Review The Emerald Elephant - Melbourne

Dianne Woodman
This place is sooo good. Price, service and great tasting food. I've been eating here for years and always feel the love!!! The owners are real respectful and the atmosphere most welcoming. Food always fresh and a good serving. It's so hard to find good food at this price. Today's lunch I had soup $1 and a noodle dish with chicken and vegetables $13.50. I recommend you give it a try. Just a gem in Port Melbourne.

My partner and I uber eats from here tonight because the first time we had it in person was delicious, and we weren’t surprised when it was just as good the second time! The meal was really hot and fresh, great flavours - certainly my favourite Thai restaurant! Highly recommend the Green curry, Pad Satay sauce and coconut rice!

There aren't many businesses I go out of my way to locate their pages online to leave a review, however The Emerald Elephant is simply WOW! The freshest and tastiest Thai we've found in Melbourne, brings back fond memories of Thailand local food. Amazing food, amazing service, a must!

Ordered a few dishes for delivery, had the fish cakes, green curry, papaya salad, fried spare ribs, and pad thai. Ordered a dessert also, but despite the order being ‘accepted’, the dessert wasn’t available. The dishes were generally okay, pad thai and fish cakes were probably the best ones (the fish cake dip was really good!). The rest were very average, the spare ribs were not as flavourful as expected, the papaya salad lacked flavour complexities - sour was all I tasted.

I particularly enjoyed the vegetarian noodle dish I got and found it delicious and flavoursome.

Service was a little slow and the table water tasted like plastic. Amazing quality food though and great value for money.

Delicious & Authentic That food. One of the top thai food spots for sure

The best Thai iv ever had. Green chicken curry 10/10, coconut rice 10/10, pad Thai 10/10. Prawn spring rolls 10/10. Great prices and service

A family-style place with a cosy atmosphere and delicious food. We tried yellow curry beef with coconut rice and tom yum fried glass noodles. Loved everything especially the coconut rice which has a rich coconut flavour and right amount of sweetness. The curry and glass noodles were flavorsome as well. Also impressed by the variety of options on the menu, and plenty of vegetarian options. We are looking forward to coming back again

Date night dinner. Our first time here but we never steer from the tried and true classics of massaman and pad thai (although we do occasionally mix it up with pad see ew). Not much going on atmosphere wise but decent prices and delicious flavours and aromas. Not the easiest to park on busy Bay st but they do have the option of takeaway. Very authentic fish cakes took

The Emerald Elephant is my local Thai restaurant and has been for some years now. Well positioned on Bay Street with indoor and outdoor seating, this is a must try. The food is always amazing with equally as good service. Plenty of vegetarian options available and is well priced. They also deliver. Just the best.

Dined here Sunday night with a friend nice meals and service. The fish cakes were delish. With a great dipping sauce. Enjoyed the crispy pork with chilli and broccoli. A tasty Though not outstanding dish. Red curry duck was very nice. Good service reasonable prices.
Stopped by for a quick bite and had the fish cakes, a red chicken curry with rice, and the pad see ew. The fish cakes were okay, but tasted like they were microwave zapped. The red curry was soooooo watery - it was gross. The pad see ew was not great either. The service was friendly and warm, just a shame the food was so sub standard.

I've been twice to this place for dinner and value for money is good. There are better Thai restaurants out there but this is a good option of you can't be bothered to drive further. My only complaint is last time we visited they clearly had a lot of people coming earlier and plenty of online orders to work on, as a result all tables were filled with dirty dishes and I felt our food was prepared with leftovers from the kitchen. The first time was nice but I won't take the risk again.

One of the best value meals you will get in Port Melbourne. It's worth coming for a meal just to have their rice paper rolls. Good for eat in or takeaway.

Great Thai food! Anything I order is always delicious and great for an easy meal. Always my 'Go To' Thai place when I am after an easy take away dinner. Thanks!

Fantastic food always a pleasure to eat in at lunch with work colleagues. I was shocked to read the reviews for this place because of how often Ive been coming here for Thai.

My colleagues and I continue to come here for lunch and is our preferred Thai Restaurant on Bay St in comparison to the many others in the vicinity.

Service has always been fast and prompt and the food has continued to be delicious and fresh, full of aroma.

I have never ordered delivery from here before so that may also be why my experience is different to others.

If you want a nice, cheap Thai place that offers a quick lunch services in a friendly restaurant environment, it is worth considering a trip to Emerald Thai!

Pathetic delivery. We ordered a "serve" of satay chicken, which turned out to be two skewers and about 2 pieces of your standard tip top white bread quartered. Perhaps if they had given us roti instead I wouldn't be as displeased, but serving white bread as a dish is taking the piss. Pad Thai was horribly disappointing; flavourless and seemingly missing most of the ingredients you would expect. We ordered coconut rice, but received standard white rice. Its as if the owners of this restaurant are not aware of the abundance of Thai restaurants in Melbourne - this shop is either a front for a crack den or is run by incompetent, lazy Aussies. Don't waste your time, and don't waste your money. Ignore the rating completely.

Horrible Stale food. I have just had the worst dinner that I have had in some time and just felt compelled to write a review. The order was wrong, forgot our spring rolls, the salad was at least 2 days old soggy and tasteless, the portioning was tiny..all round a massive let down.
Don't waste your time or money.
Worst Thai I have had in my life!!!!

Horrible food. This place is dirty and stinky and the food is just wrong i mean its not only bad but the recipes are wrong, i ordered Singapore noodles and they gave me the dry instant noodles from the supermarket mixed with a bit of chicken and yucky veggies no sauce no curry nothing mixed with it and that's why its always empty please save your money and don't go there.
Jenny
Always good for take away. Live the yellow curry and massaman beef!
Tom
Curry was watery and tasteless and my girlfriends beef stir fry had ventricles in the meat. Don't waste your money or your time. This place has put me off eating out for a while

Slow, allow plenty of time. Popped in for a quick meal, with only an hour 15 to spare. First to arrive at 5.45, would have ordered within 5 mins if waitress had come back. Coffee machine broken (again). Entree's took 20 minutes, prawn spring roll & chicken curry puff very nice, golden patties were in little cups? ok.

My Beef Pad Thai main arrived about 20 mins after that, nice flavour but absolutely NO BEEF. By the time I realised I hadn't found any, I wasn't sending it back cause I was STARVING and not prepared to wait again. When I pointed out the lack of beef, she was fully aware of the stuff up and graciously gave me $1 off, bringing it back to the price of vegetarian......

As we waited for my partner's crispy pork, we watched at least 10 dishes come out to people who arrived and ordered after us. Luckily my partner ate some of mine because his arrived 30 minutes after mine was finished. By then we only had 5 minutes before we had to go and he left a fair bit of his (average) meal.

This isn't a place with much ambience where you want to spend hours, last night it was cold & draughty. It's cheap, ok meals, but they take so long! On previous visits, we've only had 1 main each and you're pushing it to get out in an hour. Can't afford time wise to eat here again, again, they always make us late!

Top Shelf Tom Yum. I live near Bay St and this is one of the restaurants I frequent. The food is consistently very good especially the Tom Yum soup. It's really outstanding!
Jess
I have been here a number of times and while the overly small entrees used to annoy me the food was generally good. Unfortunately the last few times I have eaten here the food has been awful! Cold, bland and the rice tasted three days old! Never coming back again!
Brittany
Disappointment. We read the good reviews and gave this place a shot. What a let down. Tiniest portions I've ever had - 4 small bits of chicken and a few vegetables. The pad thai was kid sized. Definitely no value for the money and the taste was average. The thai restaurant down the street is much better value and more flavourful...we'll stick with others from now on.

Ruined our night. Made an order at 7:30 for delivery from this restaurant, and they said it would be about 50 mins, which we were okay with. Fast forward an hour, no food. Called to confirm the delivery, and they said their guy was on the way. After several phone calls, 3 hours later they finally reveal to us the order has been declined. We didn't receive any email, or phone call, or SMS to tell us this, and it was by then 10:30PM, and raining heavily outside.

Absolutely unforgivable.

Ordered takeaway from here tonight. Super fast delivery. Ordered chicken with cashews and special sauce as well as satay beef. Satay sauce was massively addictive, beef was a little bit chewy. Chicken and cashew was really nice as well. Will definitely order here again!
Ronan
Lets address the Emerald Elephant in the room! Just had a really nice.....I mean 'rice' takeaway. The rice was put in the same container as the main meal with 70% rice. I thiiiiiiiiiink the main was nice but there wasn't enough there for me to make my mind up.

Nice place for a relatively cheap and quiet meal.

We pre ordered and went there for lunch. The food was ready on time and the service was great. Wouldn't necessarily call it cheap, but it tasted awesome. Nice service, basic decor, definitely recommended.

Beautiful authentic Thai. I've now had the lunch special (meat dish, rice and entree for $12) and had home delivery. The Yellow Curry was rich and creamy, with a strong lemongrass flavor - absolutely beautiful. Tom Yum soup had the depth of flavour you get when in Thailand. Overall, some of the best Thai in Melbourne. P.S. they served their samosa's without any dipping sauce. I was most perplexed and asked where it was. The answer: they have enough flavour that they don't need a sauce. Sceptical, I was proven wrong. Unbelievably yummy as is.

Phenomenal! One of the best eats on Bay Street. Recommend the Pad Prik Sod with beef, and Red Duck Curry. Excellent value for money. Get in! Love it!
Alex
Great little eatery with simple, clean home food. Easy on pocket. Family run place with a good wine list. Quiet atmosphere. Recommended.

Beautiful fresh and delicious cheap but certainly not an indication of the sheer quality A+ a definate top 10

Excellent pandan chicken, rice paper rolls and original Thai fried rice. Everything cooked perfect. Service is a little basic but the food more than made up for it. Wonderful.

For a dish that's special and recommended, I was disappointed.

The cool interior was welcome on the warm day, the place felt clean and tidy if not particularly cutting edge. There were a few other tables occupied and several people came in to pick up takeaway while we were there, but it was an oasis of calm...
