Review Espresso Hub - Melbourne

Richard T.Whybrow
Sunny the barista makes a great Mocca Cuppacino. Staff are very friendly, nice and professional. Lots of snacks available and you might see radio stars dinning at this cafe from the local radio station 3AW housed in the building. There is plenty of room to sit, relax, and take in the views of Collins and Spencer Street. On a good sunny day you can sit outside on the grassed area and enjoy the sunshine with a warm beverage.

Lots of choice when it comes to sandwiches and salads. Serving sizes are decent for the prices and there are plenty of staff to take orders. My only comment is that for the price I paid for my serving of chips I expected a little more, but also they gave me the wrong foccacia from what I had ordered.

Great coffee and nice breakfast. Easy to get to and can always find a seat. Every time I’ve been here the weather has been spectacular - don’t know that I can credit this place with that but it makes a good impression.

Love their salads for lunch. Various salads to choose from and they're all good. Portion is generous for a small size (only $7.90 take away). You can choose up to 3 options.

Presentation could have been better. Wish the heart on coffee was hearty. Brownie couldn't make it to top 10s of what I've had.

Some of the reasons i like going here is (a) better food and drink than you will get at any place at Southern Cross Station (b) has a chilled vibe and would be good to meet a friend or friends there (c) it’s bloody warm much better than the icebox across the road. Food is a bit exxy but the above points make up for it!

Great location, just across from a major train station, good for a quick coffee and muffin stop while waiting in transit.

An open and airy venue. Very modern at the bottom of The Age building and directly opposite the Southern Cross station. Good quality coffee with table service in quieter hours. Pleasant outdoor seating too.

I come here to meet my mum off the train at Southern Cross and it's a winner, the staff are unflappable and genuinely polite. The food is always good, the salads being especially tasty and good value. I had the vege breakfast last time, it was great and at $16 pretty good for the CBD. The atmosphere and physical environment and very pleasant also.

3.5<br/>It took me 2 years and two months since my last review to revisit Expresso Hub. Always hopeful of improvement I was pleasantly surprised at how good the coffee actually was, I ordered a latte in combination with a bagel for breakfast and enjoyed them both. Glad I gave them another chance. <br/><br/>~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~<br/>Previous Review<br/><br/>2<br/>Got my breakfast from Espresso Hub this morning. Located in the AGE building this foyer cafe has plenty of appeal with green outlooks and a relaxed atmosphere. Plenty of communal tables and the most vibrantly colourful breakfast cabinet I have seen recently. I took up the ham and cheese croissant and a coffee offer and had mine toasted. Very quick turnaround of both coffee and said croissant. I had no sooner finished snapping photos and both were done.<br/><br/>Sadly the coffee was in no way adequate. Weak and luke warm. Had I not discovered this on my first sip across the road, a good third of my way to work I would have definitely gone back and demanded that I make the coffee... I know for an absolute fact that I would have done a much better job 😡😡😡<br/><br/>Croissant was actually pretty well put together apart from the burnt top but this in no way detracted from my foul mood as a result of the money wasted at this establishment

2.5/5 <br/>This is a nice cafe inside 'The Age' building opposite Southern Cross Train Station.<br/><br/>The service was alright, it’s efficient. They have self serve water which was nice and a huge library of you want to read something. <br/><br/>I ordered a strong skinny latte and the price was good.<br/>But my coffee wasn't very good unfortunately. I saw the male barista pour my milk and it was just a production line w little attention to detail. It was another flat white. <br/><br/>The coffee flavour was earthy and not too pleasant. Overall a disappointing experience.

Sorry to say but it is such a shame for that place to have such a less than average quality food and coffee. came in 1.20 pm burgers on display are left outside on a tray no protection from anything like people sneezing nearby and things like that. asked how long they have been there and i have been told 1 hour or more.still ordered it , as nothing else was really appealing . comes to the table a flat pile of fries with the burger sitting on top which has been warmed up in the microwave !!! totally soggy totally over cooked meat cooked salad etc . 14.99 to eat two bites and push the plate away . for that price i do expect better care and quality of food. coffee is terrible too . the owner of this place must get its act together .
The Dear Luncher
Another one of those places where one can walk past hundreds of times and never venture in. This is mainly due to it being part of The Age building. However, it is recommended that you take the time to venture in. A great array of breakfast options. The Dear Luncher thoroughly enjoyed the egg/bacon royale, toasted. A terrific sandwich with quality bacon and yolky goodness. The long macchiato served was pretty good. Straddling the line nicely between punchy/slightly bitter caffeine and creamy. Quite a decent breakfast experience and despite the fact that there were loads of people around, service was extremely fast.
The Swine
Esspresso Hub is the cafe located on the bottom level of The Age building - on the corner of Collins and Spencer - across the road from Southern Cross train station. The Swine has frequented this place for a long long time - coffee in the morning and something to eat at lunchtimes. This is a great meeting place, it's nice inside, and staff are attentive and friendly. The Swine thinks the coffee used to be sensational - but - lost its magic as popularity grew for this cafe. It's a shame that the "love" in making great coffee can sometimes be lost with barristas being flat out busy due to demand. It is understandable. With this, the Swine only has the occasional coffee here now, but at off-peak times of the day. The Swine did have lunch at the Age Hub today. There is a great variety of salad options - at reasonable prices. The big fat Swine considered but today was not a salad day. The Swine went with a chicken sammich option. Again very very good in the taste department - delish! The Swine thinks the Hub is a very likable place. It is Swine Approved - but be wary of coffee at peak times if you are a coffee snob.

A great cafe just a quick stroll from work. Happy to say it has one of the best and biggest salad bars in the city.. Always quick service with a smile with every coffee. Occasionally i go for the Friday burger.

Very good food. Variety of food. Meats, salads, pasta and sandwiches. Coffee is very good. But what i love best is its spacious and nice big view of busy spencer street.... oh and smoking area

This spacious and cool cafe is in a great location and is a beautiful space. <br/>The food is sensational. I mostly go for the delicious and fresh salads. The food is great and a reasonable price. Coffee is top notch. <br/>This cafe could take it to the next level if there was a more personable approach from the staff. A couple are friendly and sweet but for the most part you don't get a smile with your coffee. This is disappointing because so many CBD morning coffee places are working hard to make you feel the love because competition is intense.

Good place for a quick coffee. Extremely efficient staff and a real decent deployment of pay wave technology. <br/><br/>Cheap brekkie bites, expect to pay in the teens for lunch.

Disgusting. Food looks good but is laden with salt and oil. The "healthy salads" are not- dirty and old lettuce leaves. The sandwiches are oily. It's only got people in it because they are time poor and work in the building!

Better than the coffee I drank as an ink-stained wretch. In my first career, before I became a globe-trotting bum-wiper, I was a newspaper reporter for 10 years. We referred to ourselves as "ink-stained wretches" -- I started in the era when we still banged out our stories on typewriters with old-fashioned ink ribbons, not on computer keyboards. That was four decades ago, but I still miss the field. We journos drank gallons of crap American percolator coffee to keep our minds sharp on deadline. Because I live close to Espresso Hub, I had a cuppa there to dip my finger in the inkwell again.<br/><br/>The flat white that Espresso Hub made me is leagues better than the watery swill I drank in the U.S. Espresso Hub's brew is up to Melbourne standards, which means excellent. Robust flavour, properly microfoamed. This cafe has a nicer variety of sweet pastries than many in office towers do, plus a good selection of salads in addition to the sandwiches you see at similar operations. I reckon if you're in a building full of opinionated newspeople, you'd better do it right or catch flak from the hacks who buy ink by the barrel. Seating inside is open and airy (hard-surface chairs and benches, though.) The best place in good weather is on their spacious patio, where you can look out over the busy transport hub of Spencer Street Station and Collins Street.

Great Pit Stop. Was in the area the other day and had a quick Coffee. Loved the Coffee as Im little fussy.<br/>The food looked so inviting, I need to go back as it was screaming 'Eat Me'<br/>Thanks guys...

Friggin Yum.. Abundance of variety is all I can come up with when I think of this place. Great bunch of salads, always tasty and filling. Hot food always changes. Guaranteed good lunch.
