Review Hello Gello - Melbourne

We bought 5x flavours a couple of days ago and they are all sooo delicious. I may even go as far as to say its the best gelato we've ever had? The owner is also so friendly and such a lovely man. A yarraville must do!

Their chocolate flavours are the best. Their mud cake veis my favorite. Additionally the man running the place is the nicest person I have talked to running a store. I will recommend the place anytime.

Stopping here for an icecream on hot day last week was a good decision. The 5$ cone that got with mudcake flavour was the best way to cool off when in Yarraville. If I come by Yarraville again I will drop by and get a cone again.

Ice cream was delicious, staff was friendly. I got a 2 scoop ice cream for $7 and the second scoop was about half the size of the first one though which was pretty disappointing

Try the Green Tea ice cream! Absolutely delicious and made on site.

Oh my god! Tried three flavours tonight and all were soooo delicious!

Friendly service and the best sized/tasting milkshake I’ve had in a long while. This is what a gelato shop should be 11/10.

Great ice cream, good flavours and generous portions!

Home made gelato in Yarraville. I really enjoyed the Turkish Delight ice cream which was made using rose water and was very refreshing on a hot day. The cheesecake flavour was also very nice too. The owner is great, and took time to explain what ingredients he used to make the Turkish Delight and Death by Chocolate flavours. I couldn’t believe how much was in the chocolate ice cream flavour, definitely a chocolate lovers dream so highly recommend that flavour if you like chocolate.

Really nice sorbet, with some awesome bespoke flavours (I recommend the blood orange when it's up), however at best you get four flavours and you're not guaranteed to have your go to flavour all the time.

Just a short stroll away from the art deco marvel of Yarraville’s Sun Theatre is a modest little gelateria, Hello Gelo.

No flashy designer fitout. A couple of seats outside on the footpath, a few more inside. A wall festooned with posters for upcoming gigs. Lots of bright orange.

And the gelato? All made on-site, and the flavours we sampled were excellent (special mention for the caramelised fig). Around 20 flavours that change regularly, with both dairy and non-dairy options. Generous servings, great value for money, and super friendly service. The menu also includes slushies, shakes and even spiders (now that’s an old-fashioned treat you don’t see everyday).

Awesome ice cream, wish they had more flavours as they are all so good!
Good service and value right in the village, great for after dinner.
Will be back again and again for sure.

The ice cream place in the village. Without the competition, a location in the city would face. It would very simple to cut back on quality, as options are limited in the village for something cooling in the heat and to maximise profits. Not so here, full flavours come out, as only small batches are produced. The strawberry and blood orange sorbets are winners for me. Although that is just my taste. Choices are fairly standard fare with few experiments. Charming character treat. Opening hours are casual. Open only when weather permits a cooling refreshment.

The Peanut Butter flavour is simply the best of the bunch. Big scoops too! Sometime I also get a takeaway milkshake which is also good and not bad at $5.50.

UPDATE - 11/02/2017

I think it's about time I update my review. It's no secret that I'm addicted to ice cream/gelato/soft serve. There are tons of ice-creamery or gelato joints in Melbourne but I never fail to return to Hello Gelo at least once a week. Why? Firstly and most importantly, the service is exceptional. Scott is the friendliest guy ever, and he is ever so patient with customers standing there for a good 5 minutes trying to decide what flavours to order and also super sweet to bratty kids who scream loudly and impatiently for ice cream. The latter alone deserves a knighthood. Not only is Scott an all-around nice guy, he personally makes all the ice cream from scratch. I have seen him carrying around huge boxes of bananas, strawberries and a medley of other fruits to be churned into yummilicious ice cream. You are assured of freshness and quality here. Moving on to the flavours and texture. The flavours are all on point, and sweetness is just right. Texture-wise, it's the pinnacle of how ice cream should be - silky smooth and wonderfully creamy. To keep things interesting, there are seasonal flavours and also special flavours to coincide with holidays - taro, nectarine, pumpkin pie, pineapple, lychee, "s"lime splice, gingerbread, Christmas pudding, strawberry pavlova, and the list goes on. There's really nothing that's not done right here. Even the thickshakes are flawless - thick, creamy and very generous with the amount of ice cream blended in. What started as a simple search on Google for some Asian flavoured ice cream led me to Hello Gelo and subsequently into a full-blown addiction and a weekly "visit" to Scott. Who would have thought that I would achieved my simple childhood dream of being friends with the "ice cream man"?

-----------------------------------------------------
09/06/2015

Peanut butter/salted caramel and coconut pandan. So so good. Generous serving size and awesome service. My weekly after dinner ritual. I would live there if I could.

It's been a while since I wrote about Asian-influenced desserts but here it is in the new Horse year. I have been to Hello Gelo many many times but have never taken a single photo!! Too busy choosing flavours, chatting and eating it all before it melts! Some of my favourite flavours here include chocolate orange, vanilla, lychee sorbet, coconut with mango swirl, and lemon sorbet. Real made on premises gelato with real ingredients. Winner!

50/50. I quite liked the Peanut Butter flavour but not so much the Salted Caramel. Ok to try if you're in the area but wouldn't go out of my way!

Delicious ice-cream and great for those with food allergies. I love Hello Gelo. The ice-ceam is delicious, there are a lot of flavours, the servings are generous, it's reasonably priced and the service is really friendly and helpful. I'm a Coeliac (gluten free) and the owner is knowledgeable about the ingredients in every flavour and he's always happy to go through them with me.

Slushies + friendly place!. Although they only had one sobert option, there were three slushies flavours available for those you can't have dairy.

The man that served us was really nice and friendly!

#supportthelocals

This is my favourite gelato in Melbourne. I've eaten ice cream and gelato at literally scores of places in multiple countries on three continents. I pay a lot of attention to elements such as the density of the mix, the subtlety of flavours, yada yada. So when I say Hello Gelo's gelato is amongst the best I've had anywhere in the world, it's an opinion that comes from a broad base of experience. This bloke is not Berthillon on Ile St. Louis in Paris -- for my money, the most intensely-flavoured ice cream on the planet -- but he's the tops I've had in Australia.

What great flavour combinations he has! I like "busy" ice cream with chunky stuff in it, which is why I went for the chocolate/cashew/ginger Steve had on offer the day I was there. It had rich chocolate flavour, with unobtrusive heat from the ginger throughout, and big pieces of candied ginger and cashews to put a chewy/crunchy vibe on the mouth feel. My X used to make a great version of salted caramel gelato at home, with chopped Skor bars thrown in as a topper. Better than any other salted caramel I've had. Steve's is almost as good, with swirls of soft, gooey caramel blended evenly through the pate, and not so much salt as to dominate the taste. I can see why he always has it in the display case.

I rarely go back to the same place twice. My thought is "Why repeat myself when there are a million other eateries I haven't tried yet?" But I'll be returning to Hello Gelo. It's THAT good. Srsly, if Dolce Freddo, Fritz, 7 Apples and Hello Gelo were lined up next to each other and some Higher Power said "You can have a cone from just one of these places" it would be this joint that'd I'd choose.

Made with love. I love this place. We often go here with our small children and take our gelato to the Simpson St playground that you can get to by ducking down Lois Lane a couple of doors up from Hello Gelo.

I have loved just about every flavour I've ever eaten here. You can taste as many as you like. The owner is a lovely guy who seems to love creating new flavours for his customers to try. But don't overlook the sorbets hidden off in the freezer to the side. They are really incredible.

Best smoothie i ever had!

Bubblegum yum. Stopped in on Saturday and ordered the Peanut Butter icecream (subtle flavour) and the Bubblegum, which wasn't something I'd normally order but it was so good - took me back to my childhood.

After a long hot day of biking there's nothing better than a nice cold ice-cream and they don't get much better than Hello Gelo. Tonnes of flavours to choose from including a great selection of gelato. Prices might be a little dearer if you buy by the tub but hey it's well worth it.

Chocolate and Pistachio Gelato. Best pistachio outside Europe

DELICIOUS! Perhaps the greatest thing about hello gelo is the fact that they give a decent amount of ice-cream and don't charge the earth. Pistachio and chocolate are my two favourite flavors!

Turkish Delight was heavenly and Peanut Butter is something to behold. Highly recommended!!

The icecream here is handmade, very creamy and ranges from the classics to curiosities such as chestnut (made with real chestnut puree and marron glace pieces) and pear & Pernod. A kids' cone, which is ample even for an adult, is a mere $2.50 or $3 for two flavours. Take-home packs may be made up, too.
