Review Merchant Society - Melbourne

Ordered the vegetarian laksa and the serving is big and full of fresh veggies! Has grilled eggplant in it too. Although I got to say that this dish is not totally vegetarian as it has chicken broth. Most of their other vegetarian dishes also contain shrimp paste, so if you are a strict vegetarian, you can only order the fried rice. Nice ambience and very friendly staff. Thank you for the wonderful dining experience :)

Great spot for work lunches/functions. Food was super yummy and friendly service

#supportlocal and show Charlie some love. Great place for Christmas dinner for work, they will look after you and your table. Lots of great food. Highly recommend. We go here for our dinner every year for one of my work places. The owner is funny, the food is fantastic and the area is not that hard to find parking. The only change I would make is the broken seats and table need to be removed and not just left with a sign on them, but I understand how hard this can be when you don't expect people to damage your stuff. This is one meal I enjoy each year, and I will sometimes go mid year for a top up. Although I don't always mind the people there of who I am.

I love this place. Close to my workplace and go to place for wholesome lunch. Chicken curry and roti is amazing. Will be trying the whole menu by year end I guess.. hahaha

Delicious food - Pork steamed dumplings, Prawn Laksa and Beef Rendang Curry along with really nice hospitality and service.

Delicious Asian cuisine, tried veg fries rice, fresh ingredients reasonable price

Incredible food! Second time I have been here and again it didn't disappoint. We were there with a big group, so service was a little slow. But otherwise I can't fault them. Yum!

Great food, friendly service. Prices are reasonable. Only drawback is that they are currently only open for dinner on Thursday onwards. Hopefully they operate 7 days soon.

Came for a work lunch and they definitely needed to do something about that aircon.

Ordered:
🍝 Singapore Noodles (seafood): stir fry rice vermicelli noodles, with seafood, egg, onion, green capsicum, beansprout, spring onion with special curry paste ($17.70)

Review:
The Singapore noodles were simple, but exactly what I needed. It's not fancy, or as yellow I was expecting but the juiciness of the prawn was everything.
The quantity was also unreal. I left feeling full, satisfied and happy with the meal!

Service was slow which is not quite ideal for a lunch break. I'd recommend asking if you could pre-book, but we were left waiting for a fair bit.

On a humid day, sitting at Merchant Society was an almost sweaty experience. I don't know whether the aircon was broken that day, or if there was poor air circulation but by god. Skirts sticking to the seat, worried about butt prints on your pants wasn't quite the outcome I expected or wanted after the meal. 🤣

Good food with variety of option and a great ambience.Recommended for a team lunch, large group based on prior booking.

Excellent food - had the sizzling beef and the sweet and sour chicken with prawn on toast + fried chicken as an entree and it was absolutely delicious ! There was nothing that I didn't enjoy. The ambience is lovely - the restaurant is regularly filled with customers and the owner Charlie always makes an effort to come by and chat if you're a regular. Definitely not something to miss out on if you're in Docklands !

Had the chicken laksa in a Friday lunch break. Delicious! Good serving size and great flavour. Usually I don’t like any other laksa compared to Laksa King, but this is on par. Yum!

A different option for us to grab lunch away from the many Vietnamese and other Asian restaurants near the block.

Food can take some time to arrive at lunch time but the atmosphere and outdoor seatings was quite nice for us to chat over a drink as well.

From the few times that we went here, the food doesn't give authentic Malaysian flavours as I found dish lacking certain spices but nonetheless a decent feed.
Sivashankar Sivam
Made a reservation for 12 of us and we came in at 1:15pm for our Friday work lunch - at 1:50pm we had to ask them to pack our food instead of serving us eat in as only 3 of us got served by 1:30pm

For $14.60( the meat lovers with rice ) there was 5 strips of beef and a truck load of rice. Though tasty, there was barely any meat or vegetables to warrant that price tag.

Definitely a no go for me next time.

I was able to get an immediate booking via quandoo for five people on a Friday lunchtime
Definitely make a booking as this place was packed

Water is served in used high quality vodka bottles (think belvedere and grey goose). You keep to hail the staff to get their attention. Good arrives ad ie is made rather than all at once

As the place is Malaysian fusion you will see thai and Singaporean dishes on the menu. My recommendation stick to the Malaysian dishes
The beef rendang and chicken kampong were uniquely delicious with undercurrents of coconut in thick gravy succulent chicken thigh and large pieces of beef.

The roti is definitely made by them rather than the frozen store bought ones and is thin but layered.

My colleague who is Malaysian didnt like his thai style fried chicken dish.

Venue is beautiful. Service is quick. Would go back

Came here for a farewell with my colleagues. We had ordered a variety of dishes and I stuck to the street food style “Nasi Goreng”.. the dishes was tasty with good quantity. Will definitely come again. The pricing was was around the usual of $15 around Docklands.

I paid over $20 for lunch at this place. It’s definitely on the expensive side but you don’t get the quality of food. What you get here again is the environment.

Went on a Saturday night to this little hidden Docklands gem. What an amazing experience! I was blown away by the freshness of the produce and the subtle blend of flavours. Having been all over South East Asia i was pleasantly surprised by the authenticity of some dishes, and the creativity of the fusion dishes I consumed.

The prices are reasonable and the Manager was knowledgeable and very accomodating. I heartily recommend this venue for lunch or dinner. Do yourself a favour and get on down.

Waited over an hour for lunch to arrive. Wouldn’t recommend going there on a working day. Would suggest the waitresses let people know how long it is going to take if they anticipate a delay this long.

Did a takeaway from this place. They are very accommodating 1) dietary requirement 2) I actually called in the afternoon to put in order for my dinner pick up. Took them 15 minutes to get the food ready from opening time and it was still hot when we had it.

Bara Apple: Delicious. The fish was succulent and the skin was crispy. Love the apples and lime dressing. The sweetness and sourness of the dressing with the green Apple, onion, coriander, fresh chillies are so refreshing and does goes well with the fish. Balanced flavour. A must try I said.

Me Sweet You Sour (Sweet and Sour Chicken) : my type of sweet and sour. Which doesn’t use vinegar to make the sauce sour. The batter is a bit too thick but it doesn’t bother me. Love the capsicums, tomatoes and pineapple in the sauce. Just like the sweet and sour I have in Malaysia.

Will return to try other items on the menu.

Had a team lunch here. I ordered fish three ways (garlic chilli and tamarind) and could not taste any of the ways. Instead it was sweet chilli. Was quite disappointed. Although the $4 carlton draught pots were amazing value. Should fix the dish. I ordered extra chilli and that helped a little but certainly far from tasty.

Service was good. Ordered a "special" for $16.80 and it tasted like honey chicken from a bay marie. Having said that it did have coriander and I asked for sambal with it and that helped a bit. Tasted ok but definitely not worth the price though. I'd suggest really thinking about the sauce both taste wise and thickness wise and they have a shot at improving my rating.
Foodme
Had the curry laksa, it wasnt bad but didnt have that zing and depth of flavour you expect of a good laksa. It was the service that dropped the rating, when they got an order wrong they insisted they didnt get it wrong and placed the bowl infront of my friend and said thats what you ordered when the whole table knew it wasnt. Did apologise an offer a drink but id rather you go and get the right order. Also the time between the first and last order being brought out was at least 20mins.
Split The Bill
It has been a while since I have been here so decided to pop in for some lunch last week.

We started with the Pad thai and all agreed that it lacked a flavour punch.

I had the green curry with rice and my collegues had the Sweet sour pork and stir fried beef all served with nuts and beanshoot on the side ( 🙌🙌 yay) with rice.
Nomafoodic Chipineats
Nice atmosphere and warm service. I had a quick lunch here and tried the sweet and sour dish. I was quite thickly batter, and I did not enjoy it much. The ambience was good though. Would be back to try the assam laksa. I saw someone order it and it looked quite good.
Hungry Jeweller
Run of the mill Aussie Asian fusion place. Food is average, not bad but not outstanding either. Ambience and decor are good. Good friendly service.

Verdict: Opal doublet

Have visited this restaurant several times and generally the food and service is very good. I booked a table recently for 18 persons and pre-ordered all the meals by email. Another staff member joined on the day and actually chose her meal once we arrived at the restaurant. Her meal came out in about 5 minutes whereas the rest of the 18 who pre-booked waiting for around 20 mins.
The owner explained that that's the way they do pre-ordering however for my additional staff member's order to have come out well before the people who pre-ordered was very embarrassing for me. Why even pre-order??
In addition we had several vegetarians in the group. To make things easier for the staff i'd printed out the names and meal choices for all the 18 staff. To my surprise my co-worker beside me, who ordered a vegetarian dish, pulled a prawn out of his meal. We alerted the staff member who confirmed that another of my table had received the vegetarian dish and this was the non vegetarian dish.
Luckily my co worker was not so upset that he'd just eaten a dish contaminated with meat. I could imagine some vegetarians in the same situation would have gone crazy over this.
The staff member didn't offer any solution and we had to push for her to make a new meal for my vegetarian co worker.
On leaving and paying the bill I received no smile or thanks/ come again from the staff and found her very cold following the 'prawn incident'.
As a result I don't think i'd return with a large group again.
I'm happy to go with just a few friends.

Thanks again for a great meal. We had soft shell crab for starters, very good. Followed this with Mee Goreng and Char Kuey Teoh. One of the best places in Docklands!

Great food, quick, pretty fair prices. I would score this place a 9 if I could.

Nice modern fusion décor and outside seating for summer. I'm always surprised it's not more busy!
Foodie Guy
A good beef rendang, the meat was nice but the sauce just needs more punch, I've tried paparich and mamak which has a bit more flavour to compare.
Overall the meal was nice reasonable price for a the meal and the customer service was very good.

Located in the heart of Docklands. I cross by this restaurant very often and went for lunch a few days back. They have a good variety in their menu. Although I expect Malaysian cuisine to be full of nice flavours, the food here was a bit bland. But I won't complain because the quality of the food was good. We ordered Nasi goreng in chicken. As such I enjoyed my meal. The place isn't very expensive and the staff is very sweet.

Have given this place a few chances, hoping that it was just a bad night / mistake but they continually mess up the order. I have been served red wine when I ordered white, forgotten dishes, not recorded takeaway correctly to get home and find it is missing, pay pass a credit card when you say not to - total lack of care and attention- and attention in general - not even attention to detail.

Food is generally good however most of the main menu is overpriced for what is served.

I had lunch here with a few colleagues and it was a bit of a hit and miss experience. The venue itself was nice and felt quite roomy. The service, however, was another thing and it seemed like the staff were unable to understand basic English. The first time was when I asked for no beansprouts for the Chicken Curry Laksa I ordered. The waitress had absolutely no idea what it was and we had to look through the menu to find the word before she scribbled it into her notepad and walked off. All but one of the meals had arrived at one point and we decided to wait patiently for close to 10 minutes before we asked the waitress for the whereabouts of the last meal. It turns out they had forgotten about it and they quickly apologised and said they would make it. We consequently had to wait another 5-10 minutes before the last dish was served.

In terms of the meal itself, I was pleasantly surprised with the Curry Laksa - it was actually pretty good and I would definitely recommend it. The portion was also decent and it wasn't expensive at all.

I also had a Liven account so I was able to get a 25% discount for the meals - another bonus was the fact that this restaurant accepted split bills which a lot of restaurants don't do these days.

edit: 2019. I've since visited this venue multiple times since my first review and the service has since greatly improved. The only change is that the Liven discount has decreased to 10%.

Nice new change to the menu since Tuesday. Tried Thai Green Curry and Fish 3 ways. Good that fish is Barra, perfectly cooked and delicious sauce. Looking forward to try BBQ Wings, Api Chicken and something else that I could not remember
.

Went for team lunch, gets quite busy. Lovely little place for lunch. Prices were reasonable, had an extensive lunch menu, service was good but we were sitting next to counter was hard to get their attention. Food was okay, good portions and good price. In docklands theres a Vietnamese restaurant around every corner; so having a malaysian cuisine around the area was very exciting.

What can I say the merchant society is one of our fav's there most weekends for dinner love the food was always a chinese food person and didn't mind travelling for a good feed , now we have found this place its grand and only around the corner and a little from where we are and the food yes yes yes yes and even a bit more yes.merchant society has certainly done its home work from the chefs and there assistants belt out some grand food haven't eaten everything off the menu half way through it but some weekends we go there I have my 4 or 5 fav's that we order each time then other weekends we mix it up a bit and hard to believe haven't had a bad meal yet and there is plenty on the plate to tuck into , go the cookers hats off to ya , the waitresses on the ball if there anything they cant answer its out to the chefs to find out so they don't mislead you and me personally that's what I like no saying o ye its got this or that or don't really care .Even the manager don't mind getting his hands dirty taking orders cleaning up seeing everything is to your liking , and the thing that blew us out the water after paying ready to leave the manager and waitresses are waiting at the door to wish you good bye thanks for coming hope your time here was enjoyable and hope to see you in the future not only us all the guests , and do yourself a big favour and go there and see if you time there was as good as ours or better .

We enjoyed discovering the good food and excellent service at this establishment, through a voucher offer. The beef rendang was definitely the standout for us though we really enjoyed the roti roll (with TLC, so cute) and soft shell crab entres too. We plan to return to try some of the other dishes on the menu that weren't included in the voucher deal. Servings were generous so we only ordered rice as an extra.

Last night my partner and I decided to have a date night at Merchant Society. It was easily locatable and there was heaps of parking out the front.
When we walked in, the atmosphere was a little stale. Only three out of the 20 tables had patrons on them, and so the staff were fussing around the full tables a little too much.
We ordered the roti roller and San Choi bou for entrée and the chicken with cashews and sizzling beef for main, along with a bottle of wine.
Food was tasty, but had wayyyy too much onion in all dishes!
I was the only one drinking the wine, so obviously didn't finish the bottle. When we went to take it home and asked for the screw lid, we were told that she had thrown the lid out and her boss told her she wasn't to let people take unfinished bottles away with them.....even though they have paid for the bottle.
I had been really please with my experience until this point.
It is 100% legal to take home unfinished bottles if they have a lid back on the bottle (I know this because I a) use to work as a waitress and bartender and b) because I was so annoyed that I looked up the law when I got home).
I told the lady how annoyed I was, explained her the law and made her retrieve and wash my bottles lid so I could take it home with me, which she did. I was appalled that her boss told her to scam his customers. This is bad managing!
Food was good, but that certainly put a sour note on the evening.

Delicious! We dined here tonight and enjoyed our meal very much. The soft shell crab entree is really worth trying. Very attentive and dedicated service from the Japanese waitresses - don't understand why since it's Malaysian food, but they have great attitude and always smiling! :) Wonderful. They also constantly asked how our meals were going. The spring rolls for entree ("gold rush") were also quite yummy, and they seem to be homemade too. For mains we had sizzling beef and sweet & sour chicken (such typical dishes I know) and they were fantastic too - plenty of flavour (though probably enhanced by the use of MSG... but then again most Asian restaurants use MSG anyway) and very tasty. I'd love to return for their soft shell crab and dishes like laksa and other Malaysian fare.

I don't normally leave a review - but I must admit for this place I think I need too. Great food, great service and open for lunch and dinner. It is great to see the docklands area in Melbourne grow with quality food outlets that now cater for meals of all hours of the day. The expansive dinner menu coupled with a lunch time menu that is well priced with authentic tasting flavours means this outlet is great for both corporate or quiet lunches. Keep up the good work, the most important factor is that the food has not reduced in quality over the period this outlet has been open

Some great dishes. Right around the corner from work so I've had thier lunch menu a few times and some dishes are hit and miss. If you know what to order then it will be amazing. Went for dinner last night and it was out of this world. The far more expansive menu had some dishes that aren't available for express lunch. Would recommend the beef randang, 'twice is nice' (twice cooked pork) and most importantly the entree soft shell crab - generous portion and best I've had.

Clean fresh food. Great service.. Wasn't sure what to expect with a very broad menu. Shared a few dishes between 3 and everything was great. Very clean and fresh, will be visiting again.

Visiting Kiwi Tries the Kai Ka Pow with Rice. I'm visiting Melb from Auckland. Went sight seeing in Docklands and came across this gorgeous restaurant. I am very selective about eating at Asian restaurants as MSG and me don't gel. This place was so busy, so had to go in for a meal. I think I ordered the Kai Ka Pow with rice and requested no MSG. They said they don't use it in any of their dishes? I was shocked but thankful. The bits of chicken on top of the rice was soo yummy. I could smell the fresh coriander from other dishes... so beautiful. I've definitely noted you guys for my next visit. Mwah!
Shel
I'm suspecting this place for my first ever msg headache & my tongue has felt sour ever since we had lunch there today (now 8pm). The MS Chicken sauce was average, meat was fatty, the 3 small bits of crinkle cut carrot (what the) were cold and crunchy, so I didn't bother with the 2 broc florets... Yes it was busy and yes we had a big table booking but meals took 40mins to come and we'd preordered everything. Staff are difficult to understand.
Rendang looked pretty ok, the wine list is quite decent.

The Roti Roller is the bomb!. Went to lunch at this place last week. Very nice joint. I might even describe it at classy. I ordered the roti roller. Man, did it hit the spot. I'm so hungry right now, I could smash another one right now. Great Food. Thanks

A bonus for Docklands. Great restaurant excellent service, freshest and tastiest food in Docklands, every dish I have had has been excellent, the barramundi, pork, chicken, soft shell crab and many other dishes are the best I have had, we make a point off eating here at least once a week, drinks are cold, wine list good and all reasonably priced. My favorite restaurant in Docklands. Keep up the good work Charles and staff.

Amazing Service and Delicious Food. I was welcomed with the warm smiles of the staff and was seated with promptness. I was then attended to quickly, there staff assisted me in making a decision as there was so much to choose from. The food arrived shortly, it was made to order with no compromise in quality or quantity. I ordered a glass of their red to go with my meal and it complimented it perfectly.

During my meal i was greeted by the owner of the establishment. He was funny and gave me a overview of the restaurant . Overall experience 10/10. If you are in Docklands and are looking for a great lunch or an awesome evening with friends and amazing food Merchant Society is the place to be.

Thumbs down. Too much rice and not enough meat and vegetables. There are far better alternatives in docklands.

Dont like it. Got a takeaway, there is lots of steam rice and only a little bit of meat. also i only stay in the restaurant for 5 min but now I got a horrbile oilly smell on my coat.
