Review Xpressomondo - Melbourne

Was here for a quick brunch today and loved it totally! Ordered a Mocha which was really good! Also tried their veggie breakfast & loved the baked beans!! Garlic bread was yummy too!

Checked out this little cafe and grabbed the lamb shank and a small cappuccino. The lamb were fresh and delicious. The coffee was pretty decent too. Would come back.

Lucky I parked my car back in Dandenong, I always enjoy good food with beer or wine. The place is very close to the station and the ambiance is very nice. Food is great and they had a surprisingly big menu to satisfy your hunger.

Checked out this little cafe and grabbed the mixed berry pancakes and a small flat white. The pancakes were light and fluffy, the berries were fresh and the ice cream was quite creamy which added to the experience. The coffee was pretty decent too. Would come back.

The food was amazing. Came here on a hot day and their iced tea was REFRESHING. John made sure that our food was spicy just as we asked. He is very friendly and made sure we were happy with our meals.

We stumbled across this place while walking through the city and it didn't disappoint. The coffees were delicious but could have been a little warmer. The eggs bene was just ok. The big breakfast was good and all reasonably priced

This is my second time in Xpressomondo and the manager of this cafe is super nice and kind! I really like the Earl Grey tea from this cafe as well as his secret menu, hot chips. This is located in Degraves st and the view & atmosphere are very cool, I love it.

Have been here before for lunch but didn’t realize breakfast is amazing. French toast is good and arvo brekkie is my fav. Always a busy place, make sure to get your coffees extra hot. Overall, good experience
Kevin Hosea
Overpriced bad food with unprofessional service by the manager (guy). Charged wrong bill while video calling, mad at us as like we didnt want to pay instead of apologize. Do not come here

I’m still recovering from the shock of being told to hurry up and decide on our meal or move on. We obviously moved on but continued to watch as other people were told the same or were advised that they could not sit down if they only wanted coffee

I don't normally review places, but this is a first. Menu said sourdough but we were served coles white bread. The avocado looked awful. Eggs were undercooked.<br/>Poor unsuspecting tourists.

If hate is a word, the manager oozes it out...how can customers be asked to leave...no words can express this insult...a personal note to the manager, please come to India, we will fold our hands and welcome you and of course serve the best food ever...#melbourne

Did not expect this . We called for food and some cofee but the manager was rude saying we all need to order to eat, well his same caste people were just having beverages and taht was ok with him .<br/>I would give a minus for the hospitality. <br/>If it’s about racism then here your go xpressmondo<br/>We Indians are known for our hospitality , we don’t need yours ..

Indecent. The manager is very rude. The food is very bad. Definitely a miss.
Badboy
If i could give them negative stars i would. <br/>The manager is extremely rude and ignorant with a laid back mentality. Food and coffee will probably have the same low quality since its coming from the same horrible person. <br/>For more details contact me through my email.

Friendly staff. Burger Coles stale bun. Seeds in pumpkin soup. Lemon peel in paella

My partner and I were looking for lunch on CBD on a lazy afternoon, so walking trhough Degraves Ln we decided to try this place with a range of italian dishes. After take a look of the menu I decided to try the mussels with napolitana sauce from the specials board and my partner decided for the porter house, medium rare as always. After 2 minutes, the manager asked our order again, apparently the waiter forgot it, was this the first sign? Def. Our food arrived after a 15-20 minutes. My food was a sad version of steam mussels, just in the half of the shell, topped with canned tomato sauce lacking fresness and flavor, accompanied with 2 pcs of "garlic bread" (butter with raw garlic on top). My partner steak was over-cooked and the smashed potato tasted old, maybe from the day before. We couldnt finished it, so we pay and talked to the manager who seemed surprised by our feedback, arguing that the specials are popular and sold day by day without any claim, really? This one was one of the worst food experiences of my life

I had lunch today, the food was really nice and service was awesome. I will definitely come back again. Manager was really good to me . I also ordered the lemon cheesecake, tasted great.
Some Bunee Loves Food
I was craving for a tiramisu and went into this place which had it in their glass cabinet. Unfortunately I made the wrong decision about it as the tiramisu had zero taste. I tasted everything on it's own and it just tasted like whipped cream and chocolate. Only managed to finish half as it wasn't really what I had expected.
Skinny Picky
Avoid this place guys. Food is overpriced and very touristy. I ordered a egg Benedict and it is the worst thing I’ve ever tasted in my life. You only get a extremely thin slice of toast and some watery sauce on it yet they are brave enough to charge me 20 for it. What a rip off. Will never return!

Very bad experience. I am honestly aghast at the food this place was serving. New Years day and we decided to come here for breakfast as only a handful of places were open. We should have seen it coming as when we looked at the menu it detailed a number of items unavailable. From there we ordered eggs on toast + extras and an egg and bacon sandwich. The meals were unsightly, hastily thrown together and the ingredients included cheap supermarket bread, underdone eggs, soft/squishy avocado and a big blob of tomato sauce on the side of the plate. Not what was advertised on the menu. Not only this, we were expected to pay full price. Completely unimpressed and will not be returning.
Jacob Curtis
I will start with the horrific rudeness of the manager. We sat down at 12.15 for lunch. After finishing our meal at 12.45 we asked for some coffees. The manager told us we had to move and have them inside as another group wanted the table even though we had only been seated for 30 minutes. When we said we werent informed of this when seated he said it didnt matter and had to go inside. When we reiterated we wanted to order coffee he became even ruder and more insistent we have them inside. Absolutely terrible service and incredibly rude. With so many other places around its amazing this place is still open.<br/><br/>Now for the food, portion size was very small. I thought they had mistakenly given us the childrens serve if pancakes, as they were swamped by the plate. The tandoori wrap served with "chips" was bland and with only 8 chips (I counted)<br/><br/>Overall a highly disappointing meal and I certainly would not reccomend to friends. Spend your money elsewhere.
Muzza
A complete disappointment. The big breakfast was served with soggy white bread (listed as sourdough toast), a well overcooked tomato, an under cooked soggy hash brown soaked in what appeared to be vinegar, two dried up overcooked poached eggs and two under cooked sausages that had a very strange taste to them. Although thoroughly under seasoned the mushrooms were the only thing on the plate that hadn't been completely ruined. That and possibly the bacon. We should have eaten at the cafe next door who were serving up what appeared to be some lovely food. Never again!

Very delicious. Like it. I think this restaurant is under-rated. My boyfriend and I ordered Chicken carbonara and Saffron Rissoto. Both were tasty and the prawns are very fresh.

This establishment sadly deserves its modest 2.0 rating. I don’t enjoy saying it, but this place isn’t currently a good use of a prime spot on bustling Degraves Street.<br/><br/>The cafe/bar has few redeeming features. This was a classic case of needing to look at ratings before wandering into a place. We were just after a quick drink before our dinner appointment. The place I’d chosen wasn’t suitable and this one was next on the street. The only reason we entered was because of the lovely spruiker on the street. We regretted it almost instantly.<br/><br/>Our table was incredibly wobbly. Our happy hour sparkling was only filled half way making immediate sense of its half price. The flickering central light suggested an uncertain power supply. There was also an unpleasant smell coming from the kitchen. On the plus side, the lovely spruiker checked in on us a couple of times. The half filled glasses of sparkling also tasted ok.<br/><br/>But, overall it’s a problematic place that needs a full makeover. The worried looks on a couple of similarly trapped international visitors suggested they agreed.

Lamb Shank: Slowly briased lamb shank in a rich Shiraz enhanced sauce with witted baby spinach and smashed potatoes ($27.00)<br/><br/>Review: <br/><br/>Was baited by the hawkers but I should've checked the Zomato reviews first.  <br/>Wasn't a fan of the food, nor the place. Tables were incredibly cramped inside.  <br/><br/>Lamb Shank was a runny mess, and felt more about the quantity than the quality. I had potato pieces, with my potato mash and some carrots as well? Unfortunately, not a welcome surprise.<br/><br/>Definitely going back to berth for my lamb shank feed instead!

Worst seafood paella I’ve ever had. Bland and mushy. Went to pay by EFTPOS but it was down so I had to pay by credit card which they wanted to charge me a surcharge. Do not, I repeat, do not eat here.
Lisa
I mean I didn't expect much, I ordered the tandoori wrap which came with fries. A bit expensive for the small serving. I expected more fries as that was the best part. The wrap was oily but okay. My mate got the parma with chips and salad. The salad was not fresh.<br/><br/>The place is semi busy and that's what drew us to it. Should have checked the rating first. Will not be back.

I’m not sure why we went in here for brunch when there were a lot of other restaurants along the area. Wrong decision that's for sure. I brought my overseas friends to this street for what I thought could be an amazing brunch but I was embarrassed to the brim! The coffee (soy latte) wasn’t milky but tasted awful. My Atlantic salmon was awful. They served it with 1 piece of the thinnest possible toast with mushed avocado and a tiny piece of salmon somewhere plus there's this fried, rubbery haloumi that was out of place. Not only was it bad, it was well overpriced for $22.50. I’d be happy to pay that IF it was good. What a shame to be in that great street and serving this type of food. What a shame. Not coming back to this restaurant again that’s for sure.
Lady In Bread
I want to keep this short, and succinct. Otherwise I will type until my phone is blood. <br/><br/>Absolutely disgusting. <br/>These people do not care about food, nor do they like it. The manager is as below par, ordinary human being as you will ever, ever meet.<br/><br/>Terrible coffee. Dirt. <br/>Penne pasta with off, ammonia chicken. Pretty much cream, three spring onion curls and a whole lot of nothing.<br/>Minestrone soup is thee worst I’ve have ever tasted. Water. Heaps of tomato paste. Barely defrosted hard packaged vegetables. And thick. Terrible.<br/>$8.50 fresh orange juice which was filled to the brim with ice and gone in a few sips. <br/><br/>If it wasn’t for its glorious Melbourne alleyway location, it wouldn’t have stayed open for longer than a week.
Zacquilinelao
If I could rate this place less than 1, I would. The customer service as a whole was below average. Maybe one staff member was relatively nice<br/>The food was absolutely horrendous!!!! I ordered the chicken and vegetable soup. The vegetables weren’t even cooked..... and the chicken tasted off.... the only thing edible was the bread and the raw spinach. My friend ordered the homemade porridge and was also basically inedible that it had to be sent back....<br/>The food was definitely not worth the price and I don’t even know how this restaurant still has business

The worst restaurant I have ever been. The waitress who took my order made mistake at first, but it was fine. Because she got Garlic prawn instead of garlic bread. She was not good at english so I understand. When I finished the meal, I ask the other waiter the bill, but he didnt understand what the “bill” is even though he works in the restaurant where the bill is always required. After that, the waitress who got my order was not able to understand “take-away” as well. In the end, they just charged surcharge without saying anything on my visa card :) It was terrible from the start to the end. I’ll never visit there again and recommend this restaurant to anyone.
Iti Jaiswal
Truly dreadful experience. Stopped by for a coffee and a cake. Wait staff didn't know the difference between a sponge cake and a fruit cake. Cake took 20 minutes to arrive even though the restaurant was half empty and all the staff just stood about gossiping. After all that the cake wasn't even very nice. Never going back!

Had breakfast at this place on Sunday, wish I would have checked out some reviews first.  Coffee was the worst one I have ever had in Melbourne (the home of good coffee!) looked and tasted like an instant coffee :-P Breakfast (poached eggs Florentine) was ok but nothing special.  The worst part was when we were finished the plates were whisked away, bill placed on table and we were asked to go as they had a big group coming and they needed the table :( now that's bad service...worse was to come, they said the eftpos machine was down and we needed to pay cash (should have warned us when we came in)
Johnny
Enough has been said. <br/><br/>And just look at the photos of the food, why do you guys even bother?<br/><br/>I've tasted better frozen food than this.<br/><br/>Rip-off.

I wish I could give a 0 instead of 1... I took a lot of effort to write this review only because I wanted to share how disappointed I was with my experience and to warn others not to ever come here. I took my boyfriend to Degraves Street for lunch. It was his first time in Melbourne and I wanted to impress him. All the cafes were busy but then we spotted quite a few tables free at Xpressmondo. I looked at the menu and prices were quite expensive comparing to other places so I thought it must be a nice place to show off some nice Melbourne street food to my boyfriend. I ordered Smashed Avocado with Spinach and feta on sourdough, chai latte and fresh grapefruit juice. My boyfriend ordered marinara spaghetti and Coke. Chai latte arrived first and not only it had no taste but cinnamon was not added in properly so there were balls of cinnamon powder swimming inside of the glass. I normally never complain but I was disappointed and felt like making a comment to the waitress about it. She called a Manager who said that he will make me a new one. The new one had little taste again, but at least they made an effort, I thought. Then my smashed avocado arrived. First thing I noticed was rotting spinach leaves everywhere. Majority of leaves on the outside were rotting black and slimy, so I started to take the avocado from the top to look underneath and I saw even more rotting leaves underneath. It was too disgusting for me to eat it so I called a waitress and I asked what she thought of this dish showing her all the rotting leaves that I put to the side of the plate. To my disbelief she said that she is a backpacker and she eats even worse looking food. I asked if she would eat it if it was $18. She said no. She took my plate and once again went to show it to the Manager. The manager came back with my plate and started to reassure me that the spinach was washed and it made it look that way. From my experience this is true, but only when you washed it 3 days ago and then let it sit in a bag and rot. He said there is nothing wrong with this spinach and I can eat it because everyone else gets the same and eats it. He put the plate in front of me and left. I was speechless... my poor boyfriend started eating his marinara spaghetti and said that it was quite ok. I nearly cried looking at my plate. I started eating whatever looked edible on this plate, avocado tasted watery but wasn't too bad. Feta was dry and didn't compliment the dish. Bread was low quality and had no butter on it. This was the worst looking and tasting avocado smash I have ever had... My boyfriend offered his dish to me and said he will finish mine. I really felt like crying... but his dish was ok, although I don't think it was worth the $26 it cost. And his coke was ok, too (the only thing we would have no complaint about). But the juice that I got wasn't fresh juice, it was bottled despite of the desctiption on the menu that it is fresh. So there was absolutely nothing right with my order and my expectations weren't met in the slightest way. The bill came to $60 for both of us. The Manager was too scared to even look me in the eye when he was taking the money. I had a look around the kitchen and there were two guys looking like backpackers carelessly stirring food in pots and pans. I was extremely disappointed about the restaurant, about the food and about the whole experience. I have never wasted my money on such a disgusting meal. I learnt though that before taking a seat at any restaurant it is important to read the reviews about it. I have just done that about Xpressmondo and I can now see how many other people had a very similar and disappointing experience there. I can see some positive comments, too and my take on this is that these people only tried cooked dishes that are hard to stuff up, or have low food expectations. But if you are after some fresh food and quality of ingredients, avoid this place or you will get severely disappointed. I know that I will never go back to this restaurant.
Amanda
Worst breakfast I have EVER had. Service was absolutely terrible too. Shambolic. Nothing good to say about this place!! Won't return, ever!!
Caitlin
Absolutely disgusting. Food was over cooked, tasted like chewing char. Menu said wedges, cold and stale chips were served instead, claiming to be an “octopus salad” was burnt octopus with a undressed side salad on the other side of the plate. And $25. Revolting and rude service and service managers who blamed bad reviews on “neighbouring restaurants”

I can't believe that there's so much negative comments on this place. Seems like they're trying to kick out this place off degraves coz it's not as shiny and well maintained. Rarely do I get a perfectly cooked calamari, and that's what I got from them! They make the perfect bruschetta, ohh that vinigarette they have to make for 3days.. Really recommend the food and coffee from here
Eggtart
This place is a disaster. We should've known from the start when all the other cafes on the street were packed but this one was empty. From all the walking and shopping we were keen to just sit down. My friends ordered chai latte and a cappuccino but it was such a disappointment, especially having looked forward to having brunch and drinking good coffee in Melbourne. So save your time and money and don't come here
Helen.brown-may
Ok it’s New Year’s Day and many places are close. But the food was soooo disappointing. The smashed avo and poached eggs had 2 frozen patches in the middle. The Mexican eggs had virtually no chilli and the chorizo had the taste and texture of an over boiled frankfurter. Oh and the sourdough bread was straight off the shelf of Woolies...HNY!
Sonia Cann-Milland
In comparison to the other cafes in this street it is quite conservative. We sat outside and enjoyed the buzzing business of this street. I ordered bruschetta which looked. Lovely tasted plain and seemed more like tomatoes on toast. If you are not an adventurous diner and are looking for simple flavours this is the place for you
Helen
I have to wait ages just for one normal takeaway coffee, literally ages! And they were not even that busy then! And the coffee was ehhhhhhhhhhh…

I wish I could give this place a 0. We came back because my girlfriend enjoys the pasta here (i dont know why i think all their food is pretty terrible and overly salty at the best of times). On this occasion I ordered the lamb shank and she got one of the pastas. The lamb shank was boring and tasteless while her pasta appeared to be store bought and of course cheap tasting. Thank god I dont have to eat here again thankfully they ruined it for my girlfriend so bad this time even she admits its a terrible restaurant.

SCREW THE CRITICS :)<br/><br/>First of all I want to say how disgusted I am by the three reviews I just read. I'm 99% sure they are fake and probably written by people who work for other cafes. I went to Xpressomondo today and had a Beef Ragu for lunch and it was BLOODY GOOD... let me say that again BLOODY GOOD. But since I'm supposed to be professional here let me describe it a little better. Beef very well cooked, nice hearty sauce that warms you up on a cold day and very tasty and earthy vibe to it. Good pasta with it and I do love me a good pasta dish now and then. <br/><br/>Service was nothing like these other three whiners would have you believe, they were very nice, cordial and professional. As for the seating yes it is a little close together but so is the whole bloody street on DeGraves Street and I should know by now... after all I've eaten at almost every food place it has to offer. Unlike these three 'critics' I also have photos to back up my claims about the excellence of the food. Good ones but see for yourself.<br/><br/>And the moral of the story is this when it comes to good food, screw the critics... listen to your gut. :)
Bun's Food Diaries
We were on the hunt for a paella on the busy and lively Degraves St and stopped when we saw these guys had a seafood paella on their specials menu. The tables here are packed literally right next together, it's obvious they want to make an much possible from the limited seating here, so you don't get any privacy at all and it's easy to be listening in on neighbouring table's chatter.<br/>Customer service was crap. On this occasion the EFTPOS machine wasn't working and the girl on the table next to ours went off to find an ATM for cashout and the guy she was with was sitting at the table waiting. He was told by a staff member they had to clear the table so that they could accommodate other customers, and he'd need to wait elsewhere. Now I can understand having a person sitting there not ordering more food is in a way taking away business you could of had but since your EFTPOS situation had inconvenienced the customer in the first place, at least have the decency to let them wait there until their friend comes back.<br/>Now coming to the food, it get's worse - one of the worse 'paellas' we have ever had. This was very much like a risotto instead and too watery. Both of us felt like it was like something we could of whipped up at home (we're not great cooks).<br/>If it wasn't for being situated in a great location with no shortage of foot traffic, going by the level of customer service and food alone, I wouldn't be surprised at all if they eventually go bust.
Hideki
Yum! Love my coffee and Egg Benedict with a touch of critters! I think of it as a flavour enhancer that provide a healthier option with protein than MSG.
Dominic Love
I never ever write reviews for anything, but I made a special exception for the all-round dismal service and food at Xpressomondo. Even after hours following our meal, I am still reeling from the all encompassing depression and self-loathing that me and my friends have endured by choosing to eat at Xpressomondo. First, the service sucked. My friend was asked by the waitress whether she wanted penne or spaghetti, she asked for spag...and got penne. Second, the food was borderline a war crime. My other friend and girlfriend both ordered Beef Ragu and the strips of 'meat' were so tough I thought it was a dog's chew toy. My chicken burger was a microwaved chicken patty that you would get from the frozen food aisle at the super with a slice on Singles cheese on it and a $0.10 bun. All of which I wouldn't mind at home, but for $19 you could do a hell of a lot better at pretty much at burger joint in the city. Do yourself a favour and avoid this place and let it die the quick death that it deserves to allow a better establishment to occupy this prime real estate in Degraves alley.

Just want to offer a piece of advice. If you are making coffee then the customer can see you. We stopped here to have coffee & dessert last night. We received our coffees only to see my wife had 3/4 glass of coffee so she politely asked for it to be topped up. The waiter took it back to the girl making the coffee where she said loudly "what's wrong with it" to which the waiter obviously replied "top it up" & she reacted by rolling her eyes & dramatically slumping the top half of her body over the counter. My wife then said to the waiter "if it's to much trouble don't worry about it" he couldn't apologise enough. With so much competition around you don't need to go back. Factory tasting desserts & the coffee was your standard coffee, not worth the drama that's for sure.
Juley Thai
A bad egg in a bustling, ambient foodie street heaven.<br/>The bad service, rude staff and careless manager seemed like heaven compared to the terrible, overpriced food. Spaghetti marinara was watery, too peppery, had mushy pasta, and used the frozen seafood mix from Coles (I know because I cook with this when I'm lazy). $27 for 7 mussels in a red sauce, with soggy tasteless "garlic bread" that flopped and broke when you lifted it. <br/>THEN when I gave feedback in a civilised manner to the wait staff (I was way too nice about it), she told me she'd pass it onto the manager, then just walked back to the store front and stood there avoiding eye contact. The second wait staff I passed this feedback to said he'd see what he can do, and then took our credit card and charged the full amount anyway without any explanation. The manager was seen laughing as we walked off.<br/>Don't waste your money here. A $8 meal from KFC is 10 times better and 10 times cheaper. It's such a shame this famous Melbourne icon is ruined by terrible food and staff who just don't care.<br/>I won't be back, I won't be recommending, and I would have rated 0/10 if zomato let me.
Peter M
Friendly service and the food was awesome. Bit light on quantity but not lacking in quality. Highly recommend you have a feed here. We are from Adelaide and we need eateries like this at home. Lucky Melbourneians.
Krystal Cameron
Reaaaally poor experience, no waiter could comprehend what we were asking for. Waited a very long time for our drinks (the food came out first) and they tasted awful. Food wasn't great either considering the high price.
Ashleigh
Worst cafe I have ever been to. Overpriced meals for what you get. Asked for eggs Benedict with bacon instead of ham or salmon, was told that was fine, when I received my meal there was ham on there with 2 pieces of burnt bacon. Mushrooms were not cooked at all. When we went up to pay I was being charged for the extra bacon that I asked for INSTEAD of, and was forced to pay for mushrooms even though they were not edible. Do not recommend this place to anyone, save your money!!
Sarah
Most disgusting experience I have had at a restaurant. <br/>Food was inedible and tasted 3 days old. I had the prawn risotto, might as well have been a plate of mushy rice with pepper. My partner ordered the penne ragu. The meat tasted as though it was brought from the super market and left in the pan far to long. Drinks were over priced as was the food. <br/>It is embarrassing that this restaurant exists in lovely Melbourne. Do yourself a favour and avoid at all costs!
Richard Berko
The worst restaurant i have ever been to. As mentioned in many other reviews it puts Melbourne to shame. The quality of the food was at the same level of a child cooking for their parents for the first time. The penne ragu tasted like it was bought as a ready made meal from the super market with terribly cooked dry and chewy meat. The risotto looked like it had a bit of flavour but after first bite i felt like the chef had made me mushi rice with pepper. The drinks were very over priced as well as the food. The chef obviously doesn't put much care into his preparation and we ended up walking away hungry and very dissapointed.
Shivam
The worst experience you will ever have.<br/>They say fresh juice and give you a bottled one poured in glass filled with ice.<br/>Putting Melbourne culture to shame.<br/>No coffee knowledge.<br/>And woah the Manager or whosoever the guy is there is irresponsible and does not know the meaning of customer service. Not at all deserves to be in Melbourne
Lana
I visited xpressomomdo on holidays travelling from Perth. <br/>On my last day of my trip.<br/>I felt inclined to write a review after the amazing experience I Had at this establishment. <br/>There is a good welcoming vibe. Lots of cafe and bars open along the strip. A beautiful place to be and feel grounded. <br/>The service is what caught me. as soon as I mentioned I loved food, she instantly became happy, Worthy of a little extra thought into my meal and review. <br/>The meal was presented beautifully. I asked for "a juicy rare piece of porter house. The juicer the better." And they provided! When I say I want a rare, 7/10 times they will give me a medium well steak, slight pinkage, pretty average. I never see cracked pepper at restaurants! (I've been going to the WRONG restaurants!) the steak was tender and juicy. A little bit fatty, but I like that. It was cooked perfectly. I wish it melted a little more, maybe next time put it on a high temp for a few seconds and crisp up that fatty bit. Then you'd be a 5 star. They served it on a bed of mashed potato with garden salad placed decoratively on top, a splash of balsamic - just right. Cracked pepper. Voila. <br/>Her instant reaction made this whole experience worth while. She respected my appreciation for food. <br/>The portion, a true Australian sized portion, which for me is a little too much, but my boyfriend would clip me along the ears if I made that complaint. Honestly, the portion is perfect for an every day- normal appetite. <br/>Thank you for this interesting and valuable experience. <br/>I will remember this.

Customer service at its worst ever in Melbourne. Went for coffee and were upfront about it said we didn't want dinner . We needed a smoking table , they showed us to a table that we couldn't get into and felt bad to smoke there so we sat at another available table. First they came an told us we couldn't smoke there we said ok we just wanted the coffees then they said they wouldn't serve coffee outside . So basically they asked us to get out in not so many words !!!! Very very bad service ! Have never been treated like this at any cafe ! And I was showing Melbourne off to a friend from Sydney !!! The worst ever !
Andrew T
One of innumerable cafes in the splendid arcades of Melbourne, this one resides in busy Degraves Street, and naturally features tables in the lane way, which is the hip thing to do (irrespective that the laneway is bustling, noisy and crowded, with foot traffic constantly passing by as you try to dine). The café offers some vegetarian fare on the menu, and I opted for the vegetarian breakfast, which was reasonably good, as was the coffee. I can’t say the meal left an indelible impression, but it hit the spot and was fairly inexpensive. The service was friendly enough, and efficient. There are a few tables inside, for those who don’t want to brave the lane way, but it is a little pokey inside.

Polite service, big breakfast was just 'ok' - eggs great, bacon great, mushrooms not great at all. Sausage good, coffee excellent. Does not accept credit card.
Court
Very disappointing breakfast. When experiencing a cafe on the famous Degreaves st in Melbourne this is not what I expected. Atmosphere was the only thing this cafe had going for it, and purely due to its location. Tube avo, cold coffee & warm soggy bread... Would try other Cafes on the strip unfortunately wouldnt return to this one.
Sue Sheehan
we were looking forward to the whole Degraves st  experience but sadly this place did not deliver. The Nachos were THE worst. A few strands of cheese. very little salsa and cold, YUK. the lamb wrap had chewy meat and very little of it with a mass of spinach. Wont go back there.
Marina Sergacheva
I was surprised to see a supermarket bread with a smear of avocado on my plate. It was edible but not something to bring me back for. Disappointing.
David Kravitz (Fandorin)
Average place with average food, nothing special about it. Not a typical Melbourne place, more of a bakery level at most. Not recommended...
GoJo Geoff
Was only here for coffee. Wanted that whole Degraves st thing. Expectations up and was a little deflated by my long black. Lovely area. I sat in the lane way which was busy and noisy, but that's expected! If it had been in the burbs you'd not accept it but here it just adds to the wow. I don't think place pass as a typical cafe in Melbourne. Coffee wasn't great. Sitting is way too cramp. Oh well... better places to go for sure.

Service was fantastic and food great. Business lunch yesterday and will be back. Great coffee. Great service is free and so worth it. A place to visit

I could have rated 1 star, but I gave 2 for its well priced Eggs Florentine. First problem, I ordered a tea they named Cleopatra's because of the name. Turns out it's just a Twining's camomile. So misleading. Second, the caucasian young boy with earrings waiter is so unprofessional, as contrary to the hardworking asian girl one. He cleaned my table as soon as I finished my meal. He immediately gave me bill as soon as my tea finished. What the hell? I thought this is a cafe? Cafe is where people can chill for a while without the feeling that you need to leave ASAP because other people are waiting for your table. Speaking if which, nobody queuing anyway since almost everyone knows how bad this place is. Okay, but that's my experience. Trying other people's perspective, the only main major problem here is their seating layout. It is worse than seating in the middle seat of a middle row in a economy class airplane with strangers on both your left and right.

Sat at this cafe forgetting which one I had been to last time I visited Degraves. Poor choice. We wont forget that we came to this one so we don't make a wrong choice again. The coffee was OK but not as good quality as you expect on Degraves. Our vegetarian panini had one piece of pumpkin and spinach leaves. No cheese and no flavour. It was so bad I reported it to the waitress and told her to tell management. The actual cafe even looked dirty. It was a quick stop for us after shopping in the city, so not too disappointing on this occasion.  But with so many good cafes in Degraves we wont be returning to xpressomondo!!

The coffee was good. I had the eggs florantine and I was a little dissapointed with it. The spinach was actually hard to eat (tasted old or poorly cooked). Nometheless the service was good and the barista is nice ^_^

Another day, another cafe on Degraves St to try! After comparing the menus I found Xpressomondo to have the cheapest Eggs Florentine so I came here for lunch around 1pm. I was surprised that the cafe inside had free seating and that most diners have chosen to sit outside when it was still cold. Latte ($3.30)It tasted standard despite the negative reviews it received.

Discovered this spot wouldn't listen to any negative reviews coffee was sensational as was the food, highly recommend the corn fritters stack👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Avoid this cafe - here's why: The layout of the cafe leaves a lot to be desired. Tables are sat extremely close to each other and the atmosphere within is not a pleasant one. The tables and chairs are cheap, uncomfortable and small. I had no issues with the service - our waitress was friendly, although she forgot to bring water to our table, despite us asking twice. The coffee was arguably the worst coffee I have had at a cafe in Melbourne. It was bitter, burnt and quite frankly tasted awful. For breaky, I ordered the Eggs Benedict. To the cafe's credit, it was nice enough to get a pass from me. I actually quite liked the bread they served with the Benedict. The price was also quite reasonable at $14.00. After such a bad experience here, we were pretty happy to leave and walk down the road to finally get our coffee fix. It is worth noting that this cafe ONLY accepts cash. I am not entirely sure how a cafe can get away with this on such a popular lane-way in Melbourne, so if you are feeling lucky enough to take the gamble here (why would you?), make sure you bring some cash with you. Given the options one finds themselves with on Degraves St, I am really not sure how this business stays afloat. They need to catch up and get with the times and the most effective way to get started with implementing such change is to have EFTPOS services available and offer some decent coffee.

I took my Mum to Degraves Street for the first time this weekend, as she had never experienced this wonderful inner-city laneway before. We decided to give Xpressomondo a try. The staff were super friendly and attentive, which gained them some major brownie points straight off the bat. Our coffees came out first, which were quite good (as one would hope on Degraves Street). The food quickly followed, which whilst a welcome surprise, did give the impression that perhaps not everything was freshly cooked on the spot. I had the 'Xmondo Veggie Corn Fritter Stack' and Mum the 'Big Breakfast'. The fritters were not bad, but a bit 'doughier' / more like pikelets than I expected them to be. The pesto was a nice touch. By all accounts the 'Big Breakfast' was not too bad either. Prices were decent and the service is definitely what stood out overall.

This review is not about the food which this restaurant offers but the way the Manager of this restaurant treats other people. While passing through this shop I saw an advertisement saying "WAIT STAFF/KITCHEN HAND REQUIRED". So I informed a friend of mine about this job opportunity. When he met the manager, the manager humiliated him in from of everyone saying that if he appoints that guy then people will laugh at him. The manager has complete right to select the most appropriate candidate for the job but he has no right to humiliate someone. Whoever is the owner of this business should take some action against this unprofessional behaviour of the MANAGER of this restaurant because I am sure no one will like to eat at such a place where the staff only respects the customers and humiliates other people.

This is hands down the worst place I have every been. My food came out with dairy which I said I wAs allergic too, I sent it back and it came out with dairy again. As I began eating it after it was remade I discovered my patties had egg in them which I also said I was allergic too. I watched a staff member pick his nose then blow snot into a tissue before he brought my coffee over without washing his hands. Disgusting food and disgusting staff. NEVER COME HERE!!!

Takeaway croissant for breakfast: $8. Outside of an airport that's ridiculous. Oh, and he put it in the toaster oven, but apparently it wasn't switched on. From the way the tomato has soaked through the base of the croissant I'd say it wasn't made this morning.

Walked in off the street and was greeted by a very friendly English server. Impressed by the service, I decided to eat here.<br/><br/>I must say it was better than the reviews had me expecting. Got the Thai beef salad and the ratio of beef to salad was very good. Meat was not bad at all but the salad tasted store purchased. I didn't mind though as it was drowned in good olive oil and balsamic (my two great loves).<br/><br/>Serving speed was exemplary as it would have been lucky to have been 5 mins from ordering to it being in front of me (was perfectly cooked as well). Serving size was great. If you're used to Melbourne level food you might be disappointed but I found this enjoyable.<br/><br/>Loses a point for a combination of the price, salad and the pokey table set up inside. Otherwise, on the service, quality and wait time would recommend!

Pros:<br/>- the big breakfast lives up to its name. It is, indeed, big. <br/>- my poached eggs were not overcooked. <br/>- nobody was rude to me<br/>- it's a great area<br/>- the orange juice I ordered was delicious and freshly squeezed. Big points for that. <br/><br/>Cons:<br/>- I haven't had a coffee that bad since I moved down here from Brisbane. It went beyond burning - maybe there's something wrong with the blend?<br/>- the wait staff, though lovely, squeezed me in this tiny little table where any movement bumped the lady next to me who was practically sitting on my table too. There were plenty of other places they could have put me but I guess because I'm on my own I'm not worth as much as a table of two? Anyway, was pretty annoying. <br/>- my poached eggs tasted like they were boiled entirely in vinegar. <br/>- everything tasted rubbery with exception to the eggs. Even the bread. And the bacon. (?) <br/>- my first order choice was sold out, but they didn't mention it as I was seating. It's a little thing that goes a long way to tell customers not to bother considering 'x' choice because it's not available. I really wanted those corn fritters :(<br/><br/>Anyway, the juice was awesome. I am choosing to remember that. <br/>

Perfect brekky for hangover!! We rolled up here after a big night and the service was great!! The Big Brekky- bacon, eggs, mushies, chorizo, u name it it was on there- couldn't eat it all but had a killer chocolate milkshake to boot!! There are so many places on Degraves St and I'm glad we tried this! 😀👌

Sorry to say this I definitely will not come back. My sister and I came here tonight (Sunday) we were ok with the service but the food was poorly cooked. <br/>I had the chicken and mushroom risotto. The flavour was ok but the chicken pieces were cold and part of the rice was cold too. <br/>My sister had the barramundi filet with mashed potatoes; the scales were still on the fish and the filet was way over cooked. The potatoes were cold. <br/>With so many restaurants nearby they really need to lift up their games.<br/>

Thanks to Xpressomundo I had a great birthday dinner :) Fantastic real meat pizza. Awesome chicken Caesar salad. Wonderful Risoto and Great coffee :) definitely recommend it and will return!

Quick service. We ordered minestrone followed by spaghetti and meatballs... Minestrone was tasty and delivered hot. This was very welcome on a cool evening at this outdoor restaurant.<br/>The key ingredient, the meatballs, were absent from the spaghetti sauce; not one could be found! When we pointed this out to the waitress, she went to tell the chef. No apology was offered. <br/>After standing, waiting for a while, a short time later, she returned to ask how many meatballs were in the dish, she was told the same answer, NONE.  <br/>No apology, no discount... Not returning. Shame really......

We were just going for any old cafe in Degraves Street. We sat at Xpressomondo because they had seats available, and didn’t realise that it had such low reviews! 28% on Urbanspoon?!? The food was completely fine. I don’t know what people are complaining about. The staff were fine, the food was fine and the coffee was fine. Perhaps other people came in with extremely high expectations of “Degraves Street” and were left disappointed, but I found it to be a decent cafe breakfast...

Can't be worse. Major disappointment. The food is absolutely disgusting. Pasta swimming in half boiled tinned tomatoes, roughly chopped uncooked onion strewn through it, meatballs made of hamburger mince, not a hint of garlic or herbs anywhere. The final insult was the price, $19.50 for food I would not give to my dog. Oh and coffee was overcooked too. Utterly gutted because I was really looking forward to my lunch on Degraves st. Prime position on the strip wasted in the hands of cafe-operators with absolutely no interest in food.

No Idea. Soooo embarrassed. After telling my NZ Visitors what great cafes Melbourne had, we stopped here and ordered a long black coffee, 2 hot chocolates and 3 iced chocolates. The Coffee was very average ( no crema), the hot chocolates; bland, watery and only luke warm. The iced chocolates also luke warm. The only difference between the "hot" chocolate and "iced" Chocolate was ice cream. When we said that an iced coffee should be cold - we were met with blank looks - even after my daughter told them how to make it! Not worthy of a Melbourne cafe.

Bad experience. I never write reviews but this place compelled me to write it. Let's start with the service the waitress was good and attentive. The coffee was ok. The food was bad. Me being a chef who loves to go to new places and eat had high hopes but was disappointed. I had the special the chicken curry, by far the worst I ever had. I am pretty sure it was reheated in a micro wave or a pan. The risotto was really bland no actual flavour. Hope this place does good. Has a great location and friendly staff

Ministrone soup $13.50. On a previous visit I commented that the minestrone soup traditionally has beans & there none. Tonight the waiter checked & came back and said it had beans, so happy soup was nice....when I paid for 2 serves we were charged an extra $5 for the addition of beans. Also no soup spoons. Won't be going back.

Save your money. Average food, poor service and an arrogant and rude manager.<br/>Don't bother

Truly terrible. Can;t remember the last time I had such bad breakfast. Bad coffee, bad eggs, just all bad.<br/>You guys give Melbourne a bad name. Shame on you.

THEY ARE JUST SO RUDE!

NO.. I didn't like the look of it but we ate there at my partner's insistence. My partner and I ordered the lamb shank on smashed potato and chicken pesto pasta specials. <br/><br/>The chicken was dry and flavourless. The lamb shank came with whole potatoes and smashed potatoes (who does that?!). In terms of flavour and texture the dishes were edible but only that, and not worth the prices we paid.<br/><br/>The waitresses were lovely and welcoming but that was the only good aspect. There are better places mere steps away. Give them your business instead.

Fine service truly bland food. Food devoid of any link to italian cuisine. The so called Bologna lasagne was literally canned tomoatoes on stale pasta with mince plonked in the middle as an after thought.<br/>Avoid.

Really unimpressed. Absolute rubbish. One of the worst meals I have ever had. THIS PLACE IS NOT WORTHY OF MELBOURNE
Latte2go
Great brunch spot!. I'm not sure what everyone else's problem is on here, but we love this spot. We've never had dinner there, so maybe that's what everyone is complaining about, but their breakfast is great! We've had their large breakfast meals, as well as their poached eggs on toast and it's delicious. Their coffee is also fantastic (and yes, I've had coffee at many other cafes throughout Melbourne). I'd give their brekkie a go and see what you think! The space is a bit small, but it is Degraves after all.

Had the seafood pasta! It was really good! The staff are very friendly!

Gone downhill. Have previously had good meals here, but this time the food wasn't great and the wait staff really struggled with English and local restaurant customs. A shame!
Peirri_04
Enter at own risk. This is by far the WORST place I have ever eaten at. Never in my life have a refused to pay for a meal but I did here. The avocado is from a tube and the chicken is processed from the freezer section of Coles but you're still expected to pay top dollar for it. Everybody else's meals were just as bad. This place only runs on the poor unsuspecting victims who find a seat there on busy degraves, no way in hell would it ever see a repeat customer in its life!! DO NOT GO HERE!!!!!!! BAD BAD BAD
Eddo
Lemonade Pasta sauce... and a lemon wedge quarter for garnish.. Really as bad as what the previous 'victims' said. soggy pasta, really stale seafood- so to cover it up lets throw a half a lemon in the pasta to cover it up. Salad... i mean the wilted compost leaves were shocking...

Slow service, burnt coffee, would not recommend.

WARNING!!! Well, first of .... WARNING!!! <br/>Well, first of all, I'm angry. What an AWFUL experience. No words can adequately describe the EMBARRASSMENT I'm feeling on behalf of all Melbournians to have xpressomondo located on Degraves of all Inner City streets. Tourists DO NOT GO HERE. Worst breakfast ever. It's deception. Its exploitation of the thousands of helplessly ignorant tourists drawn to this iconic street every day! The scrambled eggs were dry and tasteless. The mushrooms saturated with a dirty grease like substance strangely familiar to that found on frying pans suffering severe neglect of hygiene. The taste of this breakfast still lingers in my mouth even after 3 powerful fresh breath Eclipse mints- spearmint flavour and trust me, it's NOT a good taste. As Im re-living my encounter, my stomach burns with gastric juices fighting hard to cut through the grime. Thank goodness for the opportunity provided through Urban Spoon and the like to warn others of such a disgrace. Shame!!! Shame on you Degraves.

Very overpriced, poor customer service, low value.<br/>This place isn't worth the money for the food. Got a eggs Atlantic, and they provided little hollandaise sauce, asked for a bit extra and got charged extra $3 for it. DO NOT EAT here!

Very Average. On a recent visit to Melbourne we had passed through Degraves Laneway a few times and on a Sunday evening decided to stop for something to eat as it was one of the few remaining places open. Should have checked reviews first. Our meals were very average at best. Not offered any water. Wait staff whilst pleasant enough, were certainly not skilled. Don't really understand why this place always seemed busy and well patronised. Probably tourists like us that got sucked in.

Worst breakfast ever!!. - No orange juice available, asked if i could by a bottle next door and i was told orange juice was available but i was brought a bottle of orange juice with ginger so i went without.<br/>- missing an egg from my dish, once I received my 2nd egg both poached eggs were hard boiled,<br/>- spinach was not even cooked, just leaves on a plate.<br/>- Ordered a second round of coffee, never arrived<br/>- ginger juice was on the bill.<br/>During the meal, i kept thinking why did i chose this restaurant!!
Dwclim
More bug please. The flavours of the saffron risotto with prawns and moreton bay bug went down a treat. There was a good ratio of prawns to risotto, although it could have done with more than half a bug which was a little disappointing.

Rip Off!. Don't go to Xpressomondo, 33 Degraves Street, Melbourne unless you like...<br/><br/>1) Average Chicken and Mushroom Risotto, with chunks of Lemon you have to remove to eat the rest.<br/><br/>2) Ice water cubes in your Iced Chocolate drink.<br/><br/>It started off nice with a nice rich Choc flavouring, but no long into it, I was hitting these chunk of ice water, most unpleasant indeed. Cheap and nasty :(<br/><br/>I hear this might be a trend overseas, but I hope to end it here now in Australia.<br/><br/>3 Being charged for the drink you first ordered, and they didn't have, so you order something else, only to find later you have been charged for both!<br/><br/>But silly me, I didn't like any of those things, hope you really don't either.

AVOID THIS ONE - NOTHING SPECIAL ABOUT THE SPECIAL. The most disappointing meal we had of all our Melbourne holiday!!<br/>The Special - Pasta Pesto Carbonara was far from special. It was Bland; Sauce had been watered down & not creamy (like soup in a bowl); past overcooked & needed salt in the water, chicken had grisly bits. Only ate it because we were tired and hungry from a long day shopping in Melbourne and all the other kitchens shut at 9pm. Still no excuse to serve up such rubbish. <br/>Wish I had read the reviews on Urbanspoon before we ate there that night as we would have given them a miss.<br/>A special should be a special, regardless of what time at night the meal is prepared.<br/>First impressions count. Thumbs down for this one.

Went simply for a cup of tea which they advertise to be Tea Drop tea (They have the presentation tins and everything!!). Once they brought the tea out they turned out to be five cent teabags from the supermarket!!!!<br/><br/>The waiter then said "what is Tea Drop? I don't even know". He also told me that the menu didn't say "Tea Drop Tea" which it does, and I showed him. Then he told me I couldn't leave and not pay. I left anyway - I won't pay for something that isn't what it says it is!!!<br/><br/> Very unprofessional and trying to market cheap crap as something more expensive!!! BEWARE!!!!
