Review Tono On Borsari - Melbourne

Arthur Felipe Andrade
The food is very, very delicious! The taste is authentic of an Italian handmade food. The restaurant exceeded my expectations. It was the best Italian restaurant I have ever been to in Melbourne. There are options for pastas, gnocchi, risottos, pizzas, steaks and etc. The service was attentive and friendly. The atmosphere and staff are pleasant. I will definitely go back many times.

Honestly, I'm trying to find something nice to say about the food we ordered (can't speak for the other items on the menu) but after about 24 hours of reflection, I'm struggling. We ordered a small Hawaiian pizza, napoletana penne and a creamy mushroom fettuccine. Ok first off, though average, I'm glad we ordered the pizza because I couldn't eat much of anything else. The napoletana was super salty and penne overcooked. The creamy mushroom fettucine was the worst I've had in my life, and I've had a lot of al funghi pastas in my life. The sauce tasted like water with a dash of milk, raw garlic and cornstarch, and the fettuccine was thick and overcooked to the point where there were dints in the pasta. It looked like a kid had made it out of play dough tbh. To top it off, both of the pasta dishes came with a single leaf of spinach instead of basil, which was the cherry on top, really. 🍒 Sorry, but if you're gonna call yourself an Italian restaurant, please do better.

Quite a good Italian restaurant. Highly recommended. The atmosphere is great and there was a guy making fresh pasta on the spot. Quick service and tasty food.

Very bad and awkward service and food was horrible.. marinara spaghetti tasted EXACTLY likepre-made sauce from can and pre-mixed seafood from woolies - not fresh at all. Spaghetti was so soft, way over-cooked... Steak was very tough and the sauce tasted like pre-made sauce. Definitely not going back again, especially for the expensive prices on the menu - you can get way better food on Lygon for your buck.

Just had a lovely spaghetti ragu with a glass of wine here, for the second time in as many weeks. The house made pasta was Al Dente & the ragu tasted amazingly good 👍 Topped off with a decent glass of red wine we were very happy. We found some of the other negative reviews on here quite amusing - perhaps they came for dinner at peak time and didn’t like the long wait? Late on Sunday night is the perfect time, plenty of tables, fast friendly service from a family restaurant that clearly loves what they do

Veal prosciutto amd creams sauce 38 approx Past polling chicken cream spaghetti 25 Bottle of red cab sav 55 Food was ok Service wasn't as good as it should be, saw 2 to 3 people walk out while waiting for a waiter. Lighting is quite dark. Needs improvement overall and not impressed probably wouldn't come back.

Napoletana was worse than Coles’ jar. Seafoods pasta needed more its sauce(dried fast). Best location but not the foods. As a chef, considering everything with an inductive conclusion, won’t recommend.

STAY AWAY!!!!! Went here as it was the first place we saw and were starving! Wish we had have ignored the promise of ‘free fresh homemade garlic bread’,( which was obviously store bought frozen). If these people are Italian, they ought to be utterly ashamed of themselves!! The pasta was the WORSE I have ever had!! It tasted like those ready made pastas in the box, but worse if u can imagine!! The carbonara sauce tasted funky and was full of just bacon fat!i had 2 mouthfuls and honest to god, wanted to gag. Everything was wrong with it, it was like I was in that Kitchen nightmares show with Gordon Ramsey. They try to put any customers out front so it looks busy, u walk in and it’s dead and dead for a very good reason! The waiters r standing around doing nothing, just watching you stare at ur disgusting meal. I only leave reviews if a place is very good, or if it’s very bad! This place is just beyond bad! How do u make pasta soooo utterly disgusting! I will remember this dish for a long time to come. For all the wrong reasons. Never again will I go anywhere without reading reviews!

I wandered in with two friends on a Sat night, and was immediately greeted by the friendly staff. The menu and wine selection is amazing. 10/10 to the freshly homemade pasta and pizza. Such a lovely experience. We will call in again.

The short version. The gnocchi is perfect and the service is epic

.This was an amazing dinner. My girlfriend and I went for a bit of Italian on Lygon. During restrictions limited seating. We didn't have to wait long for a seat. There was a man making pasta in the window and looked too good to miss. We had cheesy arancini (which was a special) entree, an allnido large pizza and a gnocchi Al pesto as our mains to share. The pizza and the arancini were very nice however I have had pizza similar on Lygon before (which means it was amazing ) but the reason to return was the gnocchi which my girlfriend ordered. I am not a big fan of pesto but this was the absolute best gnocchi I have ever had. When we go for Italian it is usually entree pizza and pasta so gnocchi is frequently ordered when we eat. I don't think I could explain the quality and taste a true winner. The final touch was impeccable service food was quick but not like it was pre-made. It was definitely fresh, and the waiters were very polite and friendly. Will definitely be coming back

Beautiful food and amazing service! We ordered the arancini, allnido pizza and pesto pasta. All tasted amazing and we were so blown away by the gnocchi that we got another order for takeaway! Will be coming back again very soon.

fantastic service and food quality. owners are lovely and staff are fantastic. Aboudddddyyyyy

I don't understand the bad score. Food was good, nice ambience first drink was for free, friendly staff, fresh handmade pasta. Garlic bread was not from the supermarket like other comment said.

Went to borsaris with a friend of mine and wasn't disappointed at the kind of food and service I got. The service was impeccable by Veena who was our host for the evening and the food was great! Bonus points for the free drinks and the garlic bread!!

I went there with my friends and I must say Pizza I had was best pizza i ever had in my life. Thanks for extra egg plants on my pizza

We really enjoyed our food. We ordered two pastas and one pizza, all seafoods. The food portion is big and the seafoods are really fresh. Good service and good environment. Will definitely come back again.

Service was really great had a lovely waiter ensuring we had water at all times and helping with food selection. Oysters were very fresh and overall a great meal. Surprised at some of the negative reviews I’ve read on here thankfully after I chose the restaurant as I definitely didn’t have the experience some have described. The only thing that I would fault them is the disgusting dirty bathrooms.
We had reef and beef, gnocchi dish with prawns and spinach as well as fresh oysters.
Kanish Popli
They claim to give their diners quick, healthy seafood and they are not wrong. Delicious seafood, cooked to perfection- appropriately sized portions and lovely flavors.
Everything is fresh & got delivered on time.

Thanks to team Tono On Borsari & team Zomato.

Went there because it is on Eatclub. Gee what a mistake that was! Some of the worst 'italian' food I have ever tasted. Service was horrible too, waiter was casually racist towards us. We will never go back there again. Please people, don't go there just coz it's heavily discounted on eatclub
Pamela Bishop
Told us the pasta would be fresh, was clearly packet pasta. Dull tasting spaghetti Bolognese, expensive for quality, eerily quiet inside.
Casual racist jokes from the Italian man out the front towards Asian restaurant owners on Lygon St.
Never served water the whole time.
Authentic Moon
Honestly, I was just looking at the menu just curious and there pops out the MANAGER of the restaurant promoting his own restaurant saying "WE MAKE FRESH FOOD NOT FROZEN" it wasn't even fresh at all! And he also said, "Other pizza restaurants have Indian, Afghanistan etc chefs but this one has a pure Italian chef" That is so racist. When we bought the food we looked inside and oop the pizza looked like it was not fresh at all.
Hungrygypo
I would give this place a zero if I could.
I have no photos of.the food because we didn't get any.
We waited for 1 hr and 50 minutes and literally didn't even get our drinks ( solo) which they just grab out of the fridge. We ordered a pasta and a soup and walked away with nothing. We couldn't wait any longer. They can't keep up with demand.
Do not recommend this place at all.
Sylvia's POV
I understand there's some level of competition to convince customers to sit down at your restaurant when there's a whole street full of restaurants with similar food. So, I really commend Tono On Borsari; your skills managed to pull my friend and in.
Free drinks? That was probably the one of the only things positive about the experience.
The garlic bread was the kind you would get at a supermarket for $1.
My lasagne was extremely bland. The side salad that came with it was even more bland.
My friend's pasta was most definitely not the handmade pasta showing in the window of the shop, it tasted like, and most likely was, boxed dried pasta.
The wait staff seemed disinterested being there. No table water was served, nor could be flag anyone down to order some.
There's a whole street full of places to eat. Try elsewhere.
Loris Mikhail
Stop. Please don’t be fooled by the guy standing at the front giving away free drinks or the fake pasta making guy in the window - it’s all a scam and for show. Theses are the new horrible owners who can’t cook let alone cook authentic Italian. This place used to be an amazing authentic Italian restaurant called Borsari’s. The food is now disgusting. The waiting time is ridiculous. The prices too high (making up for the free soft drinks they offer). The restaurant is dirty. The drinks flat coming from 1.5 letter plastic bottles. The food almost felt like it was frozen and defrosted.

However, if you want entertainment, go in just to watch the guy making the pasta in the window show off his faking skills. He touches the pasta pretending he made it, serves customers, plays with his phone, and goes back and touches the pasta again pretending to still be making it; all while in the same pair of cloves. Enough said. Worst restaurant in ALL of Melbourne. Trust me on this one. Overall below par. Period!

My girlfriend and I dined here last Monday night after a bit of resturant hopping on lygon street and this was the place that we didn’t want to leave! I can say that we will definitely be back! First off the service was lovely, I think our waiters name is Donny if I remember correctly, he was fantastic. The food was amazing. We started off with half a dozen of each of the oyster types and all were sooo delicious. Then we shared a plate of pasta (I can’t remember what the dish was called) and the prosciutto pizza. Couldn’t fault a thing. You will most likely see us back there this Monday!
Katarina Waszaj
What a disappointing experience! They advertise as having fresh home made gluten free pasta and pizza at at an extra cost.
My pasta choice was only spaghetti and they were just awful. The sauce was so bland I had to add olive oil and salt for flavour. The gluten free pizza base in not freshly made but frozen and outsourced. Not interested in paying top price if it’s not fresh. My husband’s pasta was out of a packet and not freshly made.
The mushroom sauce lacked everything, mushrooms and sauce!
The S&P calamari were dry and tasteless. The green salad was nothing but a small bunch of lettuce and 2 small pieces of tomato. Why call it a salad?
Everything was so overpriced it was not funny.
To top it all off a mouse ran right across under our table and under the drinks fridge! Never again!!
Viewed the menu and ordered before reading the reviews. Restaurant inside is comfortable and clean. Ordered the garlic bread which was nice as a starter, that was the only good part of our dining experience. The waitress wrote down a wrong dish so we had to wait a little while for the correct dishes to come out, that in itself not a big deal. However the main dishes both pasta dishes were a big disappointment, very average especially for the price. When the manager or owner asked if everything was ok, we told him that the mushroom sauce was watery and tasted oily, and that the 5 little pieces of chicken were not enough. Instead of acting like a professional he bluntly pulled a face without acknowledging the comment and walked off. Bottom line is Tono is average and over priced.

We celebrated my daughters birthday last night with friends, and enjoyed the amazing food at Tono on Borsari. The pasta was so fresh and delicious. The risotto was perfect and the pizza's were amazing as usual including the gluten free variety. The service was exceptional and the atmosphere was buzzing. Would highly recommend this place as the place to go when dining in Lygon Street.
Svenja Grabo
We sat down before I had time to check the online reviews and so it is with great regret that we had dinner at Tono’s.

Bruschetta isn’t served on brioche for starters but that was probably the least unpleasant surprise that night. The bread was way to sweet and nearly cremated, not enough toppings and no red onion. No olive oil and only the tiniest bit if sweet balsamic glaze on soggy tomatoes. Simply no.

We ordered two pizzas and whatever it was they put on top looked like cheese, however, the bubble gum texture made it hard to cut let alone eat. I very much believe I would have not been able to digest the cheese so I took it off completely which wasn’t hard and it came off like a rubbery plate.

Rarely had equally bad or worse Italian but I guess my mistake for not checking the reviews.

Step up your game Tono - it doesn’t need a gourmet cook to make a half decent pizza or bruschetta

Amazing food and service! We came here as a group of 30 and the staff were fantastic. Quality of food was also exceptional and we will definitely be back

The worse dining experience I have ever had. Food is not bad, but we need to wait for more ham 15 minuet just to get a take away box. After we agree to put it in a bag instead of a box we waited for another 10 minute before we can actually get our food and go. In between, no one on the floor is willing to help us.

2 weeks ago my sister, her 3 kids and I came for dinner after asking if they could assist us given one of the kids has an anaphylactic tree nut allergy, the guy out the front "sold" us and told us that they would not only ensure the food was nut free but ensured us that all their food would be "exquisite" or we don't pay. So feeling reassured we walked inside and sat down. Sadly I had not had the chance to check the Zomato review before we did this. The food was nowhere near the quality the prices suggested, in fact I have had much better from the local home delivery outlet at a 10th of the price. The service was very slow, it took a long time after we sat down for the waiter to ask us if we wanted to order drinks and when we did, we also asked for some garlic bread as a starter. The garlic bread came out and was a small serve given the 5 of us so we asked for another serve. We waited for what seemed like eternity for the second garlic bread to come out, our drinks had long gone dry and we could not get the attention of the waiter to get more. Then the mains came out before the second garlic bread we had ordered 30minutes before had. Given this we asked to cancel the garlic bread and were told that the waiter was bringing it now and that things were brought out of the kitchen in the same order that we had ordered them and it was too late to cancel it.... we had wanted it earlier to keep the hungry kids happy given the long wait! As for the mains- very, very average, overcooked fish in the chowder, parmiagiana's were just ok, nothing special and the pizza was just acceptable. As for the kids spag bowl the 7 year old couldn't tolerate as it was very heavy on the pepper (fine for an adult but too much to be sold as a kids meal). We had also asked what the parmies were served with and were told steamed potato, broccoli and carrots tossed in butter. We asked if we could please have chips with veg instead of potato with veg and were told no, we would have to pay extra to have that on the side. For the price point of the meals, this answer was hard to swallow. All in all, a meal that consisted of garlic bread, 2 parmies, a Mexican pizza, a kids spag bowl and a "special" chowder, 3 soft drinks, 3 beers and a glass of wine, I thought the $176.50 bill was highway robbery for barely average food (and I mean just barely average), poor service and back chat from the waiter over the tardy garlic bread...... which yes they did charge us for! So despite the assurances that the food would be exceptional or we would not pay, I did pay because I just wanted to get out of there and chalked it up to experience. I would never go back and would actively discourage others to go there and feel very embarrassed that when I took my family from interstate to Lygon street for dinner in Australia's food capital, the food and service was so bloody poor. To say I was disappointed is an understatement.... needless to say we went elsewhere for our desserts!

I don’t mind this place actually! We’ve visited twice now and it’s nothing special but good place to take friends for cheap, acceptable food.

It’s also quiet enough so that you can talk to your friends but without being too quiet
Cherie 🍒
Visited this restaurant on a Tuesday night and it’s very quiet. We tried their smoked salmon and Aussie pizza. It’s taste average but good ambience for a family dinner. Very short waiting time for the food and was offered free drinks by the owner.

Great food! I had the chicken and mushroom pasta and my partner had the Neapolitana which she also enjoyed. Good service and we were given a free glass of red.

Went here on the spur of the moment (probably wouldn't have gone based on previous reviews) and found it to be quite acceptable. Convinced the guy out the front to give us free garlic bread, which was just as well, as it was pretty basic. The wine list was OK and the service was a little slow, but very friendly. There were five of us and between us we ordered tortellini calabrese, chicken risotto, a barbecue pizza, the pepper scaloppini and the pesto scaloppini. Everyone enjoyed their meals and they were all cooked well. Of particular note were the two sacaloppini dishes, which both came with potatoes and vegetables. Both were delicious. The pricing was average - by Lygon Street standards! There's a lot of choices to eat in this area, so I can't say we'll be back, but we left with no complaints.
Nick Richards
My Lasagna is on the floor now. Better out than in or maybe back to Costco where it came from. Scammers at the front door roped me in to this chuck up house. Hurl in the street or on the cash register. I felt raped after I came here and will be back to take a dump on the front door
David
Overpriced tasteless slop. Had the Tono Parma very tough more like a $12.00 special from a grubby pub not worth the $35.00 we paid. Would not recommend this place.
Vanessa O'Sullivan
Worst Italian restaurant on Lygon St!
Almost $30 for a bowl of pasta? What a joke! Shittest pasta I’ve ever had in my life. I cook better at home!

Don’t let the pushy owners and chef suck you in to going inside you’ll only leave disappointed and worried you’ll have food poisoning the next day!
Marion Jeffrey
Staff were lovely. Service was great. Food was average and disappointing. The food was way over priced. I will not be going back. The bruschetta lacked flavor.

Just one advise : Stay away. Horrible food. Most tasted like pre cooked super market food. The service was equally bad. Never again. Would rather get a pre made sandwich from 7/11 across the road but never ever eat here again.

This probably my worst experience ever, we found a long hair in our pizza and waiter didn’t even say ”sorry” when they take it back and make another one. Food quality is awful, I’ve never taste any spaghetti pasta this bad to be honest...lastly, attached “take away bag” of our pizza, no plastic cover bag, no container, just this cheap take away paper bag...and the price is ridiculously expensive, not worth of this kind of quality at all. Friendly remind do not waste your time and money on this restaurant.

The decor / vibe is pretty basic, no quaint italian feels. No tablecloths etc. More a family restaurant than a romantic date type of location. Quite a noisy ambience. The man at the front will promise you the earth.. as to whether the staff follow up is the question. Our waiter was not friendly. Seemed pissed off that we had been offered 2 wines. When we were ushered in there was no follow up on service with a wait staff. I requested water and was told to “be patient “. After about.. 20 mins no water. We asked another staff for water who promptly and friendly organised it. So I would say it was our one waiter that was rude. The garlic bread was like you’d get at coles but dry. My partner thoroughly enjoyed his carbonara. My spaghetti was good but it’s difficult to stuff up spaghetti. We weren’t offered a dessert menu. The wine was warm as were the glassware provided. I probably wouldn’t go back in a hurry mainly due to the unfriendly staff which if lovely would have made up for the shit garlic bread.
Good Food Good Mood
I’ve eaten here twice now and it very much reminds me of a La Porchetta style and quality of dining except without the value proposition as the prices are a lot more inflated. I had the gnocchi pesto which was a bit more reasonable as are the pizzas. There main meals are borderline extortionate for the type of place this is but I did observe them to be generous serves. Given the location you can find a lot better bang for your buck further along Lygon
Ck1996
Very poor service. Waited over an hour for food after questioning how far away it is a few times. Waited over an hour for the table to be set, asked for napkins 3 times, only to have to go and get them ourselves. Awful service, really wouldn’t bother wasting your time or money!
Honey Cat
Never trust the guy outside who selling you with 20% off discount! Finally, we got no discount for the bill. The food is bad! Too expensive, not worth!
George
STAY AWAY
I had dinner there with my wife. Big big mistake. Food is below average, service is below average as well. Don't waste your time or money please.
Melissa
Bad, really bad. Worst ever. Everything they serve is just cheap, pre-made and pre-packaged supermarket food at higher than average restaurant prices. Also, breadsticks, lots of breadsticks sticking out of dishes, why?
Doricoz
Old dude out the front lured us in with promises of 20% discount - didn't actually materialise - giving it all that cliched Italian patter. Plus side were old waiter inside was good fun and gave good service. Garlic bread clearly store bought. We had a Mexicana pizza (ordinary) and a reef n beef which looked a little better. Whilst on his entrapment drive we witnessed the old Italian dude treat an Asian customer with complete disdain, not good folks.
Diane
Disappointing dinner. Friends booked for a birthday dinner telling us this was a favourite spot. Friendly enough welcome despite being seated at a table for x6 when booking for 5. Pricy for very ordinary meals. Friendly waiter who did his best with a poor product. My husband and I shared a salt and pepper calamari entree for two- nicely flavoured and tender calamari but the dish was let down enormously by the packaged sauce x2 served with it and limp salad. My main of veal with fungi sauce arrived cold. When it returned to me heated the meat was rubbery and dry, lacked flavour and had too much cream in the sauce. Roasted vegetables were pleasant. Other meals were large and rather under whelming. Two of our party had desserts and both seemed packaged, lacked imagination and awful: tiramisu and apple strudel. Comfortable and well located, this restaurant could be great but it's far from it. Good lighting and environment, poor meals, smelly bathrooms and I couldn't help but notice the very messy kitchen (filthy floor, lots of food scraps) on the way past to the bathroom. I wouldn't rush to return here, so many other good options in Carlton. Borsari needs to lift in so many areas, hard to believe it survives in a thriving food strip like Lygon Street! $130 for two, bill split between 5, one bottle of wine taken, one purchased there. Even the complimentary port to finish couldn't make me love this place, sorry - just dreadful!
Pinch Of Bacon
Food was disappointing and a bit over-priced for what you get. Service was also fairly slow. Not in a hurry to make a return visit when there are so many other good places to eat close by.
James Tully
We don't have zero star options on zomato or I would have given it I ordered pasta Napolitano the sauce was dodgy not authenticate Italian It was just a simple tomato paste bought off the supermarket with added water.
Whenever I walk there they are always empty so I should have known.
Amanda Laing
If i could could give less than 1 i would ... terrible service - had to ask for cutlery and the waited over 20 mins just for water. The "home made" gnocchi is questionable and tasted pre chewed and was cold to boot. When brought to the attention of the manager/owner he didnt seem phased at all and didnt even attempt to turn the situation into a more positive experince. Wouldnt even recommend to some i dont like. Just all around awful ... keep walking down lygon st
Daniela
Had dinner here with a group of friends and it was ok, but not great. The interior looks nice and inviting and the staff were quite friendly and attentive but unfortunately the food wasnt the best..i had Prosciutto pizza and it was very cheesy and the base was quite thin. It was ok, but not very enjoyable. Its a shame because the place looks nice but the food lets it down :(
B Donovan
Terrible food. Questionable cleanliness. Very expensive. Service is mostly polite except for the old guy who is trying to usher people into the restaurant, he's dodgy.
Doctor D
immoral and shameful place. lygon street is full of bog standard italian food but not having prices on a menu is illegal isn't it. this restaurant was previously so good but has fallen a long way with (?) new owners. steer clear - go to Lygon street north 2km up the road

I had a great time with my family for dinner here. The boss has a good sense of humor and was very welcoming. The waiter was very attentive and friendly too! The food was delicious especially the seafood pasta, the taste of seafood covers the whole dish including the sauce and the pasta itself. The seafood is very fresh with its 'bouncy' texture. I will recommend this to my friends
Briana Osullivan
Worst meal ever! Ordered the lamb shanks...so dry and tough I could barely cut it with my knife. Raised the issue with wait staff who did not even apologize just smiled and took my plate...no further comment from any other the staff. We doc watch them analyze the plate but still nothing was said to us. Upon receiving the bill we were shocked at the price of $46 for the terrible lamb shanks. Raised our issue with another of the staff...believed to be one of the management, again with very little apology and a lot of excuses. Took $15 off the worst meal I've ever had with very little sincerity... Will not be going back and will be telling everyone we know

We had some overseas guest and was looking to bring them to eat some great Italian food on Lygon St. Walked passed Tono on Borsari Restaurant and a lady recommended us to try them out. Said that all pasta was freshly made, they've been around for ages, plus they'd give us a 25% off total bill.

The restaurant looks nice and the menu looks good too. So we decided to give them a try. Was the worst decision we've ever made. Waitress couldn't speak proper English. Lasagne was too sour, Chicken parma was dry and wasn't the traditional parma with bacon, chips were dry, fish and chips was dry...could taste that fish wasn't fresh and something out of a frozen box and seafood pizza was too salty and dough not fresh.

To top it off, when we paid the bill, they did not honour their 25% off total bill!! Instead they just gave us less than 20% and when we asked why the discount was less, they insisted that it was 25%!!! They just blatantly ripped us off!! Basically, do not recommend anyone to dine at this restaurant. Quality of food and service is appalling.
Gemma De Losa
I would never go back!! The lady at the door was nice at the start then she just got to full on and so unprofessional. Talking down to her staff, having arguments infront of the customers! We got charged $6 bucks for a glass of the flattest Fanta and coke I've ever had. The bill comes out and we couldn't even read what was hand written on it! The quality of food for that price was a joke!!! I could of made everything better at home myself!!
Ruby Rose
Worst lady at the front yelling at everyone to come in. Yelling after people. Asking racist comments about people's groceries. Yelling at her waitresses with no respect. Do not ! Do not support this restaurant
George Joseph
Lady at the door is disgusting, just as the food is. . , ,

bad service. The woman on the door is very disrespectful to others walking on the street, was even abused by her. Food was terrible and overpriced.

A quiet, decent Italian restaurant on Lygon Street Carlton. Ambience was decent, lot of space to accomodate privacy . Restaurant has a good collection of Red wines.

Entree: Italian bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar , Garlic bread, Potato wedges with sour cream, Calamari deep fried. 7/10

Drinks: Red Wine: Cab merlot 8/10, Shiraz 7/10. Mocktails not listed on menu but the good staff made two Pineapple mocktails for us. Very refreshing 8/10.

Mains: Lamb shanks with potato gravy 6/10, Risotto Pollo was very tasty 9/10, Penne with creamy mushroom sauce 8//10, Tono parma was good too with extra mushroom tomato and egg plant 8/10,Spaghetti Bolognese 8/10, Chicken schitzel 7/10.

Service: Was over all good but for the fact we waited for 45 minutes for deserts and they had forgotten so had to leave without having deserts. Also the bottle of wine they served was not opened at the table .

Revisit: Yes.

Worst food and service ever!!! We always eat on lygon st and wanted to catch up with family in a less noisy venue but the service was extremely average and the food terrible!!
We had chicken served to our table and it was huge and looked amazing??? But then when it was cut open it was so raw it may have still be moving!!! When we advised of this, it was taken away and re cooked!!! When it re appears at our table 20 mins later it was dry (had the same knife cuts as when we sent it back) the staff did not apologise or acknowledge this whole issue!! No discount was given, no apology, no clean cutlery.
Our dessert was a chocolate Bavarian straight from Sara Lee served with an Extortion price tag!!
We will tell everyone how bad this restaurant is and how bad the food and service is!!
I have never, ever eastern such crap!!!

I had a late lunch at Tono on Borsari for the first time today and chose Mushroom Penne in a creamy sauce. I found the overall flavour good but nothing special and the price of $23 was a tad expensive. My meal was served steaming hot and within 10 minutes of time of ordering but I was the lone customer at 2pm having just watched an IMAX 3D movie nearby. The provision of service was excellent, the two young staff were very friendly, polite as well as being efficient and the manager made a point of asking whether I enjoyed my meal. The restaurant has a modern stylish décor of contrasting mid brown coloured tables & black wooden seats with a rustic wood floor. When I first arrived vocal background music helped to drown out the traffic noise through the open door (although one could still speak over it comfortably), unfortunately staff turned the music off within 10 minutes or so of my arrival.

The Juror's Verdict: Food 2.5/5, Service Provision 5/5, Will I return: Doubtful

Phill Jury (food critic & writer)

Ate here on Sunday night of the Labour Day weekend. Food was overall ok. I had the Veal allo Tono which would have been a lot better if it were thicker and a crispy thinner crumb. Too much of the meat was tough and there was lots of gristle. I had to scrape off a lot of the thicker soggy crumb. The topping was ok. Rating 2.5/5 My partner had the Mushroom fettuccini. He liked it but then had an unsettled tummy soon afterwards. Rated it 3/5.
Service was good although the presence of two senior staff/ owners? out the front trying to get patrons in was off putting to say the least. I also asked for a recommendation but as I didn't like seafood, there was none forthcoming. There was also no Specials Board. Would I return? Probably not. Would I recommend it? I would say spend your money somewhere else nearby. Heaps to choose from.

Pretty standard Italian restaurant. Although the staffs are friendly, but the sitting place is bit squeeze.

I had the mushroom risotto, which is good but not great.

The meal we had was tasteless. I can't rate the service as we didn't get any. I asked for the bill which never came and when I went inside to pay the person taking the money was extremely rude.
Overpriced, incredibly slow service, bland food.

Went as a group of 6 - I ordered a risotto pollo, the food came 40min after we ordered it. When it finally came, the waiters weren't apologetic at all. To top it all off, the food was bland. I wouldn't recommend this even to my enemies, so do yourself a favour and go elsewhere.

I am incredibly appalled with the service here.

My friend and I have organised with owner of this restaurant weeks advance about a booking for 80 people. Upon this arrangement, we agreed to the terms that we will order all 80 dishes in a week advance and provide the list of meals.
After the stressful follow up of orders with friends, we finalised the list of orders and presented to the owner.... After agreeing to these terms numerous times, he saw the list, declined us and broke the agreement, leaving the birthday boy and 80 people with an unplanned evening.

This demonstrates from this restaurant the service and them not agreeing to simple agreements. Everything was planned and set to go, until the late discretion of the owner in which resulted in 81 unhappy customers who definitely will not go to this restaurant.

Annoyed, angry, disappointed and appalled customer signing off.

Had dinner at this restaurant. My aglio olio tasted decent. But my mates food was below average. The fish and chips wasn't well seasoned.. But their service was good- nice and polite. However, while one of the waitress was collecting our plates. So happened thay my friend handed over the plate to the waitress and the fork fell off the plate and landed on my friend's phone. It left the phone with a crack. We spoke to the owner and the waitress a couple of times. We understood it was an accident. They did apologised and we did accept it. However, we weren't pleased with the way they handed the situation- giving reasons like "I have 3 functions to handle", "I am very busy". We are your customers. We have the same rights and privilege like others. Please don't use the these reasons to other customers next time. Wasn't a pleasant experience.

ENTER AT OWN RISK!!! Not sure what was worse, the pizza or cockroaches. Would think a place on lygon could keep up with their pest control requirements. Save your time and eat a McCains at home. Thank you Tono on Bosari, I now have a place on lygon i no longer have to visit

Waitress very pleasant and attentive. Food TERRIBLE. Avoid this place at all cost and spend your money on real authentic Italian food. The Chicken all Toño was just a Parma.

Worst ever pasta I tried at this place, complete tasteless, and overpriced, I do not recommend this place at all, there are many other places at the area.
