Review Tadka Boom! - Melbourne

Ric Todhunter
Nice little Indian place tucked away in an "off the main road" lane. Prices are great and the food nice.

I found the food somewhat insipid. Options are limited. Would have to go again to check if the food is really bland or it was just that day.

I tried the chilli chicken souvlaki and liked the fusion. Perfect place for a quick lunch break

I've been going to this place for years and never been disappointed. Went back recently after a few months and found that the portions have reduced a fair bit. I ordered a 2 curry takeaway combo with rice, 1 veg and 1 non-veg. And with the non-veg I was literally served 3 pieces of lamb. Unfortunately, I didn't pay much attention when I was being served or else I would've definitely raised it with the lady that was serving me. My meal did not satisfy me at all. Guys you've been doing a great job always been happy with your food and have always been satisfied with your portions but not this time. Hope you'll take this feedback into consideration.

No metal re-usable cutlery available if you dine-in. Indian food is very nice but seriously small businesses must have dishwashers that make the cleaning process very quick and efficient… and even if they don’t, how long does is really take to clean a big batch of utensils? I try to avoid businesses if their management greedy and don't care about environment.

The make the best desert in Melbourne. The Berry malai is one the best desert they serve with sweet rasmalai topped with raspberry on top is such a lovely combination. Lovely ambience to chill out with a beer and some burgers .

Great place for lunch if you love indian food. Good service from the staff. Quick service. There is also indoor seating.

Tried via mealpal the other day. Good service and the food was o.k ( wish it was a bit more spicy) but unfortunately found a long strand of hair in my curry :(
The Hand That Bites
Great fast food that's full of flavour. Tadka Boom is more of a place where you grab a quick lunch, but the quality is good. They offer fusion dishes and twists on Indian classics. I had a really nice meal here and the service was excellent. The dhal was loaded with garlic and flavoured with sesame oil. This made is taste almost like hummus, it was unique. I also really liked their lassi, but the curries here are the star. I'll definitely return for lunch in the not too distant future.
Adhish Dhakhwa
Loved the curries here, the beef and lamb are to die for. You don't get a lot of that lingering spice smell after having them too. The price for them is great considering most other restaurants with good curries are a bit expensive. The ambiance is great as well with friendly and polite staff. The deals are great if you are keen to fill your self up.

Love this place! One of the best Indian restaurants in Melbourne since the new menu and new stuff came in earlier in the year I love going there even more!

My favourite is the butter chicken wrap, rice bowl and the naan sense tacos. The mango lassi drink is a must! The staff are always friendly and it’s a perfect lunch time meal.

About two years ago when this place had started I used to take my colleagues with me to eat here. I would not recommend it to anyone unless they up the game again. I went to have a Boomosa Salad today. It was $10.50, one hand full Coles salad some yogurt and two pakoras. So poor, this time they had no chutneys and also the quantity was worth $5 bucks.

If you are looking to get a good satisfying meal that does not make you feel like you are hungry even after you have eaten please never buy this Salad here.

I went for a lunch during weekdays. The quality of the food was poor. It was half cooked food, small quantity and not evenly warm enough. Will never waste my money again.

We bought a Groupon for 2 people to try out the restaurant. I have realised that it is next to impossible to find good Indian restaurants in Melbourne (not been to a single one that blew my mind!). However the flavours and spices are much appreciated by non-Indian tastebuds. To be fair to the restaurant & provide correct review, one of us is Indian & the other non-Indian. We ordered the below:

Butter chicken with white rice - Absolutely flavorless, wouldn't touch it again ever (1/5 by Indian), not as good as I tried at some other places but decent enough (3/5 by non-Indian)

Palak Paneer with brown rice - Couldn't even eat more than a spoonful (1/5 by Indian). The paneer is soft but the gravy has no taste whatsoever (2/5 by non-Indian).

Spinach Pakoda - Would happily eat again crispy & nice (4/5 by Indian). Wow so crispy & the tamarind chutney is to die fir (5/5 by non-Indian)

Mango Lassi - Too thick (2/5 by Indian & non-Indian both)

My first visit here was very satisfying! I loved the curries (butter chicken and chicken adraki), even though chicken adraki was too tangy to be eaten with salad!
In the second visit, I have realised that although the curries have a distinctive taste, they are too rich to be consumed in a single meal! This might be due to oil/cream put in the dishes to make them rich.
The end result...I started well but was not feeling great by the end of the meal...it was more of a baggage! 😞
Maybe they would taste better with chapati or naans, but not the best with rice, and definitely not with Salad!

Stumbled upon this Indian restaurant on Bourke st. love their modern decoration and interesting menu. Food is generous and none oily, value for money and tasty curries to choose from. Both curries and Mango Lassi is rich, creamy and delicious. Love their Tadka Taster Plate (choose 4 curries w rice and papadam)!
Laura
Delicious and healthy food at a reasonable price. Came in at the end of lunch time, manager and staff were friendly and accommodating. Good experience, will be back.

Yummy contemporary Indian with a modern twist. Don't go if you expect the usual Indian fare. This is new and different and authentically Indian. Spicy as you want. Well recommended.
Kell
I love the concept of a quick, hearty and relatively healthy Indian fare in the corporate side of Melbourne CBD. The menu is also very appealing, with authentic spiced curries and drier meats such as the lamb shoulder. It was unfortunate that the woman who served me during my first visit wasn't very generous of the portions, as I could definitely see the discrepancy in her serving compared to her colleagues. It came down that it wasn't too value for money as I expected. The oil from the roast lamb dripped into the brown rice, which was a let down. With that being said, I enjoyed the flavour profile of the meat dish as well as the chickpea curry. I loved the touch of pickled vegetables and yoghurt sauces on top of the bowl too. I'm looking forward to next time, perhaps I'll try the chicken curry.

Come here often for lunch, great place for a quick mixed salad and curry. Would recommend. However today got back to the office opened the lid and had a short blonde hair in my food. Very disappoint and put off. Didn't have the time to take it back :(

Tadka Boom is a fantastic place for a satisfying, delicious feed. There are great veg/non veg choices and you can add or change things as you go. These options help keep their menu fresh and interesting and I love the way I can alter my sides depending on my mood on the day. Lovely, bright place for lunch.
The Swine
An Indian lunch was on the Swine's menu today and what a satisfying feed it was. The Swine is new to Tadka Boom as an eatery and was happy that staff here were only to obliging to assist with explaining how the menu works. The Swine went with the safe option of standard curried meats, and rice for his first time, but was well impressed when watching the wraps being constructed. Looked awesome. Wraps did look Swine Sized (huge!) and delicious. Food here was curry in a hurry flavoursome, spicy good and very much filling. Price was reasonably good as well. The place was busy (which is always a great endorsement) with an inside and outside eating area. Tadka Boom is well recommeded and Swine approved. The Swine will be back!!

Amazing, lip smacking lunch!!! Had to wait in line for 10 minutes but well worth it. Very courteous staff.
The food was not just tasty but very healthy. Decided on a veg portion and not disappointed. Perfect for office goers in the CBD area.
Innafatkid
Cheap and delicious. Been here in my lunch breaks about 3 times now. The food is consistently good and full of flavour. I'm told it is a healthy option but I just come back cause it tastes great, try the veg curry. Would be surprised if this place doesn't blow up into a chain that finds it way into most food courts in Aus.

I came here with a friend for lunch not knowing what to expect. But as soon as I saw the menu I knew that this was going to be a good day. I had the couscous salad with 15hr lamb. It was great but there must've been something in the spice mix because my tongue was tingly for the rest of the day... Which was odd. But the food was nice. Will come again.
Heidi
Great place, this is what goldsborough lane needed! Service is great, the owner is lovely, very welcoming. Loving the lamb roti wrap for lunch and the iced tea!
Melbourne Food Review
A quicky but a real goody! Not really a restaurant, but a takeaway place for a quick lunch, although you can eat in. Also, I need to apologise for the lack of posts over the last three weeks. As some of you dedicated foodies may know, the great site that was Urbanspoon has been sold to another company and renamed Zomato. There are many, many things wrong with the new site which I won’t bore you with, but basically I have not received any traffic from Zomato since the changeover. This has of course messed with my motivation, as Urbanspoon accounted for about 90%. Anyway, about the food...
The Other Jess Tuck
Always a cheery group of staff, solid food for a good price. Great lunch option when hunting through the multiple choices in Goldsborough lane. Roti wraps are delicious and I want that quinoa salad to come back! Today's chicken curry seemed to miss the chicken...hoping that was just a scoop faux pas.

Too spicy to be healthy!
Eat And Be Merry Crew
The dhal which accompanied all the rice bowls was good enough to eat on its own (and is offered as a vegetarian rice bowl option) and the Takda slaw provided a nice balance for the other ingredients. Other than the lamb the other dish I was interested in was the chicken curry (Bombay bird), described as a six-spice fiery chicken curry served with the same dhal and salad. As with the lamb the chicken was very good, tender and tasty although I think fiery was a bit of an overstatement. Spicy is too often used an a synonym for chill hot, and while there was a touch of heat it was well within the occasionally chilli-phobic Snoozes tolerance level, for me just enough to get the tastebuds staring to tingle. Ms No Meat and Snooze both offered samples of their choices, the cous cous salad and the grilled chicken tikka, which I can confirm were tasty and enjoyed by both of them. Couscous salad If you want you can also ‘Make it a meal’ by ordering the masala chips (sweet potato chips) or the Bombay bites (lentil and herb nuggets with a coriander aioli) along with an accompanying drink. Ms No Meat went for the Bombay bites which she liked, although for me they were a little dry even with the accompanying aioli. The thin cu

Great value. Such quick, cheap, convenient take away. I'm so glad this place is near my work - I am counting down to 1:00pm so I can rush over and grab a spicy chicken curry rice bowl (only 58 mins to go)

Positioned in a nice open courtyard like lane along with many other eateries lies Tadka Boom, a Indian kitchen bring healthy fusion curries and other goodies to your plates and palates. Since its opening months ago, Tadka Boom has undergone quite a few changes to its menu and kitchen layout to increase their overall efficiency and reduce service time for customers. This is especially great for those who don’t want to deal with long waits during peak lunch hours (like me). The ordering system at Tadka Boom is similar to the Subway experience. Pick your curry, wraps or salad and customize your order as they make up your lunch in front of you. Once the food is done, it’s passed down to the counter where the food is paid for. You can choose to eat in or take away, which will make a difference to whether they will serve the food on the plate or in a take away box. Dhal Tadka $8.90 Mixed yellow lentils cooked in Tadka seasoning I stuck with something vegetarian and ordered the Dhal tadka, a mild lentil curry on brown rice served with coleslaw salad. The creamy lentil curry was really satisfying and quite filling however I didn’t enjoy the rice as much. The natural texture of Indian rice is too hard for me. I like my rice soft and fluffly. Bombay bites (vegetarian) $4.00 I was recommended to try the Bombay bites, as they were meant to resemble popcorn chicken but chickpea versions instead. The Bombay bites

Went here for lunch and had the rice bowl with dahl and spicy chicken option. Food was tasty, not overly spiced, which one might understand from the fact that this is an alternative (and healthier) take on Indian food. They use brown basmati rice which taste excellent and takes nothing away from the texture you want. The extra salad on top was a good addition, and would probably want some yoghurt rather than the dahl.
Its not exploding with flavour, but it certainly isn't bland.
The meals are very affordable as a lunch option, although the ethnic drink options could probably be better.
Overall, enjoyed the food and definitely going back here.
Aussie Nawaab
An innovative joint which makes the old look new - with a twist. Food quality and servings are good although the quantity of meat in a wrap/bowl is sometimes
Questionable. Very friendly staff/owner. A tad bit pricey because with the same amount of money you get some really good options around the place. Something they might want to reconsider as a part of their startegy. Nice place to catch a quick bite. A must recommend for all.

Clean, fresh and tasty!. This is nothing like the Indian food you get at 99% of the places around town. The slow cooked lamb is unbelievable and the sliders are addictive!

Boom!. I love this place, and it's new take on Indian food. Great city lunch options, and very reasonably priced. The customer service is excellent, and I've been a few times since they opened!

Ordinary experience. Didn't like the presentation of food at all. The wrap was served and handed to us in a paper bag (without a plate) and the coffee in a paper cup with lid. It felt that we had been given take away food and the experience of going there felt very ordinary. When I looked at the menu on the website the food was presented in an enticing way but this was not how it looked. It's okay, maybe they are trying to be cool, but the experience lacked ambiance. It's only a place you visit when you are on the run, but not a place to linger for more than 20 minutes. Friend and I then went to Cafe Vue to have our coffee experience and sweet, served as you'd expect in a cafe. Won't go back to Tadka Boom.

Go Tadka. Beautiful breakfast, I had the porridge and is so different than any others porridge.
Will come back for Lunch... Thank you Tadka..

I work in the area and I'm often looking for lunch options that are tasty but good for me. Tadka boom has worked out a way to combine the taste of Indian food into easy to eat and light lunch options.
You have to try the tacos. I love Mexican and Indian foods, and having the 2 combine together is awesome and works really well.
The staff are very friendly too. A great place to eat.

Tasty wraps. Interesting blend of rice, spices and lamb in a wrap. The pokoras were nice as well.

Love this place!. Stopped here for lunch during work this week and the food is delish! Fast, friendly and good to have something different than the same old CBD lunch time cuisine. Ingredients are fresh and great value for money. Definitely recommend!

I loved it's fresh approach to Indian. Have to say I don't know where some of the comments below were from. Perhaps from the scared competition??
All I know is that my friend and I had a great experience - the lamb wrap was delicious, the roti was clearly an original recipe and fresh, the service was friendly and fast, and there is no way I was hungry afterwards (and yes I am a big eater).
If you are expecting to get some oily saucy thing served over rice from a plastic container then go somewhere else. If you want fresh and tasty try here. You can ask for increased spice you know, if you want to heat things up! I am going back on Monday, with another friend.
Hungryhippo88
Over-priced. Left hungry. No spice. Good service but can't afford to be spending so much on so little.

Indian the way it should be!

For those of you who think Indian food should be hot enough to melt the soles off your shoes, stay away!

Tadka Boom! is the most delicately flavored food you can find. Yes it's a fast food restaurant, but the ingredients are fresh, made by a family team and just downright delicious.

I've had the breakfast, porridge, wraps and sliders - pretty much the entire menu. The blending of ingredients and aromatic spices have won me over and I will continue to come back.
Mia
Lovely lady owner. But food is very bland , not spicy at all , not made with any real love
Meetmenow99
Very Very Very Bland food. Disappointed. If you look at the people's profiles that reviewed on this place.,
Most of them just signed up to write a review just for Tadka Boom.
And given its below average flavours, most of the comments in here are a setup for sure.

Fabulous Indian fusion!. Had breakie this morning. The Bujia Roll was AMAZING. Perfect if you had a hang-over! So yum!
Also tried the Idli Over Easy...very light and tasty. The tomato chutney and gun powder was AWESOME!
Def recommend!

Worst Indian food I had in years.
I really don't know how this place has got so many positive reviews . Definitely looks like paid reviews.

Tiny portions. I spent half an hour trying to dig out the flavor if at all there is any.
Very bland taste.
No way I'm coming back to this place unless I loose my taste buds.
Alex.gray83
Bland, expensive and obviously overhyped.. Heard about this place from a colleague at work and decided to look it up on UrbanSpoon. Sure enough, nothing but stellar reviews and a high score convinced us to check it out.

Went in a large group, with most of us getting the Tik-Tikka Boom. The service was friendly and pretty fast. The food, however, was mediocre at best. If you know and love Indian food for its' complex flavours and spices, don't bother coming to this place. The chicken had almost no flavour and tasted as if they had bought off-the-shelf sauce in a bottle and then sparingly sprinkled it on top. I now question the validity of the remaining review for this place on here.

Left disappointed and hungry, the consensus among the group being that the food was extremely lacking. None of us plan to return. If you must try it, do so on your own first - that way your buddies won't hate you when you ruin their Friday lunch outing!
Anon
Expensive and lacking flavour. Expensive food, tiny portions - obviously this wouldn't have been so bad if the food tasted great. Which it didn't.
Drinks were flat, the roti paratha was most likely the stuff you could get from the asian grocery (it was one of those instant roti which was oily and again, tiny in size).

Had the tik-tikka boom! which actually looked quite appetising in the pictures - however, the real thing was really dry and sadly, totally tasteless. Was very disappointed. Left the place feeling hungry too.

I don't normally write review's however, I dropped in this morning for a different take on breaky and loved it!! Indian style coffee was smooth and breaky was quick, easy and delicious. Great start to the day!!

TADKABOOM! Absolutely loved it. Fresh, light and very tasty. Such a different take on Indian food and was so quick and easy.

BOOM! Outta this world in flavor!!!. OMFG! this place totally rocked my world! I am actually a fussy eater and usually want meat in every dish I eat when I go out - But this place totally changed my mind on that!
I have had the Brekkie Wrap twice now and it's my go to thang on the menu.
It never fails me! I could JUST eat the wrap on it's own and I would be happy! It's like Roti bread but better!
For lunch have the Lamb - Its outta control and bursting with yummy-ness!

Just go here guys! Like just go and experience it - You won't regret it :D

Delicious and quick!. Popped into the new Tadka Boom today at lunch and tried the chicken sliders, they were delicious, fresh and perfect for a light lunch. Love love loved the chai tea, a perfect blend of spices to warm me up! Will be back to try the rest of the menu!

Delicious!. I don't eat a lot of Indian cuisine, but absolutely loved the Kid Kaboom! I have been dreaming about the lamb since I left - can't wait to get back there and try the rest of the menu : )

Indian with a twist.. I went there expecting much of the same as your traditional Spice Kitchen. Wow! Was I wrong. This is gourmet Indian cuisine. Refreshing, light, fresh, tasty as and was one of the best salads I've ever had. Add to that speedy service, happy staff & a clean presentation, it's definitely worth a visit...or several!
Christine Dang
Amazing breakfast menu! Staff are really friendly. Food comes out fast and the chai is as authentic as it gets. Can't wait to come back to try the rest of the menu.

This place is awesome!! Very flavoursome meals packed with an infused Indian taste that you can control your own desired quantity. Along with the Great service, I would recommend this place to anyone!! We'll be back for lunch
Ivy
Original and flavoursome. A great addition to Goldborough lane, definitely adding this to my lunching repertoire. Love the originality of the concept and new fusion of flavours. Highly recommend the lamb wrap!!

My first time during lunch at work, had take away. Cute little sliders and lentil fritters. Nicely spiced and fresh produce. Staff were lovely, friendly, helpful and very welcoming! The only thing I found that although my fritters & burger were spiced they lacked in salt. However this will not stop me from going back as I would love to try more items from the menu : ) well done xx

A great take on Indian food. Indian flavours, subtly blended. Try this place, the flavours are authentic and it's Indian food that won't give you heartburn! The wraps, made with real rotis are generous and yummy. I really enjoyed the slow cooked lamb wrap and the roti tasted like what I'd make at home without the awful taste of preservatives that you get in most wraps. I went back for their dessert - the ice creams are to die for!! Well done, whoever dreamt up the flavours!

#BOOM. So Delicious!!! I'm a lover of Indian food and what these guys are doing is fantastic. Authentic Indian yumminess with a twist.

The breakfast is awesome. I recommend the Bada Brekkie. It's a generous delicious brekkie for under $10.

If you want something a little different that makes you feel like you've given you belly a hug... Try this place.

Yum!!!!

Awesome place to have breakie and lunch! The idli is great and the porridge is simply awesome. I love southern Indian food and now I can eat it in Melbourne #boom

WONDERFUL INDIAN FUSION FOOD! BRILLIANT!. This is what I’m talking about! IT’S ABOUT TIME TADKA BOOM! Great Indian fusion food located in Goldsbrough Lane in Melbourne CBD. Indian fusion food is now starting to peak with Melbournians interest and our palates; therefore Tadka Boom offers one of the best food and drink selections on the menu for both breakfast & lunch. This exciting, new & unique concept has certainly made a massive impression on me that I find myself coming back for more and more and more! I’d certainly recommend everyone to check this place out! Great customer service and staff!

Brilliant. Awesome food and wonderful friendly staff... Make this a local as its definitely worth it.

The best and tastiest Indian Out there. If you haven't been to this new food outlet in Goldsbrough Lane then I implore you to seek it out. Their modern, healthy take on traditional indian street food will make you reconsider what Indian food should be like. No more oily, greasy concoctions that leave you feeling sluggish and bloated. This food is light, tasty and will leave you wanting more. Their roti wraps are delicious, and if you're feeling adventurous then they're also open for breakfast to tantalise your taste buds early in the morning!
Mcarr463
Quality food, good vibe, friendly staff. A well priced modern take on popular Indian street dishes in a trendy, up beat setting....what's not to love!? I had the flagship lamb "Kid Kaboom" and enjoyed every bite! Think GYG but Indian food! Highly recommend!
Simontdo
Extremely tasty food. I had the Dhalia salad with prawns and Bombay Bites. It was ridiculously tasty and I cannot wait to come back and try the rest of the menu. Great to see a unique offering in this side of town as you won't get Indian food like this anywhere else. Amazing!!!
Matthew Carlo Donazzan
An awesome healthy breakfast or lunch option. I have eaten Tadka Boom! twice now (only opened last week!). Had the Idli Over Easy breakfast (two eggs, spinach and indian rice dumplings)and the Tik-Tikka Boom! (grilled chicken wrap with chickpea and coriander).

Both were fresh clean meals full of flavour. Good to see more healthy and interesting options coming to the city.
A Chronicle Of Gastronomy
Light, fresh and healthy might not be adjectives people typically string together in the same sentence as Indian cuisine. Mother and son team, Lalitha and Ashwin Rajan, aim to bring contemporary Indian food to the Melbourne food scene. The bright white, yellow and turquoise colour scheme helps reinforce this theme and makes it a comfortable place to spend breakfast or lunch.

Dishes are fresher and cleaner than your usual Indian cuisine without all the heavy oils and creams.

Menu: I heard about Tadka Boom! – a new restaurant that with a catchy name and delivers a modern take on traditional Indian street food – and couldn’t wait to try it out. Tadka Boom! is located in Goldsbrough Lane in the heart of the Melbourne CBD (near the corner of Bourke and William streets). Tadka means seasoning in Hindi which relates to the diverse flavours and taste they bring to each dish. The new restaurant was opened by Lalitha Rajan together with her son Ashwin. Rajan quit her high flying executive job at HP to found Tadka Boom! She uses her well-loved family recipes from her very own kitchen (and inspired from her hometown of Delhi) here to Tadka Boom! to share with the people of Melbourne. The venue is quite big in size – seats 45 inside and 12 outside – and centres around the colours of yellow and aqua mixed in with white, grey and black. The colours really work well together and brighten up the space adding to its fun and lively atmosphere. There are a selection of tab
Brunch Addict
Tadka Boom! offers a really different brunch experience to the average westerners, and an interesting twist on traditional food for those who are used to it. The food is fast, delicious and sustaining, and if no other reason than to relish Grandma’s Jau Porridge a go, make sure you give Tadka Boom! a go.”

Tucked in a corporate block on Goldborough Lane near Bourke and William St makes Tadka Boom an easy lunch spot for corporate’s or anyone lurking the city. I was lucky enough to be invited to their launch party to taste the amazing food as follows.

An Indian Fusion Kitchen redefining perceptions of Indian cuisine with our modern take on traditional Indian street food favourites.
Gastrology
The menu is mouth-wateringly good and features all the flavours you know and love about Indian cuisine but without the unhealthy bits. Inspired by Mama Rajan’s home-style cooking, the food was healthy, light and fresh and features high quality ingredients to create subtle flavours.

Tadka Boom! takes Indian food and gives it a fresh twist on it's head, keeping the flavour but making the food a bit lighter and brighter…in fact, one might say it's quite a bit healthier too!
