One of the best roti canai's I have ever tasted made fresh. Also serve dishes on Banaba leaves. Fresh and authentic. Friendly staff. One of those unassuming cheap take out places that are better than a restaurant
This place was a pleasant surprise. The staff are so incredibly nice here! My complaint would be that in a prawn dish, I expect more than 3 prawns. I mean if they were a little less tight in that area, I would be really impressed!.
But here, someone made the conscious effort to wake up early in the morning, find the coconut milk for the rice, deep fry the anchovies and peanuts, source the banana leaves to complete this little packet of nostalgia. In the middle of a food court.
Chow Down provides a good lunch menu in Melbourne CBD, there are Nasi Lemak, Roti, Beef Rendang as these menus are my favourite, after 3 pm they will sell lunch menus as discount price until 5 pm weekdays.
Chow Down is a little Malaysian counter-style place in the Midtown Plaza arcade. The house specialty seems to be the Nasi Lemak; which comes in various combinations with your choice of meat; including beef or chicken Rendang, fried chicken or squid. There are also various noodle dishes and interestingly, a breakfast menu that features Malaysian staples like kaya toast and roti canai. I ordered the Nasi Lemak with Beef Rendang ($10.90). The rendang (which is a slow-cooked spiced curry) was well-cooked, melt-in-your mouth tender texturally and was a generous serve. On the downside, it was a little lacking in kick and spicing; it could do with a more chilli, galangal and lemongrass (I suspect perhaps the toning down catering to the mainstream lunchtime crowd that frequent the complex). The sambal wasn't bad either, but again needed a bit more kick. On the upside, the overall serve was generous, it came with all the usual trimmings of ikan bilis (fried anchovies), coconut and egg and you really can't complain for the price. The owner was also a friendly and effusive personality and was very welcoming. Perhaps another return visit to try the other dishes might be in order to get a better picture.
Had the scoopon voucher purchased online so I've decided to try this little eatery located near to Target and Chinatown area. It serves a decent amount of M'sian food and local delicacies. I tried twice and I had to say the Nasi Lemak was nicer than the stir fry vermicelli. I had the satay chicken and it was alright. The deep fried chicken was nicer but wasn't warm & crispy enough.
Friends of mine commented the freshly cooked char koay teow and fried rice was good. I'd say it's a perfect spot for international students of RMIT and Monash to feast on this little place.
I have yet to try those and other delights one day.
Located at the convenient Bourke Mall where you find quite some eateries, Chow Down serves fast, cheap and tasty food. The Nasi Lemak is well presented and delicious. The size of the meal is just about right. Would recommend giving it try if you are after Malaysian food.
Overall the meal is enjoyable here. The pricing is competitive and the flavour is great (i do prefer it to be more pungent but of course everyone has different palate) I can tell that Vincent, the business owner is trying to establish himself as the store is hard to be discovered unless you know well about the arcade. Just enter from Swanson street into the arcade and you will see them.
Having their grilled chicken with their special fragrance rice. The chicken looked dry but the meat is so tender. The garlic chilli dressing compliments the chicken very well. Will try out their Chicken Rendang next time!
Chow Down in the heart of the CBD draws on owner and passionate chef, Vincent Chow’s Malaysian background to serve up authentic Malaysian hawker food. The cuisine reflects the diversity of its South East Asian roots, drawing influences from Malay, Chinese, Peranakan and Indian cuisine. The service was friendly and prompt with staff that are clearly proud of the food being served up.
Amazing place. Little China in Melbourne. For years I thought this place to be small and insignificant but now that I explored, it's not that small specially for food. This street has amazing Chinese and Japanese restaurants and food. Visit this place, specially at night. Don't forget to book your restaurant before arrive !
Eat until you drop. It's quality, quantity, and super competitive service.
Melbourne's Chinatown is a great place to visit.
