Review Tengu - Melbourne

Cute restaurant with fast service. The menu is authentic and features a balanced mix of meat, fish and vegetarian options. I had a small miso and the teriyaki salmon don, which was fantastic. Highly recommended. I'm looking forward to coming back, seeing the upstairs dining area and trying more from the menu.

I have eaten here daily for several years. A lovely family run buisness and combination of sushi , sashimi and many japanese hot dishes. My favorite dish is crispy chicken curry don. Though the handrolls are also hard to beat. Ingredients are always fresh and dishes well presented. Highly recommend for your lunch break.

Nice cosy sitting area upstairs. Really yummy food. Chicken broth is made from cooking chicken bone for a long time and no added MSG. Chicken karaage looked yum!

Decent place for a quick lunch at the corner of chancery ln. I tried teriyaki salmon don. Which is decent. Portion is slightly less for the price. It can be better. Will try some other items next time.

We went here after not being able to find any open food places on such a rainy day, and it turned out to be the best place ever! The lady is so sweet and turned a cold rainy afternoon into a very wholesome and delicious one.

Yum! Authentic, home cooked style food 😋 The curry slice is amazing! And everything is well priced with daily specials.

Had a very tasty bowl of chicken ramen! The broth was delicious and it came with a lot of tender chicken.

I was planning to go to little brother (Vietnamese restaurant next door), but ended up here. Fried chicken curry was very good.

Really happy to have found another good office lunch option along Little Collins. There was a range of Japanese dishes here - from ramen to bento boxes. The salmon poke bowl was quite special because it was carb free (no rice and crackers).

Instead, they replaced rice with healthy avocado and more generous portions of salad. There were generous bits of salmon slices peppered throughout the dish. Couldn’t get of them! Flavours worked very well too - I opted for the mayo but they also have a spicy sriracha version.

$13.9 was slightly above average pricing for the portions, but sometimes you have to pay for healthy food!
*
Taste: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Ambience: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Presentation: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Price: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Service: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Dear Luncher
Nailed it.

Absolutely nailed the crispy chicken Jap curry. Easily the best The Dear Luncher has ever encountered. The chicken was superb. Crunchy with each bite, succulent within. Perfectly crafted sauce, not overloaded with rice and carrot/potatoz which is often a ploy by some establishments.

Bravo Tengu.

Aside from the friendly staff, not sure what else i can compliment about this place.

I've been here a few times for Sushi and other items like the rice paper rolls and it's almost apparent that the staff do not take care of their food. sushi molded in poor form and the rice is flavoured bland. Whilst the Teriyaki bowl was ridiculously salty, the chicken was cooked quite nice. Shame all i could taste for 10 mins was saltiness from too much Teriyaki seasoning which could be avoided by diluting the sauce.

Trying to see that its cheap eat, but being in the heart of the business district it's failing to compete with other Japanese stores which give more bang to the buck.

Really friendly staff. Cheap tasty food, great place for a quick bite during your lunchbreak. Lots of options on the menu i recommend the dumpling miso soup.

Best sushi in this part of the city. This is the best sushi place within a few blocks of my work on Queen Street - perhaps even the best west of Elizabeth Street full stop. Great variety of fillings brilliantly executed. Not too high rice to filling ratio so you never feel ripped off. Well worth the $2.60 per roll. I love the spicy chicken and the tandoori salmon, they also do a lovely cooked tuna.

Great little japanese hideaway. Amongst the hustle and bustle of Little Collins st, Tengu Sushi offers a scrumptious fare of your basic Japanese favourites such as Teriyaki, traditional 'Katsu' curries, bento boxes and a enormous range of varying sushi, including the very hard to find 'nigiri' style egg sushi - 'Tamago'
I love to read the paper out the back with the Asian-esque tunes that seem to gently bring me back to my Japanese study trip as a kid.
The owners are friendly and are quick to serve, this place is worth 10/10 (and I am a very picky Japanese restaurant goer)

Super. This place is a city institution.
Japanese food served by southeast-asian looking people does not always equate to bad jap fare. The jap food is good, and they've incorporated some great southeast asian flavours too. Chicken curry don is outstanding and a top city cheap feed.
So go there.
