Review Nizams Indian Restaurant - Melbourne

Mandy P
Yummmm Biryani. Had never tried this style of Biryani before, or haleem. Sooo good. We got the special Biryani - mutton (only “special” bit is that you pay a little extra for an egg on top and 3-4 pieces of chicken 65). The naans are different from the regular naan - more like a thick roti. Love that it’s open till really late. Prices are value for money (hope they stay that way) I’m sure I’ll be popping by here A LOT in the future. Good that there’s lots of parking right in-front of it.

Top spot for a midnight biriyani craving. Succulent chicken and authentic Hyderabadi taste. However, Chicken Dum Biriyani misses the extra masala blend with the rice. Ambience and rush made me feel like home.

Excellent taste and service. Had Haleem, Biryani, Apollo fish and chicken fried rice. All items were very taste. Highly recommended !!!!!

This place is for biryani, haleem and tandoor items. The place is small, and there will be a bit of delay, but it is worth waiting for biryani. For who are looking for prompt service, better order takeout. The place is open till 2:00PM, one stop for all midnight biryani cravings. Been here so many times and the taste is consistent all the time. One of the best places in Melbourne to have haleem and biryani. Chicken dum and mutton dum biryanis are highlights.

There are not too many choices in Melbourne when it comes to Indian restaurants. nizams is one of the bests among a few. With a great variety of Indian dishes what makes it special is the traditional decorations which makes the ambient so attractive you never want to leave (see photos). So if you are Indian and want to impress you Aussie friends/boy-girl friend, go for it and invite them over for a supper. If not, Nizams is a great place to taste the best biryani you will never forget.

Food quality and quantity was not good as per price, plates were dirty and broken, we ordered paneer 65 and it came out the worse paneer i ever had, overall not recommended

Amazing biryani. Every time I'm in Melbourne I make sure to visit. Moist, flavourful and good portion size I wish they had a Sydney location. Probably the only thing comparable to actual Mother India in the southern hemisphere. Small premises though so you'll have to get it takeaway but they're open late so it's all right. Good place to go with the crew for hearty desi food

I have eating at Nizam before and it was great food. Last night with a friend we had a meal there and both of us were very disappointed with the quality of customer service and food. The Naan we had was more a Turkish like or pita bread , my friend food was over salted and left everything, the lamb curry I had was not that great. When paying we informed the staff of the bad quality of the food. That's it am done with Nizam and I will let my friends know about it.

Great curry! Rice and naan bread were superb! But serving is smaller than what we have expected

A perfect place for authentic Hyderabadi Biryani 😍
The best part about this place is that it's open until 2 AM on all the days.
Has been my favorite go-to-place for months now!
They get really busy on weekends, and especially on days when there are any public events or matches happening in and around the city.

I ordered Achari Chicken Tikka and mutton Rogan josh thinking the delicacy would be truly justified. Both the gravies were raw tomatoes paste. Food taste was pathetic I have eaten in long time.

Advise to management, please change your chef who knows how to prepare rogan josh or remove it from the menu.

Wasted my hard earned money.

One of the places that offers haleem in Melbourne is the Nizams Indian Restaurant in North Melbourne. It is a simple diner with decent ambiance - nothing too extravagant. However, the slow cooked stew made of meat, lentils, wheat and spices garnished with cashews, coriander, fried onions and lemon tasted heavenly and compensated for the not so stunning interiors!

Read complete review at:

I’ve been here twice only for biryani so, BIG YES for that. Finest Hyderabadi biryani so far. Try chicken 65 from the starters.
Staff was friendly.
PS: You get Thums Up drink which is hard to find here. 😜☺️

The menu covered vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. There were a lot of choices. The quality of food was excellent. The price was affordable

I wish I read the reviews before ordering! This Indian is the worst I have ever had. It was so oily that it was uneatable. One of my dishes was the vegetable korma, which I was expecting big pieces of vegetables, however they are just tiny frozen vegetables with a 1/4 of one potato.... also my curry was like a soup because of all the oil. there are so many other places in the same price range, don't waste your money.

Off the bat, I'd like to say the guys working at the restaurant are extremely friendly.
But the food was quite disappointing to say the least.
We ordered a Chicken Kadhai, Butter Chicken and garlic Naans.
Chicken Kadhai and Butter Chicken were extremely oily. When we took it out of the bag there was oil everywhere.
Butter chicken was bland and all you could really taste was the oil.
The garlic naans were no better. Unfortunately, I would not call them naans either. Flat, wet pitta bread covered in grease.

Best Indian Restaurant, Haleem, Biryani And More, are too good to miss. Will highly recommend if you are craving for hyderabadi food and more. Great service and open late with option to deliver...

After a long search for late night open indian restaurants , we found Nizams . Tried this restaurant for the first time and was very happy with the food & service.
We ordered Achari chicken & kadhai chicken and we just loved the flavours .
Also mint & coriander naan was delicious.
Overall a great experience 👍🏻

I ordered butter chicken and butter naans. Quite satisfying recipe of butter chicken. Naans were good too. They even provided onions as requested which not many restaurants do. It was a fulfilling meal. So I would recommend this place to quench Indian food cravings.

Best Indian restaurant in city. I have tried this restaurant many times, still it has something new to offer. Variety of indian made dishes with good taste and quality. Go and try !

I wish I could give this stupid restaurant zero stars for the kind of bread they served us last night. In the name of naan we were given sliced tandoori roti wrapped in paper bags! Plus we were not given part of our desert which was suppose to be two plates of gulab jamun but what we got was one plate! I have never been at such a shitty Indian restaurant from all the ones in Melbourne. A restaurant that cannot even serve simple naan after taking about 40 minutes for take away. If I had a choice I would have chosen a different place for take away, bad timing! But I do not recommend this place at all. What a ripper.

Disaster food...... totally disappointing right from starters to mains. Heard a lot about nizam biryani but when I had biryani here my first spoon was my last.

I was looking for paye in Melbourne, and finally got a place.... It was really awesome taste.... The quantity was also very good that really fill up my tummy...

Haleem was not exceptional but good, appreciate this guys for cooking the traditional dish. Service was quick on that specific day when we've been there.
Overall experience - Fine

Well this is the only restaurant that's open until 2am around North Melbourne ! I was a bit disappointed with last night's dinner service ! We had the chicken and lamb Biriyani and to our delight they were undercooked ! Lamb was not fresh and the chicken wasn't tender ! I guess they have been saving it in the freezer for too long ! Spoke to the manager as well but they weren't even courteous to apologise ! Utter disappointment ! Regarding the food, they were mundane and ain't that appealing !
Jim Bob
Fantastic butter chicken and open very late. The naan is not exceptional and the rice is ok but the curry is the star. Well worth a quick late night test run!

WE HAVE CELEBRATED A BIRTHDAY PARTY THERE LAST YEAR THE FOOD WAS GOOD SERVICE WAS EVEN BETTER BUT EVENTUALLY THE CHANGE IN THE SERVICE BY A NEW GUY WHO IS OVER CHARGING THE CUSTOMER HE OVER CHARGED ME BY $10 AND WHEN ASKED ABOUT IT HE GAVE ME THE MONEY BACK BUT MADE ME WAIT FOR MY FOOD FOR MORE THAN HALF AN HOUR AND WAS SERVING EVERY OTHERS EXCEPT ME THIS ONE WHO ALWAYS CARRY BLUETOOTH AROUND HIS EAR IS GOING TO BE A BIG SET BACK FOR THE RESTAURANT AS THEY CLEARLY LOST MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS BUSINESS EVERYBODY CHECK YOUR BILLS YOU MAY BE OVER CHARGED .......ONLY REASON I GAVE 2.5 IS FOOD IS STILL GOOD BUT FOR THAT I DON'T WANT TO SHELL OUT MORE MONEY FOR WHICH I HAVENT ORDERED.

Below expectation. Gave this place a try given the high urbanspoon rating but was disappointed. The lamb curry was mainly sauce, only 6 small diced up bits of lamb. We ordered 3 naan and only 2 arrived, thin and small as.

Small investment, small mistake. Oh, I really wanted to like this. Such prompt delivery! Such agreeable prices.

It is a bit woeful though, isn't it? At least I didn't spend a lot on the meal...
Morganthomas89
Rubbish Indian. Watery crappy chicken. No flavour what so ever, could have bought s butter chicken from Woolworths and it be better than this. 1/10 and the one is for turning up

Bland watery curry, thin cold naan - disregard other "reviewers" claiming this is the best Indian in Melbourne!. I felt so strongly about the poor food and all the amusingly fake reviews I actually created a urbanspoon account just to write this as my first review.
I ordered takeaway 7pm on a Saturday. There was no one in the restaurant when I went to pick up, which is always a bad sign. I ordered simple food - butter chicken and garlic naan. The curry was very watery - I could taste tomato but not much spice or cashew. The "garlic naan" weren't very garlicky and were quite thin and cold. The only positive was that the chicken was tender, but that is not hard to do if you cook something for a long time.
I would not come back here. It's well worth the effort to trek into town to Red Pepper on Bourke Street instead.

Serves cold food. Ordered biryani and it came out of the fridge heated in microwave, 1 day old biryani served, just not acceptable

Meat and service not good. I picked up some takeaway from Nizams and only realised, once home, that they missed some of my order. When I rang them to tell them of their error, they assured me that they would deliver the remaining goods... I am still waiting...

The food that I DID receive was average at best - very dry and tough meat, and one dish seemed to consist of the chewy scrapings from the bottom of an overheated pot...or skin...or something. The flavours were ok though.

1.5 out of 5

Great Food. These guys are awesome...!!

Best Hyderabadi restaurant in Melbourne. Being an Hyderabadi I loved the food here. The Biryani was amazing.....loved it

My Favourite Indian. Food and service is always amazing. Really good prices. Our Sunday regular.

Wonderful Lamb Biryani yummy !!!!. I live south east suburbs, My Friend from office brought take away of lamb biryani for me from this restaurant. Me and my husband really enjoyed it so good. If i get chance to visit North melbourne, I Will definitely dine there to taste some more items.
I am sure they also will taste fantastic.

Pretty good. Have had takeaway from here a few times. Good variety of curries, lots to choose from. Nice flavours. Especially enjoy the Malai Kofta. Dahl wasn't so good though.
Andrea Withers
Watery, bland curries. Small serving sizes. It might be cheap but I'd rather pay more for something I can finish eating. Crushed garlic from a jar on the naan bread and cheap cuts of chicken in the butter chicken made for a disappointing dinner.
Will not return.
Birdman99
Bland, very watery curries, small serving sizes, long wait times considering we were the only ones in the restaurant on a Wednesday night. Wouldn't go back
Kingy
Waited 30mins for takeaway on a quiet Saturday night, and still waiting! Not impressed.

Very tasty food. We tried malai kofta and methi chicken. Both curries were very tasty. Price is also low.

I'll definitely come again here. Nice food .

Average. My takeaway order was small for the price I paid, rice was lovely, naan average overall, the food was nowhere near the 92% rating, edible but average, makes me wonder whose writing these amazing reviews, I ordered food at 7 pm on weekend no one in the restaurant....?
Lulubel
Ordinary Indian. Had take away from here recently as it's relatively new and close to home.
Chicken Tikka Marsala was bland, Gobi 65 was ok but cold, the Sabzi Korma was also lacking in flavour. Naan was nice.

There are a few Indian options in the area and we won't being heading back here in any hurry.

“Great variety of delicious dishes and cozy ambience. Recently we organized a get together of family and friends at Nizam's India rest. The food was superb, with a wide variety of absolutely delicious dishes. There were several starters, a great mix of veg and non-veg north & south Indian cuisine, biryanis and sweet dishes.

Overall, the experience was superb and made the event memorable and enjoyable for every one!

I cannot believe this place! I was recommended by my manager to try this place out and I figured an Indian would know of a good Indian restaurant. I read the reviews with one review saying the place was terrible and the rest saying it was amazing. I must say now, the person who said this place was terrible could not have been more wrong. This place is absolutely amazing! It may look like a plain resturant on the outside but this place does not disappoint. I had the lamb biryani and it was so good I ordered takeaway vindaloo for lunch tomorrow. I couldn't help myself though and had to also try the vindaloo and honestly, I have never had Indian this good before. The place is amazing. I've tried almost every Indian resturant in the south east suburbs and thought I found a good one originally but this place has given me the best Indian I have EVER had. I'm going to go back next week and probably make it a weekly thing. There is nothing bad about this place, it ticks every box and I implore everyone to try it.
Lida
Probably the worst Indian meal I've ever had. The chicken methi was totally tasteless, the lamb madras was mildly hot, both dishes had very little meat in them and the garlic nan was as flat. As a roti! We asked how weiked our meal and when we to them they ignored us

An unexpected gem!. With few Indian options in North Melbourne we were keen to try this new eatery. The restaurant, heralded by an intriguing circular hanging sign, had a modern and clean interior, with wooden tables and pop music playing in the background like many cheap takeaway/eat-in establishments. This was not, however, your typical Indian takeaway restaurant. Simply put, the food IS AMAZING. All the dishes we ordered were fantastic, but particularly the lamb kofta that seemed to melt in the mouth and the crispy paneer naan. The menu is comprehensive and it was evident that a lot of thought had gone into the preparation of each dish, making this some of the best (if not the best) Indian food I have ever had. We will definitely be back.

Great Culinary Experience. My wife and I recently tried this new restaurant. As a keen curry eater I have been looking for a new "local" after recently moving to West Melbourne. We both remarked that the meal was simply the best curry we could remeber and I telephoned the restaurant to compliment the chef. Enjoy!

My Favourite restaurant. I was in search of some good indian restaurant and it ended up at this place. It is good at everything , mainly the food taste that reminds me of my favourite dhaba in india. Good service, enough car parking, close to CBD, perfect for a beautiful evening dine.
The crispy tandoori naan with spicy kadhai chicken/chilli paneer is mouth watering. thats my favourite...

Boneless chicken cooked in rich creamy cashew & poppy seeds gravy flavoured with spices and garnished with herbs. A speciality of Hyderabadi cuisine.
