Review The Espressonist - Melbourne

Steph Hunter
Really nice, relaxed vibe. Plenty of tables and seats and a lovely, quiet view of the boats and river. The food menu is good with a decent number of options - would easily give 5 stars if there were just one or two more vegetarian/vegan options though. They have lots of tasty pastries and sweets at the counter too. Really enjoy every visit here and would consider this to comfortably be the best cafe in Docklands that I've found so far.

This place was highly recommended by the people of Docklands, so we came here for breakfast and were greeted by friendly staff. We ordered the French Toast (served with fresh berries, house made vanilla bean ice-cream, maple syrup), and the Smashed Avocado (served with poached egg, charred corn salad, whipped feta, pine nuts, pickled chilli, salsa Verde, lime zest). The French toast was not sweet, so that was a good change, and the smashed avo was zesty enough. Coffee was decent.

Love this place so much. My top go-to brunch restaurant. Great views with super friendly service. Definitely recommend French toast & sweet potato chips.

Really nice local cafe and it opens early which I like! We got chai lattes which came out quick. The service was friendly.

Nice location with a nice and tranquil view. Friendly, polite and attentive staff. The food and beverages are not only well presented, but delicious! Great place for times of indulgence or just for when having a stroll and looking for a nice selection of coffee or grab-n-gos. Prices are very competitive considering the great quality of the menu.

Very expensive for what this is -restaurant prices for cafe meals. $22 burger + $7 for fries is ridiculous. Two of us ordered poke bowls, then were told there was only enough for one bowl which is completely fine but then someone ran out to tell us actually, yes there was enough for two serves. When the meals came out it was very clear that actually there was only one serve left and it had been split in half, charged $20+ per serve. We know this as one of us had eaten here before and had the full serve poke bowl. The food was good, just incredibly over priced.

Overpriced and the very lackluster menu. Had the beef burger which made me and my mate sick. Coffee tasted like the machine was dirty and was pretty weak. Maybe they are better at night but I can't see myself coming back at lunch unless there was a big change in the offerings..

Go to place for brunch or early morning coffee as it’s just close to my place. Happy bunch servicing good and delicious food. Tried almost half of their menu thought will give a review as I never got disappointed. Must try - chilli crab scramble egg on toast, chicken burger, barramundi , smashed Ava none the least.

The Espressionist is a lovely café located at Yarra’s Edge in the Docklands. The venue currently offers a café experience in a takeaway capacity and has also turned into a makeshift greengrocer. The cafe menu features a range of brunch staples including healthy Acai Bowls and beautiful salads. In the evening, the venue offers a range of takeaway dinner options with its introduction of The Bait Shop by The Espressionist serving old school fish and chips with a flair as well as ready-to-heat meals.
Hello. Imnikki
Paying homage to espresso and expressionism, The Espressonist is part café and part art gallery. Think sleek lines, minimalistic touch and a little nook featuring plush pink chairs, greeneries and of course, art pieces.

The menu is divided into options such as “eggs”, “cold”, “burgers”, “salad” and “sweet tooth”, and I won’t blame you for wanting to get one from each category. My friend and I chose the Asian Noodle Salad with grilled chicken, Fried Chicken Burger and the Lemon Meringue. Healthy, naughty and nice – all great choices.

Brimming with clean and punchy flavours was the Asian Noodle Salad, and the grilled chicken was seasoned very well with spices and herbs. The Fried Chicken Burger comprised of a thick and tender piece of fried chicken, crispy bacon and mouth-watering aioli sauce. Ending our meal on a sweet note, the Lemon Meringue was a fruity and tarty creation, light enough to finish by oneself.

A gorgeous spot that is well worth visiting!

We absolutely enjoyed our visit here. We had a lovely brunch with the best views. We visited on the weekend so the area around is not too busy, and we loved having a relaxing time enjoying the good food and weather.
The smoothie bowl was ao good and refreshing, and their burger was great too. Don’t forget to complete your meal with their great selection of juices!

An Art Gallery Turned Cafe - Definitely Impressed!

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to The Espressionist. It was such a nice walk from Southern Cross Train Station.

The interior is stunning with light pink velvet and gorgeous greenery in the plants.

We loved the dishes. Our favourite was definitely the Short Ribs that came with an egg and delicious potatoes... for breakfast. Yes! Delicious.

The staff were wonderful and definitely very patient whilst we tried to figure out what to order. Looking forward to returning to try more dishes from this cafe.

The Espressionist is located in a scenic area overlooking the marina in Docklands making it the perfect location for a relaxed brunch/lunch.

We were greeted by super friendly, bubbly staff members who made us feel very welcome. I enjoyed the Smashed Avo, it was nothing out of the ordinary but still a great meal. I'd definitely recommend ordering the Chicken Chorizo Salad also, they are very generous with the meat. We also both rated the coffee very highly, it was the perfect strength and temperature.

Overall, the awesome location and fantastic staff definitely make the Espressionist worth a visit!

Fantastic food and coffee. A great spot overlooking the marina with a relaxed chilled vibe. The staff were lovely in particular the waitress Samantha who served us her bubbly personality made our experience even more enjoyable. Highly recommend the beef burger.

Amazing new cafe in Docklands precinct ready to take your brunch and dinner experience to the next well. Love its spacious interior overlooking Docklands jetty and river side. We love their wagyu burger and chorizo chicken potato salad. Their french toast could be a bit better in terms of bread type being used (brioche bread works perfectly I reckon)
Everthing else we had an amazing dining experience at the Espressionist
Steph
This is a lovely venue in docklands with comfortable couches and modern decor!

I really enjoyed the açai bowl and the chocolate mousse desert! It’s great you can get dessert at brunch!

The coffee was also very smooth and delicious.

Customer service was great and I would return!

What a beautiful café and setting!

Décor, vibes, service and coffee ON POINT. I loved the amount of vegan options available too :)

My FAAAAVE was the Asian Noodle Salad. Super filling + flavourful.

Definitely recommend this place for a Sunday brunch ;)

What a hidden gem in Melbourne! Definitely hidden from the main part of the city is this relaxing, delicious cafe.

We loved everything from the burgers to the açai bowl. Even the juices were fresh. The burger is definitely one of the best brunch burgers in Melbourne with the perfectly charred patty and delicious sauce.

Had a chance to visit The Espressonist last weekend and I got to say the location is gorgeous and even more on a beautiful sunny day! On the day we got:
- Beef short rib
- Açai bowl
- Special PB & J waffles
- Cold pressed OJ
- Antiox cold pressed juice
The short rib was definitely the winner. The meat was so tender and the flavours were just yum! And if you’re a PB fan you will definitely love the special waffles. We was pretty full but we just kept going back for more waffle. And the Açai bowl was pretty fresh with all the seasonal fruits although the açai blend was on a bland side. Service are great and plenty of covered outdoor seatings.
Definitely recommend this cafe if you’re nearby!

Loved trying out the food from this newly opened cafe 😍 we tried some of their juices and I thought the blue moon was really interesting and tasty!

We tried the beef cheeks, banana bread as well as the eggs benny with spinach. Loved the flavours in the beef cheeks and thought it was a very well round out dish!
The banana bread was also really crispy and loved the fresh berries too!

Defs worth checking out 😍
The Brunch Specialist
Located along South Wharf, The Espressonist is a spacious cafe by day and a restaurant by night. With plenty of seating indoors and outdoors we opted to sit inside the amongst the art gallery space

Visiting for brunch we ordered the beef short rib, Asian Noodle salad and the French Toast along with a coffee and juice to drink. Everything we ordered came out beautifully presented. The juice was refreshing and the coffee was on point.

The beef short rib was cooked to perfection, it was juicy and tender and worked really well with the potato, kimchi and fried egg. The Asian Noodle salad was simple, light and refreshing. The French toast topped with plenty of berries, maple and vanilla ricotta was a great way to finish our meal. I loved that it wasn’t overly sweet or heavy.

Overall I had a wonderful experience at The Espressonist, I thoroughly enjoyed the food and coffee and the service was exceptional. I give it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ our of 5 and recommend that you check them out if you’re in the area. Thanks very much for having me.
Melbourne Food Monkeys
Residing along the banks of the Yarra, The Espressionist is a gem of a cafe, offering a refreshingly unique menu. We tried the beef short ribs and fish finger sandwich, both of each far exceeding our expectations.

The beef was tender, crispy and packed with flavour. Another highlight was the fries (probably some of the best we’ve had). Somewhere between a thick-cut and shoestring in terms of size, every chip was fried to perfection.

Complementing the delicious food is the magnificent interior. Gloriously high ceilings are bolstered up by thick white pillars, drawing the eyes up towards an exposed network of metallic silver pipework and hanging greenery.
Gluten Free Bible
The food at The Espressonist is delicious!! The Avocado Toast was so fresh and healthy and the serving was very large and filling! The vegan Black Bean Burger with gluten free bread was absolutely delicious and was full of flavour! We also had the chocolate mousse for dessert which was one of the yummiest desserts I’ve ever had! We loved everything we were served and left feeling very happy and full! We will definitely be returning!

🎨 when expressionist meets espresso
🐮 beef short rib
🍜 asian noodle salad
🍋 lemon meringue w/ burnt white choc
🏚: The Espressonist
📍: Docklands
————————————————————
📝: The name of the cafe that originated from the combination between the word Expressionist and Espresso. Passionate in coffee and reflecting the owner’s background as an Expressionist artist, there led to the creation of this art gallery x cafe.

❤️: My favorite was the Beef Short Rib with tasty and flavorful master stock, potato, kimchi, and fried egg. Look at how perfect that egg is! If you’re looking for something light, opt for the Asian Noodle Salad. With views of the Yarra at the South Wharf end of town, The Espressonist is a gorgeous restaurant with a fabulous menu. With the recent launch of a new dinner menu, I was intrigued to see what they had to offer. As it's a cafe during the day, I was interested to see how they would develop their new foray into the dinner market, and I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised.

The venue has a large space with a modern bar down one end, lots of pastel touches, plush furnishings and a great outdoor area. With the marina on it's door step, it's views are amazing. Staff are warm and welcoming, and were more than capable of talking us through the set menu that we experienced. Service was faultless, and although it was busy, the staff still remained attentive.

The menu was a fabulous set of small degustation style courses, all using beautiful fresh produce that highlighted the region and the season. Everything was not only delicious, but also plated with elegance and finesse. Standouts were the Seaweed and Malt cracker, the Chicken skin and Chorizo sandwich, the Spanish mackerel, BBQ lamb with cos, anchovy and bacon crumb, and the Raspberry nori with cultured cream and sourdough. So much flavour and freshness with each bite; every dish was stunning. I felt that the menu was perfect for Spring and Summer, as all the courses were light; but there were enough courses that you didn't leave feeling hungry.

We also enjoyed some fabulous cocktails, and it's clear that the bar staff know their stuff. The summery drinks were a great complement to the menu, and would be fabulous to enjoy outside during the finer months.

The Espressonist is the kind of venue where you feel welcome and are able to relax and enjoy the elegant ambience. The new dinner series is a fabulous dining experience and I can't wait to return to sample more of the fabulous dishes.

A nice spacious cafe in Docklands serving up all day breakfast and brunch.

The service is friendly and knowledgeable. Had a great chat with one of the staff regarding the cocovelle coconut latte, which I might add is a must try!

The acai bowl was generous and the texture and consistency was uniquely different. It was smooth, thick and "sticky"but in a good way. The cashew cheese was also an interesting touch adding to the "stickiness" of the bowl. Only feedback for the bowl is to have less berries in the smoothie base as it overpowers the acai flavour.

The coconut latte is absolutely delicious. It's vegan friendly and taste amazing.

Over all great cafe with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating.
The Dear Luncher
The Dear Luncher can only judge by the iced coffee, but judge he most certainly will as this was an elite exponent of an iced caffeineited beverage. This place seems like a sleek operation. Staff attentive and helpful.

Great coffee and even better atmosphere. food from bluebag and pastries from noisette what could go wrong with that combination and the view!

A new spot for coffee at Docklands and the coffee is definitely first class. Some danish sandwiches and salads on the menu today as well but I just preferred coffee, a lovely spot overlooking the marina.
Roslyn Foo
A perfect cafe, I'm totally in love! Awesome staff brewing specialty Seven Seeds coffee, selling fresh Noisette pastries, healthy juices and trifles, surrounded by incredible visual art within a contemporary gallery space, overlooking beautiful Yarra river, minimalistic deco with ample space.. yes I'm in love.
Demian Carey Gibbins
Excellent coffee, healthy fresh and affordable meals to go in beautiful surrounds. Yaghts out the front and fine art inside make this a unique destination. The food is a collaboration with Bluebag Melbourne, famous for its quick and easy, affordable and healthy lunch options. But the biggest selling point of the espressonist is the coffee. It really is some of the best in Melbourne.
Anika Brandsma
Lovely place, really nice that's in the same building as the art gallery. Had a tasty wrap and a good coffee. The staff is really friendly as well, and very enthusiastic about the art in the gallery!

Oh how I love the coffee at the espressonist! the baristas are true coffee connoisseurs and the have all the apparatus an knowledge to make the perfect shot. One thing I didn't know was that humidity in the air can change coffee beans. The baristas at the espressonist took the time to passionately explain how they monitor the shot and they constantly weigh, refine the grind and keep a flavour note profile in their log book. I've got some strict dietary requirements and i found their menu was not only comprehensive and delicious, but also so well priced! My favourite is the Superfood salad which is so good for you, you feel like a zen-master of health while you eat it.
Robin Hagemans
I just love the espressonist. I'd go and have coffee there everyday if I could. Food wise I've tried two of their soups, the garden shovel salad and a couple of the sandwiches and baguettes and so far I liked them all! the espressonist is located inside a gallery and it's wonderful to sit in between the always stunning art .
Melbourne Epicurean Juror
Popped in for a healthy light lunch late morning today and selected their pre-packaged chilled Vietnamese Chicken (Chinese cabbage, chicken breast, carrot, cucumber, edamame, Vietnamese dressing, chilli, peanuts, fried shallots, rocket, coriander, spring onion & Vietnamese mint) for $9.90 and it wasn't real bad. I feel this eatery needs some form a hot meals other than a small range of 3 types of soup, there's a chef employed & I feel he's being underutilised Service provision was good but I was a tad disappointed that I wasn't even offered a glass of cold water. The most striking aspect of this eatery is it's décor, it resembles a mini art gallery.

The Juror's Verdict: Food 3.5/5, Service Provision 4/5, Will I return: Maybe, depending upon whether they increase their range of hot meals

Phill Jury (food critic & writer)
