I come here to meet my mum off the train at Southern Cross and it's a winner, the staff are unflappable and genuinely polite. The food is always good, the salads being especially tasty and good value. I had the vege breakfast last time, it was great and at $16 pretty good for the CBD. The atmosphere and physical environment and very pleasant also.
Another one of those places where one can walk past hundreds of times and never venture in. This is mainly due to it being part of The Age building. However, it is recommended that you take the time to venture in. A great array of breakfast options. The Dear Luncher thoroughly enjoyed the egg/bacon royale, toasted. A terrific sandwich with quality bacon and yolky goodness. The long macchiato served was pretty good. Straddling the line nicely between punchy/slightly bitter caffeine and creamy. Quite a decent breakfast experience and despite the fact that there were loads of people around, service was extremely fast.
Esspresso Hub is the cafe located on the bottom level of The Age building - on the corner of Collins and Spencer - across the road from Southern Cross train station. The Swine has frequented this place for a long long time - coffee in the morning and something to eat at lunchtimes. This is a great meeting place, it's nice inside, and staff are attentive and friendly. The Swine thinks the coffee used to be sensational - but - lost its magic as popularity grew for this cafe. It's a shame that the "love" in making great coffee can sometimes be lost with barristas being flat out busy due to demand. It is understandable. With this, the Swine only has the occasional coffee here now, but at off-peak times of the day. The Swine did have lunch at the Age Hub today. There is a great variety of salad options - at reasonable prices. The big fat Swine considered but today was not a salad day. The Swine went with a chicken sammich option. Again very very good in the taste department - delish! The Swine thinks the Hub is a very likable place. It is Swine Approved - but be wary of coffee at peak times if you are a coffee snob.
