Review Smile Thai Cuisine - Melbourne

Ruchira De silva
Customer service were friendly but they took so long to make the food. We have tried chill special fried rice , seafood fried rice, basil fried rice. Portion size were good but the taste was average. Basil fried rice didn’t had the authentic thai flavour at all. I reckon they have used sweet chili sources for making it worse.

2.6☆ Although the staff were lovely, the food just didn't hit it. Chicken satay Skewers had a delicious sauce, but the chicken was a tad dry. 3☆ $9.90 Salt & pepper squid had to be a store brought. Wasn't overly satisfying at all. 2☆ $9.90 And the Mee Goreng w/crispy pork wasn't what I was expecting for a Mee Goreng. And the pork was very dry. 3☆ $18.90 Walked in and ordered takeaway, it was cooked fresh and fast, and brought out to us while we wait here outside.

Staff were very friendly and nice! We ordered papaya salad with soft shell crab, chicken minced salad, chicken satay skewers, fried rice with pork belly and pork salad. Food was quick. Love the out door atmosphere and their soft shell crab in somtam.

I am so satisfied with my order! I got a chicken satay wrap and a vegetable laksa. Both were made so perfectly with good quality ingredients. Happy belly's here. Delivery also was super quick! Easy 10/10!

Ordered these for our last minute dinner but the pad siew we is extremely salty and the pad Thai was very sweet. The pineapple fried rice was the only one that we could finish. Don't think we'll go back.

Uber Eats order, Satay Skewers, Chilli and Basil Stir-fry, Garlic Roti, simply excellent, great food!
Mochi Mimi
Beef salad is amazing and don’t miss roti wrap with satay chicken 😋

Delicious, juicy, generous servings. Best Thai food in the neighbourhood. Do yourself a favour and try it

Ordered via doordash. I had a bad impression at first because the packaging was poor, the sauce was spilled in the bag. The green curry tasted authentic and spicy, and the pad see ew was great too. The price was decent and the food portion was big. Would definitely recommend!

I regularly dine in or order delivery from this restaurant. When I dine from here, I buy on price for the most part as they are one of the more affordable Thai restaurants in the area, particularly for delivery. The vegetarian Pad Thai and vegetarian Pad See Ew are my favourites. Both very delicious dishes. The vegetarian green curry is decent as well. I wish their vegetables were a little softer at times but I still highly recommend.

Ordered via phone to pick up. Requested to add an extra ingredient to pad Thai which was not added. Asked for two servings of skewers and only received one. The pad Thai was incredibly bland with next to no toppings, a couple of stray bean shoots and raw shredded carrot.
My partner enjoyed the spicy prawn rice

I enjoyed the food and friendly service. Not the best but great local restaurant. Predinner before Comedy Club. Give it a try.

Ordered lunch from here through uber eats. The Pad Thai had a nice flavour but the Crispy Pork belly with oyster sauce was lacking sauce and the pork itself was really dry and overcooked.was quite an average meal really

Excellent PadThai soothes some comfort food requirements after a long day in the office. The green curry was spicy as request but a thin. I like my curry cooked down so it’s a bit thicker. Would order again though. Thanks team :-)

Pleasantly surprised! I tried the South Yarra outlet years ago and did not rate it, however I must say the standard has improved and Smile Thai, West Melbourne is great. We ordered green chicken and Thai beef salad take away. Both were authentic and full of flavour and good quality produce. Good value!

Delicious and authentic Thai food prepared and served with care and respect. Lovely attentive staff and uncluttered decor. Apart from the Uber and deliveroo distraction, this place is consistent and well priced.

The satay chicken was great, the satay sauce is creamy and tasty, and the meat is tender.

I always have the seafood tomyum at here, becoz that is my flovour. If you like more Thai flavour ,u can request more spicy and sour . ( I ❤️spicy )

Besides, coconut rice is better than the normal rice with green curry . Comparing with the other Thai place, I like the Thai milk tea the most at here . It's cost $5.

Customer service was great.

We order thai fairly often and smile thai delivery online is consistently good and we appreciate particularly that the curries have a variety of vegetables.

I UberEATS from this place. Food was made extra quick, faster than the estimated time although it was midnight lol. Got the chicken pad thai which was AMAZING. It looked quite average in the takeaway box but once I poured it out onto a plate, it was like a double portion! Didn't look saucy but let me tell you, the thai flavours made my heart smile. A lot of poor ratings from this place makes me wonder if the service was better or if everyone just uberATE, their ratings would definitely be more grand.
MissionBake
Overpriced Tiny portions. You've eaten yet you've not. The sauce overpowered the ingredients. Curry was passable but very dilute. Lots of room for improvement.

I ordered takeaway delivery from Uber Eats. The portion sizes were very small and too expensive. The food did not taste like authentic Thai food. Overall, no flavour added to the food. Very disappointing in comparison to the enticing images. Only reason why it is getting 0.5 extra rating is because the sous vide beef texture was good.

Can I give zero for the review? Knew this place from liven. Have the pud thai prawn $14.9 while dine in is $2 extra. Only 4 shrimp and not even prawn. Very small in portion for the pud thai and the taste is bland, no sweet no umami no salty and nothing, very flat, 2 out of the 4 shrimp tasted off. The decor is very traditional, stained floor board were actually a bit sticky. I was the only diner there and the neighbours are quite packed. The local seems to know this is a no go zone. With liven voucher, I got this meal for free but won't go back for sure.

friendly service, but when we got our food everything was lathered in grease and the chicken skewers we got were barely edible; out of the 8 sticks we got, we couldn't eat half because the meat was so pink - one bit was still so barely cooked, it was completely red.

the seafood with lemongrass wasn't much better; full size, but consisted mostly of vegetables. seafood was limited and range was very sparse.

overall, although our server was nice, the food was not and we will sadly not be coming back.
FOOD TRIP
Smile Thai is a simple little Thai restaurant in West Melbourne. They serve up all the usual Thai dishes and prices are reasonable. Food is decent, but nothing too special. Thai Milk Tea $5. Creamy and sweet. Good to balance out all the spicy flavours. 7/10. Grilled Satay Chicken Skewer (4 pcs) $7.90
Watermelon
Wow, this place is a joke! The food was below average and with little flavour. Easily one of the worst Thai restaurants I have ever been to. Very strange decor with framed certificates everywhere. Most unappealing window display. We won't go back.

The "Yum salad" was delicious but only had a few prawns which was disappointing. The thai milk tea was refreshing!

Not a bad place by any standard but not "wow" worthy either.

Yummy is a word that I can use for this restaurant.
Great food... Fresh and yummy.
The waitress serving us was fantastic no words can describe her customer service skills.
I would recommend this cozy restaurant to everyone.
I'd give a 0 if i could. This Korean owned Thai joint is just a joke... I've been to Thailand multiple times so I know about their food. Whatever they served at this place was way far from what you'd get in Thailand. Yeah yeah... Localization n all that crap... BUT IT'S JUST GONE TOO FAR. If you wanna grab a quick takeaway lunch or dinner? Fine. Go for it.

That all are really delicious . Specially is the sauce with Satay chicken ! Awesome ❤️ Tomyam always is my favourite soup! I ordered a extra Spicy & sour tomyam noodle which I changed the rice noodle to hokkien noodle but that's too much for me, that's why I got a container for takeaway ✌🏻. 👍🏼U must try the Thai milk tea if u love the Thai tea ice cream too! 🤗 Excellent service 👏

Ordered takeaway/delivery from here the other day. Not too bad, considering its relatively moderate price!

We had the red duck curry ($14.90) and the chilli basil chicken ($8.90). Both of which were delicious for the price. The meat was quite dry in both - but I would attribute it to the fact they probably cooked it very quickly (the delivery only took 20 minutes from when we placed the order online!)

Overall satisfying Thai, and a good generous amount, as you can see in the pictures (re-plated from the containers)

Very cute little restaurant with soo much charm.
Upon arrival we were greeted with a smile and a sweet softy spoken lady allowed us a choice of seat as it was fairly empty at the time since we had dinner quite early.
I wish I took a photo of the restaurant as it was quite charming with Thai influences around.
We came in with a Groupon deal and paid a little extra since we went over our $60 quota
Entrees: (we forgot to take photos since we were quite hungry)
Roti bread with satay sauce - very nice
Chicken spring rolls - not too bad
Curry puffs - this was my favourite with soo much flavour.
Main: pork pad Thai - really lovely and quite clean
Chicken chilli basil - this was my favourite dish... just enough heat and fragrant
Large rice : I should really had ordered a small one as the serve was quite generous, then again we had ordered a lot of food for two hehe.
So halfway through our mains we were quite full but I was intrigued by the pandan crepe with coconut ice cream for desert.
Was unique and quite enjoyable.

Will definitely be added to our takeaway list and will return again.

Awesome food and great hospitality.
The Foodie Mummy
The service was great. But unfortunately that was the only pleasant aspect of this restaurant. I ordered takeway for lunch, and upon receiving and going away with my food i was defintely happy. When i opened the lid and took a bite it was completely tasteless. I kept digging hoping to find redemption only to find disappointment. Honestly tasted like it was microwaved, and very unsatisfying.

I actually really enjoyed my time hear. It was good to taste authentic thai dishes though in some areas improvements can be made. Staff was really friendly , maybe it's because we were thai but I really enjoyed the vibe and the surroundings. It's a very tiny restaurant so can be very tight and being the colder season it had been unpleasant to actually sit right near the door with the cold breeze coming in once someone walked through. The price can be pricey for portion size but over all an okay place that can do with improvements .
Penny Drop
Tom yum was not edible, smelt and tasted of rancid fish.

Prawn skewers, where it says '4 pieces' is literally 1 prawn per skewer. Tasty, but one would generally assume '4 pieces' would refer to 4 skewers with multiple prawns.

Good food Great quality. Lots of menu to choose. Crispy potato prawns is one amazing dish and it taste very well with Beer Chang!

Best fish cake, Singha beer is cold enough, but carrot in Patthai ?

By far the yummiest Thai I have had in Melbourne. They have changed their menu recently and thus some favourites have disappeared(bring back the roti wrap please!!) but I suppose the positive of this is that theyre tryig to keep things fresh and interesting! In any case always delicious food and wonderul friendly service! Highy recommend!!

Good food with reasonable price. We ordered chicken spring roll and a mixed skewer for the entree, beef salad and chicken fried rice for the mains. The spring rolls came in 4 pieces with sweet chilli sauce and salad and the mixed skewer came with the satay sauce. It taste brilliant for the appetiser. I was impressed by how they decorate the plate. The chicken fried rice served us delicious plate. One of our favourite dish were Thai beef salad. It has thai herbs and combination of sweet and sour savour. The food was delicious, reasonable price, staff are friendly. I will definitely come back to Smile Thai next time.

Disappointing.. Smile Thai Cuisine left an initial great impression - the place is nice enough, the decor's tasteful, and they've got flowers, wine glasses and serviettes already set out on the table. Our server was smiling as she led us in. Then it all went downhill.

-Vegetarian spring rolls: nicely presented, but average. Four spring rolls, supermarket quality. Came with a small dipping bowl and a small bit of salad on the side.
-Fish cakes: also average. Came with a dip, and a small bit of salad on the side.
-Beef massaman curry: The potatoes were lovely, soft and fluffy! But the beef was unexpectedly tougher than expected. Undercooked carrots - shouldn't have to put effort into chomping down on them.

We stopped after that, got the pad thai and banana fritters as takeaway. Now this is where the surprise comes in: it's 50c for a takeaway box. Fine, fair enough. Oh, it's another 50c to get the banana fritters as takeaway. Okay, we'll pay that too.

They put the banana fritters into a brown paper bag. You seriously charged us another 50c to put two fritters into a paper bag. I thought we were paying for a plastic box? The oil was leaking through. Were there napkins? No. Were there plastic forks for us to actually eat the things? No. Did you help put the food into the box? No. It's surprising, because the place has gone through the effort of putting real flowers on the table, like it understood that it's these little small touches that make or break a place.

How big are the portions? The takeaway box was 500g, and the pad thai fit in comfortably, so I'd say 400-450g? It was untouched on the plate before it went into the box, so that's how much is being served.

Conclusion: Maybe this place does takeaway well. For people who have their own forks and serviettes at home, these things aren't problems. If you're eating thai in front of the TV, you won't actually notice that the food was not great to begin with, because you don't expect takeaway to be as good as food in a restaurant. But as an actual dining out experience - no. Just no.

Strongly recomended !! I we.... Strongly recomended !!
I went to Smile Thai with Grouon vocher. I have read thru all review before I go there . After read from reviews made me a bit afraid to destroy romantic dinner with me and my partner. When I turned up , everything is better than I expect . The food and service are the best . The staff are friendly and give me very good suggestion. Also they gave us many options because we dont drink wine and we are vegetarian . Definitely I will come back . Thank you Smile Thai to make our day

Reviewer. Strongly NOT recommended!!!
We got a Groupon voucher for 4 but only 3 of us turned up as other one could not make it. We were not warmly welcomed and staff was very cold and unfriendly. To top up our disappointment was the unfulfilled little request for swapping 4 glasses of wine to 2 glasses of juice for little children. Would NEVER come back again!!!

Smile. Good food-good service-great price=top place

Went here on a whim and ordered the pad Thai without meat, only tofu. It was profoundly average. It was too sweet overall and when I asked for some lime to fix that, I was brought lemon. The tofu was cold as if the cook had just cut it up and added tossed it through the noodles after they'd been cooked.

Ironically not a lot to smile about here. The food was actually reasonably good, but this in no way compensated for the indifferent service which was nothing short of hideous. You'd do well to spend your hard earned elsewhere

Bought deal on groupon, entre dishes were yummy but the main dishes were like "dessert" sweet. Friendly service but a little slow. Not the best thai joint

Late night dinner on Thursday night - we were the only people in the restaurant but seated with a smile even if we were wondering if they were ready to go home at 10pm, officially they are open until 11pm, good to know did late night dinners. Generous servings and quite cheap, red curry duck $14 and a really large coconut rice for $4. The duck lots of slices of lean meat and veggies, lychees and pineapple, the curry itself too sweet and watery for me. But it was hot, cheap, fresh dinner so very late at night I was very glad to have.

Was here on a groupon deal staff friendly, food great,
Would definatly go back.

I came here with 14 people, the place is nice but they couldn't handle the large amount of people. The dishes were very nice but we didn't get rice until after so the dishes were a bit cold. My Tom yum soup came out much later then everyone else's and it ended up being the wrong dish.

Impressed. I was quite impressed with the service, they were very warm and welcoming, their food was great too and I found there serving sizes were quite decent too.
Bella
Food is ok and very small serving. Wr ordered the fish curry with our rice and noodles and it came out cold. Not even warm. The servings are very small too. The sift shell crab - u get 2 small pieces and the rest r carrots, onions and capsicum, there r definitely much better Thai places to go to. But the staff r real helpful .
Dora
Love this place. Great food friendly service would definitely go there again
Friendly Customer
Very friendly staff and great food. Great Prices for quality food. Will definitely be returning again. :)

GOOD FOOD GOOD SERVICE. Very happy with this place.
see you again!
Unbearable Appetite
Left with a Smile. Used a groupon voucher, received a very tasty feed.
Food is very reasonable priced,
Our meal included Satay skewers, spring rolls, Chicken cashew, fried vermicelli noodles rice, we we're too full for desert! Everything was quality, decent serving sizes as well, we enjoyed everything.
The service was impeccable, we were greeted ever so warmly. Throughout the meal they were very gracious and they accommodated our dietary needs.
Overall a wonderful meal, shall be returning with a smile.....ja ja ja.

Prawn with mango sauce. Good food Good taste Good service

Terrible. These guys really need to up their game. Frozen food from the supermarket would have been way better than their wontons and spring rolls. The food could not even be called okay...it was bad. Would not recommend.
Lulubel
Not bad, not great. Ordered takeaway, the guy on the phone was really nice and it arrived promptly.

Started with a couple of salads, a very small looking Papaya with Prawns (which are only visible under a microscope - maybe call them dehydrated shrimp on the menu?) and a Gado Gado which seems difficult for most places to get right.

Green Chicken Curry would have been nice had it not been watered down - I could tell there were potentially good flavours. The chicken and veg were all cooked perfectly.

The Chicken Fried Rice was enjoyable (the kids loved it), as was the Coconut Rice.

Maybe because we ordered takeaway, it wasn't up to scratch? Maybe the other reviews are a tad fake (only one review for many and no details on the food)? Might try again, might not ...

Best Thai in North Melbourne. This place is the best in North Melbourne shops area. Food is WAY too delicious for its price range, usually $8-$14. The staff are friendly and makes the experience that much greater. Recommended for all.

Awesome Experience. This place is amazing. Food is delicious and cheap, interior looks stunning, owner and staff are friendly and very helpful. Will definitely be going back soon! Highly recommend trying this little place out.
