Review Oda Sushi - Melbourne

Elle r
Service was really slow and bad. my miso soup came right away.. then it was a long wait for my partners udon... and then it was an even longer wait for my food to come. My partner had finished midway though waiting for my food and I had to drink my miso soup so it didn’t get cold. The food tasted okay and was cooked well but “lacking”. Definitely not authentic Japanese-more of an Asian fusion. I was surprised there was something drizzled on my rice and not my fried pork and there was no seasoning for the tempura so it tasted bland despite being well cooked (even table salt would have helped if you wanted to cut on a dipping sauce). Also why was there broccoli in the udon noodles? That’s so strange. Although it didn’t really bother me so much my partner was complaining about the lack of ventilation and kitchen smoke that kept pouring into the restaurant. The price was very cheap though, and we were full from the meal. Good portion sizes and variety for what you pay for. I think if the restaurant took more care in customer service and brushed up a bit more on Japanese food or hired a Japanese chef the restaurant could be a winner. I felt like it’s almost there, they are getting all the easiest and most simple things wrong. The food is actually cooked quite well, the presentation and seasoning is just off which destroys the flavor and makes it taste culturally confused.

Do not recommend this place, we went there because my daughter wanted the sushi train but they stopped it at about 8.pm just after we arrived and there wasn't much on it anyway. The meals were hit and miss (agadeshi tofu was good but grissly thigh chicken instead of breast in my mum's order despite the picture showing breast) more importantly the staff were pushy and rude, not one bit of friendly service. We had to get our own menus and water and they pushed our order through telling us we would miss out otherwise but ppl came 30 minutes afterwards and still got served albeit rudely too. I love japanese restarsunts and have never rated one so low ever before, im not hard to please but this place was shocking.

I stopped in here on a whim with a hungry belly and a hankering for something hearty. I had the Katsu Curry Udon and it was just delicious. It came out very quickly and was piping hot. The broth was so hearty it warmed the cockles of my heart! This was a really good value meal in a very convenient location. The staff were very friendly and there is a great selection of dishes to choose from.

I thought the sushi train here was good, fresh and reasonably priced starting at $2.80. The gyoza off the menu was good and I found nothing wrong with the service.

My daughter loved their salmon fried rice while I got to try the salmon maki. It has an unlimited sushi train at 15 dollars per person which I wanted to try but I didn't have time earlier. It's clean and laid back.

Noodle is super hard and undercooked. Shrimps and chicken long time at frozen 😌 staff attentive though.

Just down the street from busy and crowded Degraves Lane. Loved seeing the sushi conveyor belt. Ordered a bento box and quite happy with the quality and quantity of food, no waiting to be seated, food comes quickly and you can get a complete meal for one person without a drink for under $15.00.

There are honestly better Japanese places. Service was bare minimum and I waited 30 minutes for my oyakodon and it looked very quickly thrown together. Not what I expected for $13.50.

Stopped by for a quick lunch yesterday. The service was quick and staff was friendly. I got the chicken terriyaki. It is not too bad.

We tried the Shabu Shabu hot pot for lunch, was great experience, soup base is very yummy, meat and veggies plate are nice. Will go back soon.

This Japanese restaurant is great to grab a quick takeaway, with plenty of options to choose from (you can also eat in). Today I grabbed a quick lunch pack to go, my favourite one from here is the salmon pack.

This delicious and fresh sushi was deceptively filling, so much so, I couldn’t finish it.

My only comment would be the staff could be a tad friendlier, but I have no issues with the food.
KD

The main thing going for this place is its nice ambience - it has a separate area for the sushi train and a general dining area if you prefer to choose items off their menu.

While the presentation of their food was impressive, the overall taste was a huge let down. For the bento box, the meat was dry and the vegetables were limp. The lifeless udon was not much better.

This was more like visiting a food court outlet with mediocre offerings. Sayonara Oda Sushi!

It’s my first time but also last time to visit this restaurant. Because of its convenient location, I came for lunch by myself. I ordered oyako don and their taste is just extremely awful, not to mention their service. It’s not Japanese food. Fake!!!

More deserving of a 2.5 really. The Japanese food here is quite mediocre and nothing special. It's pretty spacious inside. The service was okay, we were served promptly. Pricing is average, although for the quality of sushi, there are other cheaper sushi trains available elsewhere. If you're just looking for a quick bite and aren't too fussy, this is a decent place to eat at. In comparison; sushi hub on swanston might be better but there are always lines and its super busy and loud.

One of the below average Japanese restaurants in the city. Food was average, service was poor.
Waiters not so helpful and forgetful. Though great location. Maybe they are better at sushi.

If you’re looking for a quick affordable yummy meal, this is the place. Came across this place while on the search for a quick dinner.
Sushi train was very appetising.
We ordered the chicken and beef rice bowls. Both come out steaming and fresh.

The menu is very affordable, won’t be disappointed. The star are friendly and attentive and food came out in 5 mins. Lots of seating space.

The restaurant looks so nice and the sushi look should try next time. But I had Kimchi Chicken Don for my lunch, it was a bit salty, chicken very soft and yummy. Overall is not too bad. Thank you.
Good Food, Good Mood
First time trying this place for dinner 🍣🍱🚂 This is a sushi train and a la carte restaurant. I wanted a quick feed so I got the cooked tuna and teriyaki chicken roll, the latter being my favourite. I hate it when you look at the sushi roll from both ends and one side is purely rice, hmph ☹️ the miso soup took a little bit to come out but was delicious and just what I needed on a winters day. Would go here to try to sushi train! The service was lovely!

Very nice sushi located in the lovely Flinders Lane. Hard to find because it's got a small entrance but it gets much larger in the dining area. Sushi is of high quality, will often walk down from uni to grab a bite. Thanks.

Nice for a quick (sushi train) meal. Would have liked to have the "make customer comfortable" courtesy when seated but sadly did not receive, I was however quite happy to be left in peace for the rest of my meal and pleased to receive some attention and friendly assistance when it was time to settle the bill. Sushi train selection was quite limited but fair quality.
M For FOOD And Drinks Occasionally.
Among the culinary wealth of Flinders Lane , Japanese seems to be a popular choice at the moment. Oda Sushi offers a casual option without the big theatre. Take away is available or you sit down for the á la carte or a sushi train. We opted for the former. Staff were friendly and quick to attend. Gyoza, beef and eel fried rice were the choices for the day. Arriving in good time and tasty too, this is a place for a quick bite, just a stone throw away from always busy Degraves Street.

I sat down for the sushi train here out of convenience and probably won’t be back for the experience again. The large size of the restaurant meant that the wait staff couldn’t really focus their attention on a lot of customers and I found I had a bit of trouble trying to grab someone to order some tea. The sushi was average at best and the selection available was a pretty standard affair.

Quite a easy way to grab a fast traditional japanese hot food. A Katsu don this time and I also discovered that they "do have" katsu curry don as well, but not on the menu. Will order one next time. The Katsu is tender and tastes is above average.

We came here for the sushi train before noon on a week day so the selection was a bit limited. Sushi train is a great way to have a quick meal. We see that when it's closer to lunch time, there are more selection added to the train. 1 cup of hot green tea (per person) is complimentary.

On flinders lane, not obvious to be seen from the outside but nice place inside. Lots of choices on menu with good service. Personally love the sushi here the most. Definitely will come back again.

I really like it. Because it it not too expensive and the food there is not bad. It is very suitable place for catching up with friends. Plus I like the menu, easy to read and understand.

The place is bright and clean. I ordered Shuji ramen, the noodle was well cooked and I thought the broth was pretty good as well (not too heavy). Probably will come again:)

Lovely place! Strong Japanese atmosphere! The food was quite good, excellent range of reman. I still remember the taste of everything I ate!

A nice place to have lunch during the lunch break if you work around here. Quite pleased with their quick and warm service. Staffs are friendly and they do make good sushi in good price.

Sushi is quite bad, service is appalling. Impatient servers were visibly angry when I asked for my takeaway sushi too be cut up... Not mention she did a terrible job of it.

Edit - this sushi is so horrible, I can't even get through half of it.
Danfengchen1984
again twice. the ramen is much better than before. the service always good. The staffs are lovely. But the price is high than used to... at’s why lose the my interest in this store.
Bento box is not bad. Pork chops are crisp and the rice is not very hard. The price is reasonable. but the staff is slowly and just like internship ,they do not have smile on the face .

I've been to this shop many times n the food is delicious. I especially love their Katsu Chicken with Curry. Nice environment n friendly staffs. It was really busy and crowded today but the team still enthusiastically deliver the food and service. Would definitely recommend this place to my friends!

I’ve been here previously for sushi roll takeaway, but now it’s called Oda Sushi thought we would dine in this time. The staff are unfriendly and disorganised which wasn’t a great start, then we ordered the Gyu don and Oyako don. The food arrived and looked very different with the menu.

The Gyu don was pretty good with nice flavour and soft beef, but the Oyako don was a disappointment with little flavour and chicken seemed old too. We both focused on the beef and avoided the chicken, luckily the servings are a good size so we didn’t leave hungry. Over all was not a very good experience, will just pop in for quick take away sushi in future.

Waiting almost 45 mins for a bendo box. Taste so bad service is bad as well. Can't believe how does this restaurant survive in CBD. Can't stand such a long waiting time

Highlight: soft shell crab!

A nice little Japanese place on the ever popular Flinders lane. Service was good and dishes come out quickly over lunch.

As mentioned soft shell crab was amazing, with everything else meeting expectations for the price point.

Horrendous food and equally horrendous customer service. I would rate this place -10/10 if it were possible. Upon arrival, the waitstaff at front advised us to sit in front of the sushi train. After a while of sitting down and ordering our food, a different waitstaff says "you can't sit here if you're not eating off the sushi train" and orders us to move all the way to the other end of the restaurant.

Describing the Teriyaki Don as "horrible" would be a vast understatement. It was excruciatingly bland and had no trace of Teriyaki sauce in it. Seemingly, the chicken tasted like it was cooked in soy sauce. Only two stalks of tough, undercooked broccoli came with the dish. To top it all off, we ordered green tea and expected this to arrive before our food, but alas, to our dismay, this did not arrive until we had finished our food. $2.80 for a measly cup of green tea (tea bag) - what a waste of money.

All-in-all, the worst restaurant we have been to. Safe to say, that was the first and last visit to this place for us.

Best sushi I have ever eaten! The crispy chicken it the greatest! I highly recommend the visit here. I would drive an hour to come to this place!

Pretty average place to have japanese food in my opinion. The food was not bad but it wasn't good either. Other japanese places seem to have either cheaper, tastier food, or more unique food. Also there was no patron at the sushi train, and the sushi were just circling a long for god knows how long. That didn't look good at all.

I was looking for a brunch place today and I found this Japanese restaurant which I was hoping would be pretty reliable.

The service was ok, efficient. I didn't ask for a drink and I wasn't offered any water.

I saw that they had a sushi train and bento boxes. 2 big piles of food for the sushi train was sitting on the counter behind tube till ready to be put onto plates. Mmnn no thanks haha

So I ordered a pork bento box ($15). I got a very salty miso soup initially which was alright but I was getting thirsty.

Funnily enough the pork bento box came with some battered something! My first bite was crunchy and I either ate a bone or some fish scales. It was hard to tell. In fact it wasn't until my second piece that I realised that I may have been eating fish. The first piece didn't taste like fish, more like deep fried batter. The fish was in a honey soy sauce. Mmnn hahaha

The bento came with some tempura, which was greasy, some sushi coleslaw ... mmnn very different hahaha

And some sushi which was alright. Then I had some pork which was ok and the rice. There was some coleslaw that was really wet and gluggy that
I didn't eat.

Overall this was a really average experience. I can't recommend that you don't go here highly enough lol.

It's almost couple of hours of hours later and I've def swallowed a bone as something is stuck in my throat. I just hope it's not fish scales!

A Chinese operated Japanese restaurant.

Prices are reasonable for variety of bento.

Two types of seats available - one on the bar top with sushi train and the other the table seating for hot food.

Took the hot food table as I was after some hot noodle soup. Menu was mainly bento sets and ramen, with only two udon choices.

Had a gyu udon. Taste ok and portion is sufficient.

Recommend if you are looking for a quick afternoon set lunch, alone or in group.

Visited this Shuji Sushi a few times and am always left feeling underwhelmed. The sushi itself isn't stand out, and when you have cheaper, less expensive places nearby it doesn't really cut it. The hot food takes a while and is a bit pricier than your average Japanese takeaway in Melbourne. When you have other food options, take them.

Details: I know the reviews here are pretty average but I have to disagree because of all my lovely experiences at Shuji Sushi. My sushi rolls have been on par with sushi sushi and if you're following me then you'll know that I think highly of sushi sushi! I especially love that this place gives free miso soup.

Service: Friendly staff!

Decor: your average sushi bar.

There used to be a Shuji Sushi near the post office on 250 Flinders Lane then they shut down. Since then another one has opened up just a bit further up at 238 Flinders Lane. I thought this would be a good chance to see if I’ve found a good place near work for regular Unadon. Unadon ($15.00)Since this is served in a lacquer bento box, it should really be called an Unajyu. Immediately I liked the sauce, the menu had listed it as Shuji Sushi teriyaki sauce and the website claims all their sauces are made from original recipes. The first few bites at the top end of the unagi was soft and melted in my mouth, but as I got closer to the end bit it started to get rubbery and cooler. I’m not sure if it’s cooler because it’s not heated up enough. The sauce itself was hot temperature-wise so that can’t be the reason. I’m not sure if I want to come back for this dish, it’s quite costly to take another risk.

I ordered a couple sushi rolls and edamame for lunch. The rolls were alright, but the edamame was frozen. I'm not talking about a little bit frozen; I mean fresh out of the freezer frozen. When I asked the server if it could be heated she just checked if there were less frozen ones, then apologised and served someone else. Am I wrong to assume that a minimum standard when buying restaurant food is that you are able to eat it as is? The fact that I had to defrost part of my lunch in the office microwave made buying it at a sushi restaurant pointless. I could have got a large bag of frozen edamame from Woolies for the same price.
