Review Pho No.1 - Melbourne

Mandy Khaa
Went for a family dinner, it was a nice and clean restaurant! We ordered 3 large bowls of pho that was easily shared between 4 people! The service was fast and friendly & the food portions were huge for the price which is awesome! I would definitely recommend dining here, no left overs could be found as the food was delicious đŸ€€.

it is a new place and we stopped by near where we parked. It is huge bowl with look like less soup, less meat, less veggies. Taste was alright and staff and owner were lovely and responsive whenever we need something. Maybe I would say it is a fancy Vietnamese noodle shop. I would rather go to small busy shop

Ordered a large rare beef phĂł. Lovely beef soup base with fresh bean shoots, Asian basil and lemon. Friendly service and very clean. Family casual style restaurant.

One of the very few restaurants in Springvale that provide vegetarian pho! Really friendly service and the food servings are huge. Even if you are getting the takeaway, staff are very hospitable and will offer hot tea while you wait for your order to be made if it will take more than a few minutes. Setting is very modern and clean. Edit: I've gone back a few more times to try out their other veggie options as per owner's recommendation and they are all amazing. One thing the restaurant also has is different types of pulses for the noodles which is definitely unique. Love the modern twist they put on food (sorry for the takeaway images). Never have had an issue with the service either. I believe there is a card surcharge/percent but it's not like they're charging you a dollar like some places when you're just buying a meal for yourself. One thing I wish they would have, is that their new menu is online!

Finally found my new regular pho spot. Friendly service and yes, they do take card payment which really is hard to find. Great portion size with lots of meat. The soup was spot on and the fried chilli (oil) had a lot of flavour. Looking forward to my future visits with out a queue :)

Good menu, all the vietnamese classics, we tried the bo kho(beef stew) with noodles and the banh cuon (ground pork) in rice batter. The broth for the bo kho was very flavoursome with good chunks of beef, the banh cuon was also very tasty and ideal for someone wanting a light meal. Restraunt was clean and service was fast.

Pho was quick to arrive and all the dishes had generous serving sizes. The grilled pork in the vermicelli noodle dish was pretty good but the spring rolls could have been better. Prices were reasonable. Good selection of dishes and drinks.

I love the pho broth. Very nice. Visited yesterday and Place looked packed and under staffed, but the foods still come out quick and hot.

I have been going to Pho No 1 for more than 4 years now. This place is my hidden gem as the broth is always flavourful and aromatic and has never let me down.

I'm not even kidding, every single time I have dined at theirs the rare beef pho is always the same flavour and great quality. I also love how they have complimentary onions for share.

Additionally, if you are the type of person who doesn't like busy restaurants or lining up, I highly recommend this place. It is very comfortable and not overly noisy like some places (Hoa Tran for example) in Springvale.

The prices are reasonable and the quantities are large. Thanks for the great service guys!

There's a pho shop around every corner in Springvale. My usual haunt was closed due to the lockdown so I had to go beyond my comfort zone to try the beef pho from Pho No. 1. With a name like that, how could I go wrong?

The pho was packed for takeaway nicely. The noodles were perfectly cooked but the broth was slightly under seasoned. They gave me a nice amount of fresh bean sprouts and sauces.

While it doesn't replace my all time fave pho shop, Pho No. 1 sure is a good alternative!
Cookielessvee
Many seats and friendly staff.

The Vegan pho with mushroom soup base and tofu was okay.

The medium pho was served in a big bowl which would have been enough to fill two people. The soup is very flavoursome and meaty and served with a lot of noodles but unfortunately the meat itself was terrible. The beed was sliced so thin that it just melted in your mouth in a bad way and was full of ligaments. The beef brisket was tough.

Definite improvements needed:
- Ordered pho with onion but no coriander. Came out with no onion OR coriander.
- The tray of bean shoots and basil didn't arrive, and when I asked for it, the waitress brought out sauce plates. This should really come out as soon as someone orders pho.
- the pho soup itself was a little salty. The flavour of the charred onion was pronounced.
- the basil - bottom half of the sprig wasn't washed. There was dirt on the leaves (pic).
- 20 mins after the pho arrived, the banh cuon still hadn't come.
- I saw the banh cuon on the kitchen bench ready to be served, but the waitress and waiter were doing other things for the next 5 mins.
- didn't bother to wait for the banh cuon, went to pay for the pho.
- the manager berated the staff in front of us.

Pick up your game. You can't open a new Vietnamese restaurant in Springvale serving the same dishes as every other Vietnamese joint and fall behind on any aspect.

My partner and I have been going to the same place for a few years now and I’ve never had a problem with them before. That is until these last couple of visits this year where the staff haven’t been so welcoming and rude.

The last time I had gone, I overlooked the fact that they had forgotten our drinks and wanted to give it another chance. So my partner and I then tried again today and we enjoyed our meals very much. That is until we got up to pay for our meal and the man serving us began speaking in Vietnamese. He called us fat and was shocked at the fact that we had ordered two steaks and a small bowl of soup to share. He looked me up and down and stared in disbelief asking the girls how could just two of us eat so much and began calling us fat. He didn’t know I understood every word he said about us and it made our very delicious meal taste horrible. I spoke up and told him that it’s not nice to speak that way about paying customers. He didn’t care, don’t think I’d go back knowing that the staff would think and see us in such a way.

Pho No.1 is one of our go-to pho places. However, skip the pho and get the BBH! The BBH is awesome - spicy, flavourful, and a very generous portion size. Noodles are thick and chewy, and silky smooth. The dry vermicelli noodles with spring rolls are also pretty nice, and so is the broken rice if you’re not feeling noodles.

3.5
Pho here is generally good, a little lighter than others in springvale. Food comes out fast. Usually quieter here but can get busy in peak lunch hour. Good pho - pho sho

Very nice Pho, have many choices of pho to pick, the soup is nice and tasty, but my favourite one is Bo Kho ( Beef Stew ) , the size of dishes/bowls here are big, good value, the restaurant always look clean and friends are very friendly, very fast service, you dont have to wait for long to be served! If you go Springvale, try this đŸ‘đŸ»

Improved menu, very clean restaurant, rice noodle for pho is really really smooth and good. Soup base is kind of a bit towards clear soup and not over powering flavour. The spicy beef noodle however is not spicy enough but it is still good for me.

Came in looking for something to warm my stomach and found this perfect dish not your average BBH, 3 color BBH to be exact !! Chickpea and green pea noodles accompanied by the normal white ones very nice and chewy and the soup was fabulous definitely coming back !!!

Keep coming back to Pho No.1. Absolutely delicious and price range is FABULOUS. I always have beef combination add extra beef ball. Love it lol
@foodtom
We normally visit here for our monthly Pho, they give you generous serving sizes and it's definitely good quality. Often you can tell that they care more about quantity rather than quality although because you often get fatty/tasteless meat, Overall I'd still come back haha.

pho is ok. not the best. but passable. place is cleaner then most in the area. and serving sizes are decent. soup is ok.
service not great. could be better and more welcoming. would return as not completely disappointed with my experience here.
but needs improvement.
Ruski09
Nice friendly service! Though their pho is not the best in Springvale, I would definitely come back here again. Really enjoy the atmosphere here!
Julieeeteee
Compared to its competitors it’s alright, it’s pretty decent for its price. The pho for me was served warm and not hot the way I like it, but was still enjoyable. It was a 10 minutes wait until food came out.

The fresh rice noodles rolls are a must try! They even come in different colours - naturally coloured with vegetables. We got the avocado and pumpkin rolls, freshly made and accompanied by a tasty dipping sauce (vegan friendly). Also couldn’t go past the thin rice noodle rolls filled with three types of mushrooms - a creative vegan twist on a Vietnamese classic! The avocado rice paper rolls were also freshly made with generous fillings inside. We were really impressed by how quickly we got our meals and all the staff were helpful and friendly. The seating here is spacious, clean and modern - one of the very few gems that ticks all the boxes in Springvale. Can’t wait to come back for more of these rice noodle rolls!!
Food - creative
Service - efficient
Ambience - spacious
Veg friendliness - come here for the rice noodle rolls!

Food comes fast and the Pho soup is very hot and fresh every time. To clarify for everyone, there is actually NO MSG at all, the soup is beautifully made with actual bones and delicate ingredients (personally been to the back and know the cook). The service is decent but due to the fact that it is quite new, the waiters are a bit slow.
Conclusion: Great Pho, best I've had so far and plenty of ingredients, very filling.
TL;DR
Food: 9/10
Service: 7/10
Money's worth: 9/10

This place is one of my regular haunts.

We go probably weekly. It's a problem. My 5 year old daughter just loves it.

We generally order rare beef, chicken or meatballs pho, sizzling steak, bun bo hue and spring rolls. You can add more meat for a few dollars if you want. A baby bowl per child is free. The steak can be cooked to your liking but tends to be overcooked. They are pretty flexible so you can chop and change your meal if required.

Service is always friendly and fast. Cash only.

Only negative is that they don't have high chairs, just booster seats.

DO: The pho bo, Pho ga or Pho dac biet.

DON’T: Park on the street, go to the multi deck instead.

TIP: Order an extra serving of noodles and meat on the side.

Pho Thu The or is it Pho No.1? They still have the same menu and their bowls are still labelled Pho Thu The. Anyway, I felt like oxtail pho and I knew this place had it. Here's the breakdown:
* Broth - flavoursome and beefy, is less salty than most establishments meaning you can drink the entire bowl without feeling too thirsty! Pretty decent, you can see part of their kitchen through the glass where they have huge pots bubbling away.
* Noodles - top notch, silky and slurp worthy.
* Meat - oxtail had a lot of beefy fatty flavour and texture, absolute delight to someone like me who doesn't shy away from animal fat and off cuts. Wish there was more though!
*Condiments - your usual array of complimentary pho condiments, they have a little bowl of pickled onions on the table which is a nice touch. Not my favourite as they are sliced too large but still a nice addition. Also on the table you can help yourself to chopped chillies as well as some amazing chilli oil which went well with my oxtail.
Value for money - $11 for my medium serve which left me satisfied, a standard in Springvale. Other places around the corner (without naming) are however very generous with their bowls of pho.
The large pho here is priced at 11.00 and it's bigger than your head. The staff definitely have their personalities ranging from complacent to eager. One encounter involved disbelief at ordering the large pho and approval when I finished it. It's a satisfying place although I would argue the pho is not of the best quality you could find in Springvale (the soup isn't balanced and heavy on the meaty taste). Excellent pricing though (Y)
Update: now one of my top 2 spots in Springvale. New recommendations include the rainbow bahn cuốn and the shaking beef.
Pho Sure
Great improvement from previous pho chu the franchise. Noodles are fresh, meats are ok, soup flavour is ok as previously there was no flavour. Will go again.
Jamesweir1980
Rare beef pho and shredded chicken pho was pho-nomenal :)... I got the large size... Biggest bowl of pho I've ever seen!! probably the best prawn spring rolls I've ever had. Friendly, very quick service. And amazing value for money. Definitely be back!
Emmanuel Foundoulakis
This has to be one of the best pho places i have ever been to, the broth isnt overpowering and the service here is great!

You dont feel rushed nor do you have to share a table with a random when this store is busy unlike other pho restaurants. You also get an extra bonus when you order extra meat, they serve it in a seperate bowl full of broth.

I highly recommend this place whenever you have a craving for pho, you wont be disappointed and make sure to add some pickled onions into your bowl!
Jen
This is my go to pho place in Springvale as Pho Hung Vuong is often to packed and cramped for my liking.

The staff are friendly here and the seating is spacious and I can take my time eating without feeling guilty about the hoards of people outside waiting to be fed.

The soup base here is one of my favourites; the MSG is almost undetectable. My only complaint is that the beef is sometimes sliced way to thick making it chewy.

There has been a change in the head chef here a couple of times and the taste of the soup changes slightly every time.
Larry Ma
Had a few times here and always too much MSG. NOT REALLY MY LIKINGS.

last time i was sick for three weeks after having a meal here and never come back to here.
Wes K
The pho is not bad, maybe not the best I had. They have a large range of different type of pho. When we talking about pho, generally we talk about the taste of the soup. The soup ingredient is the secret of each restaurants they kept to themselves. Be careful with those have too much taste as they are most likely to have a lot of MSG. This restaurant although I can't say for sure that there is no MSG, but at least the taste isn't strong which mean either no MSG or very little MSG. I would give this pho rate one of the TOP of my list.

One thing that kept me for keep coming back is definitely friendly staffs, family friendly and spaciousness. So if you have youngsters in the family and want to fulfil your taste bug for an authentic pho, I would recommend this restaurant.

Note, the kids get free chicken pho, that's a plus.

We have tried Pho Chu The in Victoria street and it was terrible, but we found Pho Chu The in Springvale as well so gave it another try!
The broth was crystal clear and hot enough, beef was soft, good amount!
The price is so cheap, $10 for medium size, I'll add extra beef next time coz it costs only few dollars anyway :)
We're very happy that we found this place, definitely we'll be back!!

I tried this place out due to its high rating and was not disappointed. They only serve pho and spring rolls, exactly what I look for in a pho joint.

They have three sizes for pho to suit the not so hungry or the extremely hungry. I settled for a medium size while my partner a large. The medium is the normal size you get in other places. The serving is sufficient for a regular eater. Taste wise really good without being loaded with msg. The beef slices came a little overcook for me as I was perhaps looking for slightly rare pieces.

The serve of spring rolls is in 6 and the fillings much have better than most outside. I can taste meat, and the lettuce was sufficient.

Service is reasonably good for a regularly priced pho joint.

All in all, a relatively good pho place that lives up to its rating! Recommended if you are looking for pho in Richmond where choices are plenty!

I'm not sure what I'm missing here but I just can't jump on the band wagon with this place even after a few tries.
I find the broth really nothing special, I'm always having to put so many condiments into the bowl to be satisfied in order to start eating. IMO, there are several better pho places in Springvale, even directly across the road (I was secretly longing to be in there while I was trying to get through the bowl infront of me...probably not a good sign).

SERVICE - 3.5/5
Attentive, always on hand for anything you need. Stay as long as you like and never being rushed. Thumbs up on this front.

FOOD - 3/5
Improvement with more flavour and more of the noodles & meat. More broth than anything else.
Positive: wasn't oily.

DECOR & AMBIENCE - 3/5
Nice shiny table and chairs which is a good break from the tired old sticky tables and squished up chairs in some other pho places. Not an overly loud place which is good. Wall mounted TV overlooking dining area with the news on. Handy, get fed and catch up on news & weather!

KID FRIENDLY: Yes
Kat_Eats_Mel
This place has the best pho. I do not go to any other pho restaurants in the area, only to this restaurant. I've been to majority of the other pho joints in the area due to growing up there but this place is by far the best and authentic pho I've had. Every single time.

I had the feeling of being watched. Every time I looked up from my bowl to converse with my dining companion, or gaze around the sparsely outfitted eatery, I just caught six pairs of eyes darting off, to some random item of furniture or fellow patron. There was no hostility... Just a kind of interest or curiosity.
I was far from home, a long way from my inner suburban comfort zone, a lonely explorer in deepest darkest Springvale.
It could have been my big flaming red beard.... Or maybe my extensive Samoan tattoos.... But I was definitely standing out from the local lunch crowd at this innocuous shop front Vietnamese eatery. But man oh man, it was worth the trip off my beaten track....
There's something about pho. Every now and then, usually around lunch time on my day off work, I'm seized with an irresistible compulsion to get me some delicious Vietnamese soupy goodness. The fresh aromatic Asian basil, the satisfying crunch of fresh bean shoots... And I love getting the balance of lime and fish sauce just the way I like it, with the thoughtful table condiments provided. And then the chilli! Those smoky little Thai chillies are fantastic, the balance of flavour and heat is perfect, and halfway through my bowl I start reaching for the napkins it mop my beaded forehead.
I even learned a new skill here in Springvale... I have long since mastered the art of manoeuvering silky dripping bunches of rice noodles and bean shoots to my mouth with chopsticks and spoon, with only minor soupy trauma being inflicted on my beard, but today I managed (almost gracefully) to gnaw the meat from the discs of oxtail, using nothing but chopsticks. Rock on.
This place is the genuine article. No decor, basic furnishings, great friendly staff with heavily accented English, and full of locals who KNOW what good pho is all about. Served in five minutes? You won't see that in many cafes. And a ten dollar lunch that leaves you feeling satisfied not bloated, and ready to take on the afternoon shopping for (unknown) Asian veggies at Springy Market.
Mmmsedap
My regular pho restaurant (I do enjoy the pho at their Richmond and Footscray restaurants too). They are spacious, the service is quick and friendly and of course the pho is consistently delicious. I overheard the boss lady say they have their own factory that makes the noodles. One of the best textured pho noodles around!
Bluecat
Of all my years eating pho, this is the first place that has the common sense to give me a share-bowl when I ordered a large bowl and mentioned we are sharing. They gave an extra bowl with a little soup to start you of, how thoughtful! At the others you had to ask for it :S again n again. Also they are very clean and tidy. Guess the new generation understands the value of good service!

Most underrated pho joint in springvale. Whenever i want a good bowl of pho, this is my go to! The place is clean and staff are attentive.

The pho is amazing and authentic. I highly recommend the beef pho!
EatToLive
This Pho joint becomes my favorite noodle place in Springvale now. Besides from modern fit out, their pho is outstanding. We love having 'special beef' and prawn spring rolls' here. They are just amazing! Service could be a little slow because sometimes there is only person assigned to take customers' orders. Again, this is a great place for pho especially when you don't feel like queue up at the popular pho shop close by.

As I am on a very strict health diet it is very difficult for many restaurants to meet my strict requirements. The staff and chef are fully understanding and are willing to accommodate me outside their set menus. I am now able to enjoy the restaurant environment with my family and friends and eat recommended food for my health. Thankyou and God bless you

-----14 May, 2015-----

Visited many pho restaurants in Vietnam and Melbourne. If you are looking for true authentic style pho then I'm pleased to recommend this place with confidence. Thx guys

Brilliant. I was taken here by a Vietnamese friend and now go all the time- this place is incredible- the pho is amazing- intense, clean broth- lots of good quality meat (rare beef pho and shredded chicken pho are fantastic)- the extras always stunning- often limes served rather than lemons- beautiful pots of pickled red onion on every table to add to the soup- just fantastic.
Fresh2D2
Great Stuff!. Great food and great service in a light, refreshing and clean, bright atmosphere which actually matches the Pho (broth light, clean and delicious!!) So delicious. A definite favourite with my crew. Keep up the good work PCT!

I'm a big fan of Pho.I like Pho here. It is the real taste of Vietnamese Pho. Pho is served in a hot ceramic bow with clear soup and right amount of noodle. If you like Pho style from South you can put some hoisin sauce or chilli sauce in pho and mix well. If you like Pho style from North , you should ask staff to give oil-soup ( nuoc beo)which you can see a few drop of oil on soup surface. Different style is different taste , you should try ;)). The restaurant and kitchen look clean . Good service . I would give 4.5 stars

Small porportion of the fried chicken for a very expensive price compared to other vietnamesse stores.
Not worth it, chicken was not even crispy, wouldn't recommended any rice dishes here.
Joanna
I like the pho here, I think it's better than footscray chu the ,we enjoy it a lot .

We have 3 young kids and love Vietnamese food. We are v happy with both the food and the service. We have been here multiple times. The waiters are very polite and courteous, above all they are child friendly and really do give us a v good impression. It's less busy here than the Richmond branch but the establishment and the food serving from what we can see is very clean. This really do seperate them from the other surrounding restaurants.
UdonKnowMe
Been here 3 times in the last couple of months. Excellent on all aspects. Always been very friendly service, amazing pho & very clean. Will be here often!

Very Average Pho loved watching the Parking antic. I decided to try this the other night. Ordered the Pho Bo and sat back watching the parking attempts outside, could have made a TV show of it.

Anyway the Pho arrived, hot as (almost boiling) which is really good, and looking great, not a clear as other restaurants, pretty cloudy. Started to tuck into the meal and noticed the beef (Bo) was very thickly cut and there were some really big chunks of beef, taste was good and not to salty but the chunks of beef were not right for proper Pho Bo.

Kept eating away and started hacking to the chunks of beef, noticed that they were actually thin slices (which they should be) and towards the centre still raw, considering the original heat and amount of time the only conclusion i can think of is that the meat has been portioned and frozen.

The meal was ok, parking efforts outside were outstanding (ly poor). I would not return based on the first experience, will i go back ? just to make sure the first try was an oddity i will try again after i have tried the other 30 places that i have not been to yet, also this place is fairly new (their food should be top notch) but they have not got enough regulars so i can see how having frozen beef portions is a good economic reason, unfortunately it impacts the food to much.
Time will tell here.

It's pretty gd pho here. but does not do the franchise justice. The one in Richmond is the best. Oh don't bother trying the one in Box Hill it sux.

Best pho in Springvale by far! Beautifully flavored and doesn't taste like its lathered in MSG

Oddly enough, we found ourselves on the other side of the river last weekend near Springvale. Hungry, tired and cold, pho was really a no-brainer for a cheap lunch. After securing a park after what seemed like forever, we took our grumbling bellies to the nearest pho place. Usually we would pour over urbanspoon, have a few heated discussions and then attempt to make a semi-informed lunch decision. We were far too hungry for extensive research so we settled on the first sign that hinted pho was near – Pho Chu The. We were promptly seated and shown menus. The menu here is quite a bit more extensive than your usual no-frills pho establishment and offers 3 tiers of pho sizes – small, medium and godzilla (aka large). I scoured the room for bowl sizes and decided that the large was probably far too much for even me to handle, however, I watched in awe as a dude meticulously devoured the entire bowl without even coming up for air. I ordered the medium rare beef pho ($9)
