Review Maori Chief Hotel - Melbourne

They show Super Rugby. That's a big plus in this AFL crazy state, and it may be enough to get me back. The beer... A few choices including some NZ options, which is nice. The food... The second round of sausage rolls (not the vegetarian ones) was great!

How good is this for lunch.....this place rocks, food is always outstanding and the service is awesome....thanks for being open again.

Would not accept an official vaccination certificate from the NZ government, as we haven’t an OZ digital one atm. Very aggressive in enforcing “pub policy” is a bad look for a Maori pub not to recognise a NZ government vaccination certificate. Gets you into Australia ok, without quarantine, just not their pub.

They have a great fireplace in the back. Good place to watch sport when it’s on tv

Best pub in South Melbourne. Controversial, but I'm a big fan. Here me out. South Melbourne is full of pubs that just look nice. Fancy wallpaper and menus with puns instead of food names. But what's a fancy looking pub if the food is horrible, the beers on tap are generic, and the service is non existent? The Maori doesn't try to look like the pubs it's competing with. It's just doing its own thing and it's doing it well. Good beer on tap and good pub food on the menu. I wouldn't take a date here, but it's far better than the overpriced, over designed pubs that try harder than I did in high school. Maori isn't trying to impress you, which ironically is what impresses me.

Good food and selection of beers, with friendly staff. A "proper" pub. Supportive of local and emerging musicians as well as catering for patrons who just want to play pool, watch sports or have a beer and chat.

The parmas here are super tasty, and the craft beer options are basic but good. Loses a star because it's a pretty basic pub in terms of ambience, but it's fine for Friday pub lunch and the service is mostly pretty good, and did comes out mostly pretty quickly. Their group dining service could be improved, though.

Nothing that spectacular about this place, however, bar menu was definitely interesting. Some nice options for a parma and almost the usual collection of beer on tap. They do have a pool table and there is often live music. Special meal deals every day.

Went to watch the All Blacks vs Wallabies. It’s a cool pub vibe, but the food was a let down. I got the fish and chips and my fish batter was very over fried it was not nice to eat so I tried to just eat the the fish inside. The chips were the best part and crispy. My partner got the parma and he said it was fine, and my friend got the burger, tried their burger and it was okay. Apart from the food, it was a good pub and we would still come back to enjoy the environment. I’ve seen their food in other’s photos and they have looked fine unfortunately perhaps due to how busy it was mine just didn’t go as normal.

We went to this place for a dinner on Wednesday just because it was close by but it ended up being quite a nice night. They had a live band playing. A nice rooftop bar with a great view. Very friendly staff and good service. And the food was pretty good pub food. We had the porter house steak and the grilled baramundi , both were delicious.

Choice bro!!! Best New Zealand pub around. Love the free pool on Thursday nights. Wanna buy me a beer? I'll be the one owning the table 😜 haha.

This place is Moray St in South Melbourne just one block away from Clarendon st. The place is hidden which means that not many bloggers know about it. I didn't find out about this until one of the Crosbie crew members invited me to their Parma/pub night. Apparently this happens once a month. The place is run by the Kiwis and they do a good selection of wines and imported beers. But seeing as I might be having beer tomorrow night and a burger I thought I might like to keep it low for a while.

Thursday night is $15 steak night and wow what  a deal. Steak is apparently 250g but ours looked bigger. Well cooked, chips were crispy and hot, salad was fine, mushroom gravy had a great strong flavour. Relaxed ambience, definitely a pub where all are welcome. I had a look at the menu, they have a variety of deals Mon-Thurs but even if you don't order the deal everything is very moderately priced. There are so many pubs in South Melbourne, but this one has a particularly welcoming and relaxed atmosphere and judging from the steak meal, the food is great. Recommended.

Of all the parmas on our “To Try” list, I think the Maori Chief has been there the longest, so long I have forgotten how it got there in the first place – part of me thinks it made it there after a Facebook poll asking for suggestions for pubs with good beer gardens, but who knows. Most importantly last night we loaded up the Parma bus and headed to South Melbourne’s Maori Chief Hotel.

Went here for the first time to watch an AB's v Wallabies game, I hadn't heard great things about this place but thought would try it out. We had booked the last table available so clearly they were in for a busy night. My first drink arrived with a massive lip stick stain on the glass, definitely not mine. Secondly due to expecting a busy night they only had a selected menu which was fine, I ordered the steak sandwich but with no tomatoe (allergic) only to be told they couldn't modify the orders tonight because they were so busy. The service provided was very poor. The food took an hour to come out and when it did it was very very average. Noone on the table finished their meals, you would expect cheap pub food at a place like this but what we got was even below that. Probably a great place if you want to watch the game with beers but definitely wouldn't recommend having a meal there on such a busy night.

...This is a proper honest pub, with unexpected beers, lots of bare wood, live music and a pool table ... right in front of the bar. It's the antithesis of the shiny identikit pubs
Burger Friday
Not surprisingly, there was an impressive turn-out of patrons with the outdoor dining area resembling the internet sensation – the Harlem Shake – as it became a fight to secure a table (even without the rugby on!).

The Chief he is! A great local pub, nothing fancy just a welcome smile, a cold beer and a damn good $15 Steak night! The front bar is a decent space with a pool table and Wednesday nights they’ll even get a band in for Parma nights. Out back there are plenty of tables to sit back and enjoy a catch up with friends and when it warms up there is a rooftop apparently – will have to check that out!! On a cold, drizzly Thursday night we drop in for our first visit and we are all starving! The menu is simple, good honest food – squid, spring rolls, sliders for entrees and mains are all the favourites: burger, Parmas, steak sandwich, bangers and mash and plenty more to satisfy. We share the spring rolls and the garlic bread. It looks like it’s just the two people running the bar and the kitchen and they are doing a great job. The spring rolls are really nice. No grease, appear homemade and thoroughly delicious. Garlic bread is suitably aromatic, warm and buttery – perfect! With most entrees less than $14 and generous you can feed the family no probs. So steak night makes life easy, medium rare, porterhouse, chips or veg? Sauce is a couple of bucks extra and the result? Totally worth the money! The steak was beautifully cooked, pink and juicy. Chippies great, salad gorgeous and that sauce? Oh I could dive in it was soooo good! Steak night rocks and there is still dessert to be enjoyed, pub classics tonight are blueberry cheesecake and pancakes! How good is that?! Too cute with scoops of beautiful ice cream, a wedge of rich, creamy cheesecake and cream…. decadently delicious. Old school pancakes, ice cream and cream…. it’s a good job we have the boys there to finish up all these lovely desserts!! Maori is a top spot for a pub dinner and we’ll be back for that steak next week… and the week after!!

Brilliant service and food with a smile!. I love this place, we eat here every Thursday for the excellent $15 steak night, but try not to miss the Wednesday parma night. We always take guests there as it never fails to impress! Andy the bar manager is the perfect host. With a deceptive exterior, it is a surprising welcome inside with wood panelling and a cosy fireplace in winter, but the spring and summer months must be spent upstairs on the rooftop area. Great food, service and ambiance... A proper pub with no pokies!!!! What else could u want!!!!

I had an Aussie Parma it was delicious. I loved that it had ham and bacon on it. The chips were really good too. I'll definitely be going back.

Impressed and then not at all.. So I have been here twice. The first time was awesome, had the dim sims and a burger. Amazing. Second time was awful. Had the dimsims which were nowhere near as good (the sauce was missing completely) and they wrangled something resembling a sandwich burger for me as they were out of pretty much everything else and it was really below par. Not sure if I will risk eating here again but a great place to go for a bevvy and watch the game.

Standard pub food. Don't expect to be blown away but if you are after pub food, this place ticks all the boxes.<br/>It's a bit too "typical football pub" on Friday nights though but good that they have a back dining room away from all the TV screens showing the footy.

Very good. Parmas were cooked to perfection, very good meat(!) and awesome chips..<br/>Took a while until the main arrived, but everyone should remember this is usually a barometer for quality.. at Maori it definitely is!<br/><br/>Would come back every parma-day if it wasn't for the continuing search of awesome parmas around the city :)<br/><br/>For this price on parma-day (15) its huge value! <br/><br/>Definitely recommend that!

Great function room. I was introduced to the Maori by a friend of mine who had his birthday there, the function room/deck set up was brilliant and completely private. The catering was a mixture of healthy sushi rolls, sandwhiches etc as well as your good old deep fried party favourites. I have since been back to the Maori cheif on a night when the Rugby was on, I do not follow Rugby however, I found myself getting involved and excited throughout the game - the atmosphere was amazing.<br/><br/>I am yet to have a pub meal at the venue... I will let you know how I go... Might stay clear of the Schnitzels.

Disappointing. Went to the Maori Chief for a catch up with friends. We ordered 4 meals, 2 of them were parmas which both had to be sent back because they were burnt and one did not have everything as described on the menu. They then informed us that they had run out of burger buns for the burger we ordered...so only one meal out of 4 worked. They did give us a free round of drinks but it would have been better if they tried a little harder with the food.

Good burgers. Pretty cheap and good cheese burgers and normal pretty crispy chips to go with it, nice fresh tap beer. I've enjoyed watching rugby and eating the cheese burgers around 5 times over the last 12months

Perhaps the Chief has changed hands since our last visit ? Very disappointing. Waited 20 minutes for drinks which arrived half way through main course, and on a night with only 3 tables occupied in the dining room. Chicken schnitzels were both burnt. Staff unhelpful. It's sad that what had been a South Melbourne institution has come to this.

Lost it's mojo. Below average pub grub
