Review Warung Agus - Melbourne

Linh Nguyen
I never had a chance to dine-in with a-la-carte menu but the set menu and their takeaway boxes were excellent. There is so much food so do come with empty stomach, might as well fast for 12 hours before you come. The food was wholesome, nothing pretentious, just authentic and flavoursome. Great and fun service too.

Lovely ambience Friendly service So so taste for the food here. I literally won’t come again and won’t recommend for any friend to try even one time. so I can’t rate it more than 2 stars If u r here for tasty food, do not come, what u got is over priced. And nearly all the sides for every single fish r same. The whole eating experience was super boring. I know too many Indonesian restaurants r much more tasty than this place 120dollars for the food on these pics is super not valuable. I think all the 5 stars reviews came from people don’t care that much for the food itself but more into the vibe or whatever~

Never ending array (and quantity!) of delightful Balinese dishes with the feed me menu! Be prepared for 2-3 hour eating experience if you are opting for feed me menu option.

The best and most authentic Balinese food we ever had in Melbourne. Babi Guling and sate lilit are super delish. A bit pricey, but really worth it.

I thought the food was pretty good. The homemade sambal sauces were really nice. A small menu, so it's easy to make decisions. The casava crackers were probably my favorite.

I had a wonderful time here. Warung Agus has a warm atmosphere, delicious food and our host was so welcoming and attentive to our large group. I will definitely come back and recommend this restaurant to friends 🙂
Hello. imnikki
We tried the Ayam Betutu, Original Nasi Campur, Ubi Goreng, Gado Gado and of course, their signature dish Babi Guling. Amazing flavours, and cooked to perfection. The crispy crackling and tender meat of the Babi Guling makes it a definite must try. If you haven't tried Balinese food, then you must head here! Super friendly and down to earth service too so you'll definitely enjoy your experience here.

Food was delicious but bit pricey, receipt was hand writing , staff actually Charged us $18 extra when we asked for it we just got half back and they were picked up the notes from the tips bin to us ….

Incredible Balinese food!!! The meat was tender and the flavours blew me away. Highly recommend. My new favourite restaurant! The do take away packs during the covid-19 crisis and we shared the original nasi campur - perfect amount of food for 2 people and a nice variety of things to sample.

Delicious Balinese style cooking, runs by really lovely people. It’s actually my local and I’ve been back here twice. Sate lilit, nasi campur and babi guling are fantastic. They also have a decent drinks list. Everything is reasonably priced and service is also top notch.

Can’t get enough of this place. Family run business with superb service & equally amazing food. If you haven’t tried this place, it should be on your must-visit list. Warung Agus caters for vegetarians, vegans, & meat eaters alike. On our recent visit, we had one of the banquets & we were so full afterwards; so the best bet is to turn up with an empty stomach.

Warung Agus is definitely one of our fave places to get Balinese food here in Melbourne! Everyone is so welcoming and the food is amazing!
Our faves and go-to are the Babi Guling and Sate Lilit Babi - I swear we always order this when we’re here!
They also have great Ayam Betutu!
And to complete your meal, don’t forget to add sambal matah to your dish! Perfection!

Really enjoy dining in this restaurant. Have been several times. Staff/owners are very friendly. Real family owned vibe. Food is great, Nasi Campur and Gado Gado are standout dishes. Plenty of vegetarian/vegan options. Babi Guling (suckling pig) tastes just like you would get in Bali. Avocado juice is a winner. #tasteofbali

I had babi guling, tempe jagung, and cumicumi. I waited for more than 1 hour to get the food, and it was not worth at all. Babi guling is 100% different from Indonesian Babi Guling, it’s just 5/10. Cumi cumi is the worst one, it’s 1/10. Tempe Jagung is quiet good 6/10. Chilli Balacan 7.5/10, Sambal Matah 6/10, Signature Chilli Sauce 5/10. The portion is quiet small for the price, especially for the cumi cumi.

The best part was Babi Guling! Even in Bali we could not find the roast pork taste like that. The friendly staff and owner, always make me want to come back. Welldone Warung Agus!
Eatwithbonny
The restaurant have strong balinese vibe. Staffs are really nice and kind.

Ordered Nasi campur, ayam panggang and gado gado. Food did take awhile to be served. My favourite was their gado gado. The other dishes were okay to me.

Will I be back? Prob?

The babi guling dish itself has no taste of a real “babi guling” like in Indonesia. There’s no babi guling taste at all.

Delicious, authentic Indonesian Food! Very friendly service and servers keep you in the loop to let you know when meals are coming :)

Before I went to Bali I came here! I had never eaten Balinese food! I loved this venue so much and the staff were all female which was so empowering! But their food was absolutely amazing!! Which made me so excited to go to Bali!!!
The energy and vibe of this place is so blissful! Highly recommend

We have reconnected with one of our past favourite restaurants.
This authentic Balinese restaurant was one that we frequented often and then after moving away and also becoming vegan, we lost touch.
Then being back in Melbourne for our wedding and looking for a memorable night for our last meal in the city, we came across Warung Agus and realised that they offer ( and always have, we just never realised being meat eaters at the time ) a large variety of vegan dishes.
Their food is awesome, authentic and magical.
The owners and staff which are family, are friendly and inviting and make the atmosphere amazing.
Highly recommend for a wonderful evening with beautiful food and a revisit of Bali.
Been coming to this place for years. Better to make reservation. I’ve found the service pretty slow. It could take a while to get your meals to be served on your table. Last time we were here, they were quite busy. I’ve found better to get a take away or come here for an early dinner. You should try the Ayam Bekakak .. pretty tasty :)

A lovely Balinese restaurant with equally lovely decor. The service was fabulous and the waitress was very accommodating with a guest having some food intolerances. Delicious meal and very tasty.

Very kind service and friend atmosphere. Food is so delicious. Highly recommend!
We ordered Mie goreng ayam and udang mebasa Santen. Mie is great. Udang is not my preference.
Bubuh injin and kue Dadar as dessert, they are quite fresh for me. Love it, especially bubuh, awesome!

Exceptional service and delicious food!
My partner lives in Bali and we came with very high expectations. These were not only delivered but surpassed! We'll definitely return!
If you're feeling the Bali blues and need something to remind you of the awesome food, this is the place to come to! Thank you to the ladies who were serving us also made the experience even better. Mona Koandi
Having bookmarked this restaurant a while ago, I finally got the chance to visit with Tim.E and his partner. Bali is one of my favourite places so I was curious to know whether Warung Agus could replicate some of the amazing flavours that comes out of Bali.

We walked in without a reservation, fortunately we were seated and the waitress provided great service.

We all ordered the gin cocktail and that was absolutely amazing, I wish we had time to have another! All the dishes were ordered were outstanding, the flavours did take me back to Bali. We ordered a fish dish, a chicken curry and their famous pork that comes with crackling, aw ma gaaawd!! That crackle was sensational and I was trying to be polite by not eating it all! Haha

A real winner here and would happily come back again if in the area. Great food and great company as always.

Looking for somewhere nice to eat tonight my partner and I met Simmyeats.Melb for dinner and she recommended this restaurant.

Well as you know service in my books is really important and tonight the service was fantastic. I explained to the waitress that we had limited time tonight and he made sure that we well catered for quickly and the service was faultless, thank you.

I can’t remember the names of the dishes at this Balinese restaurant but the atmosphere was great experience.

We all had a gin cocktail which was amazing... phew it was just delicious! A must try.

We shared a pulled pork w cracking dish which was moorish, a chicken dish which was really tasty and a chicken dish combined w some really spicy sauces and a fresh chilli dip and I was in heaven!

We vacuumed the dishes because they were so good, and bursting with flavour. I had a great feed w excellent company and we all agreed that we going back for seconds lol.

A friend recommended this place and we were not disappointed.
The flavours took us back to our time in Bali.
The fish was a real winner within our group as well as the chicken skewers with the peanut sauce. The sauces to serve as a side alone were worth going back for alone.
Staff friendly and attentive.
Portion sizes left both meat eaters and vegetarians with full satisfied bellies.

Came here for Mother's Day tonight - was a very enjoyable evening. The warm ambience and greeting - to the smell of Bali too. Everything was top notch. I HIGHLY recommend getting the Eggplant dish, it was definitely the highlight of the foods we ordered. If you come in a group, you'll need a few large dishes to feel content/full. For dessert, we ordered the special, which was banana free with vanilla ice cream and susu Bali coffee. The staff are absolutely wonderful and even cracked a few jokes with us. Definitely will be back in the near future.

Had dinner here tonight, the vegan options were delish!! Got the small plates and I’m still so full. The lady who I assume owns it was so lovely and accommodating. I will go back there all the time 😊

I love this place. They serve amazing food with warm and friendly service. They also have really great options for vegetarians and vegans. Warung Agus is a Melbourne institution!

This lovely family run restaurant has THE best Balinese I have ever tasted. Great choices for vegetarians and vegans. It feels homey, has good vibes and you are well looked after. And they do delicious express boxes for takeaway! A Melbourne institution & Highly recommended :)

Disclaimer - we are nightmare guests as I have coeliac disease and my son is allergic to all nuts. Compared to most restaurants, the staff are extremely knowledgeable about both of these issues and didn't make me feel like I had to continually apologise or bring out a medical certificate to prove that the allergies were genuine. They are friendly and efficient and more importantly, the food is fresh and delicious. The sticky pork ribs are to die for!!!

I have been enjoying Warung Agus's authentic fare since it opened many years ago!! The food is always delicious and always resonates with authentic Balinese cuisine.. Terima Kasih Mary and Team ..xxx

The drinks order was instantly forgotten and took 10 minutes to arrive. We politely waited 40 minutes before asking where our shrimp crackers were, which require next to no preparation, only to be told they had been forgotten but we would not be charged. They showed up a minute later with the mains. They were not omitted from the bill at the end and I was treated rudely when I asked. Even though the food was lovely, the poor service won't be forgotten.
Chad
The food was not worth the value for money as it was very bland and very small portioning for the price. I would not recommend this place as there are better traditional Balinese restaurants out there and the Babi guling was the worst I've ever had ! Would rather go for a macas run
John
Excellent food with friendly service. Balinese cuisine so has Pork (Babi) dishes. Good wine list at reasonable prices. For those who want to try a distinctly different cuisine of Indonesia.
TheyCallHimX
Love the food here. Especially the eggplant based dishes. Also the satay wings were delicious. Both go really well with a side of rice. And nice to see they do smaller servings now which means we can try more of their dishes without blowing the bank.

Didn't take many photos here cause I was super hungry and the lighting isn't the best anyway. Wish it was a little brighter in here. But that's just my opinion. Maybe people like the atmosphere.

Staff are always lovely here and laid back.
Will be back again.

The restaurant has just opened for Sunday lunch and our group of 11 took advantage. None of us had ever been to Warung Agus but I'd been tipped off the food was great. My info was right - the food is outstanding and very good value. I had been told that the portions weren't large but we were pleasantly surprised and could have easily done without entrees. The favourites on the table seemed to be the calamari entree and the ribs - both devoured like it was our last meal. The service was terrific even though the place filled up during the afternoon. Drinks menu is broad and reasonably priced. But if a surprise that it's not a BYO but it didn't slow down the pace! Highly recommended for a pleasant Sunday afternoon.

One of the best restaurant to represent balinese food. Babi guling, pork ribs, sate babi lilit & ayam negara were soooo damn good. Must try for you who like pork dishes & indonesian food!!
Caroline Arman
The best way to enjoy the menu is just to ask the Maitre D what to order. That said, their signature Babi Guling is to die for. Everything at Warung is like a little corner of heaven plucked out of Bali.

Food is more like Nepali-Indian-Western fusion, but that's the norm in Melbourne and I've yet to come across a truly authentic Daal Bhat. Having said that it doesn't taste bad.

it was slightly hard to find the place today when we went there because the road was dark, raining and so cold, but it will much easier if the weather is fine, but this place is all the way too worth it to find it. all I can say is just, it feel like home!
love the food
love the atmosphere
love the beautiful decorations
the place is clean and beautiful with their beautiful roses
service was thumbs for Ibu merry
food came out fast. I want to rate 5,5 but unfortunately it has only 5. really recommended Balinese restaurant.

Quite an authentic Balinese food experience in Melbourne....

You can't miss this place while driving down Victoria St, towards King St, half of the rainforest in Kuta are on the footpath right in front of this traditional Balinese restaurant ;-) just kidding.

Simple, dimly lit, Bali inspired decor, legong music, Batik table cloth and a prominent print of Indonesia's first President, Soekarno gracefully watching this establishment, also you won't miss that Indonesia 70's enamel plates for your meal, it makes a lot of clinging noise with your crockery , what a great childhood memory ;-)

Foodwise, the menu is as close as you can get to an authentic food experience in Bali or Indonesia; sate lilit, gado-gado, etc. One thing for sure it has better quality of ingredients; Chicken, Meats, etc. A bit of fusion too on their menu too.

Two world apart in terms of service, "beli" (big brother) Agus is a perfect portrayal of a Balinese man, he will greet you, check your family, work, very lay-back, approachable, friendly, happy and he will set up/tell you what to eat for you, just genuine, while the madam is the total opposite and abrupt at times, perfect combo.

Always enjoyable to taste a bit of Bali in Melbourne, especially Winter times, don't have to fly for 6 hours to Denpasar.
Emmasutton2001
I ordered the takeaway vegan stir fry for $15. Delicious food and flavour, lovely packaging, perfect portion size and they were more than happy to make it onion and garlic free. I'll definitely visit again when I'm in the area!

Great food and friendly service. I love it and I will return for sure. Bintang and the fish were my favourite, also loved the lemongrass and chicken.

Love the atmosphere. The staff are really friendly and the food is amazing~! I would definitely recommend eating there. You will need to book on the weekends. It gets crowded.

This is a great place to come for a cuisine that is certainly underrepresented in Melbourne, especially considering that Bali is the new Mornington Peninsula. While distinctly south Asian, Indonesian cuisine, and even more so the more regional Balinese food has a lot to offer.

Best dish here is the roast pork, but I've not had a dish here I have not enjoyed. Satay and mi goreng are also due a mention, and the desserts are worth a try for something a bit different. More than ample list of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.

Family run and very friendly service. Interior borders on twee, but it isn't bad by any means.

Atmosphere: 2.5/5
Foods 2.5/5, definetly the traditional foods (Ayhan betutu and Babi guling) were not taste the same with local food.

Service 2.5/5

Great food, portions perfect for sharing, all very fresh tasting, and catered for vegetarians superbly. Great atmosphere, lovely music and friendly staff.

This is a nice place to show off to friends and family you care about who like to try Balinese food, and are interested in spicy and tasty food. It's not a place I'd go to every week or month simply because it is quite expensive. However, it's a special place to go to once in a while and really enjoy the whole experience.
Goodhearted
On arriving at Warung Agus for some traditional Balinese cuisine, we were greeted by a blanket of fresh rose petals on the footpath in front of the restaurant - a welcome sight juxtaposed with the red-eyed North Melbournites stumbling towards us before we entered. Once inside, the abundant greenery and Balinese decorations made for a perfect setting to our night. There were a number of dishes marked (v) on the menu and we were delighted to learn that dairy is rarely used in Balinese cooking (aside from ice cream in the dessert menu), so all of the vegetarian options were also vegan. The four of us were feeling free and easy so we let our waiter choose four vegan dishes for us to share. First to arrive was the Toge ($20), which is a traditional Balinese gado gado with steamed veggies and bean curd in a rich peanut sauce, topped with cassava crackers - which were a bit li

Since 1989, the family-run, family-friendly Warung Agus has been sharing incredible Balinese food with the people of Melbourne. Traditionally, a warung is a casual place, where people stop by to grab their lunch as they go about their daily business. But this warung is something a bit special. Much cheaper than even an on-sale Jetstar flight to Denpasar, a meal at this restaurant can give you a serious break from the real world and a taste of the rich, warm and relaxed Balinese foodie culture. The menu is ideal for groups of people who all have their own weird food things.
Fatboo
I found the flavours to be subtle and nuanced, which correlates with how pleasant and gentle the Balinese people tend to be.

The food tasted okay but unfortunately, the service was quite slow. We finished everything before the last dish came. We didn't feel like eating anymore.

Worth it for the price, and a great taste of Bali in Australia. I'm quite partial to chicken satay, and this was one of the best I've had in ages. Friendly staff.
Helley01
Fabulous Balinese food in West Melbourne. I've been going to Warung Agus since it opened almost 25 years ago. The food is always excellent and the service is friendly and efficient. I can't recommend it highly enough for anyone who wants to try authentic Balinese food without the cheap tourist attitude. Some of the meals may seem a bit expensive but you are paying for first class food here not nasi goreng in a box.
The decor is delightful and provides a wonderful atmosphere in which to dine.

PS Reading some of the other reviewers comments - Don't complain about the 3% surcharge on credit cards, all restaurants have that they may not tell you. Don't complain about the other diners, that's not the fault of the restaurant unless they are causing a disturbance and the establishment hasn't managed it.
Don't complain about the staff, I have never seen anyone who works there be rude or inconsiderate to anyone who visits. A pity I can't say that about some of the customers.
Baliboy666
A taste of Bali !!!. How lucky we are to be able access such delightful cuisine so far from Bali.
I have visited on many occasions and have never been disappointed yet, unlike the many dozens of trips to the island of the gods!
Ibu oka could learn a few tips on how to do a great bubi guling.
Mary & Agus are fantastic hosts and will go out of their way to ensure a memorable evening, along with their dedicated staff.
Will continue to come back, definitely one of my favs.

Bonza Bali. Recently had the opportunity to catch up with old friends at a little restaurant in West Melbourne called Warung Agus. As we had recently been to Bali I was looking forward to some great Balinese food and was not disappointed. The service was brilliant the and the staff were friendly and welcoming. We met the owners who came and chatted with us and made sure all was ok it was just like being back in Kuta. The food was excellent and kept coming at just the right time so as everyone had time to eat and chat no rush.Highly recommend the Babi Guling, the Avocado was mouth watering and do try the Desserts. We had a fantastic night and the prices are reasonable also the Bin Tangs were icy cold. Thanks again to Mary, Agus and staff for a fantastic meal and night. I highly recommend this little Balinese oasis in West Melbourne .
Nikkilane0327
Fantastic Night. Great food, amazing flavours the Babi Guling is spectacular better than any I've had in Bali. Staff were friendly, warm and attentive. The prices are very reasonable particularly the banquets you will not leave hungry.
I highly recommend you give them a try, we (table of 8) all had a great night and will certainly go back in the near future.

Very rude woman. We booked table of six expecting something nice as we some of us had just come back from Bali and we so enjoy the food there.

The decoration of this restaurant was very warm , but the food was ordinary and very expensive. the service terrible.

The worst thing was the dragon lady who l have been told is the owner, she was so rude.
we will not go back and l am a bit embarrassed that l took my friends there.
Mark Goldberg
Another fantastic meal set in a incredible atmosphere!

This is the best Balinese restaurant in Melbourne, in fact one of the best restaurants I've ever been to! The food is so authentic and delicious. The staff are so lovely. This has been a family favourite growing up and continues to impress every time I go. I highly recommend the nasi campur!
Genevieve G
We decided to eat at Warung Agus on Valentine's Day and it was a real disappointment. We ordered the Babi Guling and the pork was very fatty and the dish was extremely oily and lacking flavor. At $30 for the Babi Guling, We had expected much better quality food. The entree of cassava chips with peanut sauce was nice however the portion was not at all generous. We will not be going back nor would we recommend it to anyone.
JohnJohn
Came here for the first time tonight. Delicious food. Great variety of dishes at a reasonable price. Will definitely be coming back.

Overpriced!. Dishes were tasty, but they were so SMALL and so expensive!
Tragic_old_trout
Good food. I haven't been here since the 1990s. It was good back then (except for parking) and is now just as good (except for parking). but hey, this is a food review, not an ad for parking- loved the cuisine and found the price ok

Good food. But quite pricy, should be $$$

The word 'disappointment' pretty much sums up my time there.

(1) I made the reservation 3 weeks in advance requesting a nice table for a bday celebration. We got a small table close to the entrance, jammed next to the Balinese little hut they have built inside the restaurant. Every time someone opened the door, the freezing air blew in. I had to wear my scarf, beanie, jacket to keep warm.

(2) sitting inside the Bali hut was a family was 5. The father seemed to be suffering from serious throat/flu illness because he continuously made the hawking sound and sucking the yuk from his nose. It was so disgusting having to hear it at every few seconds interval. I kept picturing him in Bali, typical Aussie bloke who likes to hang out in Bali, and him hawking away. Very unappetizing.
(3) The restaurant was full and we only had a menu between us. We were promised another menu when available but it never came. Took abt 15 mins before we got the attention of the people working there to take our food and drink order.
(4) Food took abt 30mins to arrive. We ordered 3 dishes, lots of food for 2 and they were expensive (~$30 each) but it was a bday. 2 dishes came out luke warm. As the table was small, we helped to move things around the table so the waiter could put down our dishes; he left one of the plate in an awkward position and just walked off. (Geez thx mate).
(5) we ordered a drink that cost $9. It turned out to be ordinary ice tea in a glass.
(6) we couldn't finish our food so asked for takeaway. Alas, we were then told that that it was against their health regulation policies so we could take any home; so $40 worth of food went into the bin.
(7) the bill was >$100. We wanted to pay with credit card, and was told there would be a 3% surcharge. By that stage, I felt like it might as well be a slap in the face.

It was a really stressful dinner. I had to call it a day as soon as I got home!!
Lovinspoonful
Nasty goreng. Very unsatayfied ....... TOO expensive bad service ordinary food !!! will never go there again . Some things tasted ok but no real flavour distinction between the various dishes . Mortified.
Iknowmyfood
Don't bother $30 for a blan.... Don't bother
$30 for a bland and small curry.
Treated like an inconvenience by the staff.
Never returning, don't bother
Ben Beh
Came here based on mostly rave reviews about the place but was mostly let down if it were not for the suckling pig we ordered which was a definite highlight. The prawn entree was too pricey at $16 for 2 pieces and the eggplant dish which we ordered based on reviews as well was very small serving and a bit too sweet for our liking (made with brown palm sugar). Would've probably given this place another try but for the price & serving sizes we've had better elsewhere.
Lolapi74
Wonderful food, great service and good timing just 1 thing dont go there if you dont like spicey food
Tia
Special experience. Firstly, the chef and his wife are the loveliest, most hospitable couple. Agus often comes out to ask how the food is, to have a chat to the customers, and his wife Mary does the same.

Foodwise it is very, very good - the eggplant - something I've had a little more recently - is positively heavenly. I think I've had most of the mains on the menu, all tasty, but the eggplant is really something else..

Everyone tells me the Babi guling (roast pork) is spectacular but I haven't had that myself.

I always enjoy it thoroughly. It is quality food with a personal touch.
Jen Dorjee
Used to go here years ago and recently went back for my birthday. so disappointed and so expensive for what it is. dishes too small to share (3 pieces tofu and eggplant $26..).
service average. will never go back :(
Corinne
Three of us ordered the eggplant and tofu, suckling pig, and Balinese chicken. Our favourite was the eggplant dish, the flavours were amazing and the entire plate was emptied in no time gravy and all!

Suckling pig was juicy and tender with nice strips of crackling on top. Chicken was great too, served in a watery sauce/soup that tasted authentically Indonesian.

My only complaint was the portions were a tiny bit smaller than expected (last time we ate here was two years ago) and cost $30 per person without drinks.
Don Walsh
A fave. Went last Friday and as always, the food was excellent. The eggplant dish is always a winner, along with the mie goreng, and the atmosphere lively. A bit pricey and service was a bit scatty (and please get EFTPOS!), but always worth coming in for.
DannyBoy
Senses are alive. In company with partner and son (aged 36), we entered a colourful, friendly and organised restaurant to the sounds of happiness. Customers were clearly enjoying their evening and staff were smiling. A table, menu and drinks offer came quickly. Questions re. menu were answered with enthusiasm, knowledge and more smiles. Our meals (pork and fish based) were delivered in reasonable time and then the fun began. Taste buds were alive! Every meal was so enjoyed by all (sharing took place as we argued who had ordered best!). Without being intrusive, service was excellent. We will return!
Danny
Amazing Balinese cuisine. Babi guling at its best in melbourne. Be sure to get a lot of sambal matah, so fresh and delicious!
James
Order the suckling pig. A great reminder of what good Balinese cooking is meant to be - not just iterations of Nasi Goreng and Satay. If you do go, make sure that you get to try the roast suckling pig - simply fantastic.
Melaleuca
Still really good. Been coming here for over 20 years, haven't been in for a while and went in a few weeks ago. Good to see Mary and Agus. The food is still great with Cumi Cumi and Tahu Estamawa as my old favourites, the roast pork is really worth trying.
Donna
One of my absolute favorites! Love the half chicken love the sides, love the fish dish, love the kooky decor. Would reccomend
KW
The food here is delicious - if I closed my eyes it smelt like I was back in a local restaurant in Bali. I can't remember the name of my dish but it was number 29 and had a sample of a few different dishes, including pork with satay sauce, chicken and crispy skinned pork (which was delicious). I really enjoyed my meal, as did everyone else in my group. My only negative comment is that I thought the dishes were a little overpriced, however the food itself was lovely. Would definitely return.
Sara Calleja
Fantastic!!. I went with a group of 9 here for the first time. It is not too often that EVERYONE loves their food, but we all did! I had the eggplant and tofu in coconut milk, sweet soy and spicy gravy. It looked a little small for $20, but it was just the right amount and it was amazingly tasty! We couldnt stop talking about how awesome the food was. will definitely go back and recommend to everyone!
LJM
Food was fantastic! Service was very quick and friendly. The crepes were a little doughy
Brando The Pig
Worried about this place as had overseas guests, took a gamble, paid off very nicely. As my introduction to Balinese food, i tried the standard proteins - pork, chicken, fish and found this place has showcased some beautiful flavour! I agree is slightly overpriced but is good for sharing amongst group of 4. Will be back, delicious!
Constant Traveller
Hmm?.... Tempeh good...everything else pretty ordinary. Was surprised at the high prices and poor service given other more positive reviews. I see many support Warung Agus as a 'stalwart'...can't for the life of me see why given huge range of great restaurants in Melbourne.
Andrew Phillips
Past use by date. High prices and shocking service.
Froodette
This has been a stalwart for years. Seriously exceptional food! Lovely, friendly service although sometimes a wait (they get very busy). The eggplant curry is unmissable - even for meat lovers. The Babi Guling is both deliciously cruncyh and incredibly moist (for pork) and the Ayam Betutu is a show stopper. The price is perhaps a little too high but to be honest there is no Balinese in Melbourne that comes close. You won't forget about the meal for a long time to come. Don't think... Just go!
Cassie
Great food! Friendly staff. Chilli sauce is hot!!
Ttds
Not a place for a large group!!. If you are looking for a place to go for a large group this is not it!! The food was quite tasty but at $45 a head and 16 of us there was absolutely no way we got $720 dollars worth of food. We were asked did we want more food before it actually came out. But lots and lots of crispy pappodum type snacks before any of the mains. What we got for the cost was outrageous!!!
BlueToad
BlueToad. When I saw that 90% of diners had recommended this restaurant I thought I was in store for a culinary treat. The place was quite full on the Friday night we arrived but after 30 minutes perusing the menu I had to ask the waiter if we could order. We had the calamari for entre. Quite tasty but very tough. The Gado Gado was overcooked and the vegetables were LIMP and 90% bean sprouts. The sauce was peanutty but very gluggy. The waiters were very friendly and tried hard to please but having been to Bali and experienced food there, maybe I was expecting too much.

Long standing Delicious Balinese. Warung Agus is a long standing classic which never fails to deliver an exceptional Balinese Feast!
Gorgeous atmosphere with friendly staff and is beautifully decorated, including a fantastically fun raised table on a cushioned bed! If Balinese cuisine is new to your palate I recommend the dish Nasi Campur, a delicious combination of a little bit of every flavour on offer. A brilliant dining experience!

Delicious. The Vege eggplant dish is one of the most wonderful things I have ever tasted. In fact, I have dreams about it. You are fabulous Warung Agus.

SwItches on young male waiter really knew the food and menu which was a nice change. Babi filing (suckling pig) was high quality - most, great crackling. Just missing some offal and urab and it'd be pretty close to Ibu Oka! Better entree/accompaniment selection would be good. Perhaps downsize the long list of mains accordingly to give more choice and ability to share, as cliched as it is now, it suits the food.

Great food even better ambience. I would have to say that this is the best Asian restaurant I have eaten at. The vibe of the place is incredibly warm and familiar. The fact that its an old terrace house may have something to do with it, but its the eclectic and completely unpretentious crowd that makes the atmosphere just right.

The food, although dearer than your average asian restaurant is excellent. We had the veg crackers and satay sauce as well as the avocado and mushroom in coconut sauce as an entree. Avocado has never tasted so good. We had a plater of roast pork/chicken, and satay pork/chicken/tofu for main. This was very substantial and great for sharing. We then had the tofu and shitake mushrooms in gravy. This is the best asian dish I have ever had in Australia! This dish was worthy of any two hat restaurant. The richness of flavour was remarkable.

If that was not enough even the sweet lemon juice with sugar was incredible

Please do yourself a favour and spend a night at Warung Agus. You wont regret it!

I've been a regular since 1995 and counting.... That's right. Since my first introduction to Mary and Agus in 1995, we've kept going back - 15 years later and counting. Love love love this restaurant. Notable that in '95 it was listed in the Cheap Eats Guide and it used to be super cheap. Time marched on it as it does and it now gets a guernsey in the Good Food Guide. The banquet used to be $22, now it goes for $45 I think. We normally get a bunch of stuff to share so not 100% sure.

This is one of the few restaurants I have made a point of trying *everything* on the menu. Favourites include: avocado entrée with coconut sauce; chilli muscles; west bali chicken; gado gado; and there's a dish towards the back of the menu which I affectionally think of as 'big plate 'o' food'. Item 24 or 25 in the mains?? It's a selection of the side dishes which I get with a couple of satays. The pork's nice too, oh, how to choose favourite??!??!?

Warung Agus is great for vegos and the like as Mary is a vego herself. Other dietary needs are well catered for.

It may not be fine dining, it isn't trying to be - the very green carpet would be a tip there. Warung Agus is a delightful little local which keeps on trucking on with delicious food.

LIVING LEGEND. I am writing a response to the ABOVE REVIEWS. Confusing service? Warung Agus is an AUTHENTIC Balinese restaurant with an actual BALINESE (yes its true) chef...I suppose all restaurants with confusing service last 20 YEARS in the melbourne food industry??? U honestly didn't have one positive comment for the 20 year old restaurant?
As for the second review it probably would have benefited you to have tried one of the what...10 other sauces offered on the menu? One thing about the Warung Agus staff is they pretty much always suggest people try DIFFERENT sauces eg...tamarind and palm sugar? Ginger, lemongrass and galangal?
WARUNG AGUS is a beautiful family owned and run restaurant...the flavours are beautiful, produce is fresh and the following is huge...to the 1st REVIEW...if you don't have anything positive to say...why say anything at all?

It's not great but it's ok.... If you're in the mood for peanut sauce then this is the place to come! The service is confusing?!

Good prawns, "ok" satay. Coming along to Warung Agus for our first time we were really excited - it had taken us a long time to move away from our favorites!
We had Spicy Prawns as a shared starter and they were SOOO tasty - coated with a delicate coconut sauce that had many spices within and not too hot. For those that "like it hot" you are given wonderful condiments of spicy chilli sauce (seemingly homemade) and a lovely shallot, lemon grass and chilli pot, which is semi hot but VERY tasty.
Following our promising starter we had the Chicken Satay and the Gado Gado (it was called something else but I have forgotten). The chicken was very tender and had wonderful char grilled bits (very tasty) and the Gado Gado had nice crispy salady bits with crisp prawn chips and tasty tofu - there was only one thing wrong with these dishes... they were coated in the satay sauce. Look, being fair, the satay sauce was "OK", but we really felt like we had peanut butter (blitzed peanut butter) on our plate - this is what it tasted like.
That aside, the ambiance is warm and comfy, our young waitress was attentive and friendly and the Lemon Blitz Waters are very refreshing - we'll give it another go sometime.
Thank you for a lovely evening! :O)

Despite Indonesia’s proximity to Australia, my exposure to Indonesian food is pretty slim. And no, packet mi goreng most certainly does not count!
