Review Ela-re - Melbourne

Ordered a big plate to share between myself and toddler and it was huge! The meat was tender and the chips are nice and crunchy. The only thing I would prefer is more salady things... it’s only got 6 slices of tomatoes and some onions

According to my Greek friend, it's not super authentic. However taste super good. One thing definately disappointed here is way Too much cucumber in the Greek salad on the platter. But everything else were so nice. Housemade Tartzipky was AMAZING! I am a cucumber hater with very sensitive nose, Oh my lord. I didn't smell any disgusting cucumber smell. There will be no people to hate this sauce even though you are cucumber hater Unless you are an allergic to garlic.(my Greek friend also cucumber hater but he loved this sauce) Quite big plate and reasonable price for Greek food. Somehow Hard to find a good Greek food in Melbourne .. Will definitely visit again. Wanna try souvlaki there.

I read a few of the reviews and a few of them were around uber eats, which as a rule I disregard given the time your food sits in a strangers can. Sadly however I did go and eat here and wouldn't recommend. I'm a massive gyros fan but I think what these guys are serving probably can't really be called Greek food.. In saying that the chips were actually pretty good! There are a lot better Greek places around and I would suggest giving this one a miss.

I've had to pay more for this kind of quality and quantity elsewhere. It's tailored towards delivery given how small the eat in arrangement is. It's getting 4 out of 5 because they always seem to leave my tomato in when I ask for no tomato. This used to happen when I ordered through Uber Eats as well. The food is however great.

excellent food and service nice coffee good price's

Ordered two gyro's, a soft drink and some chips on uber eats. When it arrived one of the gyros was missing. After trying to overcome this disappointment, I bit into the one soggy, sad looking gryo that did arrive and it was the most disgusting thing I've ever put in my mouth. Honestly just rifling through a dumpster and eating the first random thing I found would've been preferable, provided of course it wasn't the gyro I just threw in there. Chips and soft drink were okay.

Ordered through Uber eats, worst souvlaki i've ever had. The lamb wasn't edible, there was no sauce and the whole thing was quite small. The bread didn't taste good either. Poor. Rather would have paid more and got it from Stala.

Kebabs are OK for taste and quality, averaged sized for the price, but be wary - when it says "beer battered fries" that doesn't mean the kebab comes with sides - it means the kebab has 3 or 4 individual fries rolled up in it, as space filler. Is that worth it for you? You be the judge.

If this was proper greek it would be cooked on charcoal. All I got was over priced Doner (turkish version of souva) next time I will just go to the local kebab shop. HSP was completely covered in nasty bbq sauce and full of chips. The little bit of chicken in there was dry and inedible. Extremely disappointed. I feel ripped off to be honest.

3.5/5 - our first visit was awesome! Chicken, lamb and green salad with a tub of tzatziki. Yum. Being Greek I love my Greek food. It was great the first time. <br/><br/>Next time.... salt city. I can’t believe how salty the meat was on the Effie’s Health Kick.. the lamb was burned and inedible. <br/><br/>I think if it was consistent it’s a 5/5 but the tzatziki with the chicken is heavenly when it was done right!

On my first visit, this place left such a great impression that I couldn't wait to come back. I had the lamb gyros and it was very tasty and tender. Okay maybe a bit too salty but i loved it. On the second visit however things went a bit south. The meat were more burnt and tough, it still tasted all right but it wasn't as good as I remembered for the fist time. I believe the cook was the same person but the time of day was different. The first one was in an afternoon while the second visit was in the evening. So maybe try to visit early if you are keen to try.
Crabapples For Lunch
The souvlakis here are decent, but not particularly outstanding. The chicken souvlaki contained cuts that had some tendon in it, which I didn't particularly like, but otherwise it was quite good. My wife really likes the strong coffee here.<br/><br/>Decor and ambience was quite modern, and the shop is quite small and cosy. Much of the indoor seating is in the form of taller tables with high chairs, which was not particularly comfortable but not a huge deal.
Ray
Tasty Greek food, not the best but not bad. The portion sizes were a bit small, expected more for the price. The service was ok. Pretty small restaurant but was fairly quiet at lunch so no issues.

Pita Bread - Soft and Fresh, Chicken - Tender and Perfectly Grilled and Flavored<br/>Salads - Fresh<br/>Perfectly Crisp Fries<br/>Delicately flavored Tzatziki<br/>Coffee - top-notch<br/><br/>Describes our experience perfectly.<br/><br/>This is easily one of the best inexpensive restaurant fod Souvlaki and Greek Street Food.

Best souvlaki I have had in a while. This reminded me of when I was in Greece. Packed full of meat and chips just the way it is in Greece. I would definitely recommend and will definitely be ordering again

Really happy with my experience here. My lamb gyro was absolutely delicious, plenty of meat which was tasty and tender and really loved the softness of the wrap. Asked for the chips to be served on the side instead of in the gyro and they gave me many more than what would have been in there- it's little things like that that keep customers coming back! My only gripe is that I would have liked some more salad in my wrap to balance the heaviness of all the meat- I don't know if this is traditional and in any case I'm sure they would be happy to add more to my taste.

We had Deliveroo takeaway, not expecting much but to be honest it’s pretty good. Their hsp mixed meat was delish and tender, my healthy pack with mixed meat and Greek salad was very fresh too.<br/><br/>I wanna actually go there and dine in next time!

Great coffee, really nice food, great service. Different menu items. All you want really. Good way to celebrate Australia Day. I am sure I’ll be back for a regular breakfast.

I can’t believe we kept holding off to try this place out and we finally did and we’re glad that we did! <br/>We ordered the Thia Voula gyro, each ingredient was perfectly portioned. Fresh and flavourful! No oil running down your hands. Great value for money the gyros.<br/>We then ordered the Yiayia’s big dish. Very tasty, chips were hot and crunchy. Tzatziki was fresh. No crappy tomatoes parts here. I love onion but way too many onions and chips, not enough meat for a price like that. We ordered the mixed meat with chicken and lamb. We enjoyed the chicken more than the lamb. Lamb was much juicer but more obvious fatty parts. <br/>Staff were inviting and attentive. <br/>I’m shocked to see that they only have a small area for dining in and that there is no loukoumades! However, definitely returning. <br/>Take your lover, friends and family here for delicious Greek cuisines. <br/>Jim Michael Siamsiaras

Came to South Melbourne Market today and saw this little cafe was offering free coffee. We had a flat white and a mocha. Quite decent coffee for something that was free. We like free stuff 😅

This is one of those places that you could easily walk past without a second glance. It's in a busy area right opposite the South Melbourne Market. With all the bustle, and all the good food choices around here, well as I said it would be easy not to notice this little Greek Kebab shop.<br/><br/>But if you're reading this please take notice. This place is something more than just a kebab shop. Why? Because it is by far the best kebab I have had in Melbourne hands down. I don't say it lightly either, I have a friend who owned a Kebab shop and they will kill me for this review...<br/><br/>So I repeat. The best Kebab shop I have ever been to, hands down!!! All you need to do to is give it a try, you will find out why.
Douzzzz
Easily the best feed in the area at that price point! Staff are always awesome, will spend many more Sunday's here with the boys, more of a gyros than a souvlaki
James Potter
Beware- Salmonella kitchen.<br/>Enter at own risk.<br/>Soggy chips in souva. <br/>Plenty of options around the area.<br/>I will not be visiting here ever again.
RRJosh
Super yum lamb gyros! We got home delivery and they were fresh, hot and tasty. We have struggled to find a decent place in the area for gyros so are rapt to know this place. Definitely will get them again 👍🏽

I rather enjoyed my little handful of Greece in a recent gyro from Ela-Re, located a skip along from the South Melbourne Market. Fast and friendly service meant my Pappou Kosta (lamb, tzatziki, onion, tomato and chips) was in my hands in no time. It didn’t Kosta lot either, at only $8.90 and all the other souvlaki options bubbling around the ten dollar mark. The menu’s quite diverse for a place of this size, with skewers, salad options and desserts as well. No doubt there’s a bit of a market for food in this area (excuse the pun) but the offering holds up well at Ela-Re.

I have been hounded by work colleagues on a regular basis to try out Ela Re, which I did today. Because of its glowing reviews from colleagues and its burgeoning popularity, maybe my expectations were too high, and thus I felt slightly under-whelmed.<br/><br/>Let's start with the positives - Ela Re is very presentable and the staff very friendly and accommodating. I ordered the Chicken Gyro and a side order of chips. Let me just say, the chips are outstanding! Perfectly cooked, crispy on the outside, fluffy in the middle, and delicately seasoned with a house blend - delicious.<br/><br/>Unfortunately for Ela Re, the gyro let them down. I know I should probably have stuck with a more 'traditional' lamb option, but I opted for the chicken. The pita itself was lovely, but lacked in the filling. The chicken really let the side down; dry, chewy and gristly meant I ended up opening the pita to pick out the remaining chicken. The salad component was minimal too, while the addition of chips was to the gyro was welcomed.<br/><br/>In all, disappointed, but not all is lost. There were enough positives for me to probably go back to give them another chance (though will probably opt for lamb next time!).

Had a lamb souvlaki. A bit of the Mediterranean spirit with chips inside. I kid thee not - probably the best lamb souvlaki I've ever had.<br/><br/>The lamb was beautiful, the chips were seasoned (and I think herbed), they use tehini, which I loved the tartness of. All in all, delicious.<br/><br/>Also priced very reasonably and reasonably efficient service.<br/><br/>Will be back.

Seriously the best Greek Food I have ever had! So authentic, extremely fresh and delicious! Highly recommend!!!!! My delivery was sooner than anticipated and everything was still warm!
Voula Boutsikakis
It's the first decent Greek Gyros I've had in Melbourne, I lived in Greece for 26,so I like the traditional. Ordered without the chips and it was just perfect.

Came here with my Daughter, I was dying to try a traditional lamb souvlaki but my daughter being the pain she is, couldn't decided. After asking 100 opinions, the waiter who later introduced himself and was the owner, Costa was lovely enough to arrange a plate of all the things she wanted to try little bits of! Wow, I'm glad she did cause I know I'm coming back for one of everything! From the soft shall crab, to the chicken and pork, to the chips and prawns! Even the salads! Chard meat but still tender and soft, not dry or chewy it literally melted! The seafood was super fresh and the chips were all golden and crunchy! You can really taste the dips and falafel have been hand made with care cause they leave your mouth with a really nice flavour with nothing being too overpowering! <br/>Thank you Ela-Re! We will be back probably sooner then we should😁

Very nice Dishes. Tender and moist Lamb with nice sides. Very courteous service! The chips are crunchy and the salad are fresh...Will return soon.

I love a good gyro and on a sunny Saturday afternoon when you have missed breakfast and it’s nearly past brunch you can do a lot worse than a lovely, hot, succulent and tasty gyro from Ela-Re. Located on Coventry Street, South Melbourne just opposite the bustle of the markets, this little hole in the wall takes me right back to crystal blue seas and endless sandy beaches of the Mediterranean. The menu offers a wide range of traditional Greek street food including gyro, slow cooked on hot charcoal until it is tender and yummy! Choose from Lamb, Chicken or Pork.

Delicious! My local<br/><br/>I'm so glad to have Ela-re as my local. It's delicious, and great for a quick lunch or dinner. Personal faves are the gyros and yaya's big dish. I have recommended to friends who also love it!Being an onion fan, I love the decent pile of pickled onion you get with the big dish, and I always ask for super crunchy fries.<br/>The boys are nice and friendly and it's a cute little set up.<br/>Yes, I've had the souvas from Oakleigh and Stalactites, Ela-re is the best in South Melbourne.

Went here after shopping at the market.wife had chicken souva I had open chicken souva nothing special. So much potential as the location demands for good food but don't understand how you can't get it right with quality produce at your finger tips. Save your money go yo oakleigh and you will find a good souva place

First heard about this place after they became sponsors of South Melbourne FC (SMFC), my favourite sporting team. Was in the area and decided to sit down to have a feed with the family. Great and tasty souvs at a reasonable price. The chips and pita sides also highly tasty. Check it out!

Best souvlaki I've had in Melbourne. Nice and traditional with a clean shop that resembles being in Greece. Love the service and the Thia Voula souvlaki is the best with the ela sauce. Keep it up guys

Ela-re has come to South Melbourne bringing delicious Greek food that you can get delivered or grab a seat in the sun and relax with friendly service and a mouth watering menu packed with gyro, skewers, salads and fries. ‘Pappou Kosta’ Lamb gyro, tzatziki, onion, tomato and the chips inside, super fluffy pita that makes me smile! Chargrilled lamb, plenty of lovely, glistening nuggets with creamy tzatziki = super happy!
Jenny
Amazing salads and skewers for when you're feeling healthy. Service was lovely and the shop is warm and inviting! Even had a cheeky Nutella souvlaki which was delicious. Highly recommend
Shawn
Loved this place, this is a must if you love your Greek food!! I would recommend the chicken souv. Service was fantastic and food came out fast. Great value for money.

Tiny shop next to the market. I enjoyed the lamb gyro. Served with chips, tomato and garlic sauce. <br/><br/>The big dish is a dinner plate enough for one or two small children. <br/><br/>**Update**<br/>Food was served not so fast anymore :(<br/><br/>20 minutes for a lamb gyro.<br/><br/>Well it would help if they didn’t give my order to their friends who ordered 5 minutes after me. <br/><br/>Also lamb was rushed and dry. So disappointed.
Evelyn Trapouzanlis
Was absolutely amazing.. Tastes very similar to a souvlaki you will have in Greece. The pricing is fantastic and the quality of the food is superb. Love how they have named everything on the menu. South Melbourne needed a place like this and is definitely my favourite place to go to when I want something tasty and filling to eat. I recommend this place to everyyyyone.
Katrina Walker
Yummy pita and good souvlaki for a reasonable price. This new local is going to be a regular for us. Dips aren't made on site, but they are good. Eggplant is the best but had sold out last night!
Ang
We were really looking forward to<br/>It having read the reviews but walked away disappointed...the mustard sauce was not the traditional sauce u get in Greece, the lamb was chewy, there was not much meat in the souva's - too much raw onion- not great value for money & better to b had elsewhere. The feta chips were the highlight
Coco
Hands down the best souv that I've had outside of Greece - really traditional and transported me back to being in Santorini. Put's all the other local souv shops to shame with their oily, greasy imitations. And insanely well priced - less than $8 for a souv + chips. Lovely guys working in-store too! I think myself very lucky to work around the corner from here, I am going to be a very regular customer!! :-)
