A close and neighbouring cafe with high quality and unique food.
Their Japanese Pancakes and Dutch Baby are one of a kind and intricately combined.
The Japanese Pancakes were soft and simple in taste so that when mixed with the syrup it creates a balanced combination of the two flavours.
The Dutch Baby had a crispy crust and had scattered blueberries in the soft centre. The jam and cream mixed with the soft pastry brings together the entire dish.
The final dish, included scrambled eggs and a coleslaw salad. It’s combination allowed the taste of the corn and red cabbage to shine through.
The service was fast even with constant take away orders. Overall a fantastic experience whether it is for the food or the conversation.

Located in the quiter, less caffeinated side of Balwyn, is Travelling Bandit where you can find coffee that's just good enough to satisfy your caffeine needs.
I have been here twice over the course of a month. Once, for brunch with a friend and once while in the area and craving a coffee. From my second visit, you can probably tell that my first visit went down pretty well.

This is the type of cafe I can see myself frequenting if I lived in the area. The inside area gives of those warm, comforting, 'your local cafe' vibes while the outside seating gives you a little more space on the days you need it.

The food is also at the standard you would except from a local cafe but with a bit more variety in terms of menu options which is great. The food has just enough taste, flavour and visuals so you dont feel like you should have saved those dollars and ate at home. Same goes for the coffee.

On the downside, there isnt anything particularly 'wow' about the place in terms of food, coffee or interior to bring the crowds in or to make it one of the 'must try places for brunch'. But I don't think that's what the owners want. From my visits, I felt the cafe provides great friendly service and food with the aim to keep their regulars returning and leave a pleasant mark on new customers so they might return a second time. I didn't get vibes of wanting to make instaworthy dishes to gain more customers or anything along those lines on either of my visits which was ... kind of nice and well suited to the demographics of that area.

Back to the comment of friendly service. The highest praise point of this place has to be the friendly staff. One of the nicest, considerate staff I have ever encountered and I appreciate how patient yet attentive they are with their customers (I am quite indecisive when it comes to choosing my food..). I never felt rushed to order or felt the staff were annoyed at me. I hope they never lose this side of them.

Unfortunately, on both of my visits I missed the opportunity to take some photos (the second time I didn't feel like it was worth it considering we only ordered coffees and a bowl of chips). However, if you are in the area, I recommend you give this place a try and hopefully you will experience a similar experience as I did.

This area of North Balwyn, it’s Greythorn really, strikes me as needing a bit of a lift, foodwise at least. Travelling Bandit looked like comfortably the best cafe option on a scan of both sides of this shopping strip (although I later spotted the Jolly Miller which is in a more secluded area off the road). The cafe has street appeal then and its moderately attractive inside too and almost cute. It also has very nice front and back open areas. Most importantly, the coffee is very good here. They serve a perfectly respectable brew that would be easily at home in any of the more fancied areas. The menu is said to be good too, I understand. The cafe was doing an acceptably good trade among all age groups while I was there. The staff dealt with the custom politely and efficiently. There was a hits mix on that was mainly 80s. It was inoffensive and quite pleasant after a while.

Nice place overall. A terrific option if you’re in this area. I’d happily return another time.

Lovely little local cafe with excellent service, friendly staff, lovely decor and an absolutely stunning presentation of food. The pana cotta had a great blend of flavours with a hint of coconut and a crispy muesli. The Japanese souffle was beautifully laid out and the souffle was soft and light. An absolutely wonderful experience!

The clever name says it all. This little cafe has travelled around the world and stolen ideas and recipes to bring back to Balwyn and share with their diners. The egg hoppers are known through the Sri Lankan community and i have been told by those from there that they have revitalised the dish. but there are plenty more items on the menu to cater for all dietaries and tastes. From the classic yet not so classic eggs benedict to an extremely juicy burger. Definitely worth ducking in here for a quick meal with friendly service and fantastic coffees.

My friend took me to her local cafe which I didnt even know existed. I've passed through Doncaster Road, Balwyn North so many times, but never stopped to really pay attention to the eateries in this area! What a lovely hidden gem!!
🔆LOCATION🔆
Travelling Bandit cafe is located along the row of shops in the Greythorn Shopping area on Doncaster Road very close to Aldi. Parking is abundent along the the street or there is a parking spot behind the cafe which I think is also used for customers go shop at Aldi.

When you walk into the cafe, there are only small number of tables and is very warm and welcome feeling. There is a courtyard at the back of the cafe which opens up to a large space which is wonderful place to sit when weather is warmer.

We ended up sitting in the courtyard and the waitress turned on the large portable heaters which was nice.

🔆MENU🔆
There is a nice variety of food on the menu, including a special's menu.

Chorizo Bunelos, $18.00
(Corn and halloumi fritters with grilled chorizo, cauliflower puree, broccolini, romesco sauce, poached egg)

Eggs San Pedro, $17.00
(Two poached eggs with bacon, avocado, hash brown and hollandaise on a toasted muffin)

🔆PRICE🔆
The price is reasonable and on par with standard cafes, so we were quite pleased given the food portions was way more than enough.

🔆VERDICT🔆

The food is absolutely delicious! Travelling Bandit is a wonderful hidden local gem.The Eggs San Pedro was perfect. The presentation is outstanding.I would definitely be coming back.

Having a day off during the week we headed out to this cafe for brunch. Whilst I had the Aussie smashed Avo, with avocado on a yummy grain bread with Persian feta, honey roasted carrots, chilli pickled cabbage, sprouts and seeds. It had a beautiful blend of flavours and not too heavy, though you can add an egg. My partner demolished the Egg SAN Pedro and said he will come back again for more. Daughter ate the Japanese Soufflé pancakes see photos and she said it was amazing too! Put this place on your list to visit for the regular cafe menu done differently and better than the regular place.

Been here a few times, it's convenient and always serves good food. The menu is often updated so you'll tend to find something new; most importantly, they're always serving good coffee.

I like the theme of this cute café and the food is great! This shop features a traveling theme, where you can see a lot of icons of traveling, like clocks of different capital cities and world map. The food is tasty and well prepared. We ordered English breakfast and the burger, and ended up with a Japanese soufflé. Dishes came very quickly and we started to dig it in and forgot to take photo. I called it a “photo forgetting” meal.

My 2nd visit, because of the first. Good chai, and yummy simple toasted cheese & ham sandwich that was just that little bit more delicious 🙂. Staff welcoming, attentive, everyone friendly, and polite. It's clean, well presented, and going by the flow of customers - sit down and takeaway - it is understandably popular. Be back again .. 😌🌻🤌🍂👏💙💛🌈
