Review Hella Good - Melbourne

Rachel Kapsalakis
A great place to visit in Chadstone shopping centre if you're craving souvlaki! The staff are polite and helpful and the premises neat, clean and tidy. The meat is cooked over charcoals and super tender but lacks the flavour I seek in gyro meat. That said, it was still very nice, and the chips were to die for and very reasonably priced. The chips have a lemon pepper seasoning on them that make them so morish. I wish the meat had as much flavour! I lovely lunch, and I'll definitely be back for the chips!

Tried the HSP mixed pack, was quite good. Enjoyed the crispy chips which had a lovely slight vinegary flavour to them. The lamb was alright but chicken was quite nice, tender & juicy. The pita bread was also soft and fluffy

Finally a decent souvlaki at Chaddy. Loads of chicken and salad, loved it!!

Disappointed with my order, I got a Harvey souvlaki with chips, the lamb was way to chewy with barely any taste but I must say the chicken was the highlight of the meal. There was also way to much lettuce and sauce at the start of the souv leaving the rest of it to just be meat. The bread they used was thin, dry and way to crispy. I was also disappointed with there chips which were very crispy and had a sour seasoning.

Fast and delicious, with proper gyro roast. Delicious fries seasoning. The HSP size is decent. It's also open until late, which is a plus.

Great quality lamb, nice crispy hot chips, good portion. Simple food made well. No photo, ate too quickly, too good Will be coming back here šŸ‘šŸ»

Got a large serving of lamb/meat in a container, a lamb souvlaki with extra meat, a couple of drinks & a large serving of tzatziki.. everything was delicious! I have no complaints. Please bear in mind that there is only seating outside & it is minimal. Staff were quite friendly. I will definitely be back again soon if I am nearby. Everything was reasonably priced with respect to food quality & freshness.. at this point I would recommend this place to people!

This is the first Certified GF establishment Iā€™ve eaten at and I found it by happenchance. The pure joy as a Coeliac knowing that everything I ordered was GF created an energy Iā€™ve never experienced. Which I had again moments later while eating the most amazing souvlaki and hot chips! Granted my lack of souvlaki experience (first Iā€™ve eaten since moving to Victoria), the serious respect of ingredients is felt from opening up its bag. This is a must for everyone to experience. Thank you so much!

Harvey Souvlaki Combo (Marinated Lamb & Chicken in Pita & Chips)! This meal was absolutely INCREDIBLE (the salt on the chips was heavenly and such a generous serve of that delicious marinated meat)

Itā€™s been quite a few weeks since weā€™ve had any delicious food like this! Weā€™ve been hibernating at home and cooking for ourselves waiting for the day we can visit our beautiful Melbourne restaurants again. BUT itā€™s time to accept the ā€œnew normalā€ and we started in the best way possible - GREEK FOOD!!!

Even though this will never replace my love of dining out at restaurants, there was something special about plating up at home and enjoying some delicious food from our house (my home cooked meals arenā€™t quite at this same level haha)!

Weā€™re really very lucky to be in a position where we can still get delicious food in these difficult times, which is certainly not a given around the world at the moment! Perspective is a wonderful thing and I canā€™t wait to support more of my amazing local restaurants in the weeks to come!

We had vegetarian souvlakis and some chips, the souvlakis were pretty good, there was not that much flavour though, the chips were great, nice and crunchy and a good serving size.

As a lover of sister restaurant stalactites, it was about time to check out Hella Good! Arrived with souvlaki in mind but after seeing the HSP on the menu o couldnā€™t pass it up.
Price point is mid but the serving was large with a generous amount of meat. I was also surprised to find some pita at the bottom! Could have done with a little more sauce, and I added the chili sauce from my own stash.

Will definitely be back to try the classic souvlaki!

This place is hella good. What I love:
1. Located smack in front of flinders street station, which makes it a convenient meal option
2. Very small but cute shopfront. Looks cleaner compared to neighbouring stores
3. Chicken souvlaki ($13) was not the cheapest lunch option, but very filling. Unlike some places, the chicken meat was tender, making this a very enjoyable meal. They were also very generous with meat yay! It was a bit cold when I ate it despite only walking 10 mins. I recommend for you to eat there
4. They have a stamp card. Order 5 and you get free fries. Order 10 and you get a free souv
5. Girl manning the counter is very mechanical and efficient haha. sheā€™s so quick and no different from a mcd automated counter

Objectively speaking, Iā€™ve had better souvs where the souvlaki meat is packed with greater herby flavour and the fries are crunchier. Having said that, hella good is definitely ideal for a quick Greek meal in cbd!

Actually comparable to their sister restaurant, Stalactites. Once I found out that Hella Good is a sister branch, I held the Stalactites standard and truth be told, it is reasonable just as good.

The pita is cut into smaller pieces which I definitely appreciate, the dips are significantly more than usual, the chicken is grilled and cut well. If someone gave me Hella Goodā€™s food and put it at Stalactiteā€™s extra $10, I wouldā€™ve been completely fooled.

Overall, I think that Hella Good is just as amazing as Stalactites and the fact that they have a discount on Deliveroo makes it all the more better!
The Melb Foodie
It was nice simple food! Very well priced and portion sizes were generous. They don't skimp on the meat or on the tazeki either, staff were helpful and friendly. The pita is very well made and the seasoning on the chips was very unique and was the best seasoning I've ever had on chips. I can guess it had lime powder on it.

I got a chicken souvlaki mixed souvlaki, capsicum dip, chips and bakalavah

The chicken one was amazing
However don't get the lamb or mixed as the lamb was very very dry and inedible, the rest of the good was worth it even with the one distapointment I will be going back.
Connie
I tried the pita and tzatiziki and the dip was so punchy !! There were so much garlic flavour and everything was just really well balanced. The pita was super soft too šŸ‘ŒšŸ¼ enjoyed every bite
Whalesfoodadventure
Got the vegan souvlaki, greek salad and hot chips. Really good vegan souvlaki with hummus. The greek salad was okay nothing special. The hot chips were crispy and had nice seasoning.

$$ - ordered Hella Good Combo (lamb souvlaki)

Love!! The fries were amazing, with a hint of lime. The souvlaki was decent, although I would have enjoyed it a lot more if they added a little more tzatziki sauce, and mixed the vegetables with the meat instead of them being divided into two... wasnā€™t really a fan of biting into *just* lettuce. Needs some better seating too but other than that, I would go again!

Hella Gluten Free YUM!!!

If you want to feel like a normal pedestrian once more, donā€™t forget to stop by this outlet! I never thought I would be able to get regular street food again, let alone a SOUVLAKI!! With delish GF Pita, aye!

Donā€™t be fooled by its typical trendy gluten-zone storefront, Hella Good is Coeliac Association Accredited meaning that us little coeliacs can dine with peace of mind (something that we all know is practically a priceless experience). They donā€™t put up any signs about their accreditation either, but I was informed of this gem via Coeliac Australia and if you ask the friendly man behind the counter, heā€™ll tell you all about it!

Gonna be eating a lot more gf souvs in the days to come~

Recently, I shared my experience at Stalactites which has been newly accredited. In that article, I mentioned that the same family owns another business. Another business that was also accredited. Hella Good is a takeaway souvlaki shop situated right near Flinders street station. Which is just perfect for grabbing on the way to work or university. Actually, I really wish they were there when I was in uni. Their address is 7 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne which is also right outside the route 57, 59 and 19 tram stop.

Tried this once when visiting Melbourne for a business. I ordered Plato, and it was so delicious. Recommended eats and it's no expensive. See my star to know how was its taste

Came with a friend for lunch, got a mixed souvlaki, small boxer with extra pita and a side of chips. Food overall was delicious and very filling šŸ‘Œ would definitely go back again.

Hella good is definitely hella good. Iā€™ve tried hella good on multiple occasions. Well priced, decent servings, fresh and good quality meals. Would definitely recommend.
Aryan K
Extremely over priced for what they have to offer. The bread was small and barely filling. Veggies were not fresh either.

Would not recommend.
Some Bunee Loves Food
Got a lamb souvlaki and hot chips. Was OK as the tzatziki sauce was a bit too much and too sour. The pita bread was nice though. Good for a quick dinner.
Custardbun
Busy at lunchtime, in a cruddy end of town (near flinders st station). But worth making the trek as their lamb is tasty and cooked to perfection! I had the HSP and the accompanying tzatziki and chips were delicious. Iā€™ll be back.
Good Food Good Mood
I was invited back to Hella Good yesterday and while inflation has hit now making the combo $16 not $15 it certainly remains super yummy. This time I decided on the snack pack given it comprised all the delicious elements I enjoyed last time; those perfectly seasoned chips, soft warm pita, dip and meat.

Iā€™m happy to report it did not disappoint. This is your one stop shop for all things tasty and convenient, located right by flinders st station

Original review
I was delighted to be invited to try Hella Good a newish takeaway souvlaki joint given I have eaten at Stalacites and this is their fast food equivalent. It worked out perfectly as I was going to the comedy festival so didnā€™t have time for a lengthy dinner.

I envisage hungry commuters en route home souva in hand as soon as they realise this place is here. Super reasonably priced and extremely generous portions you can get a $15 combo involving souvlaki chips and a drink. The chips were quite simply the best Iā€™ve ever had.

The flavour was insanely delicious and the bag seemed to be never ending no matter how many I shovelled in my mouth. The dip and bread was also quite yummy, and when your talking value a certain souvlaki competitor whoā€™s name starts with George charges $15 for their souva alone!

The baklava rounded out the meal nicely, there isnā€™t a lot of seating being designed as a casual takeaway store but there is room for a quick bite. Go try the chips they make life worth living

We came into Hella Good the other day for some souvlaki as it so conveniently located next to Flinders and also sister restaurant to the famous Stalactites. We really liked how they had a lot of options for someone who just wanted a cheat meal or a quick meal that was also healthier. We opted for the hella snack pack and a mixed lamb and chicken souvlaki with extra feta ( this was quick generous as they give you two large long pieces of feta ) . The snack pack was also very generous and the meat was very juicy and tender, the chips underneath was well seasoned too.

Thanks for having us

I really love the HSP from Hella Good. It taste really delicious and nice. But it will be better if they have a lot of option for the sauce. I like BBQ sauce with HSP which taste really good. Overall, its nice and worth to try :)
Tj Peco
Such a convenient spot for when you want to grab something for the commute home. Great filling to bread ratio that doesnā€™t leave a mess down the bottom of the wrapper. Their HSP goes really well with a side of baklava fingers!

The ceiling pays homage to Stalactites at this sister restaurant which caters mainly to the grab on go take away crowd. There is a small share table for those who want to eat in and the menu is good quality old school souvlaki which werenā€™t padded out with chips like many other spots and came filled with lamb, chicken, mixed or vegetarian. There were tasty salads and gluten free options as well as some tempting desserts but today we grabbed the $16 souvlaki combos to eat in.

I always go for mixed and todayā€™s didnā€™t disappoint with juicy lamb and chicken but the surprising stand out for me was the seasoning on their chips. If anything try them. Citrus and herbs make these one of the best chips Iā€™ve had in recent times.

Good to know there is a tasty souvlaki option at this end of town.

Thanks so much for inviting us in

This was the worst place I have ever eaten!!! I ordered a mixed naked souvlaki and firstly they only gave me lettuce in the salad, no tomato or onion. Secondly the lettuce was frozen with chunks of ice in it and when I showed the employee he didnā€™t even apologise or offer to replace it! The lamb was hard and tough like it was old and had been cut hours ago and the chicken tasted weird. Here I am the next day with food poisoning, surprise surprise! I am extremely disappointed as it was quite expensive and totally not worth the money!

2.5 Stars āļø

Deliveroo had 30% off Hella Good on Wednesdays for selected products so I decided to try them. A more casual offshoot of stalactites, this place offered HSP, gyros and meat platter most likely to drunken ravelers on the corner of Elizabeth and Flinders St at night.

For a Wednesday lunch though, the food offering wasnā€™t that great. I ordered a mixed (chicken and lamb) Plato, which is a carb free meat platter with salad and chips. Hubby had a HSP with chicken.

The HSP was served with one measly pita thatā€™s at the bottom of the chips, soaking up all the oil. The chicken was tender and flavorful though and the chips were nice.

My mixed Plato could have been quite nice, but the lamb was terribly dry. I was so glad I ordered a mixed so I also got the chicken which was good. I simply couldnā€™t eat the lamb. Once again the chips were good and the salad really cuts the fattiness of the dish. The salad was kinda fresh but nothing spectacular. Would I pay full price for my dish? Mmmm maybe, but I will definitely consider ordering the Plato for 30% off again, this time with just chicken.

Okay place to get souvlaki. Generous portion and it was quite tasty. So what's the downside? The meat was quite dry especially the lamb. It maybe just my luck, but hopefully they can make this better next time. I also slightly dislike the bread, it was a bit tougher than average. This place also has a very limited space to dine in. But oh well that's okay I guess given the shop is small.
St!nger
Nice little take away shop near Flinders Street station that is often really busy during the week. The souvlakis are nice but aren't anything spectacular, they would probably taste great if you were drunk late at night though!
Hungry Little Dinosaur
Not bad for $12! Got a decent sized lamb souvlaki which definitely hit the spot, not a lot of gristle and no burnt charred bits like stalactites. I love stalactites but itā€™s just too much grease and dry charred bits. Will definitely return but was slightly confused by the man who walked in and abused the staff and opened up the till like a piggy bank.
Gastrology
ocated at 7 Elizabeth Street Melbourne, Hella Good is the little sister of Stalactites, a Melbourne institution for Greek food. Hella Good is all about fresh, tasty souvlakiā€™s in a quick service store.
JW
If you try anything here, I would highly recommend the chips; such incredible flavour and seasoning! The hommus is also standout from word on the street. The Plato (naked souvlaki) was a little underwhelming and demonstrated quite a bit of chewy fat to the meat and a basic lettuce "salad" situation that was hella average. Lacked a bit of flavour and pizzazz, I would advise against.

Very messy meal, I wonder how people do it with the takeaways. I clearly need a big table and a lot of tissues šŸ˜„.

Anyway, I ordered chicken and lamb souvlaki, but the cashier label our orders wrong. The meat was dry, although they had a good salty flavor. I wish there's more sauce in there too.
Bitten Fingers
Made on the spot when ordering so it's a not a souva that's been sitting there for a while. Very tasty tzatziki. Good to have with a chicken / lamb combo
Eat_today_diet_tomorrow
Hella good is a small Greek fast food store. Definitely perfect grab and go. We got a chance to try the HSP and the boxer, which are similar to open souvlaki. The lamb and chicken meat was really good and went well with the garlic sauce.

Would definitely come back!
Christina
This place has always been outstanding! Souvlaki is super delicious and cooked to perfection. The chips have a slight lemon taste and you cant stop eating them. Always fresh and customer service is exceptional. Great team of people!
Adam Scarf
This is a super convenient place to grab a gyro. I would recommend swapping out the tzatziki that comes with the wrap with a less watery sauce such as hommus but overall they are generous with the meat portions so Hella Good is great value for money.
Mustard
Not much seating for this establishment of famed Stalactites. Got their Hella Good combo which comprises of a souvlaki, chips and drink. Hella good deal.

Souvlaki felt smaller than its counterpart which is fine because it came with some damn tasty chips, seasoned with lemon and herbs. Lamb was really juicy and not that fatty (and not that oily) but the combination of fillings doesn't particularly excite me that much. Much prefer my souvlaki without the shredded lettuce but with chips and a fluffier pita, I guess that's one way to eat my greens.

I got takeaway and the food traveled decently. Solid spot.

I havenā€™t eaten a traditional ā€œAustralianā€ lamb souvlaki for a while and this was a nice reminder of what I had been missing out on. By Australian I mean lamb with lettuce and Tzatziki which isnā€™t what is served in Greece traditionally. The chips were by far some of the best Iā€™ve tried in 5 or so years. Do come by and try the chips at least
Foodies.and.Coe
Awesome souvlakis but chips are the highlight! They are awesome, the herbs with a lemon seasoning are on point šŸ˜šŸ˜ Friendly service and quick šŸ‘Œ

We had snack packs .. one with chicken and lamb the other one is lamb only. The portion is very generous. Such a good value for money. Both meat are juicy and well marinated. The lamb has its bits of fats here and there which is good. The chicken cracking delicious. However it is way too salty to our taste (even when we wrap it with pita bread and tzatziki) and leave us extremely thirsty after the meal. Seasoning of fried is good and doesnā€™t get soggy even when after 20mins. Good tzatziki very refreshing and balance of flavours.

Bruhhhhhh the best souvlaki and chips in town imma die for this lamb souvlaki and the chips is bomb!! This place is sickkkkkkk šŸ¤™šŸ» affordable as well
Sweet And Sour Fork
The souvlakis are, of course, the main act. They stick to the classics here, with only 4 options on the menu ā€“ chicken, lamb, mixed, and a vegetarian option thrown in for good measure. The lamb souvlaki was called the Arnie ($11), which frankly was fairly disappointing. Although the salad was fresh, the lamb was dry and bland, and the pita bread had nothing on the pillowy goodness found at Jimmy Grants. The Kotter ($11) fared a lot better, swapping the subpar lamb for juicy pieces of herbed chicken, and was much more satisfying as a result.

Updated review for September 2018

A great option for a quick takeaway on your lunch break. Ā We tried the Plato, mixed lamb and chicken Open Souvlaki and a pita wrap chicken souvlaki in a Hella Good combo with yummy chips and a drink ($16). Ā The meat was very flavoursome, but this is no surprise, being the little sister of Melbourne Institution Stalactites. Ā We also had the opportunity to try the delicious Baklava. Ā It was spot on! Ā Ā Thanks for the invite. Ā We will no doubt be back! Ā

--------------

Heading off after work to enjoy the Australian open wanted to get something quick but tasty to eat, so opted for good old fashioned Souvlaki and chips.

We found this very cosy hole in the wall which can be missed but given it is related to Stalicites, my other favourite place to eat I was sure I could not go wrong! We noted that this was more of a take away offer but we managed to happily dine on our meal at the one and only bar table šŸ˜‹.

We enjoyed the lamb souvlaki, chips and drink meal for $15 and the Hella snack pack with lamb, pita and hot chips. The portions were very generous but the let down was the tzatziki sauce lacked the lemon acidity.

The service was amazing and as we dined in the staff were all very friendly and helpful.

I ordered the mixed chicken and lamb kebab via uber eats and I was impressed that the business name did not disappoint with their product. It was real DELICIOUS!! Tasty, fresh and not oily and crap, basically.
Food
This was my first time in a long time having Greek food so Iā€™m not sure about the flavours of it so my review may be flawed.

Anyhow, Iā€™ll begin with the good points. Great prices, generous servings. $15 for a souvlaki AND chips AND a drink... what a steal. Not to mention they pack the souvlaki with lots of meat and the chips are larger than what youā€™d expect from a small size. The chips are so well-seasoned, they tasted delicious. Everything was beautifully cooked and so fresh, made on the spot. I only have a bone to pick with the balance of flavours. There was a looottt of sauce which overpowered the whole wrap and made it really heavy. After eating half I felt like I just ate a meal at KFC. The flavours of the meat wasnā€™t allowed to shine through and the vegetables were non-existent. However, I still finished the wrap and was left full and happy. Iā€™d definitely come back for a quick bite.

Love the naked souvlaki, I always go for a mix of chicken and lamb. It's fresh, super tasty and generous sizings that leave extras for later! Good value for money.

Was super tasty with big serving sizes and great meat. I have been to many Greek restaurants and this is my favourite by far. Good pricing and a nice small store.

With a Shawn Mendes concert looming, we suddenly craved some nice meats and souvlakis. With Zomato at our disposal we searched places for the stunning Greek cuisine and thankfully stumbled across Hella Good. With the menu offering meat only dishes, chips, and dips we knew that this establishment had to be the one to cater to our cravings. With reviews also claiming this was the Sister restaurant of Stalactites, high expectations were set in motion.

Upon arrival, we realised that the establishment was more of a takeaway venue as opposed to a dine in like we had thought. Nonetheless there were still limited seats and we were happy to dine in. Like most Greek establishments, service was welcoming and we felt like genuinely valued customers. Today we opted for the Chicken box, large chips and a Tzaziki Dip all for an outstanding $27 in total. I know what you are thinking. What kind of dinner is that?! Well you know what? This meal SOUVED our cravings entirely. To say it was satisfying is an understatement. With such a reputation to uphold with Stalactites, Hella Good match them in every way. From the delicious, juicy, meat that is a quality of such establishment, to the well cooked chips and amazing dip, we were left very satisfied. Everything was enjoyable and definitely upheld the title of a takeaway Stalactites.

We cannot wait to return perhaps after a night out in town, or even for dinner or a break from work. We highly recommend Hella Good for authentic, delicious meats and Greek cuisine!

Food: 4/5
Service: 4/5
Value: 5/5
Ambience: N/A

Overall: 4/5

I grabbed a combo through Uber Eats and it was pretty amazing! The chips are really good, the seasoning is lovely! I was impressed at the quality overall and even more so given it had to travel on the back of a Frenchmanā€™s bike!
Dimsumforone
Ratio Decidendi: The portion sizes here are ā€œhella goodā€. The $15 combo nets you a souvlaki, drink and supposedly ā€˜smallā€™ chips which I dare say most will struggle to finish. So big ticks for generosity and value, and letā€™s be honest ā€“ you canā€™t be satisfied if youā€™re not full.
Lachlan Grant
Really great meal! The HSP and mix kebab are A+++. The HSP comes with Pita bread which is brilliant! The staff are very friendly and provide quick service which is required when trying to have a quick bite before catching a train from Flinders Street.
SatieinMelb
Food quality is quite consistent to its older sister Stalactites. Service was prompt and friendly. Good value for money once you can get a souvlaki, small fries and any choice of drink for $15. Will be back for sure whenever I'm after a quick bite. I just wonder how big is their big size fries because the small one was huge!

This new takeway/fast food outlet is owned by the same family that owns Stalactites, one of Melbourne's well established Greek restaurants. It's in a really convenient location right opposite the Flinders Street Station. We thought that the lamb was delicious - it was very good quality and decent value for money.
