Review The Red Capsicum - Melbourne

Chris Magill
Good, seemingly home cooked food. A decent variety of hot food which changes each day including roast pork, beef and lamb, steamed and roast vegies, pasta and some stir fry options. Fresh veg rolls and sandwiches are also available.

Simple, but honest food served with alacrity. You won't get fine dining at this cafe really designed for local workers in a rush and poor uni students, but you do get prompt service, friendly staff and hearty honest home-cooked inexpensive food. Love the place

Always go there cause of the friendly staff and the great food that is yum and cheap.

Convenient cafe located right across MGSE and nearby the Law Building. They slightly burn my coffee most of the time I go there, but for the cheaper price they were serving it at (especially compared to Stovetop and Porta Via) and the practically zero-queues - I don't really mind. Their selection of muffins and breakfast items were alright. I tried one of the burgers and it tasted strongly of lamb which I did not expect because it was supposed to be a burger.

Good sanger. Basically an unpretentious sandwich bar, with a few hot dishes such as pasta, rice, roast, or casserole-type bakes. The hot dishes I can take or leave, but the sandwiches are very good. They make them to order, although there are a few pre-made sandwiches and wraps if you're in a hurry.

They have a good range of breads, rolls, Lebanese bread, and so on, but what really sets Red Capsicum apart, in my opinion, is its excellent range of ingredients to go in your sandwich. It's a much wider range than you'll find in your average sandwich bar (including its nearest rival, QB's, right next door). The range includes roasted vegetables such as capsicum, pumpkin, eggplant, and zucchini, and several types of roast meats. About the only significant ingredient missing is semi-dried tomatoes. They do have sun-dried tomatoes, but they're no substitute for sem-dried, in my opinion.

Everything is fresh, high-quality, and very tasty. Sandwiches are generously filled, prices are more than reasonable (cheaper than a lot of sandwich bars in the CBD), and service comes with a smile. Recommended for good, fresh, tasty takeaway sandwiches at a very reasonable price.
