Review Natural Tucker Bakery - Melbourne

John Cummings
Look at all the olives! A fan of sourdough nread, I this bakery for the first time and was amazed by the taste and smell of the olive/rosemary loaf. It was simply delicious and I had to stop myself from finishing the entire loaf. Great find in the sleepier part of Melbourne.

Recently, the quality of their pastries has diminished, in flavour pand size. There's also too much concentration on doughnut style choices. As for the hot cross buns, $18 for 6 is a bit much. Bring back the days when buying a scroll was an outstanding eating experience.

Delicious pies, sausage rolls and pastries! Will have to come back and try their sour dough bread.

Known by the local Melbourne community for over four decades, Natural Tucker's sourdough has really come into it's own. This institution still makes the oh-so-famous list of loaves and now has also successfully taken on the sweet dessert pastries and also into vegan treats. We're always welcomed with a generous smile and the coffee machine is always ready for a caffeine hit, however we take it. I hear they're spreading their wings now too. Yummy baked goods are in Kooyong with 'The Purple Fig' and now ready to open into Thornbury with 'The Billycart'. Best wishes Natural Tucker Team. Love your work!!

No kidding, every products they sell are all just AMAZING! They have plenty of choices and vegan friendly! Pies are so DELICIOUS and it doesn't upset my tummy (my tummy is quite sensitive with pies/sausage rolls)! You can taste the real butter they use in the pastries! You gotta come and try it yourself as there's no time to read any more reviews on Google before they sell out! 👍🍞😍

Omg, their sourdough bread is amazing, it's the best I have ever had. Must try their sourdough .

The best bakery in the north alongside Loafer. I visit almost every week to pick up a spelt loaf and if I can't resist, some pastries. The best thing is they can slice the loaves :)

I know my breads. When it comes to sourdoughs, Natural Ticker in Carlton cannot be beaten. Put your own sweetness or saltiness on a slice of this fair dinkum tucker. And they slice it for you as well!. Grab the pastries for when you go visiting or have visitors over. It's a living north of the Yarra highlight. It's the staff of life!

3.5/5
I've been here a couple of times. The service is always friendly and efficient especially in these uncertain times.

I had some rye bread or Norwegian bread I believe it was called which was great. It was fresh and it lasted for days.

My lamb pie wasnt too good, the filling was light on, the lamb pieces chewy and the base was realpy thick and gluggy.

Another time I had a croissant which tasted like it was a day old, as it didn't taste fresh at all which was disappointing.

I'd go back for the bread.

My favourite bakery, I go here every week. The tarts are sooo sooo sooo good! The bread is great - too the point where my mother requests 3 loaves a week to be delivered (by yours truly) in Albert Park because she loves it so much. The girls behind the counter are the friendliest staff, I have never gone in there and not been complimented! Love natural tucker.

Pretty disappointed that they stopped promoting their vegan stuff, I wouldn't imagine they would stop promoting things if they were gluten free.

Embarrassed to have vegan stuff? Just want to make more money by not promoting it to simple minds?

Regardless it has put me off and other vegans I know off from going there.
You had something no one else on this street provided and stopped promoting it.
Weird choice.

Very sad that the quality at this Melbourne institution has gone down so considerably. The Natural Tucker bread we knew and loved has disappeared to be replaced with a doughy airy loaf you could buy for half the price at Coles. Even the pastry on the pies seems to have changed. Not sure what they are doing now, or why they not following the original recipe, but I hope that they will return to what makes this bakery unique and why we all love it.

We have been buying the Natural Tucker Casalinga Sourdough loaf for over 20 years and have loved it and recommended it to anyone who would listen. The bread was heavy, moist, thick and sour doughy. Nothing else like it. Unfortunately, and sadly for us, the last few loaves we have bought have been just like any other soughdough. We've found a distinct change in the bread. It's light and full of holes. It's not the same and not for the better. It tastes like any other soughdough. We heard that the baker has passed away, and that new people are making the bread. There is no point of differentiation anymore. Like I said, it's just like any other soughdough. Burns easily, light and not much flavour. It would be wonderful to know that someone from the Bakery read this and took our feedback seriously. If we buy any more loaves like the last two, I'm going to ask our supplier to recommend a bread that is similar to the old Natural Tucker Casalinga loaf. I hope this wont be the case.

We used to come here about 20 years ago and absolutely loved it. Been recently travelling past on the tram and thought I would try it again. Grabbed the wife and headed down (we live about 1/2 hour away). Seems to have changed a fair bit. The staff that served us were okay, but not as invested as they used to be. Ordered lunch and ate in. We then ordered some bread (Sage and Onion) to take away, having already planned our dinner. Unfortunately the lady that took our bread order was so pre-occupied with whether we had paid for our lunch or not that she gave us the wrong bread. Got some weird potato thingamabob. The only time potatoes and bread should be seen together is in an Aloo Paratha. My wife was looking forward to the sage and onion which would have matched our food so was quite disappointed when we sliced into the wrong loaf. The place just didn't have the same vibe as it did in "the good old days".

Once the best bakery in Melbourne with their ostensive heritage listed oven.
Now they use a conventional oven and their casalinga is still Melbourne's best but they haven't done much to spruce up their coffee area.

I absolutely love the plain and date scones from here. They're cheap and a generous size, and so, so tasty. The texture is fantastic - so fluffy and light! They're yummy as is, but are incredibly delicious served warm.

Grease is the word ...... Danny & Sandy (GREASE) would like this place ;-)

Well, it's Saturday morning, don't want a big breakfast so I was looking for some Take Away Croissants to go with my Soy Latte and some to take home.

Come across this sign "Natural Tucker" can't go wrong ..... What we have was Croissants that is full of grease, why?

Vegan food is NOT represented well here.

Grew up just around the corner from here. Been getting bread here for years and I used to love the bread but couldn't go past the sourdough croissants, but since the change of hands, plummeted downhill. Service is terrible, the products have changed in taste and size, just really really disappointing for such an establishment!

Love the vegan energy bar from Natural Tucker! It's not only good for you but also absolutely delicious! Great range of options for those of all dietary requirements!

I wouldn't spend my money here simply because of the rude pig that answered the phone this morning. I asked if they were open on Saturday 26 for Australia Day. He barked NO before slamming down the phone. Disgusting.

My favourite place for sour dough bread. Love the casalinga! The soup of the day is usually yummy too.

Humble bakery full of heart. I have been to NTB twice now and have had a great experience both times - so glad it is providing vegan food on Nicholson Street! For a place with such an impressive and interesting history, the bakery remains incredibly unpretentious and sticks to doing what it does best: good sourdough and baked products with an emphasis on health and quality. The food is fresh, wholesome and leaves you feeling nourished and satisfied. The curry pie (lentils and veg in a wholemeal sourdough? pastry) is delicious and affordable. The vegan vegie burger (pre prepared in roll with sprouts, avocado, relish and assorted other salad bits) is gorgeous, filling and a steal at eight dollars! Nothing like a big hearty vegie-infused hit from the Natural Tucker Bakery!

I am no Vegan, not even close. However, I was lucky enough to come across their Vegan Slice at an Organic Grocer probably about 6 months ago... YUM! Very tasty and extremely satisfying!! One of my clients has also bragged about their Vegan Slice & bread. I was also speaking to another client about them today (that's what urged me to come on here & write a review) he was saying that he regularly buys their bread! I certainly look forward to having lunch there soon :) It's a winner!!

The Bread. The Muffins.. The Muffins: Vegan Sugar Free Muffins that taste better than 'real' ones...I'm not a vegan..the Coconut and apricot and the poppyseed and mandarin both had me coming back again and again. The Bread: Cornbread is to die for, sprouted grain is very special too, they also do a mean rye..

Brilliant Sourdough. Natural Tucker has a number of things I love. In the mornings they make savoury focaccias - round focacias with melted cheese and spanish onion that cost about $3. If you get a fresh one about 10am they are perfect. They also make a great selection of different sourdough loaves every day. If you want one on a saturday get there early. The other thing I love are their muffins: huge, dense, heavy, delicious.

Good one.. Natural Tucker is a saving grace for a fresh healthy lunch in a part of Nicholson St that is very lacking in decnt food. Also the staff are really friendly. Thanks guys.
