Review Leonardos Pizza Palace - Melbourne

Great spot, great service and great food! Love Leonardo’s. They are currently running a limited menu till the kitchen is back up fully operational, but it’s still fantastic food and a warm vibe. We tried a few of the small dishes which were great and the salami pizza pie was amazing!

So happy that Leonardo’s is serving up lockdown goodness on Saturday & Sundays. Highly recommend getting there earlier (and hungry) and trying as many items as you can. Great portions and so satisfying. I almost went back for seconds on the cheese curds. Love that there are some rotating weekend options (check their insta!) and we’ll be back soon to try more.

Really one of my favourite sit down pizza places in Melbourne. The vibe was cozy and pizzas came out quickly. Meat lovers and mushroom pizzas were a stand out. Didn’t get a chance to try the jalapeño but that’s more reason to go back. Update: unfortunately they’re not serving pies anymore and just the grandma pies. For another spot, try Sunnyside Sliced!

Chilled staff, good covid safe setup. Panuozzo was just alright...Expected it to be hot out of the oven but the dough and meatballs were lukewarm. Not super cheesey inside either, just kind of like a couple of warm meatballs with parmesan in a wrap. Definitely looks way better on instagram but on the upside the venison meatballs were quite flavourful and there is a good amount of them inside.

It’s like walking into a tavern. Good vibes and the pizza options they offer are different 👌🏼 The mozzarella stick had the satisfying cheese pull served with marinara sauce. It was so good! We ordered the mussels pasta which had a 🫑 flavour to its sauce. We also ordered the meat lovers pizza and it was delicious. A little but of everything. Instead of the BBQ sauce they use tomato. I really enjoyed the service and the food. We didn’t feel thirsty afterwards. Definitely recommend making a booking either online on their website or calling up. I would definitely be coming here again and will bring friends to

Gorgeous atmosphere and some of the best pizzas I've had in a while! Or group had jalapeno, salami, anchovy and mortadella and they were all excellent. We had heaps left over they're about a family size. Definitely will be back!

Great pizza place! Delicious pizza, amazing entrés, fantastic cocktails. The vibe is spot on, very comfortable and welcoming. Top notch staff with speedy, friendly service. Definitely come on in for a tasty good time.

Went there recently. The Jalapeño pizza was delicious and pretty to look at too. Has a great vibe. The Polenta chip was small but tasty. We will be back as my family and I loved the Pizza's here.

3.5. The pizzas were good overall. The fennel and sausage was tasty, especially with the cheese and the herbs. However, the pepperoni had less kick than I’m used to and less flavour overall. Pizzas were huge, but pricier than most.

Cozy hipster bar on Carlton serving Italian dishes which focused on pizzas. Plenty of seats inside and some outside. The pepperoni pizza is generous in toppings coupled with soft base and chewy cheese. Great place to hang out but hard to find parking

This place makes absolutely beautiful pizza. We ordered pizza with pork & fennel sausage and it was perfection. The mushroom spaghetti was also a highlight. Staffs were lovely, they were super friendly & helpful. Great music played in the background. We had a wonderful dining experience here and will come back again.

So this was an unexpected surprise. Little treasure off lygon st. The neon lighting of the restaurant name was attractive driving towards to it, unfortunately though walking in wasn’t so pleasant. Odd music and Indy vibe, which was okay, but the service wasn’t great to begin with. It picked up once seated in the beautiful intimate side dining area though, which was good. Service became prompt and pleasant. Pizza is 10/10, I usually don’t like many pizza places but this was outstanding. I’ll be back and definitely recommend!

Amazing wood fire pizza, staff were super attentive and friendly. You have the option to choose split the toppings so you can try more. Pizza base was thin and not too heavy either

It was kind of bad...

Venue had music so loud I felt kind of awkward almost having to shout at the wait staff to tell them what I wanted. That being said, decor and atmosphere was on point but definitely not my cup of tea.

Food is the major contributing factor to the low score here. For two pizzas I waited with my girlfriend for 5 minutes shy of an hour. The taste was quite nice. We had a meat lovers and a Sicilian, both were great, had distinct flavours that sets them apart form other pizza places. The pizza was also mega dry but I quite like that sort of texture.

Anyway, can't say I'd recommend this place 100%. It's not a place for quick eats, cheap eats but I imagine if you're looking for a first date location with a trendy groove and nice beats and safely yummy pizzas then sure why not.

The décor was vintage, full of character and not unlike the inside of a tavern. This cosy ‘palace’ is a place to drink and dine. The casual atmosphere makes you want to hang out with mates, tuck in to some pizza and settle in for some bevvies. Leonardo's Pizza Palace - Orange wine

Well this was a wild ride! I called up around 6:30 asking if there was any space for 4 people, the lady on the phone let me know there was no space in the main dining area but “heaps of room” in the lounge and bar area. Around 7pm we arrived and walked in, another lady approached us to let us know it’ll be a 25 minute wait for a table. Just as someone who manages a restaurant myself, you should not tell the customer on the phone there is “heaps of space”, always acknowledge the possibility that these tables will be full even within half an hour. I was clearly under the impression there was heaps of seating. Regardless After 20 minutes we got our table. When we sat down I realised every group of four had 2 tea tables and our table of four had 1 tea table....totally understandable, if there wasn’t a spare table right next to us that they gave to other customers. Yes I do understand you want to fill your seats and give everyone a table, however squeezing a family of 4 on a table of two is probably not the smartest way to go about it.
When I sat down I saw people wandering around looking for someone to seat them, people walking around looking where to pay, also noticed people waiting for food for over 25 minutes......It just seemed extremely messy!
Haha and oh god when we got our food, it was so awkward to eat in our space, great pizza! But damn, we had our side plates on our lap!
I got my salad which had cheese on it and it never stated that on the menu, I also can’t have cheese... sure probably my fault for not letting them know but also their fault for not putting all the ingredients on the menu.
Then my partners mozzarella sticks never arrived.....
the lady who was serving us at our table was really lovely but the manager seemed to pass everything with a blind eye. It really really really looked like she was trying to avoid any form of issue or acknowledge any form of problems, with employees and customers! Such a shame, heard amazing stuff about Leo’s! But I guess my experience differs

Definitely worth the wait! My friend and I have tried to come here previously but didn’t realise what a buzz the place had. We were too hungry to wait last time. We were smart this time and booked. Loved the gorgeous frames on the walls. Cheese pizza reminded me of New York. I’ll be back.

Housed in the old Pizza By The Metre restaurant and upon entering we though wow nothing has changed with most of the wall decorations, pictures and light fittings looking so original... perhaps they are. We ordered three pizzas to share and a few drinks. It was a cold night, not overly busy as we were seated just in side the entrance but it was nice and warm inside. The service I have to say was below average starting with the greeter, be polite and act is if you like coming to work. After we ordered the drinks, they arrived fairly quickly but just over an hour for our pizzas to arrive! Not good enough. The pizzas were OK, average and nothing to make you feel wow. The table seating was terrible, three of us were seated with a small round table trying to balance our bottles, cans, glasses and three pizzas, again not good enough. Then when asking to pay, I was told to go to the bar to pay where I had to wait for people getting drinks, seriously? It is a local for us, but not one that I would rush back to.

Good vibe and fun for dinner with friends but I won’t be returning for the food. Food was pretty average. Pasta was terrible. Rude waitress as well!

The gluten free pizza here is very disappointing. The thin base was over cooked with a cardboard texture that ruined the whole pizza. The topping options are interesting but the combination on the veggie just misses the mark, maybe its the macadamia crema that just left this pizza feeling less like a pizza and more like somewhat stale bread with toppings. My friend had the meatlovers (not gluten free) and thought it was great. The service was very friendly and knowledgable about their wine list, wine was great and the place has a cool grungy vibe going for it - just wish my pizza had been tastier and this place could be a winner.

Been to Leonardo's a few times pizza is pretty good , but last time our pepperoni pizza was undercooked didn't have the crunch you expect and no real colouring on the crust so some consistency issues coming out of the kitchen but will give it another go

The pizza was ok, it came with a white sauce to eat the crisp of the pizza and that sauce is so damn tasty. We ordered a pasta to share. The sauce of the pasta is good but the pasta was uncooked. A little bit disappointed with the meal, but the drinks were good

This place was so kewl that one of the waitresses was wearing a boiler suit (which looked fab). The cosy booths, wood paneling and stained glass makes you feel like you're in a black and white film but the food definitely measures up to today's palate. We got a delicious vegetarian pizza with a good crust and good chew, and two salads - the broccolini was so cheesy it was probably more a cheese dish than a salad, which I, cheese lover, appreciated. There was a small but excellently curated selection of tap beers and I chose the house lager which was well-priced and flavorsome. They also had an intriguing list of cocktails and an orange wine which I had never heard of but the waitress assured me it was a solid gamble - and she was right. Its the sort of place where you could drop in for several beers and share a pizza later on, OR book it in for a more formal, dinner party affair - a versatility that I feel is missing in Melbourne's bars/eateries! Definitely will be coming back to try some pasta and cocktails and to further enjoy the aesthetic party of Leonardo's decor.

Wish I had known that there was outdoor seating as then we could have taken Peggy PuffyPants. We shared a half n half: jalapeño pizza with anchovy/roasted capsicum/ capers. Such a great pizza. They’re slightly bigger than you’re average pizza. The crust is thin but with just enough chew. The sauce was succulent, particularly with the roasted capsicum; it gave the sauce richness and viscosity. A huge amount of fresh jalapeño graced the other half and while it was spicy, it was doable. And I’m always asking for salt but not this time as it was perfectly seasoned. It would be nice to have some Italian soft drinks such as Chinotto but sugar free coke still did the trick. On the down side, the wait staff person was not very engaged. It would also be nice if there was a designated front of house person or floor manager who is in charge of “meet and greet” and particularly for “goodbye & did you enjoy your meal?” - a minor quibble. However, the pizza rivals any pizza here in Melbourne or even New York. We were very, very impressed. The only thing missing is that fantastic American attitude to service.

We came back with Peggy. The pizza was just as good as the first time. Outdoors is nice. Communal seating. Can’t beat that pizza. Excellent!

I had lunch today at Leonardo's (my first visit here). I ordered their Ham & Pineapple Pizza with house cheese blend for $23.00, the pizza was excellent and full of flavour & was served steaming hot within 10 minutes of ordering. Laura, the manager was excellent - very friendly and helpful. The décor was of numerous medium sized old paintings & the eatery had a real ambience although the lively music was a little loud to easily speak over. This eatery seats around 100 customers. My only real criticism is that they should consider entrée size meals to better cater for not so big eaters & children (currently only a large size pizza is available).

The Juror's Verdict: Food 4.5/5, Service Provision 4.75/5, Will I return: Probably

Phill Jury (food critic & writer)

Checked out this place recently and definitely recommend. Similar vibe to Leonard’s in south yarra with the food being of the same high quality. Looking forward to trying out the rest of the menu.

Leonardo’s Pizza Palace Carlton is the latest venue from the team behind Leonard’s House of Love. It sees the former La Cacciatore and Da Salvatore Pizza By the Metre space, which opened in 1959, transformed into something more modern with a retro vibe.

We were so keen to check out Leonardo’s because Leonard’s is our favourite place to frequent in Melbourne. We had a long wait for a table of 7 on a Wednesday night which is a given for a popular new restaurant. When we got in they had nearly run out of pizza dough but were honest and offered us the last 10 pizzas. Service was amazing as always, fit out was very Leonard’s-esque and cool. Drinks were great. The jalapeño and pepperoni pizza were standout and would order just those two next time. The bolognese was very rich and the vego needs work. Sides were all great except the pumpkin salad. We will be back to try the schnitzel once the kinks are ironed out. Well done boys

Pizza was ok, but I'm sure it will keep improving in the future and it's just the start. The Ramblr Bolognase flavour I tried was eatable but a bit overly salted for me - also, the base had been cooked at a high heat quickly and mine was still soggy, solid and under cooked in some middle sections but I still ate it. I found the base to be overly heavy, and more solid than other pizza restaurants I enjoy - it might have been just because it was at night..because I have not tried it through the day to see if it's any different. I think if the base was lighter and more evenly risen it would be a more tasty pizza.

The staff seem to match the bar and restaurant well, and you could probably imagine them going to a place like this even if they weren't working there. Everybody was quite welcoming and individual. Another positive, is they are open quite late and you can go anytime. They also have a reasonable selection of beers, wine and drinks - including a beer cocktail (flavoured beer). Another positive is the selection of areas where you can enjoy sitting at the bar with company or in one of the quieter areas where you can grab some food and not be bothered after a long day.

One addition I would be happy to see on the menu is a capricciosa pizza or something similar.

Great place to go with friends. Went after work for some of the pizzas. Enjoyed the bolognese from their sister restaurant and you already know I had to try the pizza version. Highly recommend!

Ok went here last night
The pizza was great but I ordered a Caesar salad and it was supposed to come with croutons pancetta and Parmesan. What I got was a couple of cos lettuce leaves with some dressing! Seriously why so tight on the ingredients? Can’t stand restaurants that are tight like that!
