The BEST meat pie I’ve ever tried in Melbourne. No adding any complicated flavours, very home-made and big portion of meat, with some soft potato and veg inside, well-balanced. And wrapped with the perfect pastry...very buttery and perfect texture! Worth a try!!!Definitely recommend!!!And the staff is super friendly and nice. This place made my day☺️.
Came here cos people were raving about their fantastic Malaysian styled snacks. Their curry pies are really fragrant with a crispy pastry shell and the curry chicken are really aromatic. Their Malaysian Siew Baos are the best in Melb ! The cafe owner is a friendly charitable bloke who gave away free meals to needy students. Happy to support a local Cafe especially when the food is good and the owner is a decent charitable bloke !
Common Ground Coffee cafe. Serving familiar as well as innovative food in West Melbourne. This corner cafe is located a short tram ride from Vic Market. Popular with the locals and attracting more and more people from further suburbs through word of mouth! The new management took over about seven months ago. The menu is Western and Asian. They have introduced food that is new yet familiar to many. The baked Char Siew Bao is a must have. This is a baked bun with a tasty pork filling with a slight sweetness. The bun is soft with a bouncy texture and an outer baked crust. The Curry Pie is a round pastry filled with a curry chicken and potato filling. This is also known as a curry puff. The pastry of a curry pie or curry puff can make or break it. This pastry is flaky, layered, light yet has substance - very nice! Together with the tasty filling, this is satisfying to eat. I hear the Nonya Mee Rebus is tasty too, with their unique take on these noodles which are popular in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. A new dish is the Hainanese Chicken Chop served with a rich savoury sauce, served only on Friday and weekends - intriguing and on the “must try” list. The husband and wife owners of the business have a long history in the food business, with the wife an experienced pastry chef. She makes the pastries and other delicacies onsite in the Common Ground kitchen.
Great value, friendly service and delicious food. Food took a while, but it was worth the wait.
We had beef pie, chicken curry puff and bbq siew bao. Chicken curry puff was our favourite! The other two were delicious as well. Love the crust! It will be my go-to place whenever I have pastry craving! Good job, common ground!
Common Ground Coffee serves up a solid brunch selection and great coffee but that's just by the by. What truly sets this neighbourhood gem apart are the amazing pastries. Partners in business and life Anthony and Ing took over the cafe in June 2019 to share their passion of perfectly made pastries and gourmet pies.
Ing's extensive experience as a pastry chef at hotels has translated into stunning savoury and sweet delights that simply put a smile on your face. An absolute standout is the Malaysian style baked char siew bao. The pastry here strikes an amazing balance between lightness, crunchiness, crumbliness and simply melts in your mouth. The filling of pork is wonderfully savoury with just a hint of sweetness. This is certainly a crowd pleaser. Ing took us through the process of making the pastry - let’s just say it is a true labour of love!
You can't go wrong with any of the other pies either. The gourmet beef pie we had was equally delicious. Thick, buttery yet light pastry encased tender morsels of beef and gravy - it was a thing of beauty. And yes, there are even chicken curry puffs with flakey, crispy, layered pastry hiding luscious curry chicken inside.
If you have a sweet tooth, there are also plenty of options for you. Whatever you do, do not go past the fruit mince pies. These boast beautiful casings and fruit mince that boasts a wonderful depth of flavour.
Situated in West Melbourne right next to the Queen Victoria Market, Common Ground Coffee is a no-frills bakery and cafe that should be known for their amazing baked goods. With very affordable pricing over the board, you’d be silly not to try their hearty pies or massive sausage rolls for yourself!
Common Ground is a charming eatery run by a husband and wife team, serving up delicious baked goods and simple yet comforting food. All the pies and pastries are baked in-house everyday, and it's only here that you can get the Seremban Siew Pau.
For those who haven't heard of this, it's a super flaky buttery baked bun filled with savoury and sweet roast pork, and the defining characteristics is the double layer of crispy pastry. Here, I was whisked to heaven eating this. Perfect texture, and flavour is flawless. Come try it for yourself.
My friend and I also shared a butter chicken pie, and beef and veggie pastie. Both wowed us with its beautiful buttery pastry, and the freshest ingredients stuffed inside. Even the simple Green Brekky Salad mesmerised us with its bright and clean flavours, and this is a perfect summer salad.
Located just a short stroll away from Queen Victoria Market, do yourself a favour and come by to Common Ground for a meal before or after you head to the market.
We were invited to Common Ground Coffee today which is not only a cafe but essentially a pastry shop too with all cakes and pies passionately created in house.
We were extremely impressed by the capsicum chicken pie which had great flavour and exceptional pastry. We also tried an array of breakfast dishes including the sweet potato and corn fritters, the classic smashed avocado as well as the mango hot cakes. I loved the presentation of the hot cakes and the delicious mango compote with yummy mascarpone.
My chai was on the sweet side so I assume it was powdered but I tend to prefer them that way as opposed to overly milky. Next time you are at the Vic market I highly recommend you pop in for a pie
You can’t beat a good pie or sausage roll so when I walked in and saw hand made pies and sausage rolls I knew I was in for a treat.
And when the owner told me that his wife made all the pastries in this cafe, I was a happy camper lol.
Using a family Malaysian and Chinese recipe that has been perfected over time the pastry base on the pies were firm, buttery but unlike I’ve ever tried before, and in a good way.
I tried the red pepper chicken, with baby sweet corn, a shepherds pie, a red wine pie, and a pork and fennel sausage roll. I told you I like em hahaha
Thankfully my partner was with me! Phew lol.
All the pies had fresh ingredients, being cooked daily, and the owners wife has experimented with the ingredients to give them her own personal touch, and it works!
The pies had a flaky crust and the pork and fennel sausage roll was also a winner.
And I almost forgot about the corn and zucchini fritters that we had w a soft poached egg. This was really delicious, they had some great zucchini flavour and perfect for vegetarians.
My strong skinny latte was really good, with a nice flavour and some good milk froth.
To finish we tried a home made cherry ripe, which was much better than the one in a packet and a coffee flavoured eclair.
OMGosh did we roll out of this place hahaha but it was definitely worth the visit. And this place just up the road from the Queen Victoria Markets has easy street parking.
Thanks to the lovely owner and his wife for inviting us to their cafe.
I only have been to this place during this Lockdown 6.0
I loved the coffee experience here! The latte has not only a milky flavour but also has strong coffee flavour! Such good balanced coffee always!
(I found some place's coffee is only either too milky or too watery.)
I definitely would like to come back to try their brunch menu after this period!
The shop is also offering free coffee from 1-3.30pm during the lockdown.
I appreciate them as they are showing support to the local community!
Incredible coffee beans range. Creative fusion menu. Had a soft shell crab croissant with salad. Friendly staff.
The place was great and the service was excellent. Eggs on toast were over cooked, except for that everything was good
Food was great. Friendly staff and good service. Easy to park nearby.
Great customer service, super friendly, approachable and attentive! Food was also great. Good vibes and chill environment :)
Good quality coffee, ended up having two coffees.
