Review Royal Standard Hotel - Melbourne

Mandy P
Such a great experience (I’m writing this as a stuffed satisfied customer). The pub is very homey, and has an old school comfort vibe. I understand it’s a family run business, with majority of the menu being Italian. The portion sizes are enormous, which I loved. Meals are definitely value for money. We got the polenta chips, seafood pasta and the baked barramundi (which was on special). The seafood pasta was amazing. When I come back again (which I will), I will struggle to order something other than the seafood pasta (it was that good).

In Melbourne for work and stumbled into this lovely little pub. Had the rib eye two nights in a row and it was absolutely perfect. Asked for medium rare and got it bang on each night. The owner Lucy is a lovely Italian Australian and her son is the head chef. Great staff and excellent pub food. Will definitely be back

Awesome pub to visit, went during happy hours so pint of little creature pale ale is only 10 bucks with fish and chip goes smoothly! Just small thing the waiter forgot to bring the pepper to the table otherwise would be 5 stars!

Absolutely brilliant. Quiet Sunday afternoon pub with a few locals to watch Formula 1. Friendly and understanding staff. Kid friendly and accomodating for our 7yr old. Generous and fair staff and a relaxing environment after a crazy week. Wings were good, seats were comfy. Will visit again when back in Melbourne. :) Thankyou all for service today :)

We were looking for a place to eat dinner while we had to be in Melbourne. We went past the Royal Standard Hotel and were drawn by the large number of people here. It's easy to see why. The waitress, Lucy, was wonderful and made us feel really at home. She was also really attentive without getting in the way. The atmosphere just felt really friendly. Then came the food. The porterhouse steak my father had was a really good cut and cooked to perfection. It was so tender and juicy. The tuna and mushroom pasta I had (the photo was taken after I'd eaten a lot of it) exceeded my hopes for it. The tuna was tuna steak (not tinned!) and most of it just melted in your mouth. It was also way bigger than I thought. The prices were really good especially for the size. All in all it was a thoroughly enjoyable meal.

Great Spot, near to Flagstaff. Lots on menu to choose from, very good prices. We had Scallopini and Pescetore, both large serves and delicious. Staff very friendly.

Great customer service, not super packed, outdoor seating, great food

Staff was exceptionally kind, food was cooked to perfection and portions were more than any of us could eat. We plan on making this a routine family dinner at least once a month!!! Could not fault anything

Amazing pasta and good, great value and lovely staff. Always worth a visit when around this part of the city.

Best pizza I've had in years
Hello. Imnikki
Simmyeats.Melb suggested that we meet up here for pre-drinks and what a cosy spot this was. A local bar with a decent selection of drinks, and an all-round relaxed and casual vibe.<br/><br/>We arrived during happy hours and I had a house white while Simmy had a beer. The lady serving us was all smiles and very pleasant. A great spot to have a drink, and from the looks of it, a meal too.

I met Hello.imnikki here for a pre dinner drink, we just wanted a quick drink and this pub was a great place for that.<br/><br/>We arrived when it was Happy Hour! Perfect! I ordered a nice beer and Hello.imnikki had a white wine.  The barlady was very helpful is helping me choose a beer on tap, she was very nice and chatty too.<br/><br/>All in all a nice local pub with a good mix of tap beers and wine.

My friend took me there and highly recommend the seafood pasta with olive oil (not with tomato source). It is not an ordinary spaghetti marinara. It's true seafood. There is half crab, 3 big scallops, 3 big Tasmania black mussels, 3 big tiger prawns and calamari. And all fresh seafood not frozen. It was really impressed. Cooked nicely and very hot when came to the table. For all the pasta you can choose entree or main size. It gives the flexibility for small eaters. I also had the tiramisu to finished the meal. Homemade flavour. The portions were very generous and price was very reasonable. Staffs were very nice. Will definitely come back and recommend!

Best food money can buy, great atmosphere with a family fun restaurant, if you’re out in Melbourne and want quality food the Royal Standard Hotel will not disappoint.

I can not recommend this place highly enough . Had a function with 30+ people service was outstanding our meals were absolutely amazing and very decent servings. they were all served within 10 minuets so we all ate together. The function room was cosy with heating and close to the restrooms. Will definitely be going back! 😁

Went here with friends for a meal. Nice enough place for a generous classic pub meal. Nothing fancy, but a good variety of classics on the menu, and added bonus a small cabinet for gelato selections which were great for a dessert.<br/>

Went for a massage around the corner and was recommended to check out the Royal Standard - so we did. Popped by on a Football afternoon to find the pub spilling over onto the pavement with adults, children and a few dogs.Very friendly pub and the drinkers were friendly too. Had a very pleasant afternoon chatting away. Only has beer, wine and nibbles as we had beef cheeks bubbling away in the slow cooker. Shall go back another time for dinner.

Had Uber eats - ordered the Chicken Caesar salad and nonnas meatballs... bloody delicious. Huge portions, great flavour and value for money! The only thing i would comment on would be too maybe put the hot grilled chicken separate to salad so the lettuce doesn’t get wilted... thank you

From the outside I had low expectations however the food is amazing, owners are lovely and prices are so reasonable with well-sized servings. The seafood pasta, Parma and homemade gnocchi are delicious!

This place is fantastic.  Don't be fooled by the exterior, this is a great italian bistro with a bar attached. It's not fine dining nor does it pretend to be.  This is great quality bistro/trattoria dining at a very reasonable price run by a lovely couple who genuinely enjoy what they do.  We have let many people in on this secret gem and they too have gone on to become regulars.<br/>You would be challenged to find a better value place in Melbourne.

Excellent service. Great quality food. Looks like a pub but has an Italian family feel. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Cater to Coeliac and understand allergies. Worth it. Good family prices too. Hearty meals.

Went here for a work lunch on Friday and was not disappointed. I ate the Pescatore which was delicious 😋. My colleagues had the beef burger and Paella special and gave them rave reviews. Service is alright and vibes are good.

Quality Italian food at a reasonable price can be found on this quiet street. I've been here several times and the food is always lovely and the owners really take pride in looking after the customers. You may need to book in though if it is a Saturday night.

Fantastic meal and great, fast, friendly service! We started off with the squid (very tender), arancini & polenta chips which were all pretty good. Then we had the 4 cheese gnocchi which are probably the best gnocchi in town and we also had the cannelloni - all very generous serves. For dessert we had the homemade tiramisu and chocolate mousse which were great. <br/>Great location, reasonably priced, heaps of parking, highly recommended!

After finding this little gem by mistake about a month ago, I've since come here with family & friends every week and still bringing more people to try it out! It's a family run pub with an Italian inspired menu & sitting offering great pizzas, pastas and other meals!! The home made gnocchi is so fresh and tasty! Will be back.

Great family run pub near the vic market with tasty food. The owners here take great pride in what the do and go out of their way to look after their patrons.<br/>We had seafood paella yum worth a try if your in the area.

Fantastic little pub with an Italian themed menu serving delicious meals and decent size servings.<br/>We had home made gnocchi and veal scaloppine off the specials board. Our boys had some of the most tender calamari I have tried in a long while and a great pizza for main. Lovely, friendly waitresses and excellent service, highly recommended!

Came here for my friends birthday where we were in the private room. Really really enjoyed the pizzas we ordered. They were perfectly crispy with good flavours. We always ordered pasta which I enjoyed very much. if it weren't for the distance I would have to travel. I would definitely come back another time

This place is a ripper. <br/><br/>Crew in for a business lunch, and let me just say they killed it.<br/><br/>The lads were peckish, so we ordered just about every entre in the book. Arancini was the pick of the bunch.<br/><br/>The pizza was brilliant, and the wagyu burg, fresh as a daisy.<br/><br/>Attached to a ripping pub, only a short yelp for a pint.<br/><br/>Shit yeah, get your business lunches in here.<br/>Back for sure.<br/><br/>

A great night out! Food was delicious! The place is under new management and the menu is Italian/pub type food. We had the home made gnocchi with quattro formaggi sauce and it was one of the best we've had in Melbourne. Very well priced too so we'll definitely be back.

Slow cooking has become all the rage in the last few years, and for good reason. But the Royal Standard Hotel in West Melbourne takes it even further, and not in a good way, adding dreadfully slow service into the mix. The Royal Standard is an OK pub, with OK pub food, but that's about it. The night we went, the restaurant was booked for a blues guitar workshop - it seems to double as their function room, and is booked for that purpose fairly often. It's OK, I was assured, you can eat in the bar area and the only difference is that the chairs and tables aren't as nice. No worries there, then. However, with the restaurant area booked out, the hotel appeared to have given the restaurant staff the night off as well, leaving the barman to both run the bar and deal with the food orders. Not an ideal situation, as he was quite happy to do his usual bartendery things - wiping the bar, cleaning glasses, talking to bar patrons - when not busy serving, rather

When I first heard of The Royal Standard I was told it was a "country pub in the middle of Melbourne". I love country pubs, I love Melbourne, I was sold. We arrived at the fairly quiet pub, hidden just behind the Queen Victoria Market, and from what I could tell the description was totally accurate.

There is nothing royal about the food at The Royal Standard Hotel. At best it is passable run of the mill pub fare. That said, perhaps that is exactly what it seeks to achieve and does. Pork Chop served on a bed of creamy mash, spinach & apple cider sauce $24 The pork was dry. It was difficult to taste anything else apart from the generous serve of the mash that swam in the sea of cream. The apple cider sauce tasted like cream with little chunks of apple in it. Veal Limone â€" tender medallions in a creamy lemon sauce. Served on

Fantastic venue. Tuesday night wonderful Jazz night. staff are great. fantastic atmosphere.

Good family friendly pub.. A nice pub that is very family friendly. The carpet doesn't smell of beer which is a nice change. Menu is large and the food is brilliant. A great little local pub.

Value meal. So... lunched at the Royal Standard - your basic bistro in a small pub WITH NO CARDIES (big bonus IMO) and suitable for families. The meals are the sort to appeal to a wide range of people and are reasonable in price. Had a yummy steak with chips and salad (see pic) for $19. This is the kind of pub I like - unpretentious, relaxed, close to the city and yet not rowdy. This is a quiet spot at the weekend, and even though I've been there during the week, with QV markets going gangbusters The Royal Standard is just a block away from all this yet the city feels distant, and almost peaceful. Afterwards we took the kids to play in the park at Flagstaff Gardens - just a block away.

Apart from their usual good menu the Royal Standard Hotel seems to do some excellent one off theme evenings. I had the pleasure of attending their recent 7 course Game and Wine night. Excellent food from their new chef and matching wines with the wine maker in attendance. Thoroughly recommend watching out for their next special event.

Blind Wine Tasting with an Indulgent Degustation menu. A few weeks back a group of us arranged with Mark to have a Friday night "blind wine tasting" evening, complemented by Warwick’s (the new French chef ) 7 course degustation menu.<br/>Mark selected the wines, (a selection of NZ, Australian and imported wines) each being accompanied by one of Warwick’s mouth-watering specialities ... <br/>A particular favourite was the mushroom pie, but I was out voted when it was a “hands-down” vote for the fresh salmon roulade.<br/>What a fun evening, such great entertainment.<br/>...I have ‘spread the word’.... (because of our rave reviews) – we are heading back in a few weeks with increased numbers for a “bubbles” tasting together with sampling more of Warwick’s culinary successes.<br/>Mark and Warwick created a perfectly balanced menu full of flavour for our special evening, taking into consideration that a couple of us were vegetarian.<br/>Great opportunity to have a fun evening with great food and wine tasting for a group of friends, such good value.<br/> <br/>Thanks Mark - Great Evening - Judi

Mobile Review. Have been to this local pub several times and food and service are both great. Lots of menu choices and never had a bad meal. Keep up the good work.

The Royal Stsndard is your typical local pub. It's quirky & awkward and full of character, as is the food coming off the pass. The first thing you notice are the humongous portion sizes, so bear this in mind when ordering. In summary, both the food & service are a cut above which makes the RSH well worth considering when next in North/West Melbourne

Cheap and cheerful. Took my kids and my friends' kids here for lunch during school holidays. We also go there when visiting Melbourne for swim meets & etc. This is in a nice quiet area on the edge of the city near Flagstaff Gardens. Bonus for us is that there is no TAB (or whatever it's called in Victoria) or cardies, and usually some parking. Give me a small pub like this with a family atmosphere anytime!<br/>Lunch was cheap and quite nice. Fish and chips was the favoured fare and it was quite tasty. I've read some other reviews of this place and am wondering what the writers were expecting: a five star restaurant this is not, but you can't expect five-star food for $10 (or even $25 which seems to be ball-park pricing for an evening meal). There are no pretentions of grandeur at the Royal Standard: it's a simple friendly corner pub with simple pub meals. If you want something fancier, bring your wallet and go somewhere that this family, at least, can't afford!

Decent pub but don't order the parma or the chow mein.

Quiet little pub, no loud music or roudy patrons. Perfect spot for a quiet drink or dinner with the family. We didn't eat but the menu looked really nice, very traditional pub food ranging from bangers and mash to salmon risotto.

Excellent food, wine and service. This is a great pub with a friendly relaxed atmosphere. Food wise, the bruschetta (entree) was good, the salt and pepper squid (main) was great but the surprises of the night were the chicken skewers (entree) and the smoked salmon risotto (main) both of which were excellent. A good wine list and the coffees were also excellent, (my wife who worked as a barista couldn't fault them.<br/>We will definitely return.

Went here for dinner on a Wednesday night. Food was lovely, very large portions (one entree between 2-3 would have been plenty, I think) and the service was impeccable. The waitress was very attentive and a nice, friendly person. Our mains were great, husband had parma and I had trevally with Asian salad. Both were delish. For dessert I had a golden syrup pudding, which looked like it might have been a microwave Aunt Betty's variety. Other desserts (looking around the restaurant) looked nice. Good prices, definitely bang for your buck. Lovely atmosphere, it was quite full but surprisingly not noisy with plenty of room between tables. Standard pub menu. Would go back. :)

Another great pub food setup. It is nice and friendly.

Good pub food. Good value basic pub standards, like steak, schnitzels, parmas etc. . Also have a chef's specialities at top end prices, tried this but cannot recommend. <br/>Stick to the basics - its all good. Blues jam there every Tuesday night.
