Review Ripples Bentleigh - Melbourne

Val Giber
Share this!!! Very simple, straight to the point. Last night, 10 of us spent $750.00 which included very handsome tips. And that is not including $350 that I personally paid for 3 lobsters out of the live tank. So, in total, $1100 spent. Just before leaving, I asked for a can of coke as I was very thirsty after all of the flavored food. Then, asked and asked again, no can of coke in sight. As I approached the front counter on the way out, I asked the man (Boss) as to what happened to my coke. The answer I got was exactly this: "THE ACCOUNT IS CLOSED" Well, what happened next, I will not talk about, it could be interpreted as "unsavory". The final thought!!! Think, if "Ripples" thought that much of me, What do they really think of you when they say to you: "Hello Sir/Madam!!! Welcome!!! Good to see you again!!!" And all that with a smile, and a very heavy Chinese accent. Yeah, go back there, as anybody gives a flying f__k.

Yum cha dishes fried chicken dumplings and prawn rice noodle it was terrible. undercooked soggy not crispy super oily it's not how this dish is supposed to be taste awful and very disappointed in quality ! I threw these in the bin as it was inedible waste of over $20! Never come here again , actually I want a refund! Charge so much but quality of food does not match! Be careful food might make you sick . And poor customer service!

Bought my family and friends here last. Customer service was terrible, we order close to 1k of food and drinks off the menu. Beside the food being very average we had this rude lady waitress that made us feel very unwelcome by rushing us with our meals, collecting dishes before we could even finish, literally breathing down our necks being super annoying that we can’t enjoy our meal and gathering. We know she’s probably rushing to close up and go home but this was around 8pm and they don’t close till 9pm. When spoken to management about it they blame it on another younger staff that was working saying it’s his lack of experience. Management is horrible, hope you guys start treating all customers the same with better service and this is on a quiet night with 2-3 tables.

I have been going to this restaurant for 7 years. Never got disappointed. I saw some reviews about the rude manner of the staff, to be honest it is not that bad and I have got used to it. Food quality is not great but consistent. Flavor is also more than average. There is no other Chinese restaurant's food quality that can compare with this one on bayside area, so basically you do not have any options unless you want to travel to Springvale's Golden Leaf or Keysborough's Shark Fin.

Great food, friendly staff and good atmosphere. Been here twice. First time we had the lobster. Really yummy. Second time is the dishes attached to this review. The birds nest was nice and made authentically from potatoes.

Fantastic yum cha with a selection of fresh seafood that can be cooked to your liking. My favourite is ginger dumplings and crab claws.

We popped in recently to order some takeaways for the Chinese New Year. We ordered the duck and roast pork and both were super yummy. The duck was well seasoned and the meat nice and tender. The roast pork skin was super crispy, yummy.

Great family restaurant, the team were brilliant with their customer service. Highly recommend the San Choi Bow.

I just ordered and I regret so much wasting $51 on food that’s so bad. The reviews are fake, please save your money and order elsewhere and save money on better tasting food. All the food I ordered will be going into the bin. That’s how bad it is!

I decided to try this place and I have to admit it was a disaster. From service to sitting to quality and size of food and its price....I really fail to understand how some people find it nice. I will not be caught twice.

Very disappointed with the quality of food last night. The quails were oily and the prawn toast was missing the prawn. Both dishes were cooked in dirty oil and was cold. The photo shows the quality of the prawn toast. The rice noodle dish was tasteless. My husband’s beef in oyster was not good at all it’s as if the meat was boiled. When we advised we were not happy with our meal they didn’t care which was upsetting as we have been there many times. Never returning!!!!
Don’t waste your money!!!

Food was quite ok.. It was a bit hard to communicate with some floor staffs but they still tried to be nice to us.
Mongolian lamb fillet was pretty good

Ripples has been the epicenter for Chinese food in Bentleigh for as long as I can remember. The food is good and a great place to eat with others. However, it is on the pricey side and overall experience is average. Service is mixed. Some staff are excellent whilst others are lackluster. Overall, Ripples is 'Good'

Average establishment with basic yum cha dishes. Asked for eggplant stuffed with pork and they finally after three times asking bought out eggplant stuffed with prawn???? Then the coconut pudding had an after taste. After asking the group to check the floor manager tried to tell me it was just me- l don’t think so as this is my favourite dish and has been eaten numerous times throughout Melbourne. The dumplings were okay and the whole fish itself was well prepared yet the sauce lacked flavour. A bit of a hit and miss. Staff not very attentive and the toilets needs a good clean.

This place is OK to drop in for Yum Cha in the Bentleigh area. It does OK because there is no tough competition around its immediate catchment area for Yum Cha offerings. Clean, seats about 80, service is up and down, but the core steamed dumplings any variety stand up pretty well to other places. BBQ pork buns good also. Price is favoured to the establishment and like said above probably due to not much Yum Cha competition locally. Food 7, Place 6, Service 6 out of 10.

Meh !!
Not very exciting I’m afraid, extremely over priced the food was nothing special, the restaurant is dirty, floors and bathroom especially
The fish tank with live fish is murky and dirty most of the fish already look dead , not very appealing
As described in a previous post, Ripples is consistent in quality, food-wise, and consistent in their aloof service. Not surprisingly, things remain unchanged! As per usual, we enjoyed all their yum cha dishes except for the baked scallop which was probably the most expensive item and most unpleasant to eat given it was dry and the taste of flour predominant. Unfortunately, the word stodge comes to mind when describing this piece.

Was very disappointed on Saturday night. Ordered our food and waited along period of time, before we were asked by 3 separate waiters if we received our food. After the tables around received their food we finally received our mains minus the entree. No apologies and then asked if I want to give a tip. Not one to normally complain but you ruined our date!
Willtravelforfood17
We came to this place to try the yum cha as it was close by and we hadn’t been. On first glace the place is pretty run down on the outside and when we went inside it was the same. We were seated immediately without a reservation as the restaurant was barely half full on a Saturday at 1pm peak period which tells you something. Unfortunately every dish was a miss - the prawns in each dish were a mushy instead of springy texture - makes me think it wasn’t so fresh. The yam in the wu kok was sour. The skins of the dumplings were too thick and mushy. I will not come back again.

Just had chicken sweet corn soup but was really good soup.

Good and quick service and Jasmine tea was excellent.

Conveniently located.

Staff communicated very well
Living local to the area Ripples is a landmark that everyone has to visit at least once a year. A high quality meal is expected when you dine here. Big venue and good for both small and big groups.
Bigmelbappetite
I’m so glad there’s a option close to home to satisfy those yum Cha cravings! Serving up the classics Ripples is a wonderful option. I still would say the Springvale one is much better though
Teddys99
Came here for yum cha the other day. Food was average and have had better elsewhere locally. Calamari was as tough as a gum boot and majority of dumplings were bland. Service was frantic. No one took a drinks order at all and we had to ask for soy sauce...can you believe it?? They also surcharge for credit card payment which was insult to injury.
Jen
Traditional Cantonese restaurant with authentic and yummy roast duck, roast pork and BBQ pork. Yum cha is nothing special comparing to all the other yum cha restaurants in the city but a good decent yum cha in local Bentleigh area.
LeanGuy
Quality restaurant. More expensive, but worth the added price. Known for their dumplings, which are great. Try the chicken hot pot dish, and the half duck (with bones). Friendly service, and quick turnaround. Please stop charging customers a merchants fee.

We had a party of 20, spread over two tables upstairs
Food was great (recommend the crispy pork, salted egg fried tofu and pepper steak). The service is what keeps us coming back! We had a gentleman and lady look after us and they were amazing. We had young kids in our party and they were interacting with them, making them feel special.
So happy with everything. Definitely will be back. Very highly recommended!

Wow...... went to Ripples at Bentleigh with best friend. Lunch time... Excellent Service .... Abundant food choice including dessert. Nice decor... red carpet... and service better than flowerdrum.... at chinatown..... Ahem... great food... this is a must... Mark.

It should be re-named "RIPOFF". One of the worst dining experiences in my life. Friday evening, restaurant semi-deserted. I asked for a table for one and I received a look of contempt by a Chinese waiter who sat me in the worst and narrowest sit in the place. The attitude of the waitress who took my order was as bad. Food (totally overpriced): mix dumplings = food court fare. Main: supposed to be lemon duck. Tiny pieces of old roasted duck offcuts, mainly fat, floating in a extremely intense citric acid and vinegar sauce (to mask the rancid taste of fat). I tried to eat it but after a few pieces I had to stop. The two Chinese students at the table near mine did the same with their food and refused to take the rest home. I was disgusted. I anyway payed my bill and the cashier shouted at me :" Too short time for dinner!!!". I did not answer and left. NEVER AGAIN!!!

Perfect place for Sunday yum cha with the family.
Ambience : 4/5. A relatively busy place especially on the weekends. Spaces in between tables were tight, just enough for the dim sim carts to maneuvering around in between tables and chairs.
Food : 4/5. Love the food. Simple and delicious. They did not have the chee cheong fun that day, so we ordered extra century egg congee. Absolutely no regret on that one as it was tasty and the congee was cooked perfectly. We also ordered the tau fu fah (soybean curd), which was probably the best I’ve had in a long long time. The curd was smooth and silky; and the syrup was not too sweet which was enjoyable.
Service : 4/5. Service was probably the reason why we always come back. Called 30 minutes before to make sure if there is any tables available and they were kind enough to take our last minute booking which was amazing. The waiteresses were very attentive and remembered each order placed. Kuddos!
Advanced booking is highly recommended especially on the weekends. Will definitely come back again.

The food was delicious! Came here with my wife on a chillax day. All their staff are very attentive. One of the best Yumcha place in the area! Will be back again.

3.5
Ripples offers a variety of dishes that are large in quantity. For 3 diners, three dishes was more than enough to feed us, and even allowed for the leftovers to be taken away.
The fish with creamy corn sauce was a family favourite! A generous amount of battered fish covered in the corn sauce- goes seriously well with a bowl of rice! This is probably a dish that’s best to eat in the restaurant rather than takeaway if you’re after that crispy battered fish, as the corn sauce does leave the fish pretty soggy after a while.
Kung Pao chicken dish was flavourful and well balanced with the chicken, vegetables and cashew nuts .
The fried tofu dish was plentiful and fried perfectly! A generous amount of shallots sprinkled over the tofu and paired with some sweet sour sauce.
A restaurant that we will visit again and again. We are keen to try the yum cha one day too, however it does seem a little pricier.
Hungry Little Dinosaur
Fairly average yumcha but it’ll do for Bentleigh I guess. Usual offerings of hargao and siumai and the usual suspects. Pricey for what it was though. $50 for what the city or Doncaster would have for $30. Offensive to charge for Chinese tea.
Fiona Kang
As soon as you walk in you can almost feel the history of the place. I don’t exactly know how long Ripples has been open, but I felt like watching a show on the ABC channel about ABCs (Australian Born Chinese) in the earlier days of Chinese immigration to Australia. The staff were efficient, moved and worked so harmoniously and in sync it was such a great atmosphere to enjoy an excellent, authentic yum cha experience. It almost felt like a hub for the community with the diversity of customers that were present. We’ll be returning soon :)
Hoj Youn
Great quality Chinese food, we especially enjoy their Peking duck and fried rice. Yumcha is just average though. Service is consistently good.
Nicole Wamba
an old classic that has been in Bentleigh for years. this trusty Chinese restaurant is a go to for a special occasion as it's fairly big with plenty of room for big groups.
Charlotte Cooper
Horrifying customer service, the dim sims are all dried out already.
If you rate the food more than 2, you clearly have not had decent Chinese food in your life.
BillyJoBob
I went to dinner w/ the family and had a lovely, delicious, hot meal. We went on a Sunday night and they were able to accommodate a walk in from the street. We ordered Singapore noodles w/ chicken & veggies, chicken San baio chow, vegetarian spring rolls and king prawns. Although a bit expensive, there was plenty for leftovers. Will definitely be back to try something else on the menu.
Lightworker Trinh
Some staff were attentive while some were incompetent. Waited over 30 minutes for a vegetarian dumpling. Not enough vegetarian options because vegetarian dumplings was the only thing available for vegetarians.
Food
The most expensive yum Cha I have ever been to. Yes the food is delicious food and mostly attentive waiters. However there was also a waitress who pushed us to make a decision and tell her exactly what we wanted so she didn't have to push the entire trolley of food to us (yes we were the only customers at the time and I understand her POV but she went about it very rudely - as if we were a massive inconvenience to her).

Won't be back.
Lia Yosaatmadja
Seriously one of the most expensive yum cha I've ever been to! In saying that, the food was actually pretty darn good! They were freshly made using good quality ingredients. I love love love the garlic gai lan, im not quite sure it was worth the price, but none the less it was excellent!

The service was friendly and efficient, they sat us down, and immediately offered the Chinese tea. Next time we are in Bentleigh area, will pop back in for sure

Excellent food and excellent service ...waiting staff extremely attentive ..best chinese meal in a very long time ....great menu choice and food arrived very quickly....would highly recommend!
Alex Chen
Great Chinese food experience. Canton food to be more specific. The restaurant environment, staff, food choices are very authentic Chinese food, you can choice btw dim sum or formal dishes. Friendly staff and good value for money.
Emmaandamei
Always have had yumcha with families and friends here. The dinner menu is also great. Love the seafood dishes and roasted duck. I reckon it's the best Chinese(Cantonese) restaurant around Bentleigh. Even better than brighton's Chinese restaurants. However if looking for some fancy dinning this wouldn't be the best choice. But you are looking for the authentic food. This is it.
Rachael
As an Asian who grew up on Chinese food and yum Cha, it blows my mind that this place has a higher rating than 3.0. They charge for basic Chinese tea. The service was hilarious when you understand Chinese, canto and English. They openly bad mouth the customers who don't speak Chinese and they patronise the people who question the garbage they're serving. There must be a better option out there.
Linda Graudins
Six of us had yum cha today. The selection was great. Our two favourites- salt and pepper squid and chinese broccoli- were made on request. The tea was refilled as required. The place was full and the wait staff lovely. We will be going again.

Have been here a few times and decided to give it another go. Entrée of prawn toast and spring rolls were very good. We also ordered Prawns with ginger with steamed rice. We advised waitress that rice was cold and she took rice away and returned with some more rice which was still not hot. We also had to send back our main dish Prawns with ginger as this was as cold as the rice. They reheated the prawn dish in the microwave and returned it to us., WONT BE BACK.....

Very disappointing! Rude staff!! When ordering what is described as vegetarian dish you should know that it IS NOT VEGETARIAN!!! Their vegetarian options are made with oyster sauce which is not vegetarian. Despite ordering food to an amount over $100, they refused to change this sauce to a vegetarian sauce so that it actually would be vegetarian as they described it. Very rude staff!!!!
Dimsumforone
Ratio Decidendi: Quality dim sum, good range of dishes, at reasonable prices. It’s been surprisingly hard to find a good yum cha place since returning to Melbourne but I’m glad to have finally found my weekend go to. All too often I’ve found restaurants trying to cut corners by stinging out on the amount of prawn (or protein element) in their dim sum (in some cases ‘diluting’ it with a filler), but not at Ripples. It’s refreshing to not only taste the prawn in each bite but to actually see it!
Simon
Best Yum Cha in the Bayside area. Very consistent quality and the staff are efficient and generally very accommodating. You must try the BBQ pork (only on Sundays I think) and the Duck is brilliant. They also sell BBQ ducks to take home, which is great if you fancy yourself to make Aisian fare at home.

Very ordinary considering it is Xmas Day and they want the customers today. Little to no atmosphere, a couple of cheap and nasty decorations, plain cheap orange paper serviettes. Honestly, there is a party shop down the road, would it kill them to have decent Xmas serviettes or a simple Festive centrepiece? The food was fine and we enjoyed some Yum Cha dishes before ordering 2 more meals off the menu. Didnt think the staff gave a damn, they were hassling us to pay before we were ready to leave. That's just rude. We were the last table this afternoon and again, before we left, they started doing maintenance on the air conditioning ducts. Also rude when customers are still there and especially on Christmas which also happens to be my daughter's birthday. Not impressed today.

The spirit of spreading its cuisine .... got to give it to the Chinese ......

I was in Bentleigh this afternoon, not known for its Chinese food, there are a few Thai restaurants, mostly closed for lunch. So I was contemplating between Chinese or Jewish cafe across the street for lunch, then I saw these roast beauties hanging by the Window ..... so, it wasn't a hard choice.

Walked inside, linen tables, team of uniformed waiting staff, very good set up, very wide room and roomy, live seafood in the aquarium at the back, so I thought it would be pricey. Asked for their Lunch Menu, can't believe it, mostly around $11-under $20. Either that or Yumcha.

I didn't go for the Yumcha as I was dining alone :-( so I went for the classic Dry Egg Noodles with some Roast Pork, been missing some. For $12.50 I definitely didn't make the wrong choice, Roast Pork was well made, just a bit on the salty side, perfectly complemented by those Egg noodles and soup. Chinese Tea - Jasmine for $2.20 and a delicious lunch is done for under $15.00 with some change.

All this in a very nice ambiance ....... by the Window some more.

Not being bias, but this is why we have Chinatown in just about every City in the World; the Chinese spirit of spreading its GREAT cuisine.

Thank you and well done to the team at Ripples!

I was in the intention of eating dumplings and went in one afternoon. This place is very nice in terms of interiors and lightings. Was pleased. Ordered pork dumplings and chicken mushroom soup and big roasted duck. Dumpling was okay I guess and soup was bad and duck was horrible. Duck was served cold... Cold. Taste was nice but cold dish. I still dont get it. Whats wrong with you people. Who serves cold duck?
Renata
Food is good BUT the service is terrible. It always feels like they want you out before you even order!!! There is a waitress her name sounds like Shurel who wears gloves. she treats staff and customers like army soldiers . Such angry woman makes us sick to be in the same room with her!!!
Authentic Hong Kong style 'Yum Cha' place. Good selection of Dim Sum for everything taste buds.
Always lovely to start a Sunday here, enjoying a pot of fragrant Chinese tea & devouring the little plates of goodness.

Our favourites & must haves:
Century egg porridge
Egg tarts
Roast pork buns
Rice paper rolls
Siew Mai
Steamed prawn dumplings
Pan fried carrot cake

Yum!
Carlo
Being sort of new to the area, I was pleased to find a Yum Cha spot close to home! Traditional selections and friendly staff, similar to what you can expect from other Ripples restaurants. Pricing is reasonable and the restaurant is very clean. Looks like I have a good hang over spot on the weekend 😜
Facebook User
Pretty average quality. No complaints there. But they force the premium and super premium on you. By the end there were scarcely 3 of the "standard" options.
No price indicated on the scorecard, so it all feels like a bit of a trap.
Brungiel
Ripples is OK, but nothing spectacular. The food serves are generous but the flavour somewhat lacking or sometimes off. A lot of their dishes I find way too sweet and saucy. Service is good, fairly pricey imo.
Jonathan Qiu
To have a good yum cha you need to have a bustling busy atmosphere with a full house. Ripples does this well despite not being located in one of Melbourne's Asian Hubs. Ripples brings the yumcha experience to families to Bentleigh, Brighton, Hampton and surrounding suburbs without having to travel to Chinatown, Springvale or Boxhill.
A great selection of all time yumcha favourites and if there's anything you don't see you might just be able to order it. The staff are friendly and experienced. If you're Asian I'd suggest making some sort of hint of what language you speak when the carts come around as they speak English, Cantonese and Mandarin which can be awkward after they say all the dishes they have in a language you don't speak. I'm rating this slightly lower as it doesn't stock much of the more traditional dishes which I find my self always ordering.
Luke
First time takeaway here. We ordered the Satay chicken skewers, Shredded steak with mandarin sauce, Roast duck with plum sauce and a large special fried rice. We really enjoyed the flavours of all dishes-just the way we like it. Quality of the proteins in each dish were very good, particularly the duck. Serving sizes seemed generous as well. Only negative was the Plum sauce for the roast duck was way too small for the amount of duck. Other than this, by far the best Chinese we have enjoyed in the area. Reminded me of the Chinese of old that I grew up eating as a child when we'd go out as a family in Sydney. Will be back to try more dishes here soon. Recommend.

$420 for ONE single medium lobster... Expensive.
Other dishes are OK but over priced.
Service is normal, nothing to celebrate...
I think they are too aggressive for pricing!!!
Martin Spicer
Ordered the banquet on a busy Saturday night.Waited for I hour to receive first entree. For a banquet the service was unacceptably slow .The last main was cancelled as we waiting nearly 2 and half hours .I requested that it be deleted from Bill .The waiter then bought out the main in a take away container .Anyway I said to dish it out .The take away container was half full for two people to share.I queried the miserly portion size .The waiter said that the portion size was normal .I said that I have been to China and been to many banquets and the portion size was suitable for a child.I will not frequent this establishment again as it failed to deliver.

We were not happy tonight as we waited for almost an hour for our meals to be served. We saw boxes of take away but the guests that were on premises had to wait for the take away to be completed. NOT IMPRESSED AT ALL!!!
David Lew
Great food. Particularly the chicken and eggplant hotpot. Possibly slightly less authentic food for what we like but we're fussy. Priced a little high too. But the atmosphere is very warm and friendly.
Katrina Orchard
This restaurants range of yum cha is amazing and tasty. We come here at least once a month. The roast pork and ginger prawn dumplings are our favourite. Hidden on a quiet strip and not exactly inviting from the outside but you will be highly impressed

Loved it for early dinner while was pregnant. Great menu selection. Prices ok too. Waiters very attentive. Could not fault a thing. Overall good, there's always room for improvement Ripples
They need to call this restaurant "We Will Never Die". Even after a questionable health inspection sometime ago and a very tricky Centre Road position with picky clientele, they have bounced back and continued to thrive.

The service is beyond terrible here. Don't expect a smile or an extra serviette to be handed to you without a strange glance being exchanged Blue Steel style.

Alas, the food is fairly normal and standard for a Chinese restaurant, not the crazily authentic offerings of Box Hill or Glen Waverley.

When it comes to Asian food, I crave authenticity and traditional flair, and this establishment just does not provide that. Great for families and those who have a Western palette.
Nelly
We are regulars here. They know us on sight. Whilst it may not be the best yum Cha in Melbourne it's still good. I have had worst in little China town. Dinner here is good too, the roast duck is our favourite & definitely worth a try
Maximus
Nice food and all.. Not as authentic as something you'd get at Richmond in Victoria Street. Also more expensive then at other Yum Cha places. Selection is large and waiters plenty. Be sure to arrive earlier than 2:30 as there is a strict closing of the kitchen. Surrounding is nice but would only go here if I was near by. Otherwise I'd go somewhere else.

Traditional Quality Hong Kong Food. Feels like I am back in 80s when first walk in to Ripples. Deco was outdated and looks like the place has not being renovated since it started many years ago. The staff were friendly and the restaurant became very busy quickly.

The abalone was on special for $70 a pound but we decided to try more conventional dishes. Meals were very well cook and care was taken to ensure authenticity . I must say it was great to taste good old quality food. The BBQ dishes were prepare nicely.

Its a place for someone looking for good old quality traditional food.

Freezing. We were seated at a table under an air vent, we asked for the air con to be turned up, a waitress turned it off. It was turned on again minutes later, we froze throughout the meal. It was so cold even the food served hot, chilled quickly. Our waiter was unpleasant and unhelpful. I would not go back I do not recommend it to anyone.

thankyou Mr. Grumpy
Hungryhippo88
Food good. Service TERRIBLE.
Chi/Chin (male manager on Saturday last week) was so rude to my girlfriend saying 'whatever you want, we don't have' when trying to request some food. We were asking for pan fried dumplings which he just kept telling us, they didn't sell any.
We were well aware they did, so we just asked another waiter and they helped us out.
Hard to get service at time, slightly overpriced but the food is good.
Ivan Earl
Badly organised consequently staff stuff up. But food is reasonable cooked but grossly over priced.

Yummy yum cha. Great food, some dishes even better then shark fin house in city. friendly staff but service can sometimes be slow. overall, love it!
Brett
Came here last Sunday ready for a big yum cha feed and few reds, on entry the floor is very big and fits in heaps of people. we booked however they appeared to lose the booking as it wasn't written down. after waiting a few mins they took us up stairs to a free table. the food was good, dumplings, although falling apart, tasted really good. the pork buns were delish. I was really looking forwards to the duck which was good but not great. the young staff member looking after us was fantastic and happy to talk to us in our tipsy state, he even have us a taste of the Chinese rice wine as we left. yum cha the way it should be, definitely be back!
Markkph
Poor service. Service - Staff looked annoyed when I requested for booster seat and extra serviette. Tea was not topped up or poured. My plate was cleared abruptly without being asked ( I was still eating from the plate).
Quality - The food was not worth the sacrifice in terms of service.
Overall - I will skip this establishment.
Julycheee
Good food. Eaten here many times over the years. Decent food (extensive menu) and good Cantonese flavours. Seating can be a bit squishy, but overall a nice place to go for good quality Chinese, albeit a tad pricey.

My hubbie & I eat out several times a week. What we love about Ripples is their yum cha lunch... In particular the prawn dumplings (some dishes are better than others). If you don't fancy seafood, then probably not for you as non seafood yum cha variety is limited, (though you can order a-la-carte off the menu & plenty to choose from). Service is always very efficient & if you are pressed for time you can be in, out & refueled in no time!
Roy Chan
Service is slow, and the yum cha selection is below average. A bit overpriced too. $26.80 for a plate of mixed roast meat platter for 2 is too
much. Some places are overpriced, but good food or good service makes up for it. I dont know how they survived with mediocre service, food and being overpriced.
Yida
Not great, service is TERRIBLE. Food - can either be very bland, or very seasoned. Seemingly no idea on what 'subtle flavours' are. Not suited for the south east chinese tongue. Though, I do recommended the deep fried tofu (highlight of the menu)
Service - Very poor, staff firstly seem very nice, but once dining, the waiters would not help fill the tea, but instead would mingle by themselves.
Price - Reasonable, but could be cheaper. I've found better chinese restaurants for cheaper, and better food and services.

Overall unhappy customer. Will not go back.
Barb'Stephen
Poor quality - we love yum cha and were excited to try a new local. Very disappointed. Tasted like the majority of the food presented at yum cha came from the freezer cabinet at Coles. Will not be back.
Cody Thomas
We love the yum cha here! The service is efficient, the food is affordable and delicious! Would recommend the steamed pork buns, pork and prawn dim sims and scallop dumplings.

AUTHENTIC Cantonese Cuisine. Most authentic Cantonese Cuisine this side of Lt Bourke Street! If you are looking for Sweet n Sour Pork, Steak in Black Beans, Fried Rice .... this is the wrong place for all of that! My Ripples experience started some 20 years ago (close to it) when they had their 1st venue in Malvern, opposite the road from where they are now, on Glenferrie Road. This Bentleigh venue had a rocky-start with some bad press, but I have never stopped my patronage here and in Malvern. Extremely good wholesome Cantonese fare .... PS: And for the uninitiated ... YES, Yum Cha is EXPENSIVE, here and everywhere else that serves Yum Cha : Budget for $40-$50 per person if you wish to have a filling Yum Cha meal!!
Kat23
Don't understand the poor reviews. The most beautiful spring rolls and bbq pork and very affordable. We will be back to try yum cha soon!!
Mark
Yum cha was nice but expensive. WE went here as we were told they had really nice yum cha. So we went on Sunday. Most of the yum cha had a heavy seafood influence ( guess you might expect that given their name). So we had and tried a lot of the dumplings that did come around. When we got the bill it was $94.70. Very very expensive knowing that we can get the same thing in CBD for $50.

Wont be going back.

I rate the yum cha here as one of the best in Melbourne. It's certainly not the cheapest but I can't think of a better yum cha place and I love yum cha and eat it regularly. The staff are very friendly, place clean, dumplings fresh and plump and most importantly full of flavour. It's worth the money! Its consistently good too (i now go here regularly) and every dumpling variety I've had is top quality. Gold leaf burwood is also good but I like ripples better I think. I used to like shark fin inn in the city but quality has seriously dropped & today I had bland, small & chewy dumplings. It just reinforced how good ripples is and has made me want to give them a review they deserve.

I have been here for dinner only once and you could have a yum cha dinner if you're happy with about 3 options. Food good but expensive & I think they use cheaper filler veg like celery too much. I think I'll stick with lunch yum cha.

Go for Yum Cha. NOT Dinner!. We've been here for Yum Cha a couple time including for our daughters 21st. and enjoyed the experience. On Saturday we went there for a birthday celebration. The entrees came out within an appropriate amount of time and were quite delicious. Then we waited. A nice steady stream of food seem come from the kitchen as the Chinese families who came after enjoyed a nicely paced meal of steaming of food. The owner came passed and seemed perplexed when we aske where our food was. In a flash a vegetable hot pot for the vegetarian on our tabel arrived. The rest of the party waited. Hailed another waiter and the boss reappeared and suddenly bowls of rice appeared and our spirits and expectation rose. Still we waited. The owner came passed by again, noting that we still we hadn't begun our mains, having waited nearly an hour, as the tables that came after us, were either eating desserts or leaving. Then WAM! Everything arrived at once. A table full of hot food and cold rice that had to be replaced. The unpleasant tension created by tardy delivery of dishes significantly reduced the enjoyment of our meal. The service was sloppy wiith food lazily served and requests frequently misinterpreted and there was a distinct lack of care. This may seem harsh but the $240 bill for 5 for average food, the Peking Duck good but poorly present, would demand a much more pleasant experience.

Never disappoints. Ordered the sliced beef hotpot and pan fried barramundi with the ripples fried rice. Food just melts in your mouth. Ideal for large groups and is family friendly. But make sure you book ahead.

The wait at this place is HORRENDOUS!! We arrived at the restaurant Friday night for dinner and we weren't served for 20 minutes, and after a further 15 minutes we've yet to receive even our entrees. I've received better service at a rubbish dump! The prices are ridiculous for the portion size, and we were completely ignored until we received our food! Never coming back again.

Very impressed . Have been to many top notch yum Cha restaurants so I know good yum Cha when I taste it :) it really was great food. Very good sizes.. All the dumplings were packed with seafood not fillers like bamboo shoots. The dumplings were large and all the food was fresh and very tasty . Service was quick, they kept the trolleys coming around often and cleared our table of empty dishes very quickly . They also made sure we had water in our glass. Very nice place and good value for money considering the quality . I will add my mother got a tad frustrated because the lady that was telling us what food was on the trolley spoke too fast.. But I have found every yumcha restaurant does this so I cannot really call it a fault. Will defiantly return to stack on some extra kilos !!!

Delicious and Great Service!. My mother and I took some family friends down from Brisbane to Ripples for dinner. It was a Thursday night and not very busy but it always has a classy ambiance. The service was excellent. The waiter helped all four of us make decisions about which meals to choose as we were all indecisive as the menu is of a decent size and everything sounds delicious!

We shared vegetarian spring rolls, fried crab on bamboo sticks, green tea, rice (steamed and fried), Mongolian beef, chicken and ginger hot pot, and prawns and vegetables in a mild sort of red sauce. All food was aromatic, tasty and with fresh ingredients and not at all oily. Our tea and water cups were always refilled when needed and most of the time without asking. A couple of times the waiters would ask how our meal was and if we needed anything more.

At the end of the meal, we were served with a piece of juicy watermelon and kiwi fruit. None of us could fault them at all and although our generous family friends insisted on paying the entire bill, we could tell they thought the bit extra you pay over your average Chinese place was well worth it!

My family are regulars and we will continue to be! Lovely evening :)

Delicious Yum Cha. We went with the family for Yum Cha on a Saturday. We were greeted warmly and shown to a large table. Food came out quickly and there were many traditional offerings as well as the esoteric. Service was quick, friendly and efficient. Everything was hot and tasty. The 18 month old was indulged by the owner and his poor table manners (learnt from the family dog) politely ignored. He was even given special treats. He was amused by the fish tanks and other children and then subtlely whisked away by his considerate mother, prior to his apparently inevitable meltdown. The staff quickly removed any evidence of his canine inspired culinary consumption and we finished a lovely meal peacefully, with tea, mango and coconut jelly. All in all a lovely place to eat, kid and adult friendly with loads of variety.

No Service. Tried this place for the second time. The first time I was with a group and I enjoyed the experience. Peking Duck was excellent. On my second visit with a friend, I could not get any service. It appears that they have a waiter for drinks and a waiter for food. The first waiter that approached us after 10 minutes asked if we would like to order drinks. We replied by advising that we are ready to order drinks and food. This must have confused him, as he just walked away and our table suddenly became invisible, no one wanted to serve us. We eventually walked out. Waiting 20 minutes and still not having a drink on the table when the restaurant was half full is not my idea of service. Not sure if I will risk going back.

First Time. Went there tonight on a whim after driving past it numerous times and then jumping on Urbanspoon to see if it was worth giving it a go.
After having a look over the menu we decided to go with the Banquet B to try a little of everything.
The calamari was extremely salty to the point where I had to remove the crust, and the dumplings were not very tasty either..
The peking duck pancakes were the highlight but unfortunatley the serving compared to the other dishes was very small.
I didnt have a terrible experience, but for the cost and quality of the food I dont think i will be returning.

Usually awesome - though let down today.... Steamed dumplings should come out steaming - not luke warm. Sort it out.

Great Yum Cha. I have eaten here many times over the last 12 months and found everytime to be fantastic. The food quality is great and I have never been concerned about any quality issues. Service is consistently great and prompt

The crispy roast pork is lovely, Sui Mai tasty and BBQ Pork Buns sweet and sticky

Great place for a feed, Enjoy

For the love of God please do not eat here! The amount of times I have seen this place in the local paper and the Herald Sun about being charged with unsafe food handling...ugh!

Good standard asian food. Had a livingsocial voucher, pretty good service, 6 boxes of yum cha was a lot for two people! wouldnt go out of my way to go back but good experience :)

Great quality. Excellent quality. Haven't had a bad meal yet.
Probably a little more expensive than I would expect for Chinese food, but it is worth the extra.
Ordered Peking duck on the weekend which was home delivered stone-cold, but other than that I don't have any complaints.

Consistently good. Another Sunday yum cha at Ripples. The food is consistently of a good standard. The variety is reasonable. The roast duck, chicken and pork are good. One of those places you can confidently go to anytime for a reasonably priced good meal.

"OKAY" .. For the price and area it's acceptable .. It's not bad, but not brilliant either .. It's okay .. The spring rolls were nice

Tried Ripples for the first time tonight,as other restaurants in the area had been a let down. The food was fresh, tasty, and the portions were large for take away.Very happy and will go back.

Back on Track!. Was great, then a hiccup, and now back on track.

Is still seriously good for a local Chinese restaurant in the area. Always manages to get itself well packed out most nights, which surely has to be testament to the food quality it produces.

The sizzling Mongolian Beef is terrific very flavoursome, and the lemon chicken is always good.

Yum Cha is a delight to indulge in, especially around Sunday at lunchtime when you are looking for something to take a little time, to dwell over and enjoy with good company.

Portions are generous, well priced and always boasts fast and efficient service. The bar is well-stocked with a variety of beers wines and spirits.

Prices are competitive without being over the top.

Ripples Bentleigh. I was once their customer , loving their food and everything until the aricle on leader saying their food was potentially contaminated., then i stop going there and recently i saw leaders again they improved receiving 5 star food and safety rating. So i dont know about u guys maybe i would give them another chances since i like their food so much at the start.
The article on leaders
http://moorabbin-leader.whereilive.com.au/news/story/restaurant-goes-to-top-of-the-class/
