came out instantly and tasted average but was satisfying. Service isn't the best but efficient.
Darryl Quah
Came here for a really late supper, service wasn't exactly the best but they had a variety of options.

We came in a group so we ordered our own things. I got the siew yok & roasted duck combination with rice. The duck was good but the siew yok wasn't the best. They were generous with the portion but it should have been sliced more thinly.
I also ordered a prawn dumpling (har gao) which was quite dry but the prawns were succulent and it tasted alright.
Karmokar
China Bar has been able to tap into the late night eating in Melbourne very well. Its menu, service and food is for fast paced quick dish under a decent budget.

This location has expanded considerably since my days of eating here few years ago. The decor is much better. The menu has some what shrinked from the original one. I used to be able to order a plate of Chicken Salt and Pepper spare ribs and enjoy it, however thats no longer there.

Dishes are limited, however serves the purpose of late night dining!!
Sheera Brown
On a weekday and lunch, it might not be as hectic and the buffet is a little limited than dinner (but dinner has an added price). You will be able to sample your Asian favorites here-- dumplings, duck, chicken, fish etc. Come prepared to get filled up, save room for dessert because there is much to enjoy! Place is clean, service is okay.
Upendra
Went there after party as me and my friends were really hungry.
I had Nasi goreng and pork ribs. Nasi goreng was so oily and ribs look like boil ribs dip in soy sauce. Common guys seriously.
Jennitals
LIT!: so quick and cheap! Great place for late night hang out with friends as well- almost my alternative food Maccas. I've tried most of their menu and most are pretty enjoyable.

NOT SO LIT: pretty average to well done Asian food but they are consistent which is great!
Hungry Jeweller
Food is pretty average Asian fare. Poor service, long wait times for simple items, borderline rude staff. Only plus side is shop opening till wee hours.
Tham Ying Ying
BBQ Pork Rice was absolutely delicious. A generous portion of meat. Sauce was a perfect balance of saltiness and sweetness. Soft fluffy rice.
S3332929
The best priced food in the CBD, the duck leg and soy chicken go together perfect, fast service unless its a Saturday night full house which is understandable. Very tasty and wide menu range, the best place for a casual night out.
Fussy Eater
Good flavours but terrible business model. My nasi lemak was barely warm when it arrived, my Peking duck pancakes were soggy on the bottom & and my dumplings weren't hot either. Given the food arrived moments after we ordered I'd say they have pretty decent chefs but they precook & reheat. Even with good flavours I feel no reason to return. Particularly since there are so many great places nearby.
James Bowers
This review is for the vegetable omelette on rice with their house chilli sauce. The rest of the menu is fairly bad. Don't bother. The omelette is incredible, though.
Dj Meowmeow
BIGGEST COCKROACH I HAVE EVER SEEN CRAWLING RIGHT NEXT TO MY FACE ON THE WALL.
staff came up, grabbed it in a napkin like it was nothing (so they're obviously used to them) and walked away. Will never ever ever eat there again ever. SERIOUSLY, IT WAS BIGGER THAN MY PALM!
Cookiemonsta
Hit and miss. I usually stick to my roast meats, crispy pork can sometimes have more fat strips than meat. Other times it's great for a late night feed!
Mark William Alexander
Half way through my sweet and sour chicken I found an elastic band in my food. Wouldn't go back here again. Let's hope I don't get sick tomorrow.
Liam Tay Kearney
Used to go here for late night feeds and the noodles are very satisfying for that type of thing.

Wonton noodle soup was a favourite.
Ignatia
I applaud them for the fast service on New Year's eve. We were starving at 1am so we went here because this China Bar was less crowded than the one on Swanston Street. Our food came in less than 10 minutes. The waiters and chefs were super busy to ensure all customers got their food asap. As for the food, it was okay, generous portion and worth the price.
Natasha Karan
EAT HERE IF YOU LIKE FLYS IN YOUR FOOD!
Ate dinner here, found a fly in my food, sent it back. They WIPED the fly off after requesting they make the food again. The 'made' the food again, halfway through eating I FIND THE FLY IN MY FOOD AGAIN! Never, ever, ever again will I eat here, no matter how hungry I am. While I'm at it, If you're the owner of the business and you're reading this - teach your staff some manners!
Aekarin Borrirak
The food and service are not up to average. Most food is precooked and just reheat for you. They need to improve both staff's attitude and the restaurant's cleanliness. Also the additional service charge after midnight is really bad.
Vibhushan Manchanda
The worst service I have ever experienced in my life, and that's coming from a Perth local. Slow and inattentive. This place had okay food but having to wait over an hour when we wanted some food in the belly before bed truly did ruin our night.
Nomafoodic Chipineats
Recent review: Went back recently and the hainanese chicken rice was unsatisfying. It was overly salty, and the chicken slices where half broken and falling apart. The Siu mais were tasty. Plum drink also a little too sweet and fizzy.

Old review:
On one not-so-fine Melbourne night, my tummy felt pretty darn hungry. After a long day's work I was craving something with rice, meat and salt. Well what do you know... China Bar was open. So what did I order? The Hainanese Chicken Rice of course. That's one of the dishes that manage to improve over the many years when China Bar began as a chinese smorgasbord joint near Melbourne University. You get what you get after chowing it down so quickly. A little bloated. But that's ok. Even the russkiy had some.
Elizabeth S
China Bar is a dependable place for supper and super late night eating. The hainanese chicken rice is my go to item here. Very fast, no fuss service. The place can be a bit grotty at times but to me that's normal cause they trade for so many hours a day and is constantly busy.
Joshua Beach
I just got attacked by the wait staff after asking one for a extra napkin to which her response was to throw a handful on our table. I asked what the problem was to which she swore at us and I tried to leave without paying for a half eaten meal to which I was cornered at the door and threatened by the senior management. I have worked in hospitality for ten years and never felt so threatened in my whole life by people who are meant to be working in customer service. A joke of an establishment. The most racist horrible staff in the whole of Australia. Horrible food. Horrible service. Horrible management.
Nina
I quite enjoyed my late night dinner here last night. Meals came out quickly and they were delicious! We ordered the pork ribs on rice, fried squid tentacles and beef brisket and wontons. Portions were very generous, one of the better experiences from china bar! Far superior than its Fitzroy branch.
Donutsam
My parents adore China Bar, to the point where they visited three times over the course of a single week. My drunk friends also adore it, to the point where they visited three times over the course of a single night. This one’s open to wee hours on going out nights and consistently delivers quality, speedy meals across a familiar range of Asian profiles.
Quinn
I had a wonton noodle soup. Everything is just so average that it didn't leave any impression on me at all. Yet it's a good place to have a cheap, quick and decent meal.
Nashi Dasgupta
Yummmy Chinese Food at great prices in the main CBD of Melbourne. As you cross China Town inside Target Centre there are many small Cafes and Restaurants and this places serves great Chinese Food.We Tried the Tofu Vegetable Noodles.
Susie Tran
This place is bloody ridiculous. Terrible service and food. Told us we could have a table of 8 people then split us up into a table of 4,2 and 2. Absolute farce.
Our Foodie Finds
China Bar on Russell in the CBD is not the same anymore in both quality and taste. Service is still the same which is quick, decor is standard, not much to look at but somehow always full of patrons.

We remember going to China Bar back in the day after a night out on the town and grabbing the standard two roast meats special being crispy bbq pork and roast duck on rice. Juicy, flavoursome, didn't have very much fat and well seasoned. Can't say it's the same anymore and guess its hit and miss but more on the miss side.

There's plenty of other choices in around the area so unless you're really in the mood for sub-par Chinese food, walk a few meters up towards Lonsdale and grab yourself a Kebab or a HSP from Stalictites. Till next time, this is Our Foodie Find!
Neil
The go-to place after a night out in the city, ChinaBar is open till 4am and has an expansive menu. You can trying the Sui Mai dumplings, or the Hor Fun noodles, roast duck with rice or the simple Mee Goreng.
Khpn
The scene of many drunken nights, china bar is great after a big night of drinking if you want a cheap asian meal, although as of recent times they have jacked up the prices of all dishes, maybe to cover the cost of it burning down. All their dishes are ok but nothing to really write home about. Can also be a little hit and miss. I usually get the rice noodles with hainanese chicken, hainanese chicken rice, roasts with noodle soup. Service is ok.
Jessica
Service was incredibly quick!! The food came out 5 minutes after ordering. Waiter was a bit pissed that we asked for napkins and extra bowls. The vegetarian mi goreng noodles were decent quality
Zinko
My god, how can I even begin on how terrible the service and food were... First of all, I only bothered to write down this review as one of the customers sitting next to us asked for sauce from the waitress, in our surprise, even though my friends and I were not using the chili sauce in that moment, the waitress literally just grabs and takes it from our table without consulting us about it. It's rude and shows signs that they only think lowly of foreign customers. That's just one of them. In addition, the food was far from decent, it was plausible to conclude that the BBQ pork was cooked days before and only reheated on the microwave, no flavours whatsoever and I had to continuously douse soy sauce and chili sauce to get a taste in my palette. Also fried rice = plain rice that is dry. I recommend anyone who comes to this place to go somewhere else, its honestly a waste of money.

Worst meal ever ! Worst services ever! I ordered hot and sour soup, it's taste like sugar with hot water! Told the waiter and he rudely took it back without saying anything. Instead of making a new one the chef just added vinegar to it. Not to mention we paid for our meal first and they never gave our CHANGE BACK !! This place used to be good now it has gone down hill ever since they renovated !! HIGHLY NOT RECOMMENDED AT ALL !

Ordered the soya chicken for take away. I didn't expect so much, but the chicken turned out to be just decent enough for the price. $12 for half chicken.

We went there for a friend's farewell dinner buffet. Food was average but we had the voucher for buy two get one free hence a good deal for a group of 10.
Tessa Peach
The best thing about this China Bar is its location, and that it's open 24 hours - sometimes I find myself in the city late at night, not having had dinner... and this place is always welcome sight.Very busy, with many levels and heaps of staff serving, this restaurant is a good palce to come at any time. The food quality is OK, I usually order dumplings or buns, or other entrees; the other dishes can be quite heavy and salty if youre not accustomed. I am slightly tempted to order the whole soya pig though, one day..... the staff also seem to prioritise Asian customers, and food comes out at very different times to the same table. The pork buns were beautifully light and fluffy although the dumplings order you only get three which is too few in my opinion.
Rose
This place is a big Nope to me. I used to eat here so many times before but after a year the place is unrecognizable in a very negative way. Although I never expect good customer service when I go to cheap Asian restaurants, the waiting staff here are beyond rude. I got ignored, like intentionally ignored. It is as if they thought ignoring customers was cool. I was kept waiting while they chit chatted to each other. No water was served to table until I had to ask and got ignored a few times. Food was hit n miss. I saw a bloke who was extremely disappointed at the service and tried to complain at the counter. No one cared. Their attitude was like " if you are not satisfied, don't come back at all". Overall, horrible. The only China bar where I find consistent good food and service is the one in Box Hill. Bravo to the manager or owner who seems to be there almost every day.
My recommendation is.., if it's before 4am n you crave for some good asian food, head to Minh Xuong, Linh Nan and Supper Inn.
Unga Bunga Bunga G
This place is good fun, namely because it's open 24/7. After a night out clubbing/drinking, there's nothing better than cheap, rich, greasy, fatty, delicious Chinese food to cap the night off with.
Nige12
Always open, but the food isn't great. I don't mind their fried rice dishes and bbq pork, however there are much better options down the road in Chinatown. Service is also lacking and the food despite being average is a little more pricey than most similar restaurants nearby.

Fast but bad service, good menu but a mediocre meal. Trading hours are probably the best part of this restaurant, if you need a feed at midnight they can help.

Went there at 5 am on Saturday morning with a mate. Ordered fried rice with chicken & prawn which came out very quick but was too dry to eat. Very bland taste. We had to ask the waitress to provide us with some chilli sauce with it. Satay chicken screwers (3 screwers) were really nice as they were well coated in peanut sauce. Also ordered the Kung poo chicken with rice which looked very appealing and colourful but tasted sweet. Only 3 pieces of chicken and rest was onions, red capsicum and peanuts, no gravy. Too dry. Expected it to be savoury. Not happy with the meals as we paid $34 for it. To make our taste better we had to order 2 lychee Ice teas. Service was really quick which was the only good thing about this busy place. Will give 1 more try to this place and try something else next time.

This place is hit and miss, I've had really good dishes and some bad ones as well. very fast service, price is reasonable good customer service.

This China Bar has fallen from grace. It used to be somewhat affordable and reasonable Chinese food and now it's a disgrace. My most recent experience was met with rude staff, poor quality badly prepared food and having to fill out our own orders on the back of a receipt and take it to the counter! Definitely need to get their act together.

Frequently visit this place, but tonight was disappointing! The pork buns were cold, and not only did they deliver the spring rolls to the wrong table, but twice to the wrong table! It's not rocket science, lift your game China bar! Fire up Kenny!
Fank you! ✌🏻

No communication on how to order or pay (you have to pay before your food arrives). The food is nasty and of very, very low quality. I wouldn't even eat here if I was intoxicated. Go get a souva next door if you need a fix after drinking. DON'T DO IT.

Went to China Bar for dinner last night and was incredibly disappointed with the food and service. The people working there were rude and unhelpful. They ignored our requests, got orders wrong and were very disrespectful. The food was excessively oily and flavourless. One of the employees took an unwarranted photo of my group and when confronted lied. Do not go here

Offers many dining options, can't recommend venturing here late at night.
Service is shocking, if you get seated, you order and pay first. The meals conjured up this time are of low quality, with the obvious exploitation that you're too alcohol blind to realise.
Lunch and dinner times are better, offering a buffet service which I can recommend.
The prices and plates vary also differ at this time.

“Consistently fast, good food and terrible service for Supper”
Their signature is bad service & super fast good food. It has not change, does not matter when you dined.

What can I say about China Bar. Tasty and cheap. Do not expect 5 star service. The restaurant is slightly dirty. Half the staff speaks very little English. You want better service, go somewhere else. You want good food, this is the place to be if you want a nice and cheap night.

Ordered the hor fun to share with a friend. The egg gravy was surprisingly "authentic". I liked their ice lemon tea too - not awfully sweet like some lemon tea could be. Hated the service though. Asked for two plates and the waiter, for some reason, preferred to use gestures instead of words to respond. His gestures include pointing to my seat and waving me off. Did not understand whether he was going to give me the plates or not. He did after we waited for 5 mins, but that was just so confusing. Would have to minus points for the rude service.

Too salty! It definitely contains so much MSG, feel really thirsty after eating here. The price is too expensive, considering the portion like their dumplings. But I have to say, the chilli and the fried rice is not bad

This place has never disappointed me. It is open 24X7!!!! I come here when I am looking for good value for money Chinese food, on a night near Swanston and not feeling adventurous enough to try a new place.

Their curry chicken with noodles is simply delicious. I have also tried the Hainanese chicken on a different night which again was pretty good. I can't advocate for other items from their menu but from the appearance and reactions of patrons eating them, I would like to find out someday. :)

China Bar is probably one of the worst place you can go to for chinese food. There is TON of MSG, service is so bad. When i ordered my sweet and sour pork, there was so little pork. the pork to flour ratio was like 8:2. such a turn off. Wonton was horrible. money not well spent.

Went to China Bar with a friend at around 2am after enjoying some drinks. The staff were friendly, even with dealing with the late night rush. I ordered the wonton soup and chicken curry with rice. The wontons were quite tough, and unenjoyable, and I would not order them again, however the broth was good. The curry chicken was very nice, although I found it difficult trying to seperate the chicken from the bones, as no knifes are offered in the cutlery holder, and would have much preferred the chicken to be off the bone, as suggested in the picture on the menu. My friend ordered the pork buns, and he seemed to enjoy them. Overall it was a good find for a late night eat, but I wouldn't go out of my way to revisit this restaurant.

My husband ordered green tea smoothie and they served us this drink which looked like vanilla smoothie and it tasted like one too, so we told them that it's not green tea but they insisted that it's green tea and they offered to make us a new one. We refused to take it but they served us a new drink anyway which ended up looking and tasting like the first one they served!! The food was flavourless!

After a late night out. We decided to grab some food. We came across China bar which is open 24/7.

Neat food and good value for money. Tried a few dishes. Amazing Shanghai dumplings and impressed with the food overall. Only thing negative was size of restaurant. Overly cramped with limited room to move.
