Review Austro Bakery - Melbourne

Mei Zhang
Lovely and cozy bakery place around South Melbourne Market. You can dine in and sit outside to enjoy the sunshine ☀️ You can have some nice coffee and pastries before your weekend grocery shopping in the South Melbourne Market. Highly recommended the Fig white chocolate tart, the best combination ever! 😋

🏠: @austrobakery 📍: South Melbourne 📝: Visited this cute little cafe in South Melbourne, just a small walk from the South Melbourne Market. Can’t believe I’ve never been here before. Such a nice laidback spot with amazing bakeries with Central European flavors and modern Melbournean accents. ❤️: I panicked bought a ton of bakeries that the staff their asked if I was having a “party”. Well, I shamelessly said no and that all these pastries were for me 🤪 (and a sanga for my boyfriend 😅). I loved loved loved the Miso Eggplant Danish (AMAZING FLAVORS 😍). I was intrigued with the Baklava Danish and Vienna Coffee Scrolls—both did not disappoint! Also grabbed an issue of the Tart Magazine. Loved the collection of recipes, food commentary and articles.

I had a morning cinnamon chocolate bun with almond cappuccino on good Friday. Everything was barely open but Austro bakery was open luckily. Cinnamon chocolate bun(or scroll) was nice and sweet coffee was good but average. I got a baguette and hot cross bun as well. Baguette was so good, going very well with avo eggs.

Light lunch #1 @AustroBakery for Austrian style baked goods at this relaxed cafe, just a stone'sthrow away from the South Melbourne Markets. I got the paprika chicken pie and a custard and plum compote Danish. The pie has such light flaky golden brown pastry encasing a lovely shredded chicken mixture. Very enjoyable and enhanced with the tomato relish for a sweet and tart tang. I also liked the Danish with dense layers of pastry and I liked the firm custard that didn't ooze all over on each bite. The plum compote is excellent, just the right balance of subtle sweetness the pastry needs. Lovely creation. #Austrianfood #bakery #pie #pastry #paprikachicken #Danish #custard #dessert #sweettooth #dessert #foodie #melbournefood @zomatomelb

A beautiful bakery is located close to South Melbourne Market. Good atmosphere to have bread and coffee.

The pastries were nice and flaky, and not overly sweet. The variety is pretty amazing, and I would say different to the usual offerings. Definitely recommend this place.

Mouth watering range of baked goods, another good reason to venture southside. The pie's are super flakey, with dense, chunky innards. Come one, come all!!

Thank you Austro Bakery for making my birthday special! I was walking on the street and went into the bakery after seeing the fun & unique window display. During the covid lockdown, I started to quit eating processed sugar. So, I wasn't gonna get any cakes. However, I found a delicious looking quiche. Although I didn't plan anything, it was such a nice alternative. The quiche was best ever! 🤩 Thank you.
If you enjoy pretzels and sauerkraut this place is for u. I have the breakfast pretzel and for the price it was delicious and filling. Had the bee sting cake which is my favourite but was disappointed that the cake tasted a little bit dense and dry :( I so desperately wanted this place to be amazing

As a lover of cakes of all shapes and sizes, I've made it my mission to visit bakeries all over Melbourne to sample as many as I can. Not many are as pretty as Austro bakery in South Melbourne. It has a cute ambience. Light filled with several indoor and outdoor tables, it has a European feel, especially with the cool mural on the wall. The staff are so sweet, and were great at describing the cakes to us.

The cakes and pastries are as pretty as a picture, but also delivered on flavour. Lots of delicate pastels make them so appealing to the eye, and it was really difficult to decide what to have. We were super happy with our choices, as they weren't too sweet, and they were lovely and fresh. The tart had beautifully short pastry and a zingy curd filling, and the pistachio cake was light and nutty.

If cakes and pastries are your thing, especially in pretty settings, then Austro bakery is one that you should add to your must visits. I know we will be back.

Happened to see Austro Bakery as I was driving past and decided to pop in with my mum and we were so surprised.

The cafe feels so warm and inviting and the staff were super nice.

I can literally say that they make the best Mocha I have ever tasted, it was so smooth and frothy and didn’t require any sugar which was great. I teamed it up with the Black Forest cake which was so delicious and a real burst of flavour while feeling so light.

I absolutely love this cafe and can’t wait to return.

What a nice European cafe. It definitely has a lot of choices to choose from. Both savoury and sweet, it is hard to choose! I ordered a pretzel breaky. It reminded me of traditional Bavarian breakfast including the traditional Senf. The cherry bundt was not overly sweet, perfect with coffee. If you're ever near south Melbourne market, give this one a try.

Such a cute, cosy bakery with a wide range of pastries and a fantastic breakfast menu. Get the eggs verdi which is baked eggs in a kale & parsley sauce. I normally don't like kale but they do it so well with the parsley sauce. The coffee is great too and the pastries & cake are delicious. The doughnuts particularly were yum - I had a creme brulee one and it had the perfect crackly top.

Loved this find in South Melbourne! This is such a trendy bakery with really European styled items. I loved the different menu items, I got this antipasto plate which has a bretzel! So good! Plus enjoyed the salmon on rye! Another must visit place when you’re around!

I cannot rave enough about this place. Everything I’ve tried has been amazing - pies, pastries, pretzels, coffee etc etc. Try the Vienna coffee, the pineapple danish and the marshmallow cookie. You won’t be disappointed!

Delicious food and friendly service. The scrambled egg brioche was delightfully light and tasty as was the mini pastrami on rye. Topped off with a toffee glazed donut oozing with creamy custard and I was absolutely happy with this place. The price point is great too for such fabulous food.
Hello. Imnikki
Austro Bakery has been on my wish list for ages and it is with great pleasure to announce that it has now been promoted to my "must return" list.

The pretzel plate won me over immediately. The pretzel with its crisp yet chewy texture, deep brown sheen and distinctive taste, and the various accompaniments (beetroot relish, pickles, cheeses, and the pastrami and prosciutto) resulted in a well-rounded dish that was balanced in flavour and texture.

The Ottoman's Galette was also a thing of beauty. The soft fluffy brioche paired with the spiced shakshuka sauce and the runny egg was simple yet heavenly. The tartine was relegated to third best after that.

It was without a doubt that I wasn't going to leave without dessert, and it was a wise decision on my part. The Austrian donut (Krapfen) was amazing! The toffee glaze added an element of crunch to the soft donut, and the custard was dreamy and smooth. My partner however preferred the coffee and almond financier, which was lovely in flavours but nothing extraordinary otherwise.

I left with a small haul to take home. The apple strudel and passion fruit creme brulee tart had me wanting more. This place is starting to get really dangerous - for my hips, and my wallet

Our skinny lattes were reasonably good, but what was great was the service. Both the staffs who served me were warm and friendly, patient and helpful, and made everyone felt right at home.

I'm not really a sweets kind of person, Austro has changed that. Their pastries and coffee are to die for. Apart from all the delicious pastries I have tried there I would also highly recommend the 'Eggs Verdi'!

Its so good to have a great Bakery south of the river where we can buy delicious central euro tortes, cakes, pies and breads. Im so sick of layered flavoured gelatine cakes alla zumbo. Best coffee in the hood! Austro twists the authentic in such a satisfying and original way!

I visited Austro Bakery this weekend and I overheard a number of people, just like me, visited because of the Broadsheet review.

Austro has a relatively large dining space and would have been so good for families to have breakfast before visiting the market, but alas they don’t actually provide high chairs.

The breakfast menu wasn’t extensive, but they do have a lot of breakfast-looking pastries for sale. I decided on a ham and cheese croissant for my little one and tried the egg Verdi with parsley and kale. The ham and cheese croissant was nice although a little burnt. The egg verdi tasted quite healthy although because it’s baked, the egg tasted a bit rubbery and over cooked on top.

I also got their cakes takeaway. Their chocolate babka was actually very dry and not very chocolatey, thankfully their chocolate raspberry cake was really yummy. All in all, there are better options around South Melbourne so I won’t be going back in a hurry.

Coffee was bad. I ordered the sourdough toast with butter and jam. It is just okay and not really worth the price, can get better sourdough elsewhere

A new bakery to add to our list! We had a pretzel and the ottoman croissant but it was hard not to try everything on offer in the amazing spread at the counter. Will definitely be coming back for the sweet treats!

Austro Bakery is the latest addition to our South Melbourne “Coffee & Cake” scene. We had a selection of tasty bites along with a slice of the BeeSting cake. The Vienna Coffee and Almond Financier was my favourite of our selection and I would probably come back just for that! Good coffee, friendly staff and lots of tasty treats to choose from. There’s also a selection of light savoury dishes if you would prefer.

A great bakery in a lovely space. The baked goods were done well and there was a creative selection on offer. The pricing was a little steep though. Expect to pay $8.50 for a pie or loaf of bread! Lots of seating available so a good place to sit, eat and settle over a chat.

New bakery opened near South Melbourne Market. Great coffee and selection of sweet treats with a few savoury options for a light breakfast. Everything is baked and prepared on site so it’s all fresh a tasty. Staff are friendly and pleasant.
