Review Daughter In Law - Melbourne

Jacqui Windebank
Last week we enjoyed the food @daughterinnlaw with friends. The food was incredible with the highlights for me being the balls of happiness which tasted as amazing as they looked pretty, the colonel Tao’s cauliflower and the curry dishes. The restaurant is comfortable and well decorated. There is a great selection of cocktails and a self serve beer fridge. The only problem with the drinks being the time it took to order them and have them served. Additionally the wine (not house) ordered came in a carafe to the table so you couldn’t see the bottle of what you were drinking. Unfortunately our visit was not as wonderful as the food was due to terrible service. It was slow and not friendly. They then messed up our bill to end the night. They also don’t have a phone number you can call so the process is very messy and uncertain if you need to change your booking for any reason. If they could lift their service to the same level as the food this restaurant would be fantastic.

Out of lockdown and this is the first place I met friends at to catchup. Great food and there were plenty of it! We had the Tasting Menu and it was really great value. Only comment is, the music was too loud to have a nice conversation without shouting.

Loved this experience and would come back! The atmosphere was great. Loved the decorations and lively vibe. Cocktails were pretty decent. We had the set menu so got to try lots of items, including the curries. Everything was full of flavour and quite unique. The cauliflower and tandoori chicken were stand outs!

Such a great restaurant. It's a remix of Indian meets fine dining. The food is just par excellence. The presentation is a visual delight to the eyes and the ambience of the place is just beautiful. I had the tasting platter which included a mix of everything and would easily fill a person. It's a wonderful place for those who love Indian food but with the essence of fine dining. A strong recommendation.

Came here for the office Christmas lunch which had a fixed menu. The food was very nice I’d have to say. There was plenty of flair, flavour and variety and more than enough food for everyone. The staff tried very hard in testing circumstances. The decor is quirky and quite attractive in an unusual way. Overall price was pretty good, I thought. I’d happily come here again anytime.

This place is the vibe! I went with a group of friends and it was perfect, music on, good vibes, nice drinks and delish food. Also, the decor is so so great. Love the pink vibe and everywhere has something appealing to the eye. Balls of happiness was the start of the night!! With no doubt, it’s a must!! We enjoy ourselves and had a great time. Definitely recommend to my friends. The only issue is that is quite hard to contact them if there’s any change of bookings. Other than that, great great great! C

Pleasantly surprised by this joint! Wasn’t sure what to expect but I really rated the food, drinks and service. We did the feed me menu which was decent and they offered extra naans and curries to ensure we were very full when we left. Would come back!

Visited this place for a team dinner, has a good ambience but feels hurried at times. We had the set menu and well, it was pretty hard set. 1 tiny little piece of appetiser each, full meal and a dessert. We had a couple of members with specific food requirements and the restaurant did well to accommodate them. They have a huge bar menu but a limited food menu. As far as the food goes, I missed the wow factor. I was looking forward to restaurant surprising me with their unauthentic take on the Indian cuisine but that unfortunately did not happen. Adding a flower on top of a golgappa or a puchka does not make it unauthentic for me. Same for a cauliflower dish which tasted exactly like a gobi 65. The chicken tikka was a bit dry and cold on the inside. The papadi chaat was amazing though and so were a few dishes from the mains. Loved the dessert. Overall, didn’t feel like we got the value for money.

i love Indian food & have eaten at a lot of Indian restaurants. i was expecting a taste sensation but really the food was not any better than some of the places I've eaten but it was way over priced. the serving sizes were average. colonel tso's cauliflower could have had the cauliflower cooked a little more. the paneer makhani contained a few firm pieces of paneer where i would expect a soft texture. the punjabi kadhi was, well, pretty ordinary. about 1/2 dozen to 10 small eggplant chips in a dal. the naan basket was about right for the price. it wasn't an awful experience but as stated i was expecting so much more. would i go again. no. not overly tragic but next!

Our first venture out since Covid and this hit the spot. Wonderfully warm service, great tasting menu (excellent value) and The Vegetarian was very well catered for. We'll be back for pizza next time!

Front of house and waiter were rude in general and our choices of food. Food was alright. Very overpriced, single bowl of butter chicken for $30. Watch out for a dodgy trick they'll pull where they offer you tap water or sparkling water (in the sense they are complimentary drinks). We drunk one bottle of sparkling water before they topped it up again. Once paying they charged us $16 for the water. When we questioned them we were told it's sparkling not tap and wouldn't help us at all. No where on the dinner or drinks menu. Other restaurants in the area have previously told us if the water was extra or not instead of hiding it to the end and refusing to cooperate.

Delicious lunch thali options. Curry and naan are freshly made. Service are quick too. Would come back for sure

Best ‘in-authentic’ Indian in Melbourne. These dishes are so full of flavour. Rich, slow cooked curries, and modern takes on traditional street food. Favourites are the dense and silky Aunty Dahl, fragrant prawn curry and the balls of happiness are a serious mouth full of flavour. Oh and the spicy cauliflower is a must try too!

Good ambience and friendly staff. However the food was overpriced and especially for a group of 6+ they had a fixed menu and rate ($55 per person). For a group of 6+ there is no option of Ala carte and you need to stick to their specific tasting menu. Most of the food served were slightly towards sweet and didn’t taste that great. There are lot of better options of Indian restaurant in and around CBD for better price.

Went with a friend for lunch. Had summer thalu, reasonably priced and good portion, you can add naan to the thali if you want.<br/>Good decor and easy to locate. Staff is friendly and its a recommendation to book in advance as this place gets quite busy during popular hours.<br/>A good place to be<br/>Cheers

A bit disappointed after my friends recommended the place
Adi
I was quiet sceptical while trying an Indian place as most of them tend to disappoint. But I should saw this place was amazing. Good food that I will recommend. Naan was the highlight and so was the papdi chat. Although just one little feedback “batata wada is not from south India but is a Mumbai street food”

We booked our dinner at daughter in law, as the restaurant is a self proclaimed "unauthentic Australian Indian" - making me laugh.<br/><br/>Ordered:<br/>🍱 Tasting menu: Chef's selection of a variety of appetizers, curries, naan, rice and dessert ($55.00)<br/><br/>Review:<br/>By the time we got to our main dish, the delicious and expansive thali, my friend and I were incredibly stuffed from the 5 appetizers that came before it!!<br/><br/>Be warned: they do offer oysters as an appetizer but if you can't stomach the thought (like me) they're happy to swap you out for a vegetarian number 😎.<br/><br/>The thali main was easy to eat. It was fun trying to see what matched with which, i.e. does the naan go better with the butter chicken? Maybe the lentils?! Maybe the other curry here...<br/>Papadum was a little too flakey for me and the texture reminded my friend and I of prawn cracker. We were hoping to get the thin snappy flatbread, but getting thin prawn crackers look alike was not a loss.<br/><br/>Looking around, chef's tasting menu seemed to be the most popular choice so I would also recommend you get it if you were coming here.<br/><br/>The interior is super modern, with a projector playing snippets of an Indian drama. Super fun and a great conversation piece. Service was also decent, but they forgot about us for a while as we sat there waiting for our final dessert lol.

Soooo this was disappointing. I looked up the menus online and I was really looking forward to the veggie Thali but sadly it was just... meh. It also differed from what I had read online.<br/><br/>The little dish of chana masala was good but there wasn’t enough variety in just one curry, it came with little dishes of roast pumpkin, rice, riata, a delish popadum and a vile salad.<br/><br/>I really felt it needed another curry, maybe a palak paneer or dhal or something. The salad was bizarre, canned corn with random strawberries and grapes. Not particularly fresh either! <br/><br/>The pumpkin was fairly standard and what can you really say about rice? The naan was really good, but for $18.50 I felt a bit cheated. <br/><br/>Staff could have been friendlier and good luck trying to chat over lunch in this place, for lunch the music is ridiculously loud!

The food was very nice and a good twist on other Indian restaurants. The lack of service almost ruined our night and we almost missed our theatre show. But the food definitely made up for it

We were recommended here by a friend and have to admit the food did not disappoint. We started with beetroot yogurt kebabs and the scallops. The scallops were lovely and delicate but the yogurt kebabs were excellent.<br/><br/>For mains we had the Delhi ka channa and the black lentils with an assortment of breads. The channa which is essentially a chickpea curry with good dose mango powder which gave it that wonderful punch. The black dal was a bit sweet to our liking. <br/><br/>We finished the meal with kulfi and gulab jamun. The desserts were ok would have preferred to see something different then the age old traditional dessert. Overall an excellent meal, attentive service and good quantity. However I would recommend making a booking prior to going.

Has an absolutely delicious dinner at Daughter-in-law. Staff were very friendly and helpful and the food was diverse and full of flavour. We shared the balls of happiness , the scallop ceviche, the trout and tuna crudo, the butter chicken, the zucchini and pomegranate salad and the mixed plate of naan filled with goats, blue and cheddar cheese. I couldn’t fault any of the food. The starters were light and fresh and the curry and the naan was warm and satisfying. There was a bit of a stuff up with our order ( it was forgotten about) but the staff were incredibly apologetic and were very generous when sorting out the mistake.
Adam
A couple of service issues - had to ask multiple times for water, mixed up the drinks order - but that was outweighed by the food! Happy to put it down to a bad night for service.

These are 3 plates of balls of happiness. With only chutney filling. Asked to leave 15 mins prior to reservation end time. Not a good thing to do for people who are in hospitality business. Taste is good but quantity is too less for the price.<br/>

Hello! The name of the restaurant and it’s menu is quite unique in it’s own way but guess the same uniqueness should be maintained in the food taste and hospitality. Cheers!<br/>

Best and authentic ambience but food was not unto the mark. Freshness was missing out of food and some of the things taste stale as well. If only they could really up their quality they could be top in the game.

Wow what a restaurant! We absolutely love Indian food and this place was just amazing.<br/>We opted for the set menu and each dish was incredible and what a journey for the tastebuds and senses. We added a trio of naan which included a blue cheese one and a truffle one, and was fantastic. The drinks also were so well created, they were everything you love about Indian food, in a drink. Highly highly recommend and can’t wait to go back!
Sylvia's POV
Dined at Daughter In Law for dinner with work colleagues.<br/>We had a table booked for 8 people and opted for the Tasting Menu.<br/>Firstly, decor and overall atmosphere was just the right amount of modern and traditional. The music was a tad loud, as we found ourselves yelling to be heard.<br/><br/>Daughter In Law were very accommodating to dietary requests as we had a few different requirements to cater for (including vegan, gluten-free and allergens).<br/>We ordered our drinks first, I had a Watermelon Cooler cocktail. It was very refreshing and mixed well!<br/>We opted for the Tasting Menu as it had a variety of dishes to experience.<br/>First up was the Gol Gappa balls, one bite and they burst in your mouth with yoghurt oozing out with every crunch.<br/>The oysters were flavoured uniquely, but tasted great.<br/>The Colonel Tso's cauliflower dish was basically the vegetarian version of sweet and sour pork; from the batter to the spices- really can't go wrong with that!<br/>The yoghurt croquettes were one of my least favourite appetiser as the flavour gingery(?) was too strong.<br/>The dish that came next really took the cake!! Tandoori chicken! It made everyone wishing there was more than just one piece each to go around. The only slight downside was that we were only provided one spoon to dispense two different sauces (corriander and yoghurt) causing an unpleasant sauce cross-contamination for those who preferred one over the other.<br/>Getting over the sauce anomaly, the chicken was tender and delicious.<br/>As for mains, we were presented with a diverse thali plate with small perfectly portioned of butter chicken, coconut vegetable curry and lamb Rogan Josh.<br/>Served with rice, a papadum and some naan.<br/>This was a great way to showcase different curries offered at the establishment.<br/>The naan was great.<br/>Dessert was a very rich tasting kulfi! Lovely and sweet to top it all off.<br/>I would say the composition of the Tasting Menu was great.<br/>Ultimately, a good experience.<br/><br/>
Little Pink Piggy
My friend and I took our other friend here as a birthday treat. We ordered $200 worth of food. For the most part, it was delicious. Naan was a bit greesy and the pork neck curry and the vindaloo both tasted similar. Too much salt in the vindaloo for sure. We ordered the spare ribs too but they forgot to bring them out. Good experience never the less. If you are hard of hearing, don't go here as it gets very noisy.

Eaten:1. Balls of Happiness - served cold, small crispy ball maybe same diameter as a 20c piece, filled with yoghurt flavoured with mint & cumin.  You are instructed to put the whole thing in your mouth at once (it would probably fall apart if you tried taking smaller bites.  Pretty tasty.<br/>2. Papadi Chaat - described as "the motherland's version of nachos". I do think this description needs to note that this dish is served cold.  It was okay... probably too wet really and probably undersupplied with chaat.<br/>3. Batata Vada - a ball (maybe same size as a tennis ball) of spiced potato.  Looked interesting and was pretty tasty.<br/>4. Palak Paneer - pretty basic spinach/paneer curry.  Not too much flavour.  Not a favourite dish of mine.  I feel that for $22, this should come with some rice (noting that the separate "aged basmati sella rice" was $6!").<br/>5. Beef Short-rib - even though the menu only has this as a singular, I felt like a single rib was too little for the price point.  The plate looked under-filled to me.The rib itself was nice enough, but didn't really have anything special about it.<br/>6. Stuffed Naan.  The description didn't make it clear, but this was three separate (small) naans with different flavourings.  They were okay.<br/>7. Deluxe Thali plate (separate lunch) a nice array of different dishes served by the 1/4 cup.  This means if there's something you really like you don't get enough of it, but it's a decent amount of food and most of it is pretty tasty (although the butter chicken was pretty blah).<br/><br/>Overall, the food is of a good quality, but the price points on a few aren't adhered to by the servings.<br/>Venue itself is very loud - primarily due to loud music being played (which everyone then has to talk over).  The bartender even commented to us that the music was too loud. It also made it difficult to understand our waitress.<br/>Probably a 3.5 in the old scale, but a 3 felt too low.

Looking for great deal lunch during weekdays? This will be the spot! Not to mention, the place is very aesthetic as well. <br/><br/>$15 Thali came with 4 curries with rice and papadum. I added garlic naan as well which was really good. My fav definitely will be the unauthentic butter chicken! Housemade chai and mango lassi are worth to try too. <br/><br/>Will I be back? Surely!

Daughter in Law is fantastic. I booked for four online and we were seated in one of the lux, royal blue velvet booths. The cutlery and glasswear is beautiful and there was a 1960's Bollywood film projected on the back wall. This restaurant is very photogenic. The cocktail list was exotic and different and the food delicious. For first timers I'd recommend getting the Colonel TSO's cauliflower and the Balls of Happiness to start, then some naan pizza, a curry and the beef short ribs to share. The cucumber and fennel salad with yogurt was a nice addition as the cauliflower was quite spicy.

This place is awesome! I celebrated my birthday with 12 others and the large table was a great shape and we could actually all hear each other. As we were a large group, we had to all have the tasting menu for $55 each, which did not disappoint. The food was delicious, different and great value for money. Service was also 10/10! Really friendly staff. Would recommend to anyone, including those with dietary requirements.

The interiors of the place is beautiful and the food is good. However, this place could work on improving the quantity served.
Flying Forward
Interesting take on Indian (or Melbourne-Indian) cuisine, combining flavours and techniques from different regions.<br/><br/>Colonel Tso’s Cauliflower – the florets are lightly battered and fried, covered in a sweet and tangy sauce.<br/><br/>Papadi Chaat – again sweet and tangy, but the dish is very textural with crispy elements throughout the dish.<br/><br/>Thali – with the thali, I had the unauthentic butter chicken which was more creamy and sweet and the lamb curry which was nice and rich. There were only a couple pieces of meat in each portion.<br/><br/>Service was friendly and professional, taking the time to explain the menu.<br/><br/>I like the design of the restaurant, a little bit funky featuring warm colours.
I Have A Reservation
A very disappointing experience, as the food came out very slowly, yet still just lukewarm. The naan was oily and just alright. Definitely not worth the price - head to Red Pepper to satisfy your tummy.
Little Bit Of Everything
Conveniently located in the heart of the cbd , Daughter in Law is a perfect spot for a quick weekend lunch. For lunch they serve Thalia’s you get to choose between Veg or non-veg Thali it got them all in one Thali. Quick service and really friendly staff. They explain to you about each item on the Thali. I have tried both the Thalia’s and my personal favourite is the vegetarian one. Absolutely love their palak paneer. <br/>Beautiful interiors and very well organised seating. I suggest booking a table as it gets pretty packed during lunch time.

We went to daughter-in-law for a weekday office lunch. Luckily had booked a table so didn't need to wait much as the place was buzzing with office workers. Group of 5 and all of us decided to have the non-veg thali with Naan. $15+$3.5 quite decently priced for the location.<br/><br/>Service- Quite attentive eventhough the place was busy. <br/><br/>Ambience- I loved the interiors, the velvet couches, the peacock themed water glasses so was feeling quite positive about the food. <br/><br/>When the thali arrived it was good portions for lunch, an assortment of daal, butter chicken, kadhi, lamb curry, rice, raita & papadum. <br/><br/>One bite into the kadhi & I knew it was only going to go downhill - it wasn't cooked enough and I could taste the rawness. For someone who prides themselves on their kadhi cooking skills I knew instantly it should have been cooked much longer. My colleagues did not know how kadhi was supposed to taste so had no complaints (lol). 1/5 <br/><br/>The lamb curry didn't have any flavour, was quite rubbery to chew and none of us liked it. 1/5 <br/><br/>The dal makhani was again meh and only 2 in the group liked it. 2/5<br/><br/>Butter chicken was the saving grace but I would still rate it a 2 and my colleagues agreed it failed to impress them. 2/5<br/><br/>Rice , raita & naan were fine but it's hard to get the breads wrong! <br/><br/>Overall quite a disappointing experience if you go for good Indian food. They have advertised themselves as Unauthentic Australian Indian food but I think every food needs to be cooked properly and have some flavour. It's a definite 👎🏻👎🏻 for me.

We’d heard a lot of hype about this new place and were staying in the city so went to check it out on a weeknight. It was fully booked so we were seated at the bar and staff were pleasant and I got a cocktail to start which was definitely the standout. Food was nice enough - entrees (balls of happiness and papadi chaat) tasted almost like the food Mum cooks but the mains were a bit disappointing. We got the unauthentic butter chicken and the coconut curry - butter chicken was fairly standard but the coconut curry was not as flavoursome as I expect from Indian restaurant food and I don’t think there was a single chilli in any of our dishes (Except the cocktail!). Overall tasty enough but overpriced for what we got and not the usual bang I expect from Indian food (maybe it’s been toned down because it’s “Australian Indian”). Nice atmosphere and staff though and clearly a popular place so might give it another go if there’s any spicier dishes on offer.
The Hungry Vegan
Walking into daughter in law, you wouldn't think that it was a fusion Indian restaurant. The music and interiors makes it seem like you are om the carribean, but then you see old school indian film clips being projected. An interesting setting that keeps you guessing. <br/><br/>For entree i ordered the 'Colonel Tso's Cauliflower', a take on the traditional indian Gobi Manchurian. I must say, definitely does rival some of the best Gobi i have had so a big tick there!<br/><br/>For mains i had the vegan butter squash, and although tasty, wasn't blown away by the dish or the flavours. I can appreciate that vegan Indian food is difficult, but was expecting more based on the hype of the place. <br/><br/>Although I was feeling like a chai tea (which my fellow diners thoroughly enjoyed) they unfortunately didnt have a dairy free option. <br/><br/>All in all a pleasant experience. But would I go back again? Not 100% convinced.

Delicious food, good variety. Worth revisiting!

Nothing was authentic i would rather say each dish was a bad version of it. Nothing tasted great. Very pricy. Not worth it at all.

3.5 / 5<br/><br/>Daughter In Law has been making quite a buzz on the Restaurant scene in Melbourne. It's been nominated under the Best New Restaurant by Times Out Food Awards, and when you have colleagues raving about it, we couldn't hold back to pay a visit to be told "Sorry, it's difficult to accommodate you, we are fully booked"<br/><br/>That raised our curiosity and hence, we made sure we booked the table. 'Cherry on the Cake' was the Zomato Gold Membership which they are a part of.<br/><br/>Ordered a Litchi - Vodka based Drink and a Rum Based Drink together with Assorted Naan Basket, Goat Curry and Butter Chicken Naan Pizza.<br/><br/>First to arrive with our drinks was th Naan Pizza. Perfectly crisp and delicious to taste. But, reminded us of the similar Pizza one gets back in India, in Dominos. So certainly a disappointment. Overall, overpriced.<br/><br/>Cocktails were simple and quite basic. Presentation top-notch. Overall, overpriced.<br/><br/>Naan, crisped to perfection, with double flavors of Nigella seeds and garlic.<br/><br/>Goat Curry was a lackluster. Spices weren't well-blended. Goat meat a bit on a chewy side.<br/><br/>Attendants were quite friendly and attentive. Decent choice for Vegans and Vegetarians. Zomato Gold Offer was processed smoothly.<br/><br/>Our verdict: Over-Priced and Over-Hyped<br/><br/>Now, a bit critical and unusual review, right? Couldn't help it but had to be honest to our Palate and Pocket.

Amazing place! With super fast service! Loved how they they explained every dish and how you eat it! The papadi chaat was super yum, the balls of happiness were pretty good as well but the best on the menu was masala paneer naan pizza!
Teddys99
Enjoyed coconut prawn curry and butter chicken, naan bread and curry chips. For dessert had the chocolate Ice cream with cashew milk. Food was very tasty and service was super quick. Background music was 80s and fabulous. Love the interior decor too however cold wind comes in from front door when customers arrive or leave, so try and get a table away from entrance.

This was my second visit to Daughter in Law - while that itself speaks volumes of my rating to an Indian restaurant in Melbourne, that otherwise are a disappointing and incompetent to say the least, Daughter in Law is a breath of fresh air.<br/><br/>I held off writing my review for the first visit because I was encouraged to visit again.<br/><br/>First visit:<br/>We, a party of 3 with the 4th to join later just landed there without reservation, the reply was, sorry we are running full capacity and can't accept guest without reservation - seeing my face, the host was quick to suggest that we were welcome to occupy bar seats if we'd like and they don't mind serving us food there.<br/>- browny points there to show willingness to accommodate.<br/>Food was gorgeous, in terms of presentation and taste. I'll talk about it in a bit.<br/><br/>Second visit:<br/>- this time I made reservation for 2 a week in advance.<br/>A night before the dinner date I called them at 10pm to ask if I can add 2 more to reservation and make it 4 for the same time, I was prepared to expect a no. But was pleasantly surprised to hear "all done! See you 4 at 6tomorrow"<br/><br/>Now that's not all.<br/><br/>Hosting and professionalism: 5<br/>Cleanliness: all seats were vacum cleaned before accepting new patrons. 5<br/>Spaciousness: Space is so optimally for seating that there isn't enough space to get up without almost pushing another table. 4<br/>Food: DELICIOUS! it is not a let down, and to an extent reminded me of mothers food back home. 5<br/><br/>And they're on zomato gold - icing on the cake!<br/>

It’s an exciting time for Indian food in Melbourne and daughter in law is a new addition to this new wave of Indian cuisine.<br/><br/>Jessie Singh of Babuji and Horn Please fame, opens this modern take on Indian cuisine.<br/><br/>The highlight of this place has to be the “insta-worthy” ambience and decor. Neon lights, plush velvet chair and mood lighting makes for the perfect spot for after work drinks. <br/><br/>The cocktails were innovative and flamboyant, missed the mark slightly for me though.<br/><br/>Entrees are served per piece, we tried the balls of happiness, scallop ceviche & beef tartare. Balls of happiness were a bit strong on flavour but the scallop n beef tartare hit the spot<br/><br/>The Aussie lamb chops were def a top pick, cooked medium rare and succulently coating with all the right spices. The feel here is delicate and light. The garlic and chive naans were a perfect compliment to the goat curry (the curry was delicious | did find the meat a bit tough).<br/><br/>The gulab jamun was made really well and the kulfi was not too sweet and generous on the pistachios.<br/><br/>Came here for the vibes and stay for the thrills<br/><br/>All in all a great addition to the Melbourne food scene, it’s vibrant & exciting. <br/><br/>Follow ✈️🌍TravelNTastes🍷☕️ for my adventures. 😊

lunch on a Fri - Thali was good; would have liked a bit more! lassie tasty. Ambiance was good but staff were stressed and transferred stress to us - keen to see us leave after about 30-35 minutes; waitress came to forcibly clear our table and demand payment before we had finished - this added to level of displeasure; marred the whole experience; not sure I'd go back - we had the feeling we were "thrown out" once the order was in - felt like a numbers "game" and I don't think that makes for a pleasurable experience no matter how good the food.

My partner and I visited on Tuesday night to celebrate his birthday, we had an incredible experience! <br/><br/>The service was fantastic; our waiter went above and beyond to make sure my partner was celebrating his birthday in style. We received two complimentary glasses of sparkling AND complimentary dessert! The waiter organised for all the staff to sing happy birthday while he brought out the dessert with candles and a special hat. The head chef/owner came out to wish my partner a happy birthday too! Fantastic service.<br/><br/>We ordered balls of happiness, butter chicken, blue cheese pizza and a side of basmati rice.  The balls of happiness were fun and very tasty! The waiter recommended to eat them whole.. very nice surprise! My partner loves butter chicken and was incredibly happy.<br/><br/>The music, décor and atmosphere was very funky. We will be back soon! Thanks Daughter-in-Law!

We had a pretty experience here, no thanks to both the restaurant and Zomato Gold. Came here with my colleague two days ago during lunch time, restaurant was (actually still is when I'm writing this) on Zomato Gold list, unlocked the offer and showed them, only to be told they "stopped doing this offer" and "lunch time was never valid for 1+1 Gold offer anyway". She wasn't even apologetic about it.<br/><br/>Since when did Zomato Gold offer different T&Cs for different restaurants? As far as I know, we have a generic list of T&Cs that apply to all restaurants. Since we were in a rush, we decided to eat there anyway. I reached out to Zomato Gold support, only response they gave was they "deeply regret the inconvenience and apologise for the trouble". An apology isn't going to pay for my lunch. No further action and they have conveniently ignored my emails since then. Zomato said they will go about fixing the issue right away but apparently not so, this restaurant is still on Zomato Gold list 2 days after the incident.<br/><br/>So disappointing and it seems a restaurant could always choose not to honour Gold offer as and when they feel like it, and there's nothing you or Zomato could do about it.<br/><br/>Food wise - the thali set lunch was served cold, not even lukewarm, very stingy with the portion (only 2 small pieces of butter chicken and 2 small pieces of lamb and 1 piece of vege curry) for $15. Good thing we added naan. Taste wise it was pretty alright but not amazing. Service was average.<br/><br/>Will not come back here again, for sure.
Aayush
Booking - We were trying to make a reservation for 6 people but we were informed by the restaurant that reservation of 6 or more would mean fixed menu ($55/person). We were quite dumbfounded because most Indian restaurant across Melbourne have a policy of 8-10 people or more. I wasn't quite happy with that and they refused to barge on that, we ended up making a reservation for 5 people.<br/>Ambience - The ambience is quite nice for an Indian restaurant, it was a little small but well decorated.<br/>Few points about service:<br/>Before Seating – We arrived 10 minutes early for our reservation and we were happy to wait if the table isn’t empty. However, we found out that the table was empty and all set but we weren’t allowed to sit because we came earlier. The staff advised that if your booking is at 8.15, you will only get a seat at 8.15. We had no issues to wait but we found it a little weird knowing that the table they’ll allocate is all ready to go. I thought it would be in their best interest for us to sit down earlier and leave earlier haha. <br/><br/>When the food came – We ordered a bunch of entrees and mains and both of them came at the same time. For a party of 5, we were given a small-ish round table where we could not fit all the dishes, we had to rush our food, eat it, and give the dishes back to make more room for other dishes. Felt like a hassle that could have been avoided had they brought entrees before mains. Again, if they can’t that’s fine but I personally would have appreciated the heads up. In addition, when both dishes came at the same time, by the time we started our mains, the breads were cold. <br/><br/>After we finished – When we finished our food, the waiter came around, took all the dishes and started cleaning the entire table with clot and leaving it spotless which was again weird as generally waiters wait for the group to leave before cleaning the table like that. <br/><br/>While Paying – We were paying for our food using Zomato Gold which entitles us to have the 2nd main dish for free. Some of the staff did not know what it is, they made few errors during billing which again could have been avoided had the staff knew how Zomato Gold works. <br/><br/>Food - Their Cauliflower was really nice as it had a nice kick to it. We also ordered their naan pizza which was again a really nice dish. Apart from that, their mains lacked spices, I don’t think their mains would suit an Indian pallet. After reading some of the other reviews, I’m satisfied in saying that I’m not the only one who has compared about lack of spices. <br/><br/>Pricing - Compared to most Indian restaurant, it is quite expense but I understand given the location and all. However, the food does not live up to the price standard.<br/><br/>Overall - I believe the service can be a lot better. For me, if the service is average or below-average, I’m more likely to not come and eat there even if the food is good. At this stage, I’m more likely to take my money to another restaurant with better service.

We started with the naan, papadum and dips, and those were good. But after that, everything was downhill. The cauliflower that many are raving about just confused me what cuisine it’s from. The chicken tandoori lacked the vibrant Indian spices and seemed like it wasn’t cooked in a tandoor. And the Rogan Josh was very, very far from an authentic one. And when the bill arrived, it felt too pricey for the lacklustre food :(

Great spot for Modern Indian with awesome decor! Can be a bit packed these days, but the curries are amazing with no oil 😋 The cauliflower is a must try and is absolutely delicious. Will come back :)

Amazing Experience at Daughter in law. The food was presented really well and tasted delicious. Specially loved their Batata Vada and Papdi Chat. The desserts were pretty amazing too specially the Kulfi.

This place is just INCREDIBLE!!! Right down from the ambience, to the hospitality, service, hygiene, food and Jessi Singh himself! Highly recommend starting off with the feed me menu before you try other dishes. It’s so hard to decide what I loved most. But the feed me menu left me in a food coma (for all the right reasons)! The cardamom kulfi MUST be sold in stores. It’s THAT good. 🙌🏻👌🏻

Welcome to Australian Indian restaurant screening Mugle aazam. Owner has this styled theme restaurant in US and couple in Australia too. Chic themed restaurant with very fine cutlery and designer glasses. Food is not spicy and tailored made to Aussie taste so Indian taste buds stay away. Have not tried their thali but it seems interesting. Chole and daal were on sweet side. Chicken and mutton where blunt with less spice.

Ok Indian cuisine restaurant in Melbourne cbd. We ordered unauthentic butter chicken, aunties Daal and Naan. Food tasted okay. You may need to ask for extra spice as food was non spicy for Indian taste. Overall experience was good.
Quince And Cheese
Had an incredible experience at this new (to Melbourne) concept. The upscale Indian eatery offers contemporary dishes that don't stray too far from the familar but provide enough of an edge to satisfy those seeking something novel. One particularly cool dish was the balls of happiness, presented by the chef himself, who urged us to down the whole thing in one bite. It's advised to listen, as this is the best way to get the full experience of the crispy shell and it's sweet and sour inner filling of fruit and yoghurt.<br/><br/>Speaking of yoghurt, I can't recommend the hung yoghurt croquettes enough. Their tart and creamy with a crisp exterior, perfectly complemented by a bed of pureed beetroot. They offer a back of the throat spice that doesn't overwhelm the flavour of the dish.<br/><br/>I knew I had to get a curry but was stuck on what to order, opting for the veg in a turmeric coconut cream (as a less lactose-heavy alternative to the kale fritters in turmeric yoghurt). It was much more expensive than the other curries (for an unknown reason), but extremely satisfying, with a hint of mustard and a lot of veggies. I ordered rice to accompany, which turned out to be a heaping amount.<br/><br/>If you're up for a drink, the venue has a self service fridge of craft beers and an assortment of natural wines. Most are by the bottle and some are by the glass.<br/><br/>As for the space itself, it's fit out really nicely with a combo of modern and vintage influence, baby pink and emerald, projections of 70s Indian films, cocktail trolleys and art deco light fixtures. The staff are extremely attentive (if not overly so) although my main did take a while to come out. But I can excuse that because my dining experience was overall stellar.

Watch out because 'Daughter in Law' is in town. A funky fusion indian place which is so well styled with a culture mish mash! The place is hustle and bustle and the staff are great! I needed to try this place out. Really was a enjoyable night with cocktails and some great fusion dishes. The mussels and Naan break pizza a highlight. Can't wait to go back to try the Thali next time. **Disclaimer: although the restaurant has generously invited me to their restaurant this review is still based on my genuine opinion.

We had been really looking forward to trying the food here, but left because the music was so unpleasantly loud. I couldn't hear my dining companion and started getting a headache.<br/>I'll try again some time, and hopefully by then the music will be at a less painful decibel level.<br/>I go out to dinner to have a nice time with friends and loved ones, not have my ears assaulted by excessively loud pop music.
Gee
Underwhelming. Been looking forward to this - although they still have plenty of work to do to get this place up to scratch. Came in at about 1:45pm there were only a few occupied tables - maybe 12 other diners. Ordered the lunch tali deal which is a plate with a sample of 4 different curries and added a naan. It took 20 minutes for my food to come out, and then a few more minutes for the naan bread to arrive. The curries were lukewarm and the yoghurt dip was refrigerator cold. Surely being the lunch special, it’s just a scoop of each curry into the bowl? I can’t believe I waited 20 minutes. The food tasted ok but the naan was so greasy. Uber delivery guys and the like we’re turning up and being told their orders weren’t ready and then grumbling amongst themselves. Daughter In Law is going to seriously have to get things sorted if it wants to survive up this end of town. Staff were pleasant but just seemed out of their depth and lost.

Great ambience, the place has a great buzz and amazing fit-outs. We ordered for the Colonel Tso’s Cauliflower, Tandoori Chicken, Palak Paneer, Butter Chicken and Garlic Naan. The wait for our mains was longer than expected but they made it up with their service. Good portion size and if you are looking for a fusion modern Indian food that’s in the CBD, this place ticks the boxes!

Was exited to visit this restaurant from the day it opened up, but was very disappointed by the service of this place. The food was OK-ish, needs improvement.

A feast for the tastebuds! Jesse and the team have created a welcoming space to experience traditional Indian flavours with a modern twist. <br/>Ordered the banquet because we wanted to try everything... The banquet is generous in inclusions (we were able to try most of the menu) and value. Happy to recommend everything we tried - not one dish was dismissed as below par. Can’t wait to experience this again soon! Thanks, Daughter-in-law

Wow this place was great value! While eagerly awaiting the reopening of chilli India, I haven’t been able to find a reliable Indian lunch until now. For $15 you get a thali with chicken, lamb, Dahl, veggie, rice and pappadum. For an extra $3.50 you Cana did a garlic naan which I would place in the top tier naan category. Mild flavours, but great price, nice decor and will def be back.
Good Food Good Mood
We visited Daughter in Law with friends tonight a really impressive space aesthetically though the Dj was a little loud. I waited about 20 minutes for my late dining companions during which time I was largely ignored, someone did advise they would bring water when I originally sat down but it didn’t eventuate until follow up which was disappointing. <br/><br/>I found the food enjoyable though the Indians on our table were more critical. It’s not the cheapest menu but I saw the value given the atmosphere. It’s kind of akin to the modern fusion style Asian restaurants that attract Melbourne’s semi pretentious youth like Tokyo Tina or Chin Chin in the Indian incarnation. For me though I personally wouldn’t have chosen the two entrees we had I really liked both the gol gappa and the scallop cheviche so I’m glad we tried them. <br/><br/>We also had the tandoori chicken, butter chicken, coconut prawn curry and the tandoori chicken naan pizza as well as a veggie curry which isn’t listed on the Zomato menu. This was plenty of food for the four of us and perfect when paired with some deliciously made Indian inspired cocktails. There was heat in the coconut curry and it was probably my favourite equally tied with the butter chicken. I definitely recommend getting the tandoori chicken too. A well thought out menu overall and I have a feeling it’s going to be very popular

The Thali lunch set is great! I loved the flavours of the butter chicken, lamb shank curry and the dhal. The rice was not very aromatic though and the naan was a bit dense. The naan is definitely not as fluffy as that served at Delhi Streets. I love a bit of rice and a bit of naan with my curries. A whole serve of naan was too much - maybe include half a serve of naan as part of the Thali without the additional $2.50 charge, and reduce the serve of rice? The pappadum was excellent, but maybe place as the last item on the plate so that it doesn’t lose the crispiness? Service was top notch. Can’t wait to return the vast dinner menu!

Visited this new kid on the block for the unusual combination of indian flavours. Who could have thought of a blue cheese naan pizza really?!<br/><br/>Let's start with everything we loved about DIL:<br/><br/>- Yogurt Croquettes are highly recommended.<br/>- Good customer service and fabulous ambience.<br/>- Cocktails infused with spices were interesting but not the best.<br/>- The Pani Puris (Balls of happiness) were out of this world (took us back to India).<br/>-The paneer pizza has some lip smacking flavours.<br/>- The ice cream was yum!<br/>- The menu was extremely fab for non-vegetarians.<br/><br/>Leta talk about what didn't work out for us:<br/><br/>- The naan pizzas were quite chewy. Every bite made me taste wet dough.<br/>- The cocktails were unusual but it had confusing flavours.<br/>- The team is quite lost with what they could suggest.<br/><br/>Overall it's a unique concept and stands true to what they claim "Unauthentic Indian Food". The fusion could be a hit and a miss but some dishes are bang on with flavours.<br/><br/>Suggestions:<br/><br/>- More vegetarian options in the mains would be great.<br/>- Fusion in desserts is what I was looking forward to but exploring that could be a hit :)

Everything was super tasty. Service was quick and all the staff were very friendly, polite and helpful. A great value dinner. The 'Balls of Happiness' were a yummy surprise. The 'Unauthentic Butter Chicken' was great. Thanks very much.

My housemate is really good at finding amazing dinner places and this was probably one of her best picks. Let’s start with the ambience. We walk in, we are greeted politely, shown to our table and the first thing that catches my eye was that Mughal e Azam was being screened (Projector on a huge wall) and foot tapping Bollywood tracks being played throughout the restaurant. Amazing lighting along with very comfortable seating so that helped. <br/><br/>Coming to the food, I cannot -simply cannot- tell you how much it was a joy train. Starting from the Gol Gappe, Yoghurt Croquettes and even the cocktails- everything was delightful, lip smacking and you cannot help but order a second round of Gol Gappe (Balls of Happiness). <br/><br/>For the mains, we ordered two Naan pizzas. I will admit that the Masala Paneer Naan pizza was probably better than the Blue Cheese and Herb one but it was truly a first in exploring some crazy fusion food. To top it off was the amazing pistachio, honey and cardamom kulfi. I’m definitely coming back to this place again. <br/><br/><br/>Check this place out for the entrees, desi-flavoured cocktails and for the fantastic ambience. <br/><br/>My only beef with them: There’s only one dessert option and I really really hope that they add more soon.

Hands down, one of the best Indian places in Melbourne. The food was amazing, I had a thali really filling. Not that expensive. <br/><br/>P.S. Definitely checkout the bathroom.

Ordered their Thali lunch today $15 in a nice Indian restaurant with comfortable seating was #worthit! <br/><br/>There are pescatarian and meat options and I am sure if you ask they have a veggie option too.<br/><br/>The meat option includes several curries (butter chicken, lamb curry, salmon curry and lentil dahl), yoghurt and rice. We added naan bread to our meals to mop up the sauces and it was so delish. <br/><br/>However being a new restaurant there are a few things that needs improvement. Food-wise it took sooooo long to come out. We were one of two tables to dine there at the time and food took ages.<br/><br/>The lamb curry can be cooked longer as the meat wasn’t melt in your mouth. The sauce was incredible though.<br/><br/>Thirdly they gave us the smallest table for three people! Thalis comes in this huge round tray, they should have given us a bigger table. Thank goodness the very charmistic owner (?) came out to give help us push two tables together. Normally I do judge harshly with these issues (esp when I am Hangry), but given that they are on their day three and their food is really good I will be nice 😛
