Review Heyday Hong Kong Cafe - Melbourne

Preston Parks
Hidden down an alleyway just off little Bourke is a blast to Hong Kong in Melbourne. The vibes inside made me feel like I was in HK. Food was delicious and no frills, which is not a bad thing. Great prices for the quantity of food. I will be making this a regular stop for myself.

Hits the spot for classic Hong Kong style cafe in melbourne. Food is tasty simple and super quick to come out. Don’t expect anything mind blowing but if this is your comfort food then this ticks all boxes.

The owner was friendly and reminding my childhood. I ordered Set A with an HK style Milk Tea $13 what a bring back the memory. I am full for my lunch after 1.5 workout.

HEYDAY HONG KONG CAFE, Chinatown Melbourne. 🇭🇰 HAPPY LOCKDOWN FRIDAY. I really miss this hole in the wall HK Cafe that we checked out well before lockdown and enjoyed our little authentic HK style breakfast - we ordered two breakfast sets (Set A & Set B $13 each back then which both comes with a drink) and an extra naughty Buttered French toast! 🍞😁 . Really reminds us of HK Style Cha Chaan Tengs, (even the service lol) a little hidden gem for your HK food cravings #nofrills . If it’s open after lockdown be sure to visit-

Simply amazing homely and heart warming food. Authentic lifeline for the rice hungry Asian. Cha siew furong egg rice is a must try. Better than all tze char in Singapore

Good Hong Kong style cafe food. Service was very good too. The place is small but we got a table upon entering.

One of the most obsecured and tucked away cafe you could find, that maybe worth it. Hong Kong style comfort food at its best. Simply enjoy eating its pork chop with creamy sauce over rice. Pork was tender and juicy, the creamy sauce was tasty.

The food was very well priced you get a dish and also a drink for only $14.50. I ordered the Hong Kong ice coffee and tea so that was technically two drinks. The chicken wing omelette dish was very average; the chicken wings were too dry, but it was still very filling nonetheless!

Another reto Hong Kong style eatery famous with the locals . A lot of meal selections and specials all year round.

Tried their four season chicken with drink for $14.50 which is quite average for a meal at china town.

This my simple Hong Kong food to go! If you love Asian omelette as much as I do, you should check this place out!! I'd recommend the bacon or chicken omelette on rice! You'll leave this place with a big smile on your tummy!

Best Hong Kong style cafe. All their meals come with a drink. My favourite dishes are:
- Chicken wings with egg on rice (their signature)
- Spaghetti bolognese
- All their sandwiches are really tasty

Service is also fast. Their food makes me want to go back to Hong Kong for sure! And I like their owner, they're very friendly and accomodating.

What a nostalgic feeling to be able to eat here again. We used to eat here a lot during our uni days back then and it’s lovely to know that they have the consistency on their food quality. Although their menu are simple, they are able to bring the best quality of HK comfort food. Our favourites here are the pork chop with mushroom creamy sauce and pork chop with the honey black pepper sauce. As for the drinks, their red bean milk drink is always awesome. The place is quite small so not really suitable for large parties. The staff are somehow very quiet but they are still friendly. Must try this hidden gem when you are in Melbourne.

Very simple traditional Hong Kong style cafe.
Quite popular with those in the know, as the menu is great value and the omelette on rice rivals Rose Garden.
I had quite a simple corned beef and egg sandwich, which was toasted and the egg was cooked fresh and fluffy.
Pop in for your cha chaan tang needs.

❤️definitely give a try the ‘four season chicken cutlet on rice/spaghetti’! it’s a secret special dish that’s not on the printed menu. my all time favorite!

Very cosy little restaurant. As simple as it looks it was really enjoyable to have something that reminds me of HK cafes.

Favourite: lemon iced tea
I haven’t have good lemon iced tea in Melbourne at all. Heyday makes the best iced tea!

Food: 4/5
Service: 4/5
Ambiance: 2/5

Would I recommend Heyday HK Cafe to family and friends? Absolutely!

I love this place so much! i used to come here at least 2-3 times a week back in my uni days, and i just came here again after 1 and a half year. The quality of the food havent changed a bit, it still taste as amazing as it was before, but even better now since now they offer eftpos. I always get the four seasons chicken. Will definitely come here again more often since it reminds me so much of HK

You will miss this little shop if you don't look hard enough. Located away in a little alley, we had a difficult time looking for it, but it was all worth it. We enjoyed their simple creamy pork chop rice. The pork was very tender and the creamy sauce was delicious. Definitely an underrated chinese restaurant in Chinatown.

If you have once been an international student in Melbourne, there’s a high chance that you have been to Heyday. Hidden in a small alleyway in Chinatown, Heyday serves cheap and cheerful HK cafe style meal that was, and still is, as authentic as you can get out of Hong Kong.

Yet please bear in mind that authentic does not necessary equal to amazing. The meals here won’t blow your mind, and most of the dishes are super ordinary. What Heyday peddles to the mass is comfort food in a nostalgic environment (read: tight squeeze and unassuming decor).

What you see is indeed what you get here. The pages of the menu are stuck to the wall - there’s a decent selection of rice and spaghetti dishes, beverages and snacks, and there’s the obligatory set meals that are synonymous to HK cafe. The seat meals are what we always order when my partner and I are here - A for me and D for him. Simple and tasty.

The owner may come across as aloof, but once you get to know him, he is a charmer.

Yum I love their beef in egg sauce and most meals with a drink is around $11.50 which is such great value :) Very small and casual but one of my favourites.

It's very authentic Hong Kong cafe style place. Very cosy and full of Chinatown character in the 2000's. It remain the same character since then. Tucked in the alleyway but still have many students and otaku as regulars. It's a great escape for people who are keen to know how Chinatown was before the invasion of the numerous mainland Chinese restaurant. A place still for the Hong Kong style milk tea, French toast, macaroni Hong Kong way etc. Here is very humble with all the tea set and all the meal comes with drinks. Very laid back, day-dreamable, very Hk, uncompetitive, unpretentious.

Cool laneway HK cafe style restaurant. Very tiny and cosy place don't expect amazing service but the food is very comforting and quite authentic compared to the ones in Hong Kong.

Authentic Hk food reminds of my days living on the Hk island Quary Bay or the Chat Yew Chong.

I miss those days. Heyday brings back those humid feels, the Hong Kong of 2012, the year I may or may not have died. The year everything and nothing seemed possible as I let time pass staring off the bridges into the ever fading motion of the double decker busses. The year love might have existed or was possibly only doomed. That's just what Hong Kong represented for me, and the food here brings me back to that beauty's

I felt like I lived a Wong Kar wai film, however maybe not, maybe I didn't live at all...

came here for dinner after hearing my friends kept talking about how good the food at this place is. ordered the beef with egg gravy on rice,
my sister ordered the egg sandwich, and my friend ordered the toast with fried egg and macaroni noodle soup set. in terms of the service, it was pretty quick and the size of the restaurant is quite small, which reminds me of the cafes in hong kong.

while the price of the food here is relatively cheap, their mains come together with a drink of your choice, the taste of the food did not live up to our expectations. my friend liked her food a lot while my sister was pretty neutral about her egg sandwich. maybe it's just my dish that wasn't that appealing taste-wise but i might be willing to give this another try one day.

Simple is good, very Hong Kong's style breakie.
Ste menu : instant noodle with satay beef, with ice coffee mix with tea(YING YANG), scramble egg, and butter toast.
One bad thing they didn't open before 11 am
Will be great if they open a bit early

Being here reminds me of the old school cha cha teng in HK. The small room which can serve approx 15 people (sometimes you have to share). Great HK cafe style food with a free drink. Get the milk tea with char siew omelette. That is what I like to call real HK afternoon tea.

This is a hong kong style char chan teng.
If you wanna get a feel of how it is like in Hong Kong, this is a place not to be missed in Melbourne. The food are not too bad either.

Butter toast:
Yums! So good. But would definitely up the game if there's some spread of filling inside. The center was a little dry.

Everything else is simple. Mainly people come here for the set which is value for money. With $10.50, you get a drink, a toast with egg of your choice and a small meal. It's a satisfying breakfast with various flavours.
The most authentic Hong Kong style milk tea and macaroni soup! I usually get the chicken wings macaroni but the ham and sausage versions are equally good! They are the ONLY one in Melbourne to use the correct/authentic type of macaroni typically served in HK 'cha chan teng' (aka HK style cafe).

Tiny and quaint, but filled with childhood nostalgia. Yes the food is very simple and can seem like something you can make at home, but that's precisely the point. This is a cafe you go to when you want to feel like at home. Brought a smile to my face and tear in my eye! Will definitely come back.

Came here for lunch today becausr i wanted to try something new. This restaurant is small and does not seat many people. It serves up hong kong cafe style food. I ordered slice chicken in cantonese style sauce. It was ok but reminds me of something my mum would whip up at home. Service was good but i wouldnt come back.

As a girl from northern mainland China, I love Hong Kong dishes so much. But this restaurant not up to my standard.
The most interesting thing is one of my Hong Kong friends is crazy about this restaurant. LOL Maybe I need to explore its signature dish next time.

A hidden gem for us Hong Kong people. It's located inside a small lane so you won't notice unless someone recommend you here. If you were grown up in Hong Kong then you will know the taste. The set meals here are pretty much the same as I've been ordering for lunch when I was in high school. Prices are cheap as $11-12 for a meal with traditional Hong Kong style milk tea. Service is efficient considering only 1 staff is serving. The only problem is the place is so small so it get fully packed very easily.

I saw a photo of this place in instagram and the way it was described was it reminded them of HK. I have been to a specific cafe in Auckland that is similar and I kinda miss that so I put this place in my bucket list. The cravings for this HK cafe intensify so I decided to come here. They have this special deal going where you buy a meal and it comes with a drink. I opted for the sliced beef with black bean and a milk tea. I find the meal a little bit salty but the milk tea was really good. If you are looking for something fancy then I must say, you should go elsewhere. I will definitely come back for the milk tea.

Small shop in a narrow alley. Great Hong Kong food. My Hong Kong Friends recommended me to visit and try. The proportion of food is quite large. I can't eat all. The price is cheap. My favorite food is sliced beef in egg sauce on steamed rice. The sliced beef is tender and chewy. Yummy!

One of those hidden gems in Melbourne. Requires a bit of effort to find but it's a little bit of Hong Kong in Melbourne. Cheap too! Only $12!!!

I love this place. Reminds me of HK. The owner is quiet and leaves u in peace. Despite being a tiny place, ppl are polite and it's easy to have a quick filling meal.

By the end of day 10 it is given without saying that we were feeling pretty homesick. Missing my own bed and blankets we could do very little but to seek out some homey comfort food on the eve of our return. Having heard that there was an authentic Hong Kong Style Cha Chaan Teng at the end of Celestial Lane, that's where we headed for our last meal in Melbourne.
Aki
This place smells the same as what a typical hong kong cha chaan teng smells like, especially places where they serve toasts and macaroni as breakfast haha! Hidden in a laneway near China Town, it can take a person who is not good in navigating awhile to get here. Proportion wise the dish is not too bad. I like pork chop with rice in honey and pepper source.

Cheap and decent Hong Kong food! You can basically get a meal at around $10-$12 (usually comes in a set!) it's quite a hidden place along Chinatown as it's located in an alley! Just make sure you open your eyes wider while looking for it!

It's my second time having dinner here. Reminds me of the food in Hong Kong. Very cheap food - comes with a free drink! Must order milk tea as it really tastes the same as the one in Hong Kong. I orderd mince meat with raw egg on rice, very good. This restaurant suits the people who want cheap and quick food.
Amy123
Food is pretty average, and at times below average. Recommend coming here for their HK milk tea only - best in the CBD.

The place is pretty small, so come in early and be prepared to share a table.

Heyday is a miracle, because after all these years, against all common sense of operating a restaurant, it is still standing.

Has the best dessert in Melbourne - French toast and golden syrup. Taste dat now!

Awful.. I was excited to try this place, a little hole in the wall joint, down a back alleyway in Melbourne's Chinatown. The menu was large, the prices were very reasonable. I ordered the sliced chicken over rice with spicy garlic sauce, it took all of two minutes to make..which generally wouldn't concern me but by how truly awful my dish tasted and looked it was no surprise! Imagine day-old tasting boiled chicken re-heated over rice and drowned in what tasted like garlic sauce from the can. My partner had the beef over rice with thai style sauce. Same ordeal for his; sour tasting beef with rice drowned in more sauce from a can.

I generally do not like to think of myself as a picky person. I am not too awful critical when I go out to eat; if it's good, it's good. It takes a pretty bad experience to drive me to give such a negative review. So please save yourselves from eating here. Unless you want to take a risk (maybe it was an off day for them, and goodness I hope that's the case for their business' sake!)

CHEAP AND YUMMY. worth the value of money paid.

On this day for me it was the bbq pork omelette, char siu wrapped in an omelette and placed on a bed of rice. Not the most attractive looking of meals to be sure but the combination of flavours is good, the pork fresh and the whole thing lighter and less stodgy than you would expect.
